Founded in 2019 by American artist Matthew Montero, the museum represents a reimagining of one of art history’s oldest subjects: iconography. 500 years ago, artists diligently painted, sculpted, carved, and captured the signifcant religious fgures, symbols, stories, and overall sensibility of the era. Today, the venerated subjects are the genius and visionary men and women, cultural objects, and commercial products that have collectively moved together to shape the modern world. To tour ICONS is to journey fresh into the heart of America during the 20th century. Guided by the artist himself, it’s a tour for all generations to appreciate and feel the power and wonder of art in an exciting new way.

MUSEUM OF THE SOUTHERN JEWISH EXPERIENCE

Representing less than 2% of the population, Southern Jews have made a substantial impact on the communities where they lived. The Museum of the Southern Jewish Experience explores the many ways that Jews infuenced and were infuenced by the distinct cultural heritage of the American South. Spanning 300 years and 13 states, interactive exhibits and galleries follow the remarkable story of Jewish life in the South, from the Colonial era through the Civil War, the Holocaust, and the Civil Rights Movement. Exhibits focus on Jewish religious practice,

unique Southern Jewish folk and foodways, and more.

Now on view, “Most Fortunate Unfortunates: The Jewish Orphans’ Home of New Orleans,” a special exhibit examining the legacy of America’s frst purpose-built Jewish orphanage, opened in 1856 and home to over 1,600 children throughout its 90-year history. A uniquely nourishing place, “the Home” defed usual assumptions about institutional homes for children. The exhibition features rare artifacts including an original, handwritten

registration book dating back to 1855, a letter from President Theodore Roosevelt, and personal items owned by Home residents.

Dedicated to bringing Louisiana’smaritime heritage to life, Maritime Museum Louisiana is located on the banksofthe Tchefuncte River in Madisonville, Louisiana. GERMAN-AMERICAN CULTURAL CENTER AND MUSEUM

In 1836, German immigrants founded the West Bank town of Mechanikham that would become Gretna. Honoring those founders is the mission of the German-American Cultural Center and Museum at 519 Huey P. Long Ave in Gretna. The center interprets the German immigrant contribution to Louisiana’s history Its museum exhibits depict the 1721 arrival of the frst Germans to Louisiana, later immigration, the world of work, culture, religion and the “culture in crisis” during the two world wars. Founded 26 years ago by citizens, governmental leaders and the

National Park Service, the free GACC museum is open from 10 AM to 3 PM, Wednesday through Saturday. An exhibit of historic photographs is now on view, “From Mechanikham to Gretna: German Families, Events and Landmarks.” Photographs document the Great Crevasse of 1891, when the Mississippi River broke a Marrero levee, fooding Gretna. Other images tell stories about life on the West Bank - from a 1920s fre parade, to corner stores, to a majestic castle on the Harvey Canal, to an 1880s view of William Tell Hall, which served as the Jeferson Parish Courthouse. OGDEN MUSEUM

OF SOUTHERN ART

Located in the vibrant Warehouse ArtsDistrict of downtownNew Orleans, Ogden Museum of Southern Art invites visitorstoexperience and learn about the diverse artistsand cultureofthe American South. Plantation tourism is controversial. At LauraPlantation, the truth about slavery has neverbeen hidden. When Lauraopenedin1994, it became the frst plantation in Louisiana to highlight the stories of enslavedpeople, agroundbreaking approach that incited ashift in plantation interpretation.

Based on primary source documentsdiscoveredinLouisiana, Missouri, and France, the guided experience continues to evolve, complemented by acomprehensive museum exhibit honoring the enslavedcommunity of the historic site.

Their names areNanetteand Aimée,Clémence and Lucy.

Four women among countless others, both free and enslaved, whose lives were intertwined at LauraPlantation.Their complexstories are thestory of Louisiana,fromits foundingasa French colony,tothe Louisiana Purchase, through theCivil War, Emancipation, and the inescapable Americanization that redefned Creole Louisiana forever. Whitney Plantation is the only plantation museum in Louisiana dedicated to the story of slavery National Geographic calls it “...the plantation every American should visit.” This former sugar, indigo, and rice plantation operated from 1752-1975 It preserves more than a dozen historical structures, many of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Memorial Hall is Louisiana’s oldest museum, displaying artifacts and memorabilia of Civil War veterans. Opened on January 8,1891, the anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans, this military museum tells the story of the Civil War soldier through exhibits that displays the weapons, uniforms, and small personal items. Memorial Hall currently has a special exhibit entitled “The Will to Fight” which explores the life of the common soldier, North and South.

French Quarter History Galleries: Visitors can learn how the French Quarter went from swampy colonial outpost to the oldest neighborhood in America’s most distinctive city and how 300 years of history shaped New Orleans

CHANGING EXHIBITIONS:

Making It Home: From Vietnam to New Orleans: Making It Home presents memories of frstgeneration Vietnamese refugees who settled in and around New Orleans after the fall of Saigon in

1975 The exhibition is inspired by interviews from HNOC’s Viet Chronicle oral history project. Each testimony shares a deep personal experience: stories of trauma and loss, of hope, faith, and family Taken together, the interviews provide a history of a vibrant and resilient community

The Trail They Blazed: Built collaboratively with people who participated in the local Civil Rights Movement, The Trail They Blazed presents stories of social and racial justice straight from the people who lived them. The multimedia experience immerses visitors in the movement, with ambient musical recordings of songs sung by activists, more than three dozen audio excerpts from oral history interviews, archival news footage, and more.
