Not your average apple It is well known that not all apples are the same. The green Granny Smith, with its distinctive colour and aroma, is the celebrity of all apples, at least since the Beatles used it as a logo on their albums. What lies under the bright green skin and within the crisp juicy flesh is astounding. The mix of its texture and character make this apple unrivaled.

Low in calories, rich in vitamins Organic apples are healthy. That goes without saying. They are rich in minerals and vitamins, improve the immune system, balance cholesterol levels and reduce blood pressure. They are low in calories, high in fibre content and ideal for a balanced diet. Apples can help reduce body weight – particularly Granny Smiths.

THE FRUIT

A Granny Smith a day ‌ A study by Washington State University examined various varieties of apples. In comparison to Braeburn, Fuji, Gala, Golden Delicious, McIntosh and Red Delivious, the Granny Smith variety had a particularly high level of indigestible properties. This promotes the growth of “friendlyâ€? bacteria in the gut. In addition they contain fibre, polyphenols and low levels of carbohydrates. Notwithstanding gastric acid and digestive enzymes, these substances remain intact until the reach the large intestine. There they ferment thanks to the bacteria in the intestine, which encourages the growth of probiotics. It has been shown that they can help prevent obesity-related illnesses, for example chronic inflammation, which in turn can lead to diabetes. Nutrition is crucial to maintain the right balance of bacteria in the intestine. According to scientists, these bacteria stabilise metabolic processes, which prevent inflammation and invokes the feeling of satiety.

THE FRUIT

The All-rounder in the Kitchen The well-loved juicy apple is highly suited as a sourish counter balance for deserts as well as being suitable for cooking, roasting and backing. The slightly tart flavored variety is highly popular in smoothies and sorbets. Try it finely cut in a salad. And when a recipe calles for Granny Smith apples – and not just any apples – there is a reason to it.

THE FRUIT

An organic apple, bound to make your mouth water As juicy and refreshing as this variety of apple is, for some the sourness can be too dominant. Not so with organic Grannies from Frulana. Grown under the Italian sun and harvested only when ready to eat, our apples have the right balance of sweet and sour. Their Brix value confirms this: continually one to two degrees over the standard.

Frulana Organic Farm Granny Smiths as far as the eye can see. The Frulana organic farm nestles in Udine in the north east of Italy. Only 20 km from the sea and 20 km from the mountains, here 60,000 Granny Smith trees are grown (as well as 8,000 Idared trees used for pollination) on warm stony soil, the ideal microclimate for tree growth. Harvesting only takes place when the apples are ready to eat. These first-class apples have a Brix value of 1–2 degrees over the norm.

Sustainable production with respect for nature and the environment On 17.5 hectares of land, the firm’s founder, Leonhard LÜsch, manages the orchards according to the latest technical and organic methods. The on-site solar plant provides power both for the harvesting equipment as well as the remote controlled irrigation system. Sustainable management according to strict organic principles and the use of renewable energy makes Frulana Azienda Agricola one of the most visited farms.

The investment is worthwhile: health benefit thanks to organic quality Leonhard Lรถsch, who has been active in the fruit and vegetable sector for over 30 years, started in 2010 with sowing organic herbs to improve the soil conditions. Meanwhile the entire site is protected using fine-meshed nets, from the blossom through to harvesting. Ladybirds and other insects actively contribute on the Frulana organic farm to the production of crisp and healthy fruit, which are not genetically modified and which are free of pesticides.
