GAMECHANGER ROUND The theme in 2021 is "Support Your Mates" and there has never been a better time to remind our players to help their mates off the field of play. As we enter this years inaugural MPNFL GameChanger round, there are some incredible games to be played across both divisions. With over $16000 raised in Beanie sales for a great cause, it is great to see the Peninsula community come together for a graat cause. People are encouraged to wear these beanies on Saturday to all games to bring attention to Mental Health Issues among local football clubs. And as we at GameFace so often do, there will be a special Match of the Day for GameChanger Round which pits two sides in similar positions against each other who will see this as a potential '8 Point Match.' Devon Meadows, who have climbed to 4th with just two losses from six games including a one pointer to Rye on Anzac Day against Karingal, another club with a 50 percent win/loss record. The Bulls though are well and truly within striking distance of the Top five and could be in the top bracket, if they beat the Panthers, who would be 2 games clear of Karingal and even in the exciting territory of top three, if they get the result they desire. Devon ticked another box last week when they beat a team on the same level, who they would not have beaten much in recent years in Hastings indicating their improvement is tangible. Another positive for Neil Craig’s side is that as well as having ex star AFL player, Brett Delidio playing his second and at this stage his last game, where he kicked 2 goals, the Panthers didn’t have to rely on their best player, Joel Hills starring. Stefan Baumgartner was superb and so was Jordan Smale, who kicked 4, but the dreaded hamstring curse claimed him, while the coach’s son Leigh played another steady game across half back, so it is starting to become more of a collective team effort, which is a great sign for Devon, who are emerging from the on field football wilderness. Karingal has been solid, although probably off the mark marginally against the best. They got closest to league leaders, Langwarrin going down by six points.
They need to be given credit under first year senior coach, Luke Forsyth for concentrating on what they have gained, not what they have lost, which has allowed the Bulls to portray a positive disposition regarding their football. Sam Glenn, the acting captain in place of Dale Alanis, who should return soon along with attacking half back Bryce Kellerman followed up his 30 disposals in round five with four goals on the weekend. Tom Curran didn’t have a 54 disposal day, but continued to play well along with Scott Jansen and Jordan Pomeroy. Another positive for the Bulls was the spread of goal kickers, which reached 11 and another performance like that against the Panthers will test them. Hastings as mentioned was a meritorious win for Devon, But the Bulls, considering they have been in the finals in 2018 and Grand finalists in 2019 would be a mighty scalp and indicate that the Panthers are the real deal to extend their season in August. Once again expect another heart stopper with Devon Meadows being on the right side of it.

DIV 1
After an old fashioned style Training on Thursday, the Pines snagged their first win of the season defeating Red Hill on top of the Mountain. The Pythons were ready for the fight with experienced campaigners showing the way, working well with younger heads to lead by 8 heading into half time. But the Hillmen came out determined to kick the 4 of the next 5, locking down Pines routes to goal, and took the lead heading into the final quarter. The Hendry brothers however had other plans, kicking crucial goals early, while Nick Boswell was able to put away 2 goals late in the last to lock away the 15 point win, and finish with 4 for the match. Guy Hendry finished with a big bag of 5 as well, Beau Hendry was named best on for the Pythons with 25 hit outs to add to his 2 goals, and Lachie Marshall was a tackling machine. Josh Mold was best for the Hillmen with 27 and 5 clearances, and Steve Morris fought hard around the ground. Red Hill 10.9.69 Def By Pines 13.6.84 It was a tight game at Olympic Park where the Frankston Bombers completed a come from behind win against Rosebud. It was a scrappy first half where both sides were inaccurate, kicking 4 goals 14 between them, but Rosebud were the first to find their feet after half time, kicking 5 goals 8 and dominating all around the ground in the third term. But both sides had their supporters out in full force, and the Bombers were willed back into the contest. The scores were levelled late in the match, before a long kick from outside 50 from Jake Greely in the final seconds drifted through for a behind to break the deadlock.
