Cajaun Cleveland crowned Miss Gallup Intertribal Ceremonial Queen

ajaun Cleveland put a lot of work into preparing for the 100th Gallup Intertribal Ceremonial Queen pageant. Before the competition, she competed in the Navajo Technical University pageant in November and won. Less than a year later, she became the Ceremonial Queen on Aug. 10.

In an interview with the Sun, Clevela nd discussed what she had to do to prepa r e for t he Cer emon i a l Queen pageant. She said she went to ceremonies, talked to people in her community, along with former queens, a nd over a l l ju s t t r ied t o become more connected with her culture.

“I really had to put a lot of work in, because I had a lot of self-doubt and I couldn’t think about that. I gained self-confidence throughout this process and I began getting con nected cu ltu ra lly with myself,” Cleveland said.

“It brought out the best person in the world that I could be.”

Cleveland is from the Diné tribe, and her clans are The Towering House Clan, born for the Bitter Water People, her maternal grandparents a r e of t he Bl a ck S t r e a k Wood People, and her paternal grandparents are of the White Mountain Apache people. She was born in Gallup, and currently lives in Timber

Ridge.

She at t end s N T U a s a nursing student and wants to become a midwife nurse after graduation.

In her free time she competes in rodeos. When asked if she has a special talent, she mentioned that she is one of the only women she knows of who can actually trim the horses’ hooves.

“I also want to strongly encourage our youth to get connected with their cultural selves to make the best person out of them and to put their best foot forward every single day,” Cleveland said.

Cleveland said one of her favorite parts of the competition was getting to know the other girls in the competition in the week before.

“We made the best bonds and the best relationships, a nd a f t er t he coron at ion they just went back home to their ow n homesteads. […] They beca me my best f r ie nd s w it h i n a we ek ’s span,” Cleveland said.

The women competed in six different categories: traditional talent, traditional food, essay, photo, personality, and an interview.

Cleveland said the food competition was her favorite part of the pageant.

Melissa Sa nchez is the execut ive d i rector of t he Inter tr iba l Ceremonia l Office. Over the past couple of weeks since the pageant, she said she’s enjoyed getting to know Cleveland.

“Having gotten to know Cajaun better over the past few weeks, I feel she’s going to be a really great ambassador,” Sanchez said. “She’s familiar with the area, she’s familiar with the event. She truly does love her culture and she loves learning about it.”

Sa nchez sa id one of the things the judges look for when they’re picking a Ceremonia l Queen is that the woman has the potential to be a great a mba ssador for Indigenous people and a n abu nda nce of cu ltu ra l knowledge.

Clevel a nd s a id one of her goals as the Ceremonial Queen is to get people to come out to the next Gallup Intertribal Ceremonial. “It’s a really great event to attend, and I would only wish for more people to come out and exper ience this event a nd to really represent not only my Indigenous people but Indigenous people all over the United States […].”

Gallup Police Chief Franklin Boyd • The city will buy a new protective vest for each new employee who successfully completes their probationary period. The probationary period will begin as soon as the trainee graduates from the law enforcement academy; • The city will cover 80% of officers’ dental and vision insurance. The vision benefit is new and the dental is up from

60%; • A new subsection will grant full authority to any outside agency hired by the City/ Chief of Police for an internal affairs investigation, as if the agency were the in‐house investigator; • Adds a new provision to review and possibly negotiate for “economic issues” in March of the next two years.

Councilor Sarah Piano, Dist. 3, showed her support for the increased uniform allowance.

“I’m somewhat surprised at what you agreed on, but I won’t go into detail about that,” Piano said. “It’s great that you’re getting a clothing allowance increase. That’s super helpful and it sounds like you’re getting paid at the very beginning of the year instead of monthly or bi-weekly.”

Councilor Fran Palochak, Dist. 3, applauded the new agreement that allows the city and police department to review the contract every March, because it brings the annual review into line with the city’s budgeting calendar.

“I’m glad to see that we’ve reached some resolution, and I am glad to see that the language was changed to include discussion of any monetary increase before we decide the budget,” Palochak said. “It’s been kind of backward in the past.”

The next full contract negotiation will be in April 2025.

City to review event permit process WHEN DOES OUTREACH GO TOO FAR?

“We do want to work with The Door in the future. We want to be clear that this was a denial made based on the way the ordinance stands currently. We have to follow the legality of that and that is why

we denied it,” Councilor Sarah Piano, Dist. 3, said after the vote. “We would like to work with The Door and get your input. We would like to amend the ordinance as there are some unclear variables.”

I had just gotten home from a doctor’s appointment with my mother, who has cancer. I want to enjoy my night when I get home,” Maldonado said.

“I don’t want to hear people talking about their problems when I have to deal with some of my own problems.”

Ma ldonado went on to describe the sorts of testimonials she could hear during the event.

