“That reminds me of when I first met Louis Armstrong,” Gabriel says.

“I was about 13 or 14 years old and I met him here in New Orleans at The Coliseum — there used to be a boxing ring on Conti. The building is still there, but it used to be a boxing arena. So my dad took me up there to meet Louis, and Louis is rubbing my head, you know, ‘I’m gonna take this boy on the road, man.’ I believed him — he was just joking at my dad. And this was one of the [songs] Louis used to do, ‘I’m Confessin’,” and I guess that stayed with me as a youngster.”

“I’m Confessin’” appears on Gabriel’s new album, “89,” alongside other standards, like “Stardust” and “Three Little Words,” and two originals, “The Darker It Gets” and “Yellow Moon.” Sub Pop will release the album digitally and on streaming platforms on Friday, Feb. 25, with vinyl records and CDs available July 1.

Most musicians, of course, connect stories and memories to the songs they play. But at 89 years old, the connections built by Gabriel — a saxophonist, clarinetist and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band’s senior member — reach back into New Orleans music history. He might comment on filling in for his father with the Eureka Brass Band when he was 11 years old. Or learning from musicians like Kid Sheik, Dominique “T-Boy” Remy and James “Kid” Clayton.

“You hear it when Charlie plays, you’re hearing the history of Black American music,” says Jaffe, Preservation Hall’s creative director. Gabriel joined Preservation Hall in 2009, and the two have become close.

Gabriel was born in 1932 and grew up in a house on Conti Street. He would become the fourth generation of New Orleans musicians in his family — a lineage that goes back to the 1850s and his great-grandfather, bass player Narcesse Gabriel.

During World War II, Charlie Gabriel would sit in for his father, the clarinetist and drummer Martin Manuel Gabriel.

When he was a teenager, Gabriel moved to Detroit and his experience landed him a gig at 16 with Lionel Hampton’s band. Gabriel

later performed with Aretha Franklin’s Orchestra in the early ’70s, and over the years he played with J.C. Heard, Joe Simon, Tony Bennett and others, along with leading his own bebop quintet and traditional jazz bands. Gabriel gigged in New Orleans over the decades, and he decided to come back after Hurricane Katrina, he told WGNO. New Orleans “itself is music,” Gabriel recently told Gambit, sitting at a small table in the screened-in back porch of Jaffe’s studio. “New Orleans is a very special place to be exposed to. I tell people that if you really want to know this music, you have to go to New Orleans, put your foot on the surface, and the music is all around you.”

Laying on a checkered tablecloth is a chess set. Gabriel and Jaffe regularly play — and it was a welcome pastime during the slow months of the pandemic in 2020. Gabriel lost his brother to COVID-19 last winter.

Gabriel and Jaffe would talk during those chess games, and they’d also play music together.

One afternoon guitarist Joshua Starkman visited the studio, and the three decided to do some recording.

Gabriel plays tenor sax and clarinet throughout “89” and sings on three songs. He’s joined by Jaffe on bass and keyboard, Starkman on guitar, drummer Walter Harris and percussionist Djallo Djakate.

Charlie Gabriel “We didn’t start out with the idea of making an album,” Gabriel says. “But there’s so much material that we’ve been working on that I decided it would be good to release some new material.”

They recorded the songs on “89” throughout 2020 and 2021.

“We would be sitting here during Covid, out here playing chess and I would pull up something on Spotify or YouTube and play some Lester Young or some Louis Armstrong … and all of a sudden it became a history lesson for me,” Jaffe says.

Gabriel has many more originals, and trumpeter and Preservation Hall Jazz Band member Branden Lewis has been working with Gabriel over the last year to record another album. The record, which will feature Dee Dee Bridgewater, Herlin Riley and others is planned for release later this year.

“It’s one of those things. Music is your life, being a musician because all we do is talk about music,” Gabriel says. “I used to have a phrase: Musical conversation cancels out complications. That’s my little thing to try and learn something from one another. In another word, we talk about it, so we don’t run into no problems.”

The theme is Hot and Sweet, and for royalty, the krewe is honoring fallen krewe members Chelsea Sullivan and Joe Perez. The procession will be led by Tap Dat and will include a brass band. The krewe gathers in front of the Maple Leaf Bar on Oak Street at 7:30 p.m. for the procession.

upheld the mask and vaccine mandate in place for the duration of Carnival 2022 in New Orleans. Mayor Cantrell issued reasonable rules amid the latest COVID-19 surge, including an indoor mask and proof-of-vaccination requirement for indoor gatherings. Members of parading krewes also must show proof of vaccination or recent negative tests. More than 100 plaintiffs filed suit hoping to strike the restrictions down, but the high court declined to hear the emergency appeal.

Aquarium’s beloved waddling bird, celebrated his second birthday on Feb. 17 with a fishthemed “cake.” He was born just before the pandemic shutdowns of 2020, and photos of the tiny, fluffy, gray chick were a bright spot in those dark days. The African penguin was named after Pelicans power forward Zion Williamson and is part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan to help endangered species.

take its brightly colored wrestling masks and performing dance moves to the streets during Carnival, despite losing $5,000 worth of sound equipment to thieves. In addition to fundraising for local charities, the lively krewe brings Latin music and culture to the parade route each year. After news of the theft aired on FOX-8, other krewes and the public raised enough money through GoFundMe to replace what was taken.

City Council takes step toward changing outdoor live music rules THE NEW ORLEANS CITY COUNCIL IS RENEWING ITS EFFORT to revamp the

city’s outdoor live entertainment policies, which even before the pandemic have been a headache for local business owners wanting to host live music regularly.

The council on Feb. 17 approved a motion that kickstarts the process of changing those complicated policies. The motion asks the City Planning Commission (CPC) to report back with recommendations for the first phase of changes, which the council will then vote on.

The motion requests guidance from the CPC surrounding specific areas, including increasing the number of temporary outdoor entertainment events for which a venue can apply, expanding places in the city that allow outdoor amphitheaters and revising the definition of “live entertainment” in the first place.

Last January, the CPC presented findings of its extensive Outdoor Live Entertainment Study and recommendations for a phased approach to adjusting permitting policies.

