School board thanks legislators for support during 2020 session THE LATEST CHALLENGE WITH IMPACT AID

T

he battle for Impact A id rears its head throughout the year for many rural New Mexico schools, including Ga l lup - McK i n ley Cou nt y Schools.

The Second Session of the 54th New Mexico Legislature provided a prime opportunity for legislators to combat the effects of large amounts of aid being credited to the state by the federal government and handed out to larger, richer communities.

Senate Bill 198 a key bill per taining to Impact A id, awaits a decision in the Senate Education Committee. The GMCS Board of Education thanked local legislators for their efforts in fighting for Impact Aid during the board’s March 9 meeting.

The legislators present at the meeting spoke about their experiences with Impact Aid, as well as what their plans are going forward.

Sen. Clemente Sanchez, D-Grants, one of two sponsors for SB 198, spoke about Impact Aid as it pertains to the state’s economy, and how bills pertaining to Impact Aid could be line item vetos.

A line item veto allows a chief executive to reject particular provisions of a bill enacted by a legislature without vetoing the entire bill.

“We have to have a balanced budget, and right now we’re not balanced based on what’s happening in our local economy with oil [prices],” Sanchez said.

SB 198 protects the Impact Aid designated for smaller

school districts, such as the Ga l lup - McK i n ley Cou nt y School District, by preventing the state from re-distributing those funds elsewhere, such as in larger school districts, like Albuquerque.

Sanchez said he thinks this move can be done, and that other legislators will support it until it is fulfi lled.

“As long as I’m the legislature, I’m not going to give up,” Sanchez said. “Because it’s not right [for the state to take aid away].”

Rep. Eliseo Alcon, D-Milan, said he felt they had made strides in this ongoing effort during last year’s session.

“Last year was the fi rst year we finally made some progress,” Alcon said. “Both our senators, all our representatives, we got together and said we’re going to do this.”

Alcon said the biggest thing that happened last year was when they all got to meet the Speaker of the House at his office in Santa Fe and told him about their situation.

“We are strong enough where we should make a difference for our children in our school district,” Alcon said.

The Speaker of the House listened to them, Alcon continued, and he began working on a revised impact aid formula the local districts could work with.

“That’s a lot more money than I ever brought home before in all the years I’ve been fighting out there,” Alcon said.

McKinley County Fire Chief Jesus Morales attended the Gallup City Council’s March 10 meeting to discuss plans to prepare for the virus reaching McKinley County.

Morales had attended an emergency planning meeting earlier between numerous local medical office personnel and employers. This meeting was closed off to the media, so the Sun was not allowed entry.

“There was a lot of discussion,” Morales said. “There were several things I did take away, one being public information and education.”

This means telling people about prevention, or how to prevent themselves from contracting the virus, Morales said. He added sneezing and coughing are common ways for a virus to spread.

Morales said the second point of the meeting was logistics, where a lot of local agencies are coming together to plan a combined effort to combat the virus when it does arrive in New Mexico.

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham confirmed the first presumptive positive cases in New Mexico early March 11.

“It was good to see this is one of the biggest Emergency Planning Committee meetings I’ve been to,” Morales said.

“We usually have 4 or 5 members there, but today we had 50-plus. This was all agencies, stakeholders from hospitals, UNM-Gallup, the city police department, and the Navajo Nation. Everyone who would be involved in the community was there, sharing ideas and information.”

Morales wanted to assure the council and meeting attendees plans are in place.

“Our hospitals are ready,” Morales said. “They are screening people as we speak.”

Morales said.

Mayor Jackie McKinney said the governor held a conference call for all city mayors across New Mexico on March 9.

“They’re on top of it out there,” McKinney said. “I think we’re prepared to take care of our community.”

GREAT LEADERSHIP Richard F. Kontz, Executive Director, Gallup Housing Authority I have practiced financial and executive management for over 30 years. While I have a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Penn State University, that is not where I “learned the ropes”. Most of my learning came from the “school of hard knocks” and from continually reading good books on Management, Leadership and Teamwork. My dad [Rex T. Kontz, Sr.] practiced the principle of “CA-NEI”, which stands for “Continuous and Never-Ending Improvement”. He was always buying books and reading. I remember him telling me the only thing that holds us back is the lack of knowledge. [When he said “us” he was referring to people living on the Navajo reservation] He said if you can read and you exercise initiative and have some ambition you can learn anything. Then use that [the knowledge] to better yourself, to improve and to be productive [and successful] in life. That was his formula.

