Match Day Recaps
DIV 1
The Frankston Bombers got into gear this week with a solid win over a Siversen-less Red Hill. The Bombers were able to keep the Hillmen to just one goal in the first half, with Tom Slattery scoring 25m out. From there the Bombers never truly let them back in, but inaccurate kicking, with 21 behinds for the match, saw the margin be much closer than the stats sheet would suggest. 75 to 46 Corey Buchan was electric for the Bombers with 2 first half goals and 3 for the match, while Khan Haretuku kicked 2 goals and was a prominent figure. Harry Prior continues to dominate the Hit-Outs having 36 and the latter 42. Jono Ross was kept quiet this week being kept to just one goal, while Kane Hawkins fought admirably down back, with 17 Rebound 50s from 43 touches, while Danny Allsop was impressive with 37 touches and 5 clearances. Pines had what can only be described as a day to forget with Dromana delivering a 109 point hiding, 169 to 60. The Pythons were just 2 points down at quarter time before an impressive defensive performance held them to just 4 points in the second, allowing the Tigers to build a 42 point buffer at the long break. From there the margin only seemed to grow with a 16 goal to 6 second putting the game to bed. For the Tigers, Reece Wilde was named the best with 4 goals, and Ethan Johnstone kicked 4 goals himself. Billy and Sam Geurts combined for 5 and outclassed their opposites on the Pythons’ squad. For Pines, Guy Hendry kicked 3 goals while Ned Moodie kicked 2, and Ben Thomas was named Pines best.
Frankston YCW ventured to Regents Park to face a EDI-ASP team who face a very long season as they suffered a 11 goal loss. A five goal to 1 first quarter for the Stonecats turned into a 53 point buffer heading into half time, with their class simply being too much, but there was an improvement in their performance from last week. With Mick Meehan kicking 4 goals from 13 touches, and contested beast Steve Mannix still being the pick of their midfield, with 32 touches and 5 inside 50s. YCW was able to share the goals around, but Josh Butland had an outstanding day with 7 majors, while Lachie Wallace and BJ Credlin continue to impress. The final score read 72 to 138. Bonbeach bounced back to send Rosebud crashing back to reality with a 70 point victory. Bonbeach kicked the first 4 goals of the match and never looked to give the lead away, with their defensive pressure keeping the Buds’ forwards at bay. Their dominance was matched only by their inaccuracy, as they kicked 20 behinds for the match in what was as close to perfect conditions as there were likely to be for some time. Rosebud will likely be frustrated with the performance on the day, as they were only able to kick 5 goals for the match, with Liam Tidd being the pick of the scorers with two. Jackson McRae battled hard for the Buds with 11 one percenters and 6 rebounds, while Dale Marshall also found the ball coming to him often
Trent Dennis-Lane returned from his assistant coaching role with Sandringham to kick 4, while fellow Ex-Saint Sam Gilbert had an absolute belter with 43 disposals and 8 clearances for 182 Ranking points. It is sure to be looked back on as one of the best games of the season as Mt Eliza were able to win in a last gasp effort over Sorrento. It was an even first quarter before Sorrento found themselves up by 25 points. But the Redlegs were able to hold them to just 1 goal in the 3rd and managed to take the lead, and from there it was a blow for blow affair. Sorrento lead late by just two points before Shawn Watson kicked the winner with just moments to go. And when the final siren sounded, the home crowd erupted, and stormed the field in celebration, to which one AFL player in attendance for the opposition, Max Gawn, could not believe. Watson was joined by Will Antonie in kicking 3 goals, and interestingly, not one Mt Eliza player reached 20 disposals, with Braden Nelmes having the most with 18. Leigh Poholke returned for Sorrento to kick 6 goals while his brother Myles kicked one with 4 clearances. Liam Frazer found plenty of it as well for the Sharks with 11 inside 50 entries.
Match Day Recaps Chelsea proved that last week’s performance was no fluke, by toppling Somerville to the tune of 21 points. Somerville led by 19 points at the long break but elite defensive work kept the Eagles to just 1 point for the 3rd. The effort was rewarded as they kicked 5 goals in the last to complete a memorable turnaround. Todd Gardiner was the best for the Gulls kicking 5 goals from the midfield, While Shaun Foster is finally getting recognition in our Premier Data statistics with 33 touches and a goal. Ryan Gillis was kept quiet and did not kick a major, while Luke Burton was solid kicking 4 goals. Travis Bravo was named best for the Eagles with a solid midfield performance. Saturday’s Match of the day brought GameFace to Alexandra Park where the undefeated Rye faced Mornington. The first quarter seemed to be a blur for the Demons, as Mornington used their home ground advantage well, effortlessly transitioning through to their forwards as they took a 25 point lead into the first break. The second quarter seemed to bring more of the same as the Demons always seemed just a step behind. And by the start of the last quarter the game was out of reach, already nearly a 50 point buffer.