“There was testimony of rape, incest and people being abused. If there’s kids at the park, I don’t think they should be hearing that,” she said.

“As an educator that works at Stagecoach Elementar y School, my kids were at this park. I don’t appreciate them listening to that.”

Resident Marisa Hutchinson opposes future events at the park. Her main problems were parking and rowdy attendees disrupting the neighborhood.

“As they were walking to the park they were banging on my fence, agitating my dog.

I’m going out there and physically asking them to please stop. They’re looking at me like I’m crazy,” Hutchinson said. “If the event were to take place at Viro Circle Park, we would like the organizers to set some rules and take some action to prevent the repeat of those issues so that the residents and neighbors are not disturbed.”

A n n ich i a r ico s a id t he church would abide by any noise, crowd or parking rules the city imposes on future events, but, “I am concerned because we had to cancel eight events, and I am very concerned if serving hot dogs and showing a Billy Graham video to our community is called undue hardship,” he said.

Palochak testified in the city’s favor, so she recused herself from council discussion and voting. After about an hour in closed session, the other four council members voted to uphold the denial but ag reed to rev iew t he ordinance.

all it a draw: The Door Christian Fellowship Church won’t be holding any more events at small neighborhood parks this summer, and the city council plans to revise the city’s event permit ordinance to clarify the rules for future events.

At issue is how large and loud events at neighborhood parks can be. Most of the cit y’s 15 pa rks – Buba ny, Father Dunston, Golden Age, Hadden, Henrietta, Indian Hills, Mossman, Sk y City, Stagecoach and Viro Circle – are neighborhood parks.

Those parks are “designed for neighborhood-scale events, picnics and social events to serve the adjacent neighborhood,” City Manager Maryann Ustick said. Notably, they don’t have restroom facilities.

That leaves three larger pa rk s – Ford Ca nyon, Playground of Dreams and the sports complex – plus Courthouse Plaza, that the city says could accommodate The Door’s events.

Howe ver, T he D o or ’s A s si st a nt Pa stor Steven Annichiarico said that would impede the church’s mission and threatened legal action if The Door is denied permits for future events in neighborhood parks.

“We don’t want to be relegated to one side of town or one neighborhood, we want to make sure we are meeting the needs in the community of all people,” Annichiarico said during a public hearing on the church’s appeal at the city council meeting Aug. 23. “We perceive this sudden invoking of an obscure passage in an ordinance…this seems like a smokescreen for religious discrimination.”

The dispute arose after The Door had an event without a permit at Viro Circle Pa rk Ju ne 17. Neig hbor s compla ined to Distr ict 4 Councilor Fran Palochak, who confronted the event hosts at the park. Details

diverge from there depending on who’s telling the story, but people agree that nobody walked away satisfied.

Annichiarico, who claims per mits for neighborhood events have not been required i n the pa st, recently met with Ustick and Community Ser v ices Coordinator Ben Welch.

“During this meeting I was reassured that we would be able to hold events in various neighborhood parks if I would follow the permit process,” Annichiarico said.

Ustick explained permits have been required for about the last four and a half years.

The church had to seek special event permits and get food handler permits for events where they would cook food. One, at Father Dunston Pa rk, wa s approved; two, scheduled for Viro Circle and Bubany parks, were denied because they would cause “undue hardship” on the surrounding neighborhoods – a point the church disputed in its appeal.

The dozen or fewer neighborhood m i n i st r y event s every summer typically consist of “ser v ing a couple of dozen hot dogs, playing music, then playing a 20-minute Billy Graham video at the end…then a short message where we invite people to pray,” Annichiarico said.

Attendance is usually 30 to 45 people, but the June 17 event drew about 75 or 80, he said.

Residents testified that the event was noisy and included a band, as well as amplified personal testimonials about sensitive subjects in “graphic, vulgar and obscene language.”

Viro Circle resident Benina Maldonado said she arrived home at 8:15 pm to find two cars blocking her driveway.

When she spoke to the occupants, one told her to mind her own business and the other said, “F*ck off.” She called the police and went inside her home.

“The music was too loud.

We could not watch T V. I could not enjoy my evening.

Staff Reports MOTEL DAMAGE Gallup, Aug. 17 A man broke multiple glass doors at the local Super 8 Motel.

On Aug. 17, a r o u n d 9:30 am, Gallup Police Officer Cindy Roma ncito was disp a t c he d t o the Super 8 Motel at 1715 W. Hwy. 66 when the motel manager called in to complain that a man had damaged the property.

W hen R om a nc it o met with the motel manager, she explained that a man, who was later identified as Bryson Nelson, had come in and damaged a door and a window, and used the fi re extinguisher.

According to her report, Romancito noticed that a glass door had been shattered near the motel’s pool. The motel manager estimated that it would cost about $500 to fix the door, $200 to fi x a side window.

