This catalogue deals with Anthropology as the subject

of Man and communities. However, emotional geography, local history and traditions, rites and myths, life and characters linked to the territory are also intertwined. Flipping through the pages of the catalogue, you take a journey through the landscapes, from the sound to the Cultural, from the literary to the sacred, thus building an emotional mosaic of the Gal Start2020 area.

The text is accompanied by an authorial photographic repertoire and has as its Polar Star the valorization of the existing events during the year, to which the communities feel they belong physically and emotionally. A sense of belonging, not exclusive, open, bearer, educated to participation and sharing, capable of forming new experiential communities each time. The catalogue has a unique reading key despite the merging of many disciplines. It develops like a kaleidoscope that disposes in a different way elements that were believed to be immutable. Value was given to the territory by linking possible reading keys: the role of geography, literature, the sense of place, cultural roots and roots, the interior landscape, culture and ethnic-territorial consciousness. The objective of this catalog is to bring out and enhance the cultural aspects of the territory, interacting with local cultures and “expectations”; in this project “ Anthropology of emotions”, we aim to: - to enhance the ethno–anthropological, historical and cultural heritage through the creation of new cultural formats and authentic experiences; - to highlight the “public feeling of communities” and Share social emotions with visitors and guests who, from today, have an additional tool to tell and tell themselves. This leads us to a series of reflections and comparisons that have as a barycentric point the involvement of the territories and the integration between experimentation, contamination and economic and social fallout on the territory. Leonardo BRAICO - The President LAG Start 2020 S.r.l.

“ f you want to understand what a science is, the American anthropologist Clifford Geertz writes, you should not follow theories but look at the specialists, those who put them into practice, women and men who live the community, who are driven by emotions and feelings.” They are people, carrying a personal experience and history, living in the present but coming from the past and being renewed through the transmission of knowledge, culture, processes, rules of behaviour and lifestyles: family, social, cultural, territorial.

Emotions are a social and cultural map. Not only ideas, but also emotions and passions are cultural products of man. From food to fairy tales, from the spoken language to religious festivals, a space of human experience we can define as “anthropology of emotions”. Emotions are not a neutral element but move into a space where individual, body and society meet and merge.

This catalogue has a narrative and performative approach in which the physical and bodily dimension is not neglected, favoring representations and ideas that take shape from emotions. There is a cultural force that runs through and inhabits a space in which individual and “emotional” freedom intersects and participates in collective construction. Emotions capable of determining the difference of events in an era that sees a proliferation of initiatives, of rediscovery of identity, of valorization of agro-food productions and eno-gastronomic traditions also in key of Tourism Promotion.

The Morphology of Landscape, University of California Publications in Geography.

12

THE LANDSCAPE The Cultural Landscape Cultural landscapes are cultural heritage and represent the “combined work of nature and man”. They illustrate the evolution of settlements and human society over time, under the influence of physical constraints and / or opportunities presented by the relevant natural environment and subsequent social, economic and cultural forces both external and internal” The concept of cultural landscape can be summarized in the definition of Carl O. Sauer: “The cultural landscape is forged by a natural landscape by a cultural group. Culture is the agent, natural elements are the medium, cultural landscape is the result. (Sauer, C. 1925, The Morphology of Landscape, University of California Publications in Geography.

AND LITERATURE

Parco Letterario Isabella Morra di Valsinni Isabella Morra literary park of Valsinni

Isabella Morra, il parco letterario

Isabella Morra, the literary Park

the literary Park offers a “sentimental” path that starts from the heart of the medieval village of Valsinni to the castle, home of the Morras. Exploring the alleys and narrow streets in the historic centre, the visitors, in the evening hours of summer, are accompanied by minstrels and performances which, in an evocative atmosphere, relive the tragic events of the fate of the young female poet, first as a recluse for trivial “reasons of honor” and then killed by her own brothers at 25 because of an affair with a Spanish nobleman unwelcome to her family.

