EDITOR'S LET TER You might not know this, but I have two jobs: editor and professional wedding guest. All jokes aside, I’ve been to my fair share of celebrations across the country and beyond. While each has been unique, beautiful, and joy-filled, there is something extra special about a New Orleans wedding. The two recent nuptials that we featured in this edition included local entertainment, iconic food, and other surprises for guests to enjoy against the city’s beautiful backdrop. In this issue, you’ll find fun extras to enhance the big day, “Something Blue” home items, gifts that the wedding party actually want, outfits for the entire engagement season (for mothers of the bride and groom, too!), and

excellent venues across the city to consider while planning an engagement party, rehearsal dinner, shower, and of course, the big event. We hope you’ll share this issue with anyone you know that is recently engaged or in the planning process. Believe it or not, Easter will be here in about a month. Hop to it with gifts and springtime décor from some of our favorite local shops! And in our first Shop Dog of 2024, you’ll meet Tucker. You can find him and your new favorite coffee at Current Crop Roasting Shop on Magazine Street. Thanks for reading! — MICHAEL A BECHLER

A few snaps from recent wedding celebrations with my husband and friends in Newport Beach and Atlanta. Weddings are some of the best reunions!

leveland Spears, III and Rubi L. Brown knew each other socially for a few years and would run into each other from time to time. After much thought and consideration, Cleveland made his interest known in 2018. While Rubi wasn’t immediately interested, something changed, and their first date happened in the late summer of 2020. One date led to another and before they knew it, it had been two years. Cleveland popped the question on New Year’s Eve with a beautiful ring from Lee Michaels, and the couple began to dream up their New Orleans nuptials.

Cleveland's son, Cleveland, IV, was the “star of the wedding party” and served as a junior groomsman and ring bearer.

Despite being very busy individuals — Rubi is an attorney with Christovich & Kearney, while Cleveland is an entrepreneur and the President and CEO of Spears Group — they dove right into planning with Anissa Coleman of Elegance by ACE. “New Orleans is such a special place for us,” they

shared. “We grew up here, work here, and met here. We knew a wedding in this city would be the greatest representation of who we are.” Throughout the process, the two reminded themselves that they wanted their wedding to be filled with love, authenticity, and fun. The ceremony and reception took place at the Contemporary Arts Center. Rubi was walked down the aisle by her mother as her father had passed away a week after their engagement. “When asked during the ceremony, who would give Rubi away, both her mother and sister responded. It was an emotional moment for Rubi as she always dreamed of having her father walk her down the aisle for her wedding but also very grateful to have her mother stand beautiful and strong in his absence.” Rubi looked radiant in a two-toned trumpet layered gown by Ines di Santo. “I wanted my look to be a moment,” she says. “I wanted Cleveland to cry when he saw me and wanted the dress to be memorable.” She completed the look with Christian Louboutin heels, diamond earrings she borrowed from her mother, and her father’s wedding band. Later in the evening, Rubi changed into a Portia and Scarlett gown, and Cleveland swapped his white jacket for a custom vest and Jordan 1’s. The reception also flipped into a Vegas-style nightclub scene with upbeat party music, glow in the dark flashers, Ace of Spades champagne bottles, signage, and more.

in a custom tuxedo by Well Groomed Man and Salvatore Ferragamo shoes. While the ceremony featured bright white florals, the reception was filled with an abundance of jewel tone flowers with lush greenery by Distinctive Event Designs. Guests were entertained by the Brass-a-Holics, Major, and DJ Raj Smoove, and they loved when New Orleans artist S-Eighty took the stage to perform his hit song “Halfway.” New Orleans flavors were provided by Messina’s Catering and Drago’s Seafood, and Royal Cakery baked the white buttercream dessert. The evening concluded with a second line around the Warehouse District led by the Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club Tramps and Kinfolk Brass Band.

Cleveland surprised Rubi by having R&B artist Major sing their first dance song, “Why I Love You.” The couple then danced with their mothers to Major’s song “A Mother’s Love.” 14

adie Higginson and Wendy Ginsberg first met in London, UK, where Wendy had been living and working for four years while Cadie was studying for her master’s degree at Oxford. Cadie, now an officer in the Marine Corps, returned back to the US for further training, and Wendy decided to move back to be with her a few months later. After becoming engaged while living in Pensacola, they started to plan their wedding with the help of their mothers and Maria Maginnis of InNOLA Events & Design when the day got closer. “Our mothers were our heroes on this, especially Wendy’s mom,” the couple shared. “They made everything so much easier and really were set on making sure we were happy and that the wedding felt authentic to us.” The joyful wedding weekend kicked off with a festive rehearsal dinner and welcome party at Rosy’s Jazz Hall with music

