THE LALAURIE MANSION AT 1140 ROYAL ST. is a common stop for ghost

and vampire tours in the French Quarter. While those tales reference the home’s most infamous occupant, Delphine LaLaurie and her abuse of slaves, the building (renovated after an 1834 fire) was used as a school during Reconstruction following the Civil War. It was integrated, with black and white children attending classes together. In 1874, the White League sought to end integrated education in New Orleans.

The disturbances caused the White League (also responsible for the Battle of Liberty Place) are just offstage and spill into a neighboring residence in “The Uninvited,” an immersive historical drama from Goat in the Road Productions and the Herman-Grima + Gallier Historic Houses. The drama is designed for and plays out at Gallier House (1132 Royal St.), the home of Aglae and James Gallier Jr. The story takes place in one evening at the home in 1874 and involves several Galliers, servants in the home and acquaintances of all of them.

“The Uninvited” runs Jan. 9-Feb. 14, and audience members can choose to follow any of the nine characters watch the action from particular rooms as scenes play out simultaneously. Each presentation features two runs of the 40-minute drama, so audiences can follow different characters and see the story from different perspectives. The action extends from the parlor and kitchen to a bedroom, balcony and courtyard.

“The parlor is naturally theatrical,” says Kiyoko McCrae, who co-directs the show and is one of its five authors. “It’s an ornate, big room, and its easy to focus on what happens there, but lots of important stuff takes place in the kitchen. There’s kind of an upstairs-downstairs effect.”

designed many notable New Orleans buildings, including Gallier Hall. The younger Gallier died in 1868, and in “The Uninvited,” his widow, Aglae, and two of the four Gallier daughters, Leonie and Blanche, are adjusting to the financial and social changes.

New Orleans was in turmoil during Reconstruction. Federal troops were stationed throughout the Southern states that joined the Confederacy.

Newly enfranchised black voters elected many black legislators and brought Republican rule to many areas. White Leagues formed to challenge the occupation and reinstate political control by white people.

“The Uninvited” takes place against the backdrop of the era’s racial strife, but the work explores the lives of the historical and fictional people at the Gallier home. Aglae is fighting to maintain the family’s standing, and the women’s independence and the suffrage movement are emerging across the U.S. Also visiting the home is Eamon, a wealthy suiter, pursuing Blanche, but she doesn’t have strong feelings for him. Charity and Rene work as servants in the Gallier household. Rose is a teacher at the school. Moses works as a reporter for a local newspaper.

active in the White League.

“The Uninvited” is Goat in the Road’s second immersive, period-set drama. In March and April 2018, the company presented “The Stranger Disease” at the Louisiana State Museum’s Madam John’s Legacy property, a historic French colonial-style building at 632 Dumaine St. That drama looked at life in the French Quarter at the outbreak of a yellow fever epidemic in 1878. The work won four Big Easy theater awards, including Best Play and Best Original Work of Theater.

city’s lowest homicide rate in nearly 50 years, according to statistics from crime analyst Jeff Asher and local database builder Alexa Surinck. The two reported 119 homicides during the past year, a drop of 20% from the 146 killings in 2018. It could mean New Orleans will drop out of the nation’s top 5 list of deadliest cities for the first time since 1986.

Federally audited crime figures will be released in September.

The approximate amount of money spent on the 2019 Louisiana governor’s race, according to the latest round of campaign finance reports.

Waste Management Inc.’s lawsuit against River Birch Inc. was revived by a U.S. Supreme Court ruling in December.

RIVER BIRCH OWNERS HEADED FOR TRIAL Tulane University contrib-

utes $3.14 billion to the Louisiana economy annually and employs more than 19,000 people statewide, according to a study released by Philadelphia-based Econsult Solutions. Tulane is New Orleans’ largest private employer.

The study shows that in New Orleans, Tulane has provided 13,934 jobs and generated about $312 million in spending by parents, alumni, potential students and patients at its medical facilities.

Rex and the krewes of Centurions and Excalibur

have signed agreements with Arc of Greater New Orleans (ArcGNO) to buy recycled Mardi Gras beads for their organizations’ 2020 parades. The krewes said they made the move to be more environmentally responsible, save their members money and to support the 66-year-old ArcGNO, which helps individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

THE U.S. SUPREME COURT HAS CLEARED THE WAY for a civil racketeering trial in which River Birch landfill owners Fred Heebe and Jim Ward are accused of bribing former Mayor Ray Nagin to maintain control over the local debris disposal market.

