ABOUT DIGITAL PROGRAMS

The Gallo Center has adopted the use of digital programs meant to be viewed on cell phones or other computer devices. This change has important public health, environmental and economic benefits: reducing close contacts between patrons and ushers, cutting our use of paper, and eliminating substantial printing costs. View the program only before shows begin or during intermissions. Please be considerate of other patrons and artists on stage by not viewing it during performances. Patrons who do not observe this courtesy and create distractions may be asked to leave. Thank you!

WHY YOUR SUPPORT MATTERS

The Gallo Center for the Arts is a non-profit performing arts center with a deep commitment to enriching the people and communities of California’s vast San Joaquin Valley. From the scintillating performances of its wonderful resident companies, to the great variety of world-class entertainment presented by the Center each season, to robust arts education programs for the region’s youth, this is where the magic happens.

From the beginning, the Center’s mission has been clearly defined: to provide an inspirational civic gathering place where regional, national, and international cultural activities illuminate, educate, and entertain. Since revenue from ticket sales and facility rentals only covers a portion of the costs associated with fulfilling this mission, the Center is dependent on the generous annual financial support from donors and program sponsors within our community.

Director’s Note

Sweat was written by Lynn Nottage in 2014. It went on to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2017. This powerful drama reminds audiences of the stacked deck still facing workers searching for the American Dream. The play is set in both 2000 and 2008 in the “Rust Belt” town of Reading, Pennsylvania. The play revolves around the lives of a group of friends who work at Olstead’s, a steel tubing factory/ mill. The local bar is the main setting, where we see the characters interact, laugh and argue as their jobs, fortunes and lives change over an 8 year period.

The play addresses issues that affect everyone—the economy, race relations, worker’s rights, loyalty, and regret. In its review of Sweat the Chicago Tribune states: “Sweat comes closer than any recent play to attempt to voice the feelings of union workers in a Pennsylvania steel town in 2000—long serving folk whose decent contract is slowly whittled away by a company salivating over the savings promised by the North American Free Trade Agreement.”

Playwright Lynn Nottage has written plays that focus on the rights of women, low-paid workers and the Black community around the world. She interviewed a number of workers in Reading to gain some insight into their lives. According to writer Michael Billington: “I can’t think of any recent play that tells us so much, and so vividly, about the state of the union.”

For the past 15 years I have had the privilege of working with Sankofa Theatre Company. Sweat marks the eighth production that I have directed. Sankofa is the only African American theatre company in our area. Our community is strengthened by the powerful themes and issues raised by their provocative work. I want to thank the Sankofa board for giving me these opportunities. I also want to thank the incredibly talented actors who will bring Sweat to life. And lastly, I want to thank all our patrons who have so enthusiastically supported Sankofa through your attendance and donations.

SWEAT is presented by special arrangement with Broadway Licensing, LLC, servicing the Dramatists Play Service collection. www.dramatists.com

NOTE TO AUDIENCE: The videotaping or audio and/or visual recording of this production is a violation of United States Copyright Law and an actionable federal offense.

This play contains strong language and mature themes. The dialogue, while at times harsh and explicit, serves as a vital part of portraying the characters’ realities and the play’s setting in a working-class community. We believe in presenting the script as written to preserve its powerful message and authenticity. Please be advised that it may not be suitable for all audiences. Viewer discretion is advised.

Introductory poem performed by Poet Laureate of Modesto, Angela Drew.

John Ervin III (Evan/Co-Director) is the co-founder and Executive Director/Artistic Director for Sankofa Theatre Company, the first African American Theatre Company founded in Modesto. John got his acting start appearing in church and other local plays. John eventually appeared as Walter Lee in A Raisin in the Sun (Modesto Junior College), MJC’s first African American Production. John played Tom Robinson in Gallo Center for The Arts’ To Kill a Mockingbird, Boy Willie in The Piano Lesson, Freedom Riders, The African American Journey, and The Exonerated and also starred in Prospect Theatre’s production of The Whipping Man. John codirected Freedom Riders and The African American Journey. To Kill A Mockingbird, Freedom Riders and The African American Journey were staged at the Gallo Center for the Arts. Sankofa Theatre Company also produced Looking Over the President’s Shoulder and Tawana House at the Gallo Center as well. John also performed in GCRC’s Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner. Most recently John performed and produced August Wilson’s The Piano Lesson for Sankofa’s 10 year anniversary and Death of a Salesman in 2023 and 2024 respectively. John recently completed a theatre director’s course at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre.

Alex Casas (Jason) My name is Alex Casas and this will be my fourth year in theatre. I am a first generation immigrant and I was born in Mexico. I grew up in Ceres, CA and found early success in sports, going on to play football for 12 years. After working in the law field for 7 years I decided to go back to school and pursue a Masters degree in education. I stumbled into a theatre class at MJC and fell in love with it. I am married and love to stay active and fit, and love the outdoors. I love animals, especially dogs; My dog’s name is Champ and he is a 6 year old American Bully who is my best friend. Some of my favorite roles I have been in are One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, as R.P McMurphy with MJC, Stanley Kowalski in Streetcar Named Desire with MJC, Water By the Spoonful as Elliot with Prospect Theatre Project and Of Mice and Men as Slim, with Gallo Center Repertory Company. I plan to continue pursuing theatre for the foreseeable future, and looking forward to continuing developing in the field.