by John Cleary and the Absolute Monster Gentlemen. The next day, Cadie and Wendy gathered with guests in Audubon Park for a picnic of Parkway po-boys and Hansen’s snoballs before heading over to Cadie’s childhood home to get ready for the main event. Each donned simple v-neck gowns — Cadie’s was from Yvonne LaFleur and Wendy’s was from The Bridal Loft in Pensacola — and no other jewelry besides their rings. The ceremony took place on Capulet’s rooftop and included readings from their brothers; remarks and a collection of poetry from Cadie’s father; and custom vows under the chuppah made of birch bark. “We each wrote our own vows and carefully kept them hidden from each other, only to find out as we read them to each other that they ended up being almost exactly the same.” Immediately following the ceremony, the brides walked through a military sword arch and straight into

a second line with their guests right at sunset, a special memory for the two of them. The reception also took place at Capulet, which is both veteran and LGBTQ+ owned. After the first dance, they changed into more comfortable clothes and enjoyed the rest of the evening with their guests. Chef Jack DaVia and My House Events delivered an array of bites including an oyster cart, a popsicle cart, a mini dessert station of New Orleans staples, french fries, Pizza Delicious, and beignets as guests left the wedding. Bittersweet Confections kept things traditional with a classic 4-tiered almond cake. After an amazing evening, the group reconvened the next day to recap the weekend over a courtyard brunch at the NOPSI.

Maria Maginnis, Kim Starr Wise, and Luminous Events all worked together to create the elegant reception. True Value Rental and Lovegood Rentals helped complete the scene.

NEW

Personal Touches for Your Wedding Day BY M I S T Y M I L I OTO

W

YaySoiree

hen it comes to your big day, even the smallest details can create lasting memories. And while all weddings have similar elements, it’s that little bit of lagniappe — everything from glitter to tambourines — that can help create an event that’s truly your own.

EN JU LEY SI GLER | COU RTESY O F EVER SO CANDID

Ever So Candid

An emerging trend in the industry is wedding content creation, and New Orleans is lucky to have Ever So Candid, started by Enjuley Sigler, leading the charge. “It was through planning my own wedding that I got the inspiration to start this adventure,” she says. “Wedding content creation is about recording all the raw, candid, and meaningful moments with an iPhone and delivering 500 to 900-plus photos and videos within 24 hours after the wedding. You can consider me as your personal fan girl who is designated to capture every bit of the wedding day. Then the bridesmaids, family, and friends can be present and celebrate with the newlyweds.”

For a truly special touch, consider a custom hand-painted tambourine (with NOLA street tiles, custom wedding logos, and more) from YaySoiree. Owner Kristin Petry started the company in 2021 in response to the pandemic. “One of my best friends had to replan her wedding, and the week of her replanned wedding, she had to cut her list down to the bare bones,” she says. “Thinking of anything I could do to make it special, I painted two custom tambourines for she and her husband, and the idea was born.” Since starting YaySoiree, Kristin has created more than 30 custom tambourines. “A New Orleans wedding is notoriously jovial and inclusive. Your tambourine brings you front and center and ready to lead the second line.” YAYSOIREE.COM

In 2023, Enjuley captured 14 weddings and one business event, and she has more than 20 weddings already booked for 2024. “My clients have loved it and said it adds a personal touch to their day,” she says. “They will have conversations, interactions, laughs, cries, and happy moments amongst themselves, their guests, and family. They deserve to have all of their moments documented so they can remember it all through the years. We did it for our wedding, and it truly embraces the candid moments we had.” Film photos and videography (courtesy of Enjuley’s husband Jonathan Sigler) are also available. EVERSOCANDID.COM

Mignon Faget

Cake pulls are a charming New Orleans tradition and a fun addition to any wedding. Pulls are inserted into the wedding cake, and the bride gathers her bridesmaids or attending single women to pull a ribbon thereby exposing a charm that signifies her future. A gorgeous set of nine handcrafted pulls from Mignon Faget includes charms that signify everything from luck to stability to red hot romance. MIGNONFAGET.COM 28

Gem Printing Co.

