The SFNL have an exciting opportunity for senior players this year as they announce their Senior Development Squad. In conjunction with the St Kilda Football Club, the 10 week program will aim to not only further develop and enhance player skills, fitness and education, but will also aim to give players a taste of what an elite level program might look like. With the help of AFL legend Nick Dal Santo and St Kilda FC AFLW Coach Peta Searle, the program will have a heavy involvement from the Saints and will make use of the great facilities at RSEA Park. SFNL CEO Lee Hartman was effusive in his praise of the St Kilda Football Club and was excited by the program's potential to have a positive impact on the league and its players, saying “It’s great and we’ve got a great relationship with the Saints and being on-site here at RSEA Park, it’s not only their home but it’s our home as well and to have this up and running with them, it’s a fantastic opportunity for our league.” Similarly, the involvement of Dal Santo and Searle is a huge boost to the program, with Hartman noting “to have the support of the Saints and to have Nick and Peta on board I think lends credence to the program and it’s something I'm sure will be sought after.” Being the only senior league to be working with an AFL club on a program such as this would suggest his comments are on the money.

St Kilda great Dal Santo was similarly buoyant about the program’s potential; “it’s a great initiative from the league to give so many the opportunity to further their career… Worst case scenario is they’re going to be better players and people off the back of this 10 week program. Best case is they may well end up getting drafted.” Given that AFL recruiters are no longer focused solely on youth and are taking more and more chances on mature age players, this rings true. “Recruiters are now looking at a broader spectrum of players with the successes [of guys like Sam Mitchell or Callum Wilkie].... If you’re a good player and have the right characteristics, they don’t care where you’re from [so it’s great to try] to assist in some small way to [help] in maybe getting someone an opportunity.” When it comes to the makeup of the squad, the fact it is for both men and women is a key strength and AFLW Coach Searle was excited by the its potential saying “It’s a real direct link into AFLW, you’re always looking everywhere for talent.... and with more teams on the horizon there’s always opportunities for mature age people to be drafted into the AFLW.” To be eligible for the program, clubs must nominate players to the SFNL, who will then use a testing day to narrow it down to a squad of 25 men and 20 women for selection for the inaugural season of the program. However, Hartman sees this is an annual program, meaning that missing out this year is not the end of an opportunity to get a taste of an AFL environment.

Round Five kicks off when Bentleigh hosts Port Melbourne Colts on Saturday afternoon. Before last round, most would have penciled in a Colts victory here but the Demons will be full of belief after knocking off Dingley last week. The Colts will be licking their wounds after their first loss of the season against Cheltenham and will be determined to avoid back to back defeats here. The visitors will be hoping to get back Marley Williams and Jase Perkins who were solely missed last week, while banking on guns Matt Sondergeld and Kwame McHarg to continue their strong form. The Dees became giant killers last week, can they do it again? We’ll find out Saturday.

St Paul’s will be desperate to stop a run of losses when they host Oakleigh District this weekend. The Doggies find themselves in the unfamiliar position of winless after the opening month and simply must win here if they are to have a small glimmer of hope for season 2021. Normally there would be no hesitation in locking in the home side for a win but expect District to be right up for the fight in this one. The visitors got off the mark last weekend against Highett and will be sensing the rare chance for consecutive wins. Having said that there’s no excuses for St Paul’s and they must find a way to get the four points anyway they can here.

Dingley venture up to the Peanut Farm looking to rebound from last week's loss when they face off against a strong St Kilda City outfit. The Dingoes third quarter lapse against the Demons cost them their first defeat of the season and they’ll have Cheltenham remain the only their work cut out to avoid back to back losses undefeated team in the here. The Saints were clinical in their victory over competition and have a good chance at continuing their winning East Malvern and have now strung together three streak when they host Mordialloc at wins on the trot. Aaron Edwards has found his Jack Barker Oval. The Rosellas were groove in recent weeks and the Saints could also very impressive last week, knocking welcome back Peanut Farm specialist Dane Swan off a fellow premiership contender for the clash. All signs point to the Saints getting the job done but just like Richmond in the AFL, in a manner that should have fans you should never write off a champion team and very excited. Des Ryan’s men have Dingley are just that. booted 110 points or more in three of their four games and boast one of the most potent forward lines in the Highett and East Malvern finish off the round competition. This is highlighted by down at Turner Road reserve with both teams hungry for a victory. The Dogs will be disappointed the fact that no player has booted more than eight majors for the year at their narrow loss to Oakleigh District and will be thus far. Their opponent, Mordialloc, seeking a strong performance against a quality outfit in the Panthers. The visitors have played has found some form the past fortnight with wins over Highett and some good footy to start the season but haven’t really beaten anyone of note yet. While a win over St Paul’s. But it won’t be so easy here and the Bloodhounds will need Highett is important, it won’t answer any to be at their very best if they are to questions regarding how the Panthers stack up against the premier sides in the competition. challenge the Rosellas on their home turf.

