Aftereightyearsofhavingformer Gov.JohnBelEdwardsstandingintheir way,anti-queertheocratsinthelegislaturetookfulladvantageofhavingone oftheirownintheGovernor’sMansion thisyear

Bywidemargins,bothlegislative chambersapprovedabillforcingtrans kidstousetheirdeadnamesand pronounsinschoolunlesstheyget writtenpermissionfromtheirparents, passedLouisiana’sversionofa“Don’t SayGay”billprohibitingteachers andstudentsfromdiscussing“sexual orientation”and“genderidentity”and adoptedaregressive“bathroombill” targetingtranskidsandadults

Noneofthosebillsfacedsignificant oppositionfromlawmakers.Most passedwithlittlediscussionand few,ifany,amendments despite pushbackfromthepublicandthe medicalcommunity.

Thebathroombillanddeadname measuredemonstratedaparticularly troublinghostilitytowardstransgender kids,somethingthat’sbeenbuildingin theCapitoloverthelastseveralyears. Forcingtransyouthtousebirthnames theynolongerwanttogobyhasbeen showntoincreasetheriskofself-harm inapopulationthatalreadyhasadisproportionatelyhighsuiciderate.

Thebathroombill,meanwhile,aims tosolveanon-existentproblem namelytranspeoplelurkinginstalls acrossthecountry.Inreality,itlikely willcreateaproblembyputtingtrans

Americanserviceman stationedinKorea.After hismotherLenorawas born,SunChongcame toAmerica,andMorrow wasraisedbyhisgrandmotherandmother, twostrongwomenwho hesaystaughthimthe meaningofhardwork andhospitality.

“Goodfoodisn’t enoughtobeasuccess,” Morrowsays.“Wecreate experiences.It’strulya gumboofvibes,hospitalityandgreatfood.I builtmynameandbrands fromhospitality,which I’velearnedfrommy mother.Withthisplace, wewantyoutofeellike youneverwanttoleave.”

“I’msurewehavethebusiest MondayinLouisiana,”hesays.