Alex Harnett was at his dominant best for the victorious Bombers with 40 possessions. Keegan Downie was vital for the Bud’s in a half-back role, collecting 33 disposals, 12 rebound-50’s and 5 intercept marks. Rosebud 8.16.64 Def By Frankston Bombers 8.17.65 Frankston YCW continue to be a bogey side for Dromana, as the Stonecats walked off victorious in a 37 point rout. It was an interesting affair where YCW had an accurate start kicking 5 goals before quarter time. The Tigers, in response, moved the ball well in transition, but struggled with the final connection to the forward 50, where the Stonecats impressive defence held firm, and they were able to get plenty of players around the ball. It all seemed to be over by 3 quarter time with the battered and bruised Dromana outfit unable to re-enter the contest, allowing YCW to get their run game going to finish with 13 goals for the match. Roan Steele kicked 3 majors with 23 disposals whilst Sam Guerts for Dromana continues to star with 40 touches. Frankston YCW 13.4.82 Def Dromana 6.9.45 Mt Eliza received another scare on the weekend, grinding out a 1 point one over Edithvale-Aspendale. A hot but inaccurate start had the Redlegs set up well for a romp, seeing the Eagles failed to score a goal in the first, but they were up for the fight, kicking 8 goals straight heading into halftime with a 13 point lead.
Coach Steve Brattle must have given his Redlegs a solid spray as a result, and they came out firing to take the lead heading into the last, before stalling yet again, with the Eagles shutting down Mt Eliza’s forward line completely, keeping them scoreless in the last, however one final push was not enough, with the final siren sounding a Redlegs win. Tom Rourke was excellent for the Eagles with a 5 goal haul and was named best on for his side, while Michael Bussey, Mick Meehan and Steve Mannix all stood up and walked away with their heads held high. Young Jeremy Burton was best on for the Redlegs with 27 touches and a goal, while Elliot Simmons kicked 2 goals from his 14 touches. Edithvale-Aspendale 13.8.86 Def By Mt Eliza 14.12.96 Bonbeach and Sorrento played out an interesting contest on Saturday. Bonbeach held the lead at each break, but Sorrento were able to stay in the contest until the last quarter, being just 2 points down at the time, but a shoulder Injury to Leigh Poholke cut Sorrento’s avenues to goal, with the last quarter being all one way traffic, Bonbeach kicking 7 goals to one in the last quarter to run out 38 point winners. Nick Corp was solid with 3 goals from his 10 disposals, and Lachie Croad dominated the ruck, and James Hallahan also put in a solid performance. For Bonbeach, Trent Dennis-Lane kicked another 4 goals to increase his lead in the goalkicking and Mitch Gent was named best for an impressive Midfield performance with 4 clearances and 6 inside 50’s. Sorrento 8.10.58 Def By Bonbeach 14.12.96.
Match Day Recaps Chelsea’s hot streak came to an end this week at the hands of a Langwarrin outfit that remains undefeated. The Roos’ held Chelsea to just one goal in the first half, a brilliant running goal to playing coach James Brain from the 50m arc. From half time the match was already over, but 4 goals in the last quarter reduced the margin back to 46 points. The Gulls’ were thoroughly beaten all around the ground, losing the disposal count, hit-outs and Clearances. Zach Andrewartha was electric again with 3 goals from 29 touches, pushing his case for VFL selection, and Ryan Smyth was solid, being named best on. Shaun Foster had 33 for the Gulls, and 8 inside 50’s to be best on, and apprentice Zane Carter had 35 himself. Langwarrin 12.15.87 Def Chelsea 6.5.41 Devon Meadows continue to be a bit of a surprise packet, beating Hastings by 23 points. A hot start, with 5 goals, with an early goal to Brett Deledio, one of his two for the match, set up the Panthers well against a depleted Blues outfit, while Hastings inaccuracy also caused issues, with 15 behinds for the match proving their downfall. Jordan Smale found himself kicking 4 goals while the Hillis brothers were again best on ground, Joel having 24 touches and Rory 26. For the Blues, both Taylor Stratten and Matt Foy kicked 2 each, while Peter Mcgee was named best on, Wayde Delahaye had 21 touches and 3 rebounds. Devon Meadows 11.9.75 Def Hastings 7.15.57 Pearcedale defeated Tyabb in a strong and morale-building win by 9 goals.
