DISNEY BETS ON AI
DISNEY SCOMMETTE SULL’AI
Disney has stopped fighting artificial intelligence and has transformed it from a threat into a business. News has emerged in recent hours that The Walt Disney Company and OpenAI have signed a 3-year licensing agreement under which, starting in 2026, Sora – OpenAI’s AI video generation tool – will be able to generate short, user-prompted social videos that can be viewed and shared by fans, drawing from a set of over 200 characters from Disney, Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars, including costumes, props, vehicles and iconic environments. The characters will include, for example, Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Lilo and Stitch, Ariel, Belle and the Beast, and the protagonists of “Encanto,” “Frozen,” and “Monsters Inc.” for Disney and Pixar, while for Marvel there will be superheroes like Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor, concluding with “Star Wars” characters such as Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Leia, Yoda, and Han Solo. ChatGPT will also be able to draw from the same intellectual properties to create images (any talent likenesses or voices are excluded from the agreement), and a selection of fan-inspired Sora short form videos will be available to stream on Disney+. The agreement also stipulates that Disney will make a $1 billion equity investment in OpenAI - receiving warrants to purchase additional equity - and that it will become a major customer, using OpenAI’s APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) to build new products, tools and experiences, including for Disney+, and deploying ChatGPT for its employees. Why is the agreement so significant? In short, it is the first true licensing model for AI, with OpenAI

obtaining the world’s most valuable IP, Disney earning income, forming an alliance, and controlling the ecosystem, and users becoming co-creators of the brand. We will now see if and how the other giants will move. Meanwhile, in a note, Disney and OpenAI declare themselves committed to using AI responsibly, protecting user safety and the rights of creators. “Technological innovation has continually shaped the evolution of entertainment, bringing with it new ways to create and share great stories with the world,” said Robert A. Iger, CEO, The Walt Disney Company. “The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence marks an important moment for our industry, and through this collaboration with OpenAI we will thoughtfully and responsibly extend the reach of our storytelling through generative AI, while respecting and protecting creators and their works. Bringing together Disney’s iconic stories and characters with OpenAI’s groundbreaking technology puts imagination and creativity directly into the hands of Disney fans in ways we’ve never seen before, giving them richer and more personal ways to connect with the Disney characters and stories they love.” Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, echoed him with these words: “Disney is the global gold standard for storytelling, and we’re excited to partner to allow Sora and ChatGPT Images to expand the way people create and experience great content. This agreement shows how AI companies and creative leaders can work together responsibly to promote innovation that benefits society, respect the importance of creativity, and help works reach vast new audiences.”

More and more often, ice battery technology is being added to buildings for its ability to provide cool air with no planet-warning emission and saving energy and money. The iconic Rockfeller Center, in the heart of New York City, has been using ice batteries since the early 2000s.

et’s set the scene: Christmas music in the air, fairy lights twinkling in the background, a towering festive tree decked in red and green decorations, a sprinkle of snow. The ice rink at Rockefeller Center is the quintessential Christmas venue, the perfect backdrop for a romantic date, or a family reunion, or a friend’s group soiree. First installed in 1936 as a temporary attraction, it immediately became so famous that it was made permanent in 1939, and every year it attracts thousands of visitors that glide (often with more enthusiasm than grace) across this patch of ice nestled among the skyscrapers of Manhattan. All around, the Rockefeller Center unfolds like a vertical plaza, a carefully designed mix of Art Deco skyscrapers, terraces, and open spaces, with shops, restaurants and cafés that stay open year-round. An everyday sight for New Yorkers and a stage for the city’s most photographed moments, the Rockefeller Center complex covers six blocks and counts almost 750,000sqm of rentable space, as well as being home to NCS studios and Radio City Music Hall.
The ice rink may be the most widely known, but it is far from the most important use of ice for the Rockefeller Center: the complex uses ice batteries to lower energy consumption and be more environment-friendly, especially in summer. The solution, based on ice-making chillers and ice storage tanks, is not new; Rockefeller Center operator Tishman Speyer decided for the installation it in the early 00s. But in recent years the technology behind thermal energy storage has evolved, and by now it powers over 4000 buildings in the US alone, cutting energy use for cooling systems by 40%. But how does an ice battery system work? And how does it help the environment? “Thermal energy storage is like a battery for a building’s air-conditioning system,” explains Calmac, the manufacturer of the IceBank thermal energy storage tanks used in the Rockefeller Center. Instead of using energy to cool down the building in real-time, the system makes ice in off-peak hours, when electricity demand is low and power is often cheaper; then, during the hot daytime hours when the building needs cooling, the ice melts, and its cold runoff carries that “stored cold” through the air-conditioning system. Because the main pieces — chillers, pipes and insulated tanks — are similar to conventional cooling equipment, ice systems can be added to many existing buildings without changing how people experience indoor temperature. The difference is in operating costs, and environmental effects. By making ice in off-peak hours, you not only take advantage of lower energy
11
Ice batteries are thermal storage systems that take advantage of cheaper energy rates during off-peak hours, which is typically at night. During that time, chilled water is collected and stored in tanks (C). Then, during peak rate times, the cooler water is integrated into the building’s cooling system.

