After an early season drubbing at the hands of Sorrento in 2019, Rosebud improved significantly from then on with a young list and a clever game plan put together by astute coach, Nick Jewell saw them become more than competitive for the rest of the season. Fast forward 18 months and after losing a full year in 2020, the Buds are now a legitimate premiership contender being the only side with three wins from their opening three encounters. They have all been impressive with their watertight defence and maniacal pressure that hall marks and highlights these victories.

From Round one they were on. Against Sorrento where they decimated the Sharks scoring ability to keep them to just 2 goals in excellent if warm conditions, while being potent in offence. In Round two they faced a Dromana team much different to the one that won a flag in 2019, and came away with a 28 point win thanks to gun recruit Nick Batsanis, with a 4 goal performance. And then in round three they took advantage of a young Pines outfit in wet weather to win out by 53 points, and completely dominated every single stat.

But the Buds' face the very talented Bonbeach combination this weekend, who faltered on the weekend to the reigning premiers Dromana in a thriller. The Tigers' work ethic was terrific and they managed to get the result over the sharks, who now have to find a way to get over the ‘Buds. Rosebud has been so good at restricting the influence of opposition forward lines and midfields comfortably so far this year, but the sharks do run deep with David Armitage, Sam Gilbert, Mitch Gent, Lachie Gill-Renouf and Shane McDonald. This has the makings of being a classic and the Sharks may fail to score a winning total against Nick Jewell's diciplined outfit

Match Day Recaps

DIV 1

ANZAC weekend turned out to be a great time for some wet weather football this year, with a massive deluge across Melbourne resulting in a couple of low scoring slog-fest’s across the Peninsula. Dromana in recent history are a tough team to face when the rain comes down, and they proved it again with a tough 9 point win over Bonbeach, in Bonbeach, 63 to 72. The Sharks kicked the first three goals of the match, before Dromana got one back late in the first quarter, before taking the lead at half time. And in the last quarter Dromana kicked 4 of the last 5 to set up the win.

They found their feet again in the last however, kicking another 4 goals in the last to set up a 65 point win. For the Sharks, Myles Poholke was best on, in his best performance since his return to the competition, with 3 goals from 22 touches, while eternal stalwart Daniel Grant had 28 touches with 10 rebound 50’s. For the Eagles, Steve Mannix was one of their best, with 8 clearances and 128 ranking points as they fell 93 to 28. Whenever the wet weather comes to Red Hill, you can expect a slogfest. And their game against Mt Eliza was certainly that. A low scoring first quarter was followed by a scoreless second, as the heaviest of the rain began to set in. Red Hill were able to hold the Redlegs at bay however, and held on to win the affair by 3 points.

The Tigers’ pressure was immense, with almost all of their goals coming from turnovers around the ground.

Jono Ross kicked 2 of the Hillmen’s four goals, while Danny Alsop had a mammoth 42 touches in the conditions.

Billy Geurts was again one of the best on ground, with 20 touches and 31 hit outs, and is sure to be in the mix for the league best and fairest this year, and Daniel Marchesani was rated best on for the away team, with his impressive lockdown ability on full display, and Ethan Johnstone kicked 5 goals.

Lewis Pierce had a good day out for Mt Eliza with 52 hit outs thanks to the constant stoppages that come with wet weather football, and Bailey Breen had 7 tackles and a goal.

For Bonbeach, it was the usual suspects, with David Armitage taking 33 touches, while Mitch Gent had 39 touches, and 7 clearances. Sorrento had a big win over the win-less Edi-Asp. Kicking 5 goals in the first, and 9 for the first half, the game seemed to be over by then, as the Eagles only managed 2 goals in response. Wayward kicking from the Sharks in the third prevented what may have been close to a 100 point margin, as they failed to register a goal, but kicked 6 behinds in the heavy rain.

The final score 34 to 31. Rosebud travelled to the Snake Pit on Anzac Eve, and walked away with the four points over Pines to remain the only true undefeated team in Division 1, winning 48 to 101. Pines burst out of the blocks early kicking the first 6 goals of the match to lead at quarter time, before the Buds’ defence kicked into gear, keeping them to just 2 behinds in the second. And from there it was all one way traffic with Rosebud storming home for a 53 point victory. Nick Batsanis is firming as one of the best in the comp, with 36 touches and 9 clearances to go with 2 goals.

