ELECTRICAL SWITCHBOARD SOLUTIONS

This week is national volunteer week, and Riley Lockett caught up with Joey Capp, a mainstay of the Bonbeach Sharks... “It keeps me involved with the club, and the players love it. It’s all worth it, seeing them around the club and them coming up and saying g’day to me,” Cappy said. “Sometimes I think it’s the only thing that gets the younger blokes down to the club, a free feed on a Tuesday!” Cappy says chuckling. Joey Capp, or better known by the Sharks faithful as ‘Cappy’, has been a mainstay of the Bonbeach Sharks Football Netball Club his entire life. Formed in 1962 when Cappy was just 12 years old, the Bonbeach Sharks joined the Nepean Football Leagues, and as he puts it, he remembers looking up to and admiring the senior players, watching them play home or away every Saturday. Cappy says he actually remembers the first game the Sharks ever played, “We played at home, against Rosebud, We had to use tents as the change rooms, as nothing had been built yet!” Today, at 71 years young, life member of the club, Cappy can be found still supporting the Sharks in the MPNFL, whether that be at their home ground of Shark Park, or whether that be travelling upwards of an hour down the Peninsula to watch them play against the likes of Sorrento or even still, current rival Rosebud. But on a Tuesday night, while the players are training, Cappy can be found in the canteen at Shark Park, with the role of ‘head chef’, preparing a different soup for the football and netball players to enjoy each and every Tuesday. This week was a hearty Steak and Mushroom soup.

Himself, and another volunteer and Bonbeach life member in Peter Hogan, who can still be found in the timekeepers box on a Saturday, went to work to try and recruit as many junior kids to the club as possible. “It was a difficult time for the club, I didn’t think we’d get through it, but we just went out and tried to get as many young guys down the club as possible, to try and build something,” Cappy said. Bonbeach still haven’t won a flag, since their last in 1984. “Being a smaller club, not as financially well off, we have struggled a little in the past, compared to your bigger clubs like Mt Eliza or Frankston,” Cappy said.

Cappy has done it all at Bonbeach in his time, He played in the first ever premiership for the club in 1979. “That flag is still one of the best memories of my life, especially it being the first flag we won,” Cappy said. Bonbeach went on to win the 1982 and 1984 premierships as well, this time Cappy watched on as a spectator. Cappy moved into volunteering for the club shortly after he finished playing, coaching the reserves side for a number of years, and taking them to the grand final twice, something else he’s very proud of. He then moved into, what he liked to call it, an everyman role. He would work the gate, letting spectators into the grounds, he would paint the lines onto the ground, he would work behind the bar, anything that the club needed. Cappy also helped out where he could when his son Steve Capp took over the senior coaching position in 2011, who also managed to coach Bonbeach to two more grand finals, but with no wins. But one of Cappy’s proudest achievements was around 1980, when he said the club was on its knees, and as he put it, he thought they’d never be able to recover, and that they’d have to fold.

He continued, “But any player that does come here, the first thing they say is ‘I don’t know why I didn’t come here sooner’, We’ve got a great community here, everybody is welcomed.” “You have a lot of people here who just love the club, and you find, when you’re going well, everybody is here to help, but it’s when the side is struggling, it’s harder to find helping hands”. To anyone looking to volunteer at their local club, Cappy has one word of advice, “Just give it a go, I think people find they love doing it more than they’ll ever realise”. Cappy still has a taste for more success at Bonbeach however, stating he needs to see another premiership before he’s done, and with Bonbeach playing off in a preliminary final loss in 2019, and sitting pretty in second on the ladder in 2021, it might be closer than he thinks. But for now, Cappy is more than happy spending his time in the canteen, seeing the smiles on players' faces when they come off the track on a Tuesday.

At the start of the MPNFL Season, expectations outside Mt Eliza were that the Redlegs were not seen as finals contenders let alone a chance to break their 16 year premiership drought.

Bailey Breen leads the midfield and Brayden Nelmes gives his side the polish on the outside and the experience of the veteran, Darren Booth also provides wonderful assistance around the ball.

However, eight matches into the First Division season, Mt Eliza sits pretty in second place on the ladder with just one loss along with a draw against Frankston YCW, who they play for the second time this week.

Unfortunately for the Mounties, their big recruit from St Kilda, star ruckman Lewis Pierce has been sidelined since round three with concussion and his playing future remains uncertain at the moment.

You look at the Mt Eliza side and you can argue that it does not have the talent of teams like Sorrento and the Frankston Bombers, who they beat by a point on the weekend in a thriller.