C The 30-story Eleven Madison skyscraper in New York City also uses an ice battery for cooling, as does the A Bank of America Tower. A New York, anche il C grattacielo di 30 piani Eleven Madison e la ABank of America Tower usano batterie a ghiaccio per il loro raffreddamento.

costs. “Off-peak electricity is more efficient, and it’s important to note, it’s also cleaner,” confirms Calmac. For several reasons. One, when the grid works hard to meet high demand, it needs to use energy from “peaker” power plants that are generally twice as dirty as off-peak, baseload plants. Two, in the heat of the day, more electricity is lost to dissipation along the line (losses of 5-7% are normal, but the figure can go as high as 14% on hot days), so it’s more efficient to store energy on-site. Three, some renewable sources like wind power tend to produce more energy at night, so it’s more cost-effective to distribute it right away and store it on-site, instead of relying on central storage systems. There are also more reasons, but we won’t delve into them here, as they are more technical. If you want an idea of what can be achieved with ice battery technology, look at 11 Madison Avenue, an Art Deco building in Manhattan where energy services company Trane installed a thermal energy storage system with Calmac ice batteries in more recent years. According to Trane, the installation allowed a 635,000kg decrease in annual carbon dioxide emissions (equivalent to removing 130 cars from the road or planting 76ha of trees), a 1,035-kilowatt reduction in electricity demand during peak summer periods, a 10% reduction in tenant energy costs and more than $730,000 in annual savings in energy and operating costs for the building. Not bad, uh? n
Niente male, no? n
Nowadays adventure travel means also immersive, meaningful travel, that is experiences connecting you with nature, culture and place and leaving you enriched with unique memories. hat does adventure mean to you? Is it bungee jumping, white-water rafting, scaling mountains? If so, you may be a bit behind the times. Over the past decade, people looking for “adventure travel” have shifted from technical, adrenaline-fueled activities to something wider: biking, hiking, and even less intense activities like cultural explorations. “Today’s adventurers are curious, intentional, and motivated by more than physical challenge. They seek immersive experiences that foster meaningful connections with nature, culture, and place,” explains the Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA) on their Adventure Travel News website. This snapshot is the result of ATTA’s most recent report, the 2025 Annual Adventure Travel Trends & Insights Report. Published in summer 2025, the report is based on a survey conducted from mid-February through mid-April 2025, asking tour operator respondents about their 2024 business operations and sales, 2025 booking

Pubblicato quest'estate,

expectations, travel trends, and consumer motivations. As they have been curating and growing their database for over 18 years, ATTA is uniquely placed to understand the situation, challenges, and outlooks of this sector. Let’s have a look at what they found. A Market Over One Trillion Dollars The main outcome is a striking figure: the global outbound adventure travel market reached $1.16 trillion USD in 2024. A second figure may be just as notable: no less than 67% of all international travelers are open to the idea of opting for a trip that incorporates adventurous elements. This is a clear sign that adventure travel is no longer a niche subsector, but has rather reached mainstream importance.

Cultural immersion and opportunities to engage authentically with local traditions are leading drivers for travelers open to adventure.
Meanwhile, the core adventure-first traveler base has risen from 30% to 40% globally. Stabilization Time The 2025 edition data show that the market has finally reached stabilization after the COVID-related upheavals. Respondents served an average of 4141 travelers in 2024, down from 6553 in 2023; but despite the 37% drop, demand levels remain consistent with those of 2019, and trip fill rates are in line with 2022 and 2023, suggesting the industry has normalized after years of volatility. Redefining Adventure, Redefining Travel Years ago travelers looked for leisurely getaways, but things have shifted. Today’s travelers want to be active participants, they look for experiences that are unique and memorable, like gastronomy, local traditions, and the like. Similarly, the boundaries of what is defined as adventure have become blurred. According to the survey, top ranking activities are culinary travel, safaris and wildlife viewing, hiking/trekking, e-bike cycling, wildlife/nature photography, and cultural activities. Travelers’ leading motivations included the desire for new experiences, to go off the beaten path, and to travel like a local, but also the so-called “Last Chance Travel”, the urge to see places and things before they disappear due to climate change. Sustainability And Community On the supplier side, small operators have flourished, because they are the most close to local culture and the best placed to offer authentic experiential travel.

Global platforms have amplified the reach of these locally-focused, community-led initiatives, making it easier than ever for travelers to create meaningful journeys tailored to their interests. Besides local community, a major focus highlighted by the survey is sustainability, with 49% of respondents either hold or are working toward a sustainability certification, and similar percentages taking tangible action such as educating travelers about climate-conscious travel, reducing fossil fuel use, conserving water, or more generally shifting towards more sustainable operations.

Final Words “The adventure travel industry is entering a new chapter. Not one defined by growth for growth's sake alone, but by thoughtful, valuesdriven evolution,” said Shannon Stowell, CEO of the Adventure Travel Trade Association. “What we do now matters more than ever. By staying committed to sustainability in travel, supporting local communities, and working together across borders and sectors, we can shape a future that’s not only resilient, but deeply meaningful—for travelers, for the planet, and for the people who call these places home. n
A Food is a central part of a destination’s culture and history.

The report, based on data from the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) and Oxford Economics, reveals that the travel industry is set to grow at a faster pace than the global economy over the next 10 years: an average annual growth rate of 3.5% for travel through 2035, compared to 2.5% for the broader global economy. By that year, the sector is expected to generate over $16 trillion and account for nearly 12% of global GDP. New patterns and new destinations In addition to recording and forecasting data, the report also seeks to explain the travel & tourism growth by identifying traveler behaviors, emerging trends, and other key factors fueling this increase. It notes that higher living costs in many markets, travel remains a priority for consumers, maintaining a high share of discretionary spending. Moreover, staying longer in a destination has become increasingly popular, reversing the prior trend of taking more but shorter trips. “This shift is particularly notable in the Middle East where trip lengths have increased by around two thirds compared to 2019,” says the report.

