Zeus’ Place

READERS’ POLL

WELCOME TO THE 2020 EDITION OF BEST OF NEW ORLEANS. In a season dominated by talk of voting, Gambit’s readers have already delivered their ballots — and what could be easier than voting for their favorite things. Gambit tabulated thousands of ballots for the best restaurants, bars, shops and attractions as well as favorite local media personalities and politicians. These votes were cast by you, our gentle and reasonable readers. The results fill this issue of Gambit. Gambit readers always have opinions — especially about their own opinions — so we’ve tried to anticipate some of the questions you might have as well.

Q. Who chooses the winners? A. You, the readers, do. Not the

Illuminati. Not the liberal lamestream media. The results are entirely based on the voting done online by our readers. Gambit editors had no say in who won. This is all your fault.

Q. Are the results legit? Does advertising have any influence on what gets awarded? A. The results are never tweaked,

weighted or in any way adulterated. The United Nations does not control the process, despite their best efforts. And our advertising department holds no sway over the winners. They do know who placed in the Top three before the issue comes out, however.

Q. Are there nominations or run-offs? A. Some alt-weeklies run their

Best Of contests with those rounds. That seems like a lot of extra work. Gambit has one round of voting, and voters can cast their votes for any entrant relevant to the category.

Q. Do people try to cheat? How do you prevent it? A. Yes, they do. We would

honestly be disappointed if they didn’t. And we have our ways of preventing them (cue ominous knuckle cracking sound).

Q. Who are the people featured on the section opening pages? A. We invited some locals who are active on social media to share some of their favorite things about New Orleans. So news anchor Karen Swensen, photographer Sthaddeus “Polo Silk” Terrell, life coach Alisha Reed and others kindly shared some of their picks.

Q. Why don’t you have a category for ________ ? A. We switch up categories every

year, putting in new ones and dropping some old ones. If you want to make the case for a specific category — like Best Pothole or Best Gas Station to Buy Beef Jerky at 6 a.m., for instance — being on next year’s ballot, drop an email to response@gambitweekly.com.

Q. No but seriously, it’s rigged right? A. No, seriously, it’s not. This ain’t

the NFL, bruh. None of us moonlight as referees.

BEST CHEF 1 Nina Compton 2018 was a good year for Nina Compton. She opened her second restaurant, Bywater American Bistro, and she was honored as Best Chef: South by the James Beard Foundation. This year hasn’t been as smooth. Bywater American Bistro celebrated its second birthday weeks before the pandemic shutdowns. Her first restaurant, Compere Lapin, remains closed. But she retooled Bywater American Bistro for dine-in and takeout, with dishes such as curried rabbit with coconut rice and peas, and Italian malfatti dumplings with Gulf shrimp and tomato and okra stew. And on top of coping with the challenges of keeping her restaurants afloat, Compton has been featured in the media almost as much as her time on season 11 of “Top Chef.” In late August, The New Yorker published a glowing profile, in which Compton discussed her life in top kitchens from New York to Miami, getting ahead as a woman in male-dominated, old-world style kitchens, and rethinking restaurants. She also spoke to the Beard Foundation about maintaining balance in life while running a kitchen. The native of St. Lucia also is helping rethink New Orleans cooking, reflecting influences from the Caribbean and beyond. Last summer, the New York Times profiled her among 16 Black chefs changing food in America. She’s won over local diners, including our readers, and she’s got the rest of the food world paying attention as well. 2 Frank Brigtsen 3 Susan Spicer 3 Tory McPhail P H OTO B Y S O P H I A G E R M E R // T H E T I M E S - P I C AY U N E | T H E N E W O R L E A N S A DVO C AT E

BEST LATIN AMERICAN RESTAURANT 1 Mais Arepas

(1200 Carondelet St., 504-523-6247; facebook. com/maisarepas) New Orleans has an expanding array of Latin American cuisines to choose from, including Brazilian, Peruvian and Venezuelan restaurants. But our voters’ top choice is Colombian cuisine from Mais Arepas. It specializes in the namesake arepas, the slightly sweet rounds made with corn flour and shaped like pita bread. Mais Arepas stuffs its arepas with everything from roast pork to skirt steak, grilled chorizo, Gulf shrimp or ham. The kitchen dresses the sandwiches with avocado, salsa rosado, cheese, aji amarillo pepper sauce, cranberry beans, plantain chips and more. The menu also includes ceviche, empanadas, and the bandeja paisa, a heaping country-style platter of meats, plantains, garlic rice, avocado and more, named for the nation’s rural mountainous region at the tip of the Andes. Here, it’s all served in the more urbane setting of a stylish but casual cafe just off St. Charles Avenue and the Warehouse District. 2 Baru Bistro and Tapas (3700 Magazine St., 504895-2225; barutapasnola.com) 3 Tito’s Ceviche & Pisco (5015 Magazine St., 504267-7612; titoscevichepisco.com)

Paradise Park lager is one of Urban South Brewery’s flagship beers.

