GROWING PAINS When you’re 15 you watch your dad die His best friend cries until his face turns purple

GROWING PAINS You come out to your mom at 19 She cries for three days and never brings it up again

GROWING PAINS At 24 your girlfriend grabs your wrists Screams in your face, “you’ve never been raped”, And doesn’t let you leave the room

GROWING PAINS There’s days you need to tackle Her, so she doesn’t run In front of trains

GROWING PAINS At 25, you leave her behind With a snap-crack, like a limb

GROWING PAINS A year later you learn you were abused But make excuses for it all the same

growing like a weed.

“you need to stop,”

they cry below.

“you’re taking up

too much space.”

but it’s too late.

you have grown up

higher and higher

until you can no

longer see those you

once knew so well.

you want to slow

down but you can’t.

with your head in the clouds, you forget

about the world at your aching feet,

and it is here that you finally stop growing.
