THE BIRD SONG STORY

Birdsong books is a small independently owned bookstore located in Locust Grove Georgia. The “Vibe” of the place focuses on community building and an even larger mission of enlightenment through reading.

Jasmine Atkins is the owner and proprietor, who loves her work and mission and the history of Birdsong.

“Birdsong books was founded November 19th 2021.

The original owner of the bookstore was my mother.

One day she was in bed because she was sick. She had just had mouth surgery. And then something came to her. It was a vision and it was a bookstore. So she decided hey I am going to do my research and I am going to open up a bookstore. She texted me that night and she was like Jaz should I get a bookstore and I was like yeah I think that’s a perfect idea. So afterwards she came up with this idea and two months later the idea turned into an actual store.”

Birdsong books carries both new and used books, for anyone looking to expand their horizons or just spend a lazy day reading a good book. “80% of the store is used books and 20% of the store is new books. We started just going to garage sales and just collecting as many books as possible. People can have very rare books or books with a lot of value but they’ll sell it to you for like ten cents.”

Indeed as well as being a shrewd businesswoman Jasmine wanted to carry on her mother’s legacy by creating an environment that was as much a local business as it was a community gathering place.

“What’s special about Birdsong books is its family oriented. Most of the people who work here are my family members. When you come into Birdsong bookstore because we’re a small business you are able to actually create that connection with each person.

Some people come in just to talk. Some people come to lounge around and actually read the books because we do allow that. You know we have a good selection of books.”

MAINTAINING THE LEGACY I practiced outside by myself. I had a basketball goal so I would shoot for hours afterwards and also I would run afterwards. It just showed what kind of work ethic I had and I carried that same work ethic onto what I do now.” She continues “Its always been like a dream. My mother had me when she was very young. And her having me very young I [saw] go through college [for] her bachelor’s degree. I remember walking with her to classes.”

Jasmine is also aware of the power of the community seeing itself reflected in the books it reads. “When we go to places like Atlantic Station. We try to find books with a lot of black faces on it because we know that if a child sees themselves in a book then they are more inclined to read that book.”

Part of what makes Jasmine’s story both unique and identifiable is that she grew up a local basketball hero in Henry county. Indeed her journey to being a town centerpiece started years ago and step by step. “I am from Atlanta Georgia. I came down to the Henry county area when I was in 6th grade. I was a basketball player. That's what everybody knows me for around the county. I played at Eagles Landing middle school and high school.”

“In college I went vegan. After going Vegan it completely changed my life. I started working at a call center and I started teaching Veganism to children. So while I was teaching veganism to children and actually getting a grasp on public speaking. It helped me learn what I like to teach. Working in a call center taught me how to deal with people.”

She feels her life has led her to be the owner of Birdsong Books. “After my mother passed away, it was time for me to own the bookstore. It wasn’t hard because I was kind of preparing myself to be in this position.”

It is through sports, playing high level high school and college basketball she gained a work ethic that sticks with her to this day. “I was never the person who just practiced at practice or when I’m with my team.

Opportunities to Grab and Mistakes to Learn Benji Saunier is an entrepreneur and man of the community. As a local native of Henry County, one if his true passions is the love of sports and working with the youth. Benji states that "as a community, we have to do something to keep our kids out of trouble if I can offer my time to help kids grow into young men and women, I'm willing to comment to that." Teaching them to be a leader and not a follower is one of the first steps of growth and development while mentoring our youth in the early stages. He inspires the youth he serves that come from under privileged homes to strive to be better than the situation tbey were raiaed in without blaming others for less fortunate circumstances. As a youth growing up, his dream was to be better in every aspect of his life and provide his children with the resources to excel higher than his own personal dreams and achievements

Sauniers says "I just want the hidden valley park to grow! It's an old park that use to be pack with over 300 plus kids back in day per season." His vision is to see kids get back to being kids and not being wrap up in this digital world over consumed in technology with no interest in interactive outdoor youth activities. At the moment, his program offers baseball and softball but is looking to partner with other organizations and expand across South Metro ATL. Benji also has a Love for food and the reaction I see when people enjoy his food makes his day! Saunders' goal is to be able to work with kids to teach them a trade; providing them with the resources to be able to work and know how to do the job while creating values such as self worth and commitment to skill development.

DANNY NAGEL:CLAY CO FROM BIRTH TO DIRT written by Marvella Nesbitt

Personal Injury Attorney Daniel Nagel earns the moniker “King of Clay Co” because of his deep roots and pride in the county. He was born and raised in Clayton and has lived there for 39 years.

He and his wife still have strong family ties in the community. Nagel affectionately expresses an appreciation for the cultural diversity, differing food options, and businesses his hometown has to offer. He has never seen a need to reside anywhere else.

