ELECTRICAL SWITCHBOARD SOLUTIONS

This week is national volunteer week, and Riley Lockett caught up with Joey Capp, a mainstay of the Bonbeach Sharks... “It keeps me involved with the club, and the players love it. It’s all worth it, seeing them around the club and them coming up and saying g’day to me,” Cappy said. “Sometimes I think it’s the only thing that gets the younger blokes down to the club, a free feed on a Tuesday!” Cappy says chuckling. Joey Capp, or better known by the Sharks faithful as ‘Cappy’, has been a mainstay of the Bonbeach Sharks Football Netball Club his entire life. Formed in 1962 when Cappy was just 12 years old, the Bonbeach Sharks joined the Nepean Football Leagues, and as he puts it, he remembers looking up to and admiring the senior players, watching them play home or away every Saturday. Cappy says he actually remembers the first game the Sharks ever played, “We played at home, against Rosebud, We had to use tents as the change rooms, as nothing had been built yet!” Today, at 71 years young, life member of the club, Cappy can be found still supporting the Sharks in the MPNFL, whether that be at their home ground of Shark Park, or whether that be travelling upwards of an hour down the Peninsula to watch them play against the likes of Sorrento or even still, current rival Rosebud. But on a Tuesday night, while the players are training, Cappy can be found in the canteen at Shark Park, with the role of ‘head chef’, preparing a different soup for the football and netball players to enjoy each and every Tuesday. This week was a hearty Steak and Mushroom soup.

Himself, and another volunteer and Bonbeach life member in Peter Hogan, who can still be found in the timekeepers box on a Saturday, went to work to try and recruit as many junior kids to the club as possible. “It was a difficult time for the club, I didn’t think we’d get through it, but we just went out and tried to get as many young guys down the club as possible, to try and build something,” Cappy said. Bonbeach still haven’t won a flag, since their last in 1984. “Being a smaller club, not as financially well off, we have struggled a little in the past, compared to your bigger clubs like Mt Eliza or Frankston,” Cappy said.

Cappy has done it all at Bonbeach in his time, He played in the first ever premiership for the club in 1979. “That flag is still one of the best memories of my life, especially it being the first flag we won,” Cappy said. Bonbeach went on to win the 1982 and 1984 premierships as well, this time Cappy watched on as a spectator. Cappy moved into volunteering for the club shortly after he finished playing, coaching the reserves side for a number of years, and taking them to the grand final twice, something else he’s very proud of. He then moved into, what he liked to call it, an everyman role. He would work the gate, letting spectators into the grounds, he would paint the lines onto the ground, he would work behind the bar, anything that the club needed. Cappy also helped out where he could when his son Steve Capp took over the senior coaching position in 2011, who also managed to coach Bonbeach to two more grand finals, but with no wins. But one of Cappy’s proudest achievements was around 1980, when he said the club was on its knees, and as he put it, he thought they’d never be able to recover, and that they’d have to fold.

He continued, “But any player that does come here, the first thing they say is ‘I don’t know why I didn’t come here sooner’, We’ve got a great community here, everybody is welcomed.” “You have a lot of people here who just love the club, and you find, when you’re going well, everybody is here to help, but it’s when the side is struggling, it’s harder to find helping hands”. To anyone looking to volunteer at their local club, Cappy has one word of advice, “Just give it a go, I think people find they love doing it more than they’ll ever realise”. Cappy still has a taste for more success at Bonbeach however, stating he needs to see another premiership before he’s done, and with Bonbeach playing off in a preliminary final loss in 2019, and sitting pretty in second on the ladder in 2021, it might be closer than he thinks. But for now, Cappy is more than happy spending his time in the canteen, seeing the smiles on players' faces when they come off the track on a Tuesday.