Next, the motel manager took Romancito down the hallway, where she noticed some type of chemical on the carpet. The fi re extinguisher box was empty, and the fire extinguisher was on the floor at the end of the hallway.

Another glass door was broken, and the manager once again estimated that it would cost $500 to fi x.

In Room #128 a dresser was tipped over, but after Romancito checked the dresser and TV that had been on top of it she determined that no damage had been done.

The manager said Nelson, 23, had been wearing a black cap and a red shirt around his neck. She said he was possibly Native. Romancito searched the area but was unable to find a man who met that description.

While she was searching the

area, Romancito got another call about two men walking around with some supposedly stolen items. While she was waiting for assistance with that call, she noticed a man meeting the manager’s description walking around.

Romancito approached the man and asked him to stop.

The man told Romancito he was heading to work. He originally gave Romancito a fake name, but when she was able to run some of the information he gave her through Metro Dispatch, they told her what his name really was.

Nelson told Romancito that the manager of the motel knew him, and when Romancito asked the manager, she said she did know him, and another employee identified Bryson as the one who had caused the damage to the motel.

Metro Dispatch told Romancito that Nelson had a warrant out for his arrest, so she arrested him for the warrant, along with criminal damage to property (over $1,000) and concealing his identity. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 31.

On Aug. 18 , a r ou nd 10 :3 0 a m , Gallup Police Officer Julio Yazzie was dispatched to Thunderbird Supply Co., 1907 W. Historic Hwy. 66, when a man broke into a vehicle and stole some items, including a wallet.

When Yazzie met with the victim, he explained that he’d

by McKinley County Sheriff’s Office, a check which led to the arrest of Sharon Peterson, 37, of Tse Bonito, N.M., for numerous charges including DWI with a child in her vehicle.

Metro Dispatch wa s advised of the vehicle located on Defiance Draw Road about two miles south of State Highway 264. Deputy Terence Willie traveled westbound to the scene and found a

vehicle matching the caller’s description turning onto State Highway 264 west. The vehicle had no license plate and was swerving across the road.

Willie pulled the vehicle over and conducted a traffic stop near mile marker 6.5.

Willie approached from the passenger side and saw a young child in the rear right seat before meeting the driver, Peterson, and asking her to exit the vehicle. As he spoke to her, Willie noted signs of intoxication including bloodshot eyes and a smell of alcohol on her person. Willie also saw two miniature shots of Fireball and a 16-oz. container of Bud Light on the floorboard.

Peterson told Willie she was traveling home from work and had consumed the alcohol in the containers in the vehicle about two hours prior to driving. She agreed to take the Standard Field Sobriety Tests, but performed poorly on each test. Peterson was placed under arrest and gave permission for her mother to pick up the child, who was unharmed, from the scene.

After receiving the breath test, Peterson was transported to the McKinley County Adult Detention Center and booked for aggravated DWI; no license,

Navajo Nation EPA still looking at the Capitol Operating Group oil spill Staff Reports

INDOW ROCK, ARIZ. – Capitol Operating Group, LLC experienced a release from a corroded pipeline between the salt water tank and an injection well, Navajo 7, located in Red Valley, Ariz. on the Navajo Nation on Aug. 7. The Capitol Group, the responsible party, reported that approximately 60 to 80 barrels of brine water were released. The brine water contained oil, brine, and saltwater. The release traveled over three miles through an unnamed drainage to the Standing Redrock Creek, a tributary to the San Juan River.

responded to the spill under different author ities. The Nava jo EPA Underground Injection Control was notified on Aug. 8. The Navajo EPA Surface and Groundwater Protection Department has been on-site assessing the spill and monitoring the clean-up of the Standing Redrock Creek.

N a v a j o N a t i o n E PA Executive Director Valinda Shirley has also been on-site daily to ensure an appropriate and facilitated response to the release from the responsible party, and ensuring the approach to the clean-up will not cause additional harm to the environment. On Aug. 11, at the request of the Navajo EPA, the U.S. EPA visited the site and issued a letter of federal interest to Capitol Operating Group.

they provide the highest level of remediation as a result of the spill that occurred,” Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez said.

The Capitol Group subcontractors and staff deployed absorbent mats throughout the Standing Redrock Creek to help absorb the oil. Any standing oil in the unnamed drainage has been removed.

The contaminated soil in the Standing Redrock Creek was collected into piles, shoveled into buckets or bags, and taken to a staging area to transport to a licensed facility.

The remediation is expected to continue for a while. The remaining workload includes addressing the replacement of the pipeline, treatment of the release site, continuing treatment of the unnamed drainage, and collecting of the contaminated soil in the creek bed. Berms and additional absorbent pads were placed throughout the creek to collect any runoff from the monsoon rains.

On Aug. 10, Navajo Nation Vice President Myron Lizer and Council Delegate Amber Kanazbah Crotty visited the spill site and met with community members to hear their concerns and help provide information. During his visit, Lizer reassured residents that the Navajo Nation EPA will continue their efforts to provide effective communication and services.