Before opening his firm as an accident lawyer, he started defending misdemeanor cases in Henry County. Shortly after, he served as a district attorney in Clayton County but admits, “I tried cases, worked appeals, and did everything I could potentially do, but it wasn’t the right place for me.” Ultimately, it was at a friend’s urging that he ventured into a different field of law to find his niche. Needless to say, he made the leap and has never looked back.

Nagel confides he always realized the trajectory of his career pathway. “I know it sounds cheesy, but I always knew I was going to be a lawyer.” The 1992 legal drama, A Few Good Men, starring Tom Cruise as a Navy attorney, was also influential in his decision.

Besides, Nagel says he did not have the aptitude to use a hammer and nails, so it did not leave him many options.

One attribute that sets Nagel apart from other personal injury attorneys is his social media presence. We have gone to a trade school just like a mechanic, plumber, or electrician. Jason and his wife Edrenzie Mckenzie had a vision. A Vision to expand! A vision to do more! A vision to grow the family business! On November 3rd, they will begin to celebrate and embrace a new journey as they prepare for the grand opening of Big Chic King. After spending countless hours behind the scenes and many late nights strategizing, they finally came up with a concept that allowed them to take their business model to the next level.

The Mckenzie's are no strangers to entrepreneurship and taking chances to get the results they are looking for. For years they have invested and made the moves necessary to get them where they are today! One of the most vital moves made was when they taught their children how to run the business and the process to run the business efficiently, growing into a family owned and operated business with multiple locations.

The city of McDonough welcomed them and supported the business with open arms drawing County wide attention on that good ole chicken hot and fresh out the kitchen.

Judge Ralph Bailey

Judge Ralph Bailey, Jr. is originally from Bowling Green, Kentucky. In December of 2021, he became the first African American male to serve full-time on the Henry County State Court bench. He started his legal career by serving on active military duty in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps as a JAG Officer from 2002 to 2006. Upon completion of his active military service, he continued serving in the military by joining the U.S. Army Reserves, where he currently holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and works as a Regional Defense Counsel.

Upon completing his active military service, Judge Bailey later served as an Assistant District Attorney in Fulton and Henry counties and as a Magistrate Judge in Henry County. He also has worked as an attorney with the Social Security Administration, in-house counsel for Allstate Insurance Company, and in private practice prior to his judicial appointment. Additionally, Judge Bailey worked as an adjunct professor at Mercer University and St. Leo University.

Judge Bailey has a Bachelor of Science degree in Police Administration from the University of Louisville, a Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Baltimore School of Law, and a Master of Business Administration degree from Mercer University School of Business.

Meet Judge Bailey

In addition to his daily state court responsibilities, Judge Bailey presides over the Henry County Domestic Violence Court and serves as a co-judge for the Henry County Veterans Treatment Court.

Judge Bailey also serves in the community as a board member for A Friend’s House (home for youth) and McIntosh Trail (mental health/disability centers) and is a member of the following organizations: Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Rho Sigma Lambda Chapter; American Legion, Post 516; Leadership Henry Class of 2023; Henry County Bar Association and the Lawyer’s Club of Atlanta.

I just kept treating people with dignity and respect. I kept striving and doing the best I could.”

His experience working simultaneously as a prosecutor and a defense attorney, gave him a collection of skills and abilities that prepared him to be a fairminded judge. He states, “It really helped me because I [could] see both sides of the table.” When he is in the courtroom, all can rest assured he upholds the belief that “justice is blind”. “I try to make sure [people] are treated fairly, regardless of what type of background they come from or who they are.”

“If someone would have told me I was going to be a lawyer or a judge, I would have [been in disbelief]. I just kept treating people with dignity and respect. I kept striving and doing the best I could.”

Although the State Court Judge has a remarkably busy schedule, he tries to keep his work-life balanced. He admits, “You can’t be all work and no play.” In his leisure time, he enjoys golfing, playing fantasy football, and spending time with his wife of 27 years and two adult daughters.

Lastly, Judge Bailey would like to advise young African American males to always be open to the vast possibilities that await and aim to be distinguished leaders. He remarks, “Work hard, and strive to be the president or the head of the group, continue to grind.” These are encouraging words from a man who has made an indelible mark upon his community and is an inspiration to all.

The Honorable Judge Bailey feels a strong benevolence towards the county’s veterans. As the co-judge for the Veterans Treatment Court, he has a deep understanding and passion for the social and legal issues affecting vets. He will be this year’s keynote speaker at Henry County’s Veterans Day Ceremony on Saturday, November 11th. Judge Bailey will be thanking vets for their sacrifices for serving our country, and his speech will highlight the true meaning of service and its everlasting benefits. He reveals, “My speech will cover topics such as selflessness, sacrifice, valor, readiness, competence, and the everlasting soul.”

Linda is indeed a game changer that has influenced many successful women in entrepreneurship stewardship roles.