BEST LOCAL BREWERY 1 Urban South Brewery

(1645 Tchoupitoulas St., 504-267-4852; urbansouthbrewery.com) New signage and logos in turquoise, magenta and yellow make Urban South Brewery look like the “South” means Miami, but it’s just shaking things up at a fast-moving business. Urban South opened a second location in Houston early in 2020, and since the pandemic kicked in, it’s been more creative than ever. While the brewery continues to churn out flagships like Paradise Park lager (in teal cans with pink flamingos), Holy Roller IPA and Who Dat golden ale, it’s been on a mission to release new beers every week at its taproom in the Lower Garden District. That’s meant dozens of new brews, including a super fruity, thick-bodied Spilled series, which was developed in the Houston taproom with the addition of chunky pulp. Summer versions included strawberry-watermelon and pina colada flavors. The brewery also introduced a line of spiked seltzers. Urban South was one of the first local breweries to release a Black Is Beautiful beer, an international initiative based on Texas brewery Weathered Souls’ recipe for an imperial stout. Breweries released their own versions and are donating the profits to local social justice causes and nonprofit organizations in response to protests against racism and police brutality. The brewery also recently started a similar effort, releasing a Coastal Harmony beer to benefit victims of Hurricane Laura. 2 Port Orleans Brewing Co. BEST NORTHSHORE RESTAURANT BEST NEW ORLEANS RESTAURANT 1 Commander’s Palace

(1403 Washington Ave., 504-899-8221; commanderspalace.com) Perhaps absence made the heart grow fonder, because readers voted the Garden District landmark tops in four categories during weeks when its doors were closed to diners. Our readers voted it Best New Orleans Restaurant, Best Traditional Louisiana Restaurant, Best Restaurant for Romantic Dining and Best Place to Get a Martini. The modern Creole dining institution reopened Sept. 11 for dinner and brunch service, and diners can spread out among its many dining rooms and courtyard. But Commander’s found plenty of ways to stay in touch during the intervening six months. It launched a weekly wineand-cheese tasting event, drawing on its wine cellar, and broadcasts on Zoom have been like themed variety shows hosted by sommelier Dan Davis. Commander’s also began shipping full meals to eat at home and offers takeout. Commander’s executive chef Tory McPhail also tied for third as our readers’ favorite chef. 2 GW Fins (808 Bienville St., 504-581-3467; gwfins. com) 3 Clancy’s Restaurant (6100 Annunciation St., 504895-1111; clancysneworleans.com)

BEST NEW RESTAURANT (OPENED OCTOBER 2019 OR LATER) 1 NOLA Caye

(898 Baronne St., 504-302-1302; nolacaye.com) NOLA Caye owners Bryan and Brooke Zar have plenty of experience in the local restaurant scene. Their first restaurant was the more traditional Restaurant des Familles, which was damaged in a fire in July. But there’s Caribbean inspiration behind the creative food at NOLA Caye, which opened last year in an airy space on the ground floor of the Domio hotel in the Warehouse District. Colorful cocktails include a hibiscus margarita and a sky-blue Coconut Cloud. Tropical fruits and dramatic presentations keep plates bright. The menu hits points around the Caribbean, with Jamaican-style jerk chicken and braised oxtail, a Cuban sandwich, conch fritters, coconut shrimp, plantain chips and more. For seafood, there’s tuna ceviche, fried oysters, grilled fish and lobster rolls, amongst other offerings. A short list of tacos draws on Latin flavors as well. NOLA Caye expanded its outdoor seating during the pandemic, and it’s one of our readers’ favorite new ports of call. 2 Blue Giant (1300 Magazine St., 504-582-9060; bluegiantnola.com) 3 Cho Thai (3218 Magazine St., 504-381-4264; chothairestaurant.com)

