Mini-fests, concert series and special shows after Jazz Fest | by Will Coviello WITH 580 BANDS TAKING JAZZ FEST’S DOZEN STAGES, there’s plenty of

music at the Fair Grounds. And there has to be somewhere to go for all those musicians and fans after the Fair Grounds close. The options include mini-fests on the days between the festival’s weekend dates and special shows around the city. There also are extra late-night shows, with some starting after midnight. It’s a good time to check regular music venues as well as off-the-beaten path spots for special shows. Here are some of the slates of special events.

NOLA CRAWFISH FEST. Chris

“Shaggy” Davis, who opened NOLA Crawfish King Seafood & Barbecue in Gentilly, started this between-weekends festival. The event features boiled crawfish and several bands every night, with an emphasis on all-star jams and New Orleans funk. Wednesday’s closing night lineup features Anders Osborne, George Porter Jr., Ivan Neville and Stanton Moore performing as the NCF Allstars.

Also on the bill are keyboardist Marco Benevento, Soulive guitarist Eric Krasno, the North Mississippi Allstars’ Luther Dickinson, bluesman Jonathon “Boogie” Long and more. The festival runs May 1-3 at the Broadside. There also is a crawfish cookoff and eating contest.

DAZE BETWEEN. A two-day, daytime, mid-week event, Daze Between features two music stages on the lawn at Faubourg Brewery. The Connecticut jam band Goose is the headliner both days. Tank and the Bangas, Lawrence, Melt and others perform on Tuesday, May 2. George Porter Jr. & Runnin’ Pardners, David Shaw, Neal Francis and others perform Wednesday, May 3. CAFE ISTANBUL NIGHTFEST. Cafe

Istanbul is home to events ranging from Moth storytelling contests to Fly Circus Space’s monthly salon of aerial and circus arts. During Jazz Fest, it’s home to the Poolside Presents concert series, featuring several all-star collaborations.

Highlights include Nicholas Payton’s Covers for Lovers show, which starts Saturday after midnight

(1 a.m. Sunday, May 6). He’s joined by guitar prodigy Marcus Machado, singer Erica Falls, Jamison Ross and others. San Francisco organist Wil Blades is joined by members of the Headhunters: Bill Summers, Mike Clark and Donald Harrison Jr. on Thursday, May 4.

BAYOU RENDEZVOUS. The Bayou

Rendezvous presents a stacked lineup of all-star bands on two stages at The Howlin’ Wolf to benefit the New Orleans Musicians’ Clinic. The New Orleans Allstars lineup includes Eric Krasno, Johnny Vidacovich, Theresa Andersson, Terence Higgins and more. Cool Cool Cool features former members of Brooklyn funk band Turkuaz. Good Enough for Good Times is made up of several members of Galactic.

Guitarmageddon: Dawn of the Dead is a late-night celebration of Grateful Dead music featuring more than a dozen musicians. Music starts at 9 p.m., Friday, May 5, and goes through the Sunrise Breakfast Jam, which starts at 5:30 a.m. Saturday.

BACKBEAT JAZZFEST SERIES. The Backbeat Foundation hosts a series of late shows at Blue Nile. The lineup mixes local jazz and funk and visitors including Marco Benevento and others. Wil Blades leads a tribute to former fellow San Francisco organist Dr. Lonnie Smith, featuring Donald Harrison Jr., drummer Herlin Riley and Will Bernard on Tuesday, May 2. SIX OF SATURNS. The Ace Hotel

hosts a music series with live music, DJs and parties. Highlighting the lineup is drummer and vocalist Jamison Ross, joined by Anjelika “Jelly” Joseph and Gabrielle Cavassa, on Saturday, May 6. Soul and R&B singer Durand Jones celebrates the release of a solo album, “Wait Til I Get Over,” and Joy Clark performs, on Thursday, May 4.

Preservation Hall has made its Midnight Preserves shows a Jazz Fest-time tradition. There are 11 p.m. shows at the hall every night of the festival this year. The lineup is not announced in advance, but the appearance of special guests has always been the allure, such as past years’ visits by Robert Plant, Jon Batiste, Gary Clark Jr. and Jason Isbell. An open bar is included for these shows. Tickets are sold out for the second weekend (May 4-7), but people can get on the online waiting list via preshallfoundation. org/midnightpreserves.

HaSizzle, the New Orleans king of bounce, was featured earlier this month at Frank Ocean’s Coachella performance, and videos of him twerking and dancing went viral. That’s because HaSizzle dressed as a security guard by the stage, so when the festival cameras threw him on the big screen, many in attendance didn’t realize it was him. “Frank Ocean got this security guard shaking ass LMFAO,” one tweet read.

Louisiana House Education Committee approves two anti-LGBTQ bills THE LOUISIANA HOUSE EDUCATION COMMITTEE APRIL 26 APPROVED two

new anti-LGBTQ bills barring discussion of “sexual orientation or gender identity” in schools while also requiring schools and staff to use trans student’s dead names and pronouns that “align with the student’s sex” unless their parents agree otherwise.

The approval of the bills on 7-5 votes came following hours of testimony in opposition to the two measures.

The first, House Bill 466 by Dodie Horton, a Haughton Republican, would prevent K-12 public school employees or presenters from discussing “sexual orientation or gender identity” in the classroom or during extracurricular activities.

The bill bans “incorporating into classroom instruction or discussion topics of sexual orientation or gender identity in a manner that deviates from state content standards or curricula developed or approved by the public school governing authority” and, specifically, employees and presenters from discussing their personal sexual orientation or gender identity.

It’s a version of the “Don’t Say Gay” bill Florida lawmakers

passed last year and are trying to expand this year. More than a dozen states are considering similar legislation.

The bill also would forbid teachers, employees and presenters from “using a pronoun for a student that differs from the pronoun that aligns with the student’s sex unless the student’s parent provides written permission.” But even with a parent’s explicit permission, teachers could ignore that request “if doing so is contrary to the employee’s religious or moral convictions.”

Many LGBTQ Louisiana residents testified that the bill could prevent queer children from feeling safe in school and talking to a trusted adult in their life about their sexuality. They said that’s especially true for queer kids who do not come from accepting families.

“Many queer youth don’t feel safe at home,” said Logan Wolf, board member of the LGBTQ rights organization Forum for Equality. “Their only place that they feel safe is in a school system talking to a supportive teacher or school administrator or counselor or someone who helps them in the school.”

The record was set back in in 2001, according to the Times-Picayune.

Festival producers have since expected more modest numbers, and this year it lingers somewhere between 475,000500,000. Still, expect dense crowds this weekend, particularly at the Festival Stage, which will host big names like Jon Batiste, Mumford & Sons, Dead & Company and Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue.

“This bill would have effectively made my suicidal thoughts go up drastically because I had nobody to talk to about who I was,” Wolf added.

New Orleans resident Tucker Barker said the first adult they came out to was a high school teacher.

“The teacher that I came out to, she made me feel so normal,” Barker said. “She told me that everything was going to be OK, that I could come out on my own time to my family, and that one day, just like all my peers, I would be able to find a loving partnership if I wanted one.”

House Bill 81 by Rep. Raymond Crews, a Bossier City Republican, would similarly require public school employees to use the name on a student’s birth certificate, in addition to the pronouns that “align with the student’s sex,” unless the parent otherwise gives permission. Crews amended his bill to allow employees to call students by a “derivative” of the name on their birth certificate.

Crews said his bill would ensure that a child is not going by a different name at school without their parents knowing.

“The bill is intended to prevent keeping secrets from the parents,” he said. “In particular, you want to change your identity, I would think parents definitely need to be involved in that.”

Crews did not acknowledge that LGBTQ youth may not feel comfortable or safe coming out to their parents. LGBTQ youth have higher rates of depression and suicide than their peers, and using the birth name someone no longer goes by, also known as “deadnaming,” or outing a queer person to their parents without their consent can contribute to that.

Like in Horton’s bill, the school employee could still refuse to call the student by different pronouns on religious or moral grounds, meaning in order for a transgender student to be called by their correct name and pronouns, they would need the support of both their parents and teacher.

When asked why the bill lets teachers opt out of calling a student by the name and pronouns their parent has agreed upon, Crews responded, “We want to

be respectful to everybody, but denying what we believe is truth to accommodate someone, I don’t see how that advances society.”

Crews also made a comment suggesting he thinks social media might be influencing kids’ gender identity.

“A child looks at Instagram, looks at TikTok, whatever outside,” he said. “They start thinking, well, maybe that’s the way I need to be or need to think or whatever. And this just makes sure the parent’s involved in that loop.”

Belinda Davis, a member of the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE), said she opposed the bill, noting that how a teacher treats an LGBTQ student impacts how their peers will treat them.

“When a child asks their teacher or their principal why those wishes aren’t being respected, the answer is going to be because your teacher objects to you on moral or religious grounds,” she said.

Some religious leaders, including representatives from the Louisiana Baptist Convention and Mike Holloway, a pastor at Ouachita

Baptist Church, and a few parents testified in support of the bills. But the vast majority of testimony the committee heard was against the bills, including from LGBTQ people, activists, parents, educators and students.

At a few points, the back and forth between legislators and those testifying against the bill became contentious. After one opponent of the bills called Chairman Lance Harris, an Alexandria Republican, “ignorant,” he cut off that person’s mike and asked security to remove them from the chambers.

Both votes were mostly along party lines, with Rep. Barbara Freiberg, a Baton Rouge Republican, joining Democrats in opposing the bill, saying she thought local governments and school boards should handle the matter.

Following the vote on the second measure, an opponent of the bill screamed “Fuck y’all!” before the live feed cut out.

THE OLD SAYING, “YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR ,” seems

to reflect what Louisiana voters feel they get from state lawmakers. Then again, we can’t think of anything more incongruous than paying people the pauper’s salary of $16,800 a year for overseeing an annual budget of more than $42 billion.

If you’re wondering how things got so out of proportion, it’s because lawmakers last received a salary bump in 1980.

We doubt anyone today would be willing to work for what their job paid 43 years ago. That’s why we support state Rep. Joe Marino’s House Bill 149, which would boost state legislators’ annual salary to $60,000 — starting AFTER the next round of statewide elections.

We suspect many voters will reflexively scoff at the idea of paying lawmakers more, perhaps citing statistics that show Louisiana trailing other Southern states in key indicia.

We understand that sentiment, but we also believe Louisiana is, in significant ways, noticeably better off today than it was eight years ago. Gov. John Bel Edwards deserves much of the credit for that, but so do legislators, even if they grudgingly accepted (read: were unable to overturn) Edwards’ best decisions, such as expanding Medicaid.