ROSEBUD TAKE ON BONBEACH IN MATCH OF THE DAY For the second time this season, Bonbeach found Dromana a very tough opposition. The Tigers beat the Sharks early in the season and in round 12 last week got within three points of winning again. Bonbeach was without star forward, Trent Dennis-Lane and again looked a bit lost in tough conditions up forward only kicking six goals, but full credit to their defence in restricting the Tigers to also six goals and without producing their best form, Bonbeach found a way to get those valuable four points, while at the same time putting Dromana a game and hefty percentage outside the top five. Sam Gilbert continues to star, while the defenders led by unsung duo, Sean Corrigan and Matthew Douglas do a great job week in and week out and not all the midfielders can play well all week, but there are so many options to step in and take up the slack, with Lachie Verma one of the best on the weekend. Rosebud is Bonbeach’s opponent this week and returned to some of their blistering form in the opening three weeks of the season in thrashing Pines.

They kicked 15 goals to 4 including seven in the last term to earn a badly required percentage booster with Jai Nanscawen producing a brilliant display slotting five goals and veteran Greg Bentley 4 before the Hamstring curse hit the exAFL player for the second time this year. Nanscawen has 18 goals for the season now and may be opposed by the reliable Douglas this week, which should be one of the one on one highlights of this crucial contest. If Rosebud can bring the intensity and Incessant pressure, the hallmarks of their victories so far this year, they will push the Sharks, but once again the depth of talent of the Sharks should be enough to get them over the line.

Rosebud will also be hosting their Presidents Luncheon this weekend, with star studded lineup of guest speakers, with Tony Jewell, Bernie Quinlan, Mal Brown and Don Scott headlining what should be an excellent day at Olympic Park. And GameFace will be covering all the action from the seniors LIVE from 2PM as these two sides face off in a must watch game.

ROUND 4 PREVIEW We all know the saying: “A week can be a long time in Footy”, and that is certainly the case after Frankston YCW dropped their first game of the season last week to Frankston Bombers, who are now just half a game behind third placed Mt Eliza, who are also two points off the pace from Bonbeach, who have moved to second. The Bombers with all their talent produced their best performance of the season and managed to kick 14 goals against that formidable YCW backline with the multi faceted forward set up all finally firing together. Corey Buchan, Jarrad Grant and Khan Haretuku booted 2 goals apiece and the Bombers’ midfield eclipsed the Stonecats’ onball brigade, which is no mean feat. The Bombers meet Red Hill this week as they aim to stay in touch with the top 3 or if results go their way catapult Bonbeach or Mt Eliza into that coveted position. Red Hill pushed Mt Eliza, losing by 14 points in a gruelling affair and although the Hillmen are not getting enough positive results in recent weeks, they are a tricky opposition at home on the mountain. Dan Frampton continues to perform well for Sandringham in the VFL and as a fine key defender will be missed by Red Hill considering the tall options that exist in the Bombers forward Line. Jonah Siversen should get one of the Resting ruckmen in Haretuku or Harry Prior, but who tries to curb the influence of other tall forwards in Buchan and Grant and even Beau Muston? That appears to be one of Red Hill’s achilles heels along with lacking tall forwards. Jamie Mollo’s team will scrap hard at home as they always do, but the Bombers finally seemed primed after their victory over YCW to make an assault on the flag and should be too strong.

Mt Eliza again got the job done without dominating the opposition in beating Red Hill by 14 points and this weekend meet Sorrento, who they beat in the first half of the season with virtually the last kick of the match. Sorrento kept their finals chances alive while at the same time probably put beyond doubt any chance of being relegated in 2022, by hanging on over cellar dweller, Edithvale-Aspendale by just 2 points. A win is a win, but the sharks are a long way from their best and were 18 points behind at half time after being kept goal less in the second term. They found a way to win, but once again had to manufacture their goals with interim coach Leigh Poholke sidelined with injury through James Hallihan, Shannon Gladman and Matthew Doherty kicking 2 each. With many key players out, they continue to blood young players which augurs well for Sorrento’s future and with the Redlegs young group, it will be fascinating to see these two young sides go toe to toe. Considering the thriller earlier in the season, there’s a good chance this will also go right down to the wire, with Mt Eliza lacking specialist goal scorers and key forwards and also needing a plethora of options to hit the scoreboard. Sorrento is still eyeing off a finals berth and their effort last week wasn’t impressive, but they might rise to the occasion this week and knock off the Redlegs in another nail biter. When you are a very young side and that is Pines at the moment, you are going to have tough days at the office as young teams are prone to inconsistency even if the effort is always there. After beating Sorrento, which was a win full of merit, the Pythons were badly beaten by Rosebud and hardly fired a shot.