Lawrence Smith (Chris) Blessings to the reader of this passage, I Lawrence Smith want to first and foremost give all the glory to God for this surreal moment of me being able to share this gift I was given to those I love and those I am thankful for surrounding you today. There truly is a lot to appreciate in life

and moments to learn from day in and day out that allow me to be the character that stands in front of you today. You might have seen me on the stage where I serve up laughs in a comedic stand up set. You may have seen my debut on the stage in a Streetcar Named Desire where I played Harold “Mitch” Mitchell, a magical experience you have to be in the quarter to truly feel. Recently I’ve been in Death of a Salesman as Hap and Born Yesterday with an assistant manager gig I picked up on part time. I am excited and long to give you all a wonderful experience once again. Thanks to all who have made this journey possible and my loving parents for the abundance of support. Without further ado top of da show!

Ron Smith (Stan) This is Ron’s first production with Sankofa Theatre Company. Some of his favorite roles have been Oscar in The Odd Couple, Oliver Warbucks in Annie, Nathan Detroit in Guys and Dolls, Albert in Bye, Bye, Birdie and The Narrator in A Christmas Story the Musical.

Alex Alaniz (Oscar) is extremely excited to return to the Gallo Center as Oscar in this production of Sweat by Lynn Nottage. This will be his fifth show on the Foster Family Stage, preceded by his roles as Big Brother in 1984, Harry Brock in Born Yesterday, Howard and Stanley in Death of a Salesman, and Curley in Of Mice and Men. Off the stage, Alex is finishing up his Associate’s in Theatre at MJC while working full time, hoping to turn his dreams of being a professional actor into a reality. He thanks everyone for coming out to see the show and hopes you love it!

Charlene West (Tracey) A heartfelt thank you to each one of you for being here and supporting this very special production. Charlene has been performing on stage for most of her adult life, with productions in the Bay Area, Oregon, Modesto, Merced, Sonora, and Murphy’s. Some of her favorite roles include Alice in Alice in Wonderland, Laura in Glass Menagerie, Abbie in Desire Under the Elms, Mrs. Frank in The Diary of Anne Frank, Miss Maudie in To Kill a Mockingbird, and the iconic Shakespeare roles of Juliet, Gertrude, and Lady Macbeth. As you can see, the current role of Tracey is quite different from her past roles, and she is excited for the challenge! Charlene remains eternally thankful to her friends

and family – especially her husband, who patiently gives up his time with her so she can play. In real life, Charlene works as an adjunct professor and loves to travel, wine taste, and spend her free time with her four adorable grandchildren. She dedicates this performance to them.

Tanika Baptiste (Cynthia) is a SFBATCC winning director, actor, vocalist and costume designer in the Bay Area. Select Regional credits: Becky in Waitress (San Francisco Playhouse), Adenikeh in Nollywood Dreams (SF Playhouse), Deloris Van Cartier in Sister Act (Woodminster Theatre and Pittsburg Theatre), Effie in Dreamgirls (Berkeley Playhouse).

Tanika is also the Head of Entertainment for Enchant Christmas at Paypal Park Stadium in San Jose, CA and is a proud member of both Actors Equity Association and the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society.

Megan Brown (Jessie) is a born and raised Modesto local. Highlights from her acting career include Born Yesterday, Twelve Angry Jurors, Three Sisters, and Twelfth Night. She received her BFA in acting at the University of California, Santa Barbara, in 2022. She’s thankful for the continuous support of her friends and family as she pursues her passion for performing. Enjoy the show!

Keith White (Brucie) majored in Drama at the prestigious Howard University in Washington, D.C. He served 20 years in the United States Air Force. After retiring, he returned to his first love of acting and was immediately cast as a principal in Lynn Ahrens’ Once On This Island. That same year he was cast in an animated movie called Ghost Money and a feature film 10 Days In A Madhouse where he played opposite Christopher Lambert, best known from The Highlander and Mortal Combat. After relocating to Northern California in 2014, he quickly landed roles the short films, City Council and The Anatomy Of A Boxer, and wrote and starred in over 40 internet commercials for a financial education company called FoolProof. He was then cast as Doaker in August Wilson’s acclaimed play The Piano Lesson, right here at the Gallo Theater and again in Twisted Tales of Edgar Allen Poe His most recent work was as the only male character in

Lynn Nottage’s Crumbs from the Table of Joy which played at the Town Hall Theatre in LaFayette, California, in June 2023. His last project was as Willie Loman in Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman which also played at the Gallo Theater.

Angela Drew (Poet) has loved the rhythm and sound of words for as long as she can remember. She began writing at age eight, with a deep understanding that words have the power to soothe, stir, or solidify connection, and she has played with the magic of storytelling ever since. Angela is the current Poet Laureate of Modesto, CA and is the winner and first-place slam champion of Modesto’s 2021 ILL List 16 Poetry Slam. She is currently curating a spoken word poetry album, with accompanying book, scheduled for release in April 2025. Join her on IG @shespitsfire_ or at shespitsfire.com
