Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit

Singer-songwriter Jason Isbell and his band The 400 Unit pulled a heavy crowd to the Gentilly Stage at last year’s Jazz Fest, playing a mix of Southern rock and alt-country. He’s now touring with his great new album, “Weathervanes,” and returns to New Orleans for a show at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15, at the Orpheum Theater. Alabama folk musician Lonnie Holley also performs. In a way, it’s understandable: The New Orleans-based vocalist can sing in seven languages and gracefully passes through a wide range of genres, from bolero, ranchera and samba to Great American Songbook standards and French and Italian love songs. But Kaminis appears so comfortable on stage, it’s hard to imagine she wasn’t born into some global village alongside musicians playing songs from Brazil to Russia — although, the MexicanAmerican singer does have her own wide-ranging background.

“Whenever somebody tells me to do [a narrow set], I’m like ‘Oh! But there’s so many other kinds of songs we could do,” Kaminis says with another laugh. “It’s like my attention span can’t do the one thing. I jump around all over the place … I’m Mexican, but I’ve lived [in the U.S.] since I was 6 years old, and half of my band is from Brazil, and my partner is Brazilian, so I speak Portuguese more than Spanish now.”

This week, though, Kaminis will play a relatively more tailored set for a Hispanic Heritage Month celebration on Saturday, Sept. 16, at the French Market. The free festival will feature two stages of music curated

by Hispanic performing arts group Ecos Latinos as well as community organization booths and food vendors, including Curramba La Bella, La Milpa and Taqueria La Lucha.

Kaminis and her quartet perform at noon on the French Market stage, and other groups include Sincopado Trio, the Felipe Carrera Quartet, Margie Perez, Patrice Fisher & Arpa Sextet and more. Find the full lineup at frenchmarket.org.

Kaminis was born in Spain to a Mexican mother and Spanish father, but her mother quickly took her back to Mexico City, where Kaminis spent her early years. After her mother married a man from Miami, they moved to Florida and Kaminis graduated from the University of Tampa. She spent some time in her early 20s as a “national park hippie,” working summers in Yellowstone and at Jackson Hole and about 10 months in Yosemite National Park saving money to ultimately move to New York City.

Singing, though, wasn’t Kaminis’ original goal in New York. In fact, she didn’t grow up with a musical

background, past her mother listening to Enya or her adoptive grandmother singing in church. She originally wanted to go into theater.

“I didn’t start singing until I was about 26 years old. I had a late start,” Kaminis says. “I started listening to Ella Fitzgerald when I was studying abroad [in college]. It’s so weird I had to go to Spain to find Ella Fitzgerald.”

Kaminis came across a Fitzgerald CD while in Granada, Spain, and became obsessed. Her mother later gave Kaminis a Fitzgerald songbook and she started to learn a few songs along with some Edith Piaf tunes. A piano player at a lodge in Yosemite caught wind Kaminis could sing and convinced her to join him for one song a night.

In New York, several years later, Kaminis met an Argentinian guitar player at a small Spanish bar, and she would occasionally “sheepishly sing” with him.

One day, the guitar player asked Kaminis to accompany him on a gig.

“It just developed randomly, and before I knew it, I was doing it professionally and was able to quit waitressing,” Kaminis says.

Kaminis’ path led her to sing for the New York-based Carte Blanche Jazz Band, an ensemble focused on French, Latin and American jazz from the ’20s though the ’60s, as well as the 10-piece Latin orchestra La Pachamambo. She still regularly travels to New York for gigs with Carte Blanche, donning a gown and jewelry for galas and fundraising events. It’s a different world from the more casual environment she’s found in New Orleans.

After about a dozen years in New York, Kaminis was hoping for a change and decided to move to New Orleans in January 2021. She quickly met other musicians — she regularly plays with guitarist Felipe Todescan Antonio, drummers Filipe Leite and Fernando Lima, bassists Sean Weber and Juan SotoBown and keyboardist Eduardo Tozatto — and started singing around town, including regular gigs at Frenchmen Street clubs like Bamboula’s.

Kaminis calls herself “an illiterate singer,” because she can’t explain what’s on the music chart. But that shouldn’t matter to those in the audience watching Kaminis’ captivating stage presence and heartfelt delivery.

Language barriers won’t matter.

“Love is always the theme, almost always,” Kaminis says. “I think because we all feel the same emotions, it doesn’t matter what language we speak.”

Kaminis is currently working on her first album, which she says will include mostly originals in, of course, a range of styles along with two covers. Her first single will be out in September.

“Here in New Orleans, I’m kind of trying to be honest about who I am,” Kaminis says. “New Orleans kind of lets you do that.”

Portrayal of Guilt

In the six years since Portrayal of Guilt came together, the Austin, Texas, hardcore band has covered a lot of ground.

The band now has four full-length albums, six EPs and splits and several other releases under its belt, swinging from early-2000s inspired screamo on its early releases to blackened sludge metal on this year’s “Devil Music.”

Michael O’Hara, the Grammynominated singer-songwriter, recently received commendations from Louisiana’s lieutenant governor and the New Orleans City Council for his contributions to the state’s musical heritage and work with the Humane Society of Louisiana. O’Hara fronted New Orleans rock band The Shieks in the 1980s before moving to Los Angeles, where he wrote songs for Anita Baker, Patti LaBelle and others. O’Hara now gigs each weekend at the Chophouse on Magazine Street.

Feed the Second Line recently cut the ribbon on a solar power installation at Grace at the Green Light.

It’s the fourth location for Feed the Second Line’s Get Lit Stay Lit initiative, which installs solar panels and batteries at restaurants and places that serve food to help them continue to cook for their neighborhood during a blackout.