Some may question the timing of Marino’s bill, coming just months before most legislators will either seek reelection or other offices. Many lawmakers themselves may be reluctant to vote for a salary increase, even one that takes effect after their current terms end.

On that point, a brief history lesson is in order. In 2008, a brand-new set of lawmakers gave themselves a salary boost to $70,000 a year — after new Gov. Bobby Jindal quietly promised not to veto it. After a public outcry from citizens and the media, Jindal broke his word and vetoed the pay hike. (We note that Gambit was the only newspaper in the state that

supported the pay raise back then, for much the same reasons we support one now).

Since then, no lawmaker has dared put his or her name on a measure to increase legislative pay — until Marino this year.

It’s noteworthy, however, that Marino’s HB 149 differs sharply from the pay raise Jindal vetoed 15 years ago. First and foremost, HB 149 does not apply to current lawmakers. It also provides for a smaller increase than the one a previous Legislature approved in 2008. Finally, Marino’s bill would preclude future political angst over the salary issue by providing for pay hikes every four years, in amounts tied to the Consumer Price Index compiled by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics — and verified by the Legislative Auditor.

“By not increasing legislative salaries to a reasonable amount, we are limiting who can afford to be a representative or senator,” Marino told Gambit. “We’ll never have representative government if we only have wealthy and retired people governing.”

An early take on the major candidates for governor WITH THE OCT.14 PRIMARY FOR GOVERNOR STILL MORE THAN FIVE MONTHS AWAY, polls reflect who’s best known

and best funded rather than who’s best suited to lead Louisiana for the next four, possibly eight years.

Seven candidates are serious contenders — so far. Qualifying is Aug. 8-10. Here’s my early, alphabetically ordered take on their relative strengths and weaknesses: SHARON HEWITT — The two-term Republican state senator from Slidell began her career as an engineer on offshore oil rigs. A conservative hardliner, she’s intelligent, respected by her GOP colleagues and focused on solving problems — “I’m a doer, not a talker,” she says. Being the only woman in the race should give her an advantage, but her staunch anti-abortion record could hurt her chances among many women voters.

JEFF LANDRY — The two-term attorney general has the LAGOP’s official endorsement and is the frontrunner, so far, thanks to his appeal among Trump voters.

He’s the best known, best funded and best organized candidate — but also the least trusted and most disliked. A large swath of Anybody-But-Landry voters want an alternative to his rightwing pandering.

HUNTER LUNDY — A no-party independent, Lundy is a successful trial attorney and businessman from Lake Charles. He’s never held elected office, but he can self-finance his conservative message: “I don’t owe anybody anything, and I’ve been signing the front side of paychecks for a long time.” He appeals to evangelical Christians, and if he gains traction with them, he could become a spoiler to Landry.

RICHARD NELSON — The fasttalking, 37-year-old GOP lawmaker from Mandeville is a young man in a hurry. After one term in the House, he’s running for governor. An engineer and attorney, he began his career in the State Department’s Foreign Service.

He wants to eliminate the state income tax and legalize cannabis.

“That’s consistent with Republican principles of free market and individual liberty,” he says.

lawmaker from Covington in 2008, then won a 2017 special election for treasurer. A law-and-order fiscal hawk and military veteran, Schroder is one of three candidates from St. Tammany Parish struggling to gain traction statewide — even though he holds statewide office. He could be an alternative to Landry, if he can break out of the crowd.

STEPHEN WAGUESPACK — He’s the latest, and some say best, GOP alternative to Landry after resigning as head of the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry to run. An attorney, he was a top advisor to Gov. Bobby Jindal from 2008 to 2012. He’s smart, polished and a good fundraiser, but voters remember that Jindal gutted higher ed and health care. “Wags” will have to convince them he won’t be Bobby Jindal 2.0.

SHAWN WILSON — Thus far the only Democrat and only Black candidate, Wilson worked for 25 years in state government, the last seven as JBE’s secretary of Transportation. He earned bipartisan respect and trust as an affable, pragmatic bureaucrat, but as a candidate for governor he’ll be the target of right-wing and, let’s face it, racist attacks. He’ll likely lead the pack if he remains the contest’s only Dem — but, given Louisiana’s voting history, he’s Landry’s dream runoff opponent.

Stay tuned. The real race is yet to begin.

Your article on Buster Holmes (April 25) and Jazz Fest food got us talking about one of our favorite festival food items: the Mango Freeze. How long has it been offered at the Jazz Fest?

Mango Freeze has been a part of the Jazz and Heritage Festival’s food and drink offerings since the 1990s.

An earlier version of the dessert was offered at the 1984 World’s Fair. It was the creation of Har Keswani, who with his wife Anila opened the Taj Mahal Indian restaurant in Metairie in 1982.

The Jazz Fest version was introduced in 1994 (the fest’s 25th anniversary) as a fundraiser for radio station WWOZ, which is owned by the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and Foundation.

According to WWOZ, Tracy Westin, an employee of chef Susan Spicer’s Bayona restaurant, offered to create a mango sorbet product that the station could sell at the Fair Grounds to raise money.

While the product was popular from the beginning, the logistical challenges of producing and serving mass quantities of a frozen treat in often hot and humid temperatures proved daunting.

In fact, the Mango Freeze booth closed down before the end of the first fest.

With some tweaks, it returned the following year and has remained a fixture ever since. More than 375 gallons of the mango sorbet are produced on a typical Jazz Fest day, though even that is often not enough to satisfy the Mango Freeze fans.

BL AKEVIE W AS THE SECOND WEEKEND OF THIS YEAR’S NEW ORLEANS JAZZ AND HERITAGE FESTIVAL APPROACHES, visit the Allison Miner Music Heritage Stage, which

returns this year after a three-year absence.

Born in Baltimore, Miner grew up in Daytona Beach, Florida, where her high school classmates included Greg and Duane Allman. She moved to New Orleans in the late 1960s to work at the Louisiana State Museum and later the Hogan Jazz Archive at Tulane University. There, she worked alongside a young ethnomusicology student named Quint Davis.

Jazz Fest founder George Wein reached out to the curator of the Hogan Jazz Archive, Richard “Dick” Allen, to ask for volunteers to help him organize the first Jazz Fest.

According to the Times-Picayune’s Keith Spera, after meeting over coffee and beignets at Café du Monde, Wein recruited Miner and Davis to join his effort. Miner had a gift for recruiting performers for the event, venturing to clubs to discover and sign them up, even hosting them overnight in her home during the fest because there was no budget for hotel rooms.

“From those early days, I’d like to think my contribution has been maternal,” she wrote in the book “Jazz Fest Memories,” published in 1997 with photographer Michael P. Smith. “I have always wanted to make sure the musicians were treated right, that they were fed and had an experience that they happily remembered. They were part of a festival that touched people’s lives.”

In 1988, Miner established the Music Heritage Stage as a way to introduce festivalgoers to the performers through interviews and intimate performances. She also established the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation Archive, which contains recordings from musicians’ interviews, as well as other memorabilia.

Miner died of multiple myeloma in 1995. The Music Heritage Stage, located in the Fair Grounds grandstand, was renamed for her in 2001.

Among the artists appearing there this weekend are Melissa Etheridge, Terence Blanchard, Ronnie Lamarque and Christian McBride.

HE 2023 NEW ORLEANS JAZZ & HERITAGE FESTIVAL CONCLUDES with a long

weekend of headliners, Louisiana legacies, Puerto Rican music and culture and more on May 4-7. The lineup features Dead & Company, Jon Batiste, Santana, Ludacris, Farruko, Herbie Hancock, Melissa Etheridge, Irma Thomas, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue and many more.

The Cultural Exchange Pavilion highlights Puerto Rico, with visiting musicians performing in the pavilion and across other stages. The pavilion also highlights Puerto Rican art, culture and food, and there are daily parades on the grounds with La Casa de la Plena Tito Matos.

The festival has gone cashless, and many vendors, including food and drink vendors, do not accept cash. Attendees can use credit, debit and prepaid cards, as well as Apple Pay, Google Pay and

Contents Samsung Pay. There also are Cash Exchange booths where attendees can use cash to get a prepaid card for no fee.

The cards are usable off the grounds, so there won’t be lost leftover balances.

Tickets and VIP packages are available online. Single-day tickets are $85 plus fees and available through May 3. Gate prices are $95 for general admission, and $5 for children ages 2-10 with an adult. On Thursday, Louisiana residents with ID can purchase up to two $50 tickets at the gate for admission that day.

hip-hop and soul. “Loco Pero Feliz” (crazy but happy) will be stuck in your head for a minute.

All of the above artists (except Farruko) also appear in the Cultural Exchange Pavillion stage, as well as afro-Boricua band Emplegoste, Bronx-born Puerto Rico resident and expert Latin jazz trumpeter Charlie Sepúlveda and his jazz ensemble, The Turnaround. Then there’s the dynamic actor-cum-singer Malentina of Puerto Rico, now resident of Lafayette, along with the traditional bomba and plena band Tambuyé, who enchant with their choruses of singers and drums.

The pavillion also hosts bands not from Puerto Rico, like: 6 Hearts with members of Vishtèn + The East Pointers of Prince Edward Island, Lina Babilonia Bullerengue from Maria La Baja Colombia, RAM from Haiti, Mariachi Jalisco and Fermin Ceballos of the Dominican Republic.

But there’s more than just meets the oreja to the Cultural Exchange Pavillion. For your boca, the Warehouse District’s tropical restaurant Carmo is partnering up with street food vendor Fowlmouth, who fuses Puerto Rican and Japanese cuisine.

They’ll serve trifongo, the Puerto Rican cousin to mofongo: plantains and yucca mashed with garlic and served with a choice of pork, shrimp or vegetables. They’ll also have stewed chicken empanadas and a guava cake for dessert.

There also are cooking demonstrations for trifongo relleno de (filled

with) ceviche in case Carmo and Fowlmouth get you wanting to make your own, and arroz con gandules (rice with pigeon peas).

For your ojos, there will be artist demonstrations for two different mask makers from the towns of Loiza and Ponce, showing off vejigante masks — demonic figures derived from Spanish folklore but syncretized with African styling.

There will also be a drum maker on hand and a designer of bomba dresses — known for their flowy long skirts, gripped in hand and tossed about in the bomba dance. Don Rimx, a Puerto Rican muralist, will display some of his designs.

