IN2018,“MYFUTUREISMYPAST”WAS ADIFFERENTKINDOFALBUMforWalter

“Wolfman”Washington.TheNew Orleanssingerandguitarist,whodied in2022,wasknownforapowerhouse mixoffunk,blues,soulandrhythmand blueswhenbackedbyhislong-standing bandTheRoadmasters,but“MyFuture IsMyPast,”incontrast,wasstripped downandintimate.Itwasatender albumforthedeepearlymorninghours afterthegighadwrapped.

ReleasedbyANTI-Records,the albumbroughtrenewedattention toWashingtonfromoutsideof NewOrleans,leadingtoatourwith TromboneShortyandthePreservation HallJazzBandandawards.

It“justchangedWalter’strajectory completely,”saysWashington’swife MichelleBusheyoveralatebreakfast atBetsy’sPancakeHouse,oneof Washington’sfavoriteMid-Cityspots.

“Actually,Ihearditplayedon [WWOZ]duringoneofthejazzshows, oneofthesongsonthealbum,andI calledtheDJ,Isaid,‘Ireallyappreciateyou’rerecognizingWalter’smusic doesn’tfitintoafunkboxoranR&B boxorabluesbox,’”Busheyadds. “Itreallywastrans-genrekindof musicinhim.”

Beforehediedjustdaysafterhis 79thbirthdayinDecember2022, Washingtonhadfinishedhisworkon thefollow-upto“MyFutureIsMyPast.”

Thatalbum,“FeelSoAtHome,”isbeing releasedthismonthasavinylexclusive throughtheTipitina’sRecordClub ItwillbewidelyavailableonCDand streamingplatformsinNovember. Therealsoaretwotributeconcerts inthecomingweeks.TheRoadmasters firstplayatributeandrecordrelease celebrationat9p.m.Wednesday,Oct. 11,atd.b.a.withJohn“Papa”Gros, MemShannon,LesGetrixandmore. CLASSES,forabout thefirstdecadeofits existenceinthe1880s and‘90s.First,here’s alittlehistoryofthe universityitself.

Tulanehasitsrootsintwoinstitutions:theMedicalCollegeofLouisiana andtheUniversityofLouisiana, establishedin1834andlocatedin downtownNewOrleansnearthesite oftoday’sRooseveltHotel.

In1884,theLouisianaLegislature passedabilltransferringcontrolofthe UniversityofLouisianatotheTulane EducationalFund.Thefundwascreatedwiththeproceedsfromextensive realestatedonationsfromphilanthropistPaulTulane,forwhomthenew universitywasnamed.Itwouldmove fromdowntowntoitsiconiclocation onSt.CharlesAvenuein1894.

Tulane’shighschooldatesfrom 1884.Therewere210students enrolledbythefollowingyear.An advertisementinTheDailyPicayune explainedthatthehighschoolwas locatedatBaronneandCommon streets,neartheoriginalsiteof theuniversity

Ittrainedstudentsfromtheageof 12andpreparedthem“thoroughly foradmissiontothejuniorclassesof

WE’VEALLBEENTHERE BEFORE.Youmeetsomeoneand hititoff.Theytellyouhowmuch youhaveincommon,abouthow youcouldbuildafuturetogether, abouthowimportantyouare tothem.

Andthen,whenyouneedthem themost,suddenly,it’scrickets. Yes,muchlikebeinginabad relationship,theLouisianaDemocraticPartyhasbeenghostingthe state’svoters.

Thepartymassivelyfailed torecruitcandidatestorunin racesbothbigandsmallthis electioncycle—tothepointof arguablycreatingananti-democraticsystem

Comethisfall,voters—whatevertheirpoliticalbeliefs—won’t evenhavethechoiceofvotingfor aDemocratinawhopping93of thestatewide/multi-parishraces thiselectioncycle.

Thatincludes22ofthe39state Senateracesand59ofthe105 stateHouseraces,givingRepublicansanautomaticmajorityin bothchambersoftheLouisiana Legislaturebeforevotershave thechancetocastasingleballot. AndRepublicanscouldgetveto-proofsupermajoritiesinboth chambers(again).