A 20 point first quarter margin, thanks to Luke Daniel kicking all four of their goals for the period, ballooned to 48 points heading into half time, and the Yabbies never found a way into the contest. Another 6 goals to Pearcedale clinched the win, with Tyabb only managing 6 goals for the game. Luke Daniel is sure to earn player of the round honours with his 7 goal total from 17 touches. And Kaolan Thornton had a massive 43 touches and 6 clearances. For Tyabb it was the usual subjects with Ethan Rahilly and Zach Cacciavello finding the ball, and Rhys Chalkey was their only multiple goal scorer with 2 for the match. Pearcedale 15.11.101 Def Tyabb 6.11.47 There has been an interesting reversal of form for Rye in the last two weeks, crashing to 5th after a 105 point loss to Seaford. The first quarter was a tight, high scoring affair, with Seaford just 13 points ahead, but it became a mismatch quickly, with the Tigers kicking 7 goals, with 3 goals in 4 minutes pushing their score out towards the triple-digits before half time. From there it continued to be one way traffic, as Rye failed to contain what was an unstoppable and potent Seaford forward line, allowing 10 goals across the second half, including 3 fourth quarter goals to Matt Ravenhall. But for the Tigers, Tim Broomhead was a definitive best on ground with 4 goals from 35 disposals, and Sam Lonie was named best on. Matt Hill was a Bull in the midfield for Rye with 36 whill Nick Strickland had 37 from the backline. Rye 8.6.54 Def By Seaford 23.21.159 Karingal was able to walk away with a solid performance over Crib Point. Down by just 7 points at quarter time, Crib Point would have fancied themselves to be in the fight.
DIV 2 However a 4 goal to 1 second quarter changed the narrative in Karingals favour, and the lead only grew throughout the rest of the game, as they won by 43 points. It seems as though a visit of the MPNFL Footy Show brings out great performances, with Karingal Stand in captain Sam Glenn kicking 4 goals in a best on ground performance. While Seth Kelly kicked 2, and Tom Curren and Laughlin Cowell featured in the best. For the Magpies, Miles Shepherd kicked 2 and featured as the best, alongside Archie Shepherd and Kevin Van Den Berghe featured as well. Karingal 18.7.115 Def Crib Point 10.12.72 Somerville found themselves completing a stirring victory over Mornington at home. Somerville found themselves with an 18 point lead from less inside 50’s. But the Bulldogs seemed to dominate the second quarter, everywhere but the scoreboard, kicking 3 goals 10 for the first half to still trail by 8 points. Their inaccuracy proved costly as Somerville found no issue slotting through their goals, and led for the remainder of the match and won by 31 points. Lachie Williams kicked 2 goals for the Eagles, while Luke Rowe was excellent down back to be named best, keeping Jackson Calder goalless. For Mornington Matt Caine was named best on, and Jai Richardson had 20 disposals, while Adrian Speedy finished with 30 touches and a goal. Somerville 10.13.73 Def Mornington 4.18.42
This weekend, Sorrento and Dromana Senior Teams will battle it out for the inaugural Stelling / Morgan Shield, named after Dromana stalwart Graham Stelling, and our own, the Late and Great Geoff Morgan, who as we all know passed away last June after 35 years as Treasurer and team manager, in addition to his 211 games in the seniors which began in 1954 and earnt him life membership of the club. Morgo's contribution to SFC is unparalleled, just as Graham Stellings contribution to Dromana is unparalleled at the Tigers, so both clubs are delighted to be able to recognise the contributions of these champions together.