Gigtripping is growing As today’s consumers buy experiences (even better if they are sharable and memorable) rather than material goods, big events like concerts are ever more popular and a driving force in travel decisions. Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour in 2024 gathered over 10 million people in 2024, and Oasis’ Live ’25 Tour, which concluded last month, attracted nearly 2 million fans, according to preliminary estimates. Big sports and music events will be on the rise also in the coming years, shaping the travel market. The report notes: “Destinations are actively encouraging major touring artists to host events in their cities following the successes of a series of high-profile concerts in the last 2 years.”

SHORTAGE OF TOURISM WORKERS COULD HIT 43 MILLION BY 2035 // "We’re hiring": job vacancy signs and
ads have unfortunately become the norm for restaurants, hotels, campgrounds, and other tourist facilities, and not just during peak season. Staff shortage is a serious, even structural, problem that is affecting the global travel and tourism industry. The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has recently released a report on this subjet titled “Future of The Travel & Tourism Workforce,” which reveals that while the sector is on course to support 91 million new jobs by 2035 (one in 3 new jobs created globally) it could face a shortage of more than 43 million workers by that time, leaving labour availability 16% below required levels. The hospitality industry alone could lack 8.6 million workers, with low-skilled positions – vital roles that cannot be easily automated – remaining the hardest to fill. The report also identifies significant labour shortage in major economies, especially China, India and the European Union. Drilling down, China is projected to have a shortfall of 16.9 million workers, India 11 million and the European Union 6.4 million.

More choices bring more reasons to travel Increasing capacity across air and cruise travel and accommodation is also helping to fuel growth. Airline expansion has continued at pace in recent years, with over 15,000 aircraft on the orderbooks with Boeing and Airbus. The cruise industry has also shown rapid growth since the end of the pandemic, with global cruise passengers set to surpass 38 million this year. There are 15 new vessels expected to launch by the end of 2025, and new brands entering the market, including Aroya cruises for the Arabian market. Meanwhile in the hospitality sector, 2025 is set to be another strong year of expansion too. Over 500,000 new hotel rooms across the globe are expected to open by the end of this year, with a further one million rooms under construction.

THE WORLD'S LARGEST CAPSULE HOTEL IS IN LONDON Born in Japan in the 1970s, capsule hotels developed very quickly and are today part of contemporary culture not only in Japan or Asia, but worldwide. They provide cheap and convenient accommodation for frequent travelers or those seeking an experiential stay. It's not uncommon to find these distinctive hotels, characterized by modular high-tech micro-rooms with a bed, TV, electrical outlets, Internet access and little else, in many countries, especially (but not only) inside or near airports and train stations. For example, there are capsule hotels in Munich, Amsterdam, Mumbai, Kuala Lumpur, Moscow, Madrid, Zurich, Paris and Milan. London also has them, and for the past few weeks can boast, right in the city center, the world's largest capsule hotel. It's called Zedwell Capsule Hotel Piccadilly Circus and it offers nearly 1,000 individual capsules with prices starting at just £30. Guests can retreat into soundproofed, deliberately windowless capsules softly illuminated with ambient lighting, and featuring luxury mattresses and sheets, smart climate control and purified airflow. Showers and toilets are shared, and check-in is done via tablets positioned at the entrance.

The SBF-VISA Group’ s exhibition space was one of the largest, and also one of most crowded given the wide variety of attractions on display, designed for different types of locations. For example, there were the new mini-Tagada "Disco Frenzy," and a "Drop 'N Twist" tower ride featuring a circular gondola that, in addition to the free-fall movement, also rotates clockwise and counterclockwise and bounces several times before coming to rest. Other crowd-pullers include a "Spinning Coaster" from the VISACoasters division (one of the company's best-selling models), and "Zero Gravity," a modern take on the classic "Rotor" ride that many parks and funfairs had between the 1950s and 1990s.
This colorful horse carousel by SBF-VISA Group was brought to Orlando from New York City, specifically the gardens of Public Hotel. The attraction has been painted by the Chicago-born graffiti artist POSE for hotelier Ian Schrager. POSE took inspiration from NYC’s 1980s graffiti heyday and the storybook universe.
In the expo’s outdoor area, many visitors enjoyed another SBF-VISA ride: the “Pirate Ship,” a timeless classic that has recently been updated in its design with excellent feedback.

GREAT STORIES AND GREAT PRODUCTS As with every previous edition, this year's IAAPA Expo served as a stage for the presentation of interesting new developments: attraction launches, news of new partnerships, and announcements of new openings. Not to mention the Brass Ring Awards given to the “Best New Products” seen at the trade show. Here are the stories and products that impressed us the most.
wiegand.waterrides’ Slide Coaster won the IAAPA Brass Ring Award in the "Best New Product-Water Park Ride/Attraction – Product cost of more than US$2 million.” This attraction combines a water ride and a rollercoaster into a completely new experience. The patented LSM propulsion system propels the boats to speeds of up to 50 km/h, with acceleration reaching 0.8 g, experiencing stunning curves and tunnel sections filled with vibrant colors and daylight effects. A lazy river then gently guides the boats and their passengers back to the starting point. The first “Slide Coaster” debuted on the Norwegian Aqua cruise ship in Spring 2025. Next year, a new “Slide Coaster” will launch at sea on the new Norwegian Luna vessel.
S&S Worldwide (S&S) unveiled the vehicle for its newest family coaster, the “RailRyder”. Inspired by Arrow Dynamics’ single rail “Steeplechase Coaster,” it reimagines the classic concept for today’s amusement market. “Our conversations with parks have shown that the roller coaster market is shifting,” said Trever Dyer, Executive Director of Sales and Marketing at S&S Worldwide. “More parks are looking for a ride the whole family will enjoy, including grandparents, teenagers, and the youngest thrill seekers. RailRyder was designed to fit that need.” S&S’s R&D team reimagined the ride design with a sleek, ribbon-style single rail track that delivers both visual appeal and an unforgettable ride experience. Seats placed in-line, allowing parents the perfect position to interact with a first-time rider. The open-air vehicle and seatbelt restraint allow riders to feel more freedom, giving older kids the thrill they crave in a roller coaster. The coaster’s max speed is 58kmph and the minimum height requirement is 1m.