DIV 2
Rye were able to score a couple of goals late, but the final margin was still 47 points. Jackson Calder was unstoppable kicking 7 goals, but it could have easily been more if not for some inaccuracy, kicking 5 behinds as well. Adrian Speedy was also finding plenty of the ball while Nathan Heath was named best with 28 touches and 5 tackles.
A high scoring affair at Tractor Park occurred this week with Karingal walking away with the Points over Pearcedale.
Michael McGowan was solid for Rye against his old side and won the hit out battle and Kalani Ryan put in a good performance with 21 touches and a goal.
Luke Daniel kicked 6 goals spending time up the ground and through the middle, while Cruiz West was named best with 27 touches and 5 one percenters.
Tyabb are now winless through 5 games after Devon Meadows won by 48 points.
However one player has stolen the show, with Karingal’s Tom Curren becoming not only the first player this year to rack up 50 touches, with 54 for the fame, but also to reach 200 ranking points, in a very dominant performance.
In another game where the winning team will rue their accuracy, the Panthers could only manage 11 goals from their effort, and were inaccurate with 18 behinds, but in response Tyabb could only manage 5 goals for the match, and so questions will need to be asked as to how their season can be turned around. Ethan Rahilly continues to be strong with another 35 touches and a goal for the Yabbies, while Zach Caccivello was battled manfully for 22 touches and a goal. For Devon Meadows Rory Hillis was named best on, and Lachie Batten kicked 2 goals.
The Bulls held early ascendancy being 32 points in front at half time, and reached the ton by the third, but the Dales made a late push to only fall by 22 points.
Langwarrin stand alone now at the top of the Division 2 ladder after their dismantling of Hastings. The Blues were just 20 points down before they were held to just two more for the match, However, the Roo’s found no issue scoring as they piled on 11 goals in the same period to walk out 84 point victors. Andrewartha was quiet for his standards but went at 96% efficiency, while Jake Dormer and Mitch Mathie kicked 4 goals each. Young star Clayton Gay was named as the best for Hastings with 24 touches and two goals.

ROUND 4 PREVIEW What a fantastic competition we have in first division of the MPNFL and this weekend we have three matches in round five, which have the potential to have a big bearing on the composition of the top five, and maybe without putting the horse too far in front of the cart, who makes it to the big dance in September. Try these three contests on for size. Sorrento hosting Bombeach, Frankston YCW meets Dromana and the Frankston Bombers travel to Olympic Park to play the injury ravaged Rosebud. If you picked one side in these clashes and the other one, you would not bat an eyelid, that’s how even the match ups are. In no particular order regarding top billing let’s start delving into these games with a fine tooth comb. Sorrento hosts Bonbeach. This pits probably the two most talented sides in first Division against each other, although Sorrento’s victories have been against the bottom two sides, Pines and Edithvale/Aspendale, but they got close to beating the vastly improved young Mt Eliza last week. It was a thrilling game and Sorrento led deep into time-on before a late Redlegs goal snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. Leigh Poholke returned for Sorrento and Booted six, but hurt his calf again in the dying stages and will miss some more football. They still have a long injury list, but are starting to get a few back. They need a big scalp and arguably the biggest of them all is Bonbeach, who fought back well after being beaten by Dromana in round 3 to end the impressive unbeaten run of Rosebud by completely outplaying them.
It will be mouth watering this game when you consider the talent on the field. 6 ex AFL players in total lining up, depending on the fitness of Sorrento Coach, Luke Tapscott and hopefully Bonbeach”s David Armitage and Mitch Hallihan of Sorrento can go head to head as the two big bulls in the middle of the ground determined to win first use for their team.
Price has been working on a new game plan, which involves more run and gun and it’s starting to pay dividends. Billy Guerts in the ruck continues his outstanding form along with brother, Sam and they were among 11 goal kickers last week indicating the team work and spirit that has epitomised Dromana since 2018.
Sam Gilbert hit his straps last week for Bonbeach and Myles Poholke is also starting to find his best form for Sorrento and wouldn’t that be a great one on one battle as well?
Eathan Johnstone’s goal sense is so important to the Tigers and he has booted nine goals in the past two weeks, but this week comes up against the most organized backline in the league in Frankston YCW.
