ELECTRICAL SWITCHBOARD SOLUTIONS
This week is national volunteer week, and Riley Lockett caught up with Joey Capp, a mainstay of the Bonbeach Sharks... “It keeps me involved with the club, and the players love it. It’s all worth it, seeing them around the club and them coming up and saying g’day to me,” Cappy said. “Sometimes I think it’s the only thing that gets the younger blokes down to the club, a free feed on a Tuesday!” Cappy says chuckling. Joey Capp, or better known by the Sharks faithful as ‘Cappy’, has been a mainstay of the Bonbeach Sharks Football Netball Club his entire life. Formed in 1962 when Cappy was just 12 years old, the Bonbeach Sharks joined the Nepean Football Leagues, and as he puts it, he remembers looking up to and admiring the senior players, watching them play home or away every Saturday. Cappy says he actually remembers the first game the Sharks ever played, “We played at home, against Rosebud, We had to use tents as the change rooms, as nothing had been built yet!” Today, at 71 years young, life member of the club, Cappy can be found still supporting the Sharks in the MPNFL, whether that be at their home ground of Shark Park, or whether that be travelling upwards of an hour down the Peninsula to watch them play against the likes of Sorrento or even still, current rival Rosebud. But on a Tuesday night, while the players are training, Cappy can be found in the canteen at Shark Park, with the role of ‘head chef’, preparing a different soup for the football and netball players to enjoy each and every Tuesday. This week was a hearty Steak and Mushroom soup.
Himself, and another volunteer and Bonbeach life member in Peter Hogan, who can still be found in the timekeepers box on a Saturday, went to work to try and recruit as many junior kids to the club as possible. “It was a difficult time for the club, I didn’t think we’d get through it, but we just went out and tried to get as many young guys down the club as possible, to try and build something,” Cappy said. Bonbeach still haven’t won a flag, since their last in 1984. “Being a smaller club, not as financially well off, we have struggled a little in the past, compared to your bigger clubs like Mt Eliza or Frankston,” Cappy said.
Cappy has done it all at Bonbeach in his time, He played in the first ever premiership for the club in 1979. “That flag is still one of the best memories of my life, especially it being the first flag we won,” Cappy said. Bonbeach went on to win the 1982 and 1984 premierships as well, this time Cappy watched on as a spectator. Cappy moved into volunteering for the club shortly after he finished playing, coaching the reserves side for a number of years, and taking them to the grand final twice, something else he’s very proud of. He then moved into, what he liked to call it, an everyman role. He would work the gate, letting spectators into the grounds, he would paint the lines onto the ground, he would work behind the bar, anything that the club needed. Cappy also helped out where he could when his son Steve Capp took over the senior coaching position in 2011, who also managed to coach Bonbeach to two more grand finals, but with no wins. But one of Cappy’s proudest achievements was around 1980, when he said the club was on its knees, and as he put it, he thought they’d never be able to recover, and that they’d have to fold.
He continued, “But any player that does come here, the first thing they say is ‘I don’t know why I didn’t come here sooner’, We’ve got a great community here, everybody is welcomed.” “You have a lot of people here who just love the club, and you find, when you’re going well, everybody is here to help, but it’s when the side is struggling, it’s harder to find helping hands”. To anyone looking to volunteer at their local club, Cappy has one word of advice, “Just give it a go, I think people find they love doing it more than they’ll ever realise”. Cappy still has a taste for more success at Bonbeach however, stating he needs to see another premiership before he’s done, and with Bonbeach playing off in a preliminary final loss in 2019, and sitting pretty in second on the ladder in 2021, it might be closer than he thinks. But for now, Cappy is more than happy spending his time in the canteen, seeing the smiles on players' faces when they come off the track on a Tuesday.