ROUND 4 PREVIEW It was arguably their worst performance of the season and will no doubt be attempting to turn it around on the weekend to ensure they remain at least a game ahead of Edithvale/Aspendale in the battle to avoid relegation. They play Dromana, who are still in the finals hunt, but may rue the narrow loss to Bonbeach on the weekend as the game that costs them a chance to extend their season. The Tigers’ best is pretty good headed by star ruck, Billy Guerts, but outside Ethan Johnstone kicking goals is an issue. There also continues to be a reliance on Johnstone, Billy Guerts, his brother Sam and Billy Quigley playing good footy every week and fortunately they do. Luke Dalmau played his third game of the season for the Pythons and is vital in their quest to win the midfield battle and with Nick Boswell retiring after a stellar career, they need two of Guy Hendry, one as a tall forward and the other as a tall defender to assert his usual influence at both ends of the ground. The two teams have plenty to play for, but Dromana has more talent and more experience and deserve to start as favourites. Edithvale/Aspendale, after pushing Sorrento all the way, but not getting the points, now take on Frankston YCW on the rebound after their first loss of the season. The Bombers found a way to slice their way through the Stonecats’ vault, their strong defence and score 94 points and although they are outright bottom, the Eagles with their experienced forwards like Michael Bussey, Mick Meehan, Shayne Allan and Tom Rourke are capable of kicking plenty of goals.

The problem has been that this quartet hasn’t fired together and Bussey in particular, who when on song is one of the best forwards in the League has struggled for most of the season. Some of Edi-Asp’s younger players like Charlie Martello and Reece Orchard have been in good form and the veteran, Sam Monaghan is having a good year. The Stonecats forward line did not fire last week and have some injury concerns with key forward Matt Troutbeck out for several weeks and Luke Paynter, who can play as a tall forward, having more injury woes. They are also missing one of their stars, Matt La Fontaine, who is out for the rest of the season due to his work commitments in WA. Despite last week’s loss and the growing injury list, YCW will still have too much firepower for the Eagles especially if that strong midfield trio of Kyle Hutchinson, Blake Mullane and Luca Goonan all combine well together. The backline also will be determined to improve from last week and they will help YCW record a good win and remain on top.

THE CROWD PICKS ITS FAVOURITE BIG WIN FROM THE WEEK in the GameFace MPNFL Facebook group we asked the fans a simple question with a tough answer; What was your favourite win last weekend. There was Rye, completing their season sweep of Somerville with a shock, hard fought win, where they led all day at home to bring themselves right back into the finals race. Then there was Tyabb, who got their first win of the season, holding the Dales goalless after half time at Tractor Park, in what was a great team effort, and we can guess a very big night back at the clubrooms. And Finally there was the mighty Bombers, who in the return match of the Frankston Derby recorded a solid win over the Stonecats, ending their hopes of a perfect season.

And so here in the record, thanks to The Corner Bottleshop Rosebud, we can reveal the results of this poll. There were 198 responses to the poll, and in third place was the Bombers win over the Stonecats receiving 56 votes, no doubt from the Bomber faithful. Then in second; Rye toppling the Eagles, who were riding high after defeating ladder leading Langwarrin, received 61 votes. And so the mighty Yabbies, in their first win of the season, at Tractor Park against Pearcedale, took out the top spot, with an impressive 81 votes for the victory.