Jeremy Goddard came in and did a great job against the Bombers ruck duo, Harry Prior and Khan Haretuku and Tom Small another key onballer was out due to Frankston VFL commitments, but Mt Eliza being so strong in the reserves and under 19s have ready made replacements, with the under 19 skipper, Cam Price making a great debut on the weekend kicking two goals and another youngster, Sam Webster also contributing.

It was my first look at the Redlegs and I liked what I saw, with everyone playing their roles and showing tremendous self-belief and coolness, when the bombers led by the enigmatic, Jarrad Grant mounted a serious comeback in the second half. Mt Eliza’s defence has been solid all year, with skipper Shane Tennant using all his experience to guide the troops and receive terrific support from Ryan McGannon, Elliot Simmons, Sam Gill, Will Antonie and the unobtrusive Mark Colvin. The big bodied Rouse twins, Jordan and Zach, which coach Steve Brattle has admitted he still can’t tell apart, despite coaching them in juniors as well as seniors, are reliable and Sam Mourney does his job every week. The Redlegs don’t really have a key forward, but share the goal kicking around through James Hammond, Sam’s younger brother, Max Mourney, Aiden Smith, who bobbed up for 2 goals and the fleet footed skillful pair in Tom Kelly and Jeremy Burton.

This week’s clash with Frankston YCW should be a corker if their round 2 clash is anything to go by when they played out an incredible draw. YCW remains undefeated and their watertight defence continues to play a big part in that. With Mt Eliza as mentioned earlier not really having a main target up forward with their leading goal kicker, Shawn Watson playing in the reserves on the weekend, The Redlegs forwards will have to work hard to apply that forward 50 pressure, which has played a big part in their success so far. The Stonecats though set up so well down back and with Byron Barry issuing instructions, the back six read the play so well, so Mt Eliza will need to be accountable like they were in the draw back in round 2.

That is the closest YCW have got to losing and that will give Mt Eliza confidence. With Shane Tennant being Mt Eliza’s biggest defender, he should get the job on either Josh Butland or Matt Troutbeck . A big loss for the Stonecats is star midfielder and small forward, Matt La Fontaine, who has moved to Kalgoorlie for work. The way though the two teams are going, this could be a dress rehearsal for the Grand Final, so expect another close one, but it’s hard to pick against YCW and their innate ability to stop teams from scoring.

ROUND 4 PREVIEW Dromana and Rosebud returned to the winners list on the weekend after the enforced lockdown to stay in the finals race and the Buds actually returned to the top five replacing the team they beat in Sorrento. Early in the season when Rosebud was at their best, they were too good for Dromana, but the Tigers are back at home where they have an excellent home ground advantage. They hung on against Red Hill last week, who stormed home after the Tigers jumped out of the blocks. The big issue for Dromana seems to be their inability to play four quarters this season and that will need to be addressed if they are to make the finals.

Frankston Bombers, after the month off were flat in the first half against Mt Eliza kicking just one goal and then falling 34 points down in the third until ex AFL player, Jarrad Grant, who had not played for six weeks, because of a 2 week suspension before lockdown got going and produced one of his special performances. There was the brilliance of two long goals on the run, a set shot from a sharp angle and a magnificent snap in the last term, when he hit the stoppage at full speed and snapped hard on the boundary to put his team in front. However, there were also the inexplicable errors that goes with the way Jared Grant has always played his footy, which is why he is so entertaining.

One of the highlights in this game will be the battle in the ruck between Dromana star Billy Guerts and the Cummings twins from Rosebud, Stephen and Matt, who have improved out of sight this season.

They included the dribble kick which missed running into an open goal in the second quarter, the shank from a set shot in the third and after taking a strong pack mark 25 metres out, he had the chance to win the game in the last minute but the kick skewed left.

It will be the Tigers run and gun style taking on Rosebud’s pressure, which was off the charts in the opening three rounds and played a big part in why they won their first three impressively that will decide the game.

However, he kicked five and without him, the Bombers would have been well beaten. Maybe the break affected their momentum as they were on a roll after their only four quarter effort when they knocked off Sorrento.

Nick Jewell’s side must lock down on Dromana’s key playmakers in Sam Guerts and Billy Quigley and expect Seb Krumich to get the job on Tigers small forward, Ethan Johnstone.

Many players seemed rusty early days on Saturday including Sam Fox, who despite accumulating possessions struggled with his efficiency and both rucks, Prior and especially Haretuku lacked touch and confidence.

The Downie brothers as usual will be crucial to Rosebud’s chances with Nick Batsanis and in what should be tight and tough, despite playing away Rosebud might get some breathing space in the top five.

Midfield bulls Alex Harnett, Jason Kingsbury and Brett Sutton were also down and the whole team will no doubt be looking for a better display to return to the winners list when they take on Edithvale/Aspendale. The Eagles were well beaten by Bonbeach, certainly lack the depth of the Bombers and require their stars to stand tall most weeks.