Maria Rivera Laborde will have her own exhibition of mosaics inspired by her native Puerto Rico, as well as Wanda Benvenutti’s photojournalism on the Puerto Rican diaspora, alongside displays of Boricua album cover art and the evolution of bomba fashion.

And in case you want to go full immersion, La Casa de la Plena Tito Matos will lead a parade of plena drummers and bomba dancers, coursing through the Fair Grounds.

Jazz Fest seems to have cooked up a tasty little trifongo of Puerto Rican culture this year — with bomba at the heart, beating out rhythms that spread into techno, jazz, reggaeton, photography, vejigantes and flowing dresses. It won’t be much of a stretch to picture yourself on the island itself, heat and all.

more literally transportive than the Cultural Exchange Pavilion. Previous years focused on nations like The Democratic Republic of Congo, Cuba and South Africa, among others.

This year, as a makeup for their canceled spot in 2020 due to the disease that shall not be named, Puerto Rico is being spotlighted. The celebration — which includes music, parades, a food stand, and arts and cooking demonstrations — is titled “Pa’lante Puerto Rico!”

The phrase is the Puerto Rican accent’s spelling of “para delante,” meaning “moving forward,” and it nods to the song of the same title

by New Orleans band Hurray for the Riff Raff, whose Alynda Segarra is of Puerto Rican descent. Segarra makes an appearance at the Cultural Exchange Pavilion on Friday, May 5.

Some people may see the “Cultural Exchange” designation and dismiss it as some kind of sentimental “We Are the World” situation. But in fact, you might miss out on some absolute superstars simply because you’ve never heard of them. Most of this year’s Puerto Rican bands will play both more intimate shows in the pavilion tent and sets on larger Jazz Fest stages, so let’s help you out.

Farruko is undoubtedly the headliner among this contingent. Count him as the senior member in the Boricuan Brat Pack of emotion-laden, confessional Latin trap/reggaeton artists like Bad Bunny and Ozuna.

Farruko, 31, actually helped launch Bad Bunny’s career by featuring him on his 2017 track “Krippy Kush.”

Farruko’s Puerto Rican accent, which eschews consonants in favor of a warble of blurred vowels, lends itself to a mournful howl that sometimes floats above zippy, funky beats, and sometimes cuts new ones in a tidy rap. His lyrics cover topics of lost loves, pills as hangover cures, and God (he once notoriously went on a 15-minute sermon at a concert instead of playing his hits).

Even if the two-time Grammy winning Farruko isn’t a household name in your neck of the woods, he sure is en otros barrios. His hit “Pepas,” which makes a hat tip to Mexican tribal music, has over 1.25 billion

listens. Expect a crowd when he plays Saturday, May 6, at the Congo Square Stage.

New Orleans shares commonalities with Puerto Rico that go well beyond being a (controversy alert) “territory” of the U.S. Or the devastating hurricanes. Or the suffocatingly hot climate. People call New Orleans the northernmost Caribbean city for good reason. The musical diaspora that came here from West Africa by way of the slave trade influenced jazz and also has its distinct echoes in Puerto Rico’s music.

La Raiz Bomba Mayaguezana is a prime example of this. Their very traditional percussion and singing based music accompanied by dancers is called “bomba,” named after the old rum barrels that were converted into drums (sugar cane production is another commonality between South Louisiana and Puerto Rico). Catch them in the pavilion and other stages Friday, May 5, through Sunday, May 7.

The band Atabal, who take Festival Stage on Friday, May 5, and also perform Thursday, May 4, upgraded their traditional bomba quartet into a bit more of a pan-Latin big band over the years, but still retains their traditional Puerto Rican roots. La Tribu de Abrante also puts themselves in the contemporary bomba-fusion category (seeing a pattern here?), integrating a little more salsa, jazz and sometimes rap, boasting a brass section and even the occasional electronic instrument.

If you’re looking for a deeper push into the electronic, check out the anomalous yet singular ÌFÉ.

While the group’s leader Otura Mun was born in Indiana and now resides in New Orleans, the band was largely based in Puerto Rico, where Mun became a high priest in the Yoruban religion. They’ve staked out a unique genre overlap of traditional Afro-beat, trap, Jamaican dancehall, all inflected with traditional African diasporan rhythms.

Pirulo y La Tribu understandably have been nominated for the Billboard Latin Music Award for Tropical Artist of the Year and Tropical Album of the Year with their catchy Cuban/Puerto Rican influenced music that dips a little bit in salsa,

“To find out that people were rediscovering their roots and their heritage through us was especially humbling,” she says.

Blato Zlato began in 2016 and released their debut album, “Swamp Gold,” early the next year. The group followed it up with the “Voyage” EP, an interpretation of a song

by Bulgarian singer Valya Mladenova Balkanska that is included on the “Golden Record” sent into space with NASA’s Voyager. Their sophomore album, “In the Wake,” was released in 2019.

Recently, Blato Zlato has been playing more often outside of New Orleans, with tours across the Midwest, Southeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. And earlier this year, the band was selected by the Western Arts Alliance for its Performing Arts Discovery Showcase, a platform started by the National Endowment for the Arts to put U.S. performing artists before international festival and venue bookers. Blato Zlato was one of 25 acts to be selected and has shot a video of a live performance that will be shared on platforms for international markets.

Band members say they hope to focus on writing new material in 2023, and there are performances scheduled in New Orleans, including a show with Panorama Brass Band — for which Trayanova also drums — on Wednesday, May 3, at Siberia.

Blato Zlato makes its Jazz Fest debut on the Lagniappe Stage Thursday.

“There is a very small, but extremely loyal Balkan music scene here [in New Orleans],” Trayanova says. “For people within that, they are intimately familiar with Bulgarian music and our particular sound.

But I’d say the greater New Orleans music lovers on a whole are not familiar with this kind of music, and we would love to change that.”

BUDDY GUY IS SAYING GOODBYE to extensive touring. The living legend, who turns 87 in July, isn’t exactly retiring, but he won’t be hitting the road for a string of dates around the world in the future.

Last year, Guy released his latest studio album, “The Blues Don’t Lie,” which earned him his 15th Grammy nomination (he so far has won eight), and in February set out on his extensive Damn Right Farewell Tour. Dates this spring and summer take him across the U.S. and to Brazil, Canada and several blues festivals in Europe.

Born in Lettsworth in Pointe Coupee Parish, Guy learned to play the guitar at a young age and cut his teeth in the mid-1950s in Baton Rouge, learning from watching Louisiana blues greats like Slim Harpo, Raful Neal and Lightnin’ Hopkins. But Chicago called to Guy, and he headed north in 1957. He quickly made a name for himself as a session musician on Chess Records, but by the ’60s and ’70s was standing out by his own name.

he’s still raising up the next generation of blues players, like Christone “Kingfish” Ingram. Along with his Grammy wins and the Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award, Guy has been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, recognized by Kennedy Center Honors and received the Golden Plate Award from the American Academy of Achievement, given to him by guitarist Jimmy Page.

LEON BRIDGES HAS A VOICE that’s somehow clean and impossibly smoky at the same time. On his albums, it cuts through a gauzy production of drifting guitar chords, like an earnest lover speaking to you through a dream.

Bridges has earned comparisons to the great Sam Cooke. And it’s not too far of a stretch, especially given the 33-year-old’s insistence on inhabiting 1960s retro soul, right down to his clothes. Also like Cooke, Bridges gleans his rhythm and blues styling from church music.

“Coming Home” was his breakthrough hit on the 2015 album of the same name, but perhaps “River” from the same album has had the most staying power. His latest EP, “Texas Sun,” released in 2020, was a tidy partnership with funk/psychadelic/surf rock band Khruangbin, showing that he’s not just going to be boxed into retro mid-century.

various venues, crowds responded to the New Orleans-based band enthusiastically. A few happy tears were shed.

“Connecting with people afterwards, it was one of the most emotionally powerful moments of my life,” says vocalist Annalisa Kelly.

Blato Zlato — vocalists Kelly and Willa Roberts; accordionist and vocalist Lou Carrig; violinist Amelia Clingman; bassist Janie Cowan; and drummer Boyanna Trayanova — performs Eastern European-style folk music and has a particular emphasis on Bulgarian folk songs and their own interpretations. The band also writes originals in Bulgarian while weaving in lyrical subject matter familiar to those living in South Louisiana.

The group has been praised for its beautiful vocal harmonies, flying above a mix of pounding drums and swelling, ethereal accordion and violin. There was surprise among Bulgarian audiences to find out most of the band members were not Bulgarian, Trayanova says.

Trayanova is the only Blato Zlato member from Bulgaria — her family emigrated to the U.S. when she was a child — and other band members are from or have lived in various European countries. They came together in New Orleans over a love for Balkans music.

Audiences on their European tours in 2018 and 2019 welcomed Blato Zlato, and the band has learned seeing outsiders interpret and play traditional music in fresh ways inspired young audience members to reconnect with Bulgarian folk traditions. The communist government in the 20th century had nationalized Bulgarian folk music, Trayanova says, which had the effect of turning people away from the traditional works.

had performed together over the years, mingling Acadian and Celtic sounds, but recent tragedies forged a permanent bond between the groups.

In January 2022, The East Pointers banjo player Koady Chaisson died at the age of 37.

Then just months later, in April 2022, Vishten singer and multi-instrumentalist Pastelle LeBlanc died at 42.

After the losses, the remaining four musicians began playing music together and decided to officially band together — their name including the members of the new band plus paying tribute to the two members who passed.

The groups hail from the Prince Edward Island region, an area where Acadians were expelled by the British in the 1700s — including 3,000 people who landed in Louisiana. Vishten’s music is built on Acadian strings and accordion music not unlike those of the transplanted Cajuns. As 6 Hearts, the group has rock ‘n’ roll energy and a contemporary sound.

ON THEIR LATEST ALBUM, “HEAVY LIFTING,” New Orleans roots rockers Loose Cattle intertwined Dolly Parton’s classic “Jolene” with CeeLo Green’s defiant take on heartbreak, “Fuck You.” Jolene, please don’t take my man, but if he happens to leave, y’all can both get bent. While the band usually sticks to boot-stompin’ originals, the fiddle- and banjo-powered mashup is indicative of Loose Cattle’s fun, whirling approach to Americana.

Singer Kimberly Kaye and singer-guitarist Michael Cerveris started Loose Cattle close to 15 years ago, and the group today also includes bassist Rene Coman, drummer Doug Garrison and fiddler Rurik Nunan.

While the group has produced several singles, a live album and a holiday record, “Heavy Lifting,” released in June 2021, was Loose Cattle’s first studio recorded full-length.