The Gravity Group has a passion for wooden roller coasters and their engineered precut 100% wood track is really innovative. Most wooden roller coaster track is hand-cut onsite, sometimes at great heights and in difficult positions. This traditional construction method can introduce small imperfections to the shape and requires highly skilled carpenters to implement the ride design information into the final product. The alternative track system created by The Gravity Group is precut at company’s facility by precision CNC equipment to the exact shape determined by the ride design, resulting in prefabricated pieces that are easier and more economical to install with predictable, excellent results. Moreover, the engineered precut track is by design up to 30 times stronger than the traditional wooden roller coaster track, ensuring that the track will deliver smooth rides and indefinitely be maintenance friendly. The first installation of this innovative track dates back to 2021 on Kings Island’s “Racer”.

Combining ETF’s well-established trackless systems and Intamin’s latest roller coaster technologies, the attraction features trackless vehicles that can be launched at speeds of up to 36kmph, which is 7 times faster than a regular trackless ride system. Multi Dimension elements from Intamin’s “Multi Dimension Coaster” can also be added, surprising riders for example with a free fall drop, or even a bungee sequence. Moreover, vehicles can move in any direction, as well as spin and tilt. Optional interactive elements can be added like shooters and selection buttons to trigger effects onto vehicles or into the scenery.

The IAAPA Brass Ring Award for the “Best New Product” in the “Family Ride/Attraction” category went to “Sundancer Galaxy” by SunKid GmbH. The Austrian company has been manufacturing a single-car version of this ride for many years, but recently, following a request from Lotte World Adventures theme park in Busan, Korea, it has released a new larger version featuring 4 cars, again with 4 seats each. Other enhancements to the original ride include a redesign of the ride center and the connecting elements between the drive and the cars. The guide rail is now also completely trip-proof, as it is embedded in the floor and there is a large safety bar for all riders. “Sundancer Galaxy” is similar to a teacup ride, except as you spin it tilts.

The importance of information was discussed in the era of direct marketing, which was mainly based on mail-order purchases, then database marketing took hold when the personal computer became widespread. In the early 2000s, IBM totally changed its focus from hardware to software specifically to help the public and private sectors manage data. More recently, leaders like Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella have reiterated that today, data is like electricity. Still others have called data the new black gold. The technological advancements driven by this alliance aim to redefine the guest experience across multiple touchpoints. Intelligent recommendation systems, reduction of dead time, support from virtual assistants, and collection of post-visit information for future recommendations are some of the benefits the new alliance brings. Subsequently, Six Flags also announced a specific partnership with Amazon and Coca-Cola to implement the "Just Walk Out" technology used by Amazon for its deliveries but especially in its points of sale, like its Whole Foods grocery stores. This technology serves to create "frictionless payment" phases and aims to improve the guest experience in purchasing and dining by practically eliminating payment at the cash registers. Subsequently, Disney announced a licensing agreement with OpenAI to integrate its characters and intellectual property into Sora, OpenAI's generative video platform. Finally, Universal announced its focus on Digital Twin technology to optimize park attractions development and operations. This virtual counterpart of the physical attractions creates continuous feedback that helps monitor performance, predict maintenance, and even run self-healing sequences for ride automation, reducing downtime. Digital twins also help design and test attractions, optimizing show control, lighting, and audio for smoother, more personalized guest experiences before physical construction. A partnership with Hitachi also helps Universal leverage data for energy efficiency, waste reduction, and resource conservation across its global operations. The Needs of The Digital Consumer The push, however, as was confirmed during some IAAPA Expo sessions, comes not only from the high-tech sector but also from the profile of new consumers, particularly Generation Alpha. This segment has grown up in a digital environment, is tech-savvy, visually sophisticated, and is also always connected and able to discover experiences

before their parents. Those who belong to this group expect social and immersive experiences, both online and offline, that reflect their digital experience, meaning with access to immediate and personalized content and information. These trends are not limited to the entertainment sector. In the same week the IAAPA Expo Orlando was held, in New York, the Conference Board, one of the barometers of the American economy, held the AI Leadership Summit, an event aimed at managers in every industry. Some of the case studies presented are useful for those who want to compare processes in other sectors. Regarding customer service, for example, the shipping and logistics giant UPS spoke about the dramatic impact of AI on efficiency and customer service. The international courier uses generative AI to automate responses to customer messages, significantly reduce human operator handling time, and automate the most frequent requests, such as package tracking. Among the advantages is the ability to concentrate human agents on more complex and critical issues. Sheila Jordan, Senior Vice President and Chief Digital Technology Officer at Honeywell, was more specific and framed the generative AI strategy at Honeywell in five key areas usable in any company. These include leveraging Microsoft 365 Copilot for internal content aggregation, implementing GitHub for coding among their software developers, utilizing Large Language Models (LLM) for drafting technical

documentation, and finally, incorporating AI directly into Honeywell's products and services. Ultimately, Honeywell views generative AI as a dual engine: it increases internal productivity by automating tedious tasks and fuels external growth by accelerating product implementation and improving the customer experience on e-commerce channels. Other goals that emerged during the meeting and that leaders must set for themselves concern how to measure ROI and unlock business value, how to build the necessary data infrastructure and governance to support growth, and manage the diverse global regulations on AI implementation.
Change Management Starts with The Human Factor Those who participated in the workshops during the IAAPA Expo Orlando or attended the Conference Board conference (like the author) likely returned to their company convinced of the need to accelerate the introduction of new AI tools, but that is not enough. Take the example of AT&T: until the 1980s/90s, the American company dominated the telecommunications sector, with a recognizable brand and the trust of everyone. Today the brand