“Sadly, the Navajo Nation has a history of hazardous spills within our sacred communities where many families reside. This spill will be resolved with collaborative efforts with federal and state

agencies to clean, remediate and preserve the wildlife, grazing and farming areas along the creek. We are appreciative of the community members for alerting our office and agencies to be responsive to this situation. Through our prayers and strength as Diné people, we will continue to protect our livelihood and families,” Lizer said.

In 2004, there was a smaller release from a line near Well #88 on the Dine Bi Keyah field operation by the Mountain States Petroleum Corporation.

The spill traveled 1.5 miles down Standing Redrock Creek and an irrigation canal. The Navajo EPA issued a notice of violation to Mountain States Petroleum Corporation in June of 2004.

“The Navajo EPA and the Nez-L izer Ad m i n istrat ion share a profound commitment to ensure the responsible party remediate areas of Dine Bikeyah impacted by this spill. We are working with Mr. David Burns, CEO of the Capitol Operating Group, LLC to address the release.

Mr. Burns has been on-site to coordinate the clean-up since August 14, and accepts full responsibility for the spill,” Navajo Nation EPA Executive Director Valinda Shirley said.

Shirley said the Navajo Nation would continue to communicate with local residents about the oil spill situation.

AMERON, ARIZ. – Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez, Council Delegate Thomas Walker, Jr., and Cameron Chapter offi cials welcomed U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce Chairman Frank Pallone, Jr., D-N.J., and Arizona Congressman Tom O’Halleran, D-AZ, to Cameron, Ariz. to visit one of hundreds of abandoned uranium mine sites on the Navajo Nation on Aug. 18. The community of Cameron is located 48 miles north of Flagstaff, Ariz., in the western portion of the Navajo Nation.

Nez was also joined by Navajo Nation EPA Executive Director Valinda Shirley and Navajo Nation Washington Office Executive Director L a sh aw n a Tso. Ca meron Chapter President Charlie Smith, Jr., Vice President Candis Yazzie, and Legislative District Assistant Alicia Chee were also part of the discussion that focused on the federal EPA’s obligations to clean-up more than 500 abandoned uranium mines across the Navajo Nation.

“Progress is being made in the clean-up efforts and with the establishment of the fi rst cancer treatment center on the Navajo Nation in recent years, but more needs to happen to fully fund the cleanup of the remaining 305 uranium mine sites and to provide more support for health care services.

We have so many Navajo people who are challenged with health issues directly caused by uranium mining activities conducted by the federal government,” Nez said.

Nez thanked O’Halleran for his support.

“We appreciate Congressman O’Halleran for his continued support and for bringing Chairman Pallone to the Navajo Nation to speak with the people on the ground who deal with these issues on a daily basis,” Nez said.

Approximately 30 million tons of uranium ore were extracted from Navajo lands during mining operations from 1944 to 1986 to support America’s nuclear activities

such as the U.S. Military’s Manhattan Project, World War II, and the Cold War. There are approximately 524 abandoned uranium mine sites on the Navajo Nation with 111 of them in the western region alone. The Navajo Nation EPA estimates that there could be far more. Unfortunately, only 219 of these sites have available funds for clean-up and remediation efforts, leaving a total of 305 unaddressed sites that pose severe environmental and health hazards to surrounding areas and people.

During the visit, the Navajo Nation EPA also led a site visit to two abandoned mines near the Cameron Chapter House, where generations of Navajo families continue to reside in nearby homes. Shirley recommended that a comprehensive health study should be completed to show how extensive the health impacts are, to address regulatory reforms, and commit more funding for clean-ups.

Last September, Nez and O’Halleran also welcomed U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Michael S. Regan to Cameron to visit uranium sites and to hear from local leaders and residents.

This time around, O’Halleran said he was glad he brought Pallone along with him to see the abandoned uranium mines.

“I w a s g l a d t o br i n g Chairman Pallone with me to sit down with President Nez, Navajo EPA officials, and Cameron leadership to discuss abandoned uranium mines and what the federal government must do. These mines directly affect the health and safety of Navajo families and they are the federal government’s responsibility to clean up. As the Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, Chairman Pallone’s fi rsthand experience on this will be hugely effective in elevating this issue in Washington. I look forward to continued work with President Nez and Navajo leadership on this issue; we need to get this done,” O’Halleran said.

This industry has been on the frontlines of the climate crisis, wrestling with extreme weather conditions that have greatly impacted their ability to care for livestock and maintain their crops,” Luján said. “That’s why this discussion is so critical in understanding what this legislation does well and how it can be strengthened to address New Mexicans’ important concerns like nutrition access.”

Luján promised to work with his colleagues in Washington D.C. to draft legislation that would support New Mexico’s needs.