One good book on leadership I recommend is: Leadership Rules – 50 Timeless Lessons by Jo Owens.

She states: “It is not enough to have the right personal qualities to succeed as a leader. A good leader is also a skilled leader. Most leadership research [focuses] on asking leaders what makes great leaders. This is simply an exercise in flattery. But for real insight you need to interview their followers.” Why is that – what leaders think of themselves and what their followers think are often very different view-points.

The book indicates that after review of various studies conducted world-wide “the results of thousands of followers” are fairly consistent – followers want a leader who: • Has a clear VISION – this vision must be communicated in everyday language that all the people can understand and adopt as their own.

• Can MOTIVATE people – no one person can accomplish great things by themselves – they need a team and each team member needs to know what position they play and how to play that position at the highest level every day.

• Is DECISIVE – Leaders are expected by their followers to make the hard decisions and show them how it can be carried out. They set the direction.

• Handles CRISIS well – Leadership is easy when things are going well – it is often tested when times are hard. Great Leaders don’t panic, they always have back-up plans and options to solve the problem, and they instill hope when all appears loss.

• Has HONESTY AND INTEGRITY – people tend to gravitate to leaders who have these characteristics.

Above all else these are the main things people look for in great leaders.

In closing, we here in Gallup are in the election process to elect a new Mayor of Gallup. Two gentlemen are slated in a run-off election to be held on Tuesday, March 31st. I encourage all citizens and residents of Gallup to get out and vote. You determine who our “LEADER” will be for the next four years. It is all on you now.

City Council receives ofďŹ cial election results RUNOFF MAYORAL ELECTION SET FOR MARCH 31

T

he Gallup City Council heard the results of the Regular Municipal E le c t ion c a nv a s s during their March 10 meeting.

The canvass took place earlier March 10 before the McKinley County Board of Commissioners, who acted as the Canvassing Board in accordance with the State Election Code.

City Clerk Alfred Abeita said the results were in line with what was reported as the unofficial results on March 3.

This also means since mayoral frontrunner Sammy Chioda did not receive 40 percent of the vote, there will be a runoff election held between the two qualified candidates who received the highest number of votes cast for the office, in accordance with the City Charter.

The runoff election was made official through a resolution presented to the City Council as

specified in the City Charter.

Chioda and Louis Bonaguidi will have their names on the ballot for the runoff election on March 31. The runoff election will cost the city $28,000, which will come from the City Clerk’s election expense account.

The same voting convenience centers from the March 3 election will be utilized, and a five-day early voting period will be held from March 23-27 during regular business hours.

Absentee voting will begin as soon as possible, according to Abeita.

Abeita also spoke about the eligible voters for the runoff election. “The same registered voters from the March 3 election will be [eligible] for the March 31 election,� Abeita said.

Dist. 2 Councilor Allan Landavazo made one request to the motion, that they add an extra day for early voting on March 28 from 10 am - 6 pm. “We had an excellent turnout with the early Saturday

vote,� Landavazo said. “I’ve had a number of requests from folks to add Saturday to the early vote.

It’d give both candidates equal opportunity to have their supporters come out.� The resolution for the runoff election and the extra early voting day were approved with a 4-0 vote.

Other items discussed during the meeting: A budget adjustment of $715,130 from Fund Balance 507 for a contract with Bixby Electric, for alley electrical work from First Street to the

Couple, associates arrested for vicious murder Staff Reports

allup has seen some gruesome murders over the years but a case recently filed in state district court involving Adrianne Cellicion and Glen Lonkesion may be one of the worst in recent years.

It all began on Aug. 14, 2018 when James Svinareff

came by the Gallup Police Depa r t ment a nd s a id he wanted to report a homicide involving a man named Kale Holden that happened at a Gallup motel two or three weeks before.

Four suspects facing jail time for gas station robbery Staff Reports

F

our Native American men, three of them teenagers, are now facing up to 12 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to robbing a gas station store south of Gallup last April.

