‘Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me’

Comedian Hari Kondabolu performs in New Orleans | by Will Coviello THOUGH HE SUGGESTS IN HIS RECENTLY RELEASED COMEDY SPECIAL, “Vacation

Baby,” that he’s careful with some jokes in some cities in the South, comedian Hari Kondabolu says he doesn’t actually pull punches. Especially not in New Orleans.

“New Orleans has always been good to me,” Kondabolu says. “It’s a pretty fun place to be.”

He’ll be at The Howlin’ Wolf at 8 p.m.

Local audiences may remember Kondabolu for launching the Twitter hashtag #BobbyJindalisSoWhite in 2015, as the then-Louisiana governor was preparing to run for president.

Kondabolu tweeted that Jindal was going to choose a minority running mate to diversify the ticket. The hashtag went viral in the U.S. and India, with Twitter users quickly piling on with their own jokes. “#bobbyjindalissowhite he asked his alma-mater Brown University to identify just as ‘University,’” joked Twitter user Shailee Koranne (@ ssshailee).

When Jindal dropped out, Kondabolu tweeted, “This is the second time Bobby Jindal quit a race.”

Jindal’s name comes up once in “Vacation Baby,” but Kondabolu has moved on to new material. Much of “Vacation Baby” is about his experiences becoming a parent during the pandemic. It changed his perspective.

“As a father, all of a sudden I am willing to do whatever I have to do to make money, and no longer worrying about selling out,” he says. “I will sell out as quickly as I possibly can if it means my kid is going to be OK.” Kondabolu wrote the material for “Vacation Baby” in a few months while he prepared to start headlining again as pandemic restrictions eased last spring.

He released it on YouTube, and a longer version with more material is available on Bandcamp.

In the special, he jokes about how having a son made him reflect on his own life and his parents. His parents both emigrated from India to New York, where he grew up. They both worked in medicine and were not enthusiastic about the idea of him becoming a standup comic. In “Vacation Baby,” he says the pandemic was heartbreaking for his parents, who finally got to see him in a surgical mask.

He worked for immigrant rights in Seattle before getting more serious about comedy.

Jokes about immigration, race and representation have always been part of his standup and segments he did on “Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell.” In 2017, he released the documentary “The Problem with Apu,” about the Indian immigrant character who runs a Kwik-E-Mart on “The Simpsons.”

Kondabolu didn’t object to there being an Indian character on the show, and he thought a lot more could be done with Apu. He wanted to know why it was voiced by a white man, Hank Azaria.

Kondabolu said Apu sounded like “a white guy doing an impression of a white guy making fun of my father.”

Eventually, Azaria acknowledged the problem and the two comedians have become friends. Azaria recorded a promo for “Vacation Baby.”

“We did a conversation on a podcast called ‘Code Switch’ recently,” Kondabolu says. “It is about our friendship. He’s a great guy, and he put a lot of energy into educating himself and other people about race and privilege and what he learned from the experience. I hoped the documentary would reach a lot of people. I don’t know if it did. But surprisingly it reached the guy I focused on in it. It’s pretty fulfilling to see this guy doing great work in the world, and it has this happy ending.”

In “Vacation Baby,” Kondabolu also shares an exchange with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The New York Democrat texted him out of the blue in 2017 to say she liked his comedy, was running for Congress and wanted to work with him. Kondabolu texted back, “I am pretty busy right

now.” But Ocasio-Cortez kept in touch. Then when she won her first election, Kondabolu realized who she was.

They haven’t worked together, but both have laughed about the exchange and left the door open.

“Between that and the Hank Azaria thing, I think a lot of things have come full circle,” he says. “I feel a lot better. A few things are off my plate.”

In “Vacation Baby,” he also takes on Tucker Carlson’s racial fear mongering on his former Fox News show.

Kondabolu recorded his special only last summer, but his comments aged very well.

“People were like, ‘Oh god, I am so happy I saw this right at the time he got fired,’” Kondabolu says. “Some people were like you should take credit for this.

I really wish I could.”

The current tour is almost entirely newer material he’s developing for his next special, and he’s got some bigger targets: Jeff Bezos and the British monarchy.

Kondabolu also is staying in town to be on the panel of a live recording of the NPR news quiz show, “Wait Wait …

Don’t Tell Me.” That is at the Saenger Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 25.