One of the more controversial recommendations for Phase One was to increase the number of temporary outdoor entertainment events to two or three times a week for one year — far more than they’re allowed normally, but fewer than they’ve been allowed during

the pandemic. It also suggested limiting show hours until 9 p.m.

Friday and Saturday and 8 p.m. the rest of the week.

That doesn’t necessarily mean that’s what the council will end up passing. The city will conduct public hearings on the issue before the final vote.

Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s COVID-19 emergency order temporarily expanded the number of temporary live outdoor music permits businesses could apply for as a way of encouraging outdoor shows during the pandemic. But the uncertainty about what rules may look like in the future has clouded over the owners of popular pandemic-era outdoor venues.

Last fall, Tom Thayer shut down d.b.a at Palace Market, an outdoor venue across the street from his club, citing in part expensive permitting and fee costs. Meanwhile, Bryan Knighten began converting The Broadside into an outdoor amphitheater in hopes of accessing a more permanent permit from the city.

“Music and performance is the soul of New Orleans’ culture, and we need to do whatever it takes to keep the people that make our culture working and creating,” said Council President Helena Moreno.

A recent finance report obtained by The Advocate shows Landry issued payment to the company Liquid IV, phrasing the expense as a “prevention of dehydration.”

The gator-hunting booze fest was also a fundraiser for Landry’s PAC attended by a bounty of D-list conservative celebs, like U.S. Rep. Clay Higgins. Landry hosted it in the wake of Hurricane Ida while thousands were still without electricity.

He partially promoted it as an additional fundraiser for hurricane relief efforts, but investigations by Gambit revealed that some of the proceeds benefited far-right, anti-LGBTQ organizations.

GOP lawmaker slams colleagues after redistricting vote

REP. BARRY IVEY, A WHITE REPUBLICAN FROM CENTRAL found his breaking point

Feb. 16 after his colleagues killed his bill creating another majority-Black district in the Supreme Court. In a dramatic speech on the chamber floor, Ivey let his fellow Republicans have it, calling their decision “B.S.” and them “the laziest group of people I’ve ever worked with.”

Ivey commonly quips about lawmakers rarely passing his bills, but this was different. With the bill failing, as of press time legislators are on track to end the redistricting session only passing maps maintaining the status quo of underrepresenting Black voters.

“This is the last bill I’m gonna offer this year,” Ivey said. “I won’t be authoring any more House bills. I may have a few resolutions, but I will not be authoring any more legislation for the next regular session and maybe the rest of the next year either. And that might be my legislative career.”

“The apathy throughout this state is evident in each of you when you fail to act when you can, when you

should,” he added. “I bit my tongue for the last nine years, and I’m not going to do it anymore.”

Ivey ranted against lawmakers passing bills that put corporate and political interests over the public interest and blamed them for people disengaging in the political process.

“We’ve got the political machines and operating full throttle all the time,” he said. “And the people there are so disenfranchised, they don’t even pay attention.”

“We play the games that it’s about the people, but it’s not … You look at every bill that’s passed in this last year, what you’ll find is if it wasn’t backed by deep-pocket, corporate special interests, it didn’t have much of a shot.”

Ivey wasn’t expecting the House to table his bill, he said, and by doing so, they killed it 52-43 without having to go on the record as voting for or against it. However, he also didn’t expect legislators to pass the bill — which would need a two-thirds vote in both chambers — before the session ended either, referencing reports that leaders planned to end the session early.

Rep. Lance Harris, a white Alexandria Republican, said Ivey

“came up here and threw the whole body under the bus,” despite the fact that some of them voted against tabling the bill. “Life does not give you what you want. It gives you what you deserve,” he said.

Rep. Kenny Cox, a Black Natchitoches Democrat, interjected, “I take offense to that because you say it’s what I deserve.” Cox, who is term-limited, represents a majority-Black House district that will dissolve into the four surrounding majority-white Republican districts under the proposal likely to pass. He has called the move “voter suppression at its greatest.”

Rep. C. Denise Marcelle, a Black Baton Rouge Democrat, thanked Ivey for his comments. “I don’t believe that every member in here is wrong about every single vote, but I do believe that this process is tainted,” she said.

Earlier, Republicans killed her attempts to create a congressional map with more majority-Black districts.

Ivey said he wanted the Legislature to redraw the districts themselves rather than have the courts draw new lines amid legal battles, which has happened before. His plan

would have two of seven majority-Black districts.

“There is pending litigation in federal courts right now on this very subject, and we have an opportunity to demonstrate that we’ve grown, we’ve matured,” Ivey said. “Because we all say it’s not about race, we’ve grown, we’ve matured, we’ve evolved, we’re enlightened. And what do we do? We repeat ourselves because we don’t learn from history.”

“It’s a bunch of B.S.,” he added. “It’s OK, though. Look, we’ll just continue to get by here in Louisiana, because we’re too stupid to work together.”

Unlike with the redrawing of the other districts, lawmakers can redraw the Supreme Court maps during the regular legislative session, and the law doesn’t require lawmakers to redraw them every 10 years. The maps have stayed the same since 1997. Sen. Sharon Hewitt, a Slidell Republican, has a plan to redraw the districts to make them closer in population, but her map again has only one majority-Black district.

“It’s about keeping the status quo that’s the most failed status quo in the nation,” Ivey said.

Council confirmation of mayoral appointees worth considering

NEW ORLEANS COUNCIL MEMBER JP MORRELL HAS RAISED AN INTERESTING QUESTION about the balance of

power at City Hall: Should the council have the authority to confirm or reject future mayoral appointees to key positions? Morrell frames his question in an ordinance that would put on the Nov. 8 ballot a proposed amendment to the City Charter granting the council that authority effective Jan. 1, 2023.

Charter amendments require voter approval, which is why Morrell’s proposed ordinance merely calls for a referendum on the question of giving the council confirmation authority. Morrell says if voters approve the proposed amendment, it will only affect new appointments made after the effective date.

