How to incorporate different patterns in your home

Introducing new patterns and eclectic designs into your home decor can make a space seem more polished

TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS. IF A PATTERN SPEAKS TO YOU, STICK WITH THAT.

and curated, but it’s easy to overdo it. To avoid an overkill of clashes, two experts, Penny Francis of Eclectic Home and Whitney Jones of Whitney J Decor, offer advice on how to get sophisticated, blended and bold looks — even if you’re an amateur. Above all, they say, be confident and creative. “Don’t be afraid to explore,” Francis says. “I think patterns and prints make a space look highly evolved and interesting.”

WHAT TO DO:

GAMBIT DETAILS

AUGUST 2021

• Geometric patterns are great for the small-scale prints in your space. Francis recommends that geometric patterns have one or two colors at the most from your inspiration print.

8

• If your home does not have an open floor plan, start introducing patterns in the dining room, Francis suggests. “Wallpaper one wall or do a paint coating and have the top portion of the wall be a pattern,” she says. “This is a smaller commitment that still adds drama and interest.” • Remember the rule of three: pairing items in groups of three. “Use scale to your advantage and play with different sized patterns when mixing them in your space,” Francis says. • Jones says swapping out pillow cases with seasonal designs is a way to easily change up the look of a room without breaking the bank. • Start with a big pattern. Find a larger scale print that inspires you and use colors within that print in other patterns you want to introduce into your space, then build off your large print, Francis

says. “For example, if you choose a large-scale floral, try complementing it with a medium stripe. The stripe you choose can be inspired from any color in that large floral. The third pattern you bring into the space needs to be a smaller scale than the stripes.”

• Start small if patterns intimidate you. Try establishing patterns with an accent chair seat cushion or in a throw pillow. Spice up your solid-colored sofa with three throw pillows of different patterns, Francis says.

• If you want a print that’s simple and bold, use a floral. “Newer floral patterns have saturated colors and are modern. It tends to be more palatable for people who aren’t used to patterns,” Jones says.

• If you want a less bold pattern, Jones suggests, “Start with a stripe that incorporates colors you like.” • Trust your instincts. If a pattern speaks to you, stick with that.

LASHING

WHAT TO AVOID: • “Don’t have competing patterns in the same space,” Francis says. “If you have a big floral, don’t put another big floral in the same room or they will clash.” • If you want to spruce up a space that already has a pattern, put a large piece of art on the wall. “You can use art to tone down a print,” Jones says. “A piece of art with a large area of matting and a small piece of art takes your eye away from the wall behind it.” • Don’t try to replicate what you see online. Use your own voice and creativity. • Don’t be afraid of commitment. “Patterns are a commitment issue for people as they think they will get tired of it. But you can’t just put patterns in one room of your house. You have to let it flow throughout the rest of the house, so it doesn’t feel out of place and cut off,” Francis says. • Don’t overdo the styles of patterns. If you’re going to use a lot of patterns, they may need to match the design style of the patterns within the room. Don’t have more than two design style patterns within the space. That way it looks curated and not like a collection of prints.

Magazine Street gift shop Alice & Amelia curates items from New Orleans artists and entrepreneurs By JENNY PETERSON Local gift shop Alice & Amelia, at 4432 Magazine St., is a curated

boutique that offers wares from local artists, entrepreneurs and women-owned businesses. Customers can browse for sustainably made clothing, jewelry, bath products, candles, local cookbooks, cutting boards, porch flags and New Orleans-inspired items like wine glasses etched with a New Orleans map.Owner JoAnne Casey embarked on this new career after nearly three decades living up north and working as an insurance claims agent. She moved back to her hometown of New Orleans and began creating and selling clothing at a booth at local festivals under the label Bywater Clothing, a nod to the area of the city where she grew up. She found success with her first design: “NOLA Girl” — a simple declaration — designed in bold block letters. “I got a booth at the Freret Market and my first day I made a couple hundred dollars,” she says. “It was so different than what I spent 27 years

doing working in corporate environment. Earning your money at a table with a flip-flip on it at a market broadened my horizons, and I had a great time doing it.” After several years of success in the festival circuit, Casey opened brick-andmortar Alice & Amelia six years ago. She named it after her granddaughters. In addition to selling clothing with her own designs, Casey curates items from artists and entrepreneurs that are locally made, handmade or sourced from small makers. “I met a lot of local artists, and the store just kind of evolved. A lot of things come from small businesses and women-owned businesses in both New Orleans and throughout the country,” Casey says. “I get a good mix of things that are aesthetically pleasing and things I’d like to have for myself.” Staples items include T-shirts, bags and bumper stickers with her original NOLA Girl design, as well as another original — crawfish spilling out of a pot with the words “boil advisory” on it, available on a T-shirt or a door hanger. She commis-

sioned a local artist to draw the image. Casey partners with the Young Leadership Council to sell the official T-shirts at a booth at the Wednesday at the Square concert series and year-round at the store. She sells the organization’s “Proud to Call It Home” garden flags and porch flags. During the 2021 Carnival season, when Mardi Gras parades were cancelled, Alice & Amelia sold “Yardi Gras” signs for residents to put in their yards. “There is so much pride for the city here in New Orleans, it was mind blowing how many people came in every day, and word of mouth spread about the yard signs. January is usually slow but this January we were busy every single day,” Casey says. Alice & Amelia constantly adds new items from unique and local designers. A recent successful partnership was adding a locally designed linen-cotton blend guayabera shirt. “The designer first approached me at my booth at Wednesday at the Square and said, ‘Can you try to sell a dozen?’ in

different sizes and designs, and I said, ‘That’s a lot of inventory but, OK, we’ll try it,’ and the amount we have sold has been surprising,” Casey says. Her expansion into men’s items includes locally made men’s bowties from Nola Beaux Ties. She sells socks for men and women by local company Bonfolk, which has a mission to donate a pair of socks to someone in need for every pair sold. “My store keeps evolving,” she says. “Just recently, a younger friend said to me, ‘I just had a baby, what about expanding baby and children?’ and I’ve worked diligently to do that.” A new effort has been creating a T-shirt design to benefit local animal rescue organizations and hosting a 5K race and auction. “I drove by a pet adoption day and came home with a dog and started donating to Animal Rescue New Orleans and Zeus’ Rescues. And I thought, ‘What else can I do?’” Casey says. “I started a 5K road race and auction and created the NOLA Girl charitable giving nonprofit, and we raised $25,000 in our third year.”

Alice & Amelia owner Joanne Casey PHOTO BY NATALIA MATAL ANA

Her design is of three dogs doing a second line, which is emblazoned on race T-shirts and the winner’s medal. The T-shirt is available at the store year-round. This year’s NOLA Dogs Race to the Rescue will be Nov. 28 at Lafreniere Park in Metairie. Visit www.shopaliceandamelia.com to register. Casey still has plans to have a presence at festivals, like the Fall Garden Festival at City Park set for Sept. 11-12. “I love doing festivals where I get to meet and make new friends,” she says. Casey says customer loyalty and local interest in supporting New Orleans artists allowed her to weather the pandemic. “The longer we’ve been here, the more locals find us. and I believe when people come in here once, they’ll come again and again,” Casey says. “We were fortunate that we had enough loyal customers and people felt loyal to the city and felt loyal to their neighbors on Magazine Street.” Visit shopaliceandamelia.com to see inventory and purchase items online.