BEST PLACE FOR CURBSIDE PICKUP 1 Blue Oak BBQ

(900 N. Carrollton Ave., 504-822-2583; blueoakbbq.com) For Blue Oak BBQ, setting up tents and serving massive quantities of barbecue in spring normally would mean it’s time for the Hogs for the Cause festival. That event was cancelled this year, but Blue Oak BBQ was one of the early heavy hitters in the switch to curbside pickup. In late March, Blue Oak offered a short menu of family pack meals built around four-pound blocks of shrink-wrapped brisket or pulled pork. The restaurant later kept pace with the city’s reopening phases, returning to its regular menu and welcoming diners back to its picnic tables and patio tables on an oak-lined stretch of North Carrollton Avenue. But curbside pick-up continued from the tent, and diners can still brown bag it by ordering a big family-style spread featuring “all the meats and all the sides.”

1 Zea Rotisserie & Bar

(Citywide; zearestaurants.com) Area Zea restaurants pivoted to offer a full spectrum of choices, from dine-in to takeout and curbside pickup. The full menu of rotisserie-cooked meats, Creole and seafood dishes, salads, sharable items and full family-packed meals can be delivered right to patron’s parked cars. 2 Copelands of New Orleans (Citywide; copelandsofneworleans.com) 3 Parkway Bakery & Tavern (538 Hagan Ave., 504-482-3047; parkwaypoorboys.com)

It’s the availability of samples that helps sweet tooths, or those who prefer more savory ice creams, to explore its offerings and find an exotic new favorite. Diners also had to do without cones. But for people who know they want black and gold crunch, peanut butter fudge pie, Mango Unchained (made with cayenne pepper), grapefruit shandy sorbet or olive oil and sea salt ice cream, these parlors hit the spot. Locations include the original shop in a former McKenzie’s Bakery on Prytania Street, a Lakeview store and one on Metairie Road. There’s also a shop in Bay St. Louis and Creole Creamery flavors are available at Rieger’s on the Trace in Mandeville. 2 Angelo Brocato (214 N. M.S. Rau expanded its gallery space in the French Quarter.

BEST ANTIQUES STORE 1 M.S. Rau Antiques

(630 Royal St., 888-557-2406; rauantiques.com) New Orleanians have been familiar with M.S. Rau for generations. The century-old antiques and art shop has occupied a sprawling array of galleries facing Royal Street stretching under a block in the heart of the French Quarter. Last year, Rau completed a massive renovation and nearly doubled its size with the addition of 19,000 square feet of gallery space. That gave locals plenty more to explore in the realms of antiques, fine art and jewelry. There are extensive offerings of paintings and sculpture by master artists, furniture, silver service pieces, porcelain, clocks, watches, canes, music boxes and much more by top craftsmen and artisans. There also is photography, gemstones and all manner of fine collectibles and oddities. For 10 years, the business has held an art competition for area students and awards scholarships to winners. 2 Dop Antiques (300 Jefferson Highway, Building 1, 504-373-5132; dopantiques.com) 3 Renaissance Interiors (2727 Edenborn Ave., Metairie, 504-4543320; yourrenaissance.com)

Miss Claudia’s holds an arsenal of wigs, hats, sunglasses, and other accessories that are affordable for the costume-loving masses, whether one is in need of an eye-catching bauble, a sequined suit jacket, a vintage negligee or a fullblown burlesque outfit. 2 Uptown Costume & Dancewear (4326 Magazine St., 504-895-7969; facebook.com/uptowncostumeanddancewear) 3 Humbug (2707 Williams Blvd, Kenner; 504-469-3339; humbugcostumes.com)

Octavia Books is our readers favorite local bookstore.

1 Rouses Markets

(513 Octavia St., 504-899-7323; octaviabooks.com) A welcoming staff ready to help booklovers finally settle on the right title — or stack of titles, as many people have needed while stuck more at home during the pandemic — has made this small Uptown shop near the corner of Octavia and Laurel streets a favorite for both local readers and authors. It’s also got a good selection for young readers. During the pandemic, Octavia Books has kept up virtual author chats including with locals Richard Campanella, Sandy Rosenthal and Ted Jackson around their recently published works. After the initial pandemic closures, Octavia quickly adjusted, and provides customers with pre-order pickup and home delivery options, as well as physically distant browsing. 2 Garden District Book Shop (2727 Prytania St., 504-895-2266; gardendistrictbookshop.com) 3 Blue Cypress Books (8126 Oak St., 504-352-0096; facebook.com/ bluecypressbooks)

