Beauty in the Everyday ARTIST IRVING BAHE PAINTS THE BLESSINGS IN LIFE

W

hat we might call “dreary, rainy” or “too hot” days, Irving Bahe sees as beautiful inspirations for painting.

O r i g i n a l ly f r om T w i n Lakes, Bahe is a Diné artist who sees the extraordinary in the ordinary, whether good or bad. He’s painted everything he can get his hands on since he was a child, and he said, back then, he thought drawing came naturally to everyone.

He soon realized this wasn’t

the case.

“I thought everyone could draw, I didn’t know it was certain people that could draw,” he said, laughing. “After I realized that it wasn’t a natural thing for everyone, I soon realized it was a talent.”

People began to notice Bahe’s talent when he was young, and he received small awards even as a child in elementary school. That’s when his talent took off, he said.

Bahe credits his uncle, who he watched paint as a kid, for influencing him. Other influences in his artistic walk were Jim Abeita, Irving and Marvin

Youngest SITE exhibit artist hails from Gallup 24-YEAR-OLD RIEGE WEAVES THE WOMB EXPERIENCE Mia Rose Poris Sun Editor

I

n a city of quaint, adobe-clad architecture, and museums and galleries galore, SITE Santa Fe

stands out from the crowd.

Open since 1995, the landmark contemporary art organization, broadly known for its distinct and interactive exhibitions, won the prestigious Jeff Harnar architecture award this spring

for its striking and creative remodel.

So this is a big year for SITE, and it’s also a big year for Gallup native Eric-Paul Riege, who, like SITE Santa Fe, stands out in his own right

The series has received international acclaim, and the 2018 exhibit focuses on contemporary art from the Americas and features 23 artists from eight countries. Of these artists, only one hails from New Mexico. That one artist is Riege.

Half German and half Diné, Riege told the Sun he’s always felt like a “maker,” and his creative life began as a child. In fact, the 24-year-old said his work is a way of portraying his fascination with what it must be like to be in the womb.

“What does it feel like to be

in a sanctuary that provides nothing but life to me?” he asked. “I guess I want my work to provide that in some way to myself and others and I think it’s working, too.”

Indeed, Riege’s installation at SITE, as he puts it, “creates a home or womb that can be entered by the viewer.”

In this case, Riege said his looms act as gentle, soft, fragile and light walls and windows for “air and energy and life” to move through.

When asked when his artistic life began, Riege recalled a memory of weaving as a child.

“I’m not sure if this is an actual memory or a dream I had,” Riege said of a pink and brown weaving. “But either way, once I began weaving, my work began to exist entirely around that.”

As a kid, Riege said he was drawn toward yarn, fabric and paper — how these could be collaged or sculpted together. Now, place, warmth, connections, ties, bloodlines, life’s strands weave together in his work.

‘Venom’ emphasizes bizarre comedy over action RATING: ««« OUT OF «««« RUNNING TIME: 112 MINUTES

A

nother week, another superhero movie. At lea st, that’s what it feels like these days. For some time now, this reviewer has regularly complained about a certain sameness within what has been dubbed the “Marvel Universe.”

Admittedly, most are well made movies, but for a time, they have also felt like something coming off an assembly line.

The new flick Venom marks an exception. It’s a very odd duck and one that might even be considered a black sheep in the Marvel cinematic family.

For this reviewer, that’s nothing to be ashamed of.

Outcasts are often interesting even if they come across as a little, well, irregular.

It appears haphazard and imperfect, yet it also feels different from others of its ilk,

doing away with a few of the expected genre tropes and opting for a peculiar, comedic tone. This won’t necessarily go over well with all comic book fans, but thanks to an almost surreal central relationship (involving a man and his parasite), this reviewer found himself more intrigued and amused than expected.

The film begins with San Francisco journalist Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) experiencing the worst day of his life.

Over the span of a few hours, he’s fired by his employer for questioning the ethics of wealthy interview subject and Life Foundation president Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed). His aggressive questioning not only ends his job, but his personal relationship with girlfriend Anne (Michelle Williams).

Depre s sed, t he dow non-his-luck protagonist is contacted by one of Drake’s scientists, Dora Skirth (Jenny Slate), who claims the poor are being victimized by the corporate head in horrific experiments involving alien symbiotic organisms. One of these parasites attaches itself to Brock,

The film’s opening is a bit rushed.

There’s a strange montage or two in setting up Brock’s life and relationship with his girlfriend.

During the first act, the fast cuts even negatively affect the timing of a few verbal barbs.

However, when t he a l ien sludge finally meets new host Brock, the movie improves immensely.

promoting sinister impulses, as well as physical changes and an insatiable hunger. At times, it’s quite funny to see buddy movie tropes twisted through this very weird pairing.

