City council takes leap of faith on mixed-use housing

A

development that could eventually mean as many as 140 new homes in Gallup will be allowed to proceed after protest from a handful of residents failed to sway the City Council to do otherwise.

As a result, the builder hopes to have the first few homes ready to move into by next spring or summer in what appears to be the first new housing development in Gallup since Mentmore went up in the 1990s.

The project will start with nine or 10 single family homes at the northern end of the property, said architect Ryan Stearns, who’s been shepherding the plan through the city process for more than two years.

“I’m still waiting for the phone call that tells me we’ve done somet h i ng w rong,” Stearns said the morning after the approval. “It’s a big relief. It allows us to start getting into the preliminary subdivision layout in the next couple of weeks.”

Businessman Eiad Sulieman had about 20 acres of land he owns rezoned as a mixed use neighborhood to open the path for his proposal. The MXN zone allows all types of housing – single family, townhomes and apartments – as well as commercial uses under 3,000 square feet.

The first home to be built will be for Suleiman and may be a little grander than the homes to follow, Stearns said.

That home will probably fit the $350,000 to $400,000 price range, while the first homes to sell will be two- or three-bedroom homes in the $250,000 to $300,000 price range.

Current plans call for nine or 10 homes across from Philipina Avenue, but with driveways on a new street to the south, Stearns said. Single family homes are also planned for the south side of that street, with 18 to 20 duplexes or townhomes going in on the next block to the south.

“If there is a need for more single family homes, we’re going to build more single family homes. If the duplexes and townhomes are better suited for the community we’re going to build more of those,” Stearns said.

The Planning Commission approved the zone change twice, on split votes both times. The commercial element didn’t sit well with a few residents. One couple, Bill and Jennifer Lee, filed an appeal that landed the question before the city council Sept. 13.

MXN is relatively new to Gallup and had previously only been applied to existing structures in areas where businesses and housing were already mixed.

That makes this project the canary in a citywide coalmine. If this project succeeds, Suleiman might be interested in buying more property to build more homes. That’s no comfort to Bill.

“There are large pieces of property in the Indian Hills, Mentmore, Mossman area,” Bill said. “Those landowners have asked me, ‘If this goes through, can we rezone ours to mixed use so that we can start to put businesses in there because we can’t get anybody to come in and to build homes?’”

The one thing everybody could agree on is that Gallup de s per a t ely ne e d s mor e housing.

When the city declared a housing emergency in May, there were 17 listings priced from $64,000 to $520,000 on the market in Gallup, Valentine said.

As of Sept. 10, there were just 13 houses, priced between $100,000 and $329,000, on the market.

“As you can see, the situation is not getting better,” Valentine said. “The longer we continue to wait, the more prices go up and the more inflation goes up, the more unattainable the single family unit becomes.”

With that as the starting point, four councilors (Mayor Louie Bonaguidi was absent) debated whether to affirm the new zoning or overturn it, which might have delayed or even killed the project.

Suleiman’s property sits south of Philipina Avenue and east of Strong Drive, adjacent to existing homes to the north and east. Some neighbors were afraid that businesses would start randomly popping up among homes, or that apartments would change the character of the neighborhood and might be allowed to deteriorate.

“I think there are some misconceptions about what we are proposing to build,” Stearns told the council. “We have no intent to build commercial space. We’re going to subdivide this thing. If someone wants to come and buy two lots, we can’t prevent what they build on that.

But we have no plan to build any commercial.”

Suleiman sought the MXN zoning because it’s the only option with the flexibility for all types of housing. Even apartments are a last resort to be built only if single family housing doesn’t sell.

“Apartments are really more of a last resort. We don’t want to

do them because we don’t want to manage them. We want to sell properties,” Stearns said.

Councilor Michael Schaaf, Dist. 2, was concerned about subsequent owners opening businesses.

“I have problems with the mixed use because they could put commercial in there once we approve it,” he said. “Or if the property is sold, the next person could put commercial in.”

Planning Director C.B. Strain said that would be difficult after subdividing.

“If they are going to go to the expense of subdividing it … that means they have to plat the lots, they have to run all the infrastructure – water sewer, electric, paved streets, all of that.