This day also acts as a rematch of the 2019 Division One Seniors Grand Final, in which Dromana recorded a seven point win. And just as excitingly, Many of the U19's of both teams this weekend meet for the first time since they faced off in the U17 grand final, where Sorrento completed their own win. We also encourage people to get down there early to watch Ex Collingwood and Carlton great Dale Thomas lace up for Sorrento's Reserves from 12pm In his 258 games across 13 years, 'Daisy' was able to kick 155 goals and average 19 touches a game. It's going to be a very big weekend at Dromana, and its sure to be exciting.

ROUND 4 PREVIEW After five rounds, the only undefeated team in the fiercely competitive first division is Frankston YCW. That should not be surprising considering how much they dominated the old Peninsula Division winning seven of the last 8 Grand Finals, although they have crashed out of finals the previous two seasons of Division One. However, the Stonecats always manage to find a way to stay in the Premiership race in some shape or form, and being on top of the table with four wins and a draw after five rounds, they have certainly done that. They have the perfect mix of young and experienced players, and even when they struggled at times in first division in 2018 and 2019, their backline would constantly keep them in games. It has again been the cornerstone of their tremendous beginning to 2021, but there have been consistent contributions from their deep midfield and the two tall forwards, Josh Butland and Matt Troutbeck, who take it in turns to hit the scoreboard regularly. This will be a big problem for their opponents Red Hill this week as we highlight Game changer round in the MPNFL by wearing GameChanger beanies to their games, to raise money to make local sporting communities more aware of suicide prevention. Red Hill were upset by the previously winless Pines on the weekend, but were desperately short of manpower having many of their first picked players out including their star key defender, Jonah Siversen.
With Siversen unavailable until after the bye at this stage and Stephen Morris potentially unavailable depending on VFL duties, it raises the question: do they have the height and expertise to restrict both Troutbeck and Butland? The answer is probably not. There will be so much responsibility resting on the shoulders of Daniel Frampton even though we know what a fine young player he is. The midfield for the Hillmen needs to be at full strength to cope with the Stonecats’ plethora of quality in that area of the ground, but after leading for three quarters last week were overrun by a very young Pines midfield, who kicked five goals to one. Andy Mathers, Michael Mock and Dean Warry, all experienced campaigners, were out against Pines, but Red Hill are hopefully a chance to regain Mathers and Warry this week as they had a very young side last week with 8 players having less than 20 games experience. There is a factor though that should help Red Hill, and that is the Stonecats not being familiar with the Hillmen’s unusual home ground up on the mountain, which can take some getting used to. However, the Stonecats have been running out games well this season and with that backline once again favoured to reduce Red Hill’s goal scoring options led by Jono Ross, who is set to return this week and Chris Irving, expect YCW to remain unbeaten and on top and even at this early stage eying off another flag. Rosebud was shattered after having a big lead of 27 at three quarter time evaporate in the last term and they lost to the Bombers by one point. Who knows how much that loss will come back to hurt the Buds’ at the end of the season?
BROUGHT TO YOU BY
They had been great for three quarters keeping the Bombers’ potent forward line to just three goals, but they could not hang on as Frankston kicked five goals to one. The injuries continue to bite for Rosebud, with key players such as Sean Downie at least a fortnight away from returning, Full back Jari Kennedy and veteran forward/midfielder, Greg Bentley not due back until a week later. Seb Kruemich, one of the league’s best small defenders was also absent and was sorely missed when the Bombers got a run on. This week they take on Mt Eliza, who despite being terribly inaccurate in front of goal like the Bombers conjured up a one point triumph over a very gallant and persistent Edithvale/Aspendale. The Redlegs kicked 11.21 and on that score line should have won by more, but the Eagles were accurate producing 13.8 forcing the Mt Eliza supporters to endure another close finish after a draw with Frankston YCW and a last minute 4 point victory over Sorrento. What made Saturday’s win even more intense was the fact the Redlegs were scoreless in the last term despite booting seven goals in the third. This again should be a tight tussle with Rosebud always solid in defence and hoping to increase some more strength with the addition of Kruemich. It will be a battle of the tough inside pressure of Rosebud and Mt Eliza’s run and carry, which has the ability to score goals quickly. Another one point margin would be fitting, but how will the hearts of both fans be? This match is a real toss of the coin, and so Rosebud, due to the home ground advantage triumphs!