Kondabolu says it’s tough being away from his young son. But he has no illusions about where those worlds will meet.

“He’s not going to find me funny,” Kondabolu says. “To be honest, when I was a kid, I wouldn’t have found me funny. Twelve-year-old me would have been horrified by the kind of standup I do now.”

Louisiana lawmakers last week struck down bills making nonviable pregnancies and miscarriages exempt from the state’s near-total ban on abortion. The bills also would have allowed doctors to treat pregnant patients in crisis without fear of committing a crime under the state’s sweeping anti-abortion laws. HB 598 would have clarified that surgery can be used to treat ectopic pregnancies, and HB 461 would have exempted miscarriages from the ban.

Louisiana is expected to see

a shortage of 7,200 registered nurses by 2025, up from a shortage of 1,845 in 2020, The Times-Picayune reported. The state is facing a declining healthcare workforce, which mirrors a national nursing shortage. More than 100,000 RNs left the workforce nationally in 2021 — during the most stressful time of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Louisiana House committee passes employee protections for medical marijuana users, nixes others THE LOUISIANA HOUSE LABOR COMMITTEE MAY 18 NARROWLY ADVANCED A BILL 6-5 aimed at protecting people

using medical marijuana legally from being disqualified from unemployment compensation.

House Bill 351 by Rep. Mandie Landry, a New Orleans Democrat, originally said that a person who “who receives a recommendation from an authorized clinician to use marijuana for a therapeutic use shall not be disqualified” from unemployment benefits or filing a workers’ compensation claim.

But the committee amended the bill to remove the workers’ compensation piece after hearing concerns from Wayne Fontana of the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry, a powerful lobbying group in the state, about how it would affect incidents where an employee does show up to work intoxicated.

Landry said that under the bill an employee who showed up to work high would still not be eligible for employment compensation,

adding that she found it “extremely insulting” that LABI would insinuate otherwise, which she said they also did in a previous email.

“Just to make it clear, I was not trying to pass a law that says you can be stoned at work because that’s crazy,” Landry said.

Rep. Kenny Cox, a Natchitoches Democrat, offered the amendment in hopes of helping the bill pass. Cox, a veteran, said he thought the bill would help veterans, many of whom use medical cannabis and many of whom experience housing and job insecurity.

“Don’t drive my guys back under the bridge,” he told Fontana.

Landry promised the committee that she would work with LABI, Rep. Larry Frieman, an Abita Springs Republican and workers’ compensation lawyer on the committee, and other opponents on the bill before the full House votes on it.

Rep. Laurie Schlegel, a Metairie Republican, said she was only voting for the bill on that promise. Schlegel

Royce Duplessis, D-New Orleans, was the only lawmaker out of 37 to vote against the bill. If passed by the House, corporations and people will be able to claim tax credits up to $5,000 to cover as much as 50% of a donation made to anti-abortion crisis pregnancy centers. The bill also prohibits the state from regulating the centers which have been found to make false claims about the risks of abortion and refuse to administer birth control.

and Rep. Neil Riser of Columbia were the only two Republicans to vote for the measure, and it likely faces an uphill battle in the House.

Since medical cannabis is still illegal under federal law — despite most states legalizing it — doctors can only “recommend,” not “prescribe” it.

The committee killed another bill, this time along a party line vote that would have made it illegal for employers to ask about a candidate’s wage or benefits history during the hiring process.

And after facing resistance from some committee members and LABI, Rep. Ed Larvadain, an Alexandria Democrat, pulled a bill he was handling for New Orleans Democrat Aimee Adatto Freeman that would have created a statewide paid family and medical leave program in Louisiana.

Currently, federal law is that employers must provide workers with at least 12 weeks of unpaid leave in a 12-month period for the care of a newborn, care of a new foster care placement or adoption, for serious health conditions or to care for an immediate family member with a serious health condition, in addition to provisions for family of active-duty military.

House Bill 596 would have changed that to 12 weeks of partial paid leave tied to the state’s average weekly wage rate. Those making less than half of that average rate would receive almost all of their wages (90%).

Those making more than half of that rate would receive that average rate.

Employers would have paid 45% of the cost of the benefit, while employees would have paid 55%.

For example, that means a worker earning $50,000 a year would have contributed $230 a year, while their employer would chip in $200.