The ordinance isup for perfunctory committee referral at the council’s meeting on Thursday and will not get a public hearing until after Mardi Gras — but Mayor LaToya Cantrell has already lambasted the idea. In a letter to council members, Cantrell warned that prolonged confirmation hearings could undermine new administrations and potentially hamper the city’s ability to respond to crises. “The proposed mandate could slow people’s business down by months at the beginning of the new terms,” Cantrell wrote.

We disagree.

While we reserve the right to assess the final language of the proposed amendment, we think Morrell’s idea deserves serious consideration. For the mayor to dismiss the concept of council members’ advice and consent on key appointments out of hand, before it has had even a minute of public discussion, shows either a profound misunderstanding of America’s system of checks and balances or an imperious, even Trumpian, disregard for that notion. Or both.

Morrell says the council has months to fine tune the proposed amendment’s language to address the mayor’s or anyone else’s concerns. We can think of several potential improvements.

For example, the proposed amendment could include a reasonable deadline for council consideration

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell opposes a proposal by Council Member JP Morrell, which would have the public vote on an amendment to give the council power to approve or reject future mayoral appointees. of a mayoral nominee — say, 60 days — after which the nominee would be deemed acceptable. It could also include language allowing nominees to serve as interim appointees, which would further reduce the potential for impeding new or returning administrations.

The concept of council members vetting mayoral appointees to major positions such as department or agency heads, members of certain commissions and boards, or key decision makers is not unusual. In fact, the Jefferson Parish Council has had such authority for years without political squabbling or administrative impediment. Morrell says other major cities such as Seattle, Washington, D.C., Jacksonville and Baltimore likewise give their legislative branches authority to confirm or reject key mayoral appointees.

We understand Cantrell’s sensitivity to any idea that might encroach on her authority, but Heronner cannot deny that her appointment of former shortterm rental exec Peter Bowen to oversee enforcement of the city’s STR regulations is exactly the kind of debacle that Morrell’s proposal could prevent in the future.

Cantrell fired Bowen in January, but only after media reports he verbally abused the police who’d arrested him on a drunk-driving charge. It would have been better for everyone — including Cantrell — if the council could have rejected Bowen up front.

its special redistricting session as expected.

Lawmakers maintained the GOP’s firm hold on every state political body whose members are elected from districts — and kept Black-majority districts to their current, minimal numbers.

If I were writing my usual post-session “Winnas & Loozas” column, I would struggle to write more than three short sentences: Republicans won.

Black people lost. No surprise.

Everything went according to form, as planned and executed by the GOP leadership.

To be fair, both political parties shared the same goal: draw districts at every level that would help them gain seats in future elections, starting this fall with the congressional contests and culminating in the 2023 statewide elections.

Individual lawmakers had the narrowest of interests: self-preservation and self-advancement. That led to some interesting intramural spats and, no doubt, some behindthe-scenes wheeling and dealing that ultimately convinced a Dem or two to jump ship on some key votes.

I predicted before the session began that it would end with no increase in Black-majority districts for the state House, the state Senate, the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE), the state Public Service Commission (PSC), the state’s congressional delegation or the state Supreme Court. I rarely make predictions, but this outcome was the surest thing since Secretariat in the 1973 Belmont — and about as lopsided for the winner.

In all but BESE, the House and Senate, the number of Blackmajority seats for each elected body remains unchanged: one.

Black people will continue to have two of BESE’s eight elected seats.

Roughly 40% of Louisiana residents identified as minority in the 2020 Census, which ostensibly serves as the basis for drawing new district boundaries — and 33% percent are Black. If politics were

Representatives on the first day of the redistricting session earlier this month. as cut-and-dried as math, Black and minority voters henceforth would have three BESE seats, two PSC seats, two congressional seats and two or three state Supreme Court seats.

Elections typically boil down to numbers, but redistricting is all about power — and political advantage. Numbers matter only when it’s time to vote on new district boundaries, and Republicans have a decided advantage there: 27 of 39 votes in the Senate; 68 of 105 votes in the House. Equally if not more important, Black lawmakers currently hold only 10 Senate seats and 26 House seats.

Those numbers, too, won’t change — unless Gov. John Bel Edwards intervenes with a veto or two and successfully defends an all-but-certain override session.

Edwards is no fool, and he is an ally of Black voters. Given the federal courts’ obliteration of the Voting Rights Act, he may be Black voters’ only hope of changing the course of things. JBE fought off GOP efforts to override his vetoes last summer, but things are different this time. This time lawmakers have more than pet projects on the line; their own political futures are at stake.

Edwards probably won’t run for office again, so he doesn’t have much to lose. Then again, he hates to lose. What happens next, if anything, isn’t so easy to predict.

Hey Blake, My dad remembers seeing the Endymion parade roll through Gentilly in its early years. When did it switch to its current route starting near City Park?

Dear Reader,

WHILE THE KREWE OF ENDYMION HAS GROWN into one of the largest

and most anticipated parades in Carnival, in its early years it was a small krewe that began in Gentilly.

For its first parade on Feb. 4, 1967, Endymion began at DeSaix and Gentilly Boulevard, traveling down Gentilly to North Broad.

It turned onto Canal, then onto North Rampart, then rolled into the French Quarter, going down Orleans to Royal Street. After traveling on Royal toward Canal, the parade crossed Canal to St. Charles Avenue, passing Gallier Hall before ending near Poydras Street and the Mississippi River. A ball and supper dance were held after the parade at the Jung Hotel.

In 1973, after parades were banned from the French Quarter, Endymion changed its route.

Instead of going through the Quarter, it traveled up and down Canal Street then Rampart to end at the Municipal Auditorium.

Beginning in 1974, Endymion followed Bacchus’ lead by staging its post-parade party at the Rivergate convention center.

Historians call that a turning point for the krewe as it evolved from a smaller parade to a super krewe with larger floats, celebrity guests and its Extravaganza. The event moved from the Rivergate to the Superdome in 1981.

In 1982, Endymion introduced its current route, starting at Marconi and City Park Avenue. Like this year, there have been years with route changes, including for Superdome renovations. In 2003 and 2006, the parade rolled on the St. Charles route (in 2003 because of streetcar construction and in 2006 because of rain).