Evensomeofthetopofficesin thestate,likeinsurancecommis-

sionerandagriculturalcommissioner,willsoonbeheldbyRepublicanswhoranunopposed.

Thepartyalsohasstruggled tokeepthefewmembersthey alreadyhaveinthelegislature, withformerDemocraticstate Reps.MalindaWhite,JeremyLaCombeandFrancisThompsonall switchingtotheRepublicanParty inrecentyears.

“It’sgrossnegligenceand embarrassing,”saysstateRep. MandieLandry,aNewOrleans Democratwhooutoffrustrationbrieflyleftthestateparty tobecomeanindependent. “Republicansarekickingourass ineverything.”

Thenthere’sthedramaand internalfightingsurrounding LouisianaDemocraticPartyChair KatieBernhardtsince2020—the latestsymptomoftheparty’slatestagecollapse.

WhileDemocratsacrossthe DeepSouthfaceanuphillbattle, inLouisiana,whereathirdof residentsareBlack,thereisapath tovictory.Gov.JohnBelEdwards’ electionin2015andreelection in2019,ifnothingelse,show it’spossible.

Butforanyshotatbeing competitive,someDemocratssay thestatepartyneedstoberebuilt fromscratch

LouisianaStateUniversity professorandformerDemocratic politicalstafferBobMannputsit morebluntly:“Thatpartyneeds tobeblownup,deconstructed, burnedtotheground,andthen youstartoveragain.”

Louisianahaslongbeenaconservativestate,butevenafterthe partiesswappedideologiesby the’80s,voterswerestillelecting Democratstostatewideand

voterswonderingwherethestate DemocraticPartyhasgone

nationaloffices,thoughmanyof thosewerecentristorconservativeBlueDogDemocrats.

BillClintonwonthestateinboth 1992and1996,thoughGeorge H.W.Bushwonbydoubledigit marginsin1988andsodidhis sonin2000.Evenafterthat,as recentlyas2004,Louisianahad aDemocraticgovernor(Kathleen Blanco)andDemocratscontrolled bothofthestate’sUnitedStates Senateseats(MaryLandrieuand JohnBreaux).

Sure,thereweresometight winsandmanylosses,butDemocratsstoodafightingchance.

Inthosedays,voterswere morewillingto“splittickets”and voteforRepublicansnationally, accordingtoMann.

Mann,whoworkedforDemocratsofthatera,includingBlanco andBreaux,saysvoterssawa differencebetweenaLouisiana DemocratandaD.C.Democrat, butthatthedistinctionhasgone awayasthestate’spoliticshave becomemore“nationalized.”

“WhenIworkedforJohn Breaux,alotofpeoplewouldsay, ‘I’maJohnBreauxDemocrat.I’m notaTedKennedyDemocrat.I’m notaNancyPelosiDemocrat.’ Youdon’thearthatmuchanymore,”hesays

AcrosstheSouthinthelate’90s and2000s,DemocratswerelosingwhitevoterstotheRepublican Partyindroves.Intheaftermath ofHurricaneKatrinaandthefederalleveefailuresin2005,many peopleinNewOrleans,thestate’s Democraticstronghold,were forcedtomoveeithertemporarily orpermanently.Morethan18 yearslater,thecitystillhasabout 85,000fewerpeoplethanitdid beforethestorm

“Thecatastrophethatwas Katrinashookupourpoliticsina waythatjustacceleratedsome ofthedemographicandpolitical changesthatwerealreadyhappeninginplaceslikeMississippi andAlabamaandGeorgiaand everywhereelseoutintheSouth,” Mannsays.

By2014,whenLandrieu—at thatpointtheonlyremaining whiteDemocratfromtheDeep SouthintheSenate—losther race,manysawitasendofanera Andoverthenextneardecade, Republicanswouldrunupthe score,electingsomeofthemost virulentlypartisanandconservativecandidatesinthecountry.

Hersuccessor,KatieBernhardt, toutedherfundraisingabilitiesand appealtotheparty’smoderate winginherrunforchair.Bernhardtsaysthepartywasina “toughspot”whenshetookover aschairbutsincethenthey’ve workedtoestablishDemocratic ParishExecutiveCommittees inmorethanadozenparishes whereonedidn’texistatallandto strengthenandgrowothers.