Attorney General Jeff Landry refused to participate in the first debate for the Louisiana governor’s race because the debate was co-sponsored by the Urban League, a nonpartisan group focused on issues impacting the Black community — which is nearly 33% of Louisiana’s population.

The state Republican Party also called on other GOP candidates to boycott the debate, calling the Urban League “radical” and “ultra liberal.” To their credit, most other Republican candidates ignored the party and joined the debate.

toward banning residential shortterm rentals in case a federal judge strikes down existing rules intended as a compromise.

U.S. District Judge Ivan Lemelle is expected to rule on the matter in the coming weeks and last week ordered the city to stop enforcing the rules the council passed in March. That triggered the decision

by Council President JP Morrell and Vice President Helena Moreno to start preparing for a ban.

Morrell said he was “baffled”

by Lemelle’s order, which he said, “completely dishevels the solution enshrined by the City Council.”

“Cities across the country are struggling to grapple with predatory companies such as AirBnB and Vrbo that want their cake and eat it too, all at the expense of vulnerable residents who struggle to find housing,” Morrell said in a

statement. “If the federal judge decides that the current regulations are insufficient, then we as a legislative body will resolve this matter once and for all.”

The council will have to wait until Lemelle rules on the matter to take any further action, which could happen as soon as the end of next week. Should he strike down some or all of the STR rules, it could take at least two weeks for the council to pass the ban and for it to go into effect, if not longer.

Because of the judge’s orders, the city has canceled the residential STR application period originally set by Sept. 1-7, and the corresponding permit lottery set for Oct. 2.

Morrell and other council members have been considering a ban on residential STRs publicly since the spring. After multiple instances of the council writing STR rules, the STR industry

challenging them and the courts striking them down, Morrell called the rules the most recent set of rules — which limit the number of STRs per block and require onsite operators — the “last best offer for STRs to exist at all.”

In her weekly press conference Sept. 6, Mayor LaToya Cantrell, who has been a longtime supporter of STRs and even appointed an industry executive to oversee the permitting process, criticized the council for its handling of the tourist rentals.

Cantrell said she’d been hearing from operators who she claimed were “good stewards” following city rules and had been part of the “short-term rental fabric for over five years.” She said New Orleans would lose revenue with the halt of new applications, though she did not mention the number of illegal STRs which have far outweighed the legal ones.

“Now they feel really slighted …

Cantrell said, adding, “No one is winning here.”

At the press conference, Cantrell also ignored longstanding complaints about the explosion of illegal STRs — and the general impact the industry has had on rents in the city — under rules she and former Council Member Stacy Head authored in 2016. “We got it right,” she said.

Morrell said those rules caused an “STR gold rush.”

funds to pay for an anti-recall mailer this year.

In a Sept. 6 letter to Cantrell, Council President JP Morrell laid out the preliminary findings of the council’s investigation into whether the mailer violated state campaign finance laws and city procurement rules, which is the first step towards firing Joseph.

In a statement, Morrell said, “The City Council held a very deliberate process throughout this investigation, which began in February with public concerns regarding the political nature of a mailer involving over $50,000 of public funds. Over a six-month period, the City Council culled through thousands of documents as well as public testimony from Mr. Joseph (Director of the Mayor’s Office of Communications) and Mr. Julien Meyer (Chief Procurement Officer).”

He also scheduled a special hearing on the issue for Sept. 12 where the council will finalize its findings, at which time the council will provide Cantrell with a timeline to fire Joseph.

If she does not fire him, the council would then move forward with what Morrell said would be the first ever firing of a city official by the council.

Cantrell responded angrily to the specter of having one of her closest aides booted from City Hall, accusing the council of engaging in “bullying tactics” and “political trickery,” and insisted it would be part of a pattern of targeting her advisors.

It would be “similar to many other incidents, whether it’s Jonathan Rhodes, one of my people, the list can go on,” she told reporters during her weekly press conference, adding, “I support my employees, those who show up, those who do the job … Gregory Joseph is one of those employees.”

Rhodes was a top advisor to Cantrell on technology issues who left his job last year after the council opened an investigation into whether he was operating a “payto-play” scam as part of Cantrell’s failed Smart Cities program.

BACK IN MARCH, WHEN THE NEW ORLEANS CITY COUNCIL PASSED NEW RULES governing short-term rent-

als in the city’s residential areas, Council President JP Morrell bluntly warned industry officials that if they didn’t accept the council’s regulatory compromise, he’d take steps to ban neighborhood STRs altogether.

“This is the last best offer for STRs to exist at all in New Orleans,” Morrell said. “I know I speak for probably a solid majority of my colleagues in that we’re not going to nibble at STRs for the next three years. If this deal is undone, or if it is substantially compromised, the only thing left for the council to do, and I will certainly lead that effort, is to just ban residential STRs completely.”

Predictably, the industry didn’t like the compromise, even though it allowed out-of-state investors to continue siphoning money from our community and jack up rents and home prices. Apparently willing to see just how serious Morrell was, the industry challenged the new rules in federal court. Now, they’re about to find out.

U.S. District Judge Ivan Lemelle has suspended enforcement of the new regs, and the council responded by taking the first steps toward banning residential STRs outright — but only if Lemelle strikes down the city’s newest rules.

If adopted, Morrell’s proposed ban won’t totally run the industry out of New Orleans. Rentals for less than 30 days would still be allowed in areas zoned commercial and in residential areas that allow hotels, motels and bed-and-breakfasts. Even in the latter case, STRs would be barred, however.

a hotel, motel or bed-and-breakfast, which are taxed higher and regulated more tightly than STRs. And, Morrell says, gaining approval for those uses is a long and difficult process.