Once you do all of that, it would be very difficult to retrofit commercial uses in there [because] the lot sizes wouldn’t allow it,” he told the council. “Once that is set and you have all that money invested in it, it’s kind of hard to go back.”

Testifying in support of the project, Valentine noted that transients use the vacant property now, contributing to petty crime in the neighborhood.

Councilor Sarah Piano, Dist. 4, favors the housing but was also concerned about commercial. The property is in her district, so she’d be most likely to field constituent complaints as the project progresses. She voted for the project.

“We can’t jump ahead of ourselves and say ‘Let’s not do this because all these other things might happen.’ We’re living in a lot of what-ifs in this moment and that makes me nervous,” Piano said.

She also said she would be interested in adding a zone to the Land Standards that would

allow all types of housing without commercial for future projects.

“The big concern is commercial,” she said. “We are kind of living in the future of ‘what if.’ It’s hard to live in that place because nothing ever gets done.”

Councilor Fran Palochak, Dist. 4, was on board with few reservations.

“I’ve gone to many communities where you go and stop at your dental office or doctor’s office and it’s right there in a residential area. It’s not hurting anybody to be there. It’s nice,” Palochak said. “Even if you have a convenience store, that’s not a bad thing. It means your people don’t have to go all the way dowtown. [... A] lot of people like that.”

Her main concern was preserving the aesthetic quality of the neighborhood. “The homes in that area are beautiful,” she said. “We want to keep the neighborhood aesthetically beautiful. Can the city hold their feet to the fire?”

Strain and Stearns noted that the design phase will have to go to public hearings before the Planning Commission to ensure the homes meet design and quality standards.

Schaaf wasn’t convinced, and was ultimately the only vote against the MXN zoning. The council affirmed it on a 3-1 vote.

Bill said he’s prepared to live with the council’s decision.

“I am going to quietly support this housing project. I want to see homes built,” Bill said. “But I hope that they stick to what they have said and the land somewhere down the way doesn’t get sold because costs get high or this didn’t happen or this fell through or it became difficult.”

er man approached him and stabbed him with a knife.

On Sept. 10, around 4:30 am, Gallup Police Officer Elijah Bowman was dispatched to Premier Carwash, 1115 W. Hwy. 66, after someone was stabbed.

A caller told Metro Dispatch that her friend had been stabbed in the neck and the suspect, who was wearing a white long-sleeved shirt, had run off.

By the time Bowman arrived at the scene other officers already had the suspect, who

was identified as Fernando Largo, on the ground and in handcuffs.

According to Bowman’s report, the victim had a shirt covering up the cut on his neck when he met up with him. An ambulance arrived shortly after Bowman and medical personnel took care of the victim’s injury.

of Williams Acres and State Highway 118. Shirley said that the vehicle was coming back stolen, and that someone was moving inside the vehicle.

Deputy Brandon Salazar drove to the scene to help Shirley out.

While Salazar was driving to the location, Shirley told

him that the vehicle had begun to flee from him. According to Salazar’s report, Gallup Police Officers were able to deploy some spike str ips, wh ich stopped the vehicle when both the front and rear driver’s side tires were damaged.

Owen Barbone Sept. 2, 6:49 pm Aggravated DWI (Third) A Smith Lake man, Owen Barbone, 32, was pulled over for a license plate matter and ended up charged with his third DWI. McKinley County Deputy Brandon Salazar pulled over a silver GMC Yukon near the intersection of Ollieve and Third Avenue in Thoreau. The Yukon displayed the incorrect license plate that Metro Dispatch advised belonged to a 1978 Ford.

Salazar met the driver, Barbone, who did not provide his driver’s license and proper documentation for the vehicle.

Barone showed signs of intoxication as he spoke to Salazar, which the report detailed as slurred speech, bloodshot eyes, and smelling of alcohol.

After exiting the vehicle at Salazar’s command, Barbone was asked if he would perform the Standard Field Sobriety Tests. However, Ba rbone

repeatedly avoided Salazar’s questions and asked if he would receive an aggravated charge if he declined. Barbone was placed under arrest for driving under the influence.

A passenger inside the vehicle was released and allowed to walk to their nearby residence.

