Q. How many people cast ballots this year? A. We had more than 17,000 ballots with a total of 148,209 votes among them. Q. Why don’t you do editors’ picks? A. We have in previous years, but it’s nice to have one issue where the readers have their say without our opinions inserted. Q. Are the results really real? Or do you tweak them? Does advertising have any influence on what gets awarded? A. The results are really real; in many cases, they’re not what we might have chosen at all. And, no, our advertising department holds no sway over the winners. (They do know who placed in the Top 3, however.) Q. Have you ever thought of running an initial round of voting and then a second round of runoffs? A. Yes. Many other alt-weeklies run their Best Of contests that way. We may try it at some point. Q. Do people try to cheat? How do you prevent it? A. Yes, they do. And we have our ways. Q. Why don’t you have a category for ________ ? A. We switch up categories every year, putting in new ones and dropping some old ones. If you want to make the case for a specific category for next year’s ballot, drop an email to Managing editor Kandace power Graves at kandaceg@gambitweekly.com. Q. How do you know Russian hackers haven’t tampered with the election results? A.ВВВВВВВВВВВВВВВВВВВВВВВВВВВ«ВВВВВВВВВВВВВ ВВВВВВВ» And now, without further ado: Welcome to the Best of New Orleans 2018.

Welcome to the 2018 edition of Best of New Orleans (around the office, we just call it #BONO2018, and you are welcome to do the same, particularly on social media where some of you undoubtedly will complain about the results). As usual, Gambit readers have plenty of opinions — and we’ve tried to anticipate some of the questions you might have as well.

Moroccan carrot salad is a small plate menu item at Saba.

»1. Saba

(5757 Magazine st., 504-324-7770; www.eatwithsaba.com) — Chef Alon shaya and his pomegranate Hospitality team opened saba in May, and it caught on as quickly with local diners as shaya, his previous modern Israeli restaurant on Magazine street. (That restaurant retains his name though it’s owned by chef John Besh’s restaurant group.) At saba, diners tear open thick steaming rounds of pita bread to eat with sharable plates of labneh, Bulgarian feta cheese, the roasted eggplant and tomato dish lutenitsa, and silky hummus topped with lamb, crab or vegetables. The new restaurant has a large bar, a communal table near the bread oven and family-style platters of harissa-roasted chicken, short ribs or whole striped bass. even the cocktails feature warming Middle eastern spice notes, such as baharat, Aleppo peppers and cardamom in some concoctions. 2. For more than 50 years, the parish stronghold has ensured that no visit to Chalmette is complete without a trek to its mecca of long macaroni noodles rolled around in melted cheese and topped with a mountain of red gravy, towering tangles of onion rings, veal parmesan and other face-sized plates, all guaranteeing no weary traveler leaves hungry. 2. With coffee names like “kossa geshe” and “Huehuetenango,” you may feel like you’re ordering something more exotic than your morning (or afternoon or evening) cup of joe, but that’s the experience that owner Geoffrey Meeker and the employees at each of the shop’s three (soon to be four) locations want customers to have. French Truck’s beans are roasted in small batches to maintain freshness and hail from countries ranging from Colombia to ethiopia. If you can’t make it in person to one of its sunny yellow buildings, the beans are sold at plenty of area grocery stores. 2. PJ’s Coffee (Citywide; www.pjscoffee.com) 3. The Doobin Loobin sandwich with a side of Brussels sprouts at Blue Oak BBQ, winner of Best Barbecue Restaurant.

BesT BARBECUE RESTAURANT »1. Blue Oak BBQ

(900 N. Carrollton Ave., 504-822-2583; www.blueoakbbq.com) — Diners do a lot for themselves at Blue Oak BBQ, including lining up separately at the food window and the bar and carting their own paper towel rolls and ramekins of sauces. But Blue Oak gets its part just right, delivering juicy ribs, mounds of pulled pork, tender brisket and crusty burnt ends, and more. It also is known for nachos topped with smoked meats and tangy barbecue sauce, and the eatery has gotten creative with specials such as croissant sandwiches filled with brisket, brisket-filled philly sandwiches and a reuben burger with a pastrami-cured brisket patty topped with swiss cheese and russian dressing. There’s plenty of seating at heavy wooden tables inside and out, and the patio is dog friendly and has a large TV for watching sports. 2. Pizza Delicious won Best Pizza Restaurant.