The state would have paid the employer’s portion for any employer with less than 25 people. The bill would have cost nearly $33 million a year, according to an analysis.

The committee heard from both small business owners, cancer patients and advocacy groups in support of the bill.

Maggie Pullen, who owns a onewoman consulting business in the New Orleans area, said she had a surgery for breast cancer in 2018 and couldn’t afford to take off work the six to eight weeks her doctor recommended. She said she wound up going back to work two and a half weeks after her surgery “It had long term implications for my well-being, and it was incredibly exhausting,” Pullen said.

Stacy Roussel of the Louisiana Budget Project read a statement from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society that said 40% of working cancer survivors had to make significant changes to their employment status because of their illness, including switching to part-time status or retiring early. The society said that number was higher for women and people of color.

“Cancer patients in Louisiana need access to paid family and medical leave, so they don’t have to choose between treating their cancer or keeping their job,” Roussel read.

But once LABI came out against the bill, Larvadain said they were at an “impasse” with the business lobbying group and would work with them on a “solution” to try to bring back the bill next year.

Meanwhile, the House criminal justice committee struck down a proposal Tuesday to ban people from carrying guns into hospitals, community health centers and mental health facilities.

New Orleans Democrat Delisha Boyd, who sponsored the bill, clarified that law enforcement officers, security guards and other employees with concealed handgun permits would be exempt from the firearm ban.

She argued it was a simple measure to provide a “layer of protection” for doctors, nurses and other health care facility staffers.

The state already prohibits people from carrying guns into hospitals, if they are already prohibited under state or federal law. Boyd was seeking to expand the law to further apply to mental health care facilities and other health care centers that are not technically considered hospitals.

“This is a proactive measure to protecting health care workers and frontline workers,” she said at Tuesday’s meeting.

Nurse practitioner Freya Zork spoke in favor Boyd’s common-sense legislation and described the trauma of her colleagues at a community health center having a gun pulled on them by a disgruntled patient. She said a patient left her office and approached a colleague at the nurses’ station while waving a gun. The aide de-escalated the situation and escorted him out the door before breaking down in tears.

But lawmakers ultimately voted 8-5 to defer the measure after NRA executive Kelby Seanor and other gun advocates spoke against it, largely presenting hypothetical “good guy with a gun” scenarios and debating the semantics of the phrase “health care facility.” — KAYLEE POCHE AND SARAH RAVITS

Dems disappearing act doesn’t bode well for future fights THIS WEEK THE LOUISIANA SENATE APPROVED STATE SENATOR BETH MIZELL’S SB 41, which makes donations

to anti-abortion “pregnancy crisis centers” eligible for state income tax credits — but exempts the centers from regulatory oversight by the state Department of Health.

Only one Democratic senator, New Orleans’ Royce Duplessis, voted against the measure. Worse still, no Democrat spoke against it on the Senate floor. As The Louisiana Illuminator noted, “there was no discussion of the bill at all before” the 36-1 vote approving the bill. Where were the rest of the Democrats is at least as concerning a question as is the bill itself.

Under the bill the credits would equal 50% of each donation, with an annual credit cap of $5,000 per donation and a $5 million annual cap on credits statewide. Credits would be given on a first-come, first-served basis, but unused credits could be “rolled forward” into future years.

The credits, which begin in 2025 and end in 2030, amount to a generous state subsidy of unregulated anti-abortion “pregnancy crisis centers” that intentionally advertise themselves using language parroting that of abortion clinics. They then attempt to dissuade vulnerable women from getting abortions — and even from using birth control.

Unlike Planned Parenthood clinics, the centers are NOT medical clinics, and they commonly disseminate widely discredited anti-abortion propaganda as if it were serious medical advice. Worse, Mizell’s bill specifically states that eligible centers must affiliate with at least one “national organization for pregnancy centers including Heartbeat International, Care Net, or the National Institute of Family and Life Advocates.”

All three of those organizations are faith-based anti-abortion networks.

As the Journal of Internal Medicine put it in a 2019 article, they seek to “intercept women with unintended or ‘crisis’ pregnancies and dissuade them from undergoing abortion.”

The anti-abortion industry is a multi-billion-dollar concern. The idea that these groups need the added sweetener of tax credits — which

are 10-to-20 times more generous than tax deductions — is, on its face, ludicrous. Given the well documented unethical activities of such “crisis centers,” they need more regulation, not more money.