Bernhardt’scriticswithinthe partysaythusfarshe’sfailedto adequatelydotwofundamental jobsofthepartychair:recruiting candidatesandraisingmoney.

Forherpart,Bernhardtsays it’sbeenhardtofindDemocrats whohavethetimeandmoneyto runforofficeand,insomeareas, takeonwhatareunfavorable odds.Shecitessomedistrictsthat becamemoreconservativeafter statelawmakersredrewthemas anadditionalhurdle.

WhilemanyLouisianaresidents shareDemocraticvalues,she says,“ourlegislativemapswill nevershowthataslongasthe legislaturethemselvesisdrawingthem.”

Thepartyranaprogramcalled “ContestEveryRace”inwhich itsentoutthousandsoftext messagestoDemocratswhothey determinedmightbeinterestedin runningforoffice.Bernhardtsays theprogramreceivedmixedreviewsbutcanpointtoatleastone personitinspiredtorun:Angelena Brocato,whoischallengingan incumbentforaseatonSt.Mary ParishCouncil.

‘Personalpowergames’ UnderBernhardt’sleadership, muchoftheinfightinghas stemmedfromthestateparty gettinginvolvedinDemocratvs. Democratraces.Thatincludes MandieLandry’srunagainstfellow Rep.RoyceDuplessisforPeter-

son’sstateSenateseatin2022 Landrysaysshewas“legitimately shocked”whenthestateparty sentoutmailpiecespromoting Duplessis,whoultimatelywon therace.

Similarly,thoughthestate partyendorsedbothlongtime incumbentLambertBoissiere andchallengerDavanteLewisin theraceforaseatonthePublic ServiceCommission,Lewissays thepartyonlyactuallyhelped Boissiere.Boththepartyand Bossierereceivedsignificant donationsfromutilitycompanies Entergy,ClecoandCenterPoint Energy,accordingtoreportingby Desmog.Still,Lewispulledoffan upsetandwontheelection

LyndaWoolard,aDemocratic organizerwhoranagainstBernhardtforchair,seestheparty’s involvementintheseracesas “misspending”whatlittlemoney thepartydoeshave.Bernhardt defendsitasthepartysimply backingacandidateendorsed byaparishDemocraticcommitteeortakingasidetosupport the“strongestcandidate”in therunoff.

“Thatdoesn’tmeanthatevery Democratishappyaboutthat, butourobjectiveistopickthe strongestcandidateandsupport them,”Bernhardtsays.

Shesayssherespectspeople whothinkthepartyshouldstay outofDemocratvs.Democrat racesbutinsistsit’snotanew debatewithintheparty.

“Alotofthesedebatesareage old,butwearehearingthem becausethere’snowaplatformon socialmediatobeheard,”shesays.

Berhardtagaincameunderfire withinthepartyaftersheputout anadwithpoliticalactioncommit-

teeTeamLouisianainJanuaryin whichsheappearedtobeconsideringarunforgovernor

Init,sheencouragedvotersto electpeoplewith“alittlebitof firepower”andproceededtofirea gun.Sheintroducedherselfmultipletimesinthead,includingas“a localbusinessowner”butneveras aDemocrat—muchlessthehead ofthestateparty.

ThatadangeredmanyDemocratsinthestatewhobelievedit wasinappropriateforhertocontemplateherownrunwhenshe wassupposedtobemeetingwith potentialDemocraticcandidates forgovernor.StateRep.C.Travis JohnsonofVidaliaresignedfrom hispositionasfirstvicechairman shortlyafter.

Amonthlatersheannounced shewouldn’tberunningandhas sincebackedformertransportationsecretaryandDemocrat ShawnWilsonafterheannounced hisownrun.

Bernhardtbelievesalthough therewasbacklashtothead,it waseffectiveingeneratingmedia attentiontotheparty “Ifounditverydifficulttoget peopletopayanyattentiontothe DemocraticParty,”shesays.“This isoneoftheraretimeswhere someone’sinterestedincoveringit.Typically,peopleareonly interestedincoveringproblems andnotanyofthesolutionsor theworkwe’redoingtogrowand betterourorganization.”