BesT PIZZA RESTAURANT »1. Pizza Delicious

(617 piety st., 504-676-8482; www.pizzadelicious.com) — pizza D returns to the top spot to claim the Best of New Orleans title for the second time since its brick-and-mortar restaurant opened in 2012. The Bywater spot from Michael Friedman and Greg Augarten is deceptively no-frills, an homage to the pizza joints of their native Northeast — there’s a short menu of pizzas, a few salads and pastas, pepperoni rolls, garlic knots and some beer and wine. But their New York-style pies and specialty slices (think stuffed artichoke, mushrooms and pancetta or braised Brussels sprouts) have attracted a diehard fanbase that has followed its run as a weekend pop-up to its wildly popular counter service restaurant. 2. (538 Hagan Ave., 504-482-3047; www.parkwaypoorboys.com) — When New Yorker cartoonist Will Mcphail came to New Orleans a few months ago, he wrote, “parkway Bakery’s po-boys are a hug from your fun uncle.” everybody has a favorite, whether it’s the classic drippy roast beef, the surf-n-turf (roast beef with shrimp), fried seafood, or even the sweet potato version or the Caprese (stuffed with tomatoes, mozzarella and basil). There’s also a bar where you can meet interesting locals and adventurous tourists, and on nice days there’s nothing better than getting lunch to go and eating it on the banks of Bayou st. John. Overseeing all of this is head chef Justin Kennedy, who also oversees the restaurant’s many charity operations and spends time meeting customers. stop in to meet Justin and his bulldog rockwell. 2. From pump failures, turbine fires, backed-up storm drains, crumbling infrastructure, Cedric Grant’s whole … thing, and the likely mismanagement of billions of public dollars, to Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s “we are a city that floods” and threats to cut off water while customers work to untangle endless billing issues, lawsuits are filed and pay raises are approved — yeah, we couldn’t pick just one either. Taking the No. 1 spot this year for one of our favorite categories is the sewerage & Water Board, as in, An entire utility.

>> 1. Helena Moreno City Council Vice president Helena Moreno just celebrated 100 days on the job, but New Orleans constituents know her well for her seven-plus years as District 93’s state representative. Moreno, a Democrat, had a knack for getting her colleagues — many of them republicans — to support a number of progressive bills, including a slate of sexual assault and domestic violence laws and restoring funding to keep local health clinics open. since taking council office in May, she’s introduced a comprehensive sexual harassment policy for city employees, worked with her fellow council members to unanimously pass an ordinance giving police officers wide latitude to write tickets rather than jail offenders on minor traffic offenses, and also has worked to hold entergy and the sewerage & Water Board’s feet to the fire. Her latest collaboration is helping put the “regional” in the regional Transit Authority, working with Jefferson parish Councilwoman Cynthia Lee-sheng to examine ways the two parishes’ transit systems can mesh more smoothly. 2. BesT MARDI GRAS PARADE >> 1. Muses

(www.kreweofmuses.org) — The 2018 Krewe of Muses parade was a brush with genius, as the satirical group added local color to famous works of art in a procession titled A Night at the Museum. Former Mayor Mitch Landrieu crossed a sewerage & Water Board-flooded Canal street a la Washington crossing the Delaware. The couple in Grant Woods’ American Gothic went truly punk in appearance. New Orleans pelican Anthony Davis’ unibrow subbed in for painter Frida Kahlo’s. But the krewe’s new “Goddessey” float is itself a work of art — featuring a boat hull born by a gold-leaf pegasus on a sea of clouds, all lit from above with peach lanterns hanging from extended branches of a tree rooted in mount parnassus, where the nine muses lived. 2. It was repaired more quickly than the estimated two weeks — and I didn’t know what to expect when I picked it up. It looked like it did the day I drove it off the lot. And my elderly battery finally had died — not their fault, but it happened while it was on their lot, so they replaced it for free. Is royal Honda the area’s best car dealership? Y’all think so. All I can say is the staff has certainly treated me right. 2. Lakeside Toyota (3701 N. Causeway Blvd., Metairie, 504-833-3311; www.lakesidetoyota.com)