“As negotiations for the Farm Bill reauthorization are quickly approaching, I will carry these conversations with me to Washington and work with my colleagues to draft legislation that makes a significant investment in agricultural, nutrition, and conservation needs in New Mexico,” Luján said.

Table Top Telephone receives funding for network upgrades

JO, ARIZ. – Table Top Telephone has been awarded funding to improve its rural infrastructure. This award will assist in Table Top’s mission of delivering quality communications solutions by moving its customers from a copper-based network to a fiber-optic connection.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has awarded a $3.7 million grant to Table Top through the ReConnect III program. This program offers

funding to facilitate long-term development and opportunities in rural A merica that don’t have sufficient access to broadband. The project will deploy 43.5 miles of fi ber-tothe-premise technology to 179 locations in Apache County.

Table Top’s parent company in California, Ponderosa, also received a ReConnect III award. The $6.4 million grant and $6.4 million loan will fund 63.7 miles of fi ber internet to

KICKING AND SCREAMING Gallup, Aug. 20 A man from Phoenix stole two bottles of vodka from A lber tsons and then refused to tell officers his name. He even kicked one of the officers in the face.

Around 9:00 pm on Aug. 20, Gallup Police Officer Darius Johnson was dispatched to the Albertsons at 1702 E. Hwy. 66 when a man stole two bottles of alcohol from the store.

According to Johnson’s report, the man, who was later identified as Valyn Benally, was wearing black shorts and a gray shirt, and he was walking west towards Big Cheese Pizza, 1516 E. Hwy. 66.

Johnson drove by Earl’s Restaurant and made his way to the back, and that’s when he noticed Benally walking with an unknown woman.

Bena lly tr ied avoid ing Johnson by walking around to the front of the restaurant.

Johnson eventually had to start chasing after Benally on foot while telling him to stop running. While Johnson was

chasing him, Benally threw two bottles of vodka in opposite directions. As Johnson got closer to Benally, he noticed the man was wearing slippers.

Benally eventually fell, and Johnson was able to put him in handcuffs.

But Benally didn’t make it easy for Johnson; he kept pulling his hands away all while yelling that he “was not resisting.”

Benally told Johnson that he didn’t steal the vodka, but rather that the woman he’d been with had stolen them.

The woman, it appeared, had taken off and was nowhere to be found.

According to his report, Benally would not tell Johnson his name. Instead, he started arguing with the officer and spitting at him.

Multiple officers had to be called to help Johnson get Benally into his patrol car, and the man kept refusing to tell the officers his name.

While the officers were trying to get Benally in the patrol car, he started kicking them, and he actually ended up kicking Johnson in the face and a couple times in the chest.

The officers were able to put leg shackles and a spit mask on him.

The officers drove Benally to the Gallup Indian Medical Center, and when he was put into a room with medical staff, he became very irate and disorderly.

The situation got so bad that a doctor eventually told the medical staff to sedate Benally.

The medical staff were also unable to get Benally’s name.

After a medical clearance letter was obtained, they were finally able to learn his name.

Benally was charged with resisting, evading, or obstructing arrest, disorderly conduct, battery upon a peace officer, and concealing his identity.

His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 31.

Crain proceeded to lay down in the backseat and began kicking the door of the vehicle. He was eventually put into the back of a Public Service Officer van and transported to the McKinley County Adult Detention Center.

After a medical clearance, Crain was charged with trafficking a controlled substance and criminal damage to property (over $1,000). His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 31.

He said he noticed a hatchet in one of the men’s hands, and he said it belonged to him. The victim said he told the men ‘Hey man, I just want my stuff back”, and the man did give him the hatchet back.

According to the victim, when he went back to his vehicle, he noticed that his sisterin-law’s pink camouflage wallet was missing from his car. He said he tried to follow the two men but had no success. He told Yazzie that he last saw them going east on Barbara Avenue.

W h i le t he v ict i m wa s talking to Yazzie, the man’s father-in-law called him and told him that one of the men was at the Chapparral Mobile Home Pa rk. W hen Ya zzie arrived at the mobile home park, the victim’s father-in-law told him that the suspect who was wearing a black and white t-shirt, who was later identified as Elliot George, was sitting next to a trailer.

When Yazzie found George, 26, he was sitting in a chair underneath a tree. But as Yazzie approached him, George took off, running north on Eilson Street. Yazzie repeatedly told George to stop, but he kept running.

Yazzie ran through a business parking lot, and almost ran into a street sweeper. He then ran across Highway 66, jumping over the concrete barrier that separates the highway from the run-off ditch. He then made his way over the railroad tracks.

At this point Yazzie called for backup and told fellow officers to be on the lookout for George. Sgt. Matthew Graham found George in the perky on

When he got to the grocery store, he noticed a gray car parked near the ATM on the northeast side of the parking lot.

When he walked up to the car, Yazzie noticed a man who was passed out in the driver’s seat. The man, who was later identified as Donald Crain, woke up when Yazzie called out to him.

