NEW YEAR

A

nd just like that, another year is over! Our team had a busy 2 0 2 5 wh ich i nclude d t he launch of The Pearl. Looking back on last year’s issues, each was filled with inspirational locals, tips and tricks from experts, and curated shopping recommendations. As we plan out our 2026 content, we intend to keep all things New Orleans at the forefront of our stories and are excited to share incredible homes, weddings, tablescapes, and more. If there is anything you think we should cover, please reach out. We’d love to hear from you!

This issue includes everything you need to start 2026 off on a high note. If you’re looking to upgrade your coffee experience, fun events in January to participate in, and a new boutique on Magazine Street, head straight to New + Now. Great advice on finding connection in both your personal and professional lives comes courtesy of Michelle Johnston, PhD, in Word of Advice. If 2026 is the year of maintaining healthy habits or trying a new hobby out, visit Now Trending. Home Tour is sure to offer great house inspiration as are our hardworking January A-Listers who have many exciting projects on the horizon.

Currently reading: Broken Country by Clare Leslie Hall and The Correspondent by Virginia Evans 2026 goals: In 2025, I took sewing classes, experimented more in the kitchen, and really worked on getting my screen time down by taking long breaks from Instagram. This year, I’m hoping to make some baby clothes, tackle dishes that seemed too intimidating, and be even more intentional with my phone. A podcast I recently listened to suggested treating your phone like a Swiss Army Knife and not a slot machine: use it only when you need to instead of picking it up for entertainment or to kill time.

Thank you for supporting us and our advertisers during The Pearl’s inaugural year! Keep up with us on social media, our website, and our weekly newsletter which always includes fun and interesting events happening each weekend. I’ll be signing off for a few months while I’m on maternity leave (surprise!), but The Pearl is in great hands while I’m away. I can’t wait to read and support from home! – Michaela Bechler

THE PEARL

If you’re already in Mardi Gras mode, we’ve got you covered with items that are fit for the parade route and beyond. Think ball gowns, hostess gifts, and gear that is ready for revelry! We also explore the color trend we’ve seen everywhere: icy blue. It feels wintery and seasonally appropriate but can easily be worn into the warmer months which will be here before we know it. Our adorable Shop Dogs round out this first issue of the year — be sure to pay them a visit the next time you're out and about Uptown.

Hot tip: If you still have poinsettias, you can plant them and treat them like any tropical houseplant throughout the year. With proper care, you’ll have your holiday flowers ready to go next year!

WHAT’S Brewing

REFINED Retail Founded and designed in New Orleans, Lapeyre has recently opened its flagship location nestled amongst other small businesses and neighborhood staples. Through trunk shows and pop-ups, founder and creative director Martha Lapeyre saw how meaningful in-person connections can be and dreamt up a storefront where people feel welcomed, inspired, and at home. “Online shopping is convenient, but there is nothing like seeing how a woman’s face lights up when she steps into a dress or hearing the personal moments she’s shopping for,” Martha shared. “A physical space allows for true styling, conversation, and relationship-building. It brings the emotional side of the brand to the forefront and lets people experience the garments as they were meant to be tried on: slowly, thoughtfully, and with ease.”

Customers can discover beautiful dresses, skirts, blouses, and occasion wear thoughtfully made for the modern, self-assured woman. “The brand is grounded in versatility and heritage, so whether it’s holiday dressing, resort escapes, or timeless wardrobe staples, my goal is for women to find pieces that they’ll return to again and again.” You can shop at Lapeyre Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Stocked with beans from across the globe, Current Crop Roasting Shop (CCRS) has been educating coffee lovers on Magazine Street since 2023. The shop offers classes like Coffee Cocktail Creation, Pastry Pairing, and Home Roasting which demonstrates how roast levels impact taste. A natural addition, the shop is now serving specialty coffee drinks at its Espresso Bar! “We will serve espresso drinks, drip coffee, drip coffee with chicory, and pour over coffee to start; cold brew and blended drinks coming soon,” shared director of products and programs Catherine Mansell. The beverage selection can be enhanced with Proper Syrups from California in flavors like pistachio, salted caramel, vanilla, and hazelnut, as well as with milk and dairy-free alternatives. “For espresso, we are offering two options: one is a house blend of Guatemalan and Peruvian coffees we carry. The Guatemalan is more chocolate-heavy, and the Peruvian is more malty and earthy; I chose to blend them together for a fuller-bodied, chocolate malty espresso.” The shop will also offer a single-origin espresso that will change monthly. “We’re so excited to start this new venture of serving our coffee, but don’t forget that CCRS also sells roasted coffee, as well as unroasted beans, which we can teach you how to roast yourself on our roasting stations…come experience our entire shop, and we’ll help you find the coffee that’s perfect for you.”

