Thanksgiving Guide: Something for Every GAL: By PattyLynn Gossman Fall is in the air, winter is fast approaching. There is still one more American tradition that is just around the corner before winter sets in, Thanksgiving. Impress your friends and family with your new savvy skills after going through our fun short guide. -Long Forgotten Old Fashioned Manners -Tips for the Hostess -Tips for being an Amazing Guest
We sit down to a table crowded with the traditional foods of the holiday, and some new recipes from the blending of families. It promises to be a wonderful day of conversations, games, relaxation and shouting for our favorite football team. From the first thanksgiving at Plymouth Plantation, this day has been about everyone coming together, bringing food to contribute, putting aside differences, and being grateful for the blessings of friendship, life and God‌ gathering, generosity and gratitude.
Good Old-Fashioned Manners We have all heard of the Thanksgiving tragedies…and I am not talking about the exploding turkey in peanut oil, or the undercooked cranberry sauce. SomeHmes Thanksgiving can be a burden because, in our zeal for fellowship, we forget the basic guidelines of gathering together. I believe these guidelines are all about The Golden Rule: Treat others the way you want to be treated. Through the years these guidelines have been called many things, etiquette, manners, rules, protocols, you get the picture. I would like to highlight a few of these, keeping the focus on our friends and families. PLUS as a BONUS, I have a few tips for hostesses and guests that you can use on Thanksgiving to make the holiday more enjoyable for everyone around you.
Basic Table Manners 101 Table etiquette is a great place to start our etiquette journey. It’s very important with a large meal to have some guidelines. After all, if everyone did their own thing, table anarchy would ensue, food would be going every-which-way, and you would be left with mashed potatoes but no gravy, and way too many green beans. 1. Keep those elbows off the table. Can you hear your mother’s voice? Turns out she was right. 2. Pass food in the same direction, to the right or to the left; just pick one-you’ve got this. 3. Take small bites; finish chewing before you speak. Also known as “don’t talk with your mouth full”. Covering your mouth-full of food while talking doesn’t really cut it either! 4. Try to Include everyone in the table conversation. Monopolizing the conversation isn’t cute; ask questions of others, listen and respond. Keep it pleasant, this is not the day for hurtful debate. 5. Here’s one that will set you apart: In the past, at a meal you would wait until everyone was served and wouldn’t eat until the hostess had taken the first bite. Nowadays, food is often served buffet style and guests are urged to begin eating as soon as they get their plateful-so it’s still hot! This is fine, but a considerate guest will keep an eye on her hostess: Does she need help in the kitchen refilling or serving so she can get to her plate while it’s still hot too? 6. Don’t allow phones at the table. Connect with one another. Look at each other. Most of us don’t get enough family time with our busy schedules, so make the most of it!
Tips for the Hostess: POTLUCK MEAL : Don’t let hosting The Big Day steal your joy! Hopefully you are hosting because you love it. T h e r e a r e a l o t o f responsibilities. Let your family and guests help. It’s perfectly acceptable to ask everyone to bring a dish.
Let Go of the Pinterest Perfection: Let your Aunt bring her favorite style of potatoes…Yes darling, even if it’s broiled red potatoes instead of the classic Mashed. Let go of the reins a little bit. It’s just dinner! Keep the focus on relationships.
Clean House: Of course, I know you want to clean your house before your party, but don’t stress it! Get it clean enough. Could you ask a family member for help or hire someone to help with your least favorite chore –bathrooms? floors? After the meall, if you MUST do something, rinse and stack the dishes in the kitchen. Then enjoy your company. There is plenty of time tomorrow to do the dishes.
How to Be a Great Guest! Call your hostess: Offer to bring a dish!! Make her job easier and bring what she wants you to bring. If you are on a special diet?: Gluten Free? allergies? or Keto? Bring a dish or two that you can eat and share with others. Help your host with the work of the day: Clean up dishes, refill drinks, empty the trash. Many hands make light work. Once a little cleanup is completed then everyone, hostess included, can enjoy the company and conversation of the day. Bring your hostess a hostess gift: Of course, It’s not required, but it’s a kind gesture, acknowledging the hostesses time, energy, and resources, making this event special and beautiful. A thoughtful gift of any size will do. Get them something to make them smile. A nice note or gourmet item is just fine. Some other ideas include: soap, lotion, coffee, scarf, wine, chocolates, nuts, a gift card, house plant, or flowers.