Accord i ng t o Ya z z ie’s report, once he woke up, Crain, 27, reached for the center console in the car and turned over some aluminum foil that had some burn marks on it.

Ya zzie a sked Cra i n to step out of the vehicle. Metro Dispatch informed Yazzie that Crain had warrants out for his arrest.

After Yazzie arrested Crain for his outstanding warrants, he searched him for any narcotics. While Yazzie was checking the left side of his body, Crain started to squirm, and Yazzie had to ask him to remain still.

According to Yazzie’s report, he believed that Crain was trying to prevent him from checking out his pockets.

Yazzie found a small silver container in Crain’s left pants pocket. When Yazzie opened the container, he found multiple blue pills inside.

Yazzie drove Crain to the Gallup Police Department, and once there Crain started to complain that Yazzie wasn’t helping him try to get out of jail. He then proceeded to throw himself face-first into the backseat of Yazzie’s patrol car.

Yazzie called an ambulance to check on Crain, but he would not cooperate with the EMTs and refused to be helped.

Yazzie eventually found George on Carver Street, with a new set of clothes on. He was now wearing black basketball shorts and a white t-shirt.

George was walking north on Carver Street, but once he noticed Yazzie he quickly turned around. He took off running, getting on to Maloney Avenue and heading east. With Graham’s help, Largo was able to fi nally take George down.

Once George was in handcuffs, Yazzie radioed into Metro Dispatch, and they told him that George had several warrants out for his arrest. As Yazzie was transporting him to the Gallup Police Department George began cussing the officer out and started kicking his police car door. In his report, Yazzie notes that he did damage to the door.

In his report Yazzie noted that George asked him if he would shoot him if he ran away. Yazzie told George that he would tase him.

George was charged with burglary of a vehicle, criminal damage to property (over $1,000), larceny ($250 or less) and five counts of resisting, evading, or obstructing arrest.

His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 31.

Monkeypox: What is it?

Get Tested: If you have a rash that looks like monkeypox, get tested right away. Tests are becoming more widely available in healthcare settings and can also be done at DOH Public Health Offices. Monkeypox testing is free, and you do not need to have an ID or insurance. If you test positive for monkeypox and are eligible for treatment, your provider will also be able to get you access to free treatment through the DOH.

Get Vaccines If Eligible: If you have been exposed or are at high risk for monkeypox, a free monkeypox vaccine is available.

Based on CDC recommendations, the vaccine is currently being given to people who have been exposed to monkeypox as well as those who are at high risk of getting monkeypox. The vaccine has few side effects other than pain at the injection site.

We have seen impacted communities protect themselves, their sexual partners, and people in their households by registering for the vaccine. So far more than 1,000 people in New Mexico have already chosen to reduce their risk and have received their first of two shots.

onkeypox is a rare disease caused by the monkeypox virus, which is in the same family of viruses that cause smallpox but is much milder. There are currently 22 cases in the state, over 15,000 nationwide, and over 43,000 globally. Like any new disease impacting our state, we at the New Mexico Department of Health want to separate fact from fiction so residents can make informed choices to protect themselves.

Symptoms can include fever, chills, headache, muscle aches and backache, tiredness, and swollen lymph nodes. The best indicator that this is not another infection is a rash that can look like pimples or blisters that appear on the face, inside the mouth, and other parts of the body like hands, feet, chest, genitals, or anus. Some people get the rash before symptoms, or just the rash. While there have not been any deaths in the U.S., monkeypox is still something we need to avoid and prevent.

Monkeypox is spread from person to person through close, personal, and often skin-to-skin contact with the infectious rash, scabs, or body fluids. It can also be spread through respiratory secretions during prolonged faceto-face contact or during intimate physical contact like kissing, cuddling, and sex. Anyone in close, personal contact with a person infected with monkeypox can get it and should take steps to protect themselves.

While monkeypox is spreading throughout the U.S., we should remember that the risk of getting monkeypox for most people is low, and we do not have to be wiping down our groceries or doorknobs, like we did at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Some have noted a lot of early cases among gay and bisexual men, but we have seen before that infectious diseases move among populations.

Since we know that the highest risk is through close, personal contact including intimate and

sexual activities, we can all take precautions.

Since our case numbers are low right now, we have an opportunity to help prevent the spread of monkeypox as a community.

There are three ways to prevent the spread: Prevention Behaviors: Since monkeypox is primarily spread by contact, you have to come into either close physical contact with the monkeypox lesions or with items that touched the monkeypox lesions.

Therefore, ways to avoid getting monkeypox include: 1) Avoiding skin-to-skin contact with people who have a rash that looks like monkeypox, 2) Avoiding contact with objects and materials that a person with monkeypox has used, and 3) Washing your hands often with soap and water or alcohol-based hand sanitizer, especially before eating or touching your face.