has lost its luster, and especially young consumers are more familiar with brands like Verizon or T-Mobile/Sprint, which have now become the major market operators in the USA. AT&T CEO John Stankey himself stated that his mistake was acting slowly in transforming the corporate culture, placing it too low on his priority list instead of as the main objective. Effective change management requires leaders to involve people, clearly explain the value (or "what's in it for them"), and even actively engage skeptics to identify and address concerns early. Summarizing the cases cited, technology must be communicated not as an alien tool that eliminates jobs, but as a mechanism to eliminate repetitive and tedious activities in favor of higher-level decision-making processes. Stankey also outlined how AT&T is now pushing employees to adopt AI. Specifically, the company offers tutorials and other educational tools for employees to improve their AI skills and also pays attention to who uses these tools. And if that were still not enough to convince employees, the CEO openly said that if the requirements dictated by this dynamic do not align with personal aspirations, then individuals have every right to find a career opportunity elsewhere. Another clear element that emerged at both events is that large companies are already moving beyond the experimental phases, aiming for large-scale implementation. This offers useful case studies for those managing smaller-scale attractions on how to guide the adoption of AI, particularly how to measure concrete results (ROI), generate value for the company, and above all, how to rethink personnel strategy in an AI-driven economy. In terms of amusement, this means that you are not on a roller coaster with ups and downs, but you are at the center of an inevitable transition that sees AI as a technological revolution, comparable to the impact of the Internet and cell phones and perhaps, as the CEO of Microsoft asserted, to electricity. n

A NEW PLAYGROUND CONCEPT BY GERMAN COMPANY KRISTALLTURM

id you know that Germany, and namely Bavaria, has its own “Hollywood”? Like the original one in Los Angeles, the Bavaria Filmstadt in Munich is a set of studios active in cinema and TV, and partly open to the public. Visitors can see sets and props like Falcor, the dragon from “The Neverending Story,” but they can also find attractions in a stricter sense, made to entertain adults and children alike. The newest such attraction is a gigantic wooden letter B (for Bavaria) that hides a full multilevel playground for children and teens. The new playground is a “PlayLetter”, the very first of its kind by German high ropes course company KristallTurm. Standing at around 8m tall and 5m wide right at the entrance of the Bavaria Filmstadt, the turquoise B is impossible to miss. From the outside it’s a true eye-catcher, and inside it features twisting chambers, hatches, beams, ramps, making it so that it the letter can be explored in various ways and directions. The journey out is either from the lowest level or halfway up, via a stainless steel slide. Four large and several small plexiglass windows ensure plenty of light for bright interiors and offer glimpses of the outside world. “The “PlayLetter” is both a landmark and a play experience in one,” explains the company.

easily be customized in the design phase to suit the colors and corporate identity of each client, transforming it into a distinctive landmark and an iconic symbol for corporate headquarters, shopping centers or even tourist regions. The play space is also innovative, because unlike traditional playgrounds it doesn’t spread out horizontally but instead rises upwards, creating a compact and space-efficient structure that is ideal for locations with limited space. Being an enclosed space, the system also eliminates fall risks usually associated with heights, so no safety clearances are required. The company explains that they “have actually had the idea for the “PlayLetter” for some time. In the past, we have already received international inquiries from Dubai, China and Malaysia. However, in order to guarantee full quality and eliminate possible teething troubles, KristallTurm initially focused on the regional environment,” with the first “PlayLetter” installed in Munich in spring 2025. Since then, a lot has happened: while the Munich “PlayLetter” was made entirely of wood, now the structural core of the product is a robust steel frame, with wood cladding to maintain the natural look. In addition, a range of light- and air-permeable facade options is now available. The company has also developed a modular system that allows all 26 letters of the alphabet to be created using only a few basic elements, and they currently offer the “PlayLetter” in two standard sizes: 6.2m and 8m tall. The smaller version offers particular advantages in terms of logistics, as its components fit perfectly into a 20-foot container. The concept is proving popular: at this year’s IAAPA

materiali permeabili alla luce e all’aria.

new chapter for the TEA report, a steady growth for the market: the recently released TEA Global Experience Index highlights stable and growing markets around the world for theme parks, water parks and museums. The report, which is by now a historical feature of the theme park news landscape, arrived later than usual this year, and with more than a few changes. Produced with new research partners (Entertainment + Culture Advisors and The Park Database replaced the previous longtime partner AECOM), it was also rebranded from the “Theme Index & Museum Index Report” to the “Global Experience Index,” to showcase a wider approach to the markets that are covered in the data. “The TEA Global Experience Index acknowledges that today’s world of carefully crafted, in-person experiences has evolved beyond the traditional definition of themed entertainment,” said Ben Thompson, CEO of Storyland Locations, the company who prepares the presentation of the Index. “The 2024 TEA Global Experience Index
marks a new chapter in the long history of this attendance report,” echoed TEA CEO Melissa Oviedo. “We can now easily grow the report to match the expanding role of themed entertainment in markets around the world.” At the heart of the report is an encouraging message: following the normalization of travel and tourism patterns, the global attractions industry has also largely moved past the disruption of the COVID-19 years. In 2024, total visits across the top 25 theme parks worldwide climbed by 2.4%, reaching nearly 246 million. Distribution, however, has changed: markets have stabilized in mature markets like the United States, Japan and Western Europe, while the most dynamic impetus came from China and broader Asia. All in all, with growth once again underway, 2024 stands as a year of consolidation and renewed momentum, and looking ahead “the global attractions landscape remains active and dynamic and poised for continued growth in 2025 and beyond,” reads the report. But let’s dive in for a closer look.
KNOTT’S BERRY FARM, USA Within the U.S., Florida kept its position as the hub of theme park activity with 76.4 million visitors across 8 parks. California ranked second, with 47.9 million guests for 6 parks. Here: Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Vista, CA, which ranked 10th in the North America amusement park chart with over 4.5 million guests.