That trial, which is expected to last two weeks, is set for Nov. 2 before U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier.

Last month, the nation’s high court declined to take up an appeal by Heebe and Ward to have the case dismissed. National garbage hauler Waste Management sued River Birch in 2011.

The suit centers on the Chef Menteur landfill in New Orleans East, which Waste Management opened in the months after Hurricane Katrina as trash companies vied for a share of a debris bonanza. Nagin used his emergency authority as mayor to grant the landfill a zoning waiver and indicated publicly that he would extend permission for as long as needed.

Shortly after he was re-elected in May 2006, however, Nagin declined to renew the waiver, forcing the landfill to close. Waste Management attributes Nagin’s about-face to four $5,000 campaign contributions, routed through shell companies, that Heebe and Ward made to the mayor in the waning days of his campaign. The suit alleges those payments were bribes.

A consultant hired by Waste Management estimated the closure of the landfill cost the company $50 million.

In some ways, the racketeering suit tracks a long-running federal criminal probe into Heebe, Ward and River Birch that was dropped in 2013. Investigators appeared to be trying to prove that the men were using bogus companies to get around campaign finance laws and exert undue influence over local politics.

Heebe and Ward were never charged, and the U.S. Department of Justice announced it was abandoning the inquiry in the wake of misconduct by several federal prosecutors involved in the investigation.

The two men still rank among the most prolific donors to Louisiana political campaigns but now primarily give to super PACs. The River Birch owners had succeeded in neutering Waste Management’s suit in late 2017, when U.S. District Judge Kurt Engelhardt ruled

The total was the most in the state’s history, easily surpassing the $50 million spent in the 2015 governor’s race. The three top candidates spent and raised nearly $47 million in the 2019 race, with the rest of the money coming from political action committees.

Waste Management appealed the ruling and the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals — where Engelhardt now sits — overturned it and found in a 2-1 decision that the lawsuit’s allegations deserved a hearing.

Lawsuit seeks better method for expungements

Years after their last night in a jail cell on relatively minor charges, many Louisiana residents are trailed by arrests and convictions. Homes and jobs stay out of reach because of a $550 fee required to wipe their criminal records clean — and what advocates say is an overly complicated process to do so.

A recent lawsuit aims to upend the state’s process for expunging old criminal records. Indigent plaintiffs want a federal judge to order the state to create a streamlined process for the poor to apply for fee waivers.

The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Baton Rouge in December, is the latest courtroom attack on Louisiana’s “user pays” criminal justice system, which relies on fines and fees from defendants to balance the books.

Two advocacy groups, the First 72+ and the Washington, D.C., nonprofit law firm Equal Justice Under Law, brought it on behalf of three people who argue they can’t afford the fees.

“We want the district attorneys to waive expungement fees for those who can’t afford them,” said Phil Telfeyan, executive director of Equal Justice Under Law. “The state has stated that old convictions that are more than 10 years old, that are nonviolent offenses, should be expunged. This is really simply a matter of the processing fee.”

Expungements are free for people who are trying to clear arrests and don’t have felony convictions. There’s also a provision in state law for filing a request as a pauper. But the lawsuit claims the process for pleading poverty is rife with “shortcomings and confusion and DAs around the state seem to have a hodgepodge of policies and practices.

Most states allow people who have been arrested for or convicted of certain crimes to “expunge” their records, meaning the records are blocked from public view (they don’t come up on employers’ and landlords’ background checks) but remain accessible to law enforcement and government agencies.

Generally speaking, Louisiana allows people to expunge misdemeanor convictions and some nonvi-

olent felony convictions after five or 10 years. Arrests that don’t lead to convictions also are eligible.

An expungement costs just $30 in Maryland, but in Louisiana it comes with a $550 price tag. Advocates say Louisiana charges the nation’s highest expungement fee — and it only covers a single “record event,” like one day in court. Since one contact with the criminal justice system often leads to others, the cost of a fully clean slate can rise quickly.

