A thousand pains I felt From soul and heart to marrow Would from my eyes drop tears At sight of emptiness and sorrow
To see the lonely people Walk the street with bags Which hold what life delivers To see the shallow eyes As they picked through the trash For meager nightly dinner
What kind of world is this? Cried my soul That lets another suffer so And then blames them For making poor choices As if to absolve oneself In the dish of Pontius Pilate
And what do I become Cried my heart If fear of criticism and sneers More shallow than the eyes I saw Keeps me from one kind deed or word
Some may suffer, some may die Some may question why I try? But I shall make an effort on my part Because I said I would.