BL AKEVIE W ON MONDAY, FEB. 28, OR LUNDI GRAS, when Rex and King Zulu appear before the crowds at Spanish Plaza, they will mark the 35th anniversary of that Riverfront celebration.

Beginning in 1874, Rex, the King of Carnival, arrived by boat on the day before Mardi Gras. That tradition ended in 1917, however. It was revived briefly in 1971 for Rex’s centennial but discontinued.

In 1986, Errol Laborde, who was then editor of Gambit and is now executive editor of New Orleans Magazine, served as a member of the city’s Mardi Gras Coordinating Committee. He proposed the idea of reviving Rex’s riverfront arrival.

He borrowed the name Lundi Gras from a musical called “Staggerlee,” which is set in a Black Creole bar in New Orleans on the night before Mardi Gras. In the play, characters used the term “Lundi Gras,” which was not otherwise widely known.

Riverwalk signed on to the idea, as did the Rex Organization and the Krewe of Proteus, which agreed to alter its parade route to roll near the festivities.

Rex secured a U.S. Coast Guard cutter for his arrival and was accompanied by a jazz band when he met Mayor Sidney Barthelemy and other dignitaries for the first Lundi Gras event on March 2, 1987. There was music from the Neville Brothers and fireworks.

In 1993, Zulu began staging a Lundi Gras Festival nearby at Woldenberg Park. In 1999, King Zulu and his entourage began the tradition of joining Rex at Spanish Plaza. This year’s Zulu Lundi Gras Festival will begin at 10 a.m. with the arrival of King and Queen Zulu at 5 p.m. At 6 p.m., Zulu will join Rex at the Riverwalk Lundi Gras festivities, which begin at noon at Spanish Plaza.

CARNIVAL REACHES ITS PINNACLE with a final week of parades.

There are many notable milestones on this week’s calendar. Rex has been celebrating its 150th anniversary, and the parade finally rolls. The Sesquicentennial procession features floats commemorating parades from throughout its history. Le Krewe d’Etat marks its 25th parade. And the Culinary Queens of New Orleans debut in Marrero, bringing a Tuesday night parade back to the schedule.

While Endymion, Rex and Zulu have routes very similar to previous years, most parades in New Orleans follow the abbreviated Uptown route, with minor differences in end points.

The Krewe of Thoth has been forced to forego its normal start on Uptown streets lined by hospitals and assisted living facilities. In Metairie, Argus follows its traditional route, but other krewes are going from Bonnabel Boulevard toward Clearview this year. Also in Jefferson, the Krewe of Isis holds its second parade in Kenner. See Gambit’s parade maps on page 24, and be aware that routes are subject to change.

There also is a host of walking krewe activity (see page 32). The Krewe of Red Beans and its offshoots the Dead Beans and Feijao + Green Beans parade on Lundi Gras. The North Side Skull and Bone Gang hits the streets early on Mardi Gras morning.

UPTOWN THEME: announced day of parade FLOATS: 27 QUEEN: announced day of parade SARGON: secret THROWS: lighted jesters, krewe emblem footballs, lighted streetcars, cups and doubloons The Knights of Babylon don’t announce the parade theme until the day of the parade, but the 2022 theme promises some tall tales, with floats depicting “Jack and the Beanstalk,” “The Wizard of Oz” and “Shrek.” The procession includes marching troupes such as the Amelia EarHawts and the Muff-aLottas. There are plenty of throws featuring the krewe’s jester icon, derived from its original name, the Jesters Club.

The all-women satirical krewe doesn’t announce its theme until the day of the parade, but fans know to expect an array of special marching groups and signature floats such as the recently introduced Goddessey, the giant yellow ducks and the Bathtub. There is a wide array of themed throws, and the krewe’s 2022 cup features art by Taylor Morris, a student in Edna Karr High School’s art program InspireNOLA.

Friday, Feb. 25 HERMES 5:30 p.m.

UPTOWN THEME: The Mystical Isle of Avalon FLOATS: 33 QUEEN: announced at krewe ball KING: secret THROWS: capes, gloves, footballs, theme medallion beads, cups and doubloons The krewe introduces a new signature float this year, Hermes the Psychopomp, which celebrates one of the messenger god’s other roles — protecting travelers.

AMONG THE MOST SOUGHT-AFTER REMINDERS of the “Golden Age of Car-

nival” are parade bulletins — beautiful presentations of each year’s themes and float designs. “Parade papers” or bulletins, with images of each float and notes describing the parade theme and float titles, helped the public anticipate and enjoy each parade, and preserved memories of those parades long after their brief time on the parade route and their return to the den.

Much of what we know of early Rex parades, themes, and float designs we learn from parade bulletins.

Early versions of “parade papers” consisted of black and white engravings of float designs printed in newspapers along with descriptions of each parade, but these quickly evolved into more elaborate presentations. According to Carnival historian Henri Schindler, larger “broadside” sheets soon appeared with float sketches on one side and advertisements and float descriptions on the reverse. By 1886, these large-scale masterpieces of chromolithography were popular keepsakes of Carnival parades.

Newspapers competed for contracts to print each organization’s parade bulletin. According to Schindler, “These ten-cent bulletins have assumed an importance that could not have been imagined when they were produced. Because so few collections of original float and costume designs have survived, these lithographs became the visual record of the great processions, pic-

turing every float from 1877 until the bulletins were discontinued in 1941.”

For all of those reasons, the Rex organization brought back the parade bulletin beginning with its 2003 Louisiana Purchase Bicentennial parade. The project combined contemporary artwork — float sketches and drawings prepared under the direction of Schindler, Rex’s artistic director — with elements of bulletins printed more than a century ago. The final product relied on the latest computer technology to bring the old and the new together.

That work was done by Matthew Hales, a computer artist and the School of Design’s “Royal Lithographer.” For almost two decades Rex parade bulletins have been a popular souvenir of modern Rex parades.

They have also played an important role in the Rex in the Classroom program, allowing students to explore the theme of each Rex parade during the weeks before Mardi Gras.

This year’s bulletin celebrates the 2022 Rex parade, School of Design Sesquicentennial, with float designs honoring many beautiful parades presented over the last century and a half. A special mule-drawn riderless float commemorates Rex’s founding in 1872.