The suit lists Attorney General Jeff Landry, East Baton Rouge Parish Clerk of Court Doug Welborn and East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore as defendants and aims to add all the state’s clerks and prosecutors.

Moore declined to comment on the lawsuit but said he has proposed shifting Louisiana to a no-fee, automatic expungement process that uses computer software to identify and expunge eligible offenses.

Moore backed a “clean slate” bill in the Louisiana Legislature’s 2019 session, but it was pulled.

Meeting to address controversial Mandeville hotel complex proposal Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser will speak to Northshore residents at a meeting Wednesday, Jan. 8, about a controversial proposal to build a 150-room hotel and conference center on state land next to Fontainebleau State Park.

The meeting is at 6 p.m. at Mandeville’s Paul R. Spitzfaden Community Center.

The St. Tammany Parish Tourist and Convention Commission ordered a $28,000 feasibility study on the project by Tennessee consulting firm Pinkowski & Co., which projected the lodging and conference center would generate almost $2 million annually.

Some residents and local leaders are not sold on the idea, however, citing environmental concerns and a struggling hotel industry in the area.

The Clarion Inn & Suites Conference Center in Covington, which was St. Tammany Parish’s largest full-service hotel, closed in May 2019.

Nungesser has long expressed his support for partnerships between state parks and private companies as a way to bring in money for park upkeep amid budget cuts and needed repairs.

Fontainebleau State Park is one of the few state parks in Louisiana that is self-supporting, bringing in around $1.3 million annually while costing about $1.2 million to maintain. .

NEW ORLEANS ENDED THE YEAR 2019 with some seriously good news

on the crime front: For the second year in a row, the number of killings in the city has fallen — and not by marginal numbers, either. Last year saw the lowest violent death toll in the city in nearly half a century.

In 2016, there were 174 killings in New Orleans. In 2017, that number dropped to 157. In 2018, it fell again, to 146. This past year, New Orleans had 119 homicides, according to unofficial statistics kept by criminologist and City Council crime adviser Jeff Asher.

That’s still far too many; one is too many. But longtime residents, particularly those who lived here in the 1990s, would have welcomed such numbers — and found them hard to believe. In 1994, New Orleans saw a staggering 424 murders, and the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) was seen, accurately, as out of control.

There have been many changes in the city and the NOPD since then.

Killings decreased sharply after NOPD Superintendent Richard Pennington took over the department in late 1994, then went back up again around the turn of the millennium. The post-Katrina years saw another spike in per capita killings as the city’s population shrank, followed by a 2011 U.S. Justice Department report on NOPD that led to the 2013 federal consent decree.

Former Mayor Mitch Landrieu and current Mayor LaToya Cantrell made violent crime reduction a cornerstone of their mayoralties, as have Police Chiefs Ronal Serpas, Michael Harrison and current Chief Shaun Ferguson. Under Landrieu and Serpas, the Multi-Agency Gang

Unit — formed in 2012 — focused on the city’s most violent offenders, a strategy continued by Cantrell and subsequent chiefs.

Detractors who can never focus on anything positive in the city undoubtedly will point to an overall decrease in violent crime in American cities in the last generation. They’ll say that improved medical services have saved lives that otherwise might have perished — but those factors don’t adequately account for the reduction in New Orleans killings. As Chief Ferguson noted, violent crime overall is down in the city, not just the number of murders.

Chicago, another city with a historically corrupt police department and a violent reputation (one stoked by President Donald Trump), saw a 13% reduction in killings.

Baltimore, which has many of the same woes, saw no good news in violent crime statistics in 2019. (The Baltimore Police Department got a good chief in Harrison when he was hired away from New Orleans in March, but he’s got a lot of work to do there.)

Ferguson is taking a measured tone in response to the latest good news. In a statement lauding NOPD and other “stakeholders,” Cantrell chose to emphasize the positive, but noted, “There is always more work to be done.”

Indeed there is. The city saw its first killing of 2020 on New Year’s Day in New Orleans East. It’s incumbent on Cantrell, Ferguson and the rest of us to continue the trend of reduced homicides — and violence of every sort — in the new year.

much can go sideways for so many reasons. Only two things appear certain at this point: Gov. John Bel Edwards will have an even tougher time with the Legislature going forward than he had during this first term; and we’re headed for a very busy election season.