Salazar searched the vehicle and found two 24-oz. cans of an unspecified alcoholic beverage.

Barbone agreed to provide a breath sample and was transported to McKinley County Sheriff’s Office for the breath test. He posted samples of .20 and .21 before being transported to McKinley County Adult Detention Center and booked for aggravated DWI (third), driving with a suspended license, improper display of license plate, and no proof of insurance.

His pre-trial hearing is set for Oct. 5.

Lujan Grisham announces fi rst-ever tribal LEDA deal for Taos Pueblo Economic Development Center $2.5 MILLION LEDA INVESTMENT WILL CREATE 233 JOBS AT TAOS PUEBLO GATEWAY DEVELOPMENT Staff Reports

AOS PUEBLO, N.M. - Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham announced on Sept. 7 that the state is pledging assistance from its Local Economic Development Act infrastructure fund to the Taos Pueblo Heritage Center, an innovative partnership that will create jobs and expand economic security in Taos County.

The commitment of nearly $2.5 million from LEDA to support new infrastructure improvements is the fi rst such partnership with a Pueblo government under a new governor-led initiative to help communities make strategic investments in infrastructure.

The tribal-led development project is expected to create 233 jobs and help the Pueblo meet the needs of 130,000 annual visitors with less stress on residents and the historic village, which is the only Native

American Community designated both a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization World Heritage Site and a National Historic Landmark.

“I am incredibly proud to see the fi rst state-tribal LEDA deal across the finish line,” Lujan Grisham said. “This project will provide jobs and economic opportunity while celebrating and preserving the cultural heritage of the Pueblo.”

Taos Pueblo reacquired the 14-acre future site of the Heritage Center in 2018, which is in walking distance from the downtown Plaza on Paseo Del Pueblo Norte and within the Taos Pueblo Land Grant a nd the Pueblo’s or iginal homelands.

“Taos Pueblo is pleased to partner with the State of New Mexico and the Economic Development Department as the Pueblo expands and diversifies its economic footprint in

the Taos Valley,” Taos Pueblo Governor Clyde Romero Sr. said. “The Heritage Center will serve as the ‘gateway’ to Taos Pueblo as it welcomes visitors from around the globe and serves as an economic hub for Taos Pueblo artisans. The Pueblo will be able to share with visitors its rich history as told from the perspective of the Red Willow People.”

T he proper t y i ncludes a 14,469-square foot main house built in the 1930s and a 14,415-square foot museum that will be converted to an event center. A master plan envisions the property as a gateway to the historic community with a farmers’ market, restaurants, arts and crafts plaza, and two hotels. The design includes outdoor patios and garden spaces that will showcase Taos Pueblo art and agriculture.

New Omicron COVID-19 boosters offer enhanced protection Staff Reports

he New Mexico Department of Health recommends the use of the first booster vaccine designed specifically to protect against the original COVID-19 and the most common form of COVID-19 in New Mexico, the BA.5 Omicron subvariant.

Doses were expected to begin shipping and arriving at health care providers across New Mexico during the week of Sept. 5 “We’ve added another tool to help safeguard us against severe illness against COVID19,” David R. Scrase, M.D., acting DOH secretary, said. “The new booster was specifically designed to address Omicron

ANTA FE – The New Mexico Department of Health (DOH) Epidemiology and Response Division report provisional data show a small decline in the 2021 rate of suicide among youth, ages 5 to 18 years, compared to the year before.

It is a beginning in a what is expected to be a long-term collaborative effort with the New Mexico Human Services Department and community partners to address a nationwide problem of suicide death rates, which exceed national averages.

“Suicide prevention works.

It requires concerted effort of people properly equipped with training and resources.

We need to maintain focus on our ongoing efforts to fi x New Mexico’s broken mental healthcare system,” Department of Human Services Secretary and Acting Department of Health Secretary David R. Scrase, M.D., said.

In addition, the coalition’s First Responders Workgroup has secured a grant from a health care organization in the state to offer suicide prevention training across the state to first responders in rural communities. Meanwhile in Taos, the Veterans and Service Members Coalition Workgroup secured a grant to support veterans in their community as well.