Hardy makes for a very skilled comedian, using both physical humor alongside arguing with a disembodied voice.

The second act involves many entertaining segments featuring Brock wandering in a flop sweat and engaging in extremely bizarre behavior, to the shock of those around him.

He’s equally horrified by his own actions. In particular, by the parasite’s disturbing desire to chow on human heads.

It’s incredibly bizarre stuff, but the emphasis here is on dark comedy. And a strange thing happens as the movie progresses and the alien parasite opens up about itself... one actually starts to empathize with it.

At first, director Reuben Fleischer (Zombieland, 30 Minutes or Free) may have seemed an odd choice to helm a superhero flick, but it makes

sense after the comedic slant takes hold.

As more gooey creatures break free from their confines and cause havoc, infants and small, fluffy pets become dangerous lifeforms; it’s clear that this movie is on goofballs and the filmmaker is more interested in the silly than typical action movie beats.

As such, the film has a very unusual tone. Clearly, it wasn’t given the resources of bigger Marvel features and the climax also flies by a bit too quickly.

Still, there’s plenty of enjoyable insanity populating the middle of the movie.

Maybe I have a bizarre streak in me, but in the end, I appreciated its maniacal sense of humor. Venom is far afield from many superhero films out there and doesn’t take itself very seriously. While that may be off-putting to some, for this reviewer, the results were amusingly off-beat and intriguing.

‘The Sisters Brothers’ makes an impression with well-drawn characters RATING: ««« OUT OF «««« RUNNING TIME: 121 MINUTES

esterns are surely one of the biggest genre staples in cinema (certainly in this part of the world). There have been thousands upon thousands of tales of frontiersmen moving across the plains, fighting for everything from a slice of land and place to prosper, to revenge. That means there’s very little that hasn’t been seen before.

T h e S i st e r s B r ot h e r s attempts a different, more arthouse approach at the genre, taking the form of a character study and subverting some of the expectations of the Western formula.

Set during the Gold Rush of the 1850s, the two leads are

a pair of brutal, sharpshooter assassins and siblings, Eli Sisters (John C. Reilly) and Charlie (Joaquin Phoenix) who work for a wealthy commodore (Rutger Hauer).

When their employer tells them to hunt down chemist/ gold prospector Her mann Warm (Riz Ahmed), Charlie is only too happy to oblige. With another bounty hunter named John Morris (Jake Gyllenhaal) in pursuit, the pair race off through Oregon and California, firing on anyone who gets in their way.

However, older brother Eli begins to have doubts about the motivations of their boss and the assignment itself, bickering with his brother as they encounter their target.

While this movie may be the first English-language feature from French director Jacques Audiard (Dheepan), it still has a very low-key, European arthouse feel.

The action is brief and brutal, but not depicted as a

It’s almost as if the filmmaker quickly establishes that the leads are expert gunslingers and so the physical conflicts are presented in a quick and matter-of-fact manner. Instead, there is much more attention paid to small minutia and unusual character traits.

prepared to see a few things never witnessed before in a Western (including the horrific events that can befall a person while sleeping outdoors in the wild).

Thankfully, the director has an excellent cast to help him out. All of the actors involved are remarkable and the characters distinctive.

Morris makes for an interesting, cultured bounty hunter, while the sharp chemist has an interesting role as a thinker who must convince his chasers it would be easier and more profitable to help him with his formula rather than murder him for the bounty.

The relationship between the siblings is also interesting and detailed. Charlie is a simple brute ready to continue as a hired gun until his own demise. However, older brother Eli is a standout, seemingly obligated to help his

deeply troubled sibling while struggling to contain growing concerns for their future.

It’s great to see Reilly get a lead role and he is extremely enjoyable to watch. As mentioned, there are several layers present to this hit man. He’s far more resigned and communicates something of a tortured soul. The actor’s comic chops are expectedly put to great use, and he occasionally shows an unexpected open-mindedness. This involves sampling world cuisine and marveling at the mechanizations of a flushable toilet.

And there’s an extremely funny running gag involving Eli awkwardly teaching himself how to brush his own teeth and trying to connect with others through the process. The brothers wouldn’t be palatable at all without these amusingly unique comedic moments.

If you come into the movie expecting to see traditional gunfights and Western tropes, you will be disappointed by what you see. This film does not take a straightforward path or go where many will anticipate.

However, those willing to accept a subdued approach, including a focus primarily on characters instead of action may find enjoyment in the events depicted. Thanks to a great cast, well-drawn characters and unusual approach, The Sisters Brothers manages to stand apart from others of its ilk and make an impression.

ello, it’s time for another look at highlights coming your way on Blu-ray and DVD. It’s a very busy week with plenty of releases in a variety of genres. So if you can’t make it to the movies this week, be sure to give one of these titles a try!

