DOVE ERAVAMO RIMASTI...

Story of a miracle Also lived and worked in Milazzo S. Francesco di Paola, famous for his kindness, humility, and zeal for his faith in the Lord that enabled him to work the miracle of crossing the Straits of Messina plowing through the turbulent waves of the sea on his cloak himself in the company of a young monk of origin Milazzo, one between ‘Maiorana. The feast of St. Francis, patron saint of seafarers, is deeply felt by us and is celebrated the first Sunday in May, this follows the Feast of “Berrettella” in which a relic of the saint (the hat) is brought in pilgrimage to the waters of the sea off the promontory (see photo).

Castle, national monument, with an area of over 7 hectares of which 12,070 square meters covered by buildings, towers over the landscape of Milazzo to the top of the old “Borgo”. The first and second rudimentary fortifications dating from the Stone Age: Ne olithic (4,000 BC). Later, with the first Greek colonists (VIII-VII century BC.), This modest agglomeration took shape and became bigger. Thus, the acropolis (fortified town) took up a new dimension to increase the role and importance of the next castrum (castle) Roman-Byzantine Empire. They were, however, the Arabs, that after 843 gave birth to the first group (the oldest part) of the castle ruins and foundations of the local civilization, Greek, Roman and Byzantine. Later, the Normans and the Swabians built new facilities, the Aragonese nor appropriate plant defense, and finally the Spaniards surrounded him with the mighty ramparts giving the dimensions of a “citadel”. Since then the Castle of Milazzo took its full and final conformation that come down to us.

ITINERARI STORICI

LEGGENDE E CURIOSITÀ legends and curiosity

Colapesce

30

The legend tells of a certain Nicola (Cola di Messina), son of a fisherman, nicknamed Colapesce for his ability to move in the water. His fame came to the king of Sicily and emperor Federico II di Svevia who decided to test him: the king threw a cup into the water which was immediately recovered by Colapesce. The king then threw his crown in a deeper place and Colapesce again succeeded in the undertaking. The third time the king put Cola to the test by throwing a ring into an even deeper place and on that occasion Colapesce saw that Sicily lay on 3 columns, one of which was full of showy cracks and marked by time. Legend has it that Colapesce decided to stay underwater replaced the column supporting Sicily to prevent it from sinking.

Milazzo, dalle origini

history

LA STORIA

MILAZZO FROM THE ORIGINS

44

The Story of Milazzo goes back to the early settlements of the Neolithic age (4000 BC). E ‘with the Sicilians, however, that the city ac quires wealth until the late seventh or early sixth century. BC, when it began the expansion of the he gemony of Greek populations Zancle (now Messina), even the nucleus of these Milazzo was subdued and turned into a “Polis” fortified, submission to the nearby Messina lasted until 270 BC. In Roman times its waters were the scene of two major naval battles. In 260 BC, the city witnessed the triumph of the Roman fleet commanded by the consul Caio Duilio on the Carthaginian (Punic War) In 36 BC, two centuries later, Milazzo has become an important naval base of Sextus Pompey, was linked to events in the civil war between this ‘and last for Octavian’s naval victory Vipsanio Agrip-pa, commander of the fleet of Octavian over Sextus Pompey. Under the empire of the east, the town, not only was part of an important defensive triangle, but also became a major bishoprics Sicily.

Occurred with its conquest in 843 by Ibn Fadhl Giaf begins Muslim rule. Ruggero D’Altavilla in 1061 seized the city and the fort again become a bridgehead for the Norman conquest and the expulsion of Muslims from Sicily. Then embedded in the royal dominion by Frederick II of Swabia, his new castle was inserted between the “castra Exent” under direct royal jurisdiction. In the war of the Sicilian Vespers (1282) Milazzo was alternately occupied by two sovereign contenders: Charles of Anjou and Peter of Aragon. For nearly a century after it was again taken by the Anjou in 1341 and until the early sixteenth century. Milazzo was the focus of many troubled and war events related to the feudal conflicts that have bloodied Sicily. During the Spanish domination of the city increased its strategic importance. In this period the last most important and impres sive for tifications of the historic castle that still can be admired. It was several times the seat of the Viceroy of Sicily and Lieutenants. The last flickers of Spanish rule in 1713 when it ran out, the sovereignty of Sicily went to Victor Amadeus II of Savoy. Compartment was an attempt to recapture by Philip V of Spain, who undertook the Austro - Piemontese in the vast and bloody siege of the city from July 1718 to May 1719. During the siege the serious damage or destruction to the historic and monumental. With the advent of the Bourbons on the throne of the Two Sicilies, the city retained its strategic military. On July 20, 1860, Milazzo was the scene of the famous and decisive battle between the troops of Garibaldi and the troops of Francis II of Bourbon. With the advent of the Kingdom of Italy, the city lost its strategic military importance. During the Second World War Milazzo suffered massive and bloody bombings. Identified as a landing zone in the plane of the English invasion of Sicily, its port was given a signi ficant boost in defense as an important center of maritime, rail and military.
