My name is Stephon Beard, RN, BSN, and I’m proud to be from La Marque, Texas (BOI). I graduated from La Marque High School, Class of 2009, and went on to earn three degrees from Galveston College- in General Studies, Nursing (Associate), and Bachelor of Nursing. I specialize in Pediatrics, a field that brings me great joy.
My inspiration to become a nurse came from my mother, who’s been a nurse for nearly 30 years, and from summers spent caring for my uncle with MS. I enjoy fishing, playing Madden, and cooking BBQ, but most of all, I love spending time with my family. I find happiness in others’ success, the laughter of children, and warm hugs. Phlebotomy Technician
This program prepares students to become skilled professionals in the collection and handling of blood specimens for laboratory analysis. This program emphasizes safety, accuracy, and patient care, equipping students with the skills needed to work in hospitals, laboratories, blood donation centers, and other healthcare settings.
• Learn to perform venipuncture and capillary puncture procedures safely and efficiently. Students may be asked to practice venipunctures on each other.
• Understand the anatomy and physiology of the circulatory system.

The EKG Technician Certification program prepares students to perform diagnostic tests that monitor and record the electrical activity of the heart. This program provides foundational knowledge in cardiovascular anatomy, medical terminology, and the technical skills needed to operate EKG machines and support cardiac care teams. Students will learn how to perform electrocardiograms, stress tests, and Holter monitoring procedures while gaining insight into patient care, cardiac rhythms, and healthcare safety standards.

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program prepares students to provide critical pre-hospital care in emergency situations. Upon successful completion, students are eligible to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) exam to become certified EMTs. Graduates can pursue careers with ambulance services, fire departments, hospitals, and other emergency response teams.
You must bring your driver’s license, social security card and immunization records to the orientation; get assistance with creating a prof ile through Complio to upload your documents there. A background check and drug screening will also be done through Complio.

Emergency Medical Responder/Emergency Care Attendant

This 8-week hybrid EMR/ECA program prepares students for entry-level roles in emergency medical services and related fields. All coursework is delivered online through interactive modules, case studies, and assessments, except for two required 8-hour in-person lab days. Online instruction covers patient assessment, trauma and medical emergencies, airway management, CPR/AED theory, and emergency scene operations. In-person sessions include CPR/AED certification and hands-on skills practice such as bleeding control, splinting, patient movement, and simulated emergency scenarios.
Upon completion, students will have foundational knowledge and practical skills needed to support emergency response teams and pursue entry-level certification opportunities where applicable.

Scott Miles
EMS Program Director, Instructor
Miles began his career as a medic in the U.S. Army before transitioning into civilian EMS, where he rose through the ranks as an EMT, paramedic and flight paramedic. He has worked across urban, rural, and frontier settings, gaining firsthand knowledge of the challenges and rewards of emergency care in diverse environments.
His passion for advancing EMS standards led him to education early in his career. Miles served as a clinical educator for Flight for Life in Tyler, and later as director of Clinical and Educational Services for a large ambulance service, where he developed innovative training programs that elevated care quality and professional development. Since 2005, he has focused on higher education, serving as program coordinator, professor and mentor to future EMS professionals.
“EMS is about people,” said Miles. “I’ve always enjoyed helping others, and I see teaching as an extension of that service, coaching, mentoring and building pathways for student success.”

Mammography
The Mammography Certification Program is an 8-week hybrid program designed for licensed radiologic technologists seeking to expand their skills in breast imaging. Students complete online coursework covering mammographic procedures, patient care, positioning, quality assurance, radiation safety and breast pathology, while simultaneously gaining hands-on experience through supervised clinical training at an approved mammography facility. Upon successful completion of the program, students will be prepared to pursue mammography certification and advance their careers in diagnostic imaging.
Prerequisite: Current certification and registration as a Radiologic Technologist (ARRT or equivalent credential).