ROUND 4 PREVIEW A vital contest which will have a huge bearing on where both sides finish at the end of the season pits Dromana at home to Sorrento.

The Tigers had a downer against Frankston YCW last week but they The Sharks have played excellent appear to be in better form and have a footy much more consistently, with great home ground advantage to get their only loss being to Dromana and these all-important 4 points. there have been times where they have treated the opposition with disdain.
Their big AFL recruits, David Armitage and Sam Gilbert have settled well into their work and even when they don’t dominate, the Sharks’ midfield runs so deep that it’s hard to stymie them. Luke Verma was again outstanding last week along with Jackson Casey in his defensive mid role, while Trent Dennis-Lane continues to make the most of his opportunities with 4 goals last week and 21 for the season. He will be a key player the Bombers have to close down and Ryan Marks Logan appears to be the right candidate for him. Unlike the sharks, the Bombers have not put four quarters together yet in any match and last week played just one, but it was enough to sneak home over Rosebud after trailing by 27 points at three quarter time. The forward line with Corey Buchan, Harry Prior and Khan Haretuku sharing ruck duties as well coupled with Jarred Grant and Sam Fox has the ability to dominate backlines, but has not clicked yet. Sam Pickess has played the tagging role well for the Bombers so far, but who does coach Beau Muston put him on this week? There are so many to choose from like Verma, Armitage, Gilbert, McDonald, Gent and Gill-Renouf and if one is closed down, some or most of the others are more than likely going to come into their own along with the son of former St Kilda goalsneak, Stephen Milne, Tyson, who has been impressive since coming into the lineup as well. Alex Harnett has played three matches now for the Bombers and the last two have been excellent, so expect Jackson Casey to be assigned to him. Two crafty experienced campaigners going toe to toe should be fascinating. The Bombers are due to put four quarters together, but even if they do and that will constitute a cracking game, Bonbeach seems stronger and should win to remain firmly in the frame for their first ever MPNFL Premiership.

The Seaford Tigers by their own admission, have under-performed in recent years. They were relegated in 2018 to second division and had plenty of chances to shore up a top five spot in 2019 in second division but were unable to do so. This season that inconsistency plagued them in the opening month, but they seem to be starting to find their best form having thrashed Crib Point and Rye in recent weeks. Their star recruit from Collingwood, Tim Broomhead has been outstanding and kicked another 4 goals on the weekend on top of accumulating numerous possessions. He and Ishak Bashir give that midfield polish, with Bashir having a great season as well. The evergreen, Aaron Walton continues to kick goals on a regular basis and is 3rd in the goal kicking with 20, but the Tigers will be without him for a few weeks due to a Hamstring injury, common in every club in the competition.
For the Panthers, it is about putting together four quarters and they have been more than capable of doing that this year, especially when they upset Chelsea, who interestingly defeated Seaford, so they are not without a chance, but Seaford even without Aaron Walton seem to have too much class. Mornington’s injury list especially to crucial players continues to grow with star half back flanker, Jake Heath (concussion) joining Will Lewis (knee), hard-nosed midfielder, Chris Baker, fellow mid, Kaelen Bird (Hamstring) and reliable defender, Lachlan Susovich, (Ankle) on the sidelines. This will test the Bulldogs’ depth as they were outplayed last week by another injury hit side, Somerville, with Jackson Calder kept goalless. This week the third placed Bulldogs travel to Chelsea, who have been very inconsistent this season losing to Pearcedale, but also defeating finals aspirants, Seaford and Somerville.
He will be missed, but they have several avenues to goal, which will make them a difficult proposition for the improving Pearcedale, who have already won two games this season after only one in 2019.
Their best is good, particularly when all their better players contribute like James Brain, Shaun Foster, Zane Carter, who is having a breakout season, Todd Gardiner and Curtis Bywater.
It was a gutsy victory over Tyabb as they had no rotations available on the bench after half time due to injuries and one of their best players this year so far in Cruiz West was also absent.