DOH is continuing its efforts to partner and collaborate with governmental and non-governmental agencies to reduce New Mexico’s rate of suicide among all ages and population groups, recognizing it will take years

to reduce suicide rates across all ages.

While youth suicide rates appear to be trending downward, prov isional data of adult suicide rates in 2021 are showing an increase from 2020.

The extent to which the small increase in suicide rates in New Mexico adults 18 years and older in 2021 compared to 2020 reflect various emotional, physical, and fi nancial costs associated with the pandemic is not clear.

Suicide can be prevented in several ways, including: • People who are having thoughts of suicide feel relief after someone talks with them in a caring way.

The new vaccines replace previously authorized monovalent mRNA boosters (Pfi zer and Moderna) for people age 12 and older.

Following CDC guidance, DOH is no longer scheduling appointments for the Monovalent mRNA COVID-19 as a booster and individuals have been asked to wait until the new Omicron booster is available.

Nez joins Biden for the ceremonial signing of the Inflation Reduction Act Staff Reports

ASHINGTON, D.C. – Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez was at the White House in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 13 as he joined the U.S. President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, key cabinet members, and Congressional members for the ceremonial signing of the Inflation Reduction Act, which received final passage by Congress on Aug. 12.

The Act authorizes over $700 billion and addresses policies related to climate change, energy, taxes, and health care costs aimed at improving the country’s economy. For tribal nations, the new law provided funding to plan for and adapt to climate change, mitigate drought, support fisheries, and support for clean energy production and use.

“The Navajo Nation has a seat at the table with President Biden and his administration.

The American Rescue Plan Act delivered over $2 billion to the Navajo Nation, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is delivering millions more, and now the Inflation Reduction Act will help our people with drought mitigation, clean energy initiatives, lower prescription costs, and much more. We are making progress and moving forward with infrastructure development, cleaner energy development, and other areas that are critical to building our Nation and to bring more of our people home,” Nez said.

He thanked the federal government and the people who helped pass the act. “ We are very thankful to all of our federal partners including our congressional delegation,” Nez said.

Funding for tribal nations includes the following: • $272.5 million to Native communities for climate resilience and adaptation, including: • $25 million in targeted climate resilience funding to the Native Hawaiian community for the first time ever; • $12.5 million to mitigate drought impacts for Tribes; and • $10 million for tribal fish hatcheries; • $150 million for tribal home electrification • $75 million for loans to tribes for energy development; and • A tenfold increase (from $2 billion to $20 billion) in loan guarantees for Tribal energy development According to the White House, the Inflation Reduction Act delivers on President Biden’s prom ise to bu ild an economy that works for

into the store, Pratt appeared with his stick again. Pratt began following the victim around the store, twirling his stick around and threatening to kill her again.

The victim stated that Pratt’s eyes “were looking demonic” as he confronted her. The victim said she was afraid of Pratt, and that she was in fear for her life at the store and at the bar.

The victim said she started heading toward the store’s entrance, and that’s when she saw the security guard and

asked for his help.

While Romancito was getting the victim’s statement, fellow officers were searching around the area for Pratt, who the victim described as an African American man with dreadlocks wearing black sweatpants and a white or blue shirt.

Officer Francis Collins was able to locate Pratt near the St. Paul Baptist Church, 1121 W. Lincoln Ave. Romancito was actually near the church when Collins reported that she’d seen

Pratt, and she see him standing around with some other people.

According to her report, Romancito saw Pratt holding a long stick, which she believed he used while he was threatening the woman at the grocery store.

The officers approached Pratt, and when he was told that he was being arrested for aggravated assault, he started yelling, but officers were able to put handcuffs on him. His preliminary hearing was scheduled for Sept. 14.

According to his report, he did

notice a few drops of blood on the ground in front of the business.

Largo was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept. 21.

The allocation of officer recruitment funding follows Lujan Grisham delivering 16% raises for New Mexico State Police Officers earlier this year.

Over the course of her administration, the governor has dedicated $339 million

toward public safety capital outlay funding – more than twice the amount appropriated in the previous eight years. In addition,

the Lujan Grisham administration announced earlier this summer that the Department of Workforce Solutions is funding

training and equipment costs for 100 new officers throughout the state at no cost to local departments.

