EDITOR'S LETTER

Happy summer! Even though school breaks are long gone for me, there is still something exciting about the slower days that this season brings. I’m looking forward to some downtime, a few quick getaways with family and friends, and putting my new bike to use around town! Last year I shared my ritual of creating a summer bucket list and had so many people reach out about creating their own lists filled with both silly and significant goals. Let me know what this summer has in store for you — I’m always looking for new additions to my list!

This issue of Adore was especially fun to work on. Our team loved learning more about Kelsey Anderson, this season’s winner of The Bachelor, and her favorite New Orleans spots and traditions. Our annual summer guide returns with ideas for staycations, day trips, and quick beach getaways along with home and fashion styling tips, fun events happening throughout the summer, and a spooky new book inspired by Louisiana’s bayous. This edition includes extra shopping content with our take on trends like baby colors and mushrooms, plus inspiration for the jetsetter. Father’s Day will be here before you know it, so be sure to reference our gift guide while shopping for dad. Even if a beach trip isn’t on your calendar, use our coastal-inspired shopping stories to bring the ocean to you.

Thank you for reading and supporting Adore! We’ll be back in your hands in late August, but until then keep up with us online and on social media for summer happenings, giveaways, and more!

FINAL THE

R os e

While falling in love and getting engaged is a rite of passage for many, it usually doesn’t unfold across millions of TV screens to then be shared across social media. For Kelsey Anderson, that’s exactly how her engagement to Joey Graziadei occurred on the 28th season of ABC’s The Bachelor Kelsey, who has called New Orleans home since graduating college, not only won Joey’s heart, but the hearts of New Orleanians who were cheering her on from afar. From her hometown date to jet-setting across the globe to wildly romantic spots, her adopted city loved watching every step of the way.

After joking with a friend about joining the show, Kelsey decided to move forward with her application. But as the interview process advanced, she was hesitant to proceed. “I was worried about the audience judging me and if I was ready to be open to someone and potentially have my whole world change,” she shares. “I had a lot of internal dialogues and decided that regardless of if I am there for a day, fall in love, get heartbroken or even engaged, that it will be an extraordinary life experience, so I decided to just go for it.”

With the help of her girlfriends, Kelsey packed her bags full of date-worthy outfits and dresses for the Rose Ceremonies (the point in each episode when the Bachelor determines who is going home that week) and headed to Los Angeles to begin filming last fall. As the season progressed, Joey, Kelsey, and the rest of the cast traveled to Malta, Spain, and Canada

and enjoyed dates against picturesque settings. Fast forward to Hometowns — the episode when Joey visits his final four choices and spends time with their families — and Kelsey was back in New Orleans, showing him around the Crescent City.

“I was so excited for Joey to meet my family and doing it in a place that I love so much made it even better. My favorite place we went to on my hometown date was City Park, because the weather was beautiful! Joey's favorite part was definitely Molly’s at the Market and their Irish coffee.”

Kelsey’s other standout moments from the show include getting swept away on a vespa in Spain and

drinking beer in a cozy bar in Jasper, Alberta, Canada, which was Kelsey’s favorite destination as it was where she realized she loved Joey. Eventually, Kelsey received Joey’s final rose in Tulum, Mexico (in a dramatic ending — you’ll have to watch the finale episode!) and has been enjoying life with her fiancé in New Orleans and beyond. “Everyone has been so kind and supportive,” she shares. “I’m so thankful for it all.”

While the couple has plans to move to New York this summer (a longtime dream of the bride), Kelsey is already looking forward to frequent visits home with Joey to see family and friends.

What word would you use to describe your time on the show? Growth

Botanicals & BEYOND

Summer brings warm weather, longer days, and flourishing gardens. Curated by Rachel Breunlin and Monique Verdin, Botanica: Gardens, Landscapes, and Plant Medicines in South Louisiana is the perfect exhibition to escape the heat while appreciating the season’s offerings. The two curators collaborated with herbalists, artists, gardeners, and scholars to explore the history of medicinal plants and their healing properties. Pulling from his experience as an interpretive park ranger, Bruce “Sunpie” Barnes also took part in the exhibit as an advisor, contributing a section on Louisiana swamps.

ORANGES FROM POITEAU & RISSO’S HISTOIRE NATURELLE DES ORANGERS . FRANCE, 1818.