Many neighborhoods aren’t zoned exclusively residential. “Mixed use” areas historically allowed small businesses like corner stores and neighborhood bars to flourish, but more recently they also allowed STRs to obtain commercial permits. To address that problem, the council passed an interim citywide ban on new commercial STRs while the City Planning Commission studies new rules for commercial STRs. We sympathize with residents who rent part of their homes to help make ends meet, but the STR industry was given more than a fair chance to operate here. Unfortunately, the biggest players got greedy at every turn. They fooled around, and now it’s time for them to find out.

If Judge Lemelle upholds the compromise regulations, STRs can continue to operate under the tighter rules that the industry has challenged.

If he tosses the new rules, the council should adopt Morrell’s proposed ban and work to tighten the rules on STRs in commercial areas as well. The new rules also should provide mechanisms to shut down the worst offenders quickly and permanently.

It’s past time to return New Orleans neighborhoods to the people of New Orleans.

Jeff Landry’s cowardly debate dodge is a big red flag DURING HIS NEARLY EIGHT YEARS AS LOUISIANA’S ATTORNEY GENERAL, JEFF LANDRY PROVIDED ample evi-

dence that he’s no stable genius. Now he has shown his cowardly stripes by ducking the first televised debate of the governor’s race. It’s a big red flag that telegraphs the kind of governor he’ll be, if elected.

Landry’s campaign and the state Republican Party added a measure of calculated race baiting to the mix, blaming Landry’s no-show on the fact that the Urban League of Louisiana is one of the debate’s sponsoring organizations.

The National Urban League, founded in 1910, is a highly respected, nonpartisan group that works with business leaders to advance civil rights and economic parity for people of color. The League’s leadership, nationally and in Louisiana, is predominantly Black.

The other sponsor of the Sept. 7 debate is the Public Affairs Research Council of Louisiana (PAR), likewise a respected, nonpartisan organization. PAR’s leadership is white. Landry’s campaign and the state GOP did not mention PAR in their missives against the debate.

Besides, all debate details — particularly the format and questions — were decided by the statewide media participants, not the organizational sponsors.

Landry couldn’t even muster the courage to make a statement of nonparticipation himself. Instead, his campaign spokesperson issued a statement accusing the Urban League of antiTrump and anti-Second Amendment bias, citing “media reports” that claim the League’s programs “elected Democrats.”

The so-called media reports cited by Team Landry are actually right-wing propaganda websites wholly lacking in credibility and neutrality. This is a common GOP ploy: plant false “news stories” in right-wing media and then cite those stories to bootstrap false narratives in mainstream media.

In contrast to Landry’s slick, multi-million-dollar ad campaign, which portrays him as a likable everyman, that’s the kind of governor he’ll be — a reckless liar who will divide Louisianans by any means that further his ruthless political ambitions. That includes race-baiting dog whistles, long a Republican favorite.

Landry’s not ducking all debates, just the one (so far) that threatens to expose him to serious questions about

his record. He plans to join a Sept. 15 debate hosted

by Nexstar, a conservative media conglomerate that owns nearly 200 television stations, including KLFY-TV in Lafayette. That debate will be on a Friday night, which all but guarantees a small audience and media coverage overshadowed by high school, LSU and Saints football.

Landry’s baseless attack against the Urban League also echoes former President Donald Trump’s statement that he only represents the people who voted for him, not everyone. Landry no doubt will adopt a similar attitude toward Black and Brown folk in Louisiana if he becomes governor.

Governors don’t get to pick and choose the crises they must face. They must lead all Louisianans through hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, fires and more.

That’s what term-limited Gov. John Bel Edwards has done for nearly eight years. Not even his fiercest critics could accuse him of cowardice.

The same will never be said of Gov. Jeff Landry.

I enjoy listening to Mike Hoss and Deuce McAllister on the Saints radio broadcasts. Who were the team’s first radio announcers?

ering the New Orleans Saints’ inaugural season for WWL-AM in 1967.

Wester, whose broadcasting career spanned more than 60 years, worked as sports director at WDSU-TV and was affiliated with the Mutual Broadcasting Company. Magill worked as a staff announcer, news anchor and disc jockey for WWL for more than 40 years. The pair handled Saints coverage for the team’s first season before being replaced by former Saint Jim Taylor and sportscaster Bill McColgan.

John Ferguson and former Saint Steve Stonebreaker handled the 197375 seasons. In 1976, Saints games moved to WGSO, with former WDSU sports director Wayne Mack working with Dick Butkus, Archie Manning and Danny Abramowicz.

In 1982, the radio broadcasts returned to WWL and Larry Matson became play-by-play announcer, with WWL-TV sports director Jim Henderson as color commentator.

Henderson switched to play-by-play in 1986 alongside Manning. The pair

In 1992, there was a three-man radio team on WQUE, with Dave Garrett briefly joining Henderson and Manning.

They continued without Garrett for five more years.

Several former Saints joined the broadcast team in recent years. Stan Brock replaced Manning in 1998, then Hokie Gajan replaced Brock in 2000.

It was Gajan and Henderson who announced the Saints’ historic Super Bowl season on WWL and the Saints Radio Network, with Henderson’s famous call in 2010: “Pigs have flown.

Hell is frozen over. The Saints are on their way to the Super Bowl!”

When Gajan died in 2016, Deuce McAllister replaced him. Henderson retired from the Saints radio broadcasts in 2017. He was replaced by Zach Strief in 2018 then Mike Hoss in 2021.