Today’s parade bulletins do not match the heroic size of the old broadside versions, but they accomplish the same goal, preserving in a unique art form images of beautiful parades that are on public display for just one day.

each year on Fat Tuesday reminds people about their mortality. Members of the Black male group dress as skeletons, play percussion instruments, chant and sing. They circle Treme, knocking on doors just as the sun is rising. Their mission is literal.

“We dress as the meaning of Carnival,” says Big Chief Bruce “Sunpie” Barnes. “It’s about the shedding of the flesh.”

The group’s appearance can be eerie — it’s expected and inevitable, but there’s always an element of surprise.

“Not everyone feels the same way... it’s about how people feel inside about their own mortality. It’s like a mirror,” Barnes says.

The gang doesn’t follow an exact route. After all, part of the mission is to be as spontaneous as life and

death. In contrast, or perhaps harmony, with other excessive elements of Carnival and its aftermath, they serve as the stripped-down reminders of how we all end up: piles of bones or ashes. In the meantime, the group urges, examine your life and try to enjoy it.

This year, the gang will gather at Little People’s Bar in Treme and depart shortly before 5:30 a.m. In previous years, members assembled at the Backstreet Cultural Museum near Armstrong Park. The museum’s founder Sylvester “Hawk” Francis died amid the coronavirus pandemic.

His memory, along with the passing of another culture bearer and member Ronald Lewis, is further inspiring the group on their somber but celebratory march this year.

“Having people remember that life is precious and to be able to survive the hard times that people everywhere have gone through is nothing to take lightly,” Barnes says. “But we are also happy and delighted to have the opportunity to mask again. This is a shout out to planet Earth as far as I’m concerned.”

ON LUNDI GRAS IN 2020, the Krewe of Red Beans and its spinoff Krewe of Dead Beans and then-new Feijao donned homemade costumes and marched in second-line style. Just a few months later, the Krewe of Red Beans pivoted to address the challenges of the COVID-19 outbreak, quickly growing into a grassroots pandemic-relief juggernaut.

The krewe and its founder Devin De Wulf first started Feed the Front Line, an effort supporting local restaurants and feeding hospital workers. In May 2020, the initiative transitioned into Feed the Second Line, which has become a standalone nonprofit buying groceries for elders and employing younger musicians and culture bearers. Then, there were the 2021 initiatives: Hire a Mardi Gras Artist, Fest Fest and Bean Coin. And after Hurricane Ida, Feed the Second Line and glass recycling organization Glass Half Full launched the solar-power focused program Stay Lit, which is closer to being able to install its first project, De Wulf says.

Amid all that, the Krewe of Red Beans purchased a building in the Bywater and is currently remodeling it to serve as both a krewe den and community cultural space called Beanlandia. While work is underway on the space, it will be some time before it opens, De Wulf says.

But at its core, Red Beans is still a Carnival krewe, using beans to decorate homemade costumes for its second-line style walking parades. The three bean krewes return to the streets at 2 p.m. on Lundi Gras with three separate parades.

“We’re gonna do exactly what we did in 2020, and we’re really excited to get back out on the streets and to celebrate that day,” De Wulf says. “We certainly invite everybody who would like to march alongside us to do so.”

The original Red Beans parade will start at St. Ferdinand and Royal streets in the Marigny neighborhood and march toward Treme with The Treme Brass Band I and II. The krewe’s Day of the Dead-inspired spinoff parade, Dead Beans, begins at the Pitot House on Moss Street along Bayou St. John and marches through Mid-City toward Treme, eventually meeting the Red Beans parade. Bon Bon Vivant and Panorama will march with Dead Beans.

The third parade, Feijao & Green Beans, debuted in 2020 and is inspired by Brazil and its connections to New Orleans. Amigos do Samba and Da Truth Brass Band will take part. The parade starts at Bud Rips Bar at Piety and Burgundy streets and parades through the Bywater.

MARDI GRAS 2022 the term “Carnival” is a Latin word meaning “farewell to meat,” referring to the last indulgences before Lent.

“That’s from having Ash Wednesday as the start of Lent, when you give up meat and give up other things, so Carnival season is sort of the feast before the famine,” says Katie Carmichael of Virginia Tech, Dajko’s research partner.

Then, you also have the Mardi Gras Indians tradition, which Black people started with the name itself a nod to the indigenous people who helped enslaved people escape slavery. Though we don’t know exactly when the masking Indian tradition started in the city, it goes back to at least the late 19th century. Dajko says there are similar masking traditions in Trinidad and Tobago as well.

“By then, the African languages are very much sort of fading away, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t memories of them or fragments of them in various different ways,” Dajko says.

Mardi Gras Indian call and response chants have also changed throughout the years and there are many differing accounts of their origins. Take “Jockamo-fi-na-nay,” for instance. Author Emanuel Drechsel traces the phrase — which we now sing while belting the chorus of “Iko Iko” — to what linguists call Mobilian Jargon, a common language between indigenous tribes and others living along the Gulf of Mexico stemming from their respective native languages.

TRACING THE ROOTS OF NEW ORLEANS CARNIVAL TERMS is like playing a game of telephone,

Tulane University researcher Nathalie Dajko says. If every player spoke a different language, that is.

Many of these words have no official spellings and are offshoots of multiple different languages, given the city’s long history as a port city. Dajko estimates that up to 50 African languages, German, English, English-based Creole and a French-based Creole all influenced language in the city today.

Then add that to the fact that multiple generations of New Orleanians have passed these words down to their children, often who no longer speak the language(s) of origin, and you’ll see where the difficulty lies.

New Orleans’ status as a melting pot is evident in every aspect of our culture, and Carnival is obviously no exception, with French words and phrases like “mardi,” “lundi” and “boeuf gras,” and krewe names ranging from classical Greek mythology (Bacchus, Proteus and Hermes) to African mythology (Zulu, Oshun, Nefertiti and Cleopatra). One theory is that the phrase stemmed from the Chickasaw language, an indigenous language spoken by the Muskogean family.