The Democratic governor locked horns with the GOP-controlled House of Representatives at almost every turn after he took office in January 2016. It began with the House’s refusal to elect then-Rep. Walt Leger III of New Orleans as speaker. Leger, a Democrat, was Edwards’ chosen candidate for the job.

For generations, the House went through the motions of choosing its own speaker, but the governor typically got his or her way. No longer.

This go-round, Edwards is publicly taking a hands-off approach to the speaker’s race.

House Republicans have some internal rifts, but Rep. Sherman Mack has emerged as the front-runner to be speaker. His aim is to win without having to count on any Democratic votes. That’s a big neon sign telegraphing what’s to come: Washington-style partisanship on virtually every issue.

In his first term, Edwards usually could count on the more moderate Senate to be his backstop. That, too, has changed. All moderate Republican senators are gone — most of them retired by term limits — and several Democratic senators likewise are gone. All were replaced by hardright-leaning Republicans, which compounds Edwards’ difficulty in the next four years.

Meanwhile, when we’re not being bombarded by partisan messages from Baton Rouge and Washington,

we should expect lots of campaign missives going into the November elections. The presidential race will top the ballot, and the re-election bid of U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy, a Republican, could become an interesting statewide contest.

A host of local elections will fill out the November ballot. Here’s a peek at some of them: • Louisiana Chief Justice Bernette J. Johnson cannot seek re-election to the state Supreme Court, having reached the mandatory retirement age of 70. Johnson’s black-majority district (the only one on the sevenmember High Court) is based in New Orleans, and the race to succeed her could attract a large field.

• New Orleans District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro is up for re-election, as are all Louisiana DAs. Cannizzaro stands out because he’s vulnerable in the wake of the “fake subpoena” flap, his office’s arrest of some victims to get them to testify, and recent revelations that his office has dropped at least 80% of misdemeanor domestic violence cases. One political group already has paid for a billboard promoting the hashtag #MoveOnLeon. Cannizzaro has not yet said if he will seek re-election, but At-Large City Councilman Jason Williams says he’s running. Others may join him.

• District judges are on the ballot across the state, and some will have no incumbents because of mandatory retirements. More than two dozen judgeships in New Orleans alone will be on the ballot.

• All seven seats on the Orleans Parish School Board will be up for grabs.

And that doesn’t count any special elections that may be called between now and November.

Lakeside Shopping Center opened its doors 60 years ago, with 13 stores as original tenants, including D.H. Holmes and several other Canal Street shopping mainstays such as Godchaux’s, Kreeger’s, Baker’s shoes and S.S. Kresge.

Other original merchants were J.C. Penney (which remains an anchor tenant), Arnold’s Men’s Wear, Paris Hats, Schiff’s Shoes, Western Auto, Wright’s Tailors, Sutton’s Fairyland and Winn-Dixie grocery store.

Those businesses opened on March 24, 1960, with the mall’s official dedication and grand opening held Sept.

1. At that September event, 1,500 ping pong balls were dropped from a helicopter to the crowds below, redeemable for prizes from mall merchants.

By then more than a dozen other stores had opened at Lakeside, including Butler’s Shoes, Gordon’s and Hausmann’s jewelry stores, Lerner’s, Thom McAn Shoes and TG&Y. Lakeside originally was an outdoor mall on a 50-acre tract with 32 stores opening onto a central court. “The buildings are centered around a planted mall and have about 415,000

square feet of space,” The Times-Picayune reported on March 25, 1960.

“The exterior of the center is finished in light pastel colors. There is a large pool in the mall, which will have fountains cascading water against a background of colored lights.”

The newspaper reported on the mall’s ribbon cutting ceremony the previous day, which was attended by dignitaries including Jefferson Parish President Charles W. Spencer and the shopping center’s developer, Paul Kapelow. Spencer predicted the shopping center would be a boon to the parish and would draw customers from St. Tammany Parish, especially when the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway’s second span opened in 1969.

In 1968, the mall was enclosed and air-conditioned. Now owned by the Feil Organization, Lakeside covers 1.1 million square feet and has more than 130 stores and restaurants.