Recruitment Fund was spearheaded and secured by the governor in the 2022 legislative session, established in the House Bill 68 crime package and funded with $50 million in the budget to support the recruitment of new officers at local departments throughout the state.

Malerba oversees the newly established Office of Tribal and Native Affairs under the U.S. Treasury, which houses staff who are dedicated to communication with tribal nations and the hub for tribal policy. In addition to leading the Office of Tribal and Native Affairs, the Treasurer directly oversees the U.S. Mint, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, Fort Knox, and is a key liaison with the Federal Reserve. Malerba will also serve as a senior advisor to the Secretary of the

Treasury in the areas of community development and public engagement.

During their discussion, Nez spoke about financing options that would allow the Navajo Nation to construct new public safety facilities in the communities of Shiprock, N.M. and Window Rock, Ariz., which are in great need of new buildings due to safety concerns with the current ones. He also addressed the Navajo Nation’s progress in expending federal funds through the CARES Act, American Rescue Plan Act, and other forthcoming funds through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Inflation Reduction Act. The Navajo Nation Division of Economic Development announced the near completion of the Navajo Nation’s Small Business Credit Initiative application on Sept. 13. The U.S. Treasury allocated federal funds available through the State Small Business Credit Initiative under ARPA. The Nation has been developing a Navajo program to expand access to capital and financing for Navajo-owned small businesses. The program will establish greater economic sustainability by offering essential resources to Navajo-owned small businesses by creating new jobs and increasing economic opportunities.

hen a multitude of artists applied for the Guest Curated shows at gallupart123, Executive Director Rose Eason knew something had to be done in order to honor as many of the great artists as possible. That’s why she and the committee in charge of Guest Curated shows decided to do four shows with induvial artists, and then save a fifth show for multiple artists.

T h at ’s how “BeCau se” came to be. “BeCause” features five different artists, and each of them is exploring a social justice topic that is important to them.

When asked how art can play a role in social justice, Eason explained that it can open up a discussion about difficult topics.

“I think a r t is such a n incredible and unique vehicle for dialogue because it gets you thinking in different ways, it opens your eyes literally to different perspectives,”

of mediums to share their messages, including mixed media, paintings, sculptures, and even fashion pieces.

THE MMIW MOVEMENT Narbono Begay has been p e r s o n a l l y i m p a c t e d by the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Movement. Many of his friends and loved ones have gone missing or been murdered.

In an interview with the Sun, he said he hopes his paintings bring the issue into the light.

“I just want people (mainly females) to know about it.

To make this more known, because there are too many females out there who don’t know this is real, and they’re just walking around thinking that everything is okay,” Begay said. “I’m not trying to scare people; I just want people to know more.”

A lot of Begay’s paintings depict people being silenced in some way, and he said that’s a major issue when it comes to the situation Indigenous people are facing. He said the media often stays silent when an Indigenous person is missing or has been murdered.

“It’s not supposed to be known about,” Begay said.

Whitman said that alcoholism runs in his family, and it’s also something he sees in his job at the Octavia Fellin Public Library.

“And as far as the community goes, I feel that it’s ver y prevalent, especially now w ith the whole pa ndemic going on. Before the pa ndemic, we would look at individuals coming into the library intoxicated on a daily basis. Some of these individuals are regulars, so they would come in intoxicated ever y si ng le day,” Whitman said. “Occasionally they would be trouble and we would have to call security or the police.”

Whitman said that alcoholism is something that the people of Gallup have just become so used to now that they’ve become numb to the problem.

“I travel to the eastside of Gallup on my way home, and sometimes in the afternoons I see these people just walking, sitting around, just minding

their business, but also drinking as well. I feel like as a community we’ve become so desensitized to seeing this sort of stuff that we don’t address it,” Whitman said.

Whitman’s piece for the BeCause show is a mixed media display featuring oil paint, beer bottle caps, and cotton string. The piece is 7x4, and Whitman said it’s the biggest piece of artwork he’s ever created.

H e s a i d t h e m e s s a ge behind the painting is that people often don’t know the problems others are facing that may be leading them to drink.