BernhardttellsGambitshe has“noplanstorunforoffice inthefuture,”butmanyDemocratsremainskepticalabout her—orasanextension,thestate party’s—commitment.

“That’snothowpeoplenormallydoit,”Woolardsays.“Butwhen you’rethisfarbehind,whenyou’re alreadythisdisadvantagedinthe numbers,you’vegottomakeup foritsomeotherway.”

Torecruitcandidates,Democratsneedtogetinvolvedin smallerraces,wherealittlemoney cangoalongway,andthenhelp thosepoliticiansworktheirwayup tobiggeroffices—what’sknown inpoliticsas“buildingthebench.”

Landrysaysthat’ssomething Republicanshavebeendoing wellnotonlyhereinLouisiana butnationally.

“Theygoelectpeopletoschool boardorparishcouncilorlittle things,andthenthenexttimethat personrunsforthelegislature, andthenexttimethey’reparish president,andthensuddenly they’reJeffLandryandthey’rein

Congress,”shesays.“That’swhat theydo,and[Democrats]just,it seemslike,expectsomeonetofall outofthesky.”

Buildingthebenchmeansnot justidentifyingcandidatesbut alsosupportingthembygiving themmoney,runningbasicretail campaignslikeknockingondoors andmakingphonecalls.It’salso somethingthatcouldtakeafew electioncycles,evenifDemocrats startnow.

ButWoolardsaysthisistheway tofindcandidateswhohavea chanceatwinninglargerraces

“Ithinkitisproblematicwhen folkswhohaveneverrunacampaignbeforeallofasuddenwant torunacongressionalrace,”she says.“That’sahighhurdletome, tryingtofindsomebodywho’s straightoutthegaterunninga bigrace.”

Layingthegroundworkfora campaignalsogivesacandidate andthepartymoretimetoraise money.Woolardsaystheparty chairshouldberighttherewith thecandidatesputtingincallsto donorsforhourseveryday.

Fromtalkingtopartychairsin otherstates,Woolardconcluded Louisiana’sstatepartyneedsto beraisingatleast$1,000adayto keepthelightson,andnearly$1 millionayearforavoterregistrationandmobilizationpush.

Shesaysthepartyshouldhire peoplewhoknowhowtofundraise,includingafinancedirector andafinancecabinettocome upwithafundraisingplanthat coulddrawonstrategiesthathave workedinotherstates.

Forexample,she’slearnedfrom theWisconsinDemocraticParty thathavingawellthoughtoutplan wherethepartycantellpotential

donorsexactlywheretheirmoney wouldgo—whetherit’straining volunteersorhiringorganizing staff—makespeoplemorewilling todonate

“Ifyou’renotdoingthat,youjust can’thelpDemocraticcandidates, andifyoucan’tgetDemocratic candidateselectedinsomeof theselegislativeandstatewide seats,you’rereallylettingdown workingpeopleandthemost vulnerablepeopleinourstate,” Woolardsays.“Theyhaveno representativesandnochampionswhentheRepublicansarein majoritiesandsupermajorities.”

Year-roundmobilization

Buttheparty’sproblemsaren’t juststructural.ForDemocratsto haveashotatacomeback,they’ll needtoovercomevoterapathy andmobilizevoters.

Therearemorethanhalfa millionunregisteredvotersinthe state,andmanyregisteredvoters don’tturnouttovoteregularly Just51%ofregisteredvoters turnedoutinthe2019governor’s runoff.ForLewis’PublicService Commissionrunoff,amere15% showeduptothepolls Lewisplacestheblameonpoliticiansnotconnectingwithvoters HesayspeoplecareaboutLouisianaandtheirfuturebuthavelost trustintheirelectedleaders.

“Peoplearenotasapatheticas electedofficialsandpoliticalwhiz kidswanttomakethem,”hesays “Theyarejustsaying,‘Ineedto seesomebodywho’sreallygoing toworkandfightformeandnot justtalkthisgame.’”

AndwhenDemocratsdon’t haveacandidatetovoteforthat theybelievehasashotatwinning, itcandiscouragethemfromshowinguptothepollsatall.