Dromana's Strong Heart and Winning Culture Still Remains It was always going to be big shoes to fill for Matt Price when he replaced one of footy’s nice guys and great coaches on the Mornington Peninsula, Rikki Johnson, but it would be fair to say Price has managed to keep the tigers’ DNA intact this season, which is self-belief and a never say die attitude. That has been especially evident since the competition resumed after the covid lockdown as Dromana, who were struggling somewhat with just 2 wins in the first seven rounds, have bounced back with narrow wins of 4 points over Red Hill and Rosebud respectively. These tight victories have ensured the reigning premiers are back in the finals race and only trail the fifthplaced Rosebud by percentage. Their run and gun game introduced by Price has been successful at times and their core players so important in their back to back premiership success specifically ruckman Billy Guerts, who is having a stellar season along with brother Sam, Billy Quigley and smart forward Ethan Johnstone. An issue for the Tigers has been playing four quarters and they will need to ensure they are capable of doing that this week when they meet Bonbeach, who jumped over Mt Eliza to move to second. Although Frankston YCW are undefeated on top of the table, there is a consensus that Bonbeach’s best footy is better than anyone else.
Their midfield runs deep with numerous options able to step in and play attacking and defensive roles. The backline headed by Ben McLean, the unobtrusive 150 gamer, Matthew Douglas and Paul Corrigan have been solid along with Lachlan Stenning. Trent Dennis-Lane didn’t play and as outlined in previous articles, when the Sharks have lost their two games, TDL had not played, but Owen Hulett, who has had his injury concerns stepped up with five and star recruit Sam Gilbert continues to take his game to another level. One area where Dromana though might dominate is the Ruck as Tom Hogan has been sidelined with injury and Billy Guerts has dominated every match, so no doubt sharks coach, Adrian Connolly will be working on nullifying his influence by ensuring his gun group of midfielders can get on top and win the clearances. It should be an exciting game with two teams willing to take the game on, but Bonbeach has too much talent and are warm favourites to record a solid win.

ROUND 4 PREVIEW Frankston YCW’s much vaunted backline, which is guided by assistant coach Craig Milward, gets to take on the Frankston Bombers’ multi talented forward set up, which has yet to fire together this season. Corey Buchan has had his moments and Jared Grant dominated in the second half against Mt Eliza to nearly drag his team over the line, while the ruck duo of Harry Prior and Khan Haretuku, who kicked three last week, have been handy at times when resting down forward, but there have been bouts of inconsistency and quiet periods for that quartet. They will need to be on song to try and dismantle the Stonecats' cohesive back six, who may get Kev Lilac back after he was forced out before their mighty win over Mt Eliza with an abdominal strain. Alex Harnett is having a great season for the Bombers also booted three in the win over Edithvale/Aspendale and earlier in the season had a titanic battle against YCW’s hardened on ballers, like Luca Goonan, Blake Mullane and Kyle Hutchinson, who were all super against Mt Eliza. Sam Fox is in good form for the Bombers as well, who will need Sam Drake to be at his lockdown best to stifle the influence of either Josh Butland or Matt Troutbeck. Sam Pickess has played a lockdown role for the Bombers this year, restricting Blake Mullane when the two sides met in round three and he may again get a run with role. He could actually come up against his brother, Josh, who returned to the Stonecats’ team last week for the first time in almost a decade and played well. The Bombers will enjoy the familiar surrounds of Greg Beck Oval, their home ground, but YCW again seem to have the edge mainly through that watertight defence, who have conceded an average of just over seven goals a game all season.
Two sides who suffered their worst defeats of the year last week face off. Mt Eliza, who lost just their second game of the season by 51 points, while Red Hill was outplayed to the tune of 63 points by Bonbeach, with their forward line malfunctioning and restricted to just four goals. The Hillmen are almost out of finals contention as their percentage took a battering last week and since coach Jamie Mollo took over in 2018, Red Hill has prided themselves on effort and being competitive, but they were never in the hunt last week kicking only one goal 4 in the first three quarters. That is certainly not the Red Hill the competition has come to admire over the past three years. They hoped to channel their competitiveness and desperation from the round 3 encounter with Mt Eliza earlier in the season, when they pipped the Redlegs by three points in an impressive display. Meanwhile, Mt Eliza dropped to third place on the ladder as they couldn’t cope with YCW’S organization and pressure and struggled to hit the scoreboard on a regular basis. They were also hindered by the late withdrawal of two of their best players, inside midfielder Bailey Breen and the club’s heart and soul, the skipper, Shane Tennant and they were badly missed. The Redlegs as outlined in this article last week are an even team and need all players to perform their roles; the reason they are winning most of the close ones, but last week it was left to too few like Red Hill. If the Hillmen play to their optimum, they can push Mt Eliza, but the Redlegs at home should do enough to get over the line.