The band is now working on its follow-up, spending the winter months recording at Dockside Studio in Maurice and Marigny Studio.

They hope to release the album later this summer but gave listeners a teaser in April with their latest single, their interpretation of Lucinda Williams’ “Crescent City.”

Anchored by Nunan and guest musician Louis Michot’s fiddling, “Crescent City” is a loving, nostalgic trip to New Orleans, and along with Michot, the track features organ playing by Jay Gonzalez of DriveBy Truckers.

Loose Cattle’s appearance on the Lagniappe Stage will be the band’s first time at Jazz Fest. — Jake Clapp

Thursday, May 4 DAVID BATIST E AND THE GLADIATORS 1:30-2:25 P.M. THURSDAY CONGO SQUARE STAGE One of the original funk rock bands of New Orleans, David Batiste and the Gladiators have been playing since 1962 when Batiste first formed the group. The Batiste family is of course one of the leading clans in New Orleans’ music, ranging from David and his brother Michael to David’s son Russell and his nephew Jon. It’s little wonder that they’ve been called the First Family of New Orleans music, and Gladiator shows are a literal showcase of that talent.

David Batiste and the Gladiators helped define the New Orleans funk sound in the 1960 and ’70s, including with major hits including the classic “Funky Soul Parts One and Two.” Of late their shows have mixed that classic sound with jazz, rock, R&B and even country and Cajun songs, and their shows are always a high energy family affair.

DURAND JONES 2:10-3:20 P.M. THURSDAY GENTILLY STAGE Though born in New Orleans, Durand Jones grew up in Ascension Parish and got interested in music playing the saxophone. It wasn’t until after he graduated from college and was living in Indiana that he switched his focus to singing.

His group, Durand Jones and The Indications, gained attention just over a decade ago as part of the soul revival and released their first album in 2018.

In the last year, Jones has focused on his solo career. His first solo album, “Wait Til I Get Over,” will be released May 5. It’s a very personal project with songs about growing up in Louisiana, and it mixes soul, R&B, rock and folk. This Jazz Fest set is part of a brief tour in support of the album. Jones also celebrates the album release at a show at Three Keys at the Ace Hotel at 9 p.m. Thursday. — Will Coviello

ASTRAL PROJECT 2:40-3:40 P.M. THURSDAY WWOZ JAZZ TENT Founded in 1978 by saxophonist Tony Dagradi, for more than 40 years Astral Project has been considered one of New Orleans’ premier modern jazz groups. In addition to Dagradi, the band also includes drummer Johnny Vidacovich, bassist James Singleton and guitarist Steve Masakowski and blends rock, funk and world music with jazz. While modern jazz can occasionally veer into indulgent noodle territory and the low energy vibe of a dentist office’s soundtrack, Astral Project never does either, blending music exploration and smoothed out rhythms in a way that’s neither too cerebral nor ever boring.

The band has produced numerous records over the years, including their “Live in New Orleans” record which showcases the band’s unique blend of genres. — John Stanton

Snotty Nosed Rez Kids and the Northern Cree Singers.

Shub’s music mixes Moombahton, dubstep and other electronic beats with samples of indigenous music and singers to create a driving, powerful beat that perfectly blends these traditional and new sounds. Like other First Nations musicians, Shub’s music is also explicitly political, and the MCs he works with provide pointed, socially conscious rhymes about life for native peoples, the oppression they have dealt with from the U.S. and Canadian governments and other issues.

His War Club record, released in 2020, is a rollicking, hard driving album, blending Shub’s Powwowstep with hip-hop, R&B, dub and reggaeton and is sure to be one of the standout events of this year’s festival.

Corey Ledet is dedicating his talents to keeping Creole and zydeco traditions alive and has drawn two Grammy nominations in recent years. Though raised in Houston, Ledet relocated to South Louisiana because his family is from there, and his Creole heritage has always influenced his way of life and music.

He’s a talented multi-instrumentalist who plays accordion, drums, washboard, bass and rhythm guitar, and the fiddle — plus he sings in both English and in Kouri-Vini, a distinct Creole dialect of St. Martin Parish. Notable influences include Clifton Chenier, John Delafose and Boozoo Chavis. — Sarah Ravits

DJ SHUB PRESENTS WAR CLUB LIVE 4:25-5:35 P.M. THURSDAY JAZZ AND HERITAGE STAGE Ontario’s DJ Shub has been dubbed the Godfather of Powwowstep. Shub, a Mohawk of the Six Nations of the Grand River, is part of a growing First Nations electronic and hip-hop movement that also includes Jazz Fest semi-regulars Halluci Nation, formerly A Tribe Called Red (of which Shub was a member until 2014). Shub has worked with some of a who’s who of indigenous musicians, including

5:20-7 P.M. THURSDAY FESTIVAL STAGE Born in Jalisco, Mexico, in 1947, Carlos Santana has helped define — and continuously redefine — Latin rock and other genres. Over his nearly half-century career, Santana has won two Grammy awards, a Latin Grammy, is a Kennedy Center Honoree, won the VH1 Person of the Year award in 2000 and even has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Santana came of age as a musician in San Francisco after moving to the Bay Area. Shortly after arriving, he began playing music and became heavily influenced by the hippie and psychedelic rock scene. Known then as the Santana Blues Band, his group quickly made a name for themselves playing at the legendary Fillmore with the likes of The Who and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band.

Their debut album, “Santana,” came out in 1969, and it was their set at Woodstock later that year that helped put them on the international stage. Over the decades, Santana has blended a mix of his own songs with Latin pieces, including Willie Bobo’s classic “Evil Ways” and Tito Puente’s iconic “Oye Como Va.” In addition to leading his own band, Santana has also played with some of the biggest names in music, including Rob Thomas, Dave Matthews, Lauryn Hill and CeeLo Green and Mana.

1:50-2:45 P.M. THURSDAY LAGNIAPPE STAGE Papa Mali might be the hardest working man in Jazz Fest. He’s got not one, not two, not six, but 10 shows and counting announced over the two weeks of the festival, including two at the Fair Grounds: a set Thursday afternoon with his Papa Mali Trio at 4:15 and as part of Shantytown Underground.

What is Shantytown Underground, you ask? Before dancehall, before dub and before reggae there was rocksteady. Acting as something of a bridge between ska and reggae, the albeit short-lived style of Jamaican music blended rock, soul, R&B, jazz, ska and Caribbean music in a catchy, highly danceable form of music that for two years dominated the island’s music scene.

Rocksteady sounds very much of the era it was born in, with the sort of themes that were dominant in mid-1960s soul and R&B particularly, but with a Jamaican feel.

Slightly slower in tempo than ska, rocksteady helped birth much of Jamaica’s most famous music, from lovers’ rock to the traditional reggae most people are familiar with.

and jazz saxophonist. Harrison reached out to Alexander and the two have been discussing “quantum improvisation” and “quantum jazz” — a concept Harrison first touched on with his 2012 album by the same name.

“It gives you a better peek into the infinite possibilities [of music],” Harrison says. “There’s so many people around the world coming up with different ideas, and there’s so many ways of thinking, and everybody’s trying to find the answers. We’re doing the same thing with music, trying to find the answers.”

Harrison is exploring this concept on his new work, “Congo Square Suite,” the name a nod to the crucial impact the site has had on music history. The multi-movement piece — which features drummer Joe Dyson, pianist Zaccai Curtis, bassist Max Moran, percussionist Bruce

Jackson and more — opens with an African-style chant.

“I use the way we play music derived from Congo Square now in chants, and also I studied a lot of African field recordings and things I was told by elders in the culture,” Harrison says.

As the suite moves into its second movement, the chants fade out and a grand classical piece begins, performed by the Moscow Symphony Orchestra, with which Harrison worked in 2015. “I put my experiences inside of the culture as the Big Chief of Congo Square [Nation] into a classical setting,” Harrison says.

In the third movement, a jazz quartet is added over a loop of the orchestra. “So you’ll hear it where I took all of those elements and turn it into a fresh new way to look at modern jazz through all of these prisms,” Harrison says.

The “Congo Square Suite” will be available online starting April 28. The piece may be difficult to replicate on the Jazz Festival stage, but Harrison will be performing a set of his other works at 3 p.m.

Friday on the Congo Square Stage.

He also will lead a performance by high school students who took part in an after-school jazz program on Thursday in the WWOZ Jazz Tent.

And Harrison will make an appearance with The Headhunters after the festival on Wednesday, May 3, at NOLA Brewing.

“The thing about an electron, it’s everywhere at once until a person chooses to see it, then you’ve captured it in that moment,” Harrison says. “When you study a lot of music, then you have everything inside of you to choose what that music is at that certain point.”

Last year, the St. Augustine and NOCCA alum performed at President Joe Biden’s first state dinner and won five Grammys, including Album of the Year for 2021’s “We Are,” which featured St. Aug’s Marching 100 band, Trombone Shorty and Hot 8 Brass Band. And he won another Grammy for his work on the soundtrack to the 2020 Pixar film “Soul.”

Biden also recently appointed him to his Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, which includes the likes of Lady Gaga, George Clooney and Shonda Rhimes. In February, Batiste released “The Light Shines Brightest in the Dark” for the soundtrack of the mystery film “Marlowe,” which he recorded

live to reel-to-reel tape to give it an old-school feel.

Additionally, Batiste has appeared on songs on both indie pop darlings Maggie Rogers’ and Lana Del Rey’s albums in the past year, and he’s starring in the film remake of “The Color Purple,” slated for release in December.

But with all the professional success Batiste has had over the last few years, there have also been intense struggles as his wife, author Suleika Jaouad, goes through cancer treatment.

ACROSS HIS ACCLAIMED CAREER, Big Chief Donald Harrison Jr. has composed in numerous styles of music.

He’s combined genres and broken them apart. He’s invented them, too.

But in his newest pieces, Harrison is focused on a coalesced music concept, a unified theory.

“I’ve always been a person who wants to understand multiple forms of music, multiple ideas of what you can do with music,” Harrison says.

“All of that work has led me to what I perceive is a different paradigm.”

He’s played with more than 200 masters — Fred Wesley, Pee Wee Ellis, Ron Carter, Miles Davis, Leo Nocentelli — and in all kinds of genres, from Afro-Cuban and Brazilian styles to hip-hop. Harrison himself was named an NEA Jazz Master last year. And he’s mentored musicians like a young Notorious

“I’ve come to the conclusion that all of us are doing the same thing,” Harrison says. “We’re using the same ingredients. We’re all using the same notes, the rhythms. All elements of anything you can do with music are the same. But it’s just still your personal understanding of music, your experiences coupled with your natural talent that gives you particular ideas.”