Woolardsaysshesawa“huge depressionintheDemocratic base”afterLandrieu’slossin 2014.Whenshewascampaigning forEdwards,manydidn’tbelieve itwaspossibleforaDemocratto winthegovernor’srace.

“Wheneverwe’dcallandsay, ‘We’vegottogetstartedonthis JohnBelEdwards,’everyonewe talkedtowouldbelike,‘Well,he can’twin.ADemocratcan’twin,’” shesays.“Thehighesthurdlewas convincingpeoplehecouldwin.”

Lewisseesmobilizingvotersas notjustgettingthemtoturnout foroneelectionbutkeepingthem engagedinthepoliticalprocess.

“Showingthatwecareisnot [just]sendingatextmessage duringelectionseasonandnot [just]knockingontheirdoor duringelectionseason,”Lewis says.“It’syear-roundorganizing It’syear-roundmobilization.”

Partoftheproblem,according toLewis,ismessaging.During hiscampaign,hepolledhowto discusscertainissuesrelatedto climatechangeandfoundthat Democratsneedtoswapout technicaljargonandstatisticsfor concreteexamplesofhowtheir policieswillimprovevoters’lives.

Thatmeanttalkingtovoters aboutthechangesthey’dbeen seeingovertheyears,likehotter summersandmorefrequent

hurricanes,andabouthow transitioningtorenewableenergy wouldbothcreatejobsandreduce airpollution.

“It’stalkingtopeopleinaway thatconnectswhattheyalready knowintheirlivestothechanges inthepolicy,”Lewissays.“Instead oftryingtoeducatethemondata numbersandfactsasawaytosay that’swhyyoushouldsupportthis policy,(it’s)usingtheirlivedexperiencetosaythisiswhythings shouldbethewayitis.”

Lewissayshewaseven abletogarnerthesupportof someRepublicansthroughthis method.“Wecaredaboutthe samething,”hesays.“Theywant affordableutilities.Theywant accountability.”

Woolardhaslongfoundthat talkingtovotersofallpolitical affiliationsaboutissuesthat mattertothem,alongwithdoing charitableactivitiesinthecommunity,helps“rehumanizetheparty” inaneraofright-wingmediaand extremepolarization.

“Astheconversationwouldgo on,youhumanizeyourselfasa candidatetothem,andthenthey findoutyou’reaDemocrat,and, ‘Oh,wow,Ican’tbelieveyou’re aDemocrat,’”shesays.“That’s theonlywaytocounterwhat they’rehearing,thisright-wing mediaonslaughtthatDemocrats arethedevilandthey’redrinking baby’sblood.Theonlywayto counteritistoberealpeople outinthestreetandoutintheir localmedia.”

BothWoolardandLewisalso agreethatthepartyneedstodoa betterjobofsupportingactivists onthegroundwhoarealready workingtomobilizepeople, likeStepUpLouisiana,Voters OrganizedtoEducate,andPower CoalitionforEquityandJustice

Thesegroupsadvocatefor policiesattheStateCapitol,such asraisingtheminimumwageand closingthegenderpaygap,butoftendon’thaveenoughsupportin thelegislaturetogetthempassed

“Ifyoucouldflipsomeofthese seatsinthelegislatureandmake surewestillhadsomegoodpeopleinthestatewideoffices,their workwouldbesomucheasier,” Woolardsays.“Ithinkthey’dbe soecstatic.”

BothWoolardandBernhardtsee BlackLouisianansandyoungpeopleaskeydemographics.Landry thinksDemocratscangainvotes insuburbslikeJeffersonParish, whileLewisseesopportunitieswith peopleinruralcommunitiesalong theMississippiRiverDelta,theRiverParishes,centralLouisianaand Acadianawhocareaboutissues likepaidfamilyleaveandkeeping hospitalsopen.

Bernhardtaddsthatthelabor movementhaslongbeen“the backbone”oftheDemocratic Party,andLewissaysthattheparty needstoreconnectwithworkersin thestate.