ROUND 4 PREVIEW Pines recorded their second win of the year when they defeated arch rivals Sorrento last Saturday and I am sure this victory could not have tasted any sweeter for the Pythons considering the recent history of these two sides. What made it even better was Pines was 22 points down at three quarter time, but played one of their best quarters of the season in the last to run over the top of the out of storts sharks by kicking six goals to two. Guy Hendry, who loves playing Sorrento and particularly beating them kicked three goals and veteran, Brendan Barfoot chipped in with 4. Luke Dalmau and the indefatigable Beau Hendry led from the front for the Pythons as Sorrento’s season went from bad to worse. The Pines now will be aiming for two wins in a row for the first time in 2021 and move a step closer to avoiding relegation when they travel to Rosebud, who were on the wrong end of a thriller last week against Dromana. The Buds have struggled to put together consistent footy since round three, but are still in the top five by just over one percent from Dromana, however that brilliant start to the season seems like a distant memory.
There is still plenty of footy to be played and Rosebud thrashed Pines by nine goals in their previous meeting, when goal scoring opportunities and options were easier to find. The Pines are actually more productive on the scoreboard at the moment than Rosebud and their experienced players are in good form. Both have so much to play for, but Rosebud’s home-ground advantage should prove to be the point of difference. With Pines winning last week and Edithvale/Aspendale suffering a 10 goal belting at the hands of Frankston Bombers, the proud Eagles are now firming as favourites to be demoted to second division for next season. They play a team in round 12 arguably at their lowest ebb on field performance wise for many years, Sorrento. The Sharks dominated the home and away seasons in Division One in 2018 and 19, but are certainly a shadow of those teams this year. Injuries have hit them hard and the depth that they enjoyed in recent times has also evaporated.
They did lead for three quarters last week, but couldn’t hang on despite a magnificent game from Reid Nanscawen.
The coaching change, which occurred during the covid layoff is yet to yield dividends either, with Leigh Poholke still without a win as coach.
It appears the Buds at times have lost their coolness under pressure after that characteristic was a hallmark of those great wins in the opening three rounds.
His brother Myles has been a positive since returning from the AFL and continues to feature in the best players every match while Liam Frazer has also been solid.
Sean Downie hasn’t had the season he had in 2019, affected mainly by injury, while Nick Batsanis' output is not what it was when he burst on the scene at the start of the season.
However, any side that is missing players of the calibre of the Hallihan brothers, Leigh Poholke and Luke Tapscott for long periods of time like Sorrento are will struggle and that is what is confronting the sharks at the moment.
They have a slightly superior percentage to the teams immediately above them in Rosebud and Dromana, but are a win behind, so the season is not over yet, but they need to improve quickly. The same has to be said for Edi/Asp, if the Eagles are to remain in the top division next year. They seemed to have relied on the same players to perform well and a prime example of that is key defender Nick Carlon, who is approaching career best form. Charlie Martello has had some decent moments and wily veteran, Mark Mullins has been his usual reliable self, down back considering how often the ball has been in the Eagles” defensive 50. Regents Park is always a challenge for any team, no matter where the Eagles are on the ladder and this contest will be no exception considering the indifferent season the Sharks are experiencing, but on face value, Sorrento has played better more often than the Eagles and will win their 4th game to stay in the finals race.