Linda also served as a board member of the Southern Crescent Resource Ministry in McDonough, Georgia for 2 years.

brothers building brothers Streetz of Gentlemen was established in 2014 under the vision of Derek "Mic Dangerous" Perry and the founding fathers Andreal Mallard, Nathaniel Joseph and Jamal Burt. Our mission has been the mission from day one, Educate the mind, elevate the spirit, to Eliminate the Stereotype #EEEsUp. Over the past few years we have partnered with several organizations across the Southeast Region in an effort to reach students and our youth through mentorship and hands on educational forums providing young people with the tools and knowledge to reach success! We also work hand in hand with with local officials creating programs for ex offenders and those looking for a second chance at life.

Back in 2015 we decided to take a road trip to The Million Man March in Washington DC providing a journey of the young boys we were mentoring the experience of a lifetime, a chance to bound and grow together by establishing the essence of brothers building brothers.

With our own resources from t shirt sales and grassroots efforts of fund raising we began our program and doors began to open for us thru the educational realm connecting with teachers and guidance counselors due to the demand of having positive male presence in the schools.

We put on our suits, got suited and booted and started right in our local community at McDonough High and Middle School and as of present we are now in over 11 schools across the South Atlanta Metro area. As we saw the crisis our young boys were facing growing up in single parent homes sometimes left with grandparents or aunties and uncles to raise them,

Our #EEEsUp Mentoring Program Is A 12 Week Educational Platform Broke Down Into 3 Phases of Educate The Mind, Elevate The Spirit, Eliminate The Stereotype. We Serve Boys age 5 thru 18 and provide interactive mentorship to increase civic engagement and Leadership.

The energy we create is the energy we partake we noticed that many of them had no father figure presence in their homes and lacked male leadership. Thankful for the guys like Paul Burt, Jeffery Thomas, and Xavier Johnson for stepping up we began to partner with local churches, our home church first Tabernacle of Praise Church International, and start a suit drive where we collected over 700 suits for boys and young men with the goal of dressing for success.

Our journey continued as we partnered with the Henry County Delta in an effort to help ex offenders get back on their feet by providing suits and dress attire for job interviews. Our program is dedicated to helping males become better men. We also partner with organizations that serve girls and women, like A Woman's Standard and look forward to working with community leaders in an effort of motivation for change. We are thankful to have more brothers like Lamar Landrum, Wesley Connell, and Jae Ellis join our effort and are grateful to continue the growth for where God is leading us to go.

We named the place after my dad because everyone who knows him calls him Shorty.

(He’s Short, too). The inspiration for the place came from us wanting to leave a Legacy for our Children and grandchildren.

The Bible teaches us to leave a legacy for our Children’s Children. So what better Legacy besides Leading our Children into a personal relationship with Christ and a business that Honors Christ? Our three signature products have put us on the BBQ World’s map. Our pulled pork has really become famous due to the tenderness and the hint of smoke wood

taste. (We don’t inject any of our meats with liquid smoke; that’s cheating.) Our second-best seller is our Brunswick Stew. We have people from up north who have never had it, and now they are hooked. And we have the last signature item, our homemade Strawberry Lemonade. It’s made with real strawberries and real lemon juice. (No syrup flavoring real fruit.)

Shorty’s BBQ and More is just getting its name out.

We opened in March 2020, the first weekend, and closed the next weekend due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We chose to open a BBQ restaurant because we had the location, and I enjoy cooking smoked meat. Really a hobby that has turned into a small business. God took our business and turned it into a place for people to meet and talk about everything from family to politics. We have gained a large extended family from Shorty’s BBQ and More and give God all the Glory.

THE SECRET TO SUCCESS IS SIMPLE 1. First, pray about the business and if God wants you to do this particular business. 2.

Make sure that both people want to do the business and want to work it together.

3. Establish each other’s strengths and weaknesses within the business. 4. Decide who will do what and who will make the final decision for each business area. 5.

Remember not to let your disagreements infiltrate your home or business. Leave the home disagreements at home and leave the business disagreements at work.

Pray, having personal devotional time, and continual communication with each other are ingredients of a great recipe for a workable marriage in business.

WE ARE MINISTRY EVERYDAY

Sharon Dewberry is a former Henry County Schools student and retiree of the Henry County Board of Education Administrative Office. I have been retired for five years. I attended all levels of Henry County Schools for my education. So, when I applied and was hired to work for two African-American women who had been part of my elementary school years but were also women who lived in the community. I grew up admiring and was mentored by them, so I felt that it was an honor to serve them. So, with that, it was more than just a job or position for me. The legacy of educators who had invested in me as a student and as a young lady from the community became my co-workers and bosses. These educators paved the way for my position because they were employed as educators in Henry County during segregation and desegregation. I wanted to make sure that their educational investment in me was reflected in my work, also their investment in me from their character and professionalism showed through in my work ethic.

John Dewberry grew up in Henry County. My heart and family are in Henry County. The people I meet and converse with are meeting the old Henry County. The old Henry County is where everyone knew each other and took care of each other. I’m family-structured, and I love seeing families succeed, so you can get that and more with a smile and encouraging words.