INTHISYEAR’SELECTIONFORGOVERNOR,ONLYONECANDIDATEHAS SHOWNACAREER-LONGABILITYto workacrossthepoliticalaislewhile rejectingthepoliticsofdivision: DemocratShawnWilson.

AnativeNewOrleanian,Wilson doesn’tcomefromapowerfulfamily withlongstandingclaimstooffice. Nordoeshehailfromawealthy backgroundonwhichtobuildthealliancesandbondsthathavelaunched somanyLouisianapoliticalcareers.

Rather,hehasbuiltareputation asafairbrokerandbridgebuilder (literallyandfiguratively)thehard way—byputtinginthework.

Wilsonservedinstategovernment undergovernorsfrombothparties DemocratsKathleenBlancoandJohn BelEdwards,andRepublicansMike FosterandBobbyJindal.Throughout thattime,heconsistentlyworkedfor thebettermentofallLouisianacommunities,notjustthosefallinginline behindthepartyorpersoninpower.

Wilsonalsohasworkedwithlocal leadersineveryparish,andwith RepublicansandDemocratsalikein theLegislature,toimplementtransportationandinfrastructureprojects acrossthestate.Thatexperience giveshimuniqueinsightsintothe challengesLouisianafaces—andan unrivaledfamiliaritywiththepeople he’llneedtoworkwithtomove Louisianaforwardasour nextgovernor.

AsTransportationSecretary,he dealtwithfederalelectedofficials andbureaucrats,membersof CongressandWhiteHousestaffers tosecurefundingforLouisiana.The skillshehonedfromthoseexperienceswillservehimwellasgovernor, particularlyaspandemic-related grantstaperoffandstatesgobackto competingforfederalaid.

Unlikemostothercandidates, Wilsondoesnotvacillateon hot-buttonissues.Duringhismeeting withtheGambiteditorialboard,he wasaskedifhewouldvetofuture anti-transbills.Heansweredyes, unequivocally.Askedabouthispositiononabortion,hevowedtooppose anybillsthatwouldlimitwomen’s accesstohealthcare.Heistheonly candidatewhofavorslettingcitizens decidethelevelofabortionrestrictionsviaapopularvote

Wilson’selectionalsowouldbe historic:hewouldbeLouisiana’s firstBlackelectedgovernor

ReconstructioneraLt.Gov.Oscar Dunn,aRepublican,servedasacting governorin1871—becomingthefirst U.S.governorofAfricandescent buthewasneverelectedtothatpost.

ForyoungBlackpeoplein Louisianaandacrossthecountry,Wilson’selectionwouldbea watershedmoment.Itwouldremind themthatdisenfranchisementisnot permanent,thatsystemicracism canbeovercome.Likewise,Wilson’s supportforwomen’srightsandthe rightsanddignityofLGBTQpeople wouldsendamessagethattheyhave notbeenabandonedinthenameof politicalexpediency.

Overall,theelectionofShawn WilsonasLouisiana’snextgovernor willsendamessagetotherestofthe nationandtheworldthatLouisiana hasrejectedthepoliticsofdivision andstandsreadytotakesitsplace amongthemostacceptingplaces inAmerica—atatimewhentoo manystatesaresendingtheoppositemessage

WebelieveLouisianansofgood consciencemustlikewiserejectpartisanshipanddogwhistlesandtakea standforcompetence,bipartisanship andinclusion.Beingabletoworkwith theothersideofthepoliticalaisle isa“must”forournextgovernor, becausesomuchisatstake—and doesn’thavetocomeattheexpense ofthemostvulnerable

wouldprohibittheuseofdonationsbyaforeigngovernmentor nongovernmentalsourcetohelp conductelectionsinLouisiana Statelawmakerspassedseveralbills barringthisinrecentyears,andall

wererightlyvetoedbyGov.John BelEdwards.We,ofcourse,believe thatforeigngovernmentsshould notunderwriteLouisianaelections, butthat’snottherealaimofthis amendment.It’sanattempttooutlawlegitimatenonprofitgrantsthat helpourelectionsrunsmoothlyand increasevoterparticipation—two thingsvotersuppressorsdon’tlike. KEVINPEDEAUXWASSERVINGCOFFEEIN ST.ROCHMARKETthedayitopenedasa foodhallbackin2015.Inthetimesince he’sseentheSt.ClaudeAvenuelandmarkthriveinitsmodernincarnation, andhe’sseenthewaysitfellshort.