rowing up, Michelle K. Johnston’s family lived all over the United States, from New Jersey to Nashville and a host of cities in between. It’s unsurprising then, given her early nomadic life, that Michelle’s work — she is a Distinguished Professor of Business at Loyola University New Orleans, teaching leadership and strategic communication, as well as a sought-after public speaker and author — centers on connection. Also unsurprising is that after so many decades of wandering, she would dig deep roots in New Orleans after falling in love with the city during a college internship and vowing to move here post-graduation. “New Orleans is the epicenter of connection,” says Michelle, who indeed moved here after earning her PhD at LSU and went all in, parading with Muses over the years and becoming a regular at Saturday’s live music offerings at Uptown bar Kingpin. “We have so many opportunities to come together [in New Orleans] over food, over festivals.” Through her work, which includes “The Seismic Shift Podcast,” and

her first book The Seismic Shift in Leadership, Michelle explores the cultivation of meaningful personal and professional relationships. The Seismic Shift in YOU: The Seven Necessary Shifts to Create Connection and Drive Results, her latest book co-authored with mentor Marshall G oldsmith, was released in November and builds on this foundation. It urges readers to rethink connection amid our increasingly disconnected world. Inspiration for The Seismic Shift in YOU struck the author at a Thinkers 5 0 event in L ondon, dubbed the “Oscars of management thinking.” Throughout the event, Michelle heard a recurring theme amid discussions of AI, automation, and accelerating change, and the answer to navigating this terrain was clear. “I listened to the top thinkers, presentation after presentation, talk about how we have to lean in with heart and humanity. That is the only way we’re going to differentiate ourselves. That’s the only way we’re going to survive and thrive.”

P H OTO B Y K I M B E R LY M I M E L E S

The co-authors set out to explore how leaders and individuals could cultivate deeper, more intentional connections, realizing that the need for connection is a global crisis. Pointing to research from Dr. Vivek Murthy, the former U.S. Surgeon General, Michelle cites his warning that, as she puts it, we are “going into an epidemic of loneliness, disconnection, [and] isolation as a result of technology.” But, she says,

connection is a universal solution to a pervasive problem. The book is structured as a guide for personal and professional well-being, offering “seven shifts of what we can do so we can not be lonely, not be depressed, so that we can be healthier and happier.” In the book, Michelle shares a profound lesson learned from personal experience. When her first book was about to launch in March 2020,

WORD OF ADVICE

“If what we want is health, happiness, and meaningful relationships, we’ve got to shift, and we’ve got to shift our mindsets towards connection.” - MICHELLE K. JOHNSTON

The book is a powerful reminder that while we all navigate the “busyness” of life, making time for intentional connections — with others and with ourselves — is the compass guiding us toward a more fulfilling existence. Simply put, Michelle says, “We can’t keep doing what we’ve always been doing.”

JANUARY 2026

the COVID-19 lockdowns went into effect. She delayed the release for two years and re-interviewed leaders to understand how connection could exist in our newly remote world. At one point, Michelle says she was saying “yes to everyone and everything” globally — and found herself on the brink of burnout. She recalls her daughter saying, “Mom, I’ve been home for two weeks and I’ve barely seen you.” The moment

was a poignant wake-up call and became the bedrock of the book: true connection begins with selfcare, health, and well-being and that the relentless pursuit of tasks and transactions will not deliver health, happiness, or meaningful relationships. What’s required is a mindset shift toward connection, small tweaks in how we run meetings, engage in conversations, and the language we use.