Trent Dennis-Lane has 17 goals in three games and with Bonbeach having such a deep and talented midfield to support Gilbert and Armitage in Gill-Renouf, Gent, McDonald and Jackson Casey. Who coach, Adrian Connolly might use as a tagger on Mitch Hallihan, Dennis-Lane should get plenty of opportunities, although James and Luke Brigden along with Jye Lloyd are fine defenders for Sorrento and will no doubt keep the Bonbeach forwards honest. The loss of Leigh Poholke is massive and Sorrento will obviously miss him and with Bonbeach’s deep midfield despite the game being on the bigger Dave McFarlane Reserve at Sorrento, Bonbeach should be too strong taking Sorrento to a precarious 2 win 3 loss record after five rounds. The reigning premiers Dromana are coming. After dropping their opening two games including the Good Friday clash to Red Hill by one point, the Tigers are back on track, out muscling Bonbeach and then thrashing Pines. Matt Price has taken over from club legend and dual premiership coach, Rikki Johnson in one of the most seamless coaching transitions ever seen indicating how much on the same page everyone involved at Dromana is.
BROUGHT TO YOU BY
They are a team within a team, with everyone working well together. Any of the defenders, whether it be Byron Barry, Kevin Lilac, McKenna Hura or Matt Briggs, could get the job on Johnstone and restrict his influence. The midfield battle will be pivotal with Sam Guerts and Billy Quigley along with Terry Wheeler and Josh Bateman taking on the Stonecats big experienced bodies such as Blake Mullane, Lachlan Wallace, Kyle Hutchinson and Luca Goonan, if he is not representing Casey Demons, which on form he should be. Matt La Fontaine has been playing forward so expect Daniel Marchesani to get the lock down job on him for Dromana. The Stonecats have two strong key forwards in Josh Butland, who kicked seven goals last week against Edithvale/Aspendale and Matt Troutbeck and if they don’t take marks in the Forward line they bring the ball to ground, which will keep the tigers' defence on their toes. The ruck duel involving Billy Guerts and Bailey Schmidt could also have a big bearing on the result, but although it will be close, the Stonecats seem to have more options up forward and experience to get the points.
ROUND 4 PREVIEW The third game in contention for match of the day has Rosebud at home to Frankston Bombers. After a poor showing in round one the Bombers have been getting better and last week were too good for Red Hill, winning by 29 points, but really the margin should have been far greater as the Bombers were woefully inaccurate kicking 9 goals 21. However, with all the talent they have in their side they are getting their game together and it helps that they have a powerful ruck combination of Harry Prior and Khan Haretuku, who shared a staggering 78 hitouts last week. They will come up against the emerging Cummings Twins, Steve and Matt, who are developing nicely, but Shaun Downie unfortunately for Rosebud is sidelined for a few weeks with a hamstring injury and their tough midfield, which until last week had been magnificent in quelling opposition sides in the first three rounds has also lost hard nut, Jai Hardwick with an adductor strain. To add insult to injury in the big loss at the hands of Bonbeach last week, the Buds’ will also be without key defender, Jari Kennedy, another Hamstring victim and veteran Greg Bentley who has also suffered a hamstring injury. That will test the depth of this young side with more responsibility resting on the shoulders of gun recruit, Nick Batsanis and Fletcher Hustwaite as they take on the experience and skill of Brett Sutton, Alex Harnett and Sam Fox, who should spend time forward and be opposed to hard- nosed small defender, Seb Krumeich. Haretuku and Prior will change up forward and that will keep lock down key defender Jack Mcrae busy. Where Keegan Downie plays will also be interesting for Rosebud and their aspirations in this match. He can be a mobile forward, so Ryan Marks-Logan with his mobility would be a good opponent for him, but with his brother and Greg Bentley out, he may be required to play midfield as well.
This match has potentially many outstanding one on one matchups and it promises to be a tremendous contest and one of those old fashioned 8 point games. This is massive for the Bombers and with Rosebud’s growing injury list especially to experienced players that might tip the scales in Frankston’s favour. Red Hill was disappointing last week, particularly in the first half and was lucky the Bombers kicked so badly that a five goal loss did not turn into a ten goal drubbing. They were without star defender, Jonah Siversen, who is so important to the Hillmen’s structure and from early in the game, their other impressive key defender, Daniel Frampton. They will be keen to rebound when they take on an injury depleted Pines, who is especially bereft of their experienced stars in Beau Hendry, Troy Jacobson and John Haidon, who are all sidelined indefinitely at the moment. The youngsters are giving it everything, but as is the case with inexperienced young players, they are prone to fluctuations in form, yet 16 year old excitement machine, Ned Moodie has been terrific in every match so far for the Pythons and his inclusion along with the other teenagers, Paddy Swayn has introduced have provided plenty of vim and vigour for the Pines and the future looks good. However, considering they are missing so many senior players and Red Hill have many more hardened bodies, it’s tough to see the Pines opening their account against Red Hill, who rarely under Jamie Mollo play two bad games in a row.