“Now, here’s the convoluted part,” he adds with a laugh. Harrison is looking at music through the prism of quantum physics, the study of nature at its most minute level. He was reading about quantum physics and saw correlations to music in various aspects, and he became familiar with the work of Stephon Alexander, a theoretical physicist

But this year, the Kenner native and former “Late Show with Stephen Colbert” bandleader returns to the Fair Grounds following a banner 2022.

ASHLIN PARKER STARTED TRUMPET MAFIA A decade ago as a collective

of horn enthusiasts who initially got together to improve their skills, share techniques and keep each other motivated.

In the late mornings, this informal group of musicians would meet at Parker’s apartment, practice for several hours and then disperse for their various evening gigs along Frenchmen Street and at other clubs.

Parker explained in an interview with Salon 726, a blog produced

by Preservation Hall, that the group initially didn’t think of themselves as a performance group until they started flash-mobbing at friends’ gigs after a few months of rehearsing together.

“It was a lot of moving parts and a lot of personalities,” he said.

But the group, which sometimes includes up to 20 or more players, has kept its structure simple, which Parker says leaves room for plenty of improvisation. Some members rehearse on their own, and then see what happens when they get together. The result is a raw, spontaneous energy that captivates audiences.

Trumpet Mafia has been playing Jazz Fest since 2015, and the group also performs at events like the French Quarter Fest and Satchmo Summerfest. In recent years the artists also have brought New Orleans brass music to the international stage at JazzAscona in Switzerland. Parker teaches at Tulane University, so part of his mission is to spread jazz worldwide and mentor the next generation of musicians.

Parker says he doesn’t want to spend too much time defining the group or its genre. Some tunes are heavily rooted in traditional New Orleans jazz, but the group also plays hip-hop, R&B and rap.

the smiles on everyone’s faces and how the music just kind of brought people together and created a happy atmosphere, that’s the most indelible impression that I carry with me.”

Since those days, King has had a successful blues career and made a foray into acting. In the early 2000s, he played blues guitarists in both “Ray” and “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” He also sang Skip James’ “Hard Time Killing Floor Blues” on the latter film’s soundtrack, which won a Grammy for Album of the Year in 2002.

In 2021, King released his first book “The Blues: The Authentic Narrative of My Music and Culture.”

In it, he makes the case that blues was born in South Louisiana rather than northern Mississippi, citing musicians like Buddy Bolden, King Oliver and Jelly Roll Morton.

“There’s no truth to the fact that blues came from work songs or slave songs,” King asserts. “Blues is a high art music that came out in New Orleans ... They called it ‘West End Blues,’ ‘Basin Street Blues,’ the ‘Jelly Roll Blues.’ All the New Orleans musicians called their music the blues.”

“I want Louisiana to celebrate the fact that this music comes from us,” he adds.

King has played Jazz Fest since the ’70s, when he’d play as a kid alongside his father.

professionally for half a century, going back to paid gigs he’d do in Baton Rouge at the ripe old age of 9.

The son of the late musician Tabby Thomas, King grew up immersed in the blues. When King was a teenager, in 1979, his father opened Tabby’s Blues Box and Heritage Hall, a club where King played nightly for 15 years. “Our family business was the blues,” he says.

King remembers those days at the club, where people would dance the night away. “They would dance until they were just sweaty and just worn out,” he says. “People danced for like four hours straight in that place to the wee hours of the morning. Just

The original group consisted of the seven Jackson brothers, who are natives of Centreville, Mississippi, but relocated to New Orleans to share their worship music. FRIDAY JAZZ & HERITAGE STAGE Baton Rouge-based Mariachi Jalisco keeps the Mexican tradition of mariachi music alive with soulful performances. Led by Eider Martinez, the group performs at festivals and special events including weddings and other big celebrations around South Louisiana. COLTRANE LEGACY FEAT. TONY DAGRADI AND TREVARRI HUFF-BOONE

Bandleader of the folk-rock-pop group Hurray for the Riff Raff, Alynda Segarra will pay homage to their Puerto Rican roots in the Cultural Exchange Pavilion. Ethereal and earthy, Segarra sings frequently of hardships including lost love and political oppression.

As a teenager, the Bronx native hopped trains and ended up in New Orleans, and many of Hurray for the Riff Raff’s earlier songs reflected the itinerant lifestyle.

But that was 15 years ago, and Segarra has changed.

Segarra described the group’s latest album, 2022’s “Life on Earth,” as “nature punk,” reflecting how Segarra found healing and hope from oppressive policies by finding peace in the natural world. Pitchfork wrote that Segarra in recent years has “never sounded more honest or self-possessed.”

Lily Keber will interview Segarra at 4 p.m. on the Allison Miner Music Heritage Stage. Hurray for the Riff Raff performs on the Gentilly Stage at 3:45 p.m. Saturday, May 6. — Sarah Ravits

MOLLY TUT TLE & GOLDEN HIGHWAY 4:15-5:35 P.M. FRIDAY SHERATON FAIS DO-DO STAGE Multi-instrumentalist Molly Tuttle says she wants to break boundaries with her music. A native of northern California, Tuttle was born into a musical family and got into bluegrass at an early age, thanks to her banjo-playing grandfather and her music teacher dad.

Big Chief Juan is a charismatic bandleader who interacts with his audiences and has jokingly warned fans that he cannot be held personally responsible for injuries sustained by those enthusiastically dancing to the group’s music. — Sarah Ravits

CHRISTIAN MCBRIDE’S NEW JAWN 5:45-7 P.M. FRIDAY WWOZ JAZZ TENT

ANDRE BOHREN & THE ELECTRIC YAT ORCHESTRA 4:15-5 P.M. FRIDAY KIDS TENT Dedicated fans of Johnny Sketch and the Dirty Notes will recognize the electro-funk group’s versatile drummer Andre Bohren, who joins the Electric Yat Quartet for a performance of “Peter & The Wolf” in the Kids Tent. For this set, Bohren steps away from the drum kit to show off his classical piano skills.

The quartet features violinists Harry Hardin and Natalia Cascante, cellist Jack Craft (who is also a member of the Francophone indie-pop band Sweet Crude) and viola player Amelia Clingman. Though the set is geared toward a younger audience, adult music fans will also appreciate this refreshing, energetic take on the symphonic fairy tale. — Sarah Ravits

BIG CHIEF JUAN AND JOCKIMO’S GROOVE 6:15-7 P.M. FRIDAY JAZZ & HERITAGE STAGE Big Chief Juan Pardo is a regular at Jazz Fest and released a live album from a festival set in 2015. Jockimo’s Groove, which formed over a decade ago, incorporates elements of funk, psychedelia and Latin American beats with traditional Mardi Gras Indian chants. They also put a unique spin on covers by classic R&B artists like Marvin Gaye.

Bassist Christian McBride has followed an accomplished and busy career, from hard bop ensembles to a swinging big band, and he’s picked up eight Grammy awards along the way. He’s recorded with top jazz musicians across generations, and he’s worked with Questlove and Billie Eilish.

He’s also no stranger to festivals and is the artistic director of the Newport Jazz Festival.

This show focuses on his New Jawn project — incorporating slang from his native Philadelphia for a hip new thing. In 2018, he released a studio album titled “New Jawn,” recorded with saxophonist Marcus Strickland, trumpeter Josh Evans and drummer Nasheet Waits. The adventurous group veers from abstraction and strains of Ornette Coleman to funk and soulful sounds.

McBride will be interviewed by Ashley Kahn at 3 p.m. at the Allison Miner Music Heritage Stage.

1:30-2:30 P.M. FRIDAY WWOZ JAZZ TENT Saxophonists Tony Dagradi and Trevarri Huff-Boone pay tribute to the legendary John Coltrane, who has influenced both of them throughout their musical careers.

Huff-Boone, a Shreveport native, has been playing the saxophone since he was 8 years old and released his first album at 17. He has performed with the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra and The Dirty Dozen Brass Band and a number of local musicians, including members of the Marsalis family.

Saxophone virtuoso Dagradi is a Loyola professor of jazz studies and leads the modern jazz group Astral Project and regularly performs with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. — Sarah Ravits

The 30-year-old rising star now is based in Nashville and can yodel and pick strings like the best of them. Her Grammy-winning 2022 album “Crooked Tree” features some big-name collaborators, including Margo Price, Gillian Welch, Billy Strings (who was once her roommate) and members of Old Crow Medicine Show, among others.

On some tracks, Tuttle emphasizes the hardships of being a woman and finding self-acceptance despite not fitting into a mold. “Can’t you see, a crooked tree won’t fit into the mill machine?/ They’re left to grow wild and free/ I’d rather be a crooked tree” she croons in the album’s title track.

DEE DEE BRIDGEWATER IS A CONSUMMATE ARTIST. When Gambit reached her by

quartet,” Bridgewater says. “So it really depends, literally, on the gig itself.”

Over her 50-year-career as a vocalist, Bridgewater has built a seemingly boundless repertoire that goes wherever she wants. Along with albums of originals and interpretations of standards, she has recorded tribute albums to Silver, Billie Holiday — for which Bridgewater won her third Grammy Award — and Duke Ellington.

Her most recent album, the soulful “Memphis… Yes, I’m Ready,” reinterpreted soul and blues classics in dedication to her birthplace. And many New Orleanians know her 2015 album, “Dee Dee’s Feathers,” recorded with Irvin Mayfield and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra.

Named an NEA Jazz Master in 2017, Bridgewater also is a Tony Award winner, hosted “JazzSet” on NPR for 13 years, and serves as a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador.

Bridgewater last performed at Jazz Fest in 2015 with the Jazz Orchestra. She closed the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation’s Chanteuse Series in 2021 and last year joined Adonis Rose & NOJO at the Ascona Jazz Festival.

In 2017, Bridgewater started The Woodshed Network, a partnership with 651 Arts and supported by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, to provide mentorship, resources and networking for women in jazz. The initiative recently passed its fourth class of musicians.

“What is happening is creating community, so if any of the musicians have issues, they have a community of women to reach out to. Our mentors are part of that community,” Bridgewater says. “I’m just trying to help enlarge the community for women in musical spaces and beyond even.”

In 2017, she released a self-titled album, featuring her hit “Every Kind Of Way” — her smooth vocals and runs sailing over steady beats.

H.E.R. followed that up with the album “I Used to Know Her” in 2019 and 2021’s “Back of My Mind,”which featured DJ Khaled, Ty Dolla $ign, Lil Baby and Cordae among others.