Europe EMEA theme parks grew 3.3% in 2024, and while much of the growth was represented by the Middle East, Europe contributed with a steady performance and incremental development, proving itself “a market that continues to innovate within established boundaries.” Puy du Fou (France) and Parque Warner Madrid (Spain) each added roughly 12% to attendance. Energylandia (Poland), a new addition to the Index, recorded an impressive 28% growth, attributed to extending its operating calendar to year-round and implementing themed events, especially in colder months. Efteling (Netherlands) maintained its record-breaking attendance streak, also thanks to its new spooky land Huyverwoud. Other top ranking European parks like Disneyland Park, Walt Disney Studios Park and PortAventura saw a decrease in attendance, which the report attributes to
events like the European Football Championship and the Olympic Games taking place in the 2024 summer months. The UK was also a mixed bag: for instance, among parks operated by Merlin Entertainments, Alton Towers saw 6.4% increase after opening the new coaster "Nemesis Reborn", LEGOLAND Windsor remained flat and Thorpe Park saw an 8% decline (perhaps due to a delayed opening of their new coaster, "Hyperia"). North America America, that still accounts for a very large share of theme park attendance worldwide, tells a different story. North American parks remained relatively flat, even showing a minor decline of 0.3%, which the report attributed to “other forms of entertainment such as immersive experiences, traveling exhibitions and indoor LBE more effectively compet[ing] for attention,” among other things. performance, however, is not as bad as it sounds: when you compare the data with earnings reports it becomes clear that operators are focusing on revenue optimization rather than pure volume growth, a sensible approach for a more mature market. Once again, Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom topped the chart with 17.8 million visitors. Both Puy du Fou in France and Parque Warner Madrid in Spain added roughly 12% to attendance in 2024, totaling 2.8 million and 2.25 million guests, respectively.

The hub of success is clearly in Yas Island: this Abu Dhabi tourist destination reported a record 38 million guests in 2024 (a 10% increase, with international visits up 40%), fueled by a diversified calendar of concerts and events. The island’s three indoor theme parks (Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World and SeaWorld Abu Dhabi) collectively added over 1 million visits against 2023’s attendance. Asia The Asia-Pacific region in general remained relatively stable in 2024, and even marked a 3.2% increase. This is in line with 2023’s 4% increase over pre-pandemic numbers and, according to the report, it “potentially points to a new benchmark for the region as the market shifts from (prepandemic) rapid expansion towards sustainable growth.” I tre parchi a tema indoor dell’isola (Ferrari World, Warner Bros.

Parc Asterix, north of Paris, reconfirmed its position as the second most-visited park in France, surpassing 2.9 million guests this year. And for the near future, it aims to enter the European Top 5. The transformation of Parc Asterix begins in 2026 in the Egypt area with the re-theming of several attractions, including the swing ride “Chaises Volantes” (C). In 2027, the focus will shift to the Greece area, where 2 new family rides will arrive (D).
In 2027, Parc Asterix’s fourth hotel will also open. It will be called L’Odyssée and will have 350 rooms. The park’s accommodation capacity will thus increase to 750 rooms. These are aimed not only at improving the guest experience in general but also at giving the park an even more international appeal, create 20% additional capacity (two-thirds of which will be indoors reducing dependence on weather conditions), and increasing accommodation capacity to allow more guests to stay for multiple days, thus increasing their spending. Next year, the area dedicated to Egypt will be completely transformed with the re-theming of “Oxygénarium,” which becomes “La Descente du Nil,” and “Chaises Volantes” (Swing Ride) transformed into “L’Envol d’Ibis.” Finally, the restaurant “Le Cirque” will become “Le Comptoir d’Epidemaïs”. In 2027, the transformation will focus on the Greece area, with the arrival of two family rides, a play area, and a 450-seat restaurant. Also in 2027, a new hotel, the park's fourth, will open its doors. Named L'Odyssée, it will be a 4-star hotel with an oriental theme inspired by the comic book story “Asterix and the Odyssey.” With the addition of these 300 new rooms, the Parisian park's accommodation capacity will reach 750 rooms.

GERMAN BELANTIS PARK TO BECOME THE FIRST PARC ASTERIX OUTSIDE FRANCE Parc Asterix is owned by Compagnie des Alpes, a French company whose business is divided among amusement parks (it currently has 12, with 8 outside national borders), ski resorts, and hotel facilities in the French Alps. Earlier this month, Compagnie des Alpes announced its financial results for the 2024-2025 fiscal year, which are really impressive: record revenue of 12.8 billion euros, up nearly 13% from the previous year; EBITDA (gross operating margin) increased by nearly 17%, reaching 409 million euros; and net profit of 107 million euros (+15.8%). The group's Amusement Parks division also performed excellently, with EBITDA of 176 million euros, up nearly 24%. In this area, the most significant event of 2025 was the purchase in April of Belantis from Parques Reunidos - a park near Leipzig that is one of leaders in Eastern Germany. According to the French group, Belantis will become the first Parc Asterix outside France. The transition will be gradual: the name change won't happen before 2030/31, but starting next year, a themed area dedicated to Dogmatix (Obelix's dog) will open. In the long term, the German park is expected to attract up to 900,000 visitors per year. The choice of Germany as the first country to bring Parc Asterix to is no coincidence: after France, it's the country where the most Asterix comics are sold in the world.
ride, with information coming directly from its producer, Alterface. The Belgian company, which specializes in this type of attraction, explained that the attraction will be suitable for everyone starting from just 4 years of age, and very fun, capturing the unmistakable humor and spirit of the Asterix universe, while also incorporating playful references to British culture. It will feature 6 interactive scenes where riders use their “magic potion gourds” to compete in a series of carnivalstyle challenges inspired by Gaulish mischief and British eccentricity. The gameplay is progressive. The ride begins with simple interactions, then gradually adds skill and reflex-based challenges, maintaining suspense until the end. The competitive scoring, with visible scores, hidden bonuses, and scenes offering multiple levels of discovery, is designed to encourage repeat rides and give guests the chance to beat their own records. n

