“I don’t intend to retell the whole Alice story” Pendleton says, “but to use it as a taking off point for invention.

I’m curious to see what will emerge, and I’m getting curiouser and curiouser the more I learn about Lewis Carroll, who like me was a devoted photographer.”

Pendleton continues, “You can see why I think Alice is a natural fit for MOMIX and an opportunity for us to extend our reach. I want to take this show into places we haven’t been before in terms of the fusion of dancing, lighting, music, costumes, and projected imagery.”

This production marks Central West Ballet’s return to the beloved favorite of children everywhere, telling the story of an eccentric toymaker who dreams of bringing his mechanical dolls to life. This beloved 1979 play by Ernest Thompson tells the story of aging couple Ethel and Norman Thayer, who spend each summer at their home on a lake called Golden Pond. During this particular summer, they are visited by daughter Chelsea with her fiancé Billy Ray and his son Billy Ray Jr. The play explores the often turbulent relationship the young woman shared with her father growing up, and the difficulties faced by a couple in the twilight years of a long marriage.

Conductor Paul Haas breaks new ground with Dinuk Wijeratne’s Concerto for Tabla, a piece that highlights the “king” of Indian percussion instruments—known for the richness of its timbre and rhythmically complex repertoire unique to the instrument itself.

Modesto Performing Arts is launching its 54th season with A Chorus Line, the hit show that opened on Broadway in 1975 and became the longest running musical at that time. Conceived and originally choreographed and directed by Michael Bennett, it is an exuberant celebration of those unsung heroes of the American musical theatre: chorus dancers. The show takes the audience through the final, grueling audition for a new Broadway musical. It’s also a celebration of the American musical itself, our country’s unique gift to the world. Among the show’s hit songs are “What I Did for Love,” “At the Ballet,” “The Music and the Mirror,” and “Dance: Ten, Looks: Three.”