Armed with pistols, the robbery served them less than $50 in liquor.

The four - Julian Silversmith, his son, Aurelius Eddie, and two associates, Kevin Marquez and Karl Thompson - are now waiting to be sentenced by a federal judge in Albuquerque.

Although prosecuted in federal court, the investigation

A

LBUQUERQUE – James Christopher Benv ie, 45, of Albany, Minn., was convicted of false impersonation of a Border Patrol agent when a federal jury brought back a verdict of guilty March 3.

Benvie was a member of a group dressed in camoufl age and military-style clothing, with badges, masks, pistols and assault rifles who established what the FBI called a “camp” at the Southwest border in Doña

Ana County. He was considered a leader and spokesperson for the group, according to public court records and evidence at trial.

The U. S. Attorney’s Office of the District of New Mexico says Benvie misrepresented himself as a Border Patrol Agent when stopping immigrants he suspected of crossing into the U. S. illegally.

T he ev idence a t t r i a l showed Benvie and other group members stopped six women and children from El Salvador on April 15, 2019, without any

legitimate law enforcement authority. Benvie misrepresented himself as a Border Patrol agent and interrogated the immigrants before turning them over to actual Border Patrol agents. On April 17, 2019, Benvie stopped four adults and three children shortly after they crossed the border. Benvie ordered these immigrants to “stop” while misrepresenting himself as “Border Patrol.”

and it was reported he did not have proper clothing for the weather and might be without food and water.

The New Mexico State Police Helicopter, call sign ABLE 7, consisting of a pilot and two tactical fl ight officers, was launched to the area to locate the lost man.

At around 10 am, ABLE 7 located him in a wooded area about 15 miles northeast of Mount Taylor at an elevation of 8,500 feet. ABLE 7 safely landed and the crew loaded the motorcyclist onto the

Dean admitted to having had two shots before driving, but added he was not sure exactly when he had the shots.

Despite the fact he almost fell over when he exited his car, he agreed to take the standard field sobriety tests and failed. He agreed to take a breath alcohol test and when he was taken to the police station and told to sit, he missed the seat and had to be helped up.

He fi nally took the test and posted two samples of .23. He was also charged with driver’s license required, mandatory fi nancial responsibility, having an open container in a motor vehicle, and following too closely.

Dean was released on his own recognizance by a judge.

W hen he got there, he met Lisa Clark, 44, of Gallup, who said she was reaching back in her car for her bag when she went into the ditch.

Madrid said he could smell the odor of intoxicating liquor coming from the vehicle and asked her if she had been drinking. She admitted she had fi ve beers before driving. When asked if she was willing to take the standard field sobriety tests, she agreed a nd failed and was arrested for DWI. Madrid said he then asked her twice if she would take a breath alcohol test and she just remained silent which he took as a refusal. She was also charged with driv ing without a license.

She wa s relea sed on her own recognizance by a judge.

Cooley admitted he had been taking marijuana that night but didn’t know how much. He told Bowannie it was medical marijuana.

He agreed to take the standard field sobriety test which he failed. He was arrested for DWI. Bowannie asked him to consent to have blood drawn for a blood test which he agreed to do. After the blood was drawn, he was taken to the county jail and booked.

He was released on his own recognizance by a judge.

Weekly Police Activity Reports Staff Reports D O M E S T I C DISTURBANCE Gallup, March 8 Gallup Patrolman A a r o n Baldonado was dispatched to a residence on Linda Drive in reference to a female suspect throwing rocks at windows.

Baldonado made contact with the suspect, identified as Jessica Roanhorse, 28, of Flagstaff, Ariz., who began to walk away from the scene and became confrontational when Baldonado approached her. She appeared to have blood around her left eye, but did not answer when asked what happened to her.

After Baldonado was able to place Roanhorse in his unit, he made contact with the calling party, Marqual Lake, Roanhorse’s boyfriend.

Lake said Roanhorse had been drinking before she arrived at his residence and began to

argue with him. The argument began in the vehicle outside, but soon moved indoors, where Roanhorse yelled at and struck both Lake and his mother.

Roanhorse then left the house, which was when she was confronted by Baldonado.