ALBINO PIERRO

16

Albino Pierro, il Parco Letterario e il Centro Studi - Tursi

Albino Pierro his literary Park and the Study Center

The bond of the great poet Albino Pierro (Tursi, November 19, 1916 – Rome, march 23, 1995) with his and our “Land of the memory”, has been and still is intense, we would say indissoluble, for his poetics and because he has given a literary dignity to a language which did not exist before him, with the “conversion” to the lyricism of the tursitano dialect. A few years before the death of the poet, Stanislao Nievo had had the happy intuition of the Literary Parks, officially born in 1992, when a honorary degree was given to Pierro, regarded as one of the greatest poets of the second half of the Twentieth century Italian literature and on several occasions, Nobel Prize nominee. The Literary Park The obvious consequence has therefore been the creation of the Literary Park dedicated to Albino Pierro in Tursi, after recognising a very close relationship author-hometown paying a tribute to him, in the newly appointed “Tursi City of Pierro”, to promote his memory and poems, his historical and cultural heritage, and the survival of the dialect, with the organization of events in the level, appropriate events and consistent guided tours. For the poet, born in Rabatana, the oldest district of Tursi, characterized by the Arab-Saracen settlement (about 850-930), his hometown is the “place of the soul”, certainly the territory that more than others, in his continuous travelling , marked and inspired him, the place where he wanted to be buried in the municipal cemetery.

Fiati Festival Ferrandina - PH R. MASTRANGELO

20

THE SOUNDSCAPE The definition of soundscape intersects elements of philosophy, anthropology and physics, in a path that has crossed generations and communities over time. The sounds in the landscape can be defined in short as “the soundtrack of our lives” starting from the sounds that we perceive involuntarily to those that we try to create, as the sound of a bell of a church, the music in a feast, the one produced by a bell hanging from the neck of an ox; in a word, all those sounds whereby a community recognizes or acknowledges its identity and belonging. An emotional landscape that connects noise, silence, the sacred, the profane.

Ernest Hemingway

22

“Living was the image of a wheat field swaying in the wind on the side of a hill. Living was a hawk in the sky. Living was a jar of land filled with water in the dust of threshing, with wheat thrown into the air and chaff flying. Ernest Hemingway 23

The Masciara of Colobraro became the best known visual icon of that magical South described by De Martino in the south and magic and magic in LUCANIA. The word comes from the Lombard “masca”, that is, witch. Thousands of legends have flourished around the Lucan masciar, fueled by superstition and ignorance and by the ancestral subjection of the people to her figure of healer. It was thought that the masciare were depositories of ancient magic formulas and secret virtues of herbs, so they were for centuries feared or marginalized. Usually we went to the mascaras driven by despair, when other more conventional remedies had been useless. We went to the darkness, almost secretly with a sense of guilt mixed with hope and trepidation.

SAN ROCCO SAINTS AND MADONNAS In the various communities, spirituality takes different forms and attitudes but shares one common denominator: it is the only asset men could turn to, even so limited, enriched by an area opening up to the relation between man and nature. 26

THE BONFIRES OF ST. JOSEPH There is a moon capturing even those who never look at the sky. Bonfires are lit as the sun enters the Ram: it is St. Joseph’s Celebration”. During the festival, olive and broom branches are burned to drive away winter and its demons through an archaic ritual which is repeated yearly in many Lucanian communities.

E come è tradizione, Carnevale muore sempre a pancia piena.

THE CARNIVAL The rites of Carnival are the occasion when the deepest ancestral impulses of the Southern agropastoral civilization shows all their spectacularity. There is no community in the South in which you do not renew the traditions that change from country to country, maintaining, however some common traits: the connection with the rites of fertility, the start of a new cycle, seasonal agriculture, the awakening of nature, the expulsion of the old, the relationship with the forest, the transhumance, the grafting of Christian civilization, with the death references, and especially the upcoming Lent. In Basilicata some of the most complex and codified Southern traditions are preserved, whose deepest roots go back to the rites connected to the awakening of nature and the Roman Saturnalia rites. As elsewhere, local inhabitants also offer wine, cured meat and cheese, the dowry for the night libations before the Carnival ends. And according to the tradition, Carnival always dies with a full stomach. Carlo Levi was strongly impressed by this and wrote: “late at night, the village was awoken by an archaic noise, the beating of hollow wooden instruments, like cracked bells: a noise of early forest penetrating into the bowels as an infinitely remote call; and all, men and animals, climbed the mountains”. 50