BLAKEVIEW SPECIAL EVENTS THIS WEEK WILL MARK THE CENTENNIAL OF NOTRE DAME SEMINARY, which began educating Catholic men for the priesthood and religious

life when it opened and began offering classes on Sept. 18, 1923. That first year, 25 students registered for philosophy and theological courses.

According to the Notre Dame Seminary website, a facility for the local Catholic church to train young men was first established in 1838 Lafourche Parish.

Subsequent facilities in New Orleans served the same purpose.

Archbishop John Shaw led a campaign to construct a new seminary building on a site on S. Carrollton Avenue. The building was designed to house 96 students and six faculty members.

The seminary opened for classes in September 1923 and was formally dedicated that November. A host of religious leaders were present, led by Archbishop Shaw and Archbishop John Glennon of St. Louis. According to The Times-Picayune, a cablegram from Pope Pius XI was read at the dedication: “The Venerable Pontiff, with a prayer for every blessing for the new seminary, very lovingly imparts the Apostolic blessing.”

In 1925, a residence was built next door to the seminary for the Archbishop of New Orleans. Pope John Paul II stayed there as a guest of Archbishop Philip Hannan during the pope’s 1987 visit to the city. Archbishop Gregory Aymond is an alumnus, former professor and president-rector of the seminary, which now also offers theology degrees for lay people.

On Thursday, Sept. 14, a special 100th anniversary Rector’s Dinner will be held at the Roosevelt Hotel. On Saturday, Sept. 16, a Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Louis Cathedral to commemorate the seminary’s centennial.

Exploring art and the humanities: The Helis Foundation John Scott Center offers engaging community events

In his life and work, artist John Scott found inspiration everywhere, carrying a sketchbook with him at all times and drawing inspiration from jazz musicians to fold in concepts of improvisation into his visual art. Today, with The Helis Foundation John Scott Center, the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities seeks to carry on that legacy with numerous public events that are designed to expose the power and creativity of art to all.

“John Scott’s life ethos was to pass on information, experiences and resources.

That informs a great deal of the work we do,” said Christina Lott, program manager for the center. “For us, the arts are entangled in everything and are a vehicle we can use to explore humanities issues and concerns while expanding access to spaces that are both beautiful and impactful.”

Members of the public will have an opportunity to do just that during three events in September, each one designed to showcase the positive effects that art can have. On September 13, the Studio Insights panel discussion will feature individuals who had close personal or professional ties to Scott speaking about his workspaces and methods.

“He had an open practice where people could come in and out. It was an approachable and constant learning experience,” Lott said. The panel discussion will be a continuation of the conversation begun by the rst Studio Insights panel in June and an earlier event in which individuals were able to create art inspired by some of Scott’s unnished works and leover materials, with a focus on how art can be an open and collaborative experience.

Then, on September 16, a Family Fun Day at the John Scott Center will feature activities t for everyone from young children to older adults. The center is open every Saturday, but the Family Fun Day will include special events like story-sharing, art-making, make-and-take cras and music.

Lastly, on September 21, the center will host an arts educator social with a guided tour, mix-and-mingle, refreshments and a presentation about Gustave Blache III Art Scholarships for Aspiring Artists to support Louisiana high school students or recent graduates who want to study at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.

“We know that some people have limited access to the arts, which is a main reason why we at the center want to give people an avenue and an ability to

explore their humanity and John Scott’s belief that art is life,” Lott said. “There’s something for everyone in our center. Especially for people from Louisiana, they can take pride in knowing that there is a global artist who came from New Orleans and created works from his experiences in this space. It’s a great lesson about the importance of seeing yourself in your world and responding to your world.

Everyone can benet from that.”

The events also align with the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities’ overall mission to champion the humanities across the state. In addition to the center, which opened in September 2022, other LEH initiatives include “64 Parishes,” a quarterly magazine on Louisiana history and culture as well as an accompanying website and online encyclopedia; early childhood education and literacy programs; and re-granting, whereby LEH takes in funds and distributes them to museums, historical sites and organizations that support the humanities in Louisiana.

“As a statewide private nonprot and the Louisiana affiliate for the National Endowment for the Humanities, we see our role as being stewards and supporters of the state’s culture and history,” said Lauren Noel, the organization’s marketing director. “We’re dedicated to increasing access to the humanities in every parish in Louisiana. We have a lot of ongoing initiatives that we’re proud of and since the center opened last year, it has become another wonderful avenue for us to expand access to the humanities in conjunction with visual arts.”

All of the events will take place at The Helis Foundation John Scott Center, 938 Lafayette Street, New Orleans. The center is open to the public from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays.

WITH THE BRUTAL HEAT OF SUMMER (hopefully) breaking, New Orleanians are gonna be itching to get out of the air conditioning and back into the sun. And while there’s tons of stuff to do here in the city, we’re blessed to live in the Gulf South, which features literally hundreds of festivals, arts markets, classic car shows, parish and county fairs and more throughout the fall. Here are just a handful of some of the best events happening within just a short drive from home!

LOUISIANA SUGAR CANE FESTIVAL

SEPT. 21-24 | Downtown New Iberia hisugar.org

This year is the 80th Louisiana Sugar Cane Festival, featuring parades, music, food and more. In addition to the regular Tractor Parade on Friday evening, there’s the Blessing of the Crop, a children’s parade, the Sweet Harvest Car Show, and the annual Queen Sugar and King Sucrose Parade Sunday.

The festival also will include music Friday and Saturday, with performances

by The Chee-Weez, Spank the Monkey, Geno Delafose & French Rockin’ Boogie, Chris Ardoin and more, plus food and carnival rides at the street fair.