an ordering zone inside a large, three-dimensional "bucket" (ed. note: the typical container in which KFC serves fried chicken); a life-size statue of Colonel Sanders, KFC's founder, aboard an iconic Vespa; a wall with Latin inscriptions that recalls the historic walls of Roman palaces; a zone with LED arches inspired by the Colosseum, and a large, welcoming children’s area. Patrons can order at interactive kiosks and then take a seat in one of the 200 available seats while awaiting their order. However, in the Rome flagship store, a unique case among KFC restaurants in Italy, the customer can also be served at the table through the Table Service & Lobby Host service,
active on both the ground and first floors. Also exclusive not only to Italy but to Europe at the Via Tritone restaurant is Kwench, a beverage platform available in only 38 stores worldwide, offering unique drinks across 4 different categories Lemonades, Boba Refreshers, Krunch Shakes, and Iced Koffee Krunch. Distinctive Taste and Plenty of Technology While the secret to the success of the new flagship store, as well as all KFC locations worldwide, is based on the proposed user experience, a fundamental part of this is also the product served: the chicken, still prepared today with a secret blend
The menu of the restaurant is based on the famous fried chicken with a unique taste, the result of a recipe that has remained the same over the decades. The chicken arrives at the locations cut and marinated. Here, the chefs hand-bread and fry it right away.
KFC AND ITALY The choice to open its largest and most iconic flagship store outside the USA in Rome confirms the centrality of the Italian market for KFC. The entry into Italy was in 2014, and today there are over 140 locations (more than 20 of which are directly managed by the corporate franchisee), with a turnover of 179 million euros in 2024 and a growth forecast of 30% for this year. The opening in Rome also consolidates the investment trend for KFC in urban historical centers, which will be one of the crucial assets for the brand's development in Italy over the next 3-5 years, along with drive-thrus: 50% of the new restaurants will be located in city centers, 30% will use the drive-thru format, while the remaining 20% will be substantially distributed in shopping centers. By 2027, KFC aims to exceed 200 points of sale in Italy.

of 11 herbs and spices according to the original recipe of the brand's founder dating back over 90 years. The chickens arrive at the locations simply cut and marinated, and are then prepared on the spot: hand-breaded and fried according to the brand's high quality standards, to achieve a crispy and irresistible product. Another important, though more hidden from the customer, ingredient that gives flavor to the Roman restaurant is technology: a transporter machine, for example, carries orders from the ground floor to the upper floor, and an advanced energy control and saving system allows for a 15% reduction in consumption. n

FLASH RIPLEY'S BELIEVE IT OR NOT! ACQUIRES MAURIZIO CATTELAN’S SOLID GOLD TOILET
Ripley's Believe It or Not! World Entertainment, operator of over 100 attractions around the world, such as wax museums, aquariums and Guinness World Records attractions, has recently completed one of the wildest acquisitions in its history: Maurizio Cattelan's solid gold toilet, titled “America.” The company purchased it for $12.1 million at Sotheby's New York. The 18-karat throne that dazzled Guggenheim visitors in 2016 and then disappeared from Blenheim Palace in the UK in an overnight caper in 2019 is still missing. Ripley's purchased a different edition of the work, the only fully fabricated edition of the golden throne still known to exist. “Finding the unbelievable is our business, but even we never imagined we would one day need a plumber on standby for an art installation,” said John Corcoran, Director of Exhibits for Ripley's Believe It or Not! World Entertainment. Ripley's plans to display the fully functional toilet in all its gleaming glory, giving guests an up-close look at the world's most extravagant restroom fixture.

RIPLEY'S BELIEVE IT OR NOT! SI AGGIUDICA IL WC IN ORO DI CATTELAN
Ripley's Believe It or Not! World Entertainment.

t was November 4, 1922, when in Egypt, in the Valley of the Kings, the British Howard Carter made what is considered by many to be the greatest archaeological discovery of the 20th century: the practically intact tomb of the legendary boy-pharaoh Tutankhamun. On the same day, 103 years later, at the foot of the Giza pyramids, just outside Cairo, the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) was officially inaugurated, one of the most ambitious museum projects ever conceived. Covering 500,000sqm (double the size of The Louvre) and housing a collection of over 100,000 artifacts spread over 12 main exhibition halls and 50 galleries, it is the largest and most complete Egyptian museum in the world. It took 20 years to build, but now that it is finished and fully open to visitors (we specify this because some sections of the museum had already been opened to the public), this museum complex truly appears monumental. It is magnificent right from its entrance, where, in the atrium, guarding the treasures of Ancient Egypt recovered over the centuries, stands the 12-meter-tall, 83-ton statue of the Pharaoh Ramses II, dating back 3,200 years. The "Smart" Display Cases by Goppion Italian company Goppion, a leader in the design, construction, assembly and installation of cuttingedge display cases and complete installations for the finest museums in the world - its display cases, for example, house the British Crown Jewels, the Mona Lisa, the Venus de Milo, the Vitruvian Man, the Gutenberg Bible, the American Declaration of Independence, and astronaut Armstrong's spacesuit - has been proudly involved in such a major contribution to global culture. In 2017, the Italian company was chosen to design, manufacture and install display cases in several galleries, and to create them, it worked for years in close collaboration with the client and exhibition designers, particularly Atelier Brückner, Haley Sharpe Design, and Cultural Innovations. In all, Goppion produced 150 "smart" display cases, which are safes with optically neutral, fully transparent glass, the result of an interdisciplinary approach combining expertise in microclimate regulation