Mt Eliza has so many young players, but they play with selfbelief and a never say die attitude, which came to the fore when they snuck over the line last week against Sorrento and Hung on for a draw against a strong Frankston YCW in round 2. They now have the chance to gain a percentage booster against cellar dweller, Edithvale/Aspendale. The Eagles have had a tough start to the season, but when you look at their playing list, they still contain plenty of experience headed by the indefatigable inside midfielder, Steve Mannix, Mick Meehan, who had his best game of the year last week with 4 goals and veterans, Sam Monaghan and Shayne Allan, who combined for five goals. Throw in star forward, Michael Bussey, who hasn’t hit top form yet, reliable defender, Mark Mullins and Bradley Tagg, the Eagles are well served with players, who have played plenty of footy and at a high level for a long time. Their midfield lacks depth though and despite Mt Eliza’s youth that is one of the Redlegs' strengths headed by ex AFL Ruckman, Lewis Pierce, who has been able to give the prolific Bailey Breen first use of the Footy and he has been getting fine support from Braden Nelmes, potential AFL draftee Will Bravo and Tom Small among a host of others. Steve Brattle has done a great job as coach with Mt Eliza in a short space of time and although Edithvale/Aspendale is a proud club, the Redlegs seem to have too

There is still plenty of football to be played in the second division of the MPNFL, but after five rounds perennial stragglers Devon Meadows in the top five. And it is very nice to see. They have three victories for the year, over fellow long time battlers in Crib Point, Tyabb and Pearcedale, and it is fair to say the Panthers would have been favourites to win all of these matches. However, they just lost to Mornington by one point on Anzac Day and the Bulldogs are in the top three at the moment with just one loss. Devon have certainly improved, but how much looks set to be determined when they take on an injury hit Hastings, who have 2 wins, but generally have been competitive under new coach, Clint Einsedel. They have blooded some youngsters this year, but keep losing experienced campaigners to long term injuries including Ben King (ankle) and veteran full back and 2016 Premiership player, Terry Green for the season due it a likely triple whammy knee injury, a damaged medial, MCL and ACL, potentially career ending. The Blues were good for the first half against Langwarrin last week, but were blown away in the second and although the Roos were too good in the end, Hastings had no fit players left on the bench by half time, and proceeded to run out of legs quickly.
Devon Meadows got the job done against Tyabb and will welcome back marquee player Brett Delidio for his second game with the club. Devon coach Neil Craig says there have been good signs from his side in all five matches, but was frustrated with the poor kicking for goal on the weekend. The Panthers also have a tough draw, but acknowledge that to make the finals, they have to win many games this year where they will be underdogs. It starts this week against Hastings, but at home and with a healthier playing list, Devon might be able to make it 4 wins from six and make the top five feel a bit more like home. Tom Curran, the former St Kilda player has been a boom recruit for Karingal this year accumulating possessions at will and on the weekend took that to another level gathering an unbelievable 54 touches and according to Premier Data 205 ranking points. His slashing display was the main driving force in the Bulls registering their second win of the season and they will be looking to make it two on the trot when they meet Crib Point. The Magpies over the past fortnight have been really competitive and in their games up to half time, before being eclipsed in the second half to see the margin blow out. They are relying on many young players as their injury list continues to grow, which a club that lacks depth and is still developing can ill afford. The Key for Steve Hamill’s side this week is to put together four quarters, but how do they stop Curran? Matt Blair in the ruck has also been superb for the bulls and to stay in the tight finals race they will be targeting a big percentage booster. Pearcedale will start as firm favourites for the first time in years when they travel to Tyabb, who have been off the mark all season, after promising plenty in the pre-season. Ethan Rahilly has been playing a lone hand for the yabbies’ averaging more than 30 disposals a game, but has lacked support. Pearcedale will be without a number of key players for at least a month including their captain, David Hussey and vicecaptain, Jacob Ostrom, who both have knee injuries.