BULLDOGS BARKING LOUDLY Mornington is the most in-form team in the second division, winning five in a row to be a game clear in second position on the ladder. Simon Goosey’s side is playing excellent footy as many of it’s best players are performing to their optimum level especially gun full forward, Jackson Calder, who has kicked 59 goals and is proving to be more than a handful for opposition defenders. The Bulldogs midfield has been strengthened with the recruitment of Perry Lewis-Smith and the outstandingly consistent performances of Adrian Speedy coupled with excellent ball users off half back in Jake Smart and Nathan Heath along with Kalen Bird and Lachie Susovich. The return of James Cameron, who has kicked 11 goals in three games has added potency to the forward line and Warwick Miller, when fit and available, can play as a tall down back or in attack. If there are any weaknesses for the Dogs, it might be a quality experienced ruck, but it’s not adversely affecting them at the moment and at least one regular tall defender. However, they are coping with smaller sized players performing those roles as well. They travel to meet Karingal this week and on form should win easily. They have too much depth for the Bulls, who have battled manfully this year, but struggled to match it against the better sides. Tom Curran has been a revelation with his ball gathering skills, while Sam Glenn has played well every week and Lachie Hinde continues to enhance his reputation as a fine run with player and should be opposed to either Lewis-Smith or Speedy on the weekend, but the Bulldogs are in premiership contention mode and will extend their unbeaten run to six.

RYE SAYS IT OK NOT TO BE OK Rye can stay in the finals race by accounting for Tyabb, who opened their account this year, with a great win over Pearcedale, which included keeping the Dales goalless in the second half. They were focused and played with intensity all day, the yabbies and all players played their part instead of relying on Ethan Rahilly and Brad Harbinson to lead the way each week. Their disposal efficiency also improved dramatically from 37 percent to 63 and the Demons would certainly not want to take the Yabbies lightly. It’s a big day for Rye as they highlight the it’s okay not to be Okay cause after losing a current player and official to suicide over the past 12 months. The Demons are determined to raise lots of money for this foundation, which is very close to their heart so it will be an emotional day at RJ Rowley Reserve. In regard to the on-field performance, the club will be hoping it does not have a negative effect on the players in stopping them from playing to the required level to win the game. Rye’s percentage is under 90, but they have six wins, so they require a percentage booster. Matt Hill and Nick Strickland are in career best form and the Demons are hoping playing coach Adam Kirkwood returns from another soft tissue injury.

There is no doubt Rye has more talent and depth than the Yabbies, but maybe Tyabb’s win has given them the self-confidence to end a dirty season on a good note. However, It’s a massive day both on and off the field for Rye and with the finals dream still well and truly alive and coming off a stirring win over Somerville, the Demons should salute.

ROUND 5 PREVIEW Devon Meadows were impressive last week against Chelsea and the only negative was not getting a big percentage boost, when they had the Gulls at their mercy, leading by nearly 8 goals, before Chelsea kicked the last 4 goals in junk time. The Panthers’ percentage is under 100 and well behind both Somerville and the Seagulls, but looking at the situation three quarters full, Devon is a game ahead of the Eagles and six points clear of the out-of-form Chelsea. They are also a game in front of Rye, but 10 percent ahead of the Demons, so if they keep winning, the percentage won’t become an issue. Devon was great on the weekend producing yet another collective team effort with few stars, highlighted by 10 goal kickers sharing in 13 goals, a hard working midfield providing enormous pressure and an unsung, but reliable defence led by Leigh Craig, Michael D’Agostino and Liam Drew, who set up so much play off half back. Brodie McConnell continues to play his role and so was Pat Boland until he broke his hand, which has put him out for the season. Lachie Batten also won’t play again in 2021 due to a PCL knee injury, but the Panthers might have found a ready-made replacement in Hayden Murphy, who has kicked five goals in two games. Joel Hillis is the touch of class that turns it on in the midfield at will and his brother Rory along with Aaron Johns do all the hard work at the coal face.

This week they are at home again, which is starting to become a fortress and they host Pearcedale, who had their worst game of a promising season last weekend, losing to Tyabb. The Panthers’ coach, Justin Kennedy conceded his team, who have been so competitive in every match were off the pace, but was full of credit for the Yabbies and added there were no excuses. Peracedale’s best is pretty good and they have a good forward line led by Luke Daniel, who is likely to have as his opponent either Leigh Craig or D’Agostino, which should be an absorbing contest. Jake Frawley, Kyle Van Der Pluym, Connor Benwell and Cruiz West have performed consistently well all season as their leading players, but a complete team effort, which has epitomised the club’s improvement, seemed to be missing against Tyabb. That must return when they play Devon, although even if it does, Neil Craig’s team, who will have a new coach next season have too much to play for to let this one slip and are certainly a better unit than the emerging Pearcedale. The match of the round at Seaford will be at RF Miles Reserve, where the Tigers host league leader Langwarrin, who recovered from their loss to Somerville to outplay Karingal. The Tigers are expected to get back key midfielder Ishak Bashir and playing coach Zac Vansittart along with Roarke Fischer, who both missed last week because of concussion.