H.E.R., now 25 years old, has already won four Grammys, including one for Song of the Year for 2020’s “I Can’t Breathe” about the police killing of George Floyd and structural racism in America. And she won an Academy Award for Best Original Song for 2021’s “Fight for You” on the “Judas and the Black Messiah” soundtrack.

The Bay Area producer and multi-instrumentalist also has collaborated with a slew of artists spanning different genres, including Daniel Caesar, Bob Marley’s grandson Skip and fellow 2023 Jazz Fest performer Ed Sheeran.

Until recently, H.E.R. concealed much of her identity, saying she wanted people to know and understand her through her music. But playing Belle in the “Beauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration” TV special in December made her decide to shed the sunglasses and officially reveal her identity as Gabriella Wilson — marking a new chapter in her career.

She will make her feature film acting debut in “The Color Purple,” a remake also starring Jon Batiste, which is set to come out in December.

phone two weeks ago, Bridgewater had recently landed back in the U.S. after a long flight from Cape Verde, where she performed at the Kriol Jazz Festival, and had rejoined the Monterey Jazz Festival on Tour the night before for a performance in Roanoke, Virginia.

Ahead of her were a few more dates on the Monterey Jazz Festival tour before heading to San Francisco for four nights at SF Jazz. And then, Bridgewater lands in New Orleans for a Jazz Fest performance Saturday, May 6. Earlier in the day, author Karen Celestan will interview Bridgewater on the Allison Miner Music Heritage Stage.

Each of those performances has featured different lineups and different repertoire. In Cape Verde, Bridgewater performed as a quartet and focused on pieces by pianist Horace Silver, who has Cape Verdean ancestry through his father.

“The people were appreciative,” Bridgewater says. “They said I brought Horace Silver back to Cape Verde.

He never went to Cape Verde, I was surprised to find out. So they were very happy with the show. They were also very excited because we were a quartet of women, and to be in Africa and to be all women, that created quite a stir.”

With the all-star Monterey Jazz Festival on Tour, Bridgewater joined vocalist Kurt Elling, pianist Christian Sands, saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin, bassist Yasushi Nakamura and drummer Clarence Penn. Then she performed as a duo with pianist Bill Charlap in San Francisco.

At the New Orleans Jazz Fest, Bridgewater will front her quartet, but she hasn’t yet settled the repertoire — although, she says, she would like to do a number to honor Silver and Wayne Shorter and include French material.

The Met’s production of Blanchard’s previous opera “Champion,” about professional boxer Emile Griffith, opened in April.

Jazz audiences may be familiar with Blanchard’s music as far back as his early days in Lionel Hampton’s orchestra or Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. But most people have probably heard one of the dozens of film scores he’s composed and performed on. He started working with Spike Lee back in the ’80s and composed his first film “Mo’ Better Blues” in 1990. They’ve collaborated regularly over the years, most recently on “Da 5 Bloods” and “BlacKkKlansman.”

When Lee and his father asked Blanchard to write and conduct a string arrangement for that first movie, “I got out there, and I winged it, man,” Blanchard told Deadline. “I was nervous as hell, and when I finished, Spike walked up to me, and he goes, ‘Man, you got a future in this business.’”

Last year, Blanchard won acclaim, and awards, for his score for the film “The Woman King,” including taking home the top honors for Best Score of a Feature Film at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards, as well as a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for his work on the AppleTV documentary series “They Call Me Magic.”

His 2021 album, “Absence,” features his band The E-Collective and the Turtle Island Quartet, who will both join him for his Jazz Fest set. The album was a nod to one of Blanchard’s mentors, Wayne Shorter, who died in March. “Absence” earned Blanchard two Grammy nominations.

In addition to his show in the WWOZ Jazz Tent, Blanchard also will be interviewed by Charles Burchell at 2 p.m. on the Allison Miner Music Heritage Stage.

Robert Randolph and the Family Band

Randolph is known for his skills as a pedal steel guitarist, vocalist and songwriter. Having spent much of his 4:05-5:15 P.M. SATURDAY childhood in church, BLUES TENT Randolph’s musical style has been significantly shaped by his religious upbringing and his exposure to gospel music.

Randolph plays in the sacred steel tradition, a guitar style developed in the Church of the Living God and other Christian churches in the United States. It brings a unique blues sensibility to gospel and has broadly influenced a PROVIDED PHOTO host of rock, blues and soul musicians.

Born in 1977 in New Jersey, Randolph has pushed his music into genres including rock, funk, soul and jazz, and he has become a regular on the jam band circuit. Randolph’s more recent music, including his debut album “Got Soul” for Sony Masterworks, showcases this fusion of sounds.

Randolph and his band have been nominated for four Grammy awards over their career, while Randolph has established himself as one of the world’s premier guitar players — in 2010, he was named one of Rolling Stone’s 100 greatest guitar players. Randolph also has played with Los Lobos, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Rob Thomas, Buddy Guy, Elton John and Ringo Starr. He’s even performed with Ozzy Ozbourne, a far cry from his church roots.

LEYLA MCCALLA 12:25-1:20 P.M. SATURDAY SHERATON FAIS DO-DO STAGE Folk singer and cellist Leyla McCalla may be from New York City originally, and was a member of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, but it was in New Orleans that she developed her identity as a solo artist.

Busking in the French Quarter, she met the manager of the Carolina Chocolate Drops and joined the North Carolina string-band. When she had down time from touring, McCalla explored the pull toward composition and songwriting she’d always felt, propelling her toward a solo career.

“I was kind of torn between those two things because I never really thought of myself as a singer prior to moving to New Orleans,” she told Gambit last year. “I started singing right before moving, and I felt like it was like a new instrument that I didn’t really know how to use in the way that I use my other instruments.”

McCalla’s parents came to the U.S. from Haiti. McCalla delved into the archives of Radio Haiti, including the assassination of its owner in 2000, to develop her recent album, “Breaking the Thermometer to Hide the Fever.” She released an album and created a theatrical piece based on the project.

McCalla also will be interviewed by radio producer and writer Eve Abrams at 3 p.m. Saturday on the Allison Miner Music Heritage Stage.

ANDERS OSBORNE 1:25-2:30 P.M. SATURDAY FESTIVAL STAGE Americana and blues singer-songwriter Anders Osborne left Sweden at the age of 16 to travel the world playing music. By the 1990s, he’d found his way to New Orleans, and he’s called the city home ever since.

His debut album “Break the Chain” came out in 1994, and he’s put out 13 studio albums since then, most recently “Orpheus and the Mermaids” in 2021. Osborne also has written songs for Tim McGraw and Keb’ Mo’, including tracks on the latter’s Grammy-winning album “Slow Down.”

After touring fervently for the last several decades, the pandemic forced Osborne to take a break, and he says he plans to spend less time on the road going forward.

Following the fest on Friday and Saturday, Osborne will open for North Carolina folk rock band The Avett Brothers during their twonight run at Saenger Theatre.

DEACON JOHN 2:40-3:40 P.M. SATURDAY BLUES TENT New Orleans R&B and rock ’n’ roll icon Deacon John Moore has been playing Jazz Fest since it started and has watched it grow from its modest start in Congo Square to the giant production in the Fair Grounds it is today.

Like so many of the city’s greats, Moore hails from a musical family and grew up singing in church.

GABRIELLE CAVASSA 2:50-3:35 P.M. SATURDAY AARP RHYTHMPOURIUM As a kid growing up in the suburbs of San Diego, Gabrielle Cavassa’s introduction to jazz was her grandpa playing Frank Sinatra and her parents’ jazz Christmas album featuring Nancy Wilson and Ella Fitzgerald.

In college, she dove headfirst into jazz — researching the history, studying the records and attending live shows. After visiting New Orleans, she knew she wanted to move to the city and continue learning about jazz, so she did just that in 2017.

Since then, the now 28-yearold has toured as a vocalist with the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra and tied as the winner of the 2021 International Sarah Vaughan Jazz Vocal Competition.

Cavassa’s 2020 single “Inside My Arms” with Boston saxophonist Braxton Cook off her self-titled album has amassed more than half a million streams on Spotify. Her next album, slated to come out this year, will feature pianist Ryan Hanseler and strings. She says it will be more emotionally heavy and draw from her Italian roots.

DEAD & COMPANY 4:30-7 P.M. SATURDAY FESTIVAL STAGE In 2015, surviving members of the Grateful Dead teamed up with singer and guitarist John Mayer, Allman Brothers’ bassist Oteil Burbridge, and Fare Thee Well series and RatDog keyboardist Jeff Chimenti to form an unlikely offshoot of the iconic rock band.

The inclusion of Mayer, 45, in a group with the Grateful Dead’s Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann and Bob Weir, now in their 70s, may seem like an odd fit. But the Grateful Dead’s music informed

Mayer’s, particularly his albums 2012’s “Born and Raised” and 2013’s “Paradise Valley.”

Over the years, they’ve released a slew of live albums of Grateful Dead songs. The group announced this year’s tour will be its last, but Kreutzmann left the group last week.

THE LUMINEERS 5:20-7 P.M. SATURDAY SHELL GENTILLY STAGE The Denver indie folk rockers are basically synonymous with the acoustic guitar, claps and chants of their 2012 single “Ho Hey.” It was a good introduction to the rest of their self-titled album, which makes listeners want to pick wildflowers and warm up by the fire.

“Ophelia,” the single off their 2016 follow-up album, “Cleopatra,” was nearly as big of a success as “Ho Hey.” Another slow song starting with claps, both have amassed almost a billion streams on Spotify each.

Singer and pianist Wesley Schultz and drummer Jeremiah Fraites told iHeartRadio last year that the pandemic-induced hiatus from touring helped them recalibrate and forced them to get out of the grind of making an album, touring and quickly working on the next album.

In 2022, the band released its latest album “BRIGHTSIDE,” and this Jazz Fest set is one of the last U.S. stops before the group heads to Europe in June.

KEB’ MO’ 5:45-7 P.M. SATURDAY BLUES TENT Though from Los Angeles, bluesman Keb’ Mo’s father is from the tiny town of Heflin in north Louisiana, and the Grammy-winning singer’s music fits into New Orleans well.

The 71-year-old started off playing steel drums in a calypso band but these days the guitar is where he shines, whether it’s electric, acoustic or a resonator — and especially if it’s red.

Keb’ Mo’ has been putting out albums consistently since the ’90s.

