GENERAL INFORMATION
The mission of the Gallo Center for the Arts is to enrich the quality of life in the San Joaquin Valley by providing an inspirational civic gathering place where regional, national and international cultural activities illuminate, educate and entertain. The Gallo Center for the Arts celebrates the diversity of the San Joaquin Valley by offering an array of affordable cultural opportunities designed to appeal, and be accessible, to all.
Photo: Gallo Center for the Arts, Circa 2007The Center opened in September, 2007 and consists of the 440-seat Foster Family Theater, the 1,248-seat Mary Stuart Rogers Theater, the Marie Damrell Gallo Grand Lobby and a plaza serving both theaters, and the Modesto Rotary Music Garden.
As a regional non-profit performing arts center, the Gallo Center for the Arts presents internationally recognized touring artists in all disciplines, and also is home to four resident companies: Central West Ballet, Modesto Performing Arts, Modesto Symphony Orchestra and Opera Modesto.
The Gallo Center for the Arts is a unique public/private partnership. Construction was funded jointly by the County of Stanislaus, which owns the facility, and contributions from more than 4,000 individuals and businesses given to a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization which today operates the Center.
PATRON EVENT INFORMATION
• Ample and secure parking for Center events is located in the garage at 12th Street between H and I Streets. Parking passes are $5 cash and may be purchased when ordering tickets or at the entrance to the garage prior to performances. See GalloArts.org for a map and directions to the garage.
• Emergency exits are indicated by green exit signs located above each exit. For your safety, please check for the location of the exit nearest to your seat.
• The Gallo Center for the Arts is accessible to disabled patrons. Wheelchair seating is available in both theaters. Portable wireless listening devices are available at the “ Coat Check room at no charge. Please inform the Ticket Office of any special needs when ordering tickets.
• Food and beverages are not allowed in the theaters. (with the exception of bottled water and beverages served in theater cups.)
• Smoking is prohibited inside the building and within 20 feet of all entrances.
• Latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the Gallo Center for the Arts’ house managers.
• The use of recording equipment and the taking of photographs in Gallo Center for the Arts theaters is strictly forbidden. The Gallo Center for the Arts reserves the right to confiscate any such equipment and/or require offending customers to exit the premises.
• As a courtesy to artists and to your fellow patrons, please turn off or silence any mobile device on your person. No texting, please!
• Restrooms are located on all three levels of the Center.
• Lost items will be held in the Coat Check room on the main level until the end of the performance. Thereafter, please contact Ticket Office at (209) 338-2100.
• All patrons MUST have a ticket to enter a performance regardless of age.

Sittin’ In and Groovin’ Out is a fun, three-day mentoring program that offers a unique opportunity for select high school band students from throughout your community to bridge cultural, economic, religious and gender divides and unify in the spirit of creative collaboration and making great music together. Over the course of an intensive three-day residency, participating students will interact, rehearse, learn from and perform live in concert with JazzReach’s METTA QUINTET. ABOUT GCA ON TOUR
Designed for schools unable to visit the Gallo Center due to a lack of resources, GCA On Tour brings the wonder of live theater directly to the students. GCA On Tour features both locally produced performances and nationally touring productions, as well as residencies and workshops created specifically for school sites. We believe art can truly happen anywhere — even a school cafeteria.

Established in 1994, JazzReach is a nationally recognized New York City-based 501(c) (3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to the promotion, performance, creation and teaching of jazz music.
Through the presentation of innovative, widely acclaimed live multi-media educational programs for young audiences, captivating main-stage concerts for general audiences and informative clinics and master-classes for student musicians and ensembles, JazzReach is steadfastly dedicated to fostering a greater appreciation, awareness and understanding of this rich, vital, ever-evolving American art form.
Since premiering our debut educational program in 1997, JazzReach has successfully positioned itself as one of our nation’s leading arts organizations dedicated to jazz. Our dynamic,
innovative programs have triumphantly served over 650,000 young people nationwide in partnership with many of America’s most prominent performing arts presenters and have received unanimous praise from students, teachers, parents, the media and arts professionals alike.
ABOUT METTA QUINTET HANS SCHUMAN
Born in Lansing, Michigan, Hans Schuman began playing drums at the age of 13 while growing up in Tucson, Arizona.
A graduate of Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music, Hans has performed with world renowned artists including Benny Green, Cyrus Chestnut, Eric Reed, Wynton Marsalis, Brad Mehldau, Larry Goldings, Antonio Hart, Christian McBride, Marcus Strickland, Stefon Harris, Mark Turner, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Seamus Blake, Geoffrey Keezer and Joshua Redman among many others.