“I guess the message I’m tr y ing to look for is ‘yes, we’ve become desensitized to people drinking, but we’re not truly aware of the problems that they face; whether it’s generational, whether it’s familial.’ Ever yone is having their own struggles, and although this is not a healthy way to deal with it, this is something that they’re doing to try and get through their past trauma,” Whitman said.

The ‘BeCause’ art show will be on display until Oct. 1.

While the opening scenes focus on Nanisca and set up the confl ict between the Dahomey and Oyo kingdoms, this story element is quickly put on the backburner. Instead, early sections of the film focus primarily

a strange tactic, given that the movie could have cultivated the subplot for far more suspense and drama had it waited to address it until the fi nale (or had just left it open to debate).

But, while some of the melodrama is delivered in an overly straightforward manner, the action certainly delivers and makes up for some of these issues. There are plenty of striking fight sequences and an elaborately staged battle as the intimidating characters get into conflict with the Oyo. Even young members of the team with slight builds get to show off and take down threats with dizzying spins and fast, powerful strikes.

Admittedly, the screenplay has some story issues and the movie delivers its message with a lack of subtlety. Additionally, history buffs will also take plenty of issue with the actual history of this region and what really transpired during this period. Still, “The Woman King” boasts some magnetic performances, as well as plenty of well-staged action scenes that will ultimately fascinate and entertain viewers.

This feature film from TriStar Pictures will premiere exclusively in movie theaters Sept. 16.

Loosely based on the history of the Dahomey Kingdom in West Africa during the early 19 th century, the new feature “The Woman King” presents some new narrative elements to audiences. Specifically, it details members of the Agojie, an all-female team of vigilant warriors who served to protect their kingdom and leaders. The feature suffers slightly from a jumbly story that juggles back and forth between two central characters, but ultimately works thanks to a charismatic cast and some impressive battle scenes.

General Nanisca (Viola Davis) is the fearsome and vigilant leader of the Agojie, who serve the Dahomey nation. Her primary role involves leading fighters into battle against the neighboring Oyo Empire, who are taking Dahomey prisoners and selling them to slave traders from Europe and the Americas. Despite advisors pleading that K ing Ghezo (John Boyega) reach a diplomatic compromise with their enemy, Nanisca’s unwavering commitment to fight causes tension between herself and other high-ranking officials.

In the meantime, 19-yearold Dahomey villager Nawi (Thuso Mbedu) refuses to participate in an arranged

on Nawi and her struggles and experiences training to be an Agojie. This actually turns out to be a positive, as Navi’s journey and her relationship with trainer Izogie is the highlight of the fi lm. Despite being drilled to be ruthless killers without a shred of emotion, the two characters ultimately open up to each other.

In particular, Izogie gives humorous advice and adds a dose of levity during the brutal process. The pair are captivating throughout and one actually ends up wishing that their relationship and story was the center of the entire fi lm.

In the second half, the focus shifts back to the conflict itself, the political maneuvering and Nanisca. This material is delivered in a far blunter and more predictable manner.

Naturally, Davis is powerful and compelling as the warrior general, but her personal journey ends up being an overly familiar one. A tormenting secret from her past is revealed, causing consternation and potentially changing a relationship. Surprisingly, the screenplay chooses to answer this burning question almost immediately after raising it. It’s

There’s certainly something of interest available for anyone looking for something new. So, if you can’t make it out to the movies this week or need to stay away from crowds, be sure to give one of these titles a try!

ABANDONED: A woman suffering from postpar tum depression decides to move to the country with her husband and infant. They pick a remote farmhouse… always a bad idea!

Soon after arriving, she begins witnessing strange apparitions.

Her psychological issues begin to intensify as the family starts experiencing more and more phenomena, leaving the lives of everyone, including their newborn, in grave danger.

The press was not impressed by this independent horror film.

A small number thought that while predictable, the lead performance kept them intrigued.

The rest complained that the characters weren’t fully developed or relatable and that the final product wasn’t compelling or tense. It stars Emma Roberts, John Gallagher Jr., Paul Schneider and Michael Shannon.