Whatgavehimdread,though,was envisioningtheoldmarketplaceshuttered,asithadbeenforsomanyyears.

Tohim,thestakesarestark:Either thefoodhallcanliveuptoitspotential,orthehistoricbuildingwillagain languishandagatewayfornewfood businesseswillclose.

NowPedeauxissteeringSt RochMarkettowhateverthenext chapterholds.

“TherearetoomanythingsinNew Orleansthatneedaction,andhere’s onethingthatIcando,becauseIknow thebusiness,becauseIknowthe building,”hesays.“Ican’tcomplain aboutwhatelseshouldbebetterin NewOrleansifIhadashottokeepthe marketgoinganddidn’ttakeit.”

Pedeaux’sCRCoffeeShopstillhas astandinthemarket.Butherecently changedfromvendortooperator, takingovermanagementofSt.Roch MarketfromPolitanRow,thecompany thatunderdifferentnameshasrunthe multi-vendorfoodhallsinceitsinception.HeessentiallyisassumingPolitan Row’sleaseforthecity-ownedproperty Somechangesalreadyareturning up.Thatincludesnewvendorscoming in,includingonecalledGenevieve,for rawoysters,Creolegumboandother localflavors,andanotherformodern VietnamesedishesfromTungNguyen, whoranastandhereyearsearlierwith hisT2StreetFood.

Thebusinesshasbeenrunningata lossofabout$9,600permonth,he says.He’sinheritingthesamelease agreementwiththecityasmaster tenant,paying$6,500amonth.For now,he’skeepingthesameleases inplacewithfoodhallvendors,who payeither30%ofsalesor$150a dayplus15%ofsales,dependingon whentheyleased

Itisveryearlygoingatthemarket, butsomevendorsareexpressing moreoptimism.Oneofthoseis JeromeGrenierattheFrenchStall.

“Iwastryingtogetoutbefore,but nowthatKevinhastakenover,Iwant togiveitanothershot,”Greniersays.

Foodhallprojectshadbecomea majortrendinAmericancities,where theytypicallycombinecasualdining incommunalareaswithartisanand specialtygroceries.Therearelongstandingtemplatesforthemodel, likePikePlaceMarketinSeattle. Newerexamples,likeSanFrancisco’s FerryBuilding,havequicklybecome majorattractions.

PolitanRowitselfdeveloped numerousnewfoodhallsinothercitiesjustbeforethepandemic.Some oftheseclosed,thoughthecompany isnowgrowinginAtlanta,whereit operatesonehallandhastwomore indevelopment.

InNewOrleansthough,thetrend hasallbutcollapsed.RouxCarre, anoutdoorfoodhalldevelopedasa nonprofitinCentralCity,closedin 2018,wellbeforeCovid.Ithassince beendemolished.

AuctionHouseMarketopened in2018,andwasoriginallyrunby PolitanRow.Thebuildingowner, FelicityPropertyCo.,tookover managementofthehallin2020, anditclosedin2022.Theproperty at801MagazineSt.brieflyreturned undernewmanagementasthe HallonMag,butthatlastedjusta fewmonths.Itisnowbecoming aconventionalrestaurant,witha BoulevardAmericanBistrolocation takingshapehere.

While batshave become associated with theHalloween season, the realityisthatthese animals aresmart, sociable,and generallynot athreat to humans.AtAudubon Zoo, about 245 Seba’s short-tailedbatsliveina habitat that’s been speciallydesigned to meettheir needs as well as give visitors achancetosee them up close.

Dominque Fleitas, assistant curator of theLouisiana Swamp Exhibitand Jaguar Jungle at Audubon Zoo, spoke aboutthe bats, theirdaily routines and howlocalscan help sustain bat populations.

What arethe mostcommon misconceptions aboutbats?