BLAKEVIEW FIFTY YEARS AGO THIS WEEK , New Orleans hosted its first Super Bowl, with

the Kansas City Chiefs defeating the Minnesota Vikings 28-7 in Super Bowl IV at Tulane Stadium.

The game was played on Jan. 11, 1970 before a crowd of nearly 81,000. The average ticket price was $15.

Entertainment included New Orleans natives Al Hirt and Marguerite Piazza, as well as Doc Severinsen, Lionel Hampton and the Southern University band.

The halftime show included costumed actors recreating the Battle of New Orleans, a Mardi Gras parade and a jazz funeral featuring the Onward and Olympia Brass Bands.

The NFL blacked out the CBS television broadcast of the game for the local audience, but WWL-TV replayed the game at midnight and again the next day.

After the game, city leaders immediately began to lobby the NFL to host future Super Bowls in the city. “Yesterday was a great day for New Orleans and we want many more like it,” Mayor Moon Landrieu said.

The NFL awarded the city the 1972 Super Bowl, and New Orleans has hosted 10 in all: three in Tulane Stadium and seven in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

New Orleans is tied with Miami, host of this year’s Super Bowl, as the most frequent host city. New Orleans hosts its next Super Bowl in 2024.

BY JAK E CL APP THERE’S A TOUCH OF SERENDIPITY IN THE FACT THAT LOUISIANA STATE UNIVERSITY’S HISTORIC 2019 FOOTBALL SEASON is coming to a head at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in a national championship game against current title holder Clemson.

Of course, it’s not the first time the Tigers have played for the national title in New Orleans. LSU has won all three of its title games in the Crescent City, first at the 1959 Sugar Bowl when the annual game was held at Tulane Stadium, and then on Jan. 4, 2004, and Jan. 7, 2008, inside the Superdome.

There also was that stinging loss against Alabama at the end of the 2011 season.

But LSU’s first appearance in the College Football Playoff National Championship game also coincides with the first time the Mercedes-Benz Superdome will host the game. A season marked by record-breaking perfor-

mances, a Heisman-winning quarterback and a gravel-voiced coach from literally down da bayou crosses the finish line just 80 or so miles southeast of Tiger Stadium.

(Let’s also add that Gov. John Bel Edwards will be sworn-in for his second term on the same day.)

Monday, Jan. 13. The game will be televised on ESPN. We’ve gathered a list of watch parties and special events around New Orleans along with a bar guide of well-loved spots around the city to catch the game with other LSU fans.

Tailgate Plaza (Jax Brewery parking lot, 600 Decatur St. and adjoining Woldenberg Park) — Performances by Nas, H.E.R. and MAX on Saturday, Jan. 11; Meghan Trainor, Bastille and Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue on Sunday, Jan. 12; and Tim McGraw and Judah & The Lion on Monday, Jan. 13. Along with the music stage, the area also features barbecue, zip lines and tailgating activities. Also worth noting: Louisiana native and Grammy-winner Lauren Daigle will sing the National Anthem before the game. Opens at 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday; noon on Monday.

Extra Yard 5K (Starts at Lafayette Square, 602 Camp St.) — The 5K run/walk goes through the French Quarter. Awards will be given to the top three finishers in each age group, and the top overall male and female will each win two tickets to the game. Registration is required; proceeds benefit Extra Yard for Teachers. $35 general registration, free for teachers with an educator ID. Opens at 8 a.m.

Eckrich Taste of the Championship (Mardi Gras World, 1380 Port of New Orleans Place) — Featuring more than 30 regional restaurants and bars serving samples from their menus. Pyre Provisions fires up the Northshore dining scene

BY R E B EC C A F R I E D M A N WHEN IT COMES TO PLAYING WITH FIRE , Pyre Provisions is all business.

The Covington restaurant, which opened in November, employs an original approach to wood-fired smoking, grilling and more.

Chef Jeff Mattia developed his style during stints in the kitchens of celebrity chefs Tom Colicchio and Todd English, as a sous chef at Restaurant August and as executive chef of The American Sector at the National World War II Museum. At Pyre, he uses barbecue and injecting techniques and draws on local ingredients and flavors from around the world.