Sant’Antuono, on January 17th, is the date when Carnival starts. According to the tradition in the afternoon the large and deep cellars-caves of the village are set up with embers, plates, wine, cheese and cured meat, ready to replenish and support the effort of the “players”. The songs and sounds are in fact the strong element of Carnival. The Cupa Cupa sound, the squawks, the cowbells. During the Pomarico carnival, with the “song of Zeza” merits and defects of the natives are sung in the square, mocking the local powerful people. There has been much debate about its origins: some believe that it is to be associated with the villanelle (a sort of comic-satirical song of the 1500s), others still think that it originated in the 1600s. While Benedetto Croce, who also analysed the origins of the song of Zeza, claimed that it is to be placed in 1700, a time when it was used as an intermezzo recited and sung during the so-called pulcinellate. The group of musicians and singers used to ask in advance the consent to perform in the house, (according to a formula recited and sung) and, only after the owners’ consent, the performance started, played in the neighbourhood and the players were rewarded with some piece of seasoned sausage, dried figs, biscuits, 51

and, rarely, with a sum of money. That night ended with songs and dances. The protagonists who make up this ancient farce were four: Zeza, Vincenzella ( Zeza and Pulcinella’s daughter), don Nicola and Pulcinella. As it was customary in ancient comedy female roles were played by men disguised as women. The story tells about the love between Vincenzella and don Nicola, thwarted by her father but strongly encouraged by her mother. After some misadventures, the story ends with the inevitable happy ending and the betrothed obtain Pulcinella’s consent to get married.

ABBAZIA BENEDETTINA DI SAN MICHELE ARCANGELO - MONTESCAGLIOSO

53

CUCIBOCCA

The cucibocca (cos ‘ vucc), also present in Montescaglioso Carnival, are the central characters of this mysterious tradition, rich in symbolism that takes place every year the night before the Epiphany and concludes the Christmas holidays. They are mysterious figures dressed in dark: wearing cloaks, old coats, a hat or a hemp disc from the crusher, their faces covered with thick white beards. A broken chain is tied to their feet. The dull sound of the chain crawling on the pavement announces their passage, they knock and ask for offers from door to door. Carrying a basket, a lantern and a long needle in their hands, threatening to sew the mouth to the children. By scaring them, they will go to bed and leave the way to Befana who will bring her gifts. The cucibocca represent a unique tradition in Italy whose origin is still obscure. The parade proceeds in silence at night, people lock themselves into their house and leave an offer, food and water to quench the souls burned by the flames. The mysterious parade of the cucibocca, seems to reproduce the procession of the purgatory souls. 55

THE WOMAN “The woman in the black shawl. In old pictures gloomy and lonely figures appeared, carrying all the weight of fatigue on their shoulders ”. Their silence was not a form of submission but an “economy of speech”. The right word, the useful word. The sacred word was usually feminine. The figure of the woman over time, in the various changes of the rural world, has modified its image thanks to new attitudes in their daily struggle against the ordinary, the fatigue, the hunger, the large family and the extraordinary, sudden diseases, famine, widowhood, their demands. This renewed and momentous change in the role of women in society can be found in Isabella Morra’s lines and rhymes, reckoned as one of the most important Italian female poets, murdered for her skill in using the word to claim the role of a free woman. Maria Lucia Dinnella called Maria “ a ‘Pastora” from Pisticci is one of the most feared brigands, companion to the legendary brigand Ninco Nanco. She was an independent free woman and at only 18, while working as a labourer under a false name in a masseria in San Basilio, she was noticed and kidnapped by the robber Francesco Antonio Summa, the brother of the famous leader Giuseppe called Ninco Nanco and offered to him as a gift. She was a beautiful woman, a peasant woman, always dressed as a man, but without denying her femininity. He fell madly in love with the leader of the brigands, for the charm he exerted. They got married with the rustic ritual of the blood, promising eternal love and fidelity to each other. Then he discovered that he was cheating on her with other women and blinded by jealousy was capable of a horrible act, revealing to the authorities the place where Ninco Nanco was hiding;