BIG NEW RELEASES! T h e 12th Man - Based on a true story, this WWII drama made i n Nor way fol low s a n English team of saboteurs who set out to fight Nazi forces in Scandinavia. When their boat is sunk, one man manages to get away. However, he is forced to journey to safety through the rugged mountainous wilderness with enemy soldiers on his tail. Reviews for this picture were quite strong.

A few complained that it was a bit overdrawn and suffered from a weak opening act, but the vast majority called the movie a dynamic, thrilling and beautifully shot survival story.

Blood Fest - The next time you head out to a film festival, make sure you know exactly what you’ve signed up for. In this horror-comedy, a bunch of genre fans arrive for some screenings, only to discover that the host/programmer has a diabolical game in store for his movie-obsessed attendees. This independent feature earned decent notices. Some did criticize the picture for switching tones too much and overdoing it with movie references. However, more complimented it as a flawed but amusing, gory and spirited twist on the genre. The cast includes Robbie Kay, Jacob Batalon, Seychelle Gabriel, Tate Donovan and Zachary Levi.

Born Racer - This documentary goes inside the world of IndyCar racers. Apparently, the filmmakers have been given unprecedented access to the teams and drivers, focusing their cameras on four-time IndyCar world champion Scott GALLUP FUN!

Dixon and the Ganassi racing team. Viewers follow along behind the scenes as decisions and strategies are discussed, as well as interviews that attempt to show what compels the subject to compete in such a dangerous sport.

Breath - Set in the 1970s, this Australian coming-of-age drama follows two teenagers looking for adventure. They befriend an eccentric older man on the western coast who begins to teach them to surf.

The movie follows the group as they take to the water and experience the adrenaline rush of riding a wave. Reaction to this picture was generally positive. A few complained that it was too long and low-key for their liking, yet far more appreciated the lack of sentiment, found the sea footage stunning and the performances strong. It features Samson Coulter, Ben Spence, Simon Baker (who also directed the picture), Elizabeth Debicki and Richard Roxburgh.

The Catcher Was a Spy Here’s another WWII drama with ties to a real occurrence.

This time, the story follows a major league baseball player of Jewish descent who is also gay.

He’s recruited by the U.S. government to work as a spy. The new agent is sent behind enemy lines to stop a German scientist from creating the atomic bomb.

Alas, this title didn’t quite hit the target for reviewers. There were a few who believed that it worked reasonably well as a character study. However, the consensus was that the film lacked suspense and could have delved even deeper into the main character’s psyche. It stars Paul Rudd, Mark Strong, Sienna Miller, Jeff Daniels, Guy Pearce and Paul Giamatti.

Feral - The zombie genre gets another addition with this tale of a woman whose best friend has just been infected by a virus while camping.

Knowing it will turn the person into a cannibal maniac, the lead and friends must struggle with what to do, wondering whether or not they should simply put the victim out of her misery. Reaction to the indie film was fairly middling, with slightly more negative writeups than positive ones. Some thought that it was well-acted and told its story efficiently, but more criticized the plot as being strictly by-the-numbers,

following every genre trope and showing viewers little that was new.

T he First Purge - The four th entr y in the popular horror series The Purge is a prequel that deta ils the origins of the night of terror and the extremist government members that instituted it. As a test, the first event is scheduled in one location and the plot details a group of participants paid to take part. Critics were split on the latest entry in this franchise.

About half thought that the movie started well but faded quickly and didn’t deal with its timely themes as well as it could have. The remainder found the action to be effective, believed it had more ideas than many genre films and said that it worked well enough as a gritty B movie.

Leave No Trace - A father and daughter spend years living completely off the grid in the wilderness outside Portland,

Ore. After a series of unfortunate events, they are found by authorities and eventually put into social services. Naturally, the experience doesn’t agree with them; the pair escapes and attempt to find freedom outside society. This independent drama has not received a single negative review as of this writing. The film stars Ben Foster, Thomasin McKenzie, Jeff Korber and Dale Dickey.

T h e Mi san dr i st s - A n injured man on the run from the police stumbles onto the site of a school for wayward girls. There, he befriends two students who decide to hide him from the authorities and other members of their clique.

It isn’t long before the wounded gent discovers that not only is the locale cut -off from society, but is home to members of a quasi-terrorist Female Liberation Army. Response was all over the place for this quirky effort, although the consensus was positive. A few called it messily constructed and thought it failed to emulate the style of John Waters, but more found it campy and

utterly unique, mixing multiple genres and a bit of social commentary in a fascinating way.

