A Mediterranean Island, sparking in the iridescent blue of the Aegean. A harbor and winding alley-ways, the buildings are dazzling white and blue with bougainvillea-decked walls and flowered courtyards.
The Summer Night City Taverna, named by Donna for a favorite song, is a short walk from the Harbor. The Island’s remoteness keeps it free from too many tourists, but it still attracts the discerning visitor. The Taverna is a focal point for guests and locals –an undiscovered gem.

MAMMA MIA! is a romantic comedy, contrasting the dreams and aspirations of a 70’s girl and a 90’s girl. Through the storytelling magic of the songs of ABBA, we meet Donna, a feisty, independent single-parent, who doesn’t need a man to make her life complete; and her twenty-year old daughter Sophie, who wants romance, babies and a big, white wedding. If only her father could give her away…
If only her mother could tell her who her father is…
Sun, sea, and subterfuge are the backdrop to this tale of the women who wanted to have it all, and the girls who wants happy ever after. And has anyone asked what the men want?
Dear Patrons,
I am thrilled to share with you YES Company’s production of MAMMA MIA!. ABBA may be the reason we all were first drawn to this show, but I’ve come to also treasure the story it tells. MAMMA MIA! boldly shows audiences the complexities of life through the female lens. Donna, a fiercely independent woman, friend, business owner, superstar, and mother to an equally independent, hopeful, and stubborn daughter, Sophie; navigate what it means to close one chapter in order to begin a new one. Through nothing less than the shenanigans only a musical can bring, we witness their joy, stress, heartache, and unconditional love as this show reminds us that families come in all shapes and sizes.
Before this rehearsal process began, I often asked myself why this show is not only so popular with general audiences, but specifically with these YES Company students. Over the summer they’ve shared with me that this is the music they grew up listening to with their families, and for most of them, the 2009 MAMMA MIA! movie was their first introduction to movie musicals - creating a special place in their hearts for this story. So many of them see a part of themselves in these characters. They resonate with the sass and heartbreak alike. Time and time again, they tell me how this production is simply just so much fun, and the freedom to have that fun with their friends provides a profound sense of belonging. And as their teacher and director, that means everything to me.
Without a community effort, YES Company does not exist. I want to personally thank the incredible team that contributed to the success of this program and production, particularly the guidance from Director of Arts Education, Cortney Hurst and the support from Arts Education Programs Coordinator, Maya Patten. As well as Music Director, Chelsea Foy and Assistant Choreographer, Ally Munson who were with me day in and day out of the rehearsal process. I am humbled to lead a predominately-female design and production team, especially for a production that displays multigenerational female joy and strength in such a bold and beautiful way. Thank you to all the mothers and female figures, especially my own mother, for being an example of what it means to live fully and fight wholeheartedly for what is right.
I am continually grateful for the trust this community continues to place in me to educate the next generation of performing artists. It is because of the Gallo Center staff, Stanislaus County Office of Education, local designers, volunteers, families, alumni, donors and patrons like you that YES Company remains a place where students not only feel safe to be exactly who they are, but are supported in their journeys of self-discovery. Thank you for your continued support. Enjoy the show!

Directed and designed by local theater professionals, the cast for all YES Company productions features only students in grades 7-12. Through a unique eight week preparation process that combines both practical training and curriculum based performing arts, students learn to develop their individual craft alongside an ensemble of peers. It’s through this work as an ensemble that students gain a sense of community through trust, acceptance, and celebration of their differences as they work toward a common goal. YES Company is a partnership of Gallo Center for the Arts and Stanislaus County Office of Education.
YES ACADEMY: YES Academy provides year-long musical theater education, performance, and community engagement opportunities for current YES Company and graduating Gallo Center Youth Academy students. Through YES Academy, students will engage in regular musical theater classes (including vocal, dance and acting) and masterclasses in other theatrical production elements. These masterclasses include but are not limited to: lighting, sound design, costume, set, and properties design, stage management, higher education, audition preparation, and performing arts/creative careers. Participation in YES Academy is by audition.
GALLO CENTER YOUTH ACADEMY: Gallo Center Youth Academy is an afterschool musical theater program for students in grades 1-8. Through a unique ten week semester, students receive both practical training and curriculum based performing arts teaching as they develop their individual craft alongside an ensemble of their peers. Each semester culminates in a musical theater production presented in the Foster Family Theater. Gallo Center Youth Academy is a partnership of Gallo Center for the Arts and Stanislaus County Office of Education.
CREATION STATION SUMMER CAMP: Creation Station is a week-long musical theater camp for students in grades 1-6. Each summer, Creation Station takes on a new theme through which campers experience and learn about all aspects of the performing arts. The week-long camp culminates in a showcase performance for friends and family in the Foster Family Theater.
BROADWAY DAY SERIES: A unique experience made available to all students in grades 1-12 in our region with exclusive and behind the scenes access to the Center’s touring productions. Students participate in a masterclass themed about the show, sit in a special reserved section with fellow students and members of the GCA Arts Education team, receive a discounted ticket price and attend a post-show talkback with members of the cast or production staff.