She was transported to PHS Hospital for medical clearance and then to McKinley County Adult Detention Center where she was booked on battery charges.

She was released by a judge on March 9.

A RGU M EN T T U R NS PHYSICAL Gallup, March 6 A fight between a mother and her son on March 6 ended with the son being charged w it h a g g r a vated battery on a household member.

Ga l lup Pol ice O f f icer Michael Eley said he talked to Jerrilene Bennett who said she picked up her son, Sheldon Whitegoat, 28 of Gallup, earlier

in the evening. When they got to his house, she said she realized he was intoxicated.

This led to an argument and then an assault during which she said her son struck her 12 times on her face, arms and legs with a closed fist. He also forced her to the ground and wouldn’t let her leave.

At one point, she said he hit her in the head with a metal pipe and she may have passed out. She said she also heard him threaten to kill her if she reported the incidents to police.

Eley said when he went to talk to Whitegoat, he noticed he had blood on his face. There were also droplets of blood on the sidewalk in front of his apartment. He admitted drinking earlier in the evening and fighting with his mother but said she started it.

He was then arrested and transported to the county jail.

Whitegoat was released by a judge on March 9.

ABUSIVE PARENT Gallup, March 3 Gallup Police Officer Iris Martinez was dispatched to the Hillcrest Trailer Park on the 2400 block of East Aztec Avenue to investigate a report of child abuse.

When she got there, she met Edward Lee, who said h i s 14 -yea rold daughter had been told to leave the place she was living with her mother, Shannon Clark, 41, of Yatahey. He also said his daughter told him that Clark hit her as well.

The daughter told Martinez that she was sitting on the floor putting her brother’s stuff away when her mother came up to her and slapped her on her left cheek. She said her mother then told her to get out of her house.

Her mother also kicked her in the back and on her legs, she said.

She said she then called her father to pick her up.

W hen she i nter v iewed Clark, Martinez said she denied hitting her daughter. She said her children had been fighting.

She also denied telling her to leave the residence. She said she stayed in her room while her children were fighting.

Clark was arrested and charged with abuse of a child.

A $1,500 cash or surety bond was posted. She was released March 4.

When they got to her residence on Dani Drive about 5 am on March 5, they found the brother in the parking lot.

Gallup Police Officer Warren Bowannie said he placed the man in his unit and went to talk to Bahe.

When he went into the apartment, the fi rst thing he noticed, he said, were alcoholic beverage bottles in the trash and on the floor. Bahe asked where her brother was and was told he was being detained.

She then told Bowannnie that she did not want him arrested, but removed from her house. She said her brother had been there watching over her two children, both of whom were under the age of four.

B ow a n n ie s a id a s he spoke to Bahe, he noticed she kept swaying back and forth and repeating herself. When asked, she admitted she had been drinking. She agreed to take a portable breath test and after messing up her fi rst few attempts to give a sample because she was laughing, she was finally able to give a sample of .22.

Since she was in no condition to watch over her children, she was arrested and her brother agreed to watch the children.

Bahe was released by a judge on March 6.

Among those bills is Senate Bill 99 which authorizes public schools to grant diplomas to Viet Nam veterans who were honorably discharged and whose entry into the service prevented them from graduating from a N. M. high school.

Signed into law on March 6, the diploma can be awarded whether the veteran holds a high school equivalency credential or is deceased. SB

New Mexico announces sixth presumptive case of Covid-19 GOVERNOR MAKES UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS AVAILABLE TO COVID-19 FURLOUGHS

ANTA FE - The New Mexico Depar tment of Health announced a sixth state resident had tested as a presumptive positive for Covid-19.

The sixth case reported, is, according to the New Mexico Department of Health, that of a Santa Fe County woman in her fifties with known recent travel to Italy. She is at home in isolation.

The fifth case is a Bernalillo County woman in her forties.

The Department of Health is investigating a possible travel link. She is isolating at home.

state today was so essential.”

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, in consultation with leadership at the NMDOH issued enhanced public health advisory steps that New Mexicans should take to protect themselves, their families and New Mexico communities from the potential occurrence or spread of the disease in our state on March 11.

The governor and Department of Health urged New Mexicans to: Avoid large public gatherings, particularly if you are a high risk individual.