While the cooking sounds perfect for a rustic setting, Pyre is in a suburban stretch, occupying the former home of Bacobar and surrounded by outlets like Winn-Dixie and Five Guys.

The restaurant’s interior is chic and attractive, with painted shiplap walls and natural wood accents.

Behind a curved bar, frozen drink machines swirl five concoctions made with fresh-squeezed juices and housemade syrups, including a Bacardi pomegranate mojito, a Cazadores satsuma margarita and a seasonal frose. The frozen drinks are a worthy holdover from Bacobar. Our server brought a tiny sample of each to aid our selection, and all were tasty.

The dinner menu offers several plates recommended for sharing, including za’atar-spiced lamb ribs and smoked duck hummus ($14 each).

The heap of tender ribs had a simple Mediterranean-style accompaniment of chickpeas and sliced cherry tomatoes. The hummus is made from black-eyed peas and served with a succulent, slow-cooked duck leg.

Grilled pita triangles added smokiness, and a handful of paper-thin carrots and radishes and microgreens brightened the plate. Those

small touches reflect Mattia’s fine dining background.

The menu has a selection of woodgrilled items, including a 16-ounce rib-eye ($32) that was flavorful and tender and a swordfish in a satsuma barbecue glaze ($21) that was solid but not as impressive as the meats.

From the smoked section, porchetta is a rolled and sliced combination of pork belly and loin that was tender and savory, nicely accented by mustard seeds, a soffrito of aromatic vegetables and creamy cheddar grits ($24).

Though Pyre can seem like a barbecue place, the kitchen prepares vegetables to rival the meats. A kale salad ($12) with aged cheddar cheese, apples, bourbon raisins, pecans and bagel croutons (plus a few other things) makes a short list of the area’s best salads. A broccolini and walnut accompaniment to the swordfish was delicious as well.

melted cheddar and sour cream oozing between every slice.

A brunch visit revealed more appetizing options including a knockout burger of Black Angus wagyu beef, with crisp thick-cut bacon, cheddar and a smoky sauce on a perfectly grilled bun ($14). The smashed breakfast hash also is worth getting up for, with fried potatoes, pork belly and brisket topped by a poached egg ($14).

Save room for hand pies filled with wood oven-roasted apples ($8 for two) and coffee and doughnuts, which includes three magically flaky beignets atop a bed of espresso chocolate cream ($10).

It’s worth following the smoke signals to Pyre Provisions.

“THIRTEENTH NIGHT” invites attendees to sample king cakes while supporting immigrants and asylum seekers. The fundraiser is 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7 at Molly’s Rise and Shine (2368 Magazine St.) and all proceeds go to Congreso de Jornaleros (Congress of Day Laborers), a local organization that provides aid to immigrants and asylum seekers in the New Orleans area.

The event is part of Cantine, a series of collaborative fundraising activities by participants including artists, chefs, bartenders, carpenters and others, says founder Sarah Town.

The first Cantine event was in October and raised $1,400 for Abuelas Responden/Grannies Respond, an organization that connects volunteers with immigrants and asylum seekers, providing care packages of basic necessities and other assistance.

Congreso de Jornaleros’ services include hosting informational sessions about legal rights and providing assistance with asylum applications.

The group rallied on Dec. 18 to protest the deportation of Joel Ramirez Palma, the worker who was on site when the Hard Rock Hotel collapsed and was subsequently deported to his native Honduras.

At Thirteenth Night, attendees can make a donation and receive a raffle ticket good for a chance at one of 13 spots in a game of musical chairs. All players will receive a king cake donated by a local baker. Cake donations are being coordinated by event co-organizer Bronwen Wyatt, pastry chef at Elysian Bar and Bacchanal Wine.

There will be silent auctions for 13 additional king cakes and other prizes.

Drinks and king cake will be available with a suggested donation to Congreso. There also will be a craft activity for children, on-site screen printing for T-shirts (attendees must bring their own shirts) and an installation piece by local artist collective Milagros encouraging people to call local representatives to support immigrants and asylum seekers.

Event participants also include students from Turning Tables, the bar and spirits training program offered

by Liberty’s Kitchen, and DJ Ann Glaviano, founder of the Heatwave! dance party, who will provide the soundtrack for musical chairs.

