What separates New Orleans native Kim Brandt Burr in the gifts

and home decor industry is that, in addition to selling quintessential New Orleans pieces like door hangers, local art and candles, she sells a variety of items emblazoned with mascots of local high schools. “I call it ‘memorabilia merchandise,’ or our ‘school spirit collection,’ with mascots and logos on tumblers, coasters, earrings and blankets for high school big sisters, little sisters and teachers,” said Burr, a Mt. Carmel graduate and co-owner of Nola Gifts and Decor with her husband Doug. Burr never imagined how much her store would grow when she opened it seven years ago as a Jolie furniture paint retailer. “Now people are asking if we could do the same thing for grammar schools,” she said. Initially, the idea was to sell the specialty paint and teach classes on how to use it on DIY upcycled furniture pieces. Slowly, the store grew into a hyper-local New Orleans and Louisiana-themed gifts and décor spot, now selling items from more than 125 local artists. “I look at one wall in the store and can count over 12 artists represented just on that one wall; we have six local people who just design door hangers,” Burr said. “It evolved organically. I carried the paint line and taught classes and people would come in and ask, ‘Do you have wedding gifts?’” Burr started to add inventory and through word of mouth, more and more artists would pitch her their wares, each item bringing a deep sense of local pride. The store carries New Orleans Saints and LSU T-shirts by local designers, Bonfolk socks that feature little cups of cafe au lait, hand-painted dishes, acrylic barware, wooden wall art, bags, umbrellas, pet items, St. Benedict bracelets, oyster

shell crosses, wedding gifts, frames, seasonal items and much more. “I love hearing stories from artists about how their business got started,” Burr said. “My business is dependent on local customers who support local artists.” Today, Nola Gifts and Decor employs eight people and recently opened a second location on Ormond Boulevard in Destrehan. While it was damaged during Hurricane Ida, the owners hope to reopen it soon. The store still sells Jolie paint — and will resume in-person classes in the paint studio when it is safe to do so, per COVID-19 guidelines. Burr has also added new classes over the years, including door hanger making classes with festive seasonal themes. She runs her home and gift store the exact way she’d want if she was a busy shopper: with guaranteed items for everyone, whether it’s baby clothes or re-

Plus, every purchase comes with complimentary gift wrapping. “When I had small kids and I was running around to birthday parties, I had a stash of gift bags and tape in my car,” Burr said. “We don’t just do basic wrapping; we have pretty curly ribbons and take pride in it. People are coming here because they can get a gift and immediately go wherever they need to go. Customers appreciate that and it makes a big difference.” The store sells a range of one-of-a-kind items by local artists, including face glitter combinations representing local high schools, a hand-painted serving platter with two crawfish second lining and locally made pepper jelly. “Her family has a sugar cane farm, she makes her great-grandmother’s recipe and we all went crazy over it,” Burr said. “It makes me feel good when people reach out to us about their items.”
Nostalgia In addition to two stores, Nola Gifts and Decor has an online shop, shipping gifts — and New Orleans nostalgia — to customers nationwide. “I recently shipped merchandise to Washington state and New York,” Burr said. “When you aren’t in New Orleans, you miss it. Everybody has their own little memories and when you see a kitchen towel with the Superdome and a helmet on it or a pelican and a riverboat, it just touches your heart and it’s good for your soul.” Nola Gifts and Decor is located at 5101 W. of Filipino-American artist Marianne Angeli Rodriguez reflects influences from a life spent growing up around the world. Rodriguez is a contemporary abstract painter selling largescale canvas paintings and paper prints out of a stylish gallery and studio space in downtown Covington. There she and her husband greet customers, suggest where to place art in their homes and offer discounts for framing at a nearby shop. Nationwide retailers like Anthropologie and AllModern have collaborated with Rodriguez to sell her pieces after discovering her work on social media. Born in the Philippines to parents who worked for the United Nations, Rodriguez spent her formative years living in Guatemala, West Africa and England before settling in New Jersey her sophomore year of high school. Her bright, vibrant colors and
wallpaper-worthy eclectic print patterns are a nod to her life experiences — bold brushstrokes inspired by flowers and fruit, folklore, figures and tribal elements. Each piece is a thoughtful melding of cultures that come together in the best way possible. “I like crazy patterns, and the colors come into play from living in all those different countries and appreciating all the different forms of art,” Rodriguez said. “My parents collected art and handicrafts from local artisans from all the places we lived and filled the house. When I lived in Guatemala when I was 12 years old, that was a big [artistic] awakening.” Rodriguez got into painting later in life. She earned her undergraduate degree in anthropology and then studied fashion design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. “I was finally immersed with an art school environment, and it set my whole soul on fire,” she said.

color is the most liberating way to express an idea that can’t be expressed through words,” she said. She soon grew out of her garage art space and moved into a Covington studio space owned by famed New Orleans artist James Michalopoulos. She moved into her own gallery space and studio nearby on North Columbia Street early last year. Her inspiration comes from everywhere, from the Philippines — with its different tribes, islands, dialect and headdresses — to New Orleans with its bold and bright festivities. “You feel that energy and want to meet that energy when creating art,” Rodriguez said. “The nostalgia of a tropical climate is the undercurrent that inspires my process. Bright and vibrant pigments live on my palette.” Her work is on permanent display on the Northshore at St. Tammany Parish Hospital and Southern Hotel, as well as
the Southshore at the Magnolia Hotel, Nolé and the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport. This fall, Rodriguez plans to introduce more original art in smaller canvases in a collection. Her work can be purchased at her gallery or via her online shop — which includes original artwork, prints, hand-painted planters and even a pandemic-era puzzle. “It’s been a long journey,” Rodriguez said. “I didn’t have fine art training, and at first I didn’t know how colors mixed. It’s been a discovery process, but I really enjoy the liberation in working on large-scale canvases. coming from New York.” Rodriguez moved to the city in 2011 into the Blue Plate Artist Lofts and began selling jewelry and watercolor print fashion illustrations at the arts market in now-Marsalis Harmony Park under the brand Markette. A year later, she was featured on the documentary “NOLAbound,” which highlighted artists in the city following Hurricane Katrina. That’s when she met her now-husband Rock Whittington, a musician, who created the film’s soundtrack. A trip to the Philippines for a friend’s wedding in 2015 inspired her to focus more on painting. “When I came back, I went to an art store and bought a big canvas and paint and never looked back,” Rodriguez said. She and her husband moved to Covington where she honed her painting skills, mainly working on 48-inch-by-48-inch canvases. “Painting in an abstract direction and with my use of

After graduating from FIT, Rodriguez worked in public relations in New York and volunteered in Kenya, where her parents were living at the time. There she worked with local artisans who took discarded animal horns and bones unusable for the meat industry and incorporated them into jewelry. She then brought the craft back to the states. It was through jewelry making that Rodriguez had a quintessential introduction to New Orleans. A former classmate encouraged her to come to the city, so she began holding trunk shows at boutiques on Magazine Street and making friends along the way. “I then met this amazing woman at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and she held a trunk show for me at her house on Decatur Street. It was catered and so nice,” Rodriguez said. “It was so shocking how hospitable everyone was, taking me in with open arms,