Chelsea Heights and East Brighton kick off proceedings for Round 5 in a game that promises to be a beauty! The Demons have been exceptional to start the season and currently occupy second spot on the ladder. The Vampires too started in hot form but have stumbled in the past two games with losses against Keysborough and Caulfield. BY LINCOLN EDMUNDS

Division 3 action kicks off with an absolute corker between Ashwood and Clayton at Essex Heights Reserve. Both teams sit at 3-1 and the victor here will claim a spot in the top two on the ladder. The Magpies are coming off a massive win against South Mornington in a game where Jack Purcell kicked an astonishing haul of 14 goals. The sharp shooter has been a sensational pick up for the home side and has the competition on red alert with 34 goals in just four games, 26 of them coming from just two appearances! Clayton did what they had to against South Yarra last week but will need to produce a more consistent performance here if they are to sing the song. It promises to be a fascinating game and come the final siren we should have a clearer indication of where these two clubs sit in the pecking order.

Narre South will be out to stop their losing streak when they host Doveton on Saturday afternoon. The Saints were belted off the park against Black Rock last week and will be determined to rebound against the wounded Eagles. After a cracking start, the home side hasn’t won a game since Round 2 and the Eagles present them with the perfect opportunity to get back onto the winners list. They will and should do it in convincing fashion.

South Mornington look set for another tough day at the office when they venture over to William Street Reserve to take on the undefeated Black South Yarra host an in form Rock. The Jets have taken the competition by Endeavour Hills when they storm and enter this contest as raging hot square off at Leigh Park over the weekend. The Yarras were favourites with the prospect of another big percentage booster. Whilst it’s always dangerous more than competitive in the first half against Clayton before to have this mindset heading into a game, the Tigers have struggled so far and the Jets have running out of steam. The challenges keep coming for the shown the ability to stack on goals in quick time. Michael Donehue and Ned Fallon have been Lions with another big task lively up forward and they’ll have plenty of against a quality side. The opportunities to add to their season tally here. Falcons arrive with three consecutive wins and a fantastic opportunity to cement themselves in the top four. The visitors should walk away with the win but if South Yarra can stitch together a four quarter effort it might be closer than some think.

BY LINCOLN EDMUNDS

Lyndale and Moorabbin clash in a game where both sides will fancy their chances of picking up a rare win. The Kangaroos have endured a horror stretch of three games, losing by triple figure margins in each of their past three. The Pumas haven’t fared much better, the home sides only win coming against the winless Redlegs back in Round 3. In a pretty even match up it might be the home ground advantage that decides this one. Dandenong are back on their home deck still searching for their first win after last week's heartbreaking one point loss to Hallam. Despite sitting at 0-4, the Redlegs have been competitive in three of their matches right up until the final siren. Of course, that’s no consolation with the end results but they are tracking in the right direction. They’ll face a tall order this week against Lyndhurst who were clinical last round against Frankston. The Lightning booted 17 goals in a dominant display and will back themselves to put in a similar performance here.

Cerberus enter their clash against Hallam as red hot favourites as they look to keep their unbeaten record intact. The three-headed dogs have been ruthless since dropping back down to Division 4 and you wouldn’t put it past them to register another big win here. The Hawks claimed their first win last week in a thriller against Dandenong but will need to play out of their skins if they are any chance here. The final game of the round sees Frankston host Carrum Patterson Lakes down at Overport Park. The Dolphins were hugely disappointing last round and were duly taken apart by Lyndhurst in a miserable afternoon. They’ll need to find their feet quickly against CPL who have been in ripping form to start the season. The Lions kept their unbeaten record alive with a smashing of Moorabbin and will travel down to Frankston with plenty of confidence. The Dolphins need to get back onto the winners list to avoid registering more losses than wins, but on this seasons form it’s hard to see that happening here.