BUTTERFLIES IN THE PASS MONARCH FESTIVAL

Not every festival has to feature carnival rides, beers and cover bands — or be an all-day affair. Take the Butterflies in the Pass Monarch Festival, the Biggest Little Lepidoptera-themed Festival in the South.

According to organizers, the goal of the festival is to celebrate “Monarch butterflies and other pollinators and what we can do to help them thrive.” Running from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the festival will feature a pet-friendly butterfly costume parade, talks about Monarch butterflies and other pollinators by Mississippi researchers, kids activities and a special butterfly-themed edition of the Passe’s weekly arts market. CRUISIN’ THE COAST

Billing itself as the country’s largest block party, Cruisin’ the Coast is in its 27th year and going as strong as ever. A mashup of a classic car show, swamp meet, ’50s greaser cosplay event and nostalgic low-riding down the boulevard, Cruisin’ the Coast features some of the finest muscle cars, ’50s greaser rock cover bands and dad bods the South has to offer. The event is BIG — last year more than 9,600 cars were registered in the cruise — and takes place up and down the coast, from Bay St. Louis to Biloxi

LOUISIANA CATTLE FESTIVAL & FAIR

Originally dubbed the Dairy Festival, the annual Louisiana Cattle Festival has been held since 1949 and features three days of music, exhibitions, parades and more. How much more? Well, there’s a “Baby Show,” a cooking contest and the Queen’s pageant, a livestock show, street fair, youth BB gun tournament and a fais do-do in the streets of Abbeville.

This year’s musical lineup includes Geno Delafose & French Rockin’ Boogie, Dustin Sonnier & The Wanted, The Envies, Swampland Revival and more.

FESTIVALS ACADIENS ET CREOLES

With the demise of Voodoo Fest, Lafayette’s annual Festivals Acadians is by far the fall’s biggest music and culture festival in Louisiana. The free, three-day celebration of Cajun culture is in its 39th year and this year will honor the King of Zydeco, Clifton Chenier, including opening night sets by Roddie Romero and the Hub City All-stars and Corey Ledet and His Zydeco Band. Chenier’s son C.J. and the Red Hot Louisiana Band will pay tribute to the king Saturday.

Other acts include the Daiquiri Queens, Steve Riley & the Mamou Playboys, Geno Delafose & French Rockin’ Boogie, Donny Broussard & the Louisiana Stars, Chubby Carrier & the Bayou Swamp Band, the Pine Leaf Boys, Cameron Dupuy & the Cajun Troubadours and many more across its four stages.

But the festival isn’t just about music.

Dozens of food vendors and artists will also be on hand, plus the festival hosts classes on Cajun language and music, talks by culture bearers and historians and so much more.

BRIDGE CITY GUMBO FESTIVAL

Back in 1973, Gov. Edwin Edwards declared Bridge City the “Gumbo Capital of the World,” and ever since the city has been hosting its annual festival celebrating, well, gumbo. There’s gumbo, music, gumbo, the presentation of the new Miss Creole Gumbo, gumbo, carnival rides and, of course, gumbo!

Now in its 50th year, the festival has grown significantly, both in size and representation. Just as the city has become increasingly diverse thanks to its growing Latinx population, so have the offerings at the fest. Latin music, food and artists are now prominent parts of this fun small-town festival just a few minutes from New Orleans.

THE 33RD ANNUAL GAUTIER MULLET FESTIVAL Oct. 21 | Hwy. 90 and Dolphin Road, Gautier, Mississippi gautiermulletfestival.com

If you’ve never thrown a mullet competitively, have you truly lived? There’s only really one way to know for sure: by moseying on down Highway 90 for

the Gautier Mullet Festival. This year’s one-day event is jam packed with all the entertainment and activities the modern mullet tosser has come to expect: There’s a pet parade and costume competition, a car and motorcycle show, competitive cosplay (!), vendors, an arts competition, music and, of course, the world’s finest mullet tossing event this side of the Alabama-Florida border.

NATCHEZ BALLOON FESTIVAL

Started in 1986, the Natchez Balloon Festival is one of South Mississippi’s biggest festivals. As you may have guessed, it features a hot air balloon race, but it also boasts carnival rides, local food vendors, a football-themed sports tent and live music. This year’s lineup includes The Suffers, Sister Hazel, Bag of Donuts, Fleetwood Mac cover band Rumours, Kevin and the Blues Groovers and Elanore Swede.

FESTIVAL OF THE BONFIRES

One of the most magical Christmas traditions in our region is the annual Christmas Levee Bonfires on the banks of the Mississippi River. St. James Parish has long been the epicenter for this tradition, and the annual Festival of the Bonfires combines the nightly fire lightings with music, food and fun.

Located in Lutcher, this year’s festival also features gumbo, potato salad and bread pudding competitions, two nights of live music, free shuttles to the levees to watch the fires, a fireworks show on Saturday night, a children’s pageant and a special Santa Festival, among loads of other activities.

IF NEW ORLEANIANS ONCE TRACED

the year through tentpole music festivals, it would normally start in October with major events like the Voodoo Music + Arts Experience. As of 2022, though, Voodoo has been on indefinite hiatus — as has spring’s BUKU — and that has left a new hole in the fall calendar.

While a successor hasn’t yet swooped in to snag up the role of bringing major touring acts through City Park, there’s still plenty of music on the calendar, often in smaller packages. And that includes new fests and efforts to keep the music going.

Gretna Fest is still a massive festival filling the downtown blocks of Gretna. Its formula typically has been to combine some rock and pop legends with a mix of touring and local bands. This year, the three-day event, Oct. 6-8, is headlined by Lynryd Skynyrd, Kool & The Gang and Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue. The lineup also features Lukas Nelson & Power of the Real, The Temptations, Lee Brice, Ashley McBryde, Trampled by Turtles, Los Lobos, Blues Traveler, Living Color and more. A number of great New Orleans-based acts also perform, including Irma Thomas, Dumpstaphunk, The Iceman Special, Chapel Hart, Delfeayo Marsalis, Dwayne Dopsie, Water Seed, Kermit Ruffins and more.