In the language, “chokma” means “it’s good” and “finha” means “very.” There’s also the responses to “Hey Pocky A-Way,” which Dajko says have shifted from “What do you say?

Oo-tawn-day,” to now “Hell out the way” and other variations.

Dajko and Carmichael are conducting a study on language, culture and traditions in New Orleans as part of a joint research project with Tulane University and Virginia Tech, and they’re looking for lifelong New Orleanians to interview. Family Dinners Barrilleaux’s serves Italian fare in Marigny BARRILLEAUX’S, THE ITALIAN RESTAURANT THAT OPENED IN MARIGNY LAST

fall, is named after a French word that means “to whom family is most important.”

For the restaurant’s partners, fifth-generation New Orleanian Brittani Adams-Perret, her mother Michele Caswell Adams and her aunt Blakley Kymen, that sentiment can’t be overstated. Although many familial ties evolve over special meals shared around a table, the three women never had those types of family dinners.

Adams, whose primary business is Unique Weddings and Events in New Orleans, was adopted at birth. In 2016, she found out that her parents married five years after she was given up for adoption and that she had two sisters, Kymen and Kristen Lynne. When they all connected, there was an instant bond. Kymen, Adams and Perret all also had worked in hospitality for years. The women quickly made up for lost time, and Kymen is now the consulting chef for Barrilleaux’s.

Kymen was the chef at Marcello’s Restaurant & Wine Bar, a Warehouse District Italian restaurant with a menu centered on family recipes with roots in Palermo. When the pandemic forced the closure of that spot on St. Charles Avenue, she moved to the Northshore, where she was raised, to open Marcello’s in Covington with her husband, chef Nicholas Fadely.

Fans of Kymen’s elegant cooking will recognize many of the dishes on Barrilleaux’s menu. Under small plates, polpetta are mini pork meatballs swabbed with a spicy bourbon demi-glace and topped with toasted almonds and nibs of feta cheese.

Crabmeat Maison shows off the chef’s classic French training, pairing a rich crabmeat cream filling with medallions of flash-fried eggplant.

A $24 antipasto board delivers a copious array of imported meats, cheeses and accompaniments such as caper berries, walnuts and fruit, and it’s easily shareable for four.

juicy inside, served with tangy garlic aioli.

Starters also include salads and a chicken and andouille gumbo.

For main dishes, Monie’s meatballs are ample in size and served with al dente spaghetti. The dish is based on a family recipe that harks to shared Sicilian roots in the little town of Bisacquino.

Pork cheeks and root vegetables are braised in a red wine demi-glace and served over Parmesan polenta. Barrilleaux’s version of shrimp and grits is one of the best in the city, glossy with butter, a generous helping of large and tender local shrimp and a sauce with an Abita beer base. For dessert, cannoli and tiramisu nod towards Italy, along with popular sweets like chocolate cream pie and gooey turtle pie.

The restaurant currently hosts a Sunday drag brunch, a festive — and raucous — party built around local performers and dishes like ova impratorio, a skillet filled with Italian sausage, egg and cheese. There also are chicken and waffles and lunch items like a meatball po-boy and chicken Parmesan sandwich.

Barrilleaux’s is in a building that Hurricane Katrina hit hard. A threeyear restoration brought it back to life with grace and style, uncovering exposed brick walls. Shimmering chandeliers were hung in the spacious dining room and a separate bar area was carved out.

In 2019, Adams and Perret leased the space to serve as a catering kitchen. Then the pandemic hit.

With event business at a standstill for so long, the duo decided to use the space as a restaurant and looped Kymen into the mix.

Dupont Circles Back

CAVAN WAS ONE OF A SLEW OF RESTAURANTS TO CLOSE FOR GOOD last

fall after Hurricane Ida. Now, the historic building it once called home has a new owner, a chef with New Orleans roots now developing a new restaurant in his hometown.

Chris Dupont recently bought the property at 3607 Magazine St. He is a chef who built his career over the last 30 years in Birmingham, Alabama. His restaurant Cafe Dupont was a pioneer in the modern farm-to-table style for Birmingham.

Now he’s sold Cafe Dupont, along with his Birmingham home, and he and his family are moving to New Orleans.

“I wanted to have my last restaurant in the place where I came from,” Dupont says.

He hopes to open his new restaurant by late summer, pending renovations to the former Cavan. Much PHOTO BY CHERYL GERBER

Thaddeus Drummer is a former concierge and restaurant manager who now handles the front of the house.

For Perret, 34, running a restaurant and catering business makes perfect sense.

“I literally grew up in the business, always around my mom’s work managing a hotel restaurant in the French Quarter,” Perret says. “When I graduated high school, I figured my mom would give me a job. She told me to find a job on my own first.”

Perret cycled through every possible hospitality job, earned a degree in hospitality at the University of New Orleans and joined the family business.

“We’re proud to be a family owned and operated business,” she says. “It means so much to us.”

about the new place has yet to be developed, and its name hasn’t been finalized.

But Dupont says he’ll start with the same cornerstone approach he’s used through his career — connecting with local food producers to build menus reflecting place and season.

“The ingredients write the menu.

I have to spend time becoming familiar with the folks who have their hands in the ground,” he says.

“I try not to pinpoint a style. I focus on technique.”

The chef opened the first iteration of Cafe Dupont in 1994 in Springville, Alabama, outside of Birmingham. This small-town location put him in close contact with many local farmers.

In 2003, he moved the restaurant to downtown Birmingham, and it’s credited with helping stir a revival of PAGE 40

the city’s business district, which at the time emptied out after hours.

Dupont grew up in Gretna and by high school was working in local restaurants. That included big names of the era, most of which have long since closed, like Christian’s in Mid-City (now home to Vessel), the Bistro at the Maison de Ville when Susan Spicer was its chef, and Tour d’Eiffel, the once-landmark restaurant on St. Charles Avenue.

“Probably the biggest influence on me was working at really good kitchens, right from the beginning,” he says. “Everything I needed to know came to me from what I’d seen.”

Cavan was an upscale casual bistro opened in 2016 by local group LeBlanc + Smith. The property has bars and dining rooms on two floors and a front porch and yard facing Magazine Street. It closed in September.

