The restlessness of a dreamer

Always unsettled, his hands constantly on the move, eyes permanently on the wander, taking everything in, constantly thinking about what he has seen and experienced – that is the Gerald Bretterbauer I know. I have never seen him calm and relaxed. Everything he does, he does quickly, directly, with precision and incredible creativity. By the time the people around him have grasped, understood and processed the results of his working systems, he is already one step further on and often somewhere the observer would not expect.

He is uncompromising in his artistic work, has great aspirations. Once he has solved a problem to his own satisfaction, he loses interest in it – does not produce a series for an art market but immediately focuses on other things that interest and fascinate him.

Which is why the cycle “With my eyes closed” is all the more surprising and exciting. Over a period of almost four years (2005 to 2009), this unsettled spirit has started producing meditative, reduced and almost spiritual, self-contained works of incredible depth.

The starting point is the analysis of digital photographs that he enlarges until the only thing that remains are points of color devoid of any picture content. Calm, highly sensitive pictures in terms of color but nevertheless compositions full of suspense. No trace of the restlessness of the artist.

Sometimes monochrome expanses of color with an almost invisible structure. The structure of torn sandpaper is used as a counterpoint to the colored areas. The almost invisible structure in the colored areas is continued in the structure of the grains of sand.

Shape and space have suddenly become tangible. The observer is in a conflict between the compelling desire to touch and the knowledge of the damage that even the slightest mark in the delicately coordinated colored areas would cause.

In addition, the torn edge of the paper represents a linear component that is deliberately used, whether substantially or even not at all, depending on the direction of the tear.

In spite of the fact that the work initially appears to be abstract, it is also the specific reduction of the two areas of life in which the artist has found himself over the last two years – New York and Madeira. The cubic, geometric shapes of the city and the structures of solidified streams of lava on the island of Madeira. The dull grays of a fog-covered Central Park and the clear, vibrant colors of the summer light of Madeira. The rhythm of the music the artist listens to and feels as he works.

Die Rastlosigkeit eines Träumers

Ständig unruhig, die Hände immer in Bewegung, die Augen ständig überall umherschweifen, alles aufnehmend, sich ständig Gedanken über das Gesehene und Erlebte machend – so erlebe ich Gerald Bretterbauer. Noch nie habe ich ihn ruhig und entspannt gesehen. Dinge die er macht geschehen schnell, direkt, mit Präzision und unglaublicher Kreativität. Bis seine Umgebung die Ergebnisse seiner Arbeitsprozesse erfasst, verstanden und verarbeitet hat ist er schon wieder weiter und oft ganz wo anders, als der Betrachter es vermutet.

Kompromisslos ist er in seiner künstlerischen Arbeit, mit höchsten Ansprüchen. Hat er für sich ein Problem gelöst, interessiert er sich nicht mehr dafür – produziert keine Serien für einen Kunstmarkt, sondern wendet sich umgehend anderen Dingen zu die Ihn interessieren und faszinieren.

Umso erstaunlicher und spannungsreicher ist der Zyklus „With my eyes closed“. Plötzlich erleben wir von diesem unruhigem Geist, medidative, reduzierte und fast spirituell in sich selbst ruhende Arbeiten von unglaublicher Tiefe, die er in einem Zeitraum von fast 4 Jahren (2005 bis 2009) produziert hat Ausgangspunkt ist die Analyse digitaler Fotografien die er so lange vergrössert, bis nur noch Farbpunkte ohne jeden Bildinhalt entstehen. Ruhige, farblich hoch sensible aber doch spannungsgeladene Farbkompositionen. Kein Spur von der Rastlosigkeit des Künstlers. Manchmal monochrome Farbflächen mit fast unsichtbarer Struktur. Als Kontrapunkt zu den Farbflächen wird die Struktur des gerissenen Schmirgelpapers gesetzt. Die fast unsichtbare Struktur in den Farbflächen findet eine Fortsetzung in der Struktur des Sandkornes.

Plötzlich ist Form und Fläche auch fühlbar geworden. Der Betrachter kommt in den Zwiespalt des Wunsches das Blatt zu berühren und dem Wissen um den Schaden, den selbst der kleinste Fleck in den zart abgestuften Farbflächen anrichten würde.

Zusätzlich stellt die Risskante am Papier eine lineare Komponente dar, die bewusst je nach Rissrichtung stärker oder auch gar nicht eingesetzt wird.

Trotz der zunächst erscheinenden Abstraktheit der Arbeiten ist es doch auch die konkrete Reduzierung der zwei Lebensbereiche, in denen sich der Künstler in den zwei vergangenen Jahren aufgehalten hat. New York und Madeira. Die kubischen, geometrischen Formen der Stadt und die Strukturen erstarrter Lavaströme auf der Insel Madeira. Die dumpf grauen Farben des nebelverhangenen Central Parks und die klaren kräftigen Farben des Sommerlichtes von Madeira. Der Rhythmus der Musik, die der Künstler bei seiner Arbeit hört und spürt.