Another key member, Brad Clarke is due back this week and that will also be beneficial.
Luke Daniel continues to excite and kicked seven to be second in the League Goal kicking, and he will certainly keep the Seaford defenders on their toes. Seaford looks to have too much talent and now that they have risen to second on the table in a tight tussle for finals spots among a number of teams, they can ill afford to drop matches like this.
One of the most crucial individual battles is likely to be Seagulls’ full back, Simon Mitchellhill taking on Jackson Calder. If the Mornington key forward can be kept quiet again, that will go a long way to deciding the match. A win to Chelsea takes them to 4 and 3 with the Dogs, but if Mornington get over the line they go 2 victories clear, so this is one of those classic 8 point games.
Mornington’s injury plight is a concern and Chelsea are a much better side at home and that should tip the scales their way. Crib Point continues to improve and even though they only have one win, the effort is certainly there. A couple of poor second halves have been disappointing, but they are developing and with such a positive coach in Steve Hamill, who appears to see every match as a learning experience, the Magpies are heading in the right direction. Talking of learning experiences, this week is certainly that as they take on the league leaders, unbeaten Langwarrin. The Kangaroos for obvious reasons should win as they possess more talent and depth, but they certainly would not want to take the Magpies lightly, who should use this game as a yardstick, to see how far they have come.
ROUND 5 PREVIEW After winning their first four games, Rye has come back to earth with a thud in the past fortnight being thrashed by Mornington and then last week were belted by 105 points by Seaford, so the Demons, although still in the top five have gone back to the pack with their percentage also taking a battering. They need to get back on track this week and meet Hastings, who lost to Division Two’s early season riser, Devon Meadows, a game that in past years Hastings would have won. This clash might also cost Hastings a top five berth and pushes them to 10th with 2 wins. However, the Demons’ early season confidence has been eroded dramatically in the past fortnight and if the Hastings Heart and Soul family, Luke, Jake and Sean Hewitt continue to play good footy with the reliable Nathan Gray and Matt Foy, they will be in good stead in this match. Club great, Paul Rogash returns this week, while Rye playing coach, Adam Kirkwood hopes to be back and these two stars could be opposed to each other, which will be fascinating. The Demons hope to have mobile forward Jordan Capkin back from a calf strain to give their forward line more flexibility. Once again this is a game that could go either way and no one would bat an eyelid, if they picked one team and the other got up. Again impossible to separate, which just indicates what a great round this is, and this time the famous pin the tail on the donkey comes into the tipping equation and as I take the blindfold off, it has settled on Hastings, but only just, who need a win to stay in the finals race. Tyabb continues to struggle and it is all about being competitive for the Yabbies, unfortunately there has not been enough of that.
Ethan Rahilly continues to fly the flag for Tyabb amassing more than 30 possessions on average according to Premier Data, and Brad Harbinson always puts in. However, they don’t have enough quality to maintain a top display for four quarters and they will need it against Somerville, who are lurking outside the top five with three wins and three losses despite a catastrophic injury count. Paul Fermanis, their clearance king is a week to week proposition and so is 2019 Best and Fairest winner, Nick Mason, while they suffered another injury blow, with hard working midfielder, Nathan Gillis straining the semimembranosus muscle, which for the uninitiated including me is part of the Hamstring. When told by Eagles’ coach, Brad Canavan about this injury, with all due respect, I thought it did not exist and was actually a type of dinosaur, but reading about it, looks really serious, which Somerville can ill afford considering how important Nathan Gillis is to their set up. They were under pressure last week the Eagles, but played great footy especially in closing down Mornington’s much vaunted outside run and delivery to gun Full Forward, Jackson Calder. The Eagles displays have fluctuated, but they sit on the periphery of the top 5, which considering the cruel run they have received on the injury front is a pass after the first third of the season. For Tyabb, they must try and put four quarters together, which has eluded them so far and even if they do, Somerville will have the answers to enter the positive ledger of 4 wins and 3 losses and even the top five.