In 1994, he founded JazzReach Performing Arts & Education Association, Inc., a New York City-based not-for-profit arts organization dedicated to cultivating wider audiences for jazz music. Since inception, Schuman has successfully positioned JazzReach as the country’s leading provider of live educational programming for young audiences. Its programs have impacted and enriched over 400,000 young people in partnership with distinguished performing arts presenters in more than 85 U.S. communities.
All of JazzReach’s artistic programming is carried out by Metta Quintet, a highly creative unit featuring some of the most acclaimed, in-demand artists on the scene today and is as dedicated to blazing new artistic territory as it is to arts education.
BEN FLOCKS
Saxophonist and educator Ben Flocks captivates audiences around the world with his soulful sound. Born in Santa Cruz, California and residing in Los Angeles, Ben leads his own group and plays as a sideman in a variety of musical settings.
Ben has led his band at the Monterey Jazz Festival and the Bern Jazz Festival in Switzerland, and has had the honor to perform with Joshua Redman’s Trio, with Dave Brubeck as a Brubeck Institute Fellow, with Thana Alexa’s Quintet, with Antonio Sanchez and Migration, and with Sammy Miller and the Congregation.
Ben holds a MA in Music Education from San José State University and a BFA from the New School in New York and currently serves on faculty at Glendale Community College, Harvard-Westlake School, and the Stanford Jazz Workshop. Ben has a passion for music education and teaches saxophone lessons, improvisation courses, and ensembles utilizing focused listening and peer-mentorship methods. He also leads interactive concerts in schools for all ages tracing the history of jazz.
CHRISTOPHER MCBRIDE
Christopher McBride is a saxophonist based in Harlem whose work includes education, arranging and composition in addition to performance. He has been slowly but steadily turning heads with his ubiquitous work as an invaluable sideman since the mid-aughts. Now Christopher is gaining respect amongst fans, critics, and his peers as one of the most versatile saxophonists in the world. His 2012 debut album Quatuor de Force certainly establishes his ability to front a group and write his own soulful, melodically indelible tunes. Applauded for his ability to play in all musical situations, McBride has the ability to unleash a fiery attack and serrated tone, but on his recent album he explores a more measured, mellow sound heavily influenced by contemporary R&B—with a strong shot of Cannonball Adderley’s post-bop sensuality—but his improvising is very rigorous and cogent. As a composer, McBride was recently selected as the 2022 Make Jazz Fellowship artist at The 18th StreetArts Center in Santa Monica.
Born in Chicago, and starting his professional career there in 2007, Christopher made the move to NYC in 2013. His group The Whole Proof has played venues all over New York, and Christopher ran his ‘Singer Meets Saxophonist’ series at the famed Minton’s Playhouse in Harlem from 2017-2019. The
musicians he has performed for spans many genres with artists such as Billy Preston, Jimmy Heath, Bobby Broom, Percy Gray, Roy Hargrove, Pete Rock, Big Daddy Kane, Talib Kweli, Lupe Fiasco, Guy Sebastian, Solange, Ne-Yo, Jennifer Hudson, Alice Smith, Brandon Flowers, Lea DeLaria, 88 Keys, Milton Mustafa, Winard Harper, and the Marquis Hill Blacktet.
Christopher also serves as the Director of Education for the Second Line Arts Collective, a non-for-profit organization based out of New Orleans. His primary duties include writing curriculum for the Little Stompers division and teacher development. He has also worked as a journalist and consultant with Forbes Ignite, the innovation coalition of Forbes. He recently received a GRAMMY nomination for his work on Steven Feifke and Bijon Watson’s 2022 album Generation Gap Jazz Orchestra
JOE BLOCK
Pianist, composer, and bandleader Joe Block is a dynamic rising talent in the jazz world and beyond. He began playing classical piano at the age of two before switching to jazz in middle school. While growing up in Philadelphia, a city with a rich jazz and musical tradition, he was fortunate to learn and study from older musicians on the scene and in jazz education programs at the Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz and Performing Arts and the Kimmel Center. Joe currently resides in New York City where he attends both the Juilliard School (MM ‘22) and Columbia University (BA ‘21) as part of their highly selective and vigorous dual-degree exchange program. He has studied with Geoff Keezer, Marc Cary, Ted Rosenthal, Bruce Barth, and Frank Kimbrough.