Gem Printing Co. offers a variety of items that are necessary for any second line, including umbrellas for the bride and groom, as well as personalized handkerchiefs for wedding guests. Good choices include the feathered umbrellas (available in white, ivory, and black) or the lace umbrellas (available in white and black). While the umbrellas are sold as is, some couples choose to add rhinestone fleur-de-lis stickers or other embellishments. Meanwhile, the second-line handkerchiefs are available in a variety of colors and can be personalized with stock designs or custom art. GEMPRINTING.COM

Lucky Dogs

Pixie Dust Biodegradable Glitter

Add a little sparkle to wedding events with a glitter bar from Pixie Dust Biodegradable Glitter. The Sparkle Stations are perfect for bachelorette parties, showers, and receptions. “As you approach the Sparkle Station, you'll be greeted by a dazzling array of colorful glitter,” founder Samantha Bongiovanni says. “Skilled glitter artists add a touch of magic to the faces of party guests. We take special requests for glitter colors, artist attire, and theme at no extra charge. No two events are alike, so we adapt and design our aesthetic to fit your vision and style.”

For a fun late-night addition for wedding receptions, consider hiring a Lucky Dog cart. Kirk Talbot, co-owner of the company, says that Lucky Dogs are a great option because they are perfect for grazing. Since they don’t require a knife and fork, they can be eaten while standing and socializing or taken to go. The steamed hot dogs and buns pair perfectly with toppings like ketchup, mustard, chili, and diced onions. Plus, the iconic carts are a quintessential New Orleans touch. Just think of the cute photos!

Pixie Dust was started when Samantha struggled to find biodegradable glitter outside of Europe. “Regular glitter is considered a microplastic and is harmful to our aquatic ecosystems and our bodies (note the warning labels on other cosmetic glitter),” she says. “Biodegradable glitter is made from plant cellulose rather than plastic and will decompose in wastewater and soil.” Pixie Dust now offers a line of more than 35 single colors in various sizes from very fine to super chunky.

The Parlor at the Pontchartrain

Tucked behind the Pontchartrain Hotel on St. Charles Avenue, wedding guests at The Parlor indulge on custom menus created by the chef of the hotel’s Jack Rose restaurant and sip on signature cocktails curated by the awardwinning team at Hot Tin, the hotel’s bar. A true culinary experience, chefs create custom menus for each occasion, rather than couples picking items from a set menu. A stylish black-andwhite striped awning welcomes guests to this “unassuming garage” industrial space with rollup doors, brick walls, muted concrete floors, and French toile wallpaper illuminated by a line of crystal chandeliers suspended from the vaulted ceiling. Ogden Museum of Southern Art

Offering grand Southern charm at its finest, The Greenwood in Covington, a sister property of the Southern Hotel, features 400-year-old oak trees, azaleas, and lush landscaping on four sprawling acres. An original Benedictine Convent from the 1890s, the bell tower at The Greenwood remains unchanged on the exterior, along with the Italian marble throughout the interior. The raised French Quarter-style dining terrace overlooks the original limestone grotto. The in-house wedding planner helps create the event of couple’s dreams throughout the property’s distinct and picturesque spaces. The Southern Hotel, a ten-minute drive away, offers guest room blocks for a true destination weekend.

No additional décor is necessary when you have your wedding at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art! A one-of-a-kind experience for any art lover, this Warehouse District museum has two distinct event rental areas: the historic Patrick F. Taylor Library has capacity for 300 and The Stephen Goldring Hall, with capacity for 700. A rooftop terrace, with exquisite views of the city skyline, can be rented separately for a cocktail party, welcome reception, or a bridal shower. The museum also offers a comprehensive bar package and allows outside catering.

f having a cup of coffee is one of your daily rituals, take it to the next level with Current Crop Roasting Shop. The java retail store will help coffee drinkers become bonafide connoisseurs with its high-quality blends from all over the world. More specifically, the shop’s everevolving selection includes 78 different coffee beans from 32 countries! This one-year-old storefront is not your typical café. “We are designed as a DIY coffee hub. We have coffee specialists who are trained to guide and educate customers on the benefits of home roasting,” shares owner John Puckett. “Our store offers a variety of educational opportunities including workshops, cupping classes, private parties, and even custom experiences. We are committed to growing the home-roasting community in New Orleans. The best cup of coffee comes from freshly roasted beans, and we have the team to teach you and the products and equipment you need.” The perks of visiting Current Crop Roasting Shop are the interactive opportunities, and this is a main motivation for Tucker, John’s loyal and easy-going Golden Retriever. “Despite his place of employment, Tucker isn’t much of a coffee drinker…he’s in it more for the social aspect, so he prefers hanging out in the shop all day mingling with the customers. Some days, he’s the number one sales rep!” As a big people-pleaser, Tucker takes his role at the shop very seriously. He always helps where he’s needed, whether that’s showing customers the beans from each region, greeting guests who have booked an educational class, or flashing his charming smile to encourage an upsell. Although he prefers to man his station at the shop, Tucker also enjoys setting aside time to explore Magazine Street on his breaks.
