Once there was a place called Little Small Press. They made books for kids.
3
There was a writer, an artist, and the printer, Dave. Dave made the books. The books loved Dave.
4
Dave makes me look good!
It doesn't even hurt when he runs us through the press!
The staples tickle when Dave binds us!
Even the page trimmer is like getting a haircut when Dave uses it! 5
But one day, the books heard some bad news.
Dave's leaving!
Oh, no!
Who will make us beautiful?
6
What will we do?
Who will make our brothers and sisters?
First the writer who had written the books left. Then the artist who had illustrated the books left. Then one day, Dave shut down the press. He covered it with a cloth. He went into the warehouse and told the books, “Goodbye, books. I’ll sure miss you.” Dave turned out the lights and left. The books cried.
7
Little Small Press was boarded up. It was dark inside. The books worried. They waited. They whined. Some of the young books whimpered. The older books wept.
8
Late at night, some of the books talked.
I wish I had gone to live at a little girl's house who would love me and take good care of me.
I always wanted to go to a school library.
I want to go live with a boy who will read me under the sheets with a flashlight when he's supposed to be asleep. 9
I would have been proud to be on television!
Or be in the Library of Congress or the National Archives!
Or made into a movie!
Or go to that great place in the sky called Amazon!
But mostly the books said, "I miss Dave."
Or win an award?
Or...be autographed...
"Oh, quit complaining," said one grouchy book. "Grow a spine. We've been through worse." 10
When things start to change at the Little Small Press, the books in the warehouse go into a panic! “What is going on?” “What will happen to us?” The books are curious, then worried, then scared. “I don’t want to go to the dumpster!” frets one book. “Oh, grow a spine!” grouses another book. What will happen? What does happen? Read this book and learn the story behind THE DAY THE BOOKS CRIED. Books have feelings too, you know.