October also will see a number of genre-specific festivals around the city. The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation’s free Crescent City Blues & BBQ Festival returns to Lafayette Square on Oct. 13-15

with two stages. The lineup includes Tab Benoit, Lurrie Bell, Samantha Fish, Little Freddie King, Shemekia Copeland and more. The NOLA Funk Fest on Oct. 20-22 will feature three stages at the New Orleans Jazz Museum and many of the city’s funk giants. The lineup includes a Meters tribute with Leo Nocentelli, the Krasno/Moore Project, George Porter Jr., Big Sam’s Funky Nation, Ivan Neville and more. Gentilly Fest celebrates local music on two stages at Pontchartrain Park. Treme Fall Festival highlights an array of local music on Oct. 21 at St. Augustine’s Church.

The family-friendly Que Pasa Fest on Oct. 7-8 in Metairie’s Lafreniere Park will celebrate Hispanic heritage with local and visiting musicians. L.O.C.A.L.S. Fest returns to Armstrong Park on Oct. 21 with Raw Revolution, Vegas Cola, Jamal Batiste and more. The new Dark City Fest will focus on goth and industrial music with shows Oct. 20-22 at Siberia, Hi-Ho Lounge and the AllWays Lounge & Cabaret. And Sister Nancy tops this year’s NOLA Reggae Fest on Oct. 27-29 at Congo Square along with sets by The Meditations, Tanto Metro & Devonte and more.

Tourism organization New Orleans & Co. has designated October as New Orleans Music Month and starts things off Sept. 28 through Oct. 8 with the return of NOLA X NOLA, a promotion of concerts happening at a number of venues around the city.

And bookending the month is NOLA MusiCon, a new conference Oct. 24-27 focused on the New Orleans music economy.

Baby Cajun Joint is a new seafood spot in Gentilly | by Beth D’Addono WHEN TONY ZHENG WALKED AWAY FROM THE RESTAURANT BUSINESS in

2018, he thought it was for good.

Zheng had put in more than two decades in hospitality, working his way through the ranks until he opened his first restaurant, Sake Cafe, in Metairie in 1999, and a second location on Magazine Street in 2001. He sold the businesses in 2015 and opened a ramen shop in Riverbend in 2018, but it shuttered six months later.

Along with two partners, Zheng went in a completely different direction, importing soil for cannabis production in Texas.

So what is he doing opening a new seafood restaurant, Baby Cajun Joint?

“I found the right partners I guess,” Zheng says. “This business, it gets in your blood and it’s hard to get it out. I had time on my hands with my other business, and I figured, why not?”

Baby Cajun opened June 26 in Gentilly at 5226 Elysian Fields Ave., the former home to China Tea Garden Zheng’s partners are his friends Harrison and Jenifer Vo and Anthony Cooper, a New Orleans native who has been working in kitchens since he was 16. The Vos are siblings who grew up around hospitality and seafood in New Orleans. Several of their Vietnamese kin have corner stores and their late father was the captain of a commercial tuna fishing boat.

“All our uncles and aunts are in the seafood industry,” Jenifer Vo says.

Her brother, who works full time for an accounting firm, helps in the restaurant when he can, and Jenifer Vo manages the front of the house.

Cooper and Zheng handle things in the kitchen.

Zheng also is friends with the owner of the space, who got in touch when Chinese Tea Garden closed. “I knew I didn’t want to do sushi,” he says. “So I was thinking, what doesn’t the neighborhood have already?”

A seafood boil house was the answer. Jenifer Vo came up with the name. “Everybody calls each other ‘Baby’ here,” she says, “I thought it was catchy.”

Baby’s purpose is clear, thanks to a huge mural of a boil with all the fixings. The large dining room has a casual and modern vibe, with clean lines and seating for 130 guests.

There are a variety of fresh seafood options, with shrimp, blue crab and seasonal crawfish sourced locally. Diners can order shrimp heads on or off. There also are snow crab legs, king crab legs and lobster tail available by the pound or piece, served with Cooper’s favorite smoked Double D sausage, corn, potatoes and boiled eggs in the mix.

Diners can choose one of Zheng and Cooper’s house-made sauces, such as garlic butter, lemon pepper or Thai citrus, and their preferred level of spicy heat, from medium to extra hot. A $115 seafood platter is enough to feed a hungry party of four.

There’s also more than boiled seafood, and Zheng’s Hong Kong roots show up in a few Chinese dishes, such as four versions of fried rice. There are stir fries of orange chicken or spicy garlic shrimp and chicken or shrimp lo mein.

The seafood gumbo has a local touch and is popular. “It’s my mom’s recipe,” Jenifer Vo says.

Baskets of fried seafood are served with fries or fried rice. Chicken wings come with Korean barbecue, lemon pepper, sweet teriyaki or Polynesian sweet chili sauce. Daily lunch specials range from $10-$12, with options like chicken wings or tenders, bang bang shrimp and fried catfish, flounder or trout. The kids’ menu offers tenders,

MICHAEL GULOTTA’S MODERN FUSION RESTAURANT MAYPOP BLENDS FLAVORS

in a way that can make you wonder if it’s Asian fusion, Italian fusion or something else entirely. But for two weeks this month, Maypop will be unambiguously Italian as it hosts an extended preview of Gulotta’s next restaurant.