I feel the simplest way to explain what an annuity is and why they play a significant role in any well-laid retirement plan is analogous to building a house. What is the fi rst and most important part of a new home? It’s the foundation, of

course!

The foundation is the fi rst part of the home to be built.

It is the bedrock and basis for the actual home that will be anchored to it. The foundation provides the crucial stability that this new home will rely on to stay anchored and not easily fall apart.

We all know that the foundation is not the most attractive part of the house, but it is of great importance to its future. Without a great, wellbuilt foundation, the house will be susceptible to future threats like the weather.

L et’s compa re t h i s to annuities when it comes to a

retirement plan. Let’s say that your retirement plan is just like the new house being built. You would require that your retirement plan has a rock-solid foundation, correct? The annuity is your financial foundation.

An annuity anchor is an anchor to the retirement plan, just as a house foundation is an anchor to a new home.

Most people I talk to have a fi nancial advisor or stockbroker giving them advice. Very few of these people actually have a solid foundation on which to anchor their retirement plan. In many situations, many retirement plans have no foundation and are very

susceptible to market storms and stock market crashes.

Unfortunately, many retirement plans rely on risky investments to reach their goals without a solid foundation. An annuity will provide that solid foundation, and I recommend my clients place enough money into a guaranteed annuity plan to provide them security in case of market storms.

The other factor is many people misunderstand annuities; annuities have come a long way since they were fi rst introduced way back in 1812.

Modern-day annuities can capture the upside of the markets, lock in those gains for life, and give you an income stream you cannot outlive! Can your risky investments do that?

Don’t risk your financial house by building your plan absent a solid foundation. I recommend my clients use approximately 30% of their retirement funds to fund a guaranteed annuity that will grow only when the markets grow and never lose money when the markets crash.

This is the defi nition of an annuity; safe, solid, secure, and necessary for any retirement plan.

ew Mexico has dropped back to 50th for child well-being in the national 2022 KIDS COUNT Data Book rankings, although this ranking isn’t comparable to our 49th ranking last year. Still, everyone is likely feeling disheartened by this news. However, even though we are ranked last, our state has made incredible long-term progress in improving child well-being, and we can continue to make progress if we put kids at the heart of New Mexico’s future policy decisions.

Despite New Mexico’s ranking, we have seen real improvements in child well-being over the last decade. New Mexico has improved in 11 of the 16 indicators tracked by KIDS COUNT.

The rate of children in New Mexico without health insurance was cut almost in half and, at 6%, only lags the national rate by one percentage point. The percentage of high school students not graduating on time has improved from 37% to 25%. The decline in teen birth rates is especially impressive, improving precipitously from

53 in 1,000 teen girls to 22 per 1,000.

Of course, there are places where New Mexico continues to fall short. Both New Mexico’s child and teen death rate and the percentage of teens who are overweight and obese have increased. These increases may be connected to pandemic-induced increases in childhood anxiety and depression as families faced significant economic uncertainty and health fears.

In 2020, nearly 13% of New Mexico children and teens ages 3 to 17 experienced anxiety and depression compared to just over 11% in 2016. Although New Mexico children have a slightly higher rate of anxiety and depression than the national rate of 12%, we did see a smaller increase between 2016 and 2020 than did the rest of the country – meaning the gap between New Mexico and the nation is significantly smaller than it was

before the pandemic.

Of course, the data doesn’t tell the whole story. With much of the data being from 2019 or prior, they aren’t reflective of important policy changes New Mexico has made over the past several years such as the creation of the state child tax credit, increases in tax credits for parents earning low incomes, and a big expansion of child care assistance. The data also don’t reflect many of the strengths of our communities, such as our diversity and the resilience of our children and families.

Although the data does not tell the whole story, the KIDS COUNT indicators provide a helpful idea of how New Mexico kids are faring. The Data Book can help guide New Mexico lawmakers and leaders to keep our kids and families at the heart of policy decisions to further improve child well-being. Lawmakers can do this by

State lagging in child well-being, but we can move forward with heart bringing more equity into our tax code, supporting paid family medical leave, and continuing to make investments in education from cradle to career.

New Mexico voters can also take action by voting Yes on constitutional amendment #1 on the ballot in November. CA1 would draw down a small portion of the $26 billion Permanent School Fund in order to support high-quality early childhood care and education services – like home visiting and pre-kindergarten – and services for at-risk students.

A Yes vote on CA1 will increase sustainable funding to provide our youngest children with the best opportunities to succeed as they learn and grow. With focus and longterm commitment, New Mexico can continue to create lasting improvements in child well-being to make our state a better place to be a kid.

Journalists are important to the nation’s democracy

lengthy lawsuit that accused a for mer gover nor of fa ili ng to relea se docu ments and denying the newspaper access to information provided to other outlets, violating the state constitution’s Free Press Provision.