That Republicans would prioritize a subsidy for anti-abortion propagandists is not surprising. The lack of pushback from Democrats, however, is deeply disturbing. With the state headed toward one-party rule next year under a likely Republican administration, alarm bells should be going off across Louisiana.

For the next four — quite possibly eight — years, Democratic state lawmakers will find themselves at the forefront of a war against human rights and dignity that is raging across the country. Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards, to some degree, has kept some of the worst bills from becoming law for the past four years.

Already, we’re seeing legislative attacks on the rights of trans youth, the broader LGBTQ population, women, Black Louisianans and history itself.

Voting rights, education, health care protections, the environment and even the right to exist as oneself will all be at risk next year, particularly if Attorney General Jeff Landry becomes governor.

At that point, Democratic lawmakers will be alone in Baton Rouge. And in many ways, this year’s legislative session is a test run for the coming fights.

So far, Democrats are failing even to engage.

Why is it so hard for politicians to say, ‘I’m sorry’?

WHAT IS IT ABOUT POLITICIANS THAT MAKES THEM LOATH TO ADMIT A MISTAKE and offer a sincere, unqualified

apology? It amazes me that so many of them can’t bring themselves to say, “I made a mistake. I’m truly sorry.”

For a few days this week, Mayor LaToya Cantrell ranked among those elected officials intoxicated by the conceits of power.

To her credit, Cantrell apologized for an insensitive comment she recently made about women who have become victims of gun violence. To her shame, her apology included a typical politician’s deflection that her remarks were “misconstrued” (read: “blame the media, not me”) — and her qualified mea culpa came only after being called out publicly for not apologizing.

The story behind Cantrell’s diluted apology is a case study in politicians’ pathological reluctance to express public remorse.

In recent weeks, the plague of gun violence in New Orleans reached a new level of horror when several young women were murdered. Their violent deaths prompted The Times-Picayune to publish a front-page story about the “trail of mothers” killed by shooters.

after a double homicide claimed the lives of two more young women — Ja’Diamond Jones, mother to a 2-year-old, and Imani Williams.

Unfortunately, the mayor’s comments included an off-the-cuff remark that “what we have to understand is that women also play a role in violent activity in our city.” Asked to clarify, Cantrell stressed that the cases weren’t random.

She referred additional questions to the New Orleans Police Department and remained silent over the ensuing weekend as the victims’ families felt the sting of her insensitive — and inaccurate — comment.

On Monday, May 15, Cantrell pivoted by calling for a “swift, sweeping response” to the violence — but a pivot is not an apology.

Finally, on May 17, Cantrell said her comments had been “absolutely misconstrued.” She said she had apologized directly to the families, who she said had forgiven her.

Then she pivoted back to her regal self, proclaiming that her apology to the families “wasn’t walking anything back.” She said she showed “respect” to grieving families by “humbling myself just a little bit more.”

Cantrell said that when she made the comment about women playing a role in violence, she meant it from an “investigative standpoint,” but she did not explain how it related, specifically, to the recent murders.

“I did not intend to hurt anyone and did not intend to make light of the women and the families that were impacted. So my heart just remains very heavy, and I am very sorry for that,” she said.

We all know that politicians have big egos, and politics today is a blood sport. Perhaps politicians are slow to acknowledge any human weakness because they fear their adversaries will weaponize it against them.

That’s a shame, because voters love and respect leaders who, to paraphrase Gen. Douglas MacArthur, are strong enough to know when they are weak.

Deep down, I guess many pols are just insecure — or worse, cowardly.

With Memorial Day next week, I thought I’d ask about the history of a monument downtown that pays tribute to female members of the military. It’s on Elk Place near Tulane Avenue.

When was it put there and who designed it?

THE MILITARY WOMEN’S NATIONAL MONUMENT ON ELK PLACE WAS DEDICATED on Memorial Day 1962.

The gray granite monument features bronze etchings on all four of its sides of women in uniforms of various branches of the military. That includes the Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and Marines as well as the Air Force Nurse Corps, Air Force Medical Specialist Corps, Navy Nurses Corps and Women’s Army Corps, or WAC. It was created under the leadership of the New Orleans chapter of the WAC Veterans Association, which according to the Times-Picayune joined with other local military women’s groups to raise $9,000 for the project.