ROUND 4 PREVIEW Michael Bussey is one of those and should be opposed by the Bombers number one key defender, Sam Drake. It will be good to see Harnett and Eagle veteran, Steve Mannix go Head to head, but Edithvale/Aspendale lacks experience in the Ruck, which will no doubt favour the Bombers, who should record a solid victory. Sorrento have just three victories from 8 games and for the second time this year lost to Rosebud last week. They are not out of finals contention yet, but they need to find their best form and quickly to stay in the mix. Their lack of depth has been exposed due to a long injury list and also the change in coach during Covid was unsettling and it was no doubt unsettling for new coach Leigh Poholke last week, who can’t produce his magic on the field as he recovers from a broken arm. Their opponents are Pines, who at this stage are battling with Edithvale/Aspendale to stave off relegation having recorded just one win. Guy Hendry continues to present well up forward for the Pythons and their young players are developing nicely. The Sharks for years have had a prolific forward line, but has struggled for most of this year, so there’s a good chance this will be low scoring, with Jack Fisher and Nick Boswell patrolling the backline of Pines. There is no love lost between these two sides after their memorable rivalry of 2018, so a hard and physical encounter is on the cards. Sorrento despite all their troubles appears to have a shade more talent to get the points.

Bonbeach was great last week against Edithvale/Aspendale, with that much vaunted deep midfield dominating particularly ex-saint Sam Gilbert. David Armitage is out injured at the moment, but the Sharks opponents in round 11 this Saturday; Red Hill will still have to try and reduce the influence of Gilbert, Mitch Gent, Lachie GillRenouf and Lachie Verma. Veterans Shane McDonald and Jackson Casey are not the peas in the pod any more for Bonbeach and in some ways could be described as role players. Trent Dennis-Lane tough is set to be out as Sandringham, where he is assistant coach in the VFL will be playing and as outlined in last week’s article, the only games the sharks have dropped have been when TDL has been absent. They would be hoping that does not continue when they meet the Hillmen, who were poor early against Dromana before coming to play in the second half only to fall short by 4 points. Red Hill’s inconsistency has been a concern, although their best footy is good enough to play finals, but it hasn’t been produced often enough. Danny Allsopp continues to play well for Red Hill and Harry WynnPope was great in the ruck, with Marcus Dal Lago and Josh Mold again important in their fightback along with Jake Di Pasquale. But they continue to miss gun defender, Jonah Siversen and there does not seem to be a collective four quarter team effort. Even if they produce a special performance this week, it’s hard to go past Bonbeach despite not having Trent Dennis-Lane in their lineup.

The biggest match of the round pits second placed Seaford meeting Mornington. At the time of writing, the tigers were returning to their spiritual home venue, RF Miles Reserve now that their state of the art social club rooms are completed and Covid restrictions have been further lifted. They were going to play Somerville there last week, but although matches were played, there were rules in place not allowing crowds, and well done to all the clubs the way they navigated that last week. It will be an exciting day for Seaford both on and off the field as they also hope to continue their excellent form as they enjoy a five game winning streak. One of their strengths has been their forward line and the ability to kick big scores and have numerous contributors. On the weekend, their number one forward, Aaron Walton only kicked one, but Mitchell White chipped in with six and Broomhead again hit the scoreboard with 2 to give him 20 for the season. The Tigers have four players who have booted more than 15 goals headed by Walton with 21, while Matthew Ravenhall has 18 and Brodie Scully. Their opponents this week

Mornington also have the capacity to score heavily too and were wonderful last week finishing with 24 goals 5 and Jackson Calder kicked 8 to move to 50 for the season. James Cameron returned from injury and was a welcome addition for the Bulldogs slotting 6, so if conditions are good, we could get a shootout between two very good forward set ups, who both possess a number of skilled midfielders as well. Back in round 2 in wet and wintry conditions at Mornington, Seaford was able to adjust and restricted the Dogs to record a narrow win, so the Tigers will no doubt remember that victory, if the weather turns bad. That though will be the challenge of the Bulldogs to adapt and be able to turn the match into a tight struggle if required. These are two very good teams and certainly the main challengers to spoil Langwarrin’s dominance and with the new facilities on show at RF Miles Reserve, it promises to be a special day for the Seaford Tigers and the MPNFL and a win will put the icing on the cake, which I think will occur after an epic battle.