Botanica is an immersive experience that will include photographs of plants, maps of different regions, oral histories, and more. As you peruse the installation, you’ll come across contributions from local botanical spaces, such as Longue Vue House and Gardens, Speakeasy Farm, and City Park. The discussion of how nature intertwines with various cultures — including African American, Louisiana-French, and Native — ties the exhibit together. Botanica will be on view at The Cabildo beginning Thursday, June 20. — Marigny Lanaux

REQUIRED Reading

Inspired by a newspaper article about a missing schoolteacher in south Louisiana, author Jennifer Moorhead taps into her Louisiana roots with her atmospheric debut thriller. Broken Bayou (out July 1) tells the story of a prominent child psychologist who takes a step back from her career following a disastrous television interview. Dr. Willa Watters retreats to Broken Bayou, a small town where she spent most of her childhood summers, hoping for a respite. Instead, she uncovers unsettling mementos of her past while going through the attic, and the town is shortly thrown into chaos as mysterious barrels containing human remains have appeared due to drought. Willa’s secretive past, which might be tied to the murders, is also beginning to surface. — Michaela Bechler

FEED YOUR Soul

Enjoy global flavors at the third annual Afro Freedom Afro Feast, a culinary experience celebrating Juneteenth. The communal meal will be held Sunday, June 16 at Grow Dat Youth Farm, a youth development organization located in City Park that promotes leadership opportunities and battles food insecurity through growing fresh produce. Founded by Chef Serigne Mbaye of Dakar NOLA, the event offers flavorful dishes from various cultures and the opportunity to mingle amongst contributing renowned chefs. “You’re going to experience all the hospitality New Orleans has to offer, from Caribbean influence to West African influence to Haitian influence to East Africa,” shares Chef Serigne. “You’re going to get a bite of the world.”

Other participating chefs include: Chef Charly Pierre of Fritai, Chef Prince Lobo of Addis NOLA, Chef Nina Compton of Compère Lapin and BABs, Chef Martha Wiggins of Café Reconcile, Chef Shonda Cross of Chef Shonda’s Fine Dining ToGo, and Pastry Chef Kaitlin Guerin of Lagniappe Bakehouse. — M.L.

BEAT THE Heat

With the temperatures rising, it can be a challenge to dress fashionable yet functional. With a few tips from local style icon Tracee Dugas, it’ll be easy to sail through the season in style! Tracee wears many glamorous hats, serving as the Founder and Creative Director of New Orleans Fashion Week, a Fashion Correspondent for FOX 8, and the Fashion Stylist and Programs Director for Dress for Success New Orleans.

When putting together a summer look, keep the materials of your clothes in mind. A common theme throughout Tracee’s seasonal wardrobe is breathable fabrics, such as cotton blends and lightweight jersey knits. She also utilizes light colors and flowy dresses, with white pieces being a go-to for a fresh fashion statement. “You may see me in a white swing dress or white palazzo pants, or white jeans paired with a chiffon, cold-shoulder top with a pop of color.”

According to Tracee, the most important thing to remember is that sometimes, less is more. “K.I.S.S. - Keep It Simple Sweetie. There’s no need to overdo, that includes hair and makeup.” With that, summer is also a time to have fun and to experiment with your personal style. “Don’t be cookie-cutter with your style. March to the beat of your own drum by adding flair and finesse to your look!” — M.L.

Cherry BOMB

While styling a room, the perfect finishing piece is often something surprising but oh-so-perfect at the same time. The “Unexpected Red Theory,” which set social media ablaze earlier this year, claims that adding a pop of red (in an unexpected way, of course) will instantly improve and add cohesion to any room.

Nomita Joshi-Gupta, interior designer and owner of SPRUCE, did just that via paint color in her client’s vintage kitchen. “The pop of red reminds us of soda pops and cherry bombs!” The designers of Logan Killen Interiors & Design Studio also enjoy using red, calling it an incredibly versatile color. “We use muted forms of it in almost all of our projects to bring warmth and balance, but occasionally use of a really strong crisp red to add a cool confident energy to a room. This works particularly well when used in a mostly neutral room as shown with this special vintage piece from Sunday Shop.”

Change up your existing space this summer through small furniture pieces like bar stools or accessories like lamps. — M.B.