BEST LOCALLY OWNED MUSIC STORE 1 Peaches Records

(4318 Magazine St., 504-282-3322; peachesrecordsandtapes.com) The Peaches Records space on Magazine Street has a throwback feel. That may be in part due to the retro lunch counter that remains from a Woolworth’s store that used to occupy the space. But Peaches is a local institution, founded by Shirani Rae in 1975. Over the decades, there have been Peaches locations around the city, from Gentilly to the French Quarter to the Riverbend. The Uptown spot still has all sorts of music on old media, including vinyl, tapes, CDs and much more, all spread out in easy-to-browse racks. (There are even the wooden peach crates that were just the right size to store records.) Local bands are well represented, including on vinyl when available. The store long has had a strong connection to local bounce and hip-hop artists, who sometimes DJ sets in the store. The picture windows in the front feature work by local artists, and it’s easy to see how Peaches connects with locals. 2 Louisiana Music Factory (421 Frenchmen St., 504-586-1094; louisianamusicfactory.com) 3 Euclid Records (3301 Chartres St., 504-9474348; euclidneworleans.com) P H OTO B Y M AT T H E W H I N TO N / T H E T I M E S - P I C AY U N E | T H E A DVO C AT E

(Citywide; rouses.com) Rouses in 2020 is celebrating its 60th year in business, still family-owned and Louisiana based, but with 64 stores in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, it’s a considerable operation. At many locations, shoppers can peruse butcher and seafood counters, a deli, a salad bar, a hot line, a kiosk of marinated olives, produce, a bakery, a coffee bar, a walk-in cooler full of brews from regional breweries, liquor, wine, flowers and more. Rep. Cedric Richmond speaks during a House Judiciary Committee meeting.

BEST U.S. CONGRESS MEMBER FROM LOUISIANA 1 Rep. Cedric Richmond

A brutal takedown of U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) during a House judiciary meeting earned New Orleans native Cedric Richmond some well-deserved media attention over the summer, and introduced the nation to our readers’ favorite member of Congress. The viral clip of the two lawmakers arguing about systemic racism in law enforcement highlighted the painful divisiveness of the current American political climate — but also showed that one should not mess with the charismatic “gentleman from Louisiana.” Richmond in recent months has co-sponsored bills to help put an end to discrimination in law enforcement and also has fought to improve the health of minorities. And some speculate that if Joe Biden is elected president, Richmond, who is co-chairman of Biden’s campaign, could be appointed to a high-level position in the administration, which would also help keep New Orleans in the national spotlight. 2 Rep. Steve Scalise 3 Sen. John Kennedy

P H OTO B Y S O P H I A G E R M E R / T H E T I M E S - P I C AY U N E | T H E N E W O R L E A N S A DVO C AT E

As a progressive in the Republican-dominated Louisiana Legislature, Rep. Mandie Landry of New Orleans faces uphill battles as she works on legislation that ranges from protecting women’s reproductive rights to fixing cracks in a dysfunctional criminal justice system. While her science-denying colleagues across the aisle generate headlines for their refusal to wear face masks during a pandemic, Landry, who has only just begun her political journey, has remained focused on helping the state’s vulnerable populations. She also takes a down to earth approach to engaging with her constituency, often through social media, where she not only posts updates about her work but also plenty of cute dog content — a strategy that’s clearly won her the hearts of Gambit readers this year. 2 Sen. Cameron Henry 3 Rep. Stephanie Hilferty

Melissa Weber, aka DJ Soul Sister, does her “Soul Power” WWOZ radio show on Saturday nights.

BEST RADIO STATION 1 WWOZ 90.7 FM

There is ample reason in normal years for WWOZ 90.7 FM to top the list as the city’s best radio station — as it has before — but in 2020 the station has been a tether for New Orleanians accustomed to live music and big crowds forced into isolation by the COVID-19 pandemic. As stay-at-home orders closed live music venues and introduced physical distancing, ‘OZ quickly launched OnlineWire to collect live-streaming gigs and curated a list of helpful materials for out of work musicians. In April, the station stepped in to fill the void left by a cancelled New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival with “Jazz Festing in Place,” broadcasting dozens of performances pulled from the archives of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation, which owns ‘OZ. (Read more about Festing in Place on page 77.) The Jazz Fest stand-in was a hit, and ‘OZ hosted another seven-day Festing in Place in early September. ‘OZ also recently launched Groovapedia, a portal on its website for recent and archival audio, video and photos from New Orleans’ music history. 2 WWL 870 AM 3 WWNO 89.9 FM

Crawfish is great. Beignets are great. At Katie’s, they take a little bit of both (minus the powdered sugar) to make something so good that it was featured on the Food Network’s “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.” In just one bite, you get crawfish, cheddar, mozzarella, jalapenos, caramelized onions and a jalapeno aioli. Talk about flavor!