The architect for Dupont’s renovation is Brooks Graham, who has worked on many prominent New Orleans restaurants.

Though well known in Birmingham, Dupont says he knows he’ll have to start anew in New Orleans. But he’s also excited to rejoin the culinary scene that first inspired him all those years ago.

Harrison made pralines throughout her life. After graduating from Southern University at New Orleans she went to work at the LSU Medical Library, where she sold pralines to students on the side.

Her big break came in 1978 when she heard that Jazz Fest was seeking a new praline vendor. In her first festival weekend, she doubled her monthly income from the library, she said in a 2007 interview. The success inspired her to leave her job and develop her business full time.

By 1983, she opened her first shop in Jax Brewery. Later, she moved to the French Market and in the 1990s she opened a second,

Loretta Harrison exuded a warmth that could fill the room.

Known to many as the “praline queen,” Harrison was a businesswoman who made friends and admirers around the world through her shop Loretta’s Authentic Pralines and her long track record as a food vendor at the city’s biggest festivals, starting with the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.

Harrison died Feb. 16 at Ochsner Medical Center at age 66 from cancer, confirmed Cynthia Tate, a spokeswoman for Harrison’s family.

“She was a woman with incredible grace and moral fortitude, and was a guiding light who lit up our lives with infinite love,” Harrison’s family said in a statement. “We could always turn to her for wisdom and solace, and her absence is wholly felt in our hearts.”

Tate says her family plans to continue operating Loretta’s Authentic Pralines.

Harrison grew up in St. Bernard Parish, one of 12 children. Her

much larger shop and production kitchen in Faubourg Marigny.

Though her home was flooded after Hurricane Katrina, Harrison was determined to reopen her business quickly. She added lunch plates and dishes like gumbo to her menu, determining that her neighbors need a place for a meal more than sweets.

Harrison had three sons, Roddrick Harrison, Kendrick Harrison and Robert Hill. An extended network of relatives have always taken part in the business.

The Marigny shop is filled with religious messages of uplift, and even the greeting she recorded for her voicemail played as a joyous blessing for callers.

“It is an awesome feeling to be blessed with something that God blessed you with and have people love it,” Harrison said in a 2018 interview.

RioMar, Domenica and Booty’s Street Food. Since leaving restaurants, he’s been a private chef, a culinary consultant and worked with culinary tours. Currently, he’s a member of the board of directors of Good Trouble Network, a local chef-run charity that once a month sells food boxes, which include several prepared dishes and cocktails, and donates the proceeds to local charities and nonprofit groups. Since its inception in June 2020, GTN has donated a total of more than $100,000 to groups including Lift Louisiana, Innocence Project New Orleans, the Music and Culture Coalition of New Orleans, Louisiana Fair Housing Action Center and more.

Ycaza and fellow GTN chef and board members Nick Martin and Cristina Quackenbush teamed up for a brunch at Mister Mao on Sunday, Feb. 20, to benefit New Orleans Prison Reform Coalition.

How did you get involved with the Good Trouble Network?

OCTAVIO YCAZA: I am the newest board member for Good Trouble. I have been working with them through last summer. These people are all friends, so I would see their social media accounts, and I was like, these people are doing some neat stuff. I started to volunteer to be one of the contributing chefs. It seemed like an excellent way to get cooking again.

Every month the box is different. There are different chefs and donating restaurants. You’ll see which bars are participating, and what the cocktails are. We don’t tell the chefs who are volunteering what to cook. We do our best to give them a theme. For February, the theme was For the Love of Mardi Gras. Whatever that means to you. When sales close, our chefs and restaurant partners have a few days to prepare orders. Our team brings them to one location, and we assemble boxes. Each

box feeds two people but super well. It is advertised through our Instagram account.

How has GTN grown?

Y: The group is at a cool and critical point. It’s achieving its goals and it’s still 100% volunteer workforce, and it’s also growing. When you have you and nine friends doing a small thing, getting people to show up is not that difficult if you’re engaging. But over time, as it requires more people, it starts to require partnerships. We’re working out how to maintain that when you buy a box, 100% of the money you pay goes to the charity of the month.

But now, we are trying to branch out into a new format. Currently you just go pick up the box you’ve ordered. They show up, get their box and leave. At the last board meeting, I suggested we build a community around that. At first there was only pickup. Then to expand, we added delivery. And while delivery is great for sales, it doesn’t do much for community gathering. I suggested that when we do pickups, we have a live event, so people who are purchasers can meet some of our volunteer team and the contributors. People can network. In March, we may be able to do the first live event to build our community beyond social media.

What did you plan for the brunch?

Y: It’s a really cool community. If you work in the service industry, especially in New Orleans, and you enjoy doing it, you’re going to make all sorts of friends. Sophina (Uong of Mister Mao) had her first paid gig in town working for me. I was doing this crazy Alice in Wonderland dinner at the Music Box during Jazz Fest one year.

Sophina was new in town and didn’t have a job. She knows Amy Sins. I know Amy Sins. I asked Amy to work the gig, and she said do you need an extra person? So, I met Sophina four years ago.

One person may take the lead on one thing, and somebody else will take the lead on something else, but we all back up the person taking the lead. Sophina has been a multiple time contributor to the box GTN offers. She understands our dynamic and how we like to work. She was down to invite the GTN as a team — The Wu Tang Clan — over, and everybody does a thing.

Someone asked if I would do an egg dish, and I was like, sure, I love eggs. The most successful egg dish I made in a restaurant is a dish I used to make at Booty’s. It’s an eggs Benedict, but it’s pupusas instead of English muffins, and the pupusas are stuffed with pork instead of ham on top. There’s pickled shredded cabbage, called repollo, which is like a little nest on top of the pupusa, and it holds the egg, because I don’t poach eggs in water. I poach eggs in their shell. It’s a really neat method. You take an egg and drop it in boiling water for like three minutes and it cooks the outside of the egg. You pull it out and put it in ice water.

Then you peel it and you have an egg-shaped egg that’s still raw in the center. Then you warm that up in warm water and you have a soft egg that’s in its original shape and it sets neatly on the nest, and there’s hollandaise to make it pretty.