The GEM (Grand Egyptian Museum) in Giza was fully opened last month. It is the largest and most complete museum in the world dedicated to Ancient Egypt. H At the entrance, the 12-meter-tall statue of Pharaoh Ramses II guards the treasures.

inside display cases, materials engineering, airtightness optimization, and long-term exhibition design. “It was a project of the highest level and complexity - writes Goppion - requiring vast resources and the ongoing development of tailor-made technical solutions calibrated to the physicalchemical nature and specific vulnerabilities of each artifact.” The Tutankhamun Gallery and Its Challenges Among the highlights of Goppion’s work are custom-designed cases for the Tutankhamun Gallery, showcasing approximately 5,000 artifacts from his tomb - the first time the full collection is displayed together. One of these display cases was particularly challenging for the Italian company: the one containing the Pharaoh’s 5 golden chariots. “The chariots presented an appropriately epic challenge,” Goppion staff say. “The sheer collective size of the chariots - each one is 2.5–3m long - demanded something extra. We created a bespoke 12m x 4m x 2.9m showcase, which required 8 large glass panels. Exacting design was essential to ensure maximum legibility: we didn’t want any joints interrupting visitors’ full view of the spectacular chariots. Shipping required open top containers and special A-frames to ensure safe delivery of the fragile cargo.” The challenge represented by the size was compounded by the extremely delicate materials, some of them organic, from which the chariots are made. “King Tut’s chariots have vulnerable ancient wooden parts,” Goppion technicians explain. “Protecting these requires a secure ambient microclimate with a centralized RH system. The machines that regulate the RH for this huge showcase were located inside a plant room in the floor below the gallery. These were connected to the showcase with flexible pipes, fabricated from food hygiene-grade materials to prevent any bacterial generation. This ensures the air within the showcase is kept clean and fresh for the safety of the chariots.” n

SEE YOU IN JANUARY!
"T
he Aesthetics of Cities, the Appeal of Facilities, the Future of Attractions": this is the slogan for the 13th edition of the ATRAX trade fair, which will be held from January 15-17 at the Istanbul Expo Center. The event, which at its latest edition recorded over 18,700 visitors, with participation growth both nationally (+73%) and internationally (+27%), aims to once again establish itself as a strong commercial and networking platform for entertainment and leisure industry operators from that vast region encompassing Europe, the Middle East, Africa, the Balkans, Gulf countries, and Caucasian nations. The trade show will span 5 pavilions covering a total of 55,000 square meters, where, according to the organizers' forecasts, over 350 exhibitors and more than 22,000 Turkish and foreign industry professionals will converge. ATRAX's strength lies in bringing together multiple complementary sectors under one roof, thus giving attendees the opportunity to explore thousands of products, services, and innovations across different areas related to entertainment

and leisure. These range from the amusement rides and attractions industry to coin-op machines (including vending equipment and even the latest technologies such as virtual reality); from landscaping and urban design to sports facilities (indoor and outdoor); from water parks and spas to public green spaces, with special attention paid to environmental sustainability and individual wellbeing in urban life. n

FSB FORUM ITALY COMING TO BERGAMO IN 2026 - A NEW TRADE SHOW FOR SPORTS FACILITIES, URBAN DESIGN AND PUBLIC SPACES
MEETING THE MARKET'S NEEDS
O
n October 31, the joint FSB Cologne and aquanale trade shows wrapped up after 4 intensive days at the Cologne exhibition center in Germany. This dual event, entirely focused on sports facilities, recreational spaces, urban design, swimming pools and saunas, drew 28,000 visitors from 125 countries and over 865 exhibitors from 46 nations—a resounding success that confirmed its status as the international industry benchmark. While the German edition returns in late October 2027, next year will see the launch of FSB Forum Italy, taking place November 11-12 at the Bergamo exhibition center. This new show, also created by Koelnmesse, fills a gap in the Italian market by focusing on the design and redevelopment of sports and community wellness facilities. Bergamo is an ideal location, with its exhibition center near Orio al Serio airport and at the heart

of major highway and rail connections, making it easily accessible for both visitors and exhibitors. "We're thrilled by the growing interest from companies in our new project, which stands as Italy's only trade show dedicated exclusively to sports facilities," said Thomas Rosolia, CEO of Koelnmesse Italia. "The inaugural edition will feature numerous innovations designed to enhance the experience for all participants." FSB Forum Italy, organized under the patronage of ASI (Italian Sports Facilities Association), responds to strong market demand in the sports infrastructure sector, which constantly requires renovation and maintenance of often aging facilities. The goal is to foster productive dialogue among public and private stakeholders - including municipal administrators, facility managers, designers of sports facilities, sports equipment manufacturers, hotel and recreation operators, and

The event format is streamlined: just 2 days (minimizing organizational demands on companies) but packed with exhibition space, conferences and workshops to maximize benefits and outcomes. A standout feature is an exclusive matchmaking service for exhibitors, arranging oneon-one meetings between exhibitors and selected industry professionals to spark new partnerships and business opportunities. n