And the Cumming brothers, Matt and Steve lit it up in the ruck with a combined 68 hit outs. Ned Moodie was one of the better performers for Pines, with 3 goals, while Khyal Jacobson and Jacob Boyle found plenty as well. In our OBrien Real Estate Match of the Day this week, Frankston YCW defeated the Frankston Bombers in a special Anzac Eve Frankston Derby. It was an even game for much of the day with neither side wanting to give up ground. When the rain set in, it became a fierce contest with many tired bodies entering the rooms at half time. The Stonecats entered the final quarter just seven points up before beginning to kick away, with the margin reaching double digits. But the Bombers will be rueing late misses from Captain Sam Fox and Corey Buchan that would have seen them potentially win. For the Bombers, Alex Harnett was solid with 30 touches while Corey Buchan was solid with 2 goals. But Matt La Fontaine was the difference-maker. Not only was Laffa awarded the ANZAC medal for the Stonecats, but was best afield with 4 goals and 12 touches.

Match Day Recaps Tyabb’s difficult start to the year has continued with a 105 point loss to Langwarrin. The Kangaroos put on 19 scoring shots to 3 in the first half, with the Yabbies failing to kick a major until the last quarter, with Lachie Cox selling some candy late in the last to be their only goal scorer on the day. Langwarrin had had an even share of the goals, with four players kicking two each, including Mark Baguley, who had arguably his best game this year. While Zach Andrewartha broke the shackles from last week to have a massive 45 disposals and 193 ranking points. Brad Harbinson was named Tyabb’s best, while Aaron Pacey had 12 effective tackles and Ethan Rahilly had 35 touches to continue as a shining light for Tyabb. Rye remain one of the two undefeated teams in division two after a win over the improving Pearcedale in another Twilight match at RJ Rowley Reserve. For three quarters the ‘Dales were up for the fight in the twilight conditions and were down by 17 points heading into the last. However, Rye were able to clamp them down, restricting them to just 1.4 resulting in a 21 point win for the Demons. Kalani Ryan was named best on for Rye with 18 touches and 6 clearances, as well as 1 goal for 115 ranking points, while Nick Stickland and Nick Rowson were again impressive, with Strickland finishing with 8 rebound 50’s. While Cruiz West and Kyle Van der Pluym were solid, with West kicking 2 goals, while Van der Pluym had 7 rebound 50’s. The final score read 41 to 101

DIV 2

Hastings delivered a reality check to an improving Crib Point side, winning by 10 goals in the rough conditions.

Somerville returned to the winners list this week with a solid win over Karingal after the Bulls led at quarter time.

The Magpies were just three goals down at the long break before a 6 goal third term to the Blues put the game to bed, as Crib Point only managed 2 in reply.

However Somerville hit back to lead by 8 at half time. This game was close to the highest scoring game for the weekend, with both teams braving the conditions to register double digit goals.

Hastings however were inaccurate with 17 behinds in increasingly worse conditions, but did more than enough for the win. Brad Arnold continues to impress for the Maggies’ while Tom Panich kicked multiple goals. Paul Rogash was solid in his return for Hastings with 2 goals from 14 touches, while Ben King impressed with his hit outs and clearance work. Chelsea have caused one of the biggest upsets in the MPNFL so far with a 21 point victory over Seaford., 83 to 62 The Gulls’ lead at every break, with a 6 goal first quarter setting the pace. Seaford got back to within 10 points at the main break, however they were never able to get close enough to win, being held to 1 goal in the last. Jack Francis was in a world of his own for Chelsea kicking 5 goals, while James Brain kicked 4, and Simon Mitchelhill was impressive as well. For Seaford, Brodie Scully kicked 2, while Tim Broomhead and Ishak Bashir were again solid.

However the Eagles were able to pile on enough to get the job done definitively winning by 28 points, 107 to 79 For the Eagles, Tom Roberts’ tap work was impressive, and fed the ball out well, while Patrick Nagel kicked an outstanding goal from the forward pocket in the last quarter while collecting the ANZAC medal for best afield. For the Bulls, Matt Blair was solid himself in the battle with Tom Roberts, while Tom Curren yet again found plenty of the ball. In the Standalone ANZAC Day match on Sunday, Devon Meadows hosted Mornington in what was a nail-biter. Mornington was looking dominant leading into half time before the Panthers special recruit, Ex AFL star Brett Deledio brought the fight back to the Bulldogs, kicking two crucial goals in the third quarter and showing off some elite tackling skills. Devon took the lead in the later part of the final quarter before Matt North kicked the winning goal with 23 minutes gone. The Dogs were able to hold their one point lead for another three minutes before the final siren sounded. Lachie Gorka was named Mornington’s best with 2 majors, while Lachie Susovich was again solid. Lachie Batten and Brett Deledio were some of Devon Meadows best, with Joel Hillis claiming the ANZAC Medal.