Sicario: Day of the Soldado - This sequel to the Oscarnominated Sicario follows one of the most notable characters from the original film as he ventures further into the criminal underworld of drug-dealers and human traffickers. When U.S. federal agents assign him to escalate a war between different criminal factions, he complies but begins to question the job when he and a young girl are deemed expendable.

The film earned good, but not great write-ups from critics. All said it paled in. It stars Benicio Del Toro, Josh Brolin, Isabela Moner and Jeffrey Donovan.

Strangers on the Earth This documentary follows a cellist who decides to take part in one of Europe’s most popular religious pilgrimages,a hike to Camino de Santiago, where it is believed the remains of St. James are buried. Walking with his instrument, he encounters

UNM-Gallup student named Udall Scholar Staff Reports

h e Un i v e r s i t y o f New Mexico-Gallup recently announced that Cobin Willie, a level 2 nursing student, has been awarded the prestigious Udall Scholarship. Willie is the first UNM-Gallup student to have received this designation and is currently the only recipient from New Mexico for this academic year.

Willie, a member of the Navajo Nation from To’hajiilee, was selected from among 437 applicants representing 209 higher education institutions.

T he s c hol a r s h ip pr o gram, sponsored by the Udall Foundation, pays tribute to Morris Udall and Stewart Udall who spent their careers working on initiatives that impacted Native American self-governance, healthcare and environmental issues.

The application was both time and writing intensive, but Willie said he found it to be personally beneficial.

“I was initially intimidated by such heavy requirements,” he said. “The standards were very high but the blessing of the process was that it made me think about priorities and career goals. I initially was going into community paramedics but as a result of going through the application process I felt I was guided towards nursing and art therapy.”

“I was so impressed with what the senator had to say, I recorded his speech,” Willie said. “For the talent show part of the orientation, I played the intro of Senator Udall’s speech then started playing a song I composed over the lecture.

People were crying and seemed moved by my performance and many asked me to re-record it and email it to them.”

Willie said he was proud of his school and felt comfortable with the size of the campus and

the support he is receiving.

“I don’t feel like this would have happened to me anywhere else,” he said. “I loved representing a small school. As a student of UNM-Gallup, I was positioned right next to the student from Duke University. It was such a sense of pride and achievement for me.”

Although art and music play a pivotal role in Willie’s life, when he came to UNM-Gallup he said he had never had any formal training in either.

“I went to the Art Student Collective just for free pizza,” Willie said. “I thought you needed to be an art student.

I showed Ms. Wilson (adjunct instructor Kristi Wilson) some of the masks I made and she asked where I had gotten my training. I told her I’d never had any training.”

Lofty life goals and a passion for making a difference in the world continue pushing this student forward in all aspects of his life.

“I want to finish my ADN (associate degree in nursing) and BSN (bachelor’s degree in nursing) here in Gallup and then move to the main campus in Albuquerque to get a doctorate in nursing psychology,” Will said.

Willie, already an emergency medical technician, is also just a few credit hours away from

receiving an associate degree in emergency medical services, which is a credential he also intends to complete.

Willie said he plans to pursue a career in art therapy in order to remove the stigma surrounding mental illness, especially within Native American populations.

“Art can allow people to gather their thoughts and get mentally better,” he said.

He said he wants to help people develop the habit of turning to art exercises to deal with PTSD, anxiety or depression.

“Traditional therapy doesn’t always connect with Native American culture and can be difficult to obtain in rural

areas,” Willie said. “Getting a doctorate in nursing will allow me to help design treatment plans and improve quality of life for patients.”

Dr. James Malm, UNMGallup chief executive officer, extended congratulations to Willie.

“We are so proud of Cobin and his accomplishments,” he said. “He is a great success story and illustrates many of the reasons students thrive at UNM-Gallup. We will continue cheering him on as he achieves his educational and professional goals.”

ith a histor y of agricultural experimentation dating back to the 1930s and a storied tradition reaching into the depths of New Mexico’s territorial history, Los Poblanos Historic Inn & Organic Farm, 4803 Rio Grande Blvd NW in Los Ranchos de Albuquerque, has bridged the centuries and now, with the assistance of New Mexico

Ma nu factur ing Ex tension Par tnership, continues to preserve the past and pursue innovation.

T he la nd su r rou nd i ng Los Poblanos was, sometime around 1716, made a part of the Elena Gallegos Land Grant which surrounded and shaped what is now Albuquerque and was first mentioned in the 1790 Census as one of six settlements in Albuquerque’s North Valley.