He released his latest album, “Good To Be…,” in 2022. Featuring songs with Darius Rucker, Vince Gill and Kristin Chenoweth, the album pays homage to Compton, California, where he grew up.

“The Medicine Man,” an acoustic track on the album, meditates on the pandemic, politics and climate change. “The whole damn world is singin’ the blues,” he sings.

SATURDAY CONGO SQUARE STAGE After making music and releasing several live albums over the last 15 years, bounce king HaSizzle released his first studio EP, “Hey Friend,” last fall, chock full of studio versions of songs his fans, including the likes of Drake and Lil Nas X, have been loving for years.

His song “Getcha Sum” with Anjelika “Jelly” Joseph is a staple on many New Orleans party playlists, and the track has taken over the city in recent years. For fans of that song, “Hey Friend” includes two more songs with Joseph, “Wine” and “Fya.” HaSizzle is known for his high-energy performances where he twerks on stage. As he told Gambit in

nicknamed him “Deacon,” or maybe it was his clean-cut look.

Moore and The Ivories were the house band at the Dew Drop Inn in the ’50s, and after Allen Toussaint heard him perform there, he got Moore in the studio to play on hits from Lee Dorsey, Aaron Neville, Ernie K-Doe, Irma Thomas and others.

During the height of the British Invasion, he shifted gears to rock.

He didn’t put out an album under his own name until “Singer of Song” in 1990, and he started to focus on jump blues.

“All my life I’ve been hard to put a label on,” Moore told Gambit in 2017. “Maybe it’s best they don’t have a label on me.”

KANSAS ROCKER MELISSA ETHERIDGE made a name for herself in the ’80s and ’90s, releasing two of her biggest hits, “I’m The Only One” and “Come to My Window,” within the span of one year.

The iconic growl in Etheridge’s voice is present as she sings the chorus in both. “Come To My Window” earned her second Grammy for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance after she won for “Ain’t It Heavy” in 1993. The former was the first song she released after publicly coming out as lesbian, and by proxy it became somewhat of a gay anthem.

Growing up in the ’60s and ’70s, Etheridge was surrounded by activism and has been a champion for LGBTQ rights and climate issues throughout her life. In 2020, her son, Beckett died from an opioid addiction, and her Etheridge Foundation researches alternative forms of pain relief.

NEW ORLEANS-BORN DRUMMER AND COMPOSER JOE DYSON has performed and recorded with Big Chief Donald Harrison Jr., Nicholas Payton, Chief Xian aTunde Adjuah and Dr. Lonnie Smith. In 2021, he released his debut solo album, “Look Within,” recorded with top tier New Orleans-based musicians saxophonist Gladney, trumpeter Steven Lands, pianist Oscar Rossignoli and bassist Jasen Weaver.

“Look Within” is an encouraging exploration of the human spirit and spirituality — arriving amid the chaos and pain of the pandemic, when words of encouragement were needed. Through Black American Music and samples of sermons by J.C. Dyson Sr. (Joe Dyson’s father) and Louis Farrakhan, Dyson sought to learn more about personal strength, faith and doubt.

Along with his set Sunday in the WWOZ Jazz Tent, Dyson can be found this week at Tipitina’s for the Zildjian 400th Anniversary celebration on May 2; opening for Harrison on May 5 at Sweet Lorraine’s; and on May 6, performing with Jesse McBride at Jazz Fest and playing with Harrison at Snug Harbor later that day. — Jake Clapp

Along with her songwriting, Redbone also is an educator, using music to teach about Native American traditions and the heavy history of displacement, eradication and erasure. Recently, Redbone and her husband, Aaron Whitby, developed “Bone Hill: The Concert,” a multi-disciplinary theater work based in Redbone’s familial history in Kentucky.

WHEN SINGER-SONGWRITER SABINE MCCALLA’S DRUMMER Tif Lamson (of the band GIVERS) went on tour last year with Peaches, McCalla turned to her multi-instrumentalist friend Sam Doores to back her as a percussionist for local gigs. The two friends realized how well they worked together, and their musical partnership has blossomed to become a permanent thing, McCalla says.

“It was absolutely an important time, not only in politics and society and the changes that were happening, but also, of course, music and how much that music was associated with those changes,” she told Spin in March.

For her latest album, 2021’s “One Way Out,” Etheridge re-recorded songs she wrote starting in the late ’80s with her original band. Some of them, she told American Songwriter in 2021, were feminist tracks she was worried about putting on the album at the time. “I was a different human being with a different brain back then,” she said.

Etheridge, now 61, has been married to actress Linda Wallem since 2014. She says being in a healthy romantic relationship lets her sing heartbreak songs from a new place. In her forthcoming music, she’ll capture the rock angst with other sorrows, both hers and those of others.

“The part of my heart and soul that I write from now is older, wiser … but I’m still rock and roll,” she told American Songwriter.

McCalla was born to Haitian parents and grew up in New Jersey.

She, like her older sister, cellist Leyla McCalla, took to string instruments at an early age. Sabine McCalla was always drawn to folk songs and learned guitar, and she wrote poetry while attending college in North Carolina and was inspired by Appalachian balladry.

In recent years, she has been packing in crowds on weekends at intimate and experimental venues like BJ’s Lounge and the Music Box Village. Her soothing, soulful and sometimes playful stage presence has garnered her many new fans and new collaborators.

Doores, who was a founding member of Hurray for the Riff Raff, also performs with The Deslondes — which perform at 2:50 p.m.

Sunday on the Lagniappe Stage — The Tumbleweeds, and as a solo artist. He also brings artists together for songwriting showcases at places like the The Tigermen Den. At their Jazz Fest set, McCalla will sing and play guitar while Doores plays piano, keyboard and drums. McCalla says she hopes audiences will come away with a “sense of the strong kinship” between the two folk artists.

“I like to sing about love and my experiences,” she says.

Dominican Republic, and grew up studying music and learning the folk traditions of his home country, including merengue. A guitarist, accordionist, pianist and singer, Ceballos went on to study music at the University of Santo Domingo and teach music and culture in the national school system.

In spring 2012, Ceballos and his wife moved to New Orleans, and the Afro-Dominican musician began to explore the local music community. He has since played with a number of musicians and taught lessons on Latin and Caribbean music through local organizations.

Ceballos also leads the band Merengue4Four, performing Afro-Caribbean styles such as merengue, bachata and vallenato, a Latin genre from the Caribbean coast of Colombia.

In 2021 Ceballos released his debut album, “Bochinche.” The record showcases the music styles Ceballos has played throughout his life, while adding distinctly south Louisiana touches throughout. For instance, “Zydeco Star,” a collaboration with Rockin’ Dopsie Jr., is a standout on the record and rollicking Afro-Caribbean spin on zydeco that’s sure to get you on your feet. — Jake Clapp

SUNDAY LAGNIAPPE STAGE Saucy frontwoman Dayna Kurtz leads the New Orleans band that is named for her loveable mutt, Lulu, who often accompanies her to local barroom gigs and is a diva in her own right. Fans of ASMR take note: Kurtz’s smoldering vocals are known to send shivers up spines (in that good, raw, bluesy way).

The talented band includes James Singleton on upright bass, Glenn Hartman on keys, Robert Mache on guitar, and drummer Randy Crafton, filling the spot formerly held by Carlo Nuccio, who passed away last year. The group will play original material off its self-titled 2022 album, along with obscure, sexy blues tracks and straight-up rock-and-roll. “It’s dirty dancing music,” Kurtz told Gambit. “It’s grimy and sexy, and we like it that way.” — Sarah Ravits

SUNDAY LAGNIAPPE STAGE Sam Doores leads The Deslondes, a group that came together in the Holy Cross neighborhood of New Orleans’ 9th Ward and took its name from a nearby street. Some of its members, like Doores, had played in Hurray for the Riff Raff and in The Tumbleweeds.

The group pulls from a variety of roots music influences, incorporating country, folk, gospel and R&B in original compositions. In 2022, the group released “Ways and Means,” a follow-up to 2017’s “Hurry Home.” — Sarah Ravits

The group formed in 2004 upon the graduation of many of the members from Brother Martin High School. Their most popular song over the years is “You Know What It’s About,” featuring Mannie Fresh. Fresh also produced the group’s 2017 album “Boss,” which the track appears on.

Flow Tribe is currently working on a new album, which will be the group’s first since 2020’s “Loteria Cosmica.” And if their March single “Freak” is any indication, it’s sure to be catchy.

THE FLATLANDERS 5:40 P.M.-7 P.M. SUNDAY SHERATON FAIS DO-DO STAGE With more than 50 years under their belt buckles since they formed in Lubbock, Texas, in the 1970s, The Flatlanders are proud of the twang in their music. The original band had a little more honky-tonking in their country sound. But the band struggled and split up after a few years. But after members Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Joe Ely and Butch Hancock found success on their own, they got the Flatlanders back together.

The group has hit its stride with the rise of Americana and continues to write new music. The band recorded and released the album “Treasure of Love” during the pandemic. — Will Coviello

3:35-5:05 P.M. SUNDAY FESTIVAL STAGE This won’t be Mumford & Sons first rodeo at Jazz Fest. The London folk rockers played the festival in 2011, right around the time their hits “Little Lion Man” and “The Cave” were peaking in popularity.

Riding that wave, they released their sophomore album “Babel” in 2012, featuring their smash hit “I Will Wait,” and it won them Album of the Year at the Grammys. But rather than continue the grind, the group took a five-month hiatus to rest before working on its third album.

There’s been some recent uncertainty about the future of the band. Banjoist and guitarist Winston Marshall quit the band after backlash to a tweet in which he called right-wing author Andy Ngo “brave,” and lead singer Marcus Mumford released his debut solo album “(self-titled)” last year. But Mumford told “Today” in November that the band will continue to release new music. — Kaylee Poche

FLOW TRIBE 5:25-6:30 P.M. SUNDAY LAGNIAPPE STAGE The New Orleans funk rockers behind Flow Tribe don’t take themselves too seriously, making their live performances undeniably fun.

Lead singer K.C. O’Rorke is quite the character, and he posts videos of himself on Instagram donning silly wigs and singing songs, including a recent jingle “to set the record straight” about his hometown of Kenner.

Hancock has been promising a new album for several years. It’s said to be produced by Terrace Martin, who often performs in his band. Hancock reached out to younger hip-hop artists including Kendrick Lamar, and reportedly worked with Kumasi Washington and Wayne Shorter (who died in March) on some tracks.

Regardless of how close that project is to completion, Hancock is not against playing his best-known material, such as an extended version of his classic “Watermelon Man” when he played Jazz Fest in 2019.