High-risk individuals are older adults and people who

have severe chronic medical conditions like heart, lung or kidney disease Avoid all non-essential travel to affected out-of-state areas and exercise extreme caution with all out-of-state travel.

Remain home (“self-isolate”) if you are sick and call the Department of Health at (855) 600-3453 if you are exhibiting any of the symptoms of COVID-19.

On March 6, the governor signed SB 136 into law. It allows the State Investment Council to raise the cap from 9 to 11 per cent on investments from the Severance Tax Permanent Fund into the state’s Private Equity Investment Program where it fi nds good opportunities. It targets startup companies with the potential for fast growth and job creation and has already invested in 73 companies which spend $42 million a year on goods and services in the state.

The governor hopes the measure will attract investment partners and expertise from outside the state. The bill was sponsored by Sen. Pete Campos, D-Colfax, Guadalupe, Harding, Mora, Quay, San Miguel and Taos, and passed the Senate 30-9 and the House of Representatives 66-1.

The bill has no impact on the larger Land Grant Permanent Fund.

You can speak out for birds BUT YOU MUST DO IT BY MARCH 19

T

he Migrator y Bird Treaty Act of 1918 has protected birds for 100 years. Protection stopped in 2017 when, two days before Christmas, the current administration “reinterpreted” the MBTA to protect birds only from intentional harm - that is, if the actual purpose of the activity is to kill a bird. If you stole a hawk egg, you could be prosecuted, but BP would have had no responsibility for the one million birds killed in the Deepwater Horizon disaster.

The U.S. Dept. of the Interior now asserts the MBTA was never intended to protect birds from

unintentional death, called “incidental take.” However, ordinary industrial activities kill 1-5 billion birds a year through incidental take, accounting for 99.9% of all bird mortality. For example, a flock of birds can mistake a tar pit for a pond. Netting over the pit can prevent that.

Now a proposed r u le would codify the reinterpretation, removing industry’s responsibility to do even that.

This is not “birds versus industry.” This is not a partisan issue (the late Senator John McCain was a birdwatcher and advocated for habitat restoration). MBTA does not stop

industry. In fact, a new proactive permit process has been recommended to be added to the MBTA for when industry can’t reasonably avoid bird deaths. Permit terms would include mitigation, habitat restoration, or conservation funding.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s own estimate is that 45 million birders in the U.S. spend $41 billion annually on bird-related activity. Some of this money is spent traveling to places like New Mexico and staying in hotels and eating in restaurants.

GAS STATION ROBBERY | FROM PAGE 10 that led to their arrest was handled by deputies and investigators for the McKinley County Sheriff’s Office.

According to Sheriff’s reports, three men entered the Mustang Store in Vanderwagen about 3:30 pm on April 18, 2019. Two of them were carrying pistols.

The three confronted customers and store staff. At least two shots were fi red into the air. While no one was injured, the report said all of the customers and clerks were terrified and fearful of being killed.

Within a couple of minutes, the three grabbed all of the liquor they could carry and ran out of the store. As they ran, they dropped several

By 4:30 pm, Sheriff’s investigators received the lead that led to the arrest of the four men.

One of the witnesses at the scene, identified as only L. L., told deputies that he had stopped at the store with his wife and two children, to buy some food.

He waited outside while the rest of his family entered the store.

As they entered the store,

he said he saw a ca r d r ive up and three young men get out and walk to the door of the store. As they pa ssed by, he said he Julian Silversmith hea rd t hem talk about robbing the store.

A minute after they entered the store, he said he heard gunfire and a minute later saw them run out of the store carrying liquor bottles in their arms. They ran to their vehicle and sped away.

The witness said he recognized the driver, who he identified as Julian Silversmith.

Deputies, with the assistance of Navajo police, arrested Silversmith and Eddie the next day. Eddie gave up the names of the other two men and within

a week, they were arrested.

A decision was made early on to turn the case over to federal authorities. Although the store was Karl Thompson not on the reservation, federal jurisdiction kicked in because the Mustang was owned by Giant, which had similar stores in Arizona and Colorado. The whiskey that was stolen was also produced out of state.

By August, all four men had pleaded guilty to interference with interstate commerce and brandishing a fi rearm during an act of violence.