SOMERVILLE SOAR TO SPECTACULAR HEIGHTS Somerville’s coach Brad Canavan is very passionate about his footy, but he could be forgiven going into last Saturday’s match against the undefeated league leaders Langwarrin with less passion than usual considering the Kangaroo’s dominance and their long injury list to key players. However, the man they call ‘’Wig” was able to orchestrate what he has described as one of the best wins he has ever been involved in, which has put the Eagles back in the premiership mix. They led all day against Langwarrin and had contributors everywhere, with Daniel Marshall and Kane McKenzie, who has been superb all season in defence leading the way, as through necessity the Eagles are having to blood youngsters and they are contributing like they have been in the Senior side for years. There were more injuries on the weekend with one of their star midfielders, Lochie Williams likely to be sidelined for a fortnight. Paul Fermanis is a week by week proposition, the Sutton brothers are gone for the season and Rohan Hogenbirk is in doubt of playing at all this year. Brad Canavan no doubt will be hoping that the young replacements they bring in will keep performing as they aim for more performances like the weekend. This week they play Rye, who have had one victory since round four and that was an unimpressive one against Crib Point, when the competition returned after the enforced break. The Demons were thrashed by Devon Meadows on the weekend and although they are still a game outside the top five, they seem miles away from playing finals and should find Somerville-no matter how undermanned they are-too strong.
Rye seems to be relying on too few particularly Nick Strickland, who is enjoying a fabulous season and Matt Hill to play well every week for the team to get the result they desire. And Kalani Ryan was impressive in his return, and has proven to be somewhat of a breakout for the Demons this season, averaging 15 possessions a game and providing desperately needed pressure that the entire side will need to provide for a chance of victory this week, something that has been lacking in weeks past. As a Result, expect the wounded Eagles to soar for another week, away from home.

ROUND 5 PREVIEW Devon Meadows after being thrashed by Langwarrin bounced back in fine style last week to move back into the top five, a spot they have filled for most of the year. The Panthers were excellent the way they dismantled Rye after losing narrowly to them at the start of the season, which indicates that they have improved, although by coach Neil Craig’s own admission last week, they have some work to do to reach Langwarrin’s standard. However, after being a bottom four side for several years, it seems Devon has graduated from the bottom echelon of the ladder and are right in the mix to break their 18 year finals drought. They play one of their main rivals for a top five berth in Chelsea, who the Panthers displaced in fifth place after the seagulls were kept to a draw by Karingal. Chelsea struggled early and were without arguably their best player this year, Shaun Foster, trailing by 23 points at half time, but found some of their recent impressive form in the second half to restrict the Bulls to just two goals after the long interval. Forward Jack Francis was also out, but both are tipped to return this round. Curtis Bywater was productive again with four goals and Dave Barton continued his outstanding season, but there would still be a concern that there is a big gap between Chelsea’s best and worst footy.
They will have to play four quarters to take down the Panthers as these are two evenly matched sides. Both clubs have fine midfields with Devon’s Joel Hillis and Todd Gardener from Chelsea two of the best onballers in the competition and barometers for their respective clubs’ success.
It puts them a game and a half outside the top five and it will be a tall order trying to beat a vicious Langwarrin combination. It would be wonderful to see two of the second division’s most prolific ball winners, Tom Curren of Karingal and Langwarrin’s Zac Andrewartha go head to head.
Devon Meadows is starting to make their home ground a fortress, although Chelsea is more experienced, so this will be hard to pick with so much on the line for the teams in their quest to play finals.
The pair could accumulate over 100 disposals between them, but it is the depth of the kangaroos’ midfield that should prove the difference here along with their plethora of goal scoring options. Langwarrin should return to the winners list and at the same time virtually extinguish Karingal’s finals prospects.