However, their young players have really stepped up led by crafty forwards, Luke Daniels and Cruz West along with big numbers on the track at training, ranging between 55 and 60 ensuring the club is developing nicely. Another way for Pearcedale to keep progressing in the right direction is to enter foreign territory and successfully navigate what is historically a danger match for any Developing team, but expect the Dales’ to get the win. Langwarrin is flying and this week their opponents are another team playing good footy as well in Chelsea. The Seagulls were poor in the opening three rounds, playing one good quarter to beat Crib Point and then being well beaten by Karingal and Pearcedale, who had not enjoyed a win since the opening round of 2019. The Tuesday night training session after that shock defeat at the hands of Pearcedale was expected to be a grueling training session, but playing coach James Brain opted to change it around and go to the pub instead for a bonding session. It seems to have worked as the Seagulls have found their mojo over the past fortnight upsetting premiership contenders, Seaford and Somerville. The good news for Chelsea is that attacking half back flanker, Zane Carter, who is averaging more than 30 touches a game, Shaun Foster and Curtis Bywater got badly needed support from the many other talented footballers Chelsea have.
Including reliable tall defender Simon Mitchellhill, James Brain himself and the 2019 second division League Best and Fairest, Todd Gardiner beginning to get back to some of his best form. The Kangaroos though have more talent overall and when they have had to up the ante in matches to get the result they desire they have managed to change gears seamlessly except for the Karingal Game, where wasteful kicking cost them badly. Zac Anrewartha didn’t dominate like past matches on the weekend but he still picked up 26 disposals at a very high efficiency rate, and as usual received great support from a host of team mates including Blake Peach, Nick Tuddenham , Chad Mulvogue, Josh Dormer and of course prized recruit, Mark Baguley. And that’s just touching the surface of the deep talent pool Langwarrin have. There’s no doubt Chelsea when in form poses a threat, but the Kangaroos seem too strong and should remain undefeated after a third of the season has been played.
ROUND 5 PREVIEW Rye received a reality check last week suffering their first loss being unable to cope with Mornington’s outstanding outside run and exquisite ball delivery into their forward line. The Demons had won the opening four rounds of the season on the back of their ability to win the contested ball, but the Bulldogs turned it into an uncontested encounter and the Demons, in warm conditions did not have the talent or work rate to go with them. Rye gets the chance to redeem themselves this week when they play the inconsistent Seaford, who early in the season is giving the impression of being a team we don’t know what to expect from week to week. The Tigers have loads of experience and enough talent to produce football good enough to not only play finals, but be a premiership contender. However, their performances against Langwarrin and Chelsea show they can also be a fair way off the pace. Aaron Walton, their star goal kicker will need to be closed down by Rye, who will be hoping playing coach Adam Kirkwood got plenty out of his first run for the season, they also need to see more from chief playmaker, Matt Hill. Seaford on the other hand is getting plenty every week from 2 of their star key on ballers, Collingwood recruit Tim Broomhead and Ishak Bashir. With both teams in the top 5, this deserves second division match of the day billing, but can Rye rise to the occasion to prove themselves worthy finals participants? It’s a line ball decision and maybe even a toss of the coin, so Seaford by a whisker.
Another crucial match could be season defining for a side seen as definitely one of the favourites to be competing for the ultimate prize in second division at Skybus Stadium on the last day of the season; Somerville. The Eagles have had an indifferent start to the season winning just twice, but have been severely hamstrung by injuries to key players particularly their two big inside midfielders, Rohan Hogenbirk, who is out at this stage until late in the season and Paul Fermanis, who should be right to return for the second half of the year. Their best tagger, Josh Westerman has already done some sterling stopping jobs on opposition key playmakers, specifically Langwarrin’s Mark Baguley, is also absent for a few weeks with a shoulder ailment and 2019 Best and fairest, Nick Mason is out as well. Any side that loses players of that calibre will struggle to replace them and that is what is happening with the Eagles, who hope to get their best outside mid, Patty Nagel back from illness this week. That will help as their opponents this week are Mornington, who were fantastic as mentioned earlier in easily beating Rye in round 5. The Bulldogs are a great running and uncontested ball team that uses the footy well with Nathan Heath and Jake Smart particularly brilliant last week along with Lachlan Susovich, who cut off many of Rye’s forward thrusts. Somerville rely on Ryan Gillis to kick a large portion of their goals and Susovich will be required to support the bulldogs’ shut down defenders, Josh Harrington and Jai Richardson. The Eagles will also need to restrict the amount of clean ball that goes inside Mornington’s forward 50, otherwise leading goal kicker Jackson Calder will kick another bag.
Although reliable defender, Luke Egan should get the job on him and that will be an integral one on one battle that could decide the match. 2 wins and 4 losses looks perilous for Somerville, but it’s not forlorn as their playing stocks should be bolstered in the second half and like 2019 they can again make a decent and successful run at the finals. Due to their injury plight, I think the Eagles will struggle to beat the Dogs and remain at 2 victories allowing Mornington to continue to set up their season.