When we rst opened thenocturnal house at theZoo,people would say that they thought batscausedhavoc. That’s notthe case.Theydon’t want to y in your hair.They’re notactively seekingout ways to disturb people.In fact, batsuse echolocationtosendout sounds and have thosesounds bounce off objectstolearnhow far away they are and thesizesotheyknowwhatto avoid.Whenpeoplesee abat and start moving aroundfrantically, that disruptsthe information thebat receives and cancause them to perhaps y near aperson. But, if people stay still and calm,there’s notgoingtobeanissue. Also,given theamountand varietyof fruitthatSeba’sshort-tailedbatseat, they playanimportant ecologicalrole as pollinators and seed dispersers.

What kind of habitat does Audubon Zoohavefor thebats?

Ourexhibitlightsare settoacompletely opposite schedule.Whenit’s brightand sunny outside, it’s dark in theirhabitat.Whenit’snighttime for us,it’sbrightinthe exhibit.

During thebats’ daytime –which is overnightfor us –they’ll sleepand recharge.Wedoa light cycle change around11a.m.where things slowly transition from very bright to an orange color and then amoonlight setting.It’sdarkenough forthe bats to performtheir natural behaviorsbut justbrightenoughfor people to see them.Wealsohavea very darkarea near thedoorway for anybatsthat want to rest and notbebotheredby anylights

What do thebatseat and howoenare they fed?

Ourbatsget quitea bitoffood. We give them abat slaw, which includes a lotoffruits and vegetableslikeapples, cucumbers,zucchini, carrotsand peas. We alsogivethemaspecialized biscuitthatissoakedinliquid to give them thenutrients they need.This also helpstoensure they aregetting enough water. There’salsoabat gel with alot of vitamins and minerals that is mixedintothe slaw. When it’s time forfeeding, we put everything together into threelarge crawsh trays. It’s anicebroad surface so thebatscan eatasmuch as they want.Acouple of them will land and spread theirwings over as much food as possible. Alot of them will swoop down and grab food with theirmouth and then y offtoeat elsewhere

If you’re walkingthroughthe exhibit, you’llnoticefruitsand vegetables hanging onskewers.Some days, they devour theseand some days they eata little less,but we liketomakesure they

have avariety to choose from and a chancetoexhibit foragingbehaviors.

Do thebatshaveany unique behaviorsorpersonality traits?

It’s difficult to tell them apart, but sometimeswe’ll notice onesthat behave in aunique way. On thekeeper sideofthe exhibit, we have asmall vestibule to change clothes andput on glovesand eyeprotection. There was onebat that would always y into the vestibuleand hangout for alittlebit when someone wasinthere.Weended up naming himChad. Thebatsusually live to be eightto 10 yearsold and we’llnoticesome changesastheyget older.Wehave what we call ageriatric ward setupfor theolderbatsiftheyneed some extra TLC, have ahard time yingorneedto rest and have agood meal.

Oneofthe main traits of bats is that they want to be in small, tight-knit groups. It helpsthemwithtemperature regulation andoverall security. Occasionally,we’ll seeonesthatwant to hang outontheir own, butmost of them liketostaytogether in the same area.

What should someone do if they seeabat in thewild?

It’s recommended that youdonot pick them up,especiallyifyou don’t have gloves to protect your hands.More oen than not, if yousee abat alone, it’s ayoungone that’s been separated from itsmother. Thebestthing to do is call theLouisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.Theycan give instructions on thebestnextsteps or send aprofessionaltoretrieveitsafely.

What kind of conservation efforts areunderway to help sustain batpopulations?

TheSeba’sshort-tailedbatsare not consideredendangered, which is agood thing.Other bat speciesare facing more issues due to human encroachment, deforestation and theloss of their habitats. TheLubee BatConservancyin Florida and BatConservationInternational areworking to address those issues as well as adisease that some batsget that creates afungus.

Locally, people create bat boxesto maintain population numbers. They can be purchased online or builtwithsimple materialslikewood and exterior-grade paint. If youhavea bat box, it’s importantthatit’sasmall,tightspace where they will be safe,plus scoredenough so they cangrasp it with theirfeet. It should be mounted at least10feet above theground and abit away from people.Wealsorecommendthatthe bat boxisinasunnyspotwhere it can absorb warmthduring theday