ROUND 4 PREVIEW DIVISION 1

Division 1 is shaping up to be a very tight competition. And its first game pits a travelling Sorrento against Mt Eliza, who were upset by the gritty Red Hill in a low scoring scrap last week by three points. The Sharks found some badly needed form last week in thrashing bottom side, Edithvale/Aspendale, but they are still missing key players and with all due respect to Edi-Asp, the Redlegs have proved to be much more competitive so far this year. You can’t take anything away from Red Hill, but the Hillmen’s home ground, especially in the difficult and wet conditions confronting them last week is foreign to Mt Eliza and they only just fell short of notching another win to stay undefeated. This will be a battle between Sorrento’s experienced midfield and Mt Eliza’s young brigade and expect another close affair, with the Redlegs just finding a way. The Frankston Bombers were gallant in the wet against YCW in round three, but will rue their many wasteful forward 50 entries, which produced just one goal from the opening minute of the second quarter after at one stage holding a 10 point buffer.

Brought to you by

There were good signs with prized recruit, Khan Haretuku continuing to settle in with the Bombers and although the slippery conditions were not ideal for him, he had some important moments and played well along with their backline. Another highlight was the debut of Dandenong Stingrays vice-captain, Daniel Didomenicantonio, who looked like he had played senior footy for years. Unfortunately for the Bombers, their two losses in three games have been to fellow premiership fancies in YCW and Mt Eliza and they face another stern test against Red Hill, who have two victories and were brave in getting across the line at home last week over Mt Eliza. One of the key one-on-one battles that might decide this contest could involve Red Hill’s star centre half back, Jonah Siversen and Haretuku, who will probably swap up forward with in-form ruckman, Harry Prior. The Bombers have such a talented list that hasn’t properly gelled yet, while the majority of the Red Hill team has played together regularly since Jamie Mollo took over as coach in 2018 and has cohesion, excellent teamwork and a sustainable game plan to be in the mix in all games.

ROUND 4 PREVIEW DIVISION 1 The Greg Beck Oval is a ground that no matter how many times opposition clubs play on it, they will always need to readjust their game plan. It’s not new to Red Hill but despite that, the home ground advantage might help the Bombers square the ledger at 2 wins and 2 losses. Dromana was brilliant the way they were able to get the four points against a red hot Bonbeach last week to win their first game of the season. That self-belief and winning culture came to the fore when it mattered in the second half to hang on. They are favourites to make it two victories on the trot when they meet a young Pines side, who have been admirable in the way they have battled hard every game. They were exciting in the first quarter outscoring Rosebud by 8 points kicking six straight goals, which is no mean feat considering how hard the Buds are to score against, but their scoring stopped to a trickle after quarter time contributing only a further 12 points and Rosebud added 10 goals 13. As we know the Pines are blooding many youngsters this year and their form and performance will fluctuate at times, but senior players like Khyal Jacobson despite his relative youth and Jacob Boyle flew the flag with their efforts and displays.

They will need to back up again and get more support from the other more experienced players and hope the Kids keep improving if they are to push Dromana. Billy and Sam Geurts along with Dean Waugh continue to play well and Terry Wheeler’s reputation as a leader of the highest quality was once again enhanced.

It’s not easy though when opposition defences are double and triple teaming him, restricting his influence on the game, and the Stonecats are arguably the best at implementing this tactic.

Edi-Asp’s effort can’t be faulted, but they lack depth and talent, while YCW is full of both those The win over Bonbeach proves key components. The Stonecats Dromana needs to again be in the will remain undefeated and the finals and premiership Eagles winless after this clash. conversation, but it’s important they follow up the exciting display against Bonbeach with a similar performance this week. If the Tigers do that, they will have too much class for the young Pythons. Frankston YCW is unbackable to remain undefeated when they head to Regents Park to face Edithvale/Aspendale who were disappointing against the previously out of form Sorrento. The Stonecats led by that undersized but miserly defence, who are always on the same page no matter the situation that confronts them, were outstanding in accounting for the Bombers. With Blake Mullane joining the club as an elite midfielder, new coach Paul Goonan has been able to move Matt La Fontaine into the forward 50 and after three goals in round one, he kicked four on the weekend, an integral difference between the two sides in wet conditions. The workrate of the tall forwards Matt Troutbeck and Josh Butland was also impressive and this is one area where the Eagles must pick up as their gun key forward and one of the League’s elite players, Michael Bussey is struggling to have the impact the club and he craves.

At the start of the year the Tyabb yabbies were given the task of improving, having done plenty of recruiting to enhance their depth and as has been mentioned before in this column, the author thought they could make the top five.

The major incentive for the Panthers is they are seventh on the ladder and outside the five on percentage and a good win this week and they will more than likely be in the top five, a place they have not visited for some time.

Unfortunately it has been a horrible start to the season for the Yabbies and last week was ground zero as they kicked only one goal in a shellacking at the hands of Langwarrin.