PREVIEW Thou BY ALeX WOODWArD THE ERASURE OF ALL-AGES BASEMENTLIKE VENUES and resolute DIY spaces in New Orleans — from Mid-City’s Banks street Warehouse, downtown’s The A.r.K., and, more recently, the Big Top 3 ring Circus in uptown — merely forced the city’s disparate DIY scene to adapt to scattered generator-powered shows in parking lots and skateparks, art galleries and movie theaters and in living rooms and coffee shops. Bryan Funck is the longtime, unsung adhesive for south Louisiana’s DIY network, and as vocalist with Baton rouge-New Orleans band Thou, among his longest-running projects, he’s amassed a book-length manifesto encompassing radical destruction and critical dissections of scene politics and himself, while anchoring more than a decade of New Orleans DIY and punk through Hurricane Katrina and the levee failures. Funck’s affinity for monochromatic New romantic, renaissance, Victorian and biblical imagery — done tongue-in-cheek to satirize performative “punk” aesthetics — stitches together countless show flyers, album artwork, eps, cassettes, Lps and other ephemera, the threads of punk scene propaganda masquerading as a prolific metal band. The band’s latest, Magus, a double Lp debut for sacred Bones records, was teased with three eps released this summer, each focused on a distinct sound subsumed by Magus‘ shroud. The grim The House Primordial returned Thou to its caustic beginnings, visceral doom and raw drone warped by feedback and static. The band followed with Inconsolable, released on Community records and largely stripping Thou of its volume, replaced with a meditative and acoustic score that weighs as much as its titanic riffs, then Rhea Sylvia, indulging the band’s ’90s grunge worship. Funck’s dense screeds — words as heavy as the riffs accompanying them — burn like acid, carried in a thick smog weaving around gorgeous, impenetrably heavy riffs from guitarists Andy Gibbs and Matthew Thudium. Funck’s verses are secular prayers and scathing self-critiques, blistering prose laying waste to policing, supremacy, pacifism, gentrification and all of Baton rouge, all while alternately clutching to and denouncing death, destruction, alienation and fatigue. He embraces the absurdity of humanity not in resignation to it, but to conjure those bleak existential desires and submission to the forever-looming darkness as a means to purge them, pinning them to a wall and then bulldozing that wall. Magus is the sound of rowing against the struggle’s wake and resisting an impulse to give up. The band’s album release show also is the live debut of New Orleans’ MJ Guider, whose acclaimed 2017 album Precious Systems (Kranky records) wanders into that post-industrial decay, guided by sonic extremes and thriving on the pulse that binds them. Free admission. 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31 at Defend New Orleans, 600 Carondelet St., Suite 140.

BY D. erIC BOOKHArDT THE PARALLELS BETWEEN visual art and music always have hidden in plain sight, yet that topic rarely is mentioned in art history books. Like music, visual art can resonate harmonically, or not, and even some carefully curated exhibitions can come across as tone deaf. Others maximize visual polyphony in ways that enhance how we experience even very diverse works, as we see in this 10th anniversary exhibition at Octavia Art Gallery featuring work by 10 artists. regina scully sets the tone with Inner Journey (pictured), a composition that subtly suggests a city inundated by massive blue waves that seem to frolic as playfully as dolphins. What it means is up to us, but as a composition it flows like an orchestral tone poem. Blue tones also permeate philemona Williamson’s Limbs canvas, where two kids seem to float amid entangled tree limbs under a dreamy azure sky. In the most famous 20th-century music-based painting, piet Mondrian’s Broadway Boogie Woogie, colored squares pulsate to the artist’s inner rhythms, but here Mason saltarrelli takes colored patches on a meandering walk on the wild side in an untitled work that visually evokes an edgy modern jazz riff. James Henderson’s Flowers — a spray-painted outline of a man in a bow tie with a collage of old photos where his face should be — reads like graffiti, but look again and those brown, purple and yellow splotches on a ragged green background suggest a nihilistic — or abstract jazz — take on Andy Warhol’s iconic flower prints. Conversely, Anne senstad’s minimal Soft Geometry light sculpture rendered in crimson, purple and turquoise neon glows with an otherworldly resonance that contrasts with the aura of a hot tungsten filament — or Miles Davis high note — in Jerry Cabrera’s minimal acrylic painting Haven. Both differ from with the smoldering tones in Jeffrey pitt’s Nuclear Power painting ironically rendered in patterning reminiscent of Victorian velvet wallpaper. These works may come from very different places, but their placement in such a visually attuned installation allows for an unusually expansive and self-explanatory viewing experience. Through Sept. 29. Octavia Art Gallery, 454 Julia St., (504) 309-4249; www.octaviaartgallery.com.