Alon is the Chef-Partner of Pomegranate Hospitality (which includes Saba, Miss River, and Chandelier Bar in New Orleans as well as Safta in Denver), and Emily is the Director of New Projects where she oversees strategic growth and development of new restaurants.

2025 was a big year for Emily and Alon: Saba was recognized by The New York Times as one of the best restaurants in New Orleans and received a nod from MICHELIN. The family also moved Uptown after 10 years in Mid-City and were busy with their upcoming openings including Safta’s Table, which will debut in Lakeview this spring. The neighborhood all-day Mediterranean cafe will offer counter service from breakfast to dinner, grab-and-go offerings, family meals, catering packages, and a beverage program. Over in Denver, Ceci! Italian Lounge will open in The Source Hotel. When the Shayas aren’t opening new eateries, you can find them enjoying all that New Orleans has to offer with their family.

Healthy NEW YEAR! BY SAR AH R AVITS

T

he new year is always a time to reflect and set some goals — and reverse some of the over-indulgences of the holiday season. Kick off 2026 with these healthy habits!

JANUARY 2026

THE PEARL

INTUITIVE EATING

P

ilates has become an increasingly popular workout amongst all ages, focusing on low-impact movements that build strength and improve flexibility. “It’s a full-body workout with a strong core focus, and it challenges you without burning you out — so you can stay consistent,” shared owner of Devotion Studios Anya Sapozhnikova. Although Anya is not a Pilates instructor — she teaches aerial silks — she enjoys Pilates and recognizes its impact. “I came to Pilates through necessity. After twenty years as an aerialist managing chronic injuries, Pilates became what kept me strong and functional. When I relocated to New Orleans, I couldn’t find classes close to where I actually live my life, and that gap inspired me to build the studio of my dreams.”

Located within the lively French Quarter, Devotion Studios is an escape, offering open-level classes for 16 anyone wanting to move with intention. “Our mission

is to improve lives through mindful movement — not only for people already committed to Pilates, but especially for those who’ve never worked out or wish they did more.” The timing to explore Pilates or join a new workout studio couldn’t be better, with a new year underway and fitness goals front and center. “Whether you’re an acrobat entering your 40s or someone who’s spent years at a desk, Pilates helps you rebuild strength, address what’s limiting you, and move through life with more control and longevity. It simply helps people do what they love, for longer.” For first-timers, Anya recommends coming in with an open mind and letting the instructor guide you. The skilled instructors at Devotion Studios each have their own styles, so there’s a variety of playlists and vibes to be expected! “Focus on being present, stay curious, and trust the process. You’ll most likely have fun and meet a friend or two while you’re at it.”

216B CHARTRES STREET

Instead of focusing on deprivation or setting up what can quickly become unattainable goals, experts are suggesting a shift toward an “anti-diet” framework known as intuitive eating. That means learning how to trust your body and understanding its unique needs without obsessing over calories and weight. Emily Van Eck, a registered dietician and certified intuitive eating counselor, has nine years of experience in helping people develop healthier eating and fitness habits. She runs a private practice specializing in improving health through balanced, non-diet nutrition and runs a group program called Love Food Again. “A non-diet approach is an excellent choice,” for people looking to reset in 2026, she says. “I don’t recommend strict programs like Whole30; they’re not the approach I use to help people build healthy, balanced, longterm relationships with food.” In general, she works on finding ways to enhance rather than eliminate food

POP-UP YOGA

Cost also doesn’t need to be a barrier. While some studios might charge $20 or $25 for a drop-in class, many local studios and individual instructors offer at least some classes at a discount, or they take a “pay what you can” approach. Some places, like Swan River and Free To Be, also teach courses that can be streamed online and taken from the comfort of your own home.

She also encourages people not to focus so much on weight, because it can lead to negative outcomes on mental health or derail attempts to build healthy habits for life. “I like to suggest folks decouple weight loss from health goals if they want to find routines and habits that genuinely feel good to them and that they can stick to as they age.”