ON ANNE ELISE HASTINGS AND HER REVOLVING CAST OF CHARACTERS’ self-titled

debut album, Hastings named a song for Townes Van Zandt, one of her favorite songwriters. On the group’s sophomore album, “Unmasking a Confidence Trickster,” she has one named for Jack Kerouac, the Beat writer famous for the novel “On the Road.” But it’s not because she’s a fan. In the song, she suggests somebody hit the road.

“It’s not about one person,” she says. “It’s an amalgam of all these pseudointellectual, artsy-fartsy dudes who are terrible and don’t treat people well and have all this unearned confidence. It’s very common that these guys love Jack Kerouac, they read ‘Dharma Bums’ once and say it changed their lives.

They are romanticizing this life of freedom but they take it as ‘I can do whatever I want.’”

In the song, Hastings is clear that the disrespect is not appreciated, and that’s part of a common thread in the album. Hasting’s vocals standout on the record, which straddles alt-country and gentle rock, with several tunes channeling old styles of country music. But the song lyrics may be shaping a new type of country-esque song.

“There is a meme on the internet about male country singers talking about their girlfriend leaving them, their truck and drinking beer,” Hastings says with a laugh. “And female country singers talk about killing their ex-boyfriends. Miranda Lambert has so many songs about killing people.”

Far from telling an ex she wants them back or wants to kill them, Hastings wrote many of the new songs about reckoning with unworthy partners and saying it’s time to move on.

“Writing songs is almost a therapeutic process,” she says.

The one song about a good relationship is about her great grandparents, who met while playing together in a big band in the 1930s. He was much older than she was, and they ended up sneaking off and getting married to avoid her parents’ objections. The band traveled around the song’s namesake Missouri.

“They eventually went back home, and things were fine,” Hastings says. “Grandma said her dad died

before mom, but she would come into the room where the piano was and say, ‘Sometimes when I play, I still feel like he’s with me.’ That’s so sweet.”

Hastings has less fond memories of some of the people who inspired a couple of the songs on the new album. But she takes it as life lessons, as in one relationship that went awry.

“It turned from a loving relationship that went south really, really fast,” she says. “At first I was cowering and didn’t know how to act.

Then I was like, this is ridiculous. No, stand up for yourself.”

There are songs that touch on other subjects. “Still Afraid” is about anxiety and apprehension and wanting someone to offer support.

“Protest Song,” with its metaphor of a sinking ship, is about politics and not letting broad social and environmental problems get worse.

Hastings’ Revolving Cast of Characters band is comprised of people she met herself or through friends while attending Loyola University. Hastings plays guitar on the album and the lineup includes guitarist Dustin Dietsche, drummer Isaac Worley and bassist Tristan Clark. The album also gets a few horn notes from George Thomas, who also plays lapsteel guitar on several tracks. Though he now lives in California, he’s re-joining the band for its release show this week on Friday, Feb. 25.

The album is being released digitally on Feb. 25, and is available on CD at shows. The release party is open to the public, but at a private address. People interested in attending the show can contact the band through Facebook or Instagram for details.

by Will Coviello SOME OF THE ODDEST SCENES OF THE CHINESE ECONOMY at work in

Jessica Kingdon’s Oscar-nominated documentary “Ascension” involve the assembly of sex dolls. The gratuitous proportions of the lifesize female dolls keep them from being too lifelike, but the workers assemble them and inspect their exteriors to remove imperfections.

Apparently, the dolls are made to order, and aureoles are painted on in specified colors and sizes, all of which is checked with smartphone photos and apps. It’s a bizarre mix of the personal and impersonal.

While some of the labor Kingdon observes is far more mundane, this is not a political film or even really about manufacturing. She weaves together a mesmerizing film that spans the gap between the lowest rung factory workers and the burgeoning wealthy class in China.

Some scenes capture the training given to butlers, who learn about French haute cuisine and table settings and the deferential behavior that will be expected of them by wealthy Chinese employers.

Kingdon has a fly-on-the-wall perspective, and no matter how closely the camera observes people, none of them seem to be aware of being watched. That’s true of workers snapping together plastic parts from a conveyor belt as well as intense combat exercises for men training to become bodyguards.

The documentary is not the first to focus on Chinese manufacturing and the global economy, like the 2019 documentary “American Factory” about an Ohio auto plant taken over by a Chinese company.

“Ascension” isn’t analytical, and it merely observes, though the conditions are stark. Employers advertise factory jobs that pay 20 yuan, or less than $3, an hour. Benefits may include meals, residence in a dormitory or being able to work while sitting. Some warn that dyed hair and tattoos are not acceptable.

The doc includes manufacture of all sorts of products, and most of the workers do mind-numbingly simple and repetitive tasks in workplaces full of computer technology and automation. One worker tells a newcomer about having to buy the boss lunch every so often to try to find a way to advance — or risk falling out

of favor by not doing so.

Kingdon breaks less familiar ground in filming two other sectors of the Chinese economy. There are classes for people who want to learn how to build fan bases, presumably through social media.

One woman explains to eager participants how to monetize fandom.

Another instructor fields questions on how to handle various types of interactions in the growing world of international commerce. How do you hug in a business situation?

How hard should one hug?

The film also documents the lifestyles of newly wealthy Chinese people. A resort hotel and water park feature massive aquariums with sharks and spectacular shows. A team of butlers in training learns how to ring bells to summon servants.

There is no narration and little context. Kingdon filmed in more than 50 locations, but they’re not identified. Sometimes the sound comes from factory machines or captured snippets of conversation, but there is a soundtrack by Dan Deacon, who is known for electronic music performances mashing up song samples.

Kingdon previously made a short film called “Commodity City,” about Yiwa, a sort of massive mall for wholesale distributors of Chinesemade products sold around the globe. That film found the quirky human connections between people working as middlemen.

“Ascension” delivers more of a sense of awe — of the engines of Chinese commerce, the vast workforces, the energy of people driven to make money and the resulting spectacle of rising consumerism.

The extreme ends of the businesses seem worlds apart, but Kingdon connects them in a fascinating look at the daily grind.