Joe has had the opportunity to work and play with many esteemed musicians including Wynton Marsalis, Chris Potter, Kurt Rosenwinkel., Leslie Odom Jr., Steve Wilson, Peter Bernstein, Ari
Hoenig, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Jaleel Shaw, Joe Farnsworth, Eric Harland, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, and The Captain Black Big Band. As an active bandleader and sideman in New York and Philadelphia he has performed at numerous venues including Dizzy’s, The Django, Birdland, Smalls Jazz Club, Smoke
Jazz Club, Bar Next Door, Symphony Space, Alice Tully Hall, Shapeshifter Lab, Cafe Bohemia, Chris’ Jazz Café, South Jazz Parlor, @exuberance, Kimmel Center, Philadelphia Clef Club, Hilbert Circle Theatre (Indianapolis), Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and the Black Cat (San Francisco). He has also performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival, Belize Jazz Festival, Montclair Jazz Festival, Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival, Next Generation Jazz Festival, and Telluride Jazz Festival. He leads his own quintet and trio, and is the co-leader and founder of the Philadelphia Ambassador Big Band.
Joe has been nationally recognized by the National Youngarts Foundation (2017, Jazz Piano finalist and Jazz Composition honorable mention), Jazz at Lincoln Center (2016, J. Douglas White Composition Award), the Telluride Jazz Festival (2018, Telluride Jazz All-Star), and the Monterey Jazz Festival (2019, Next Generation Jazz Festival 1st Place Finalist and Outstanding Soloist), and Jazz Aspen Snowmass (JAS Academy 2021). In December of 2018, he served as the musical director and pianist for Wynton Marsalis’ annual holiday fundraiser and performance at the NYC Brooks Brothers Flagship Store. In December of 2019, he played a weekend with the Kurt Rosenwinkel Quartet at Chris’ Jazz Café in Philadelphia. The following weekend, he was featured in the Ari Hoenig trio. He appears on the 2020 Grammynominated record “The Intangible Between” (Orrin Evans and the Captain Black Big Band). More recently, he got to perform with Eric Harland as well as the Chris Potter Quartet.
ADI MEYERSON
Adi Meyerson is an Israeli raised bassist, composer, arranger and educatory. She was born in San Francisco, CA and at the age two, relocated with her family to Jerusalem, Israel where she grew up.
In August 2012 she moved To New York to continue her studies at “The New School for jazz and contemporary music” and late on at “Manhattan School of Music” for her MM. She had been fortunate to have studied with Master Musicians such as Ron Carter, Reggie Workman, Bob Cranshaw, Miguel Zenon, Jim Mcneely, Dave Leibman and many others.
Since Moving to New York, She has played with many greats such as Joel Frahm, Joe Magnarelli, Steve Nelson, Charli Persip and many others around the NYC area in highly renown venues such as Mezzrow, Smalls jazz, The Jazz Standard, Smoke and others. Meyerson has also played and recorded with contemporary artists such as SEENA, Verite, The Side Project, Fielded, MUMU, Melissa McMillan, Camile Trust, Doe Paoro, Kimbra and others. Meyerson is a Member of the Pop Chamber orchestra “Little Kruta” and has recoded and performed with them on Jimmy Fallon, as part of The hum Series, at National Sawdust and many other venues around NYC.
As a Bandleader and Composer, Meyerson has successfully made an impact on the NYC scene and earned her title as an up and coming young talent.
In September 2017, the band recoded their debut record “Where We Stand” which contains 9 original compositions all by Meyerson.on “Where We Stand” Meyerson showcases her talent as both a Bassist and Composer with an All Star Band featuring special guest vocalist and guitarist Camila Meza, tenor saxophonist Joel Frahm, trumpeter Freddie Hendrix, pianist Mike King and drummer Kush Abadey. Where We Stand, signified by the title track, and as a whole, represents times of uncertainty and change. Through this dynamic music, Meyerson displays how these particular moments, although unpredictable and ambivalent, can sometimes also carry a feeling of excitement and anticipation. For Meyerson, the album title feels relevant to her, both as an individual and as a part of the current social climate we all live in today. The Album was very well received and Meyerson’s music was referred to as “Intuitive and perspicacious, that displays a musical maturity that belies her newcomer status.”Downbeat Magazine
The band has headlined the “Make some Noise” music festival in May 2016, Center City Jazz Festival in Philadelphia in 2019 as well as the international Guatemala Jazz Festival in 2019. Meyerson Has performed all over the US, Latin America and Canada with her trio and as a side woman.
Meyerson is a 2020 recipient of the NYFA women’s grant, and is set to record and release her sophomore album in late 2021.
As an Educator, Meyerson has worked with Jazz at Lincoln Center as part of the “Jazz For young people” program, preforming in schools around the NY area, “The Jazz Power initiative” Directed by Eli Yamin, “Little Chopins” and the “Stanford Jazz workshop”. Adi also teaches at “Jazz House Kids” as part of their yearly “Chicka Power”Residency. In December 2017, She had a chance to travel to Guatemala to teach in the Quezaltinango international Jazz camp with her trio.