According to Los Poblanos’ website, the original ranch was

owned by Abrosio and Juan Cristobal Armijo through the 19 th Century and most of the land was in the private hands of Albert and Ruth Simms by the 1930s.

The Simms enlisted storied New Mexico architect John Gaw Meem to design the original house, which is now a historic inn, and La Quinta, now a meeting and gathering space.

By the late 1990s, the land was under the ownership of Armin and Penny Rembe and their extended family, who

returned the fields to agricultural use while preserving open space and acequia irrigation practices.

Organic produce, organic lavender a nd honey bee s are raised, and the property hosts educational and business gatherings and serves as a historic inn with 50 guest rooms. Combined, the staff of 150 plays host to some 100,000 guests a yea r a nd turns out handmade organic lavender products that are sou g ht a f t er not on ly i n

American markets but overseas as well, according to Los Poblanos marketing manager Lauren Kemner.

“As a small-batch producer, we make six to seven products a day, and efficiency in making these products is paramount as we continue to grow,” Converse said. “In the past, one person would take a product and perform all the steps from beginning to end ... using NM MEP to do some training and coaching, we were able to empower our employees to design the way the work was done.”

“Using our soap wrapping processes and gift set building as bases for improvement, Andrea [Holling, an innovation director] from NM MEP, worked with the team using rapid improvement techniques to implement changes and see in real time what gains could be had with the suggested cha nges to the process,” Converse said.

resulted in a 25 to 50 percent reduction in the time required for the soap production process, according to Holling.

“We are very happy with the growth of the business and the expanded impact we’re able to have on the community — employing a growing amount of people while remaining rooted in our core values of preservation and sustainability, all while providing authentic and quality experiences with a story and strong sense of place,” Kemner said.

Los Poblanos is an example of the manufacturing that takes place in New Mexico and that will be on display during Manufacturing Day events scheduled for October.

“And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.”

John 17:5 (ESV) In the New Testament, Jesus’ favorite reference to Himself is “the Son of Man,” leading many to believe and question whether Jesus perceived himself to be the “Son of God.” The apostle John, who refers to himself as “the disciple whom Jesus loved,” records the final ‘public’ prayer Jesus has with His disciples before His crucifixion.

In the first five verses of this prayer, Jesus repeatedly makes statements, which make it abundantly clear that Jesus understands Himself to be the “Son of God.” Jesus begins in verse 1 by referring to himself as the Father’s Son. There can be no confusion here concerning to whom he is referring. To what Father would He pray but to God the Father. Though He refers to the Son in the third person, he is clearing referring to Himself as the Son. In verse 3, Jesus defines

Gallup Christian Church Pastor Bill Emmerling eternal life as knowing (the word here speaks of relationship) the only true God (The Father) AND Jesus. Jesus is putting Himself as a necessary requirement for eternal life, an equal requirement with God. In verse 5, the sited verse above, Jesus goes so far as to claim to have pre-existed the world (the word here is ‘cosmos’) and claims to have glory with/equal to the Father.

Make no mistake. Through His prayer, and particularly in these few verses, Jesus makes a very clear claim that He is the Son of God, pre-existing the universe, having equal glory with God the Father.

Jesus leaves us no room to decide that he is a ‘good moral

teacher.’

We must decide if He is who he claims to be or not. And the consequences of this decision are paramount!

In verses 2 and 3, Jesus claims that He has been given “authority over ALL f lesh” [emphasis mine] that is men and women, all made in the image of God, but are fallen because of their sinfulness. He claims it is His to give. And as stated earlier, He defines the requirements for attaining eternal life, we must know (that is be in relationship with as you would with a friend or a spouse) “… the ONLY true God, AND Jesus Christ…” [emphasis mine]. Without this relationship with God the Father AND Jesus the Chosen One, the Son, we cannot have eternal life.

From these five verses of Jesus’ prayer, we have two important matters to address, from Jesus’ own words: Will we acknowledge that Jesus is the Son of God, pre-existent to the universe, worthy of being listened to for what is true?

Will we heed His words and recognize there is only one way to eternal life, by having that needed relationship with Him and His Father in Heaven, the ONLY True God?

Celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day

ditor, On Oct. 8, the A nnual “Celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day” event will take place from noon to 5 pm at the Gallup Cultural Center located at 201 East Highway 66.

This marks the 14th year in Gallup that I have been organizing this particular event here while I have joined other nations a nd orga nizations across America during my travels since 1992, when Congress, by Public Law 102-188, designated it as the «Year of the American Indian.»

“Indigenous Peoples Day” actually began in July 1990, when representatives from 120 I nd ia n nat ion s f rom every part of the Americas met in Quito, Ecuador in the First Continental Conference (Encuentro) along with many human rights, peace, social justice, and environmental organizations to recognize 500 Years of native Resistance against

the continued colonization of our original homelands.