The Roos though are likely to welcome back star midfielder Tim McGuinness from a long term knee injury, which has sidelined him all season. That will obviously make this powerful Langwarrin lineup even stronger if that is even possible. With the new pavilion and the picturesque amphitheatre that is RF Miles plus the excellent crowd support the two sides enjoy, this match should provide a finals-like atmosphere. Seaford failed their first test at their renovated new home a fortnight ago, being well beaten by Mornington, so will be keen to perform better on Saturday. The Tigers have a plethora of forward options and added another one last week with veteran midfielder Damian Rayson playing there against Crib Point and dominating with seven goals. Tim Broomhead must be one of the favourites to win the League medal as his output is of a high standard every match. The forward line will test the Langwarrin back half, but it has stood up to most challenges and has a great array of talent in their forward line as well. The battle of the two midfields should also be fascinating and it would be great to see Broomhead and the prolific Zac Andrewartha going head to head. They could get around 80 disposals between them. Seaford’s best is very good, but Langwarrin’s is better and this should be a wonderful contest in front of a great crowd with the Roos’ taking the points.

ROUND 5 PREVIEW

Somerville have had a weird and at times a frustrating three weeks since the competition resumed after the enforced covid lockdown. They were thrashed by Seaford, inflicted Langwarrin’s first loss of the season and then last week for the second time this season went down to Rye, who had tasted victory just once in their past six outings and that was an unimpressive 8 point triumph over Crib Point. The Eagles were behind all day and have found it hard when starting a bit tardy to regain their momentum and get on top of teams. In the Langwarrin game, they were switched on all day. The Eagles this week face another danger, Banana Peel type game when they clash with Hastings, who must win to keep alive flagging finals hopes. If the Blues do get the result they crave, they will join the Eagles on six wins, but Somerville can jump 8 points clear if they get the job done. Lachie Williams is set to return this week for the Eagles to add some badly needed experience to the midfield. Somerville’s ball use efficiency also let them down last week and no doubt they will be working hard to address that this week. Hastings always get good performances from their best players like Paul Rogasch, Tom Backman, Jake Hewitt and Nathan Gray along with Ben King, but need a more even spread of contributors to secure a big scalp like the eagles. The inconsistency of Somerville has plagued them all year, but their best is pretty good as we saw when they beat Langwarrin. If they produce that form against Hastings they will win.

Chelsea was poor again last week highlighting the discrepancy between their best and worst. They left the display against Devon Meadows to too few and were particularly poor into the wind in the first and third quarters. Shaun Foster had 40 disposals and was superb and another veteran, David Barton accumulated 39, while Curtis Bywater made the most of limited opportunities with four goals. Their plan to tag team the Hills Brothers and restrict their influence with Lynden Vraca and Jai McGuinness, but that move floundered. They remain in the finals mix, only half a game and percentage in seventh behind Somerville and a win over Crib Point is an absolute must and if the Gulls turn up and play to their potential they will win comfortably, but that is the elephant in the room. In the words of Crib Point’s coach, Steve Hamill, last week was their worst performance of the season being belted by Seaford by 90 points. They kicked just one goal in the first half and finished with a woefully inaccurate 4 16 40, which has been an issue for the magpies all season. In most games they have taken it up to the opposition, so expect a big response this week as Hamill is a proud man and has instilled intensity and consistency of performance into his charges. They should be much better this week, but so should Chelsea as their season is on the line and the gulls have loads of experience and talent, too much for the magpies and that will be the difference provided Chelsea come to play and that is the million dollar question.