Like Rye, Devon Meadows is fast becoming the 2021 good news story.

They are sitting on the bottom of the table, a place they were often in in the latter part of the old Nepean League, but they seemed to have gone past Crib Point, Pearcedale and Devon Meadows in the first two seasons they played in second division in terms of progress. However, it can now be argued that Devon, Crib Point and Pearcedale have jumped ahead of Tyabb, but the Yabbies get the chance to prove that view wrong this week when they take on Devon Meadows. Devon played a stand alone Anzac Day match against Mornington last Sunday and they fell short by just one point, but overall it was a very successful day from a financial view point and their marquee player, ex Richmond and Giant star, Brett Delidio performed well in what was a great for the emerging club and the league overall. Devon sits at 2 and 2 and are playing some good footy, and so they should be too strong for Tyabb, but the Yabbies must start putting on a better show otherwise this season will continue to spiral out of control.

After two disappointing losses including one to Pearcedale, who had not won a senior match since round one 2019, all eyes were on Chelsea last week to see what response they would give although Seaford were warm favourites to win. However, the seagulls squared their win loss ledger at 2 and 2 with a terrific win over the Tigers and it was good to see that other key players who had struggled so far stepped up to provide support to their three most in form players in Zane Carter, Shaun Foster and Curtis Bywater, who kicked 2 goals. Jack Francis starred with five goals and playing coach James Brain kicked four, while key defender Simon Mitchellhill and 2019 League Best and Fairest, Todd Gardiner were terrific. They will all need to perform like that again this week as they meet Somerville, who also have two victories. The Eagles returned to the winners list after dropping their previous 2 by beating Karingal. Things looked dicey at quarter time when they trailed by 9 points, but they were able to get their game going after that and having Paul Fermanis back and Ryan Gillis both booting four certainly helped.

Both Chelsea and Somerville played a tight game in the wet against each other back in 2019 and after the Eagles led all day, the Seagulls fought back to win at the death, but it would be fair to say that was the match where Somerville gained belief and made their run to an eventual spot in the finals, where they eliminated the Seagulls in the first week. Both teams have a strong array of talent and experience and with their confidence restored after wins last week, expect another tight tussle and although Chelsea is at home, The Eagles might just have a touch more class, and will get the points. Mornington hung on for dear life last Sunday on Anzac Day to hold off a fast finishing Devon Meadows by one point to take their record to 3 wins and one loss.

ROUND 5 PREVIEW Their first half was good, but no doubt coach Simon Goosey would be disappointed with the second half. but a win by the barest of margins could be the difference at the end of the season in gaining the double chance or missing out, so it was vital they got over the line. They need to perform better against the white hot undefeated Rye who sit equal top of the ladder. The draw for the Redlegs has been kind as at the start of the season they would have been favourites to defeat Tyabb, but maybe not by 14 goals, and were expected to win against Devon Meadows and Pearcedale, which they did. However, the Somerville triumph in round three made the competition sit up and take notice. This is another stern test for Adam Kirkwood’s men and there is also the sub plot of Rye’s ruckman, Michael MacGowan playing against his old side where he will be determined to put on a stellar display. The Rye defence will no doubt have their hands full trying to reduce the influence of the Bulldogs’ gun full forward, Jackson Calder, who has kicked 21 from four appearances.

Mornington generally play their home ground well and it’s a venue the Demons would not be used to, and this is what could be the difference between the two sides at the end of a thriller.

They will challenge Seaford, but remember that old saying; Once bitten twice Shy? The Tigers can ill afford to drop another game they are expected to win and should secure the all important four points.

After a thrashing at the hands of Langwarrin in round one, Seaford appeared to get their season back on track winning their next two games, but confronted a speed hump last weekend when they were shocked by Chelsea.

Hastings have been flying under the radar with their performances this year, which have generally been solid, and they also have a 50/50 win loss record and actually sit fifth on the ladder on percentage.

The Tigers are now part of a contingent with two victories and although it’s early in the season, it seems there will be an intense battle involving those sides to decide who makes the top five, so Seaford need to get back on track and will start as favourites against Crib Point. However, being favourites often means very little and Seaford would understand after the upset they suffered against the Seagulls. They have too much talent headed by Tim Broomhead, Damian Rayson and Aaron Walton to let this one slip although the Magpies as they have been competitive in the first month of the season. However, their second half against Hastings was disappointing as a 16 point deficit turned into a ten goal loss. The Magpies' coach, Steve Hammill will be hoping that the second half was an aberration on the steady improvement they have been making.

So to be accurate they have been better than solid especially since their best player, Paul Rogash was sidelined early in the first couple of weeks. This week though is a massive test against the rampaging Langwarrin, who are coming off a 105 point drubbing of Tyabb and are undefeated.