K. Stewart Mammography Instructor
Kristin Stewart, MRT, RT(R)(M) is a licensed Medical Radiologic Technologist who has held her radiography license for 12 years and her mammography certification for 11 years. She is a certified Health Science teacher who prepares future Limited Medical Radiologic Technologists (LMRTs) through the partnership between Dickinson High School and Galveston College’s Bridge Program.
Kristin has served as an adjunct instructor with Galveston College for the past three years and is beginning her fourth year. She serves as the Lead Instructor for the LMRT Program and will also serve as the instructor for the Mammography Program. Her teaching emphasizes clinical excellence, patient-centered care, image quality, radiation safety, and comprehensive preparation for the ARRT Mammography Certification Examination.

Desktop Support Technician - CompTIA A+ and Network+ Certification Training
This program explores PC system software, hardware and operating systems. Topics covered include system boards, processors, memory, power supplies, input/output (I/O) ports, internal adapters, printers and basic networking devices.
The fundamentals of computer networking including the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model, network architecture such as local area networks (LANs) and wide area networks (WANs) are addressed. Faye Powell

After 25 years of working in the real estate industry, Faye Powell decided to pursue her lifelong passions for cooking and pastry. She received her degree in Culinary Arts from Galveston College, having previously earned her BFA in English and Arts History from UH.
He holds an AAS in Welding from GC and is pursing his degree in Culinary Arts. He is the president of GC’s Sigma Gamma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa and the recipient of several prestigious culinary and academic scholarships. He’s a member of a local chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, where he serves as a post Chaplain. He has one son, Noah, who is 17 years old.
Chef Powell has worked in special event catering, as a pastry chef at Moody Gardens Hotel & Convention Center, and most recently as Catering Sales Manager for Landry’s hotels. She loves to design exceptional dining experiences for clients, and is thrilled to share her extensive experience in catering and culinary practices with students of all ages. In her personal time, she enjoys traveling and eating around the world with her husband.

Barry Jones is a multidisciplinary artist with a foundation in ceramics and nearly 20 years’ experience working with clay. She received a BFA in Ceramics from Lamar University, Beaumont, where she was born, and a full scholarship to the graduate program at Houston Christian University earning an MFA in sculpture and ceramics.
Barry Jones runs the Art Department and Art Gallery at Galveston College and lives and works as a professional artist in Houston. Galveston College Community Chorale
Come be a part of the Galveston College Community Chorale. With a rich blend of voices from across the island and beyond, the Chorale unites singers of all backgrounds to create powerful, moving performances that resonate deeply with audiences. Under the inspiring leadership of Michael Gilbert the Chorale consistently delivers performances that uplift, connect, and inspire. The chorale performs at least two concerts a year in the community. The Chorale is a non-auditioned vocal ensemble open to singers of all skills.

Michael Gilbert’s entire 31-year teaching career was with the Galveston Independent School District. His beginning years as a choral director were at Weis & Central Middle Schools, followed by teaching at Ball High School for twentythree years, where he was also department chairman for the fine arts. Gilbert’s choirs and students consistently received superior ratings in performance in UIL regional, state and national levels. His Bachelor of Music degree was earned from Texas A&I University and he earned two masters degrees from the University of Houston in music education and school administration.
Gilbert has served as church music director in Galveston for Central Christian Church, First Baptist Church and most recently served nine years as music director at Moody Methodist Church. He has been a member of the Houston Symphony Chorus since 1985, served on the Houston Symphony Chorus Council for three years, and director of the Galveston College Community Chorale since the fall of 2009.
Community interests include serving on the East End Historical District Association and Galveston Historical Foundation’s board of directors. Since 1994 he has served on the board of directors for the Houston/Galveston Stavanger (Norway) Sister City Society. Other interest and hobbies include: performing, playing golf, baseball, gardening and eating Blue Bell ice cream. Gilbert is also the proud grandfather of Zach and Max.
Through a partnership with College of the Mainland (COM), students
take classes for high school equivalency prep (HSE/GED) and English as a second language (ESL) right here at Galveston College.
High School Equivalency (GED)
Develop the reading, writing, and math skills needed to pass a Texas high school equivalency exam. These classes are also a great place to improve skills to advance into a college program.
English as a Second Language (ESL)
ESL classes help students improve their everyday English, get ready to attend college, or learn new job skills. Classes cover reading, writing, listening and speaking the English language.