Camilla Mays Frank, a retired WAC Captain and reservist, designed the monument, which weighs 14,000 pounds. “On the top of the monument will be a bronze orb representing the world and on top of that the dove

of peace with an olive branch in its mouth,” Frank told the paper in May 1962. A plaque on the base of the monument dedicates it “to the honor and glory of all military women who offer their lives in defense of the United States in the cause for peace.”

At the time of its dedication, Frank said she believed it to be the first monument in the nation erected in honor of women who have served in all branches of the military. Previous monuments had honored women in individual branches.

One of those is just a few feet away, the statue of “Molly Marine,” by noted sculptor Enrique Alférez. Standing on Elk Place at Canal Street, it was dedicated in 1943 on the U.S. Marine Corps’ birthday, November 10.

75 YEARS AGO THIS MONTH MARKED THE END OF THE LINE for New Orleans’ fabled

streetcar named Desire. The Desire streetcar line, introduced in 1920, was discontinued on May 30, 1948.

For more than 25 years, the Desire line began at Canal Street and continued down Bourbon Street past Esplanade Avenue. The streetcar then veered left on Pauger Street and went down Dauphine Street for 16 blocks to Desire Street. On the return trip, the streetcar traveled Tonti Street to France Street and France to Royal Street all the way to Canal.

Tennessee Williams wrote his famous 1947 play “A Streetcar Named Desire” while living at 632 St. Peter St., where he could hear the Desire streetcar rumble down the tracks.

As early as 1940, there was talk of removing the streetcar lines that ran through the French Quarter. “Principal complaint against the streetcars has been that their vibration is responsible for much of the property damage in that part of the city, and that their noise and difficulty in negotiating the narrow streets, especially during the busy hours, unduly disturbs the residents,” the Times-Picayune reported in July 1940. Detractors got their wish when buses replaced the streetcars in 1948.

In 1967, RTA’s predecessor New Orleans Public Service Inc. donated a restored Desire streetcar to the Louisiana Tourist Development Commission. For many years, the streetcar was on display at the French Market, then on the grounds of the Old U.S. Mint, where it stayed until the 1990s.

NECTARINES AREN’T A FRUIT THAT NEEDS TO BE PEELED. But a small

mix-up put rapper Alfred Banks and producer Albert Allenback onto a conversation about authenticity.

“Alfred texted me this thing — nectarine peels — and in my head I confused it with tangerine peels.

And I thought about all the studios I’ve been in, while I’ve been peeling Cuties and Halos, and somebody is in the studio grandstanding, clearly being someone who is not them,” Allenback says. “Then I realized, ‘Oh, nectarines.’ But by that point I’ve written this little melody — and ‘nectarine peels,’ it sounds better.”

Banks and Allenback followed that thread on their new EP as SaxKixAve. Released last week, “Nectarine Peels” is an all-too-quick album of reflective, catchy hip-hop with Banks’ wit and Allenback’s production — crossing lo-fi jazz, house, rhythm and blues and other genres — on display along with guest appearances by Mega Ran, Pell, LeTrainiump and HaSizzle.

“It became this thing about being who you are, even when it’s easier socially and more financially expedient to be someone else,” Allenback adds.

“We see that so much. The algorithm rewards direct copies.”

There isn’t a narrative on “Nectarine Peels,” but there’s a loose concept that comes up across the EP, especially on the title track and the closer “The Sum of All Peels.” There’s a personality grappling with trying to fake it until they make it and an observer wondering if the faker sleeps well at night.

“Man, just be yourself, but also be the most honest version of yourself and you’ll be able to stand on it,” Banks says.

“My whole thing has always been: As long as you can sleep at night. As long as you can stand behind the music.”

Banks, an emcee, and Allenback, the sax player and flautist for Tank and the Bangas, started SaxKixAve in early 2020 and released their first EP, “I Don’t Wear Suits,” in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. But what could have been a fun one-off has only grown and sharpened, with out-of-town dates, a slot at the 2022 French Quarter Fest and a spot in January at a Pelicans game to perform their single “Kaleidoscope” with Pell. And last month, Banks and Allenback joined their glbl wrmng

Authenticity is a fruitful topic for SaxKixAve to explore — it’s the reason Banks and Allenback work so well together and, by extension, why their music clicks. There’s a strong personal friendship at the base, a shared sense of humor and consideration of one another. It bleeds over professionally and the two have rubbed off on one another: Banks is a little less self-serious, including in his recent solo work, and he in turn has tempered some of Allenback’s absurdities.