Having a hard time deciding what kind of gumbo to order? That won’t be a problem at Chef Ron’s Gumbo Stop in Metairie! The fan favorite Yumbo Mumbo Gumbo is filled to the brim with file, chicken, shrimp, crabmeat, crawfish, sausage, okra and tomato, then topped with golden fried shrimp – perfect for dipping in the gumbo or eating on the side!

Professor Longhair is the patron saint of Uptown music club Tipitina’s.

BEST LIVE MUSIC VENUE 1 Tipitina’s

(501 Napoleon Ave., 504-895-8477; tipitinas.com) Opened in 1977, Tipitina’s has become as much of an icon for New Orleans music as the legendary musicians that have graced its stage. The yellow Uptown building, the banana logo — rumored to be a holdover from when Tip’s randomly included a juice bar — and the Professor Longhair mural looming over the stage are beloved locally and well-known nationally. In August, Tip’s launched a web series of concerts, recorded in the empty club, to help keep the music alive during a pandemic that has created a dangerous, uncertain situation for live music venues and for bands. The first season kicked off with Galactic, whose members bought Tipitina’s in 2018, and included performances by Rebirth Brass Band, Anders Osborne, Tank and the Bangas, Samantha Fish and The Radiators. 2 House of Blues (225 Decatur St., 504-310-4999; houseofblues.com/neworleans) 3 Rock ’n’ Bowl (3016 S. BEST MUSIC ARTIST / BAND 1 The Revivalists

The Revivalists had an exciting 2019. The rock band opened for The Rolling Stones, was joined by comedian Bob Saget to cover The Who’s “My Generation,” headlined for the first time the Gentilly Stage at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, and sold out both its Revheads Ball and New Year’s Eve shows to close out the year. Like musicians everywhere, 2020 has largely been a lost year for The Revivalists, thanks to COVID-19. Still, the group returned to the stage in July to play the final show of the sold-out NOLA Drive-In Summer Concert Series. The Revivalists also last year created Rev Causes, a fund supporting charities and philanthropic initiatives, including recently raising money for Hurricane Laura relief. 2 Tank and the Bangas 3 Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews

BEST PLACE TO GET MARRIED 1 City Park

(504-482-4888; neworleanscitypark.com) New Orleans City Park, one of the country’s largest urban parks, is home to a range of picturesque, romantic spots to tie the knot — whether it’s in the seemingly enchanted Botanical Garden, underneath one of its hundreds of centuries-old oak trees or within one of its numerous pavilions. The park in recent years has also developed a number of new attractions to further entertain wedding guests or pose for Instagram-worthy photos, including a major expansion of the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden and the new Louisiana Children’s Museum. 2 St. Louis Cathedral (615 Pere Antoine Alley, 504-525-9583; stlouiscathedral.org) 3 Holy Name of Jesus Church (6367 St. Charles Ave., 504-865-7430; hnjchurch.org) P H O T O B Y S A R A H R AV I T S

BEST VIRTUAL CONCERT OR EVENT DURING COVID-19 1 Festing in Place

(WWOZ 90.7 FM) If you took an afternoon walk through your neighborhood in late April, chances were good you caught the sounds of Jazz Fests past blaring from of a front porch or out of the backyard. WWOZ 90.7 FM (which won best radio station on page 69) helped fill in the silence left by the cancelled 2020 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival with “Jazz Festing in Place,” a broadcast of dozens of past Jazz Fest performances over the eight days the 51st festival was originally scheduled. The airwaves were filled with Allen Toussaint, Dr. John, the Neville Brothers, Little Queenie, Alvin Batiste, Herbie Hancock, John Mooney, Bruce Springsteen, John Boutte and Ella Fitzgerald with Stevie Wonder as well as daily second lines. The program was a success as more than 2.3 million people tuned in and nearly 1,000 people submitted photos of their Jazz Festing in Place — and gave an electric boost to New Orleans’ morale. ‘OZ hosted another successful, seven-day Festing in Place edition in September. 2 NOLA Drive-in Summer Concert series at the UNO Lakefront Arena 3 Commander’s Palace Wine/ Cheese Tasting