DAY TRIPS

Avoid the summer slump by getting out of town and exploring a new place for a day! When traveling from New Orleans, these three cities can be reached in three hours or less. — M.L.

NATCHEZ | MISSISSIPPI

Start your Saturday morning by browsing the Downtown Natchez Farmers Market from 8:30 a.m. until 12 p.m. The market takes place at “The Bluff,” an area with a gorgeous vantage point of the Mississippi River. Offerings include farm-raised eggs, locally harvested honey, and freshly grown fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

Stop by the town’s newest restaurant Frankie’s on Main for salads and small bites featuring seasonal ingredients. An old bank building has been completely transformed into this Southern restaurant that’s equipped with high ceilings, a 22-foot-long bar, and indooroutdoor seating.

For food and wine lovers, don’t miss the Natchez Food and Wine Festival on Friday, July 26-Saturday, July 27. The weekend is comprised of ten events with upscale bites, cookbook signings, wine tastings, cooking demos, and more! Tickets can be purchased for individual events or opt to bundle for multiple experiences.

BATON ROUGE | LOUISIANA

On a beautiful day, swing by Beauvoir Park , a live music venue found in mid-city with weekly shows. Bring blankets and chairs to lounge on the lawn while listening to guest artists. Depending on the time of year, the event space typically hosts vendors that serve up Asian street food, barbecue, or crawfish.

Kayaking, paddleboarding, and canoeing on University Lake are all enjoyable weather-permitting activities! The peaceful area borders LSU’s campus and is surrounded by an active jogging trail. Bring your own equipment or rent what you need from the nearby recreation center.

For provisions, wander under the Perkins Road Overpass where you’ll find everything from a casual pizza eatery to a quaint ice cream shop. Stay for a late afternoon happy hour at the martini and dive bars.

THE NORTHSHORE | LOUISIANA

Five waterfront towns are scattered amongst The Northshore, meaning you’re never more than 15 minutes away from a source of water. Take advantage of the scenic lakes and rivers by setting sail with Delaune Sailing Charters in Mandeville. Private yacht voyages are available during the day and before sunset. For a more involved excursion, inquire about sailing lessons!

Venture out into wooded areas by biking, hiking, rollerblading, or even horseback riding along the Tammany Trace. This nature-filled path stretches 31 miles, passing through Covington, Abita Springs, Mandeville, Lacombe, and Slidell. With various entry points, you can create your own journey and explore any time before it gets dark.

After working up an appetite, dine at The Gloriette, a French-inspired restaurant inside the Southern Hotel in Covington. Weekend deals include Saturday and Sunday brunch along with “French Fridays,” an all-day special on French bistro-style dishes and select beverages. VISITTHENORTHSHORE.COM

ROOM WITH AView

HOTEL HENRIETTA — the first hotel to be built from the ground up on St. Charles Avenue in 30 years — has opened as an extension of Columns hotel, located just two blocks away. The five-story, 34,000-square-foot boutique hotel from locally based hospitality and real estate development companies, Sandstone and Formwork, features 40 guest rooms.

“We found ourselves needing more rooms at Columns in order to facilitate the large event bookings we receive throughout the year,” says Jayson Seidman, founder of Sandstone Development. “As a natural next step, adding more rooms nearby felt like a smart move. Sandstone and Formwork co-developed the hotel from initial conception through its ground-up construction [which began in February 2023 and concluded in March 2024]. Sandstone is also the operator of the hotel.”

The contemporary yet timeless architecture and interior design, led by local firm Farouki Farouki, flaunts stepped arched openings and oversized balconies; a reception area

with a large marble check-in island, cafe counter, and cocktail bar; and wall coverings by French designer Pierre Frey. “I’d describe the architecture and interior design as an intentional blend of timeless where classical intersects with mid-century. We appreciate [Farouki Farouki’s] background and general appreciation for mid-century modern design. Given this was a ground-up project, the architecture and interiors needed to be perfectly in balance.”

Layouts for guest rooms include kings, double queens, and spacious connecting suites. “The color palette was inspired by the interior design direction I took for Columns, where setting plaster, tallow, and pitch black were at the forefront,” Jayson says. “The various mosaic tile patterns found in the original Thomas Sully fireplaces were a major point of inspiration.”