All of this is great news for New Orleanians, who don’t need to travel far or break the bank to pick up some healthier hobbies. The benefits of yoga can be life-changing for people of any age or body type, because yoga encompasses not just physical activity and stretching, but also mindfulness, breathing exercises and meditation — all of which have proven benefits for improving mental health, too. Whether you’re a beginner, intermediate, or advanced practitioner, there’s pretty much something for everyone.

Emily Van Eck is a self-described bean enthusiast. “I am always trying to help my clients figure out how to enjoy beans and lentils on a more regular basis. They’re full of protein, fiber, and slow-burning carbs, and are super versatile and affordable,” she says. “I also love pumpkin seeds sprinkled on just about anything.”

Emily rejects the notion that to be healthy people need to give up certain foods — unless it’s an allergen or something they truly don’t enjoy. “I believe that all foods can have a place in a healthy diet, as long as you’re also eating plenty of the good stuff.”

Yoga has been popular for a while now, but it’s become even more accessible and approachable in New Orleans, thanks to pop-ups and community classes in practically every neighborhood and venue type. For example, instructors with the NOLA Vibe Yoga collective host classes at Hotel Peter and Paul, Livaudais Hall, City Park, and even local breweries throughout the year.

WHAT’S the

STITCH? BY MICHAELA BECHLER

F

or anyone who hasn’t contracted the needlepoint bug, a quick visit to Instagram, TikTok, or your local needlepoint store might do the trick! While the art has been around for centuries, needlepoint has resurged as a trending hobby and materialized through online content, local stitching communities, and new designers who are creating niche canvasses for stitchers near and far.

THE PEARL

“I think needlepoint has resonated with so many people because it offers a creative pause in a very fast, digital world,” Kiersten Jeanné Keller, the founder and designer of KJK Needlepoint, shared. “It is something you can do at home to unwind, but it can also be incredibly social, whether that means stitching with friends, bringing a project on vacation, or attending a class or event within the needlepoint community. It appeals to all ages and experience levels and provides a creative hobby that so many people are craving, while also creating a meaningful sense of community.” Kiersten first tried needlepoint in 2022 before giving it more attention in 2024. She quickly became hooked, began designing and painting her own canvasses, and taught anyone who wanted to learn, including her sixth-grade students. She created a needlepoint-related Instagram account (@kjkneedlepoint) to share what she was making, which soon turned into creating and selling her original designs.

JANUARY 2026

Another local designer, Meg Francez of MF Needlepoint (@mfneedlepoint), picked up needlepoint projects throughout high school, college, and the pandemic, but quickly became engrossed while working on a project during a girls’ trip in 2023. Meg also began painting her own canvasses that appealed to her interests, which opened the door to creating everything from minis (cleverly finished into bag charms) to meaningful “Baby’s First Christmas” 18 ornaments for stitchers around the country.

PHOTO COURTESY OF K JK NEEDLEPOINT

Meg credits TikTok with needlepoint’s rise in popularity, especially among younger people. “Stitchers are sharing ‘Stitch Mail Monday,’ ‘WIP Wednesday,’ and ‘Finishing Friday’ videos, along with tutorials. Seeing people enjoy the hobby and breaking it down in accessible ways removes the intimidation factor. It shows that needlepoint isn’t just your grandmother’s hobby; it’s creative, relaxing, and approachable.” A visit to Needle Arts (5301 Canal Boulevard) is a must for any New Orleanian interested in pursuing the hobby. The shop has been in business for almost 33 years and offers hundreds of canvasses, all types of threads, accessories, and more. “Many needlepoint artists focus on prep, coastal, and femininity,” said Laura Lennox, one of Needle Arts’ primary owners alongside Me’me’ Wilson and Vickie Bartels. “We offer something a bit different with our own line, consisting of almost 500 canvases that are sassy, fun, and often thematic to New Orleans and the South.” For anyone unsure of where to begin, Meg suggests starting with a canvas you truly love. “If you’re excited about what you’re stitching, the hobby becomes something you look forward to and sticks.” And if you’re interested in being social, explore local stitch groups that meet a few times a month around town. “It’s always fun to see what everyone is working on as everyone’s styles and tastes are so different. There’s a great sense of encouragement and creativity.” Needle Arts also sells beginner kits that include an original instruction book. “We think it is the best, most comprehensive one out there. With the purchase of the kit, we give you a quick lesson to get you started and encourage you to hang out with us until it clicks,” Laura said.