Incredibly, this week in round 12 of second division pits the top 8 against each other and the ninth team in Hastings, who are also in finals contention, will start as red hot favourites against the winless bottom team, Tyabb. There is also the clash between improvers, Pearcedale who are 10th and Crib Point 11th, who pushed Rye all the way last week that is hard to pick as well. Pearcedale has been competitive in every game, but so has Crib Point, who had their chances last week before finishing 8 points short of Rye. Mornington kicked 24 goals 5 against Pearcedale, an amazingly accurate performance, but the Panthers were good enough to have just two less scoring shots and finish with a credible 12.15.87 thanks predominantly to Luke Daniel, who was outstanding and continued his excellent season by kicking seven to take his overall tally to 32. The Magpies will need to cut off supply to Daniel and reduce the effectiveness of Cruiz West to get the points. Early in the season, Cribby won easily, but Pearcedale’s performances have been on an upward spiral since then and seem to have more talent to win their third game of the season, but expect a tight contest. Hastings are a game and over 20 percent outside the top five and require a percentage booster against Tyabb to be clicking at the heels of the other contenders looking to fill a spot in the elimination final, with the top three stealing a march on the rest of the field.

Karingal was able to lift their percentage over 100 last week by smashing Tyabb and Hastings, who are at 91 percent currently, would be aiming to do that as the Yabbies are struggling to score. Hastings must score heavily too and Jake Hewitt is a key in that quest. The Blues were pretty competitive again last week against Chelsea although coach Clint Einsedel felt Hastings were not at their best. However, they should still be far too strong for Tyabb, whose Annus Horribilis just gets worse. Ethan Rahilly and Brad Harbinson turn up each week, but sadly for the Yabbies the talent falls away too quickly and Hastings are on a finals mission. So to the matches involving the top 8. Let’s start with the fifth placed Chelsea, one of four sides on five wins with 4th placed Somerville, Rye and Devon Meadows, who are sixth and seventh respectively. The Seagulls, after a horror start are improving each week and once again their most experienced players are leading the way including Shaun Foster, who could be having a career best season, playing coach James Brain, Gun midfielder Todd Gardiner and key forwards Jack Francis and Curtis Bywater, who kicked five last week and was the difference between winning and losing against Hastings. It was a courageous effort by Chelsea as they were hit by injuries in the game and did not have a bench for much of the second half but still found a way to get the valuable four points.

The emergence in the ruck of Jake Spasevski has been a plus for the Gulls and this week he comes up against one of Karingal’s keys in Matt Blair. The Bulls are coming off a belting of Tyabb and will be looking to take that form and lift it to another level if they are to win and join Chelsea on five wins, which will put them on the edge of the top five, so this is a classic 8 point game. Skipper Dale Alanis has had his share of injuries but made an impact last week with three goals and if Sam Glenn and Tom Curran, who passed the 50 disposal mark for the second time continue their stellar seasons along with Lachie Hinde, who should get another run with role against maybe one of Foster, Gardener or Zane Carter, the bulls will be in the hunt. The home ground advantage will also assist Karingal, but the seagulls appear to have more proven forward options and that should be the difference, which would put the Seagulls 8 points clear of the Bulls. That’s how vital this match is. Another telling encounter regarding finals aspirations sees two teams with a 5-4 record, Rye and Devon Meadows. The Percentages of these two are a concern with Rye at 91 percent after just outlasting Crib Point on the weekend, while Devon’s percentage suffered after being outplayed by league leader, Langwarrin to the tune of 93 points. It was Devon Meadows worst performance of the season and has seen them drop out of the top five for the first time. It indicates the Panthers still have work to do to compete with the best.

ROUND 5 PREVIEW

Mind you, Rye is in the same boat as they lost four in a row to teams ahead of them before the Covid break. This is definitely another one of those 8 point classics. Earlier in the season in the wet, Rye at home narrowly beat Devon and outside last week, you could argue Devon was playing better footy than the Demons in the month before lockdown. The Panthers are developing a good record at home and that will help their cause this week with Joel Hills again pivotal to their aspirations along with brother Rory and Stefan Baumgartner. Rye needs Matt Hill to continue his consistent form and Michael MacGowan to take advantage in the ruck to be right in the contest. Lachie Batten has had some good days for Devon, but also matches where he has been quiet, so a more consistent performance from their prized recruit is crucial. Down back, the coach’s son. Leigh Craig has been a revelation for the Panthers with his reliability and young Nathan Drew is developing nicely.

The great matches continue in Round 12 with the undefeated league leader and overwhelming flag favourite, Langwarrin meeting Somerville. The Eagles were good for a half last week against Seaford, but the Tigers’ depth was too much in the second half and they won easily.

The forward line for the Roos has a plethora of options and last week former Sydney Swans player Zac Foot added more headaches to opposition teams by booting six to support Josh Dormer, Mitchell Mathie and Chad Mulvogue.

From last week’s team, key forwards Jess Murphy and Somerville was certainly in the Matthew Peyenborg still have to conversation pre-season to win the return.