It was also in preparation for the 500th anniversary of Native resistance to the European invasion of the Americas from 1492

to 1992. The Encuentro saw itself as fulfilling a prophesy that the Native nations would

Lisa Romero-Muniz, the high school’s discipline secretary, was one of 58 victims

killed at the Route 91 Harvest music festival in Las Vegas, NV Oct. 1, 2017.

“Lisa Romero-Muniz was an amazing person who positively impacted the life of each person who was lucky enough to know her,” Hyatt said.”We know this road designation will be a reminder to all of us, of those individuals who have and do self lessly ser ve ou r mo s t v a lu a ble resource a s a community

– our students.”

The country-music loving Romero-Muniz, 48, was in Vegas with her husband to see her favorite country stars perform at the outdoor festival near Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino when Stephen Paddock opened fire from the 32nd floor of the hotel as Jason Aldean performed his set.

The gunma n cla imed a total of 58 lives and took his

own life before police could enter his room. The Route 91 tragedy remains the worst ma ss shooting in moder n American history. “[The district] also hope[s] the road designation reminds of the need to end violence in our own community and in communities across our country,” Hyatt said.

In addition to her husband, Romero-Muniz is survived by her three children.

he McKinley C o u n t y B o a r d of Commissioners held a discussion about a proposed road resolution at their regular meeting Oct. 2.

The commission discussed ceasing road maintenance on certain roads, portions of roads, road segments and bridges on which the county does not have jurisdiction.

County Manager Anthony Dimas Jr. said that the proposal has been prepped for key staff members to review. He said the commission, the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Navajo Nation have worked on the resolution for the past year.

Cou nt y Attor ney Doug Decker said the resolution can be sent ahead quickly or held for a comment session.

County Cha ir person Genevieve Jackson said the county should send a draft of the resolution to every chapter in New Mexico for d i s c u s s io n du r i n g t he i r respective planning meetings.

With the county’s approval, the draft would be moved out to chapters for further discussion, Dimas said.

“Should this move forward, the other folks who are involved to seeing roads maintained [like the Navajo Nation and BIA] will work more closely with the county,” Lee said.

said elders who live along the roads in question require emergency services and would benefit from improved roads.

Jackson called the affair a “bureaucratic nightmare,” and said the county is pressed into a corner due to available resources.

City chooses plan for Coal construction project

he Cit y of Ga l lup agreed on a design option for the Coal Avenue C om mon s Construction Project Sept. 25 that will feature a plaza street.

Stanley Henderson, public works director for the City of Gallup, said the city worked with GallupARTS, the Business Improvement District, Gallup MainStreet and the Northwest New Mex ico Cou nc i l of Governments on a plan to transform Coal Avenue, from First to Third streets, into an event street.

Henderson said the city held public meetings to stimulate downtown development and revitalization in a process dubbed “creative placemaking.”

He said three conceptual design options were formulated from the creative placemaking

process. Visuals and images of each design are available online at the City of Gallup website.

Howard Kaplan, project manager of the consultant team from Wilson & Company, was present at an Aug. 22 community workshop at Gallup Cultural Center, during which the three conceptual designs were presented.

At the workshop, Kaplan refer red to Coa l Avenue Commons as a “very exciting project.”

“We can help the community become more beautiful,” he said. “[Through this process], we will make Downtown more vibrant.”

discussion was the use of removable or retractable bollards versus large parked vehicles to block-off the street for public safety during events.

The council felt the former would be easier to work with.

The winning design, featuring a Plaza Street, was chosen by the council at the Sept. 25 regular meeting.

“W hen it’s done, that’s going to be a great attraction to the downtown area,” Dist.

2 Councilor Allan Landavazo said.

The rest of the council agreed the plan provides a great opportunity for Gallup.

“It is an opportunity for the community to come out and help develop Downtown to the way they want it to be,” said Dist. 4 Councilor Fran Palochak.

“Once I felt that I belonged to the land I stand on and the walls that house me and felt like they were breathing within me as I in them, my worldview and life completely changed,” Riege said.

He graduated from Gallup High School in 2012, and in 2017, the burgeoning artist graduated summa cum laude from the University of New Mexico with a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in studio arts and a minor in Navajo language.

In 2016, Riege’s relationship with SITE Santa Fe began when he participated in the SITE Scholar Program, an initiative for college- and graduate-level creative students to participate in the museum and contemporary art world.

That same year, he visited the SITE biennial show, much wider than a line, and it made a great impression on him.

“I was obsessed with everything I was experiencing there,” Riege said. “It was so beautiful.