The SaxKixAve Instagram and TikTok is filled with low-budget, off-kilter, Adult Swim-worthy videos plugging show dates, new music or just random thoughts. There’s been a recent string of videos featuring crispy, fried hashbrowns — used as playing cards and motivation for Allenback’s training sessions — to promo “Hashbrowns,” an outrageous freestyle about the joys of the artery-clogging morning treat.

But while SaxKixAve uses comedy to spread the good word about their music, it’s only a vehicle. Their Instagram videos for “Hashbrowns” caught fire because Banks was able to write catchy lyrics about an absurd topic over Allenback’s grinding, MF Doomesque, synth-bass-heavy beat. It’s a good song — a weird one, definitely, but a good one.

“One thing that we agree on is that as funny as we are, as many jokes we crack, the music is first and foremost,” Banks says. “The music has to slap.”

Bayou Odyssey

THYMIOS PARTALES AND HIS GREEK-AMERICAN SUPER BAND WILL PERFORM at their first New Orleans Greek Festival on Memorial Day weekend. The band has two albums’ worth of originals and keeps up with the top hits in Greece, and it also has a handle on folk music. Since it sometimes performs at Greek weddings, the band knows all sorts of regional folk songs and dances. That comes in handy when festivalgoers make requests, Partales says.

Partales’ band will perform all three days of Greek Fest, May 26-28, on the outdoor stage at the Hellenic Cultural Center along Bayou St. John at Allen Toussaint Boulevard. The festival also brings a host of Greek food, a market, kids’ games and more.

Partales is based in San Antonio, and when he’s not performing with the band, he sings at Greek night clubs around Texas. Keyboardist Kostas Papahatzis lives in New York. Percussionist Panagiotis Papahatzis lives in Greece and is the lead writer for the band’s original music. He also has his own studio there, where the band recorded its albums. Tasos Kopulos plays the bouzouki, which looks like a guitar with a long, thin neck. Kostas Triantafillou plays clarinet.

choral music, including Byzantine chanting. Boyer moved to New Orleans to become Holy Trinity’s music director, and he is rebuilding the church’s music programs after the disruption of the pandemic.

At the fest, the church’s Hellenic Dancers don traditional folk outfits and perform traditional dances, both inside the Hellenic Center and outdoors.

The festival also has a wide array of food offerings, from the Greek market to prepared foods.

Highlights include roasted lamb, souvlaki, spanakopita, stuffed grape leaves and more. New this year are booths offering karpouzosalata (watermelon and feta salad), kolokithopita (zucchini and feta pie) and melitzanosalata, an eggplant dip. There also is a pastry counter with an extensive selection of baklava, karidopita and ravani cakes, and cookies including koulourakia, kourabiedes, stuffed finikia and more.

For drinks, there are booths for Greek Mythos beer, Greek wines, spirits including mastiha liqueur and ouzo, and mango, pomegranate, strawberry, watermelon and ouzo daiquiris.

Dubbed the Athenian Playground, the kids’ area features games, craft activities, face painting, a clown with balloon animals and snowballs.

The festival also holds a 5K run/walk on Saturday.

Festival hours are 5-11 p.m. Friday, May 26; 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Saturday, May 27; and 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Sunday, May 28. Admission is $10, and children under 12 get in free.

At the festival, the band will play a mix of tunes, from originals and contemporary Greek hits to classics familiar to wider audiences like “Zorba the Greek” and “Never on Sunday.” There’s plenty to dance to, and newcomers can join in and learn Greek dances including the kalamatiano, tsamiko and syrto, in which participants link hands and dance in a chain or circle, or the more belly dancing-like tsifteteli.

During breaks by the full band, Partales will DJ sets of popular music.

There’s also much more traditional music in the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral. During the festival, visitors can take tours of the church and hear a short talk on the history of the church and community. There also will be demonstrations of Byzantine chants led by John Michael Boyer, who recently published a lesson book on the sacred music of the Greek Orthodox Church.