Guest rooms have custom millwork, velvet headboards, banquettes, and bathrooms with oversized showers, Waterworks fixtures, and marble tile and vanities. A selection of rooms include dishwashers, Smeg refrigerators, and microwaves, and the hotel offers guests access to complimentary washers and dryers. Hotel Henrietta is further brought to life with the use of potted palm trees, vintage and commissioned art from local and global

artists handpicked by Jayson, and an eclectic mix of furniture. Guests also can enjoy a colonnaded front porch and terrace with outdoor seating and fire pits.

Hotel Henrietta also has collaborated with local favorite Flour Moon Bagels, serving bagels, schmears, and bagel tartines daily in the lobby lounge from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Starting at 3 p.m., the hotel offers a selection of seasonal shared plates, snacks, and cocktails.

As an extension of Columns (originally built in 1883 by Thomas Sully as a private residence for Simon Hernsheim), Hotel Henrietta borrows its name from Simon’s sister. Together with Sandstone’s new raw bar in the French Quarter, dubbed Fives (after the old-fashioned slang for a fivepack of cigars), Columns and Hotel Henrietta offer food and beverage discounts across all three properties.

Queen Anne UPTOWN

When Katharine and David Rhudy decided to move from New Canaan, Connecticut, to New Orleans, it was to be closer to their adult children. They found the perfect 1880s cruciform home on State Street in January 2021, which originally sat on St. Charles Avenue and was owned by Walter Flowers, the Mayor of New Orleans from 1896-1900. It was later relocated to face State Street, where Victorian porches were added, and it became known as The Grand Dame of State Street. However, the residence was later divided into four multifamily units and suffered years of disrepair. The Rhudys decided to embark on a whole-home renovation that was completed in January 2023.

Katharine, an interior decorator and designer with Reed & Acanthus Interior Design, approached the process as she does all her projects. First, she identified her family’s wants, needs, and vision for the home. She then worked with local architect Sean Fisher and an in-house construction crew to devise a pre-construction building plan. She simultaneously developed an interior design scheme for every room.

The original goal was to remodel the fourplex into one home, but as empty nesters, they decided to keep the two bedroom,

2,000-square-foot upstairs apartment for visiting friends and family. The “to the studs” renovation included removing haphazard additions and a rotting facade and foundation, while updating mechanicals and unveiling hidden 14-foot ceilings and grand rooms.

“We tried to restore the symmetry and modernize this once great historic home to its former grandeur, while staying true to its historic roots,” Katharine says. “Having lived almost 30 years in Connecticut, where winter months are long and dark, the inspiration was to bring the outside in. [We did so] by letting the abundant Louisiana light stream in through the home with the addition of seven massive French doors in the family room/kitchen area.”

One-floor living was also important to Katharine and David, as was a gourmet kitchen with an open floor plan and an outdoor entertainment area. They also added a home office and lap pool. For the interior design, Katharine turned to nature-inspired fabrics, wallpaper, and art (featuring birds, flowers, and fauna) in greens, blues, grays, and creams.

“I was an antiques dealer prior to my current career as an interior decorator, and our previous home was an 1830s farmhouse stuffed to the gills with furniture, decorative objects, and vibrant colors,” Katharine says. "For this home, I took a more minimalist, monochromatic approach, incorporating natural elements in an attempt to blur the lines between outside and inside living.”

Due to the nature of the design, pattern, texture, and varied materials play a large role. For example, patterned wallpaper makes the otherwise cavernous house feel warm and welcoming. “The wallpaper mural in the entrance hall is a favorite and was a design challenge due to the 14-foot ceilings,” Katharine says. “Mural Source was able to customize the size to accommodate the high ceilings. This tropical landscape with dense jungle foliage in warm gray tones is romantic without being overwhelming.”

Other design choices of note include custommade carpets in the living room, hall, and family room from Stark Carpet and the two large Baker sofas in the family room. For the family room kitchen, Katharine special ordered accent chairs, end tables, and counter stools from Alfonso Marina. She also relied on her vast collection of antiques, which are thoughtfully placed throughout.

Marisa & Jeff 2.16.24

Sparks flew when Marisa Naccari and Jeffery Anderson first met at an LSU semiformal held at the Superdome where Jeffery was attending as Marisa's friend’s platonic date. The New Orleans natives who graduated from high school just one year apart (Mount Carmel Academy and Brother Martin, respectively) dated throughout their time at LSU and moved back home, where Jeffery enrolled as a medical student.