I remember specifically thinking to myself that I would love to be in this show one day.”

So when curators sought out the young artist to participate in the 2018 biennial, he was thrilled.

Wrinkle said the youngest and oldest artists’ creations compliment one another beautifully, and Riege agreed.

“Her work and mine exist in this place of like part human part animal,” he said. “The vibrant colors of her work juxtapose well against my very subdued palette.”

Riege has several upcoming shows and demonstrations on the calendar, including a trip to Miami, FL, but at the moment, he’s also experimenting in his studio, “and just making,” he said. “It’s always fun seeing what my mind and hands decide to do. My body is often just the conduit of something higher telling me things and that’s what my art is.”

The SITE Santa Fe Sitelines exhibition opened in August and runs through Jan. 6, 2019.

Riege’s presence in the show entails demonstrations and artist talks, too.

His next performance at SITE will be Oct. 12, and Riege said he never knows what to expect; each performance is different.

“The performance paints a cycle of life weaving has from birth and to rebirth,” he wrote in his SITE installation proposal. “In my performances I embody creatures, part human, part animal, part nature creating rituals of prayer and stories for healing, wellbeing, Hózhó, patience, love. My art and my stories are made and told by my hands and therefore the hands of my ancestors and therefore the hands of the Holy People, all reaching out to the audience into our blessed space.”

Bahe said he often visits the zoo and loses himself in the animals’ colors — he said greatest artist is God because of how he painted them.

“There is beauty in these animals every time I see them,” he said. “I get inspired when I see all the beautiful colors of the animals and I think about how God made these beautiful animals. I just think that God is a big-time artist, how the Creator made these bright vivid colors, that’s what truly inspires me.”

also travels throughout New Mexico to showcase his work.

Currently, he’s working on projects in which he hopes to express more of the beauty he sees in this world.

Bahe said he never thought he would make money from his creations. Rather, he said, painting is simply something he loves to do.

“This is in me and when I’m not doing it for a brief period, I get that itch to get into it,” he said. “I just can’t get away from it, it’s something that I love.”

in 2nd Street stabbing Staff Reports

D

espite first responders’ life saving measures, a 26-year-old man died Oct. 3 from stab wounds sustained during an alleged confrontation with another man near Second Street and Hill Avenue.

Gallup Police responded to the area near Octavia Fellin Public Library shortly before 1 pm and found the badly injured victim, identified Oct. 4 as Pendrick Yazzie of Red Rock, N.M. Officers were able to get a lead on the suspect with the assistance of witnesses.

Detectives were called to the scene and began interviewing witnesses and processing the scene for evidence.

On the evening of Oct. 3, Gallup police arrested Gregory

Gregory L. Long L. Long, 26, for an open count of murder. He was booked into the Gallup McKinley Adult Detention Center with no bond. Prior to being booked, he was taken to Gallup Indian Medical Center for treatment of unknown causes.

WEEKLY DWI REPORT Staff Reports Michelle Anderson Sept. 28, 3:15 am Aggravated DWI McKinley County Sheriff’s O f f i c e D e p u t y Johnson Lee said he was d i s pa t ched to the T&R Gas Station north of Ga l lup on U.S. Highway 491 in connection with a report of a driver at the station who may have been intoxicated.

Lee said when he got to the station, he met the business’s security guard who told him he watched the car enter the station and saw the driver swerve as he was coming in. The driver then allegedly tried to turn around, and hit a cable barrier.

The vehicle was still at the station, so Lee said he went over to talk to the driver who was asleep inside the vehicle.

He woke her up, and as he did, he said he smelled the odor of liquor coming from inside the vehicle.

Lee said he also observed vomit on the driver’s door and on her leg. The driver, who was identified as Michelle Anderson, 43, of Fort Defiance, Ariz., showed signs of intoxication, he said.

Lee said he asked her how much she had been drinking

and she replied, too much.

When Anderson exited the vehicle, she staggered and failed to respond when Lee asked her several times if she would take field sobriety tests.

Anderson was arrested and taken to the sheriff ’s office, where she agreed to take a breath alcohol test. She posted two samples of .16 and was then transported to the county jail.

Tyrell Begay Sept. 25, 10:41 pm DWI M C S O D e p u t y T a m m y Houghtaling said she was traveling south on U.S. Highway 491 when she noticed a vehicle speeding.

She clocked it on her radar at 79 miles per hour.

She turned around and conducted a traffic stop at Hwy 491 and Francisco Pond. There, she made contact with Begay, 22, of St. Michaels, Ariz.

Begay told her he was on his way home and had to be at work as a wildland fire fighter at 7 am.