TANA is billed as an ambitious and upscale Italian restaurant and has been taking shape in Old Metairie since 2022.

It’s now slated to open in November.

From Sept. 11 to Sept. 24, the regular Maypop menu will be replaced by a sampling of dishes in the running for the opening menu at TANA. Look for dishes like cobia crudo, cheesy focaccia (“with muffuletta filling”), squid ink tagliatelle with clams and hot sausage, pappardelle with lamb ragu, roasted chicken and veal chop Parmesan.

A private room for parties will open soon, along with off-site catering options. There’s a full bar, with two for one cocktails and beer from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. daily.

No one knows better than Zheng that opening a restaurant is a challenge, let alone in summer.

“I think it’s better to start a little slow and build the business,” he says.

“I’ve survived many summers, so I know it’s going to pick up. So far, so good.”

This is a boundary-pushing restaurant with a narrative of entwined African heritage, modern American cuisine, family, community and a way with spice.

As before, it is a tasting menu only restaurant, serving a seven-course dinner with one seating per night for $150 per person. A shorter, less costly three-course menu served on Wednesdays has been discontinued as the restaurant reopens, and the restaurant will keep its full concept throughout the week. An “early bird” menu is in the works as well.

Dakar NOLA now has a liquor license and has pairings available. An expanded pastry program, set to begin in October, includes customizable cakes for special occasions. And the restaurant also collaborated with its Magazine Street neighbor Potsalot Pottery to make custom plates for each course.

Sally’s on hiatus

THE USUAL SUMMER SLOWDOWN FOR THE HOSPITALITY BUSINESS has been

especially brutal this year, with many restaurant people saying it’s been the slowest for business in memory.

That has forced some big changes in operations. The latest sees the Oak Street modern seafood standout Seafood Sally’s shutting down for about a month to try to corral costs until fall, when business typically rises.

The final push was an order from state health regulators to replace the restaurant’s kitchen floor, says chef and co-owner Marcus Jacobs.

The restaurant recently changed its business filing, which triggered a new inspection under recently revised requirements, as if it were a newly opening restaurant.

“The level of repairs we need to do, versus the level of business we’ve been doing this summer, means we can’t keep going,” Jacobs says. “We need to control our costs to figure out how we do this.”

He says Seafood Sally’s will return, likely near the end of September.

That’s good news, because Seafood Sally’s has been a breath of fresh (if also briny) air for local seafood lovers.

It’s a casual restaurant that goes the distance for sourcing more interesting and more sustainable segments of the local catch, and prepares it in flavorful ways.

Harrell cooks in Covington

THE SOUTHERN HOTEL IN COVINGTON UNVEILED THE ELEGANT NEW Gloriette

last year after a big renovation of its restaurant space. Now the Gloriette has a new chef at the helm.

Alex Harrell is now its executive chef.

He takes over from Steven Marsella, who came to the Gloriette from Creole Cuisine Restaurant Concepts. He’s since returned to that New Orleansbased restaurant group.

The Gloriette is a hotel restaurant that feels like it was aimed at locals, who have made the Southern Hotel as much a downtown social club as lodgings for travelers.

The restaurant serves a blend of classic French and contemporary Louisiana flavors, in a room with big windows, light colors and many details. Don’t expect any big changes in the format or menu to begin, though Harrell says he wants to bring in more of the Southern influences for which he is known.

“It’s an opportunity to explore a different part of the area and meet and get to know a different part of the clientele,” he says.

Harrell was previously executive chef for the Virgin Hotel and its restaurant Commons Club. He made his name at Sylvain in the French Quarter before

developing his own restaurant Angeline as chef/owner from 2015 to 2018.

Angeline distinguished itself with menus that were strongly Southern, but not scripted, and an approach that was original but also down to earth in concept, composition and flavor.

After Angeline closed, Harrell became executive chef at the Elysian Bar, the restaurant at the Hotel Peter & Paul in Faubourg Marigny, before opening the Commons Club in 2021.

Cooking now on the Northshore, the chef says he’s looking forward to working with more of the local producers in the area to supply his menus.

“It gets me closer to some of the farmers that are on the Northshore and explore what’s there for growers and producers,” he says.

The Southern Hotel is approaching the 10th year since this historic property made its return in 2014, and it is in the midst of an expansion, with a 25-room addition called the Summer House taking shape next door.

In New Orleans, Harrell’s work continues with local chapter of Ben’s Friends that he helped start, which provides support for restaurant and hospitality workers who are sober or working to get sober. Those meetings continue each Monday at 10:30 am at the Chloe.

up in Seattle, hooked on Asian dishes. After culinary school, he worked for 13 years at a number of Tom Douglas’ restaurants in Seattle. Then five years ago, he moved here and has cooked at Coquette, Cavan, Sylvain and now The Steakhouse. Why did you start the pop-up?

CHRIS HAMM: I want to bring teriyaki and that culture to New Orleans.

In Seattle, there are lots of teriyaki shops, and you can go get a teriyaki plate or a yakisoba plate. And you can get gyoza and egg rolls. I am just trying to bring that shop vibe to this area.

Teriyaki is grilled chicken with the sauce. I feel like southern Louisiana is so into chicken and rice with a gravy.

This is just a different way to look at it.

It’s the food I grew up eating. It makes me happy.

What’s on your menu?

H: I am using a lot of traditional Japanese techniques, which I am passionate about.

I have been getting a case of chickens and breaking them down — using the leg quarters for the teriyaki and the breasts for katsu. I make a broth with the bones and try to serve that as a thank you, like a sipping broth.

I am trying to do one vegetable dish and something cold. The cold item has been a tomato salad recently. I love charred cabbage. The last one was with a chili crisp aioli or chili crisp vinaigrette with a bunch of herbs.