The 82-year-old singer began cranking out hit after hit in the mid-60s and early ’70s, including tracks that are still heard everywhere today, such as “It’s Not Unusual” and “She’s a Lady.”

Jones over the course of his career has sold over 100 million records, and seduced audiences far and wide. He’s played for U.S. presidents and even been knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his services to music. Even as an octogenarian, Jones is still a charismatic presence on stage, and catching some of his wide-ranging talent live should be on your lastday of Jazz Fest bucket list.

SUNDAY CONGO SQUARE STAGE Audiences might know Ne-Yo from his 2000s hits like “Miss Independent” and “So Sick.” But he’s also a top songwriter who had a turning point in his career when he wrote Mario’s 2005 No. 1 hit “Let Me Love You.” In 2012, Ne-Yo followed that success up with his own single

“Let Me Love You (Until You Learn to Love Yourself).” He also has writing credits on Rihanna’s “Unfaithful” and “Take a Bow” and Beyonce’s “Irreplaceable,” and even wrote songs for Michael Jackson, though Jackson died before he could release them.

Born Shaffer Chimere Smith, the R&B singer got his stage name from the character Neo in “The Matrix.” Last July, he released his album “Self Explanatory,” featuring his signature smooth tenor vocals over steady beats.

“I’m happy that after 15 years, somebody still gives a damn about a Ne-Yo song,” he told Billboard in 2021.

Osteria Lupo opens on Magazine Street | by Beth D’Addono OSTERIA LUPO PASTRY CHEF SARA MARTIN HAS A NEW CALLING . Besides

making a killer saffron pavlova, she is officially a pizza goddess.

The team that opened the Spanish gem Costera on Prytania Street in 2019 has upped the ante with the opening of Osteria Lupo nearby in Uptown. The casually chic restaurant on Magazine Street has been busy since it opened April 5.

Martin was charged with getting the pizza dough right for the rotating menu of “pizze,” which is plural to represent the many flavors that have inspired pizza devotion for centuries. There are two pizzas offered on the compact menu currently, a diavola and one topped with 24-month-aged prosciutto from San Daniele. For spice lovers, the diavola is the ticket.

The pizza crusts are thin but soft, tender, foldable and slightly charred underneath. Chef and co-owner Brian Burns says they experimented for weeks to land on the right hydration to match the humidity in the building. Topped with spicy ’nduja, a spreadable sausage from Calabria flecked with chili, jalapeno slices, whole roasted garlic and a just right layer of fontina, this pizza is the stuff of dreams.

Prosciutto San Daniele, which is sourced only from pigs raised in 10 provinces in north central Italy, adorns the other pie, along with basil and high-quality whole milk mozzarella.

The menu is full of skillfully made original items. Burns is the tastemaker in the kitchen and he works closely with chef de cuisine Evan Churchill. Burns’ business partner Reno De Rani commands the front of the house.

Osteria Lupa gives a wide berth to the many fine Creole Italian eateries around town and draws more from northern Italian ingredients and dishes. House-made pastas are kissed by sauces stripped to their essentials. There’s a vodka sauce spiced with Calabrian chilies and garlic. The carbonara has guanciale, egg and both pecorino and Parmesan. Another cream sauce is

studded with crab. The mushroom ragu exudes earthy goodness from three kinds of fungi.

For the uninitiated, house-made pasta is different from the dry kinds found on store shelves. They invested in the Cadillac of makers, an imported Arcobaleno extruder with bells and whistles and the ability to make fun shapes like radiator and bucatini. Burns calls it “revelatory.”

Dishes from both the list of hot appetizers and the secondi section of the menu benefit from the wood-fired oven situated prominently in a corner of the open kitchen.

Yellowfin tuna, oysters, skewers of skirt steak and charred zucchini, radicchio and broccolini are grilled over crackling wood, absorbing smoke and heat. The main courses fall in the $34-$49 range and are meant to be shared, including a four-bone, three-quarter pound rack of lamb and an 8-ounce beef tenderloin with garlic and rosemary.

Cold appetizers include marinated mushrooms, a shimmering orb of burrata served with aged balsamic and grilled house-made focaccia. A spring salad is tossed with Gorgonzola and fennel.

The bar offers a wide selection of Italian wines, a few Italian beers and cocktails, including two kinds of Negronis.

The 135-seat restaurant occupies what once was the original Elmer’s Chocolate House and later a glass-blowing studio. The new design has sleek, clean lines, periwinkle walls and a white ceiling padded with sound absorbing panels.

The partners, who both previously worked with the Link Restaurant Group, started mulling the idea of an Italian restaurant before the pandemic. Burns says this time around they’ve incorporated some of the

“The biggest one was we had wanted to be too many things,” he says. “We’d both come from a busy restaurant group, but that wasn’t something we could sustain. When we slammed on the brakes with the pandemic, we reopened three, then four nights a week. Every new hire got our full attention. We really got to know one another. We want to build a culture, not just create great food. We’re trying to take it slow.”

For now, they are limiting seatings at Osteria Lupo and focusing on the menu’s essence.

“We learned from Costera that we can’t be completely traditional,” Burns says. “New Orleans chefs and diners have different palates and their own ideas about what’s good.

Our food has a little more acidity, more heat, more herbs. We like it that way.”

should bring an appetite. This year, though, they can leave the cash behind and be ready for a raft of changes in the famously steady-running food options at the fest.

Much more than an amenity around the event, Jazz Fest food is an integral part of the draw and the experience, turning the Fair Grounds into a giant food festival within a music festival. The vendors have become part of the culture and traditions that many people build around the fest.

That means even minute changes to the menu are tracked by hungry aficionados. This year brings a multitude of them, and perhaps some foreshadowing of more to come.

Baked in are higher costs for food and staffing, by now universally recognized across the hospitality sector. There is a population

of vendors who are beloved and long-serving, but also getting up there in years and making decisions about their future. And, overarching it all, is a fundamental change in how all vendors across the festival take payments.

This is the first year Jazz Fest is cashless, joining the mainstream for other large-scale events, but also signaling a distinct change in the way vendors with decades of experience at the festival will now operate.

Festgoers can use cards and digital payment methods (like Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay) and those who arrive with only cash can buy prepaid cards at cash exchange stations inside the festival (where ATMs were previously found). These cards can also be used outside the festival.

In a statement, Jazz Fest officials say they “created a new, private network engineered specifically for and dedicated solely to Jazz Fest business during the event.”

That’s a change from past years, when vendors who accepted cashless payments used their own networks.

Patton’s Catering — the vendor known for its head-turning crawfish sack, oyster patty and crawfish beignet combo plate — runs food booths at other events that have gone cashless.

Erin Merrick, part of the Patton’s family, says given the scale of Jazz Fest, she’s still anxious about the infrastructure to support these payments keeping up. She also recognizes the change is a sign of the times.

“It’s 2023, this is becoming the norm now. You have to have faith going into it that we’ll figure it out on the fly. After all, that’s been our mantra since 2020,” when the pandemic began, she says.

Prices at the stands will be higher this year, in part to offset processing fees from cashless payments. For instance, that Patton’s all-star combo plate is $24 this year, up from $20 last year.

Merrick has seen customer response to these changes vary at other events, including this year’s French Quarter Festival, which accepted cashless payments but also kept a cash option.

“What we saw at French Quarter Fest was a generational divide ...

Younger people are just used to it and understand there’s processing fees on everything and that gets passed down the line,” she says.

Newer vendors are more comfortable with the cashless approach.

The downtown restaurant Carmo had its first full-fledged booth at Jazz Fest last year and returns again this year with Gulf fish tacos, shrimp tacos and other dishes. Last year its booth accepted cashless sales using its own network. This year, Carmo co-owner Dana Honn says he’s much more confident in Jazz Fest’s own system to keep up with the draw.

The cashless policy applies to all sales across the fest, from tickets at the gate to craft and merchandise booths. It’s the food and beverage vendors, however, that see the greatest volume of small transactions, and where the speed of service is key to keeping lines moving.

Crawfish Monica, for instance, typically runs six lines for its popular Jazz Fest dish — rotini in spicy cream sauce with crawfish tails.

Co-owner and namesake Monica Davidson says they can average one serving per second across those six lines. Keeping up with the switch to cashless is one of her big concerns.

“We’ve been doing this so long, so change is tough for all of us,” she says. “But we’re excited, the (music) lineup is great, so we’re taking it one day at a time. Deep breaths, that’s what we’re saying.”

She also recognizes an upside for vendors if all goes smoothly.

“I just hope it goes so well that in the end, we don’t have to think about dealing with cash and change and bringing it all home at night,” she says. — IAN McNULTY / THE TIMES-PICAYUNE

For many vendors though, there is trepidation about how the change will impact their bottom line, customer response to price increases to cover processing fees and the speed at which they can make transactions at the booth.

Some are looking at this year as a time to assess what they’ll do in the future.

“We’re going to give it another try, but we’re nervous about it. If it doesn’t go well, we just don’t know about next year,” says Vicky Patania, who with her husband Dennis Patania runs Galley Seafood, the Metairie restaurant that serves soft-shell crab and catfish po-boys at Jazz Fest.

“This will be 46 years of us doing it,” she says. “You do something like this for that long, it becomes part of your life.”

One prominent vendor that bowed out ahead of the 2023 Jazz Fest is Panorama Foods, maker of crawfish bread and a 35-year veteran of the fest. Crawfish bread creator John Ed Laborde says that decision came through a matrix of factors he called “stressors,” including his age in light of the all-consuming effort of Jazz Fest (he’s now 65), the cost of raw materials, and changes to how vendors operate this year, which he called “the final nudge.”

The food scene has other significant changes this year, with at least a dozen new dishes in the lineup. Multiple vendors who missed 2022 are still on hiatus and a few are making their first return since the pandemic. That includes Palmer’s Jamaican Cuisine with its jerk chicken and Caribbean fish, and CCI Catering (previously called Crescent Catering), which this year will serve a duck and shrimp pasta and a turducken po-boy (in place of its previous Cajun duck po-boy).

Cashless transactions have become increasingly common at large events, and in everyday life. A survey from research group Statista found the percentage of retail cash transactions in the United States was down to 12% in 2022, with cards holding steady and digital and mobile wallet options largely making up the difference.

Cashless payments are not entirely new at Jazz Fest either, where some food vendors accepted cards alongside cash in prior years.

This year’s cashless policy is comprehensive. It also comes with a suite of supporting infrastructure to enable wireless transactions amid the ocean of data demand from all of the phones in use by festival crowds.