Shahrazad’s owner, Jamal Ismail, now owns Baba Ganuj, a stall in the food court in Place St. Charles (201 St. Charles Ave.; www.placestcharles. com). A dispute with the landlord led to Shaharazad’s closure, Ismail says.

Baba Ganuj serves a similar menu to his former restaurant, including falafel, salads and sandwiches.

How would you describe your food?

It’s very sour — every dish has got some sort of sour molasses or lemon or dried limes. That flavor I think is new (here) and to be developed — and is fun and cool and fresh.

H: For Iranians, the rice is the main attraction. They take very delicate care in preparing rice.

Usually that’s with stew, or sometimes you can make a rice mixed with herbs or beans. There are variations, and different seasons will call for different ones. We made one recently with dill and lima beans and in the future may make one with green beans and tomatoes.

HALEY ROWE-KADOW: It’s hard to get recipes out of Nina’s grandmother — you have to follow her around with a pen and paper. We’re using Nina and Nicole’s tastes and their memories of the food, along with some recipes we’ve found in old and new Persian cookbooks to recreate the feeling. It’s not necessarily the exact recipes of grandma.

There’s the show-stopping tahdig, which is the rice dish cooked in a special Persian rice cooker with the crunchy bit on the bottom — that’s the most coveted part.

We’re trying to do a lot of hearty stews with ingredients people aren’t necessarily expecting to be the main ingredient. We are doing a celery stew that was the No. 1 hit at a party we had the other day.

Persian food has very distinct flavors that you don’t see as pronounced in other types of food.

H: Our vision is to do pop-ups at bars and breweries — and catering as well. We decided to start off with a party to showcase the food, to get on people’s radar and give them a palate for it and to practice doing these dishes.

We’ve made them for ourselves, and I’ve eaten them plenty with my grandmother, but It’s a whole other thing to make them in large batches.

Iranians like to say Iranian food should be served and eaten in the kitchen, meaning it sometimes doesn’t translate to restaurants. I know that’s not true because I’ve been to plenty of great Iranian restaurants, especially in Los Angeles. But you’ve got to put a lot of care into the food, and we wanted to make sure we could get that right. — REBECCA FRIEDMAN

NINA HORNE: I am half Iranian, and my grandmother always cooked for us. I love Iranian food and sharing it with people, and I noticed there was not a lot here in New Orleans. Me and my sister Nicole Horne had kicked around the idea of using my grandmother’s recipes and doing a pop-up just to spread the food to New Orleans.

Haley and I are dating, and she is a professional food person, and she got involved to help us out.

BY JAKE CLAPP MANY FANS OF COUNTRY MUSIC will tell you that what you get on the radio is the watered down stuff — songs full of sunshine and good times fueled by camo-printed cans of Busch beer. But the best work in the genre has hard sides. Hank Williams drank heavily; Johnny Cash was hooked on amphetamines; Waylon Jennings got busted by the DEA, and then wrote a song about it; hell, modern artists like Sturgill Simpson embrace psychedelics. A study found that drug use comes up more often in country music than any other genre. Those confessional songs, though, are rarely glorification. Rather, country musicians write about their troubles as a release.

That’s where Jesse Daniel fits in. The country singer-songwriter came up in California as a drummer in touring punk bands, floating in and out of jail and rehab. One day, while in a facility in Oakland, California, he caught a Hank Williams tune and promised himself he’d get his life together. In 2018, Daniel released his gritty, captivating debut album — on which he’s brutally reflective — and started 2019 with the Honky Tonk Male of The Year award at the Ameripolitan Awards. He’s now working on his sophomore release.

BY WILL COVIELLO THE SUCCESS OF THE BROADWAY PRODUCTION OF “CATS” has not been matched by its poorly reviewed recent film adaptation. Local fans of the musical may be able to get a reset this week, as Liz Callaway, famous for her run as Grizabella in the 1990s, sings in the Broadway at NOCCA series Jan. 11. Bryan Batt, who first appeared on Broadway in the early 1990s as Munkustrap in “Cats,” is slated to make a guest appearance.

Callaway has had a prominent career on Broadway and been cast in many Stephen Sondheim productions. She played a leading role in “Miss Saigon” and performed in “Baby,” “Evita,” “Merrily We Roll Along” and more.