ELV IS: The life of legendar y rock and roll singer Elvis Presley is chronicled in this biopic from director Baz Luhrmann (“Moulin Rouge,” “The Great Gatsby”). While this version does detail many important moments from his life, it focuses primarily on the singer’s unusual relationship with manager Col. Tom Parker. In fact, the movie attempts to show how the performer was manipulated and controlled by his friend, which ultimately led to his downfall.

The movie received more positive write-ups than negative ones.

Roughly one quarter thought that the flamboyant visual style overshadowed the actual story, leaving the characters underdeveloped and adding a layer of phoniness to the proceedings. However, the majority were dazzled, describing the movie as an enjoyable spectacle about a larger-than-life musician. They also admired the lead performer, who they believed was a perfect embodiment of Elvis. It stars Austin Butler, Tom Hanks, Helen Thomson, Richard

WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING: Based on the bestselling novel by Delia Owens, t h i s p e r io d d ra ma /mys tery involves a young woman in North Carolina who is abandoned by her family and decides to raise herself in the marshes outside of town. Despite isolating herself, she manages to find two suitors vying for her affection. So, when one of the men with ties to the reclusive lady is discovered dead, she becomes the prime suspect in his murder.

Unfortunately, this effort wasn’t very well received by the press. A small number described it as a well-shot, entertaining and slick adaptation of the novel with solid performances. Alas, the majority stated the movie wasn’t nearly as engrossing as the book, calling it overly glossy, corny and uninvolving. They also said that it failed to deal with the story’s themes of poverty and abuse in a compelling manner.

Daisy Edgar-Jones, Taylor John Smith, Harris Dickinson, Garret Dillahunt, Michael Hyatt and David Strathairn headline the movie.

BL ASTS FROM THE PAST! And there are just as many older features receiving the high-definition treatment.

F irst off, this writer is impressed to see “Massacre at Central High” (1976) arriving on Blu-ray from Synapse Films.

This exploitation flick about a violent revolution within a California school became a cult sensation after “New York Times” critic Vincent Canby saw and praised the feature. He called it a sharp and edgy political and social metaphor. Many agreed, but the film fell out-of-print and has been hard to find for some time.

Synapse have spent a great deal of time remastering and restoring the film for Blu-ray. The disc arrives with a lengthy documentary on the production featuring interviews with crew and cast members (including Andrew Stevens, Derrel Maury, Robert Carradine and many more).

Additionally, it comes with a commentary track featuring interviews with those who appeared in the picture, as well as another audio track containing an interview with director Rene Daalder.

You’ll also get all sorts of publicity

materials like trailers, TV and radio spots, as well as still for the film. This Blu-ray is a real winner.

Kino is also delivering some impressive films on Blu-ray.

They include t he A r t hu r Kennedy/Peggy Dow wartime drama, “Bright Victory” (1951).

This film is being given a 2K restoration and comes with a movie critic commentary and trailers.

Paramount is delivering “The Addams Family” (1991) in a special 4K Ultra HD Steelbook package. It appears that no Blu-ray is included in this release.

T h a n k f u l l y, t h e 3 5 t h Anniversary edition of the Michael Douglas/Glenn Close thriller “Fatal Attraction” (1987) is a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray set with improved picture quality on both discs.

Not to be outdone, Shout!

Factory is prem ier i ng t he live-action/animation hybrid “Cool World” (1992) on Bluray. Directed

by Ralph Bakshi (“Fritz the Cat,” “American Pop”), the story follows a comic strip vamp who tries to woo her cartoonist creator so that she can cross over into the real world. It stars Gabriel Byrne, Kim Basinger and a young Brad Pitt. This “Collector’s Edition” features a 4K restoration of the film from the original camera negative, a retrospective featurette on the movie with Basinger, Bakshi and more, as well as some trailers.

The horror classic “The Fog” (1980) is arriving in a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray set. It includes new and improved image quality and all previously-released extras.

RMCHCS UPDATED VISITOR POLICIES Due to the recent downward trend of COVID-19 cases, RMCHCS has reinstated its visitor policy. The visitor policy supports two people per family member who have passed the coronavirus screening. Visitors must be 17 years old or older. Visitors must show documentation of COVID-19 vaccination.