Eddie, when interviewed after his arrest, said he had no idea why he got involved

with the robb e r y. T h e investigation revealed that Edd ie, who wa s 18, had been r a i sed by his strict grandmother Kevin Marquez and had only recently reunited with his father.

Federal agents learned that it was Silversmith’s idea to rob the store and, according to Thompson, he had to “pump up his son� to get him to agree to take part in the operation.

Eddie and Silversmith were transported to the U.S. Marshal.

Thompson was released on his own recognizance by a judge and transported to the U. S. Marshal and Marques was held on $1000 cash bond pending court.

So, if you can’t make it out to the movies this week, be sure to give one of these titles a try!

Big New Releases!

The Assent - This low-budget horror pict u re fol low s a priest who performed an exorcism that resulted in a child’s death.

After serving a three-year-sentence, the protagonist is released and tries to start living a quiet life. It isn’t long before another desperate family arrives on his doorstep and asks for his assistance, saying that their own boy is suffering from the same affliction.

The priest must decide whether or not to continue his practice.

There haven’t been many reviews yet for this little independent flick, but the ones that have popped up have been complimentary. One called it decent but unmemorable, but others recommended it for its performances and the story’s attempts to focus on its characters. It features Robert Kazinsky, Peter Jason and Florence Faivre.

Little Joe - This Englishlanguage European co-production combines eleme n t s of mystery, horror and science-fiction. It follows a woman who develops a new plant species.

She thinks she has found something truly remarkable after creating a crimson flower that, if properly cared for, will actually make its owner happy. The lead sneaks one out of the lab to give to her son, but soon learns that the plant may not be as benign as initially thought.

Overall, critics responded favorably to this picture. A small percentage did find the film too low-key a nd COMMUNITY

slow-moving for their tastes and felt that it could have done with more excitement.

Still, most appreciated the icy approach to the story, thought that it brought up some interesting points, and found its oddness compelling. It features Emily Beecham, Ben Whishaw and Kerry Fox. Recorder: T he Mar ion Stokes Project - Ever feel like you can’t possibly keep up with all of the med ia bei ng broadcast?

O ne wom a n decided to record every newscast being broadcast on TV. For 30 years, she recorded news programming 24 hours a day, filling some 70,000 VHS tapes. Her belief was that down the road, it would be important for future generations to see how events were reported.

Apparently, her obsession also infuriated her family. This documentary details her life and displays some of the stories she recorded over the years.

Critics greatly enjoyed the film.

While some admitted that the story itself might have been more interesting than what she recorded, almost everyone was fascinated by her efforts and most were quite taken by some of the more unusual events that would have been lost forever had they not been taped.

highlights how unregulated the art market is and exposes some the horrible actions taken by powerful and greedy profiteers in the art world.

T he Witch: Subversion - Also known as The Witch: Par t 1. T h e Subversion, this picture is a South Korean action f ilm about a high school student who has suffered from amnesia and can’t remember the early parts of her life.

However, after appearing on a local TV broadcast, strange figures start appearing and her history is slowly revealed.

This foreign-language effort was a big box office success in its homeland and it has been reported that sequels will be following in the near future. The movie also made an impression with reviewers.

While one or two thought it started so slowly that it ultimately lost them, everyone else called it a blast and suggested that the wild and frenetic fi nal act was fi lled with incredible action. Kim Da-mi, Park Heesoon, Jo Min-soo and Choi Woo-sik headline the feature.

Bombshell - Fox News is the setting for this biopic that details the indignities placed upon Fox journalists Megyn Kelly, Gretchen Carlson and Kayla Pospisil after they each

separately contact human resources, st at i ng t hat Fox President Roger A i le s sex ua l ly harassed them.

With their jobs at risk, the women are pressured by internal forces to keep quiet about their boss. Notices were very good for this drama.

A percentage did complain that the movie felt a bit by-the-numbers in its storytelling and could have done with a deeper analysis of sexism at the company.

However, the ma jor it y stated that the cast was exceptional and the make-up (which won an Academy Award) made the leads look identical to the real-life figures being portrayed. It stars Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, Margot Robbie, John Lithgow, Kate McKinnon and Connie Britton.