As this lawsuit showed, it’s a dangerous precedent to let any public servant decide who is and is not a “legitimate” repor ter. Repor ters are the eyes and ears of the public. If they can be silenced by being denied access to events of public interest, the members of the public are the ultimate victims.

The gover nment or any of its representatives cannot and should not deny a particular reporter access to routine information such a s pre s s relea se s, med ia adv isor ies or other tools.

Nor should a campaign or government official deprive a particular media outlet of access to facilities or localities where other reporters routinely gather news.

This is not just an opinion, it’s the law. The Constitution recognizes the right (and duty) of the press to report all news.

A key to democracy is information and we live in an information age. Secrecy has the potential to corrupt any institution, public or private.

While NMFOG is reluctant to wade into any political fight because of our nonpartisan status, we cannot be silent about the recent effort to keep a reporter out of an event hosted by a gubernatorial campaign.

Some background - - on Aug. 13 in Carlsbad, N.M., the private security working the doors at a Mark Ronchetti for Governor campaign event prevented Shaun Griswold, a repor ter who works for Source NM, and other press access to the political rally on the basis of the content of their reporting. For the record, Mr. Griswold lists his occupation as “Reporter” on his federal income tax return.

‘Three Thousand Years of Longing’ leaves audience longing for a bit more

The career of director George Miller has involved many leaps from genre to genre.

Best known for the “Mad Max” series, he is also responsible for the “Babe” films, animated “Happy Feet” franchise and the medical drama “Lorenzo’s Oil.” His latest is another left turn, telling a fantastical tale of a woman who encounters a Djinn (which is a genie from Arabic mythology). Several recent movies have used this figure as a monster who terrorizes humans, but this movie takes a different approach to the subject matter. Part folklore tale, part dark comedy and part romance, “Three Thousand Years of Longing” is certainly audacious. It’s also a bit of a

mixed bag, but one that is consistently intriguing.

Reser ved loner Alithea Binnie (Tilda Swinton) is a renowned narratologist, or expert on written stories and the narrative structure used to tell them. While visiting the city of Istanbul on a speaking engagement, she begins having strange visions. Things get even more bizarre after purchasing a glass bottle that contains an actual Djinn (Idris Elba).

He appears and tells Binnie that she has been granted three wishes. When she uses them up, he will be freed from his glass prison. The suspicious but quizzical protagonist gets into a lengthy, humorous conversation with Djinn, informing him that in tales like these the wishes almost always backfire.

He tries to convince her otherwise, detailing his previous owners and how they failed when making their requests, as well as explaining the negative impact it had on his existence.

As they talk, a mutual attraction builds, adding further complications.

Much of the movie involves an extended back and forth between Binnie and the Djinn,

The stuffy Binnie’s reaction to interacting with a character she has always firmly believed to be fictional is very funny. Her pointed questions are equally winning to watch.

Additionally, the Djinn has plenty of comical moments as he tries to coax wishes out of Binnie, as well as catch up with what has occurred in the world since being bottled up.

The interplay between the two characters is engaging and it’s fun to see these two very different figures open up and develop

a close relationship.

And thankfully, the entire movie does not take place within a single location. As Djinn shares his tragic personal history, the movie delivers some phenomenal visuals. These segments that recount tales from earlier eras of wishes gone wrong are at times a wonder to behold.

Cinematographer John Seale (“Mad Max: Fury Road,” “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” “The English Patient”) employs impressive lighting and allows the camera to hurtle down hallways through incredible sets filled with odd individuals and strange sights (including a jarring monster or two).

These images alone keep one’s

attention.

Sadly, the climax of the movie feels a bit rushed and doesn’t deliver on an emotional level.

Part of the problem may have to do with the lead character herself. Binnie is amusing, but something of an eccentric who lives in her own head. In the end, her deepest desire has more to do with narrative mechanics and form as it relates to being a part of an epic fable.

So, while the film does manage to find an appropriate finale for the lead character and her unusual companion, her unique wants aren’t as immediately relatable and do not make for a soul-stirring or poignant close.

Having said that, the movie is plenty about the title that is fine. It doesn’t look like typical studio fare and is consistently wondrous to behold. The two leads are a treat to watch, as are the wild tales from the Djinn.

It’s an enjoyable movie that only really stumbles as it reaches its final act and strains to give its characters a stirring narrative close.

“Three Thousand Years of Longing” may ultimately leave one wishing for a bit more. It doesn’t successfully juggle all of its elements and the ending disappoints, but the movie still has a few winning moments and will provide fantasy film fans with a few bright spots along the way.

RMCHCS UPDATED VISITOR POLICIES

Due to the recent downward trend of COVID-19 cases, RMCHCS has reinstated its visitor policy.

The visitor policy supports two people per family member who have passed the coronavirus screening.

Visitors must be 17 years old or older. Visitors must show documentation of COVID-19 vaccination.

Visiting hours are Monday Sunday 4 pm - 8 pm.