Marisa’s job immersed her in the bridal world. As the marketing manager of The Bridal Boutique by MaeMe, she modeled hundreds of gowns. Finding her dream wedding dress proved to be the impetus for her engagement. “While at a bridal market, owner Melissa Estess FaceTimed us. I saw the dress in the background, and I instantly fell in

love,” Marisa said. “Jeffery said the day I saw that dress and I wouldn't stop talking about it, he knew I was ready to get engaged.”

Just shy of their seventh anniversary, Jeffery surprised Marisa on the steps of her dream wedding venue, the New Orleans Museum of Art, after securing “last minute” tickets to a fundraiser. The couple celebrated their wedding on those same steps with a black-tie optional event following a ceremony at Holy Rosary. The two wanted the day to be unique and deeply personal. Marisa customized her Martina Liana ivory silk zibeline two-piece silhouette gown by embroidering "sunshine" diagonally on the back bodice, a nod to Jeffrey’s affectionate "goodnight, sunshine” texts.

Marisa’s earrings belonged to her grandmother, and she gave her mom a ring to match the earrings on her wedding day.

Other nods to their love story included special details on Marisa’s reception look. To match a playful pink veil with ruffled trim, Marisa changed into custom Nike sneakers painted with the word “sunshine,” the number seven to represent their seven years together, their initials, wedding monogram, and dating anniversary.

A striking and memorable addition to the museum’s décor, Marisa displayed her sisters', mother’s, and mother in-law's wedding gowns on mannequins on the top of the museum’s interior steps as a focal point. “These gowns represent the love stories that helped to bring Jeff and I to our wedding day and are models for the love story that we hope to build.”

Guests dined on prime rib, scalloped potatoes, coconut shrimp, seafood gumbo, and charcuterie by Pigéon Caterers and danced to music by The Mixed Nuts — complete with a crowd-surfing bride and groom.

Event planner Amanda Price and Marisa’s mother kept the champagne skirt and mirror man performers as a surprise to the couple.

Each tier on the cake from La Louisiane Bakery was a different flavor, including the couple’s favorite: funfetti.

Shop Dog DUKE

When visiting Ballin’s, shoppers can expect to find an array of stylish pieces ranging from casual everyday separates to cocktail attire to evening gowns fit for a Mardi Gras ball. Founded by Wendy LeGardeur in 1981, Ballin’s has two locations in New Orleans (Dante Street and Magazine Street) as well as outposts in Covington, Baton Rouge, Lafayette, and Mobile, Alabama. Each location carries the boutique’s private labels and frequently hosts exciting trunk shows. Besides the gorgeous clothes, accessories, and gifts, Wendy’s favorite part about Ballin’s is seeing all the happy customers. She especially adores the loving interactions between visitors and Duke, her affectionate and fluffy Goldendoodle.

Duke is the shop’s enthusiastic and friendly four-legged employee. He shows up to work each day eager to please his boss (Wendy) and his coworkers. His favorite part of the job is greeting customers in his seasonal neckwear and giving them his paw. Duke spends time hanging out

amongst the clothes at both New Orleans locations, but when he is at Dante Street, you might catch him taking a nap behind the counter when the store gets busy. He also loves to accompany Wendy on road trips to check out the other Ballin’s locations.

When Duke is off the clock, he’s still the same sweet, devoted, and protective pooch that customers know and love.

“After a long day at the store, he sleeps while dreaming about treats,” Wendy shares. He loves starting his day with breakfast at Royal Blend and getting groomed at his “hairdresser.” Bay St. Louis is one of his go-to vacation spots, and he prefers to dine at The Sycamore House which is his absolute favorite restaurant.

And while Duke is technically still a puppy, Wendy calls him an “old soul.”

The next time you’re in the market for unique, fashionforward clothing and quality time with a Goldendoodle, Wendy and Duke look forward to your visit. “There’s something for everyone!”

Age: Almost 2

Breed: Goldendoodle

Favorite food: Treats!

Favorite toy: A plastic ball that lights up when thrown in the air

Favorite activities: Playing fetch with Wendy and chasing his two dog cousins around the yard

Favorite part of Ballin’s: The evening gown room. “He has very discerning taste.”