Langwarrin had a letdown last week and any loss hurts, but the Kangaroos have been up a long time particularly before the covid break and when you are undefeated as a season starts to ramp up for the business end, which this one is beginning to, the defeat to Somerville could be just what the doctor ordered. They can refocus and readjust where needed and rediscover any enthusiasm or self-belief that may have been eroded by a hungry eagles outfit. Langwarrin’s best has been far too good for all comers and they have generally started well when they have won, but last week they trailed all day. This round they take on Karingal, who until Somerville knocked them off had got closest to the Roo’s pushing them all the way earlier in the season going down by just six points. The Bulls were pretty good last week. However, there would be disappointment that they allowed a 23 point advantage at half time to disappear, with the game ending in a draw.
Mornington moved to outright second and ruined Seaford’s coming home party at RF Miles Reserve in front of their state of the art new clubrooms, which are spectacular. Jackson Calder booted 3 and James Cameron was again productive as for the second week in a row. They were accurate in front of goal kicking 15 9 99 after a staggering 24.5 last week, while Seaford had a bad day in front of the big sticks finishing with 7.21, which in fact was four more scoring shots, but the efficiency of the Dogs is becoming a real weapon for them. The Bulldogs take on Hastings in round 13 and although the Blues beat Tyabb, they missed an opportunity for a big percentage booster to remain heavily involved in the race for the top 5. Their backline was very good, with the Yabbies only kicking three goals and they were all in the second term when they managed to level the scores at half time.
ROUND 5 PREVIEW
However, Clint Einsedel’s men closed their opponents down in the second half, but would be disappointed to kick just 8 goals and win by 34 points.
Pearcedale have certainly jumped ahead of Tyabb and have too much talent and depth to let this one slip as their promising season continues.
They are still in the finals frame, but must play much better to take on Mornington. A big question is who will Einsedel play on Calder? A matchup involving gun key defender Paul Rogasch would be mouth watering, but is that robbing Peter to pay Paul, considering Rogasch is magnificent playing as an interceptor?
I write it every week that Crib Point is making rapid strides in regard to being more competitive on the field, However, they also have lots to but I am sure coach Steve Hamill play for so expect them to win would love more wins and the comfortably against a tenacious Magpies had their chances last and willing Crib Point. week, but fell short by just two points.
Another option would be the reliable Tom Backman, but Hastings must also stop the supply from the Bulldogs’ mids, which has become a strength in recent weeks. It seems to be too much of an ask and Mornington should march on and move a step closer to clinching that vital double chance. Pearcedale has three wins after hanging on for an exciting two point triumph over Crib Point. The Panthers since the Magpies beat them easily earlier in the season have been brave in every game they have played since. They will be warm favourites to make it two in a row this week when they encounter Tyabb.
No doubt it would be heartbreaking considering they were tardy out of the blocks being 19 points in arrears at the first change before a five goal second quarter got them back in touch. The Magpies out scored Pearcedale by 4 goals to two in the second half. However, they would rue not kicking a goal in the first quarter, which appeared to cost them their second victory of the season. It will be tough this week as they clash with Seaford on the rebound. The Tigers played at their long-time home ground, RF Miles Reserve for the first time in four years and were keen to cap off a big day with a win.
However, Mornington spoiled the party and the Tigers woeful inaccuracy was certainly frustrating. Despite the loss, they are still in a good position to claim a double chance in the finals as they have a The Yabbies as already mentioned great percentage and will be aiming going by the margin of losing by to give that a boost against the 34 points were ok against young Magpies. Hastings and one positive was after another poor start, when Tim Broomhead had another terrific they only registered one behind in game for the Tigers and ruck, the first quarter, they outscored Macklin Raine was again tireless, but the blues by three goals to one in the team effort that had epitomized the second to turn at half time at Seaford’s five game winning run twenty three apiece. didn’t seem as evident as usual. However, the inability to play good footy for more than a short period continues to be an issue for the Yabbies and they added just three behinds in the second half.
Miles Shepherd was a great target for Crib Point with four goals last week and will again be important for his team’s chances of posting a decent score.
The Tigers though have too much talent despite being without three crucial players due to injury in playing coach, Zac Vansittart and Roarke Fischer with concussion and a possible long term knee ailment to Matt Ravenall.