Houghtaling said she could smell the odor of alcohol coming from the car.

Begay said he was coming back from Albuquerque, and when Houghtaling asked him questions, she said he swore at her.

Houghtaling reported that she had Begay get out of his vehicle and sit on a guard rail. As he did, she said she observed him take something out of his left shoe and throw it into the nearby grassy area.

Begay reportedly said he had been drinking at a local restaurant with his crew and only had one drink.

He agreed to take a field sobriety test, failed and was placed under arrest. He was then placed in Houghtaling’s unit. He reportedly swore at Houghtaling again.

W hen t hey a r r ived at police headquarters, Begay accused Houghtaling of being a crooked cop and said he had been arrested in Dallas on drug charges after officers there planted drugs on him.

He agreed to take a breath alcohol test and posted two samples of .14.

A later search of the grassy area where he was seen throwing something only turned up a broken cigarette.

Shelbylyn Henry Sept. 21, 4:57 pm Aggravated DWI M C S O Deputy Eric Jim said he was traveling ea stbound on State Highway 264 when he observed a car coming from the opposite direction at a high

rate of speed. He clocked the vehicle on his radar at 79 miles per hour.

The driver, Shelbylyn Henry, 26, of Chinle, Ariz., said she was heading home. Jim said he noticed she had bloodshot eyes and slurred speech, so he

asked her if she had been drinking. She reportedly responded she had one mixed drink before driving.

She failed a field sobriety test and was arrested. A breath alcohol test posted samples of .18 and .16.

eneath a cloudy sky and falling rain, the Gallup High School boys’ soccer team fought against the Bloomfield High School Bobcats during a district game Oct. 2 at the Public School Stadium in Gallup.

Both teams sponged the field with their cleats to try and score in the first half. A few shots were close and some were blocked.

A few yellow cards were drawn, but the game continued on.

Despite the rain, which can mean slippery turf fields and soccer balls, both teams managed to control the pace of the game.

The GHS Bengals had a few opportunities to put a number on the board.

With 7:39 on the clock in the first half, Bengals senior and captain Daniel Olivas received an assist from a corner kick and headed the ball toward the goal but came up short.

Both ends were scoreless in the first half.

SECOND HALF The rain continued to fall

In the second half, the clock counted down, and both teams’ victories were on the line to determine who would score and when.

At 12:15, a Bloomfield player scored outside of the 18-yard

Some thought that it was uneven and didn’t do a great job of connecting the participants, but more described it as an interesting trek featuring some lovely music.

Tales from the Hood 2 Tales from the Hood was a cult urban horror anthology made back in 1995. Twentythree years later, a sequel from the same writer/director has been concocted, featuring more terrifying stories with a socio-political slant. The segments feature demonic dolls, possessed psychics, ghosts and more monsters. This feature is debuting on disc, so there aren’t many reviews yet as to how this effort compares to the original. However, the ones that have popped up have been complimentary, calling it a fun horror B-movie. It stars Keith David, Kedrick Brown, Alicia Davis Johnson and Creighton Thomas.

Three Identical Strangers - Chronicling a real story from the 1980s, this wildly successful documentary tells the true story of three adopted identical triplets who accidentally discover one another as college students. Initially, the siblings share joy and excitement about being reunited. However, as their parents attempt to make sense out of what the situation, they discover strange and dark secrets about how and why the kids were separated. Critics praised the doc. Admittedly, some felt that it could have delved further under the surface and didn’t clearly explain the motivations of certain parties, but almost all found it well-made with plenty of shocking and surprising twists and turns.

BLASTS FROM THE PAST! It isn’t as busy this week for older films receiving a Bluray upgrade, but the ones that are arriving are pretty great.

Criterion is re-releasing Ace in the Hole (1951). This drama from Billy Wilder (Sunset Boulevard, Some Like it Hot) ranks as one of the best features ever made, chronicling the efforts of a reporter (Kirk Douglas) trying to cover the

story of a man trapped in a cave.

The d is tributor’s also delivering The Naked P rey (1965) on Bluray. The film is about a group of ivory hunters who are caught by locals and forced to become the targets of the local’s hunting party. It has been given a high-definition digital transfer, a film scholar commentary, a recording of a 1913 report (read by Paul Giamatti) that served as the inspiration for the film, original soundtrack cues and the trailer.

Kino has a trio of fascinating releases as well, the first two being huge cult hits that originally aired on television.

The Night Stalker (1972) stars Darren McGavin as Kolchak, a Las Vegas reporter investigating a series of murders. He soon discovers vampires are responsible, leading the journalist into crime investigations involving various supernatural beasts. They also have the follow-up, The Night Strangler (1973), which involves a sinister alchemist.