Charlie’s Angels - Inspired by the ‘70s TV-show about female private investigators (and also taking some pointers from the 2000 and 2003 movies that were also based on the property), the latest redux involves a new set of women. They are called into action after an employee at a private company blows the whistle on new technology being developed at the firm that could put the world in danger.

Unfortunately, the press was fairly muted and split over the latest edition. About half thought that it was entertaining and genuine in its efforts to empower the

film’s protagonists.

Unfortunately, just as many complained that the story was predictable and blandly presented, and that the fi lm had some contradictory messages.

The cast includes Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, Ella Balinska, Elizabeth Banks, Djimon Hounsou, Sam Clafl in and Patrick Stewart.

Inherit the Viper - Three siblings struggling to make ends meet decide that becoming opioid dealers is the best shot they have at making some cash. They try to avoid the violence that comes with their illegal profession, but fi nd the work environment difficult to manage after one deal goes south. When one of the three suddenly decides to leave the business, it creates even more danger as the other family members debate what to do about it. This crime/drama received mixed reviews.

A group thought that it was an effective feature, noting that the performances elevated the familiar material. Still, slightly more wrote that the cast couldn’t quite overcome the routine script and thought that it wouldn’t make a lasting impression. Josh Hartnett, Bruce Dern, Margarita Levieva, Chandler Riggs and Brad William Henke headline the feature.

There Are No Fakes - This Canadian documentary details a r t forger ies and the surprisi ng schemes uncovered by a musician (who is a member of t he ba nd Barenaked Ladies). He attempted to buy a painting by indigenous artist Norval Morrisseau from a reputable gallery. As you might have guessed, after some investigating, the buyer begins to suspect that the work is a fake and attempts to bring it to the attention of the gallery owner and Morrisseau family. According to the press up north, what follows is an incredible story filled with plenty of shocks.

Traveling exhibit is out of this world DESTINATION MOON: THE APOLLO 11 MISSION

bel ieve t h at t h i s nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth.” Those are the words of Pres. John F. Kennedy, 1961.

The Apollo 11 Mission took these words and made them real.

From Feb. 11, through March 11 the Children’s Library presented a special exhibition to bring that mission to space enthusiasts in Gallup.

Destination Moon: The Apollo 11 Mission was a poster exhibit of this extraordinary 953,054-mile voyage to the moon and back which met Pres. John F. Kennedy’s 1961 challenge of “landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth.” on July 24, 1969.

Tammi Moe, director of Octavia Fellin Public Library, said the Smithsonian traveling exhibit is unique in that it brings a little bit of the

Smithsonian to Gallup.

“These exhibits were created at the Smithsonian,” she said. “It was really successful and [they] made the content rich.”

Youth Services Librarian Ann Price, said the event was part of a Smithsonian

Castillo had about $97 of merchandise on his person, and did not have any

Castillo was arrested and booked for concealing identity and shoplifting.

He served three days and was released March 5.

The movie boasts an incredible supporting cast that features the likes of Jeff Bridges, Penelope Cruz, John Goodman, Jessica Lange, Luke Wilson, Angela Bassett, Steven Bauer, Bruce Dern, Ed Harris, Val Kilmer, Cheech Marin, Chris Penn, Giovanni Ribisi, Mickey Rourke, Christian Slater and Fred Ward.

It’s almost worth seeing just for the cast. The Blu-ray arrives with a new interview with Charles, a commentary track with the director, deleted scenes, a making-of and theatrical trailers.

“It has a lot of interesting amount of information on it and it helps promote the library on books pertaining to the space race as well as the Apollo Mission,” said Price.

“It’s been helpful putting those books into the hands of kids.”

K e v i n Reta na told deputies for the McKinley County Sheriff’s Office on March 1 that his ex-girlfriend, Angela Barker, 28, of Gamerco, had come by his house that day wanting to stay. When he refused, he said she began

hitting him on his face with her closed and open fi st.

He said she also threw rocks at two of his windows damaging them.

She was not at the scene when deputies arrived, but was arrested later and charged with criminal damage to property and battery on a household member.

Barker is being held at McK i n le y C o u n t y A d u l t Detention Center on a $200 cash only bond.