The teriyaki is a boned-out leg and thigh quarter, and it comes with rice and a salad. It’s grilled and braised.

I serve it with a little of the furikake and scallions.

My teriyaki (sauce) is more like a tare. It’s soy, sake and mirin, and I roast ginger, scallions and garlic in a pan, but I have chicken backs on top of that, so there’s chicken flavor

in the sauce as well. You see it a lot in ramen shops, and they use aromatic oil. We’ll grill thighs and dip them in the sauce and put them back on the grill so you get nice caramelization.

I did a chicken katsu plate. You pound it, you bread it. Chicken with a cabbage salad and a side of rice.

We made furikake, but with crispy chicken skin in there to try to utilize all of the bird.

I did a charred cabbage but with the flavor profiles of okonomiyaki. In Japan it comes with Bull-Dog sauce. I serve mine with bull-hog sauce, which I make myself.

Wings are fried wings with teriyaki sauce on the side and sunomono pickles.

The first pop-up was with Andrew Lu at Get Your Mom + Dim Sum. I did one with Justin (Natori) from Last Bite (at Bywater Brew Pub). Bywater Brew Pub invited us back.

What would you like to do as the pop-up grows?

H: I eventually want to do a chicken ramen and stuff like that. I want to have fun with the chickens and eventually do other things. I’d like to do a charred octopus with a charred eggplant puree with shio koji, purple daikon, puffed rice and purple oxalis.

Chicken has this reputation like it can’t really be that good. But with proper technique, I think you can do some amazing things. Even just a really good broth is so satisfying.

Wess ‘Warmdaddy’ Anderson

At Branford Marsalis’ urging, alto saxophonist Wess “Warmdaddy” Anderson picked up from his home in Brooklyn, New York, to head to Southern University to study with Alvin Batiste. Soon after, he hit the road with Wynton Marsalis and spent the late-’80s and early-’90s in Marsalis’ septet. Today, along with still playing the Marsalis’ The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra band, Anderson leads his own groups, performing a style that ranges from traditional New Orleans jazz to hard bop akin to Cannonball Adderley. The Anderson quintet performs at 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.

If it’s mid-September, then it’s time to celebrate the birth of Melissa “DJ Soul Sister” Weber. Family ‘Connection’

WHILE IN HIGH SCHOOL, ORLANDO GILBERT GOT A HANDLE on New Orleans brass

band songs like “Paul Barbarin’s Second Line” and “Gimme My Money Back” playing alongside his father, John “Prince” Gilbert, in the Treme Brass Band at standing Tuesday night gigs at d.b.a.

But it wasn’t until he was working in London during the pandemic that he realized how meaningful his connections to New Orleans’ music were.

“I was working for this school, World Heart Beat Music Academy,” Gilbert says. “They had me teaching New Orleans music. The students had already learned ‘Do Whatcha Wanna,’ and I was like, ‘do you know who was one of the members of that group?’ I was like, ‘people across the world are playing my father’s music, but they don’t know who my father is.’ So I decided, it’s time to make an album to try to lift him up while also making my debut.”

Orlando and John Gilbert celebrated the release of the album, “A Crescent City Connection,” with a show at Vaughan’s Lounge during Labor Day weekend. Orlando Gilbert continues Saturday night shows at Vaughan’s through September, mixing traditional New Orleans brass band songs and contemporary jazz originals.

“A Crescent City Connection” is bookended by songs featuring John Gilbert. The albums’ final two songs, “Freedom” and “Do Whatcha Wanna” are Rebirth Brass Band classics. John Gilbert was an early Rebirth member who is featured on the original recording of “Do Whatcha Wanna.”

“We Gunna Have a Good Time” is a cover of a song written by Shamarr Allen and John Gilbert, and built on one of Gilbert’s saxophone riffs.

“My dad is one of the great innovators of New Orleans’ brass band saxophone tradition,” Orlando Gilbert says.

John Gilbert spent much of his early career with Rebirth, later joined New Birth Brass Band, and has spent the last decade with Treme, where he’s handled more lead singing.

Most songs feature different lineups, and contributors include Shannon Powell on drums and Chris Severin on bass. Orlando Gilbert’s “New Orleans Party” is steeped in New Orleans traditional sounds and local references, and features Herlin Riley on drums.

who provided use of the space. Last week, Andrews brought Orlando Gilbert to Miami to play in his band in a tribute to Lil Wayne at BMI’s R&B/HipHop Awards.

The Gilberts share saxophone parts on many tracks. But the more modern jazz tune, “Wildman” has Orlando paired with his mentor Donald Harrison Jr. Gilbert met Harrison in the Tipitina’s Internship Program, and that helped propel him to the Berklee College of Music.

At Berklee, Gilbert studied under Bill Pierce, who had played in Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers with Harrison, Terence Blanchard and Wynton Marsalis. The tune “Messenger Interlude” is an homage to some of those mentors.

“Lilt and Chime” is a sophisticated modern piece composed by pianist Karen Shiraishi, who plays on most of the album’s tracks.

One of the most moving works on the album is the ballad “When You Stopped My Heart,” which Orlando wrote during the pandemic. While battling Covid complications in the hospital, John Gilbert’s heart stopped beating for nearly two minutes, Orlando Gilbert says.

That scare underscored the impulse to make the album.

“The album was about how New Orleans’ musical families and family connections are so important to the city,” Orlando Gilbert says. “This album is supposed to shine a little light on this musical interaction that’s so important for our culture. I wanted to show the progression of a lineage. I have had all these different experiences and been able to come back and share that with my father and all these different people.”
