LAFITTE GREENWAY is a lush strip of grass with a pedestrian walkway, bike path, and plant life and spans multiple neighborhoods, including Mid-City, Treme, Tulane-Gravier, and Bayou St. John. The southern tail of the greenway ends in historic Louis Armstrong Park, and beyond that is the French Quarter. The greenway’s northern end curves at Jefferson Davis Parkway, where paths designated for bikers and pedestrians continue into Broadmoor.

STRETCHING FROM THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER TO CITY PARK, Esplanade Avenue once was a neighborhood of affluent Creole residents and their 19th century mansions. Many of the grand houses remain, including the Degas House, where painter Edgar Degas created some of his most famous paintings while visiting relatives. The house now is a bed and breakfast with a small museum. Near the riverfront is the Old U.S. Mint, the only one in the United States that minted money both for the federal government and the Confederacy. It now is the New Orleans Jazz Museum and hosts live music most days.

In the early to mid 1800s, Esplanade Avenue was a major artery for transporting goods from the Mississippi River to Bayou St. John, which connects with Lake Pontchartrain.

CONNECTING UPTOWN AND DOWNTOWN, this street is a commercial corridor full of sidewalk cafes, bistros and live music.

Located near Tulane and Loyola universities, it is a perfect place for college students to grab a bite to eat. The music venue Gasa Gasa is hard to miss, with its large mural of four men spanning the entire front of the building and a fence.

LAGNIAPPE On the first Saturday of each April, the Freret Street festival showcases what the street has to offer, with live music on several stages and blocks of food, art and a variety of vendors.

WHERE TO EAT Dat Dog now has locations in Lafayette and College Station, Texas, but Freret Street is where the gourmet hot dog company originated. Midway Pizza has deep-dish pies, or grab a pimiento cheese-topped burger from the High Hat Cafe.

OAK STREET IS A CHARMING STREET tucked between the university area Uptown, the Leonidas neighborhood and the Mississippi River. Shops, restaurants and watering holes are mainly concentrated on Oak Street, with a few notable spots, such as Camellia Grill and Carrollton Station, just a few blocks away. The stage at the historic Maple Leaf Bar has hosted Rebirth Brass Band, Bruce Springsteen and others.

But there’s a quieter side to the street as it crosses Bayou St. John and cuts through the shaded oaks covering City Park. Visitors should check out the area’s various eateries and the outdoor art market, Harrison Avenue Marketplace, in the Lakeview Grocery parking lot on the second Wednesday of most months.

Lakeview expanded after World War II when veterans began to build homes there, and Harrison Avenue became a business corridor.

Block parties and Champagne strolls are common, keeping shops open later and giving shoppers a reason to hang around.

The street once was an incubator for the civil rights movement and a hub for minority-owned businesses.
