“I have loved the performing arts for as long as I can remember,” enthuses Christina Gomez. “Having grown up in Ceres, I remember traveling to other places to experience what the Gallo Center routinely offers our community. I am so grateful that my children get to enjoy the diversity of performances the organization brings to our own backyard.”
Among those performances, Gomez cites Latino shows, comedy, Broadway tours, and many of the resident company presentations. Her husband Victor and their two children, 14 and 10, have only to travel from their Turlock residence to enjoy them.
Gomez expects her enthusiasm for the performing arts to personify the new leadership role she is undertaking at the Gallo Center for the Arts, where she became board chair for a two-year term beginning July 1. The E. & J. Gallo Winery executive succeeds Alex Mari, M.D. A former trustee of the organization, Gomez joined the board of directors in the 19/20 season and has been serving as the board’s treasurer as well as chair of the board’s Finance Committee.
She views her role at the Gallo Center as one that supports and contributes to its stability. Gomez cautions, “performing arts centers have not yet fully recovered from the COVID pandemic that resulted in complete shutdowns. Now we are experiencing economic uncertainty. As chair, I plan to work with Chief Executive Officer Chad Hilligus and the board on strategies that enhance the Center’s mission and enable long-term goals.”
Says Hilligus, “Christina’s passion for and dedication to the Gallo Center is inspiring. In addition to the impressive professional experience she brings to the role, she was instrumental in cultivating the Center’s relationship with the Latino community, which led to the successful launch of the Amigos of the Center donor initiative.
“I am eager to work together to advance the great work of the Center with Christina’s forward-thinking leadership.”
Gomez is celebrating her 16th anniversary with the winery, where she is Vice President— Internal Audit & Enterprise Risk. She received a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with a double concentration in Accounting and Computer Information Systems from San Jose State University. In addition, Gomez holds credentials as a Certified Public Accountant and Certified Compliance & Ethics Professional.

Late Nite Catechism made its U.S. debut 30 years ago and since then has been presented in more than 410 cities around the world. It’s an uproarious piece of theatre that takes audience members back—sometimes nostalgically, sometimes fearfully—to the children they once were. An irrepressible Sister teaches an adult catechism class to a roomful of “students” (the audience). Over the course of the play, Sister goes from benevolent instructor, rewarding the “students” for correct answers with glow-in-the-dark rosaries and laminated saint cards, to authoritative drill sergeant. This is great fun!

This singer-songwriter has a warm, sultry vibe, smooth, refined vocals, and superb acoustic guitar skills. Think ‘indie R&B with a jazzy pop flow.’
Scott is an indie-folk/country artist from the Foothills. Captivating melodies and lyrics about love and heartbreak demonstrate his sheer passion for music.

This acoustic duo performs pre-war Delta and Country Blues, with an aim to keep the genre alive by sharing it with others—and their joyful playing style!
A favorite singer-songwriter across the valley, she’s a threetime Modesto Area Music Award winner who plays Americanastyle music with a soulful take.
Dr. Jim Johnson’s retirement as the artistic director of the Gallo Center Repertory Company at the end of last season concluded one of the more amazing chapters in the Gallo Center’s history.
The story begins in late 2009, when the Center’s then-chief executive officer, Lynn Dickerson, determined that the organization’s still-fledgling arts education department needed the wisdom and guidance of an experienced education professional.
Lynn turned to Jim, who had retired from Modesto Junior College in 2008 after a long and distinguished career, ending his time there as an emeritus Professor of Communication & Theatre/Dean of the Arts, Humanities & Communications Division/Interim Vice President of Instruction. In January 2010, Jim signed on as the Center’s Arts Education Coordinator. In that role, Jim helped vet and select appropriate productions for the Student Matinee Series that over the Center’s 16-year history has introduced hundreds of thousands of students to the wonders of the performing arts. In addition, Jim supervised the Center’s annual program of taking plays that dealt with social issues affecting students—chief among these, bullying— directly to schools.
By 2011, Jim and Lynn recognized another opportunity, and so began collaborations with other arts organizations; namely, Prospect Theater Project, the Theatre Department at Modesto Junior College, and the Drama Department at California State University-Stanislaus.
The first of these co-presentations, with Prospect Theater Project, was To Kill a Mockingbird in 2011. The production, directed by Jim, was a rousing success—artistically, critically and financially— and it established a benchmark for quality and accomplishment that still exists today.
Out of the ‘Mockingbird’ experience came another milestone. In 2012, four African American actors in its cast were inspired to launch Sankofa Theatre Company. Jim would go on to serve as a mentor to the company for several years thereafter, as Sankofa partnered with the Center to shine a spotlight on Black history, life and culture through the performing and visual arts.
Based on the success of its co-presentations with other organizations, the Gallo Center decided to
launch its repertory company in 2016. With Jim as the artistic director, the ensuing seven years would see GCRC present a virtual catalog of classic and contemporary works. Every production became a showcase of performers and creative teams from across the San Joaquin Valley coming together to create unique theatre experiences.
And what helped make this chapter in Gallo Center history amazing? Jim did it all—for 13 years—as a volunteer.
THANKS,
Jim had a hand in—producing, directing, acting in or advising:
