This week is national volunteer week, and Riley Lockett caught up with Joey Capp, a mainstay of the Bonbeach Sharks... “It keeps me involved with the club, and the players love it. It’s all worth it, seeing them around the club and them coming up and saying g’day to me,” Cappy said. “Sometimes I think it’s the only thing that gets the younger blokes down to the club, a free feed on a Tuesday!” Cappy says chuckling. Joey Capp, or better known by the Sharks faithful as ‘Cappy’, has been a mainstay of the Bonbeach Sharks Football Netball Club his entire life. Formed in 1962 when Cappy was just 12 years old, the Bonbeach Sharks joined the Nepean Football Leagues, and as he puts it, he remembers looking up to and admiring the senior players, watching them play home or away every Saturday. Cappy says he actually remembers the first game the Sharks ever played, “We played at home, against Rosebud, We had to use tents as the change rooms, as nothing had been built yet!” Today, at 71 years young, life member of the club, Cappy can be found still supporting the Sharks in the MPNFL, whether that be at their home ground of Shark Park, or whether that be travelling upwards of an hour down the Peninsula to watch them play against the likes of Sorrento or even still, current rival Rosebud. But on a Tuesday night, while the players are training, Cappy can be found in the canteen at Shark Park, with the role of ‘head chef’, preparing a different soup for the football and netball players to enjoy each and every Tuesday. This week was a hearty Steak and Mushroom soup.
Himself, and another volunteer and Bonbeach life member in Peter Hogan, who can still be found in the timekeepers box on a Saturday, went to work to try and recruit as many junior kids to the club as possible. “It was a difficult time for the club, I didn’t think we’d get through it, but we just went out and tried to get as many young guys down the club as possible, to try and build something,” Cappy said. Bonbeach still haven’t won a flag, since their last in 1984. “Being a smaller club, not as financially well off, we have struggled a little in the past, compared to your bigger clubs like Mt Eliza or Frankston,” Cappy said.
Cappy has done it all at Bonbeach in his time, He played in the first ever premiership for the club in 1979. “That flag is still one of the best memories of my life, especially it being the first flag we won,” Cappy said. Bonbeach went on to win the 1982 and 1984 premierships as well, this time Cappy watched on as a spectator. Cappy moved into volunteering for the club shortly after he finished playing, coaching the reserves side for a number of years, and taking them to the grand final twice, something else he’s very proud of. He then moved into, what he liked to call it, an everyman role. He would work the gate, letting spectators into the grounds, he would paint the lines onto the ground, he would work behind the bar, anything that the club needed. Cappy also helped out where he could when his son Steve Capp took over the senior coaching position in 2011, who also managed to coach Bonbeach to two more grand finals, but with no wins. But one of Cappy’s proudest achievements was around 1980, when he said the club was on its knees, and as he put it, he thought they’d never be able to recover, and that they’d have to fold.
He continued, “But any player that does come here, the first thing they say is ‘I don’t know why I didn’t come here sooner’, We’ve got a great community here, everybody is welcomed.” “You have a lot of people here who just love the club, and you find, when you’re going well, everybody is here to help, but it’s when the side is struggling, it’s harder to find helping hands”. To anyone looking to volunteer at their local club, Cappy has one word of advice, “Just give it a go, I think people find they love doing it more than they’ll ever realise”. Cappy still has a taste for more success at Bonbeach however, stating he needs to see another premiership before he’s done, and with Bonbeach playing off in a preliminary final loss in 2019, and sitting pretty in second on the ladder in 2021, it might be closer than he thinks. But for now, Cappy is more than happy spending his time in the canteen, seeing the smiles on players' faces when they come off the track on a Tuesday.

DIV 1
The Frankston Bombers have won a nail-biter for the second consecutive week, with a ‘down to the wire’ win over premiership contenders Bonbeach. The Bombers started the game kicking to the scoring end where they took an early lead. But Bonbeach then controlled the contest around the ground, although the Bombers accurate goalkicking kept them in the game. Ryan Marks-Logan was the Bombers saviour in what many Bombers past players were calling “the best individual performance” they have seen. He found himself in unfamiliar territory up forward at key moments due to Corey Buchan going down with a hamstring, and he finished the game with three game-changing goals. The Sharks will be pleased that they were able to control the game despite getting beaten in hitouts and therefore clearances. But without spearhead Trent DennisLane, they were unable to kick a winning score with the Bombers clinical display up forward. Fox and Harnett combined for 70 disposals for the Bombers whilst Jackson Casey had a brave captains game for the Sharks with 28 and a goal. Frankston Bombers 12.3.75 Def Bonbeach 10.13.73 Sorrento bounced back this week to hand Dromana an 11 goal loss. In the somewhat muddy conditions the Sharks were able to jump to an early lead before two goals to Ethan Johnstone brought the margin back late in the first. The Tigers looked to be in the fight heading into half time as well, only 19 points down and looking hungry, but the Sharks came out firing, and locked down Dromana’s transition attack.
As for the second week in a row solid defensive work by the likes of Luke Brigden and Daniel Grant kept the Tigers from entering the forward line consistently, and the likes of Mitch Hallahan making plays that only grew the lead. For Sorrento Nick Corp was the best on with 4 majors, from 21 disposals. While the Hallahan Brothers, James and Mitch featured, with James kicking a hand 3 himself. For Dromana, Billy Geurts was able to dominate, with 54 hit outs and 262 ranking points, while Ethan Johnstone kicked 5 goals. Dromana 8.8.56 Def By Sorrento 17.19.121 It would have been a big night at Edithvale-Aspendale as they secured their first win of the season against Pines. The Eagles were able to gain early ascendancy in the match but from there it was blow for blow throughout, with neither team able to grow the margin far, and the Pythons closed the gap to just five points, before Michael Bussey threw the team on his back, kicking 3 goals for the match, to will them over the line by 21 points. The Eagles defence was solid in the last quarter, keeping Pines to just one goal and stalling out their attack. For EdiAsp, Nick Carlon was named best on, while as mentioned, Bussey kicked 3 goals, and won 20 hit-outs, and Sam Monaghan also kicked 3. For Pines, Lachie Marshall was best on with 24 and 8 clearances, while Jayden Adams also featured. Pines 9.5.59 Def By EdithvaleAspendale 12.8.80 Frankston YCW continue to stamp their authority over Division 1 with a 29 point victory in the freezing conditions at Red Hill. Both teams found it difficult to score early, with the wind playing a factor, but the Stonecats were able to score 3 goals, and the Hillmen found themselves with the yips as they struggled to kick straight throughout the match.
This isn’t saying YCW had an easy time either, as both teams struggled to find avenues to goal, but thanks to the likes of Matt Troutbeck (2 Goals) and Josh Butland (3 Goals), the Stonecats were able to do enough to walk away winners. For Red Hill, Marcus Del Lago was named best with 21 disposals and clean ball handling, and the Mold brothers were also solid. For YCW, Matt La Fontaine continues a good season to be named best yet again with 19 touches, and Kaiya Dias impressed. Red Hill 4.11.35 Def By Frankston YCW 9.10.64 Mt Eliza enjoyed a confidence building win over Rosebud at Olympic Park. The Redlegs had a solid intensity in the first quarter and held Rosebud scoreless to hold a 6 goal lead heading into the first break. From there, Rosebud were able to hit back however they seemed to be just a step behind the Redlegs all afternoon, and were unable to close the gap all day, to fall by 21 points when all was said and done. For the Buds, Fletcher Hustwaite was named best on with 25 touches after an minor injury last week, and Jack McCrae was admirable down back. For Mt. Eliza, Lachie Williams slotted 4 goals, while Tom Small had 25 touches and 10 Tackles. Rosebud 9.6.60 Def By Mt Eliza 11.15.81
Match Day Recaps Mornington ground out a win in a classic against Chelsea. The Gulls were able to put on a 15 point lead at quarter time, but Mornington were able to get back into the contest quickly, and took the lead heading into half time from there it was a tight tussle, with just 2 goals in the third, before both teams fought desperately for the win, but Mornington walked away with a tough 10 point victory. Matt Caine continues his impressive form post Live and Loose appearance, being named best for the second week in a row, while Jackson Calder kicked 3 goals in a return to form. Playing coach James Brain kicked 2 for Chelsea, as well as Shaun Foster, who had 25 touches as well. Chelsea 7.9.51 Def By Mornington 9.7.61 Seaford continue their solid form with a win over Pearcedale. Pearcedale were down by just 19 points heading into the first break, before Seaford stamped their authority with a 4 goal second quarter, to push the margin out to 38 points. From there the Tigers kicked away, and ran out 76 point winners. The Dales improvement this season was evident however, with 7 individual goalscorers, with Luke Daniel and Corey Hanger kicking 2 goals each, and Connor Benwell and Kyle Van der Pluym found plenty of the ball. For Seaford, Tim Broomhead added another 4 goals to his tally, and Damien Rayson had 29 touches and a goal. Seaford 20.18.138 Def Pearcedale 9.8.62 In the showcase Game Changer Match of the Round, it was a classic 8 point game, where Devon Meadows continue their push into finals contention with a stirring 6 point win over Karingal.
Langwarrin continues to be the gold standard in Division 2 football, winning by 70 points over a young Crib Point Side. It was a somewhat high scoring first quarter, with the Kangaroos hitting 50 points in that time, and Crib Point were able to score 21 themselves, but two points in the second, thanks to Langwarrin’s defence, and the margin reached 10 goals in no time. From there, the margin grew slowly, but Steve Hamill can be pleased with his Magpies side, as they were still able to manage 17 scoring shots for the match, with Joel Wisken kicking two. And Tim Cook was named their best. For Langwarrin it was the usual subjects with Andrewartha and Blake Peach having 37 each, while Josh Dormer and Mitch Mathie kicked 3 each. Crib Point 9.8.62 Def By Langwarrin 20.12.132 Somerville completed a strong win over Tyabb with a 133 point final margin. It was a case of one way traffic for most of the first half, with Somerville piling on 62 unanswered points in that time, with two early goals to Paul Fermanis, who left the game early with soreness, and two to Jesse Walker-Swain, in a defensive forward role that kept Ethan Rahilly noticeably quiet. It wasn’t until the third minute of the second half until Tyabb posted points, with a goal to Damian Playne, but the margin only grew, even with two late goals to Darcy Sawyer reducing the margin back slightly.
Lachie Willams was named best for Somerville, but Ryan Gillis stole the show with 7 goals for the match, meanwhile Jordan Thomas was named best for Tyabb, and Zach Cacciavello was also solid. It was a low scoring affair but held high Tyabb 3.1.19 Def By Somerville 21.26.152 stakes as inaccurate kicking by the Bulls saw the margin reach a game high 18 points heading into the main break, in Devon’s favour, but Karingal Coach Luke Forsyth had his men come out firing in the third, piling on 5 straight goals in an excellent display of team football to take the lead heading into the last quarter.
DIV 2 But the Panthers came out with resolve to kick 3 of the 4 final quarter goals to be up by 6 with minutes to go, but the Bulls continued to charge, mounting a counterattack with just minutes to go that was intercepted by Joel Hillis with an outstanding mark, saw the game become a seven point margin. Karingal got one final chance in the form of a late free kick to Seth Kelly, which was touched in a desperate leap by Brady O’Toole sealed the game. Ty Kirkwood kicked 3 goals for the Panthers, and both Hillis brothers were impressive as well. For Karingal, Ashley Cadd was named best on, while Tom Curren had 29 touches and Seth Kelly kicked 2 goals for the match. Karingal 7.11.53 Def By Devon Meadows 8.11.59 Hastings returned to the winners list with a 4 goal win over Rye. Four first quarter goals to the Blues gave them a 16 point buffer heading into quarter time, but the Demons found a way into the contest from there, with the margin shrinking by the third quarter thanks to three goals to Kalani Ryan in that time, and three to Playing coach Adam Kirkwood, Giving them the lead heading into the last quarter, but solid defensive play by Hastings held the Demons to just one behind, and two fourth quarter goals to Luke Hewitt sealed the game in Hastings favour. Hewitt finished with 3 for the match, as well as Luke Clark, but Wayde Delahaye was named best on for his dominant ruck performance. Kalani Ryan was named best for Rye, while Tyrren Head also featured. Hastings 14.9.93 Def Rye 11.2.68
Going into the 2020 season, which as we know was called off due to the pandemic, the Frankston Bombers were the talk of the MPNFL First Division with an impressive recruiting spree.
They won by 65 points kicking 10 goals to two in the second half, producing some of the footy, which saw them dominate the 2018 and 2019 seasons on the way to losing two close Grand finals.
It netted Alex Harnett and Sam Fox back to the club full time from the VFL along with Port Melbourne ruckman/Forward, Khan Heratuku, arguably the recruit of the competition.
The victory was also even more meritorious considering star forward Leigh Poholke is out with a broken arm, but others stepped up and they ended up having 10 individual goal kickers.
The Bombers also were hoping for a good run with injuries going into 2021 after their 2018 and 2019 seasons were ruined by the injury curse.
There promises to be some intriguing one on one battles to decide this crucial game, which is virtually an 8 pointer as if the Bombers win will be two games clear of the Sharks, but if Sorrento salutes they will join Frankston on Four wins. Jared Grant and Sam Fox will also be lurking inside attacking 50 so it is a potent forward set up, which is yet to fire collectively yet. And they will sorely miss Corey Buchan, out with a Hamstring injury.
In the pre-season, the Bombers were regarded as one of the Premiership favourites if all planets aligned, but it was a patchy start with a thrashing at the hands of Mt Eliza, the season surprise packets so far in round one and then being closed down in round three by the still undefeated Frankston YCW. However, without playing their best footy they have won their past three including a come from behind one point victory over Rosebud and then also found a way in another thriller to beat Bonbeach by 2 points, setting up the win with a seven goal third quarter blitzkrieg. The Bombers were helped by their accurate kicking after being very inaccurate in previous weeks. This week is another massive challenge as they travel to Sorrento to take on the Sharks in the GameFace Match of the Day. Sorrento produced their best performance of a stuttering beginning to their 2021 campaign to move to 3 wins and 3 losses by smashing Dromana, with playing coach and former Melbourne player, Luke Tapscott lining up for the first time this season.
Nick Corp kicked 4 for the Sharks and his opponent should be Sam Drake, while Sam Pickess is expected to get a tagging job on Mitch Hallihan, but with Myles Poholke finding his feet and playing better each week, is it a risk allowing him to roam free? This should be a terrific contest, with so much on the line and both teams approaching consistently excellent form, so it will be hard to pick. Frankston Bombers with more forward options might get the chocolates.

ROUND 4 PREVIEW After a one point loss to Mt Eliza in round five, Edithvale/Aspendale was able to sing the song for the first time last week with a solid victory over Pines. The Eagles led all day and although Pines were within five points at three quarter time, Edithvale/Aspendale’s experienced campaigners grilled their loins and ensured that another heart-breaking narrow loss wasn’t going to happen. They booted three goals to one, with star forward, Michael Bussey starring along with veteran midfielder, Sam Monaghan. Charlie Martello was outstanding as well as everyone played their role, which must continue this week against an injury ravaged Red Hill. It has been a tough baptism into first division for the second division premiers, especially in the past two weeks losing to the previously winless Pines and then last week only kicking 4 goals against the undefeated Frankston YCW. Their injury toll has not helped particularly with arguably the league’s best defender, Jonah Siversen sidelined with a back complaint and hard-nosed experienced midfielders, Andy Mathers, Dean Warry and Michael Mock also missing. Again this has the potential to be another 8 point match as the Eagles can also be on two wins with Red Hill if they win, but the Hillmen will have a 2 victory gap, if they get over the line. Bussey poses as a problem for Red Hill, who probably would have used Siversen on Him, although Daniel Frampton is a handy option. If Steve Morris plays, he should get Mick Meehan.
Which gives the Eagles a dangerous tall forward set up and then there is Tom Rourke, who is playing good footy as well. Steve Mannix has been enormous as an inside midfielder for Edithvale, but do they have enough outside runners to accommodate his hard work? That is where Red Hill appears to have an advantage with Danny Allsopp, James Fletcher and the Mold, but again a lack of a tall forward to support Jono Ross has been a concern for Red Hill all season. I am expecting another thriller and home ground advantage could decide the result, so with Regents Park being the Venue and the Eagles having more experience that should tip the result their way, but only just. Mt Eliza has been sensational, with just one loss proving they are legitimate premiership contenders. They have been particularly impressive in staying in games and winning the tight ones including a draw against Frankston YCW. The Redlegs meet Dromana this week, who had their worst day of the season last week at the hands of Sorrento. The Tigers are still getting used to the new run and gun style of coach Matt Price, and pressure from the opposition trying to play this style can create turnovers and that has been especially evident over the past two weeks. Dromana’s best is good enough and if the Guerts brothers, Billy and Sam and Billy Quigley along with Ethan Johnstone are on song, they are hard to beat, but the Redlegs run deep in the midfield led by the prolific Bailey Breen, Braden Nelmes, Tom Small and their inspirational skipper, Shane Tennant and seem to have more talent overall.
BROUGHT TO YOU BY
They would be hoping to improve their conversion in front of goal after 11 21 in a one point triumph over Edithvale/Aspendale and then 11 15 in accounting for Rosebud. Mt Eliza has also faded somewhat in second halves and I am sure coach Steve Brattle is working hard on addressing that. If the Tigers can get their game going and with strong self belief expect them to get close, but Mt Eliza is in better form and should continue their push to cement a finals spot. YCW continues to do everything right and take on an out of form Rosebud, who started with three wins, but have since dropped their last three.
ROUND 4 PREVIEW They are struggling to score and it doesn’t help that their next opponent is magnificent defensively. Even without their backline heartbeat, Byron Barry, the Stonecats kept Red Hill to only 4 goals last week, and he is set to return this week.
The Zebras are again playing on Saturday this week and with Dennis-lane likely to be out again, the sharks who as we know have a strong playing list need to ensure more players step up and kick goals as Dennis-lane has missed two games so far and Bonbeach have lost twice.
The Baker Boys, which is a great name for a band, Tom and Matt always give a contest up forward for the Buds’, but Barry, Kev Lylak, Matthew Briggs, Luke Black and Brenton Lambert along with Mac Hura set up so well, and stop the opposition from getting regular deep forward 50 entries.
Tall forward, Joe Fischer kicked 3 and will be important again this week as the Sharks meet Pines, who lost to Edithvale/Aspendale after a great win in round five over Red Hill.
Lachie Wallace has a hamstring issue at the moment, but the big bodied midfielders such as Blake Mullane, Luca Goonan and Jack Mazurek will provide plenty of supply to Josh Butland, Matt Troutbeck and Matt La Fontaine, who has reinvented himself expertly this year as a small forward. Bailey Angwin as the main ruckman for the stonecats will have his hands full in the ruck opposed to the Cummings twins, who have been tremendous for Rosebud this year in allowing gun recruit, Nick Batsanis to get first use, but he needs more support from Fletcher Hustwaite and Jai Nanscawen to try and combat the strong YCW onballers. The Stonecats seem like they are back to their premiership winning form between 2010 and 2017 and should remain undefeated and inflict Rosebud’s 4th consecutive loss. Bonbeach suffered their second loss of the year last week going down to the Bombers by two points and were without leading forward Trent Dennis-Lane, who had coaching duties with Sandringham in the VFL last week.
The sharks seem too exper ienced and talented especially in the midfield and if Dennis-Lane doesn’t line up, they should consider playing Shane McDonald deep forward and his presence would certainly keep the pythons' backline on their toes. Ben McLean was superb in a losing cause for the Sharks last week and he should be opposed to star Pines forward, Guy Hendry, who has been a great target for this young side. This one on one battle would be a tremendous highlight. Guy’s brother, Beau, has made a typically inspirational return as well. Lochie Marshall continues to lead from the front in the midfield for the Pythons, but the Sharks have options everywhere and they will be disappointed that their inaccuracy with 13 behinds also played a significant part in the loss, so goal kicking practice could be the order of the day at training this week. Bonbeach will be on a mission on Saturday with or without DennisLane and should register a strong victory.

SOURCE: GAMEFACE GameFace can confirm that the Mornington Football Netball Club has just signed a huge recruit with star midfielder Perry Lewis-Smith. Well-known as the Pines premiership hero from their historic 2018 grand final win. Lewis-Smith moves back home to Victoria for work after a successful tenure up North, most recently with Surfers Paradise in the QAFL. Coach Simon Goosey has been a help in the past for Perry's VFL journey and is thrilled to have him join a midfield which has had injury troubles this year. He is also likely to still be aligned to Port Melbourne in the VFL. After he played 10 games for them in 2019.

After making consecutive preliminary finals in 2018 and 2019, It seems by the start of their 2021 campaign being undefeated and 2 games clear on top, Langwarrin is ready to add to their premiership cabinet and move into first division. There is still more than half a season to go but the Kangaroos have been outstanding and still have one of their best players, Tim McGuinness on the sidelines. That is a scary thought, considering the former North Melbourne Rookie listed player is one of the best footballers in the competition. He is the icing on a very impressive cake talent wise with a solid defence, a deep midfield containing ex bomber, Mark Baguley, Blake Peach and arguably the comp’s best player this season, Zach Andrewartha along with the number one ranked ruck in second division, Matthew Naughton. The Roos’ also have a plethora of options in their forward line. Jesse Murphy, former leading goal kicker in second division is still finding his best form, but Matthew Peyenborg and impressive small forwards, Josh Dormer and Chad Mulvogue are playing impressive footy and hitting the scoreboard regularly. In defence, Mitch Cuthbert”s star continues to rise as an excellent key defender and Nick Tuddenham has been a marvelous interceptor across half back. All of this is what Rye has to contend with this week as they try and get their season back on track after dropping their past three, including an upset loss at the hands of Hastings, which certainly indicates their best form when they won their opening four games has deserted them. Having Adam Kirkwood and Jordan Capkin return was a bonus for the Demons and they kicked five goals between them.
But their midfield certainly lacks the depth of Langwarrin, with Matthew Hill”s early season prolific output deserting him in recent weeks. He needs more support from the likes of Oscar Whitty and Kalani Ryan and Tyrren Head, who can dominate whether it be centre half back or centre half forward. Rye needs to rediscover their early season form and they might this week, but it won’t be enough to stop the rampaging Kangaroos juggernaut from remaining undefeated. One of the matches of the round pits the ever improving Devon Meadows against Somerville. Devon has five wins from seven and firmly cemented in the top five as they aim to play finals for the first time in 18 seasons. They had another hard fought win over Karingal on the weekend, a tremendous effort after leading by three goals at half time, before the bulls kicked five goals to grab the lead in the second term. However, Neil Craig’s team is made of very stern stuff this season and they were able to find a way with this newly found self- belief to regain the lead and win a tight one. It was achieved without their best player, Joel Hillis dominating, but he still did some special things to inspire his team mates. His brother Rory just keeps on keeping on in the midfield along with Aaron Johns. While Brady O’Toole was inspirational in the Ruck. Lachlan Moss and Liam Drew continue to give the Panthers great drive from defence and Justin Kiss is a good target up forward and they still have Lachie Batten and Jordan Smale to return to that front half and another first picked player, Stefan Baumgartner.
Devon is beating teams who in the past were at least one or two rungs ahead of them and this week they come up against one of the preseason premiership favourites, Somerville, who have had their challenges in the opening seven rounds, but have won their past two to sit at a 4-3 win/loss record. Injuries have been a real concern for the Eagles, with star on-baller, Paul Fermanis being hamstrung by soft tissue injuries and is a week to week proposition. When he is out, Somerville struggles and to make matters more concerning, Rohan Hogenbirk is out indefinitely. The Eagles had a big percentage booster on the weekend thrashing Tyabb by 133 points, and the biggest positive with that victory was it got some players back into form including Ryan Gillis, who kicked seven goals, Lachie Williams and Nick Mason, so important to this team, who has been on the way back from injury. It will be intriguing to see if Somerville’s canny coach, Brad Canavan employs a run with player on Joel Hillis as Karingal did with success on the weekend. Both midfields are very even and once again Brady O’Toole will give away height and strength in the ruck against Tom Roberts, but he has a heart as big as Phar Lap in his endeavours to give those hard inside mids like Johns and Rory Hillis first use. This is a big test for both sides especially the Panthers and should be close, but Somerville at home might just salute. Karingal was gallant last week specifically in the second half after a slow start to fall short by just a goal against Devon Meadows. Though their tally is 3 wins and 4 losses and they need to win this week to square the ledger and remain in the finals hunt, or face the prospect of slipping too far behind the top five.
ROUND 5 PREVIEW Their opponents are the second placed Seaford, who are in great form and are aiming for their 4th win in a row. Aaron Walton remains on the sidelines, but they have plenty of depth to cover him with Tim Broomhead’s stellar season continuing along with Ishak Bashir. Once again they had 11 goal kickers and although the Bulls are defensively sound, how do they stop all of those forward options that the tigers possess? Lachlan Hinde is gaining a reputation for the Bulls as an excellent tagger and did a great job last week in restricting the influence of Joel Hillis from Devon Meadows. Tim Broomhead could be his job this week and if so, it will be fascinating to watch this emerging player take on one of the competition’s most accomplished performers. Matt Blair, Karingal’s ruck had his colours lowered last week and they are still missing experienced campaigners in Bryce Kellerman, Michael Burke and skipper, Dale Alanis, which means the Bulls rely so much on Tom Curran, who for the first time this season had his colours lowered last week, Jordan Pomeroy and Sam Glenn. Young players like Corey Battams and Ashley Cadd were excellent and will be looking to continue down that track this round. The depth of Seaford though seems too much for the bulls and they should make it 4 victories in a row. Chelsea has been inconsistent all season, but they have the opportunity to boost their percentage and stay in the finals hunt when they meet Tyabb, who continue to struggle after making so much progress in 2018 and 2019. The Seagulls were gallant in going down to Mornington by 10 points last week, which indicates they are not far away from challenging the top teams. When their good players play well like Shaun Foster, Zane Carter, playing coach James Brain and Simon Mitchellhill, Chelsea stays in most games, which granted, is every week.
They just need more contributions across the board, but unless they come into Saturday’s clash with the Yabbies with the wrong mindset, they will have too much talent for Tyabb. The Yabbies were embarrassed last week suffering a 133 point mauling at the hands of Somerville and need to find a way of being more competitive in games and for longer, which they have been unable to so far.
Hastings had a great win last week in accounting for Rye to remain a realistic finals contender. They are a win and over 50 percent behind 5th placed Somerville, but to use a well worn coaching word Hastings are getting the process right under Clint Einsendel. All the players seemed to have bought in what he is trying to do to return this club to finals and with the three Hewitt brothers leading from the front, it is certainly helping the Blues get better.
Ethan Rahilly has been a shining light all season, but hasn’t had enough support, although Brad Harbinson and Zach Caccaviello keep flying the flag each week.
They are obviously a better player when Club great, Paul Rogash is playing and they will be even better when star recruit, Tom Backman returns.
Chelsea will win this game and they will be hoping to win by a big margin. What the competition requires though is a four quarter effort from the Yabbies.
An important positive from the weekend was that Hastings had rotations they could use on the bench.
It was a great win by an injury hit Mornington to outlast Chelsea in a tight slog by 10 points in round seven to stay equal second with five wins and 2 losses. The Bulldogs got off to a slow start, but worked their way in the game and in a pretty even team performance found a way to win. Their opponents this week, Crib Point have been competitive in most matches and although the margins against some of the better sides like Langwarrin last week was large 70 points, 2 years ago there’s no doubt they would have regularly been on the end of 100 plus point thrashings. Credit has to be given to coach, Steve Hamill for the way he has turned the Magpies’ performances around and yes; They would have liked to have won more than one game, but there is an old saying that you need to crawl before you walk and walk before you run. The Magpies seem to be doing the first two well and will again take it up to the Bulldogs. It will be a challenge to reduce the effectiveness of leading goal kicker, Jackson Calder, but Hamill has been installing a game plan, which is working. The Bulldogs will get the 4 points, but expect Crib Point to take it right up to them.
Several times this year, they have suffered injuries during games and not being able to rotate. Hastings will start as favourites to hit a 50 percent win/loss record when they meet Pearcedale, another feel good story this season. The Panthers have two wins, which has already doubled the 2019 record and they had that victory in round one. They have an excellent junior program and many of those players are starting to evolve as regular senior players which augurs well for Pearcedale in the Future. Pearcedale beat Chelsea, so they are some chance of causing an upset here as well, if Hastings don”t bring their A game. Luke Daniel is a dangerous forward and has 23 goals for the season and Connor Benwell continues to be a permanent fixture in Gameface’s rolling team of the week although they are missing Cruz West and last week’s 12 goal drubbing at the hands of Seaford was probably their most disappointing effort so far. Their best though has been good this year and they are certainly missing one of their best players in recent weeks, Cruz West, who would be a welcome addition. Chelsea should win, but they need to be aware of the wounded panther.