60

he was killed point blank . In March 1864 Maria Dinella was arrested, tried and sentenced to ten years’ prison on the Island of Giglio and released after five years. Maria Barbella from Ferrandina, a young Italian emigrant, left Ferrandina at the end of the nineteenth century, was sentenced to death and saved thanks to an American noblewoman. It happens in Manhattan on April 26, 1895, Maria Barbella, a shy Italian emigrant girl, cuts the throat of Domenico Cataldo, a shoe-shine from Chiaromonte who had seduced her with a promise of marriage and then abandoned her. After a hasty and tinged with racism trial, Maria is sentenced to the electric chair, and the death penalty would be carried out immediately applied had not the Countess of Brazzà, Cora Slocomb, a woman of American origin married to an Italian nobleman from Friuli , taken to heart Mary’s situation, held in Sing Sing prison, committing to convince the American justice and the public to order a retrial. This was the first American campaign against the death penalty. Many faces many women, female labourers who worked in the fields, soldiers’ wives mourning their life and with children to raise, or rioters’ wives in peasant struggles. Migrants’ wives, White widows, raising children and waiting for a letter. The woman, mother of all, Mary and her shrines, Anglona, one among all. A comforting, protective woman. Songs, colors for her feast, crying for Holy Friday, food offered in her honor. Patron or protector, always present in the sacred altar of each family and then becoming, from private mother to mother of a community, an image carried in procession.

63

Metapontion: Pitagora e la valorizzazione della figura femminile The lands of Basilicata were one of the destinations of the first Greek colonization in Italy. The first stable settlement, called Siris, dates back to the eighth century BC and was located on the Bank of the river carrying the same name, later called Sinni. The city located on the Ionian River, near the mouth of the Sinni River, was founded by refugees from Colophones in the Central-Western Turkey, who fled to the West to escape the domination of the nearby city of Lidia. In 630 BC. Metaponto was founded by Greek settlers of Achaean ethnicity, and the colonization of the entire Ionian coast of Lucania began. With the exile of Pythagoras to Metaponto, the master from Samo suggested to the women of the town to avoid a life devoted to vanity and the accumulation of riches but to seek themselves and their essence, in the practice of virtues and study. Therefore, many women offered their best clothes to the temple of Hera and began the study of mathematics, astronomy, music and theology within the Pythagorean school.

Inni Orfici

64

This being the only philosophical and pedagogical reality where women were admitted. If the Greek woman already had rights and powers that only belonged to her (such as the emancipation of slaves), the Pythagorean one has an even more important function in the sacred perspective covered by the philosophy of the master from Samo. Also because the woman, was considered linked to the Moon and therefore matrix of the universe, generator of Everything, able to bestow graces, health and prosperity. There were many women to have a great importance because the model “Pythagorean” was that of a merit-based system; there was no difference between Greeks and non-Greeks, between men and women, where each living being and also women could have access to knowledge: it is a pity that the misogyny of the old Christianity led to the cancellation of their works, and what remained, was sought to be burned. Although today only a few news remain, they are enough to state how important the woman was for the Pythagoreans.

The legend says that the Naiads were nymphs with wonderful powers, the only silent Guardians of the Temple of Hera.

66

The weaver Arachne (Aracne), and the goddess Athena The story says that Arachne was famous for her fabric, a beautiful and artistic canvas of such magnificence and perfection to upset a long-standing balance between the human and the divine, much to arouse the resentment of the goddess Athena who , beholding such wonder, decides to inflict firm punishments on the human Arachne, therefore transforming the fate and the shape of a poor weaver. Arachne is the protagonist of a metamorphosis that will condemn her to weave her precious web in the form of a spider forever. A narrative of the art of the use of the frame, symbol of the ancient female power between magical, symbolic and ritual, typical of theSouthern lands.