Besides carnival colors, another eye-catching statement is the set of bold, pop art portraits found above the bar cabinet. “The clients already had a collection of New Orleans art in their home and expressed a strong liking for Michael Guidry’s work. I was familiar with his art and always adored his whimsical and avantgarde painting of Napoleon, so we commissioned him to create

Maureen guided the design process, as the clients were very open to suggestions. A playful yet refined palette, the designer integrated shades of purple, green, and gold throughout the piedà-terre. “I didn’t initially set out to go too literal with Mardi Gras and New Orleans colors; the palette simply evolved organically.” Not much changed after the initial design decisions were made, other than adapting a few items to fit inside the tiny elevator and doorway, as well as the addition of a door to separate the main living spaces from the bedroom.

Among the elements Maureen loves most are the whimsical wallpaper anchoring the living room from MINDTHEGAP, the dining area with a crystal chandelier from Dop Antiques, and the bright green bathroom splashed with Bancha by Farrow & Ball. By utilizing pops of color and layering sleek items against fun accent pieces — like the leopard stool from Ballard Designs — Maureen’s completed vision for this piedà-terre embodies the true essence of New Orleans. “We have been working with a lot of out-of-towners who have fallen in love with New Orleans and purchased second or third homes here. I believe these clients are largely able to embrace their wilder side with their New Orleans home, and we are delighted to help them achieve that vision!”

“The best part [of the design process] was truly getting to know this couple — they are incredibly kind, accomplished yet down-to-earth, and fun. They have truly become my friends, and I am now working on their homestead in Virginia Beach.” – MAUREEN STEVENS

ocal artist Alex Beard is known for his gorgeous works featuring all types of animals, from bayou creatures to jungle cats. Complementing his passion for wildlife, Alex loves bringing his two pups — Mousse and Poppyseed — to his art studio with him. “I grew up with a love of animals, but I grew up in an apartment in New York City, so all we had were budgies and fish,” Alex shared. “Now I can have dogs, cats, and all the rest.”

Mousse: Birthday: September 1, 2021 Breed: Cocker Spaniel Nickname: A Furry Baby Favorite toy: A dirty t-shirt from the hamper

As with all of Alex’s pets, the two dogs have foodinspired names. “Mousse, for example, [is] the color of chocolate and vanilla mousse, and she’s soft and fluffy. Before these two pups there was a Whisky, a Bacon, a Cornbread, and a Chicory!” Alex also has two cats — Groceries and Bitings — who are Mousse and Poppyseed’s best friends.

Alex’s artistry expands beyond the canvas with his NOLA Couture collaboration. “After the huge success of our silk printed ties together, we expanded the collection with ‘ribbon items’ including pet wear. The collars and leashes are made locally in New Orleans and fit pups of all sizes!” Mousse and Poppyseed can attest to the stylish design and comfortable fit! Throughout 2026, feel free to visit Alex Beard Studio to not only meet this dog duo, but to see Alex’s art and many books in person. “I’m always making new paintings, drawings, and prints to fill my Magazine Street gallery with my dog assistants by my side, of course. Swing by anytime.”

JANUARY 2026

While at the studio, you can find the pair admiring Alex’s paintings (especially the ones featuring birds) or barking to get the attention of children walking by. The Cocker Spaniel and Fox Red Lab are always unapologetically themselves wherever they go — this includes slacking off a little at work to sneak in a nap. Both Mousse and Poppyseed also enjoy exploring the Garden District, walking in Audubon Park, and hanging out in Dat Dog’s courtyard.
