Emmy Award-winning Actor Richard Thomas brings to life “the nation’s one true comic genius ” ( The New York Times ) in Mark Twain Tonight!, written and originally performed by Hal Holbrook. Join the millions who have cheered for the legendary one-man show, bursting with Twain’s “uproariously funny” and “pungently wise” ( Time Magazine ) humor. Most recently seen on Broadway in Our Town , and on Netflix’s Ozark , Richard Thomas is the first and only actor authorized to perform the play since the original.

Best known for playing the iconic JohnBoy Walton in the beloved TV series The Waltons , Richard Thomas has enjoyed an award-winning career in television, film and on the Broadway stage. He has helped keep the touring play industry alive with cross-country appearances in Twelve Angry Men and To Kill a Mockingbird . Now he takes on the role of Samuel Clemens made famous by another touring veteran, Hal Holbrook.
Thomas is the only actor authorized to perform Mark Twain Tonight! by Holbrook’s estate, a responsibility and legacy he takes very seriously.
“I’m delighted they decided it was time to bring it out again because I think it’s a great time right now for us to hear about Twain,” explained Thomas. “When the estate reached out and told me Hal would probably be happy if I did it, I immediately said I would love to.”
While Holbrook performed the show for more than 50 years, assembling the play from a large cache of Twain’s writings, the material was made available to Thomas to develop his own spin on the piece.
“Hal curated and assembled a whole lot of Twain’s material and didn’t create a form for it,” continued Thomas. “There’s a lot of different material an actor can put together and change-up as he wants to.”
Mark Twain Tonight! offers more than one reflection of public life that will resonate with audiences today.
As Thomas explains: “Twain’s evolution of social consciousness in terms of race and social justice really mirrors America’s own evolution in that respect. What makes him interesting dramatically is he’s aware of these contradictions and the dark side of his own nature, and he shares it.”
Thomas goes on to extol the virtues of the Sage of Hannibal, Missouri. “It’s amazing how he remains fresh and prudent,” the actor reflects. “There’s a great piece on election years and I’m very excited about putting that in the show.
“Actors are intrepid researchers, and Twain is just a bottomless well,” concluded Thomas. “You can just keep drawing good water from it without running dry. He has insights, he makes you laugh, and he makes you think.”

The first Broadway touring production presented at the Center was Little Shop of Horrors in October 2007.

The inaugural Broadway season was sponsored by Boyett Petroleum, who continue to sponsor our Broadway shows to this day!

We have big news for Downtown Modesto and for patrons of the Gallo Center’s free outdoor events in the Modesto Rotary Music Garden. A permanent shade structure for the Center’s ‘front yard’ is projected to begin construction this fall with completion by early spring.
Fans of our Brown Bag Summer Concert Series and other free community events— many of which occur during warm weather months—will find a welcome respite from the sun and enjoy closer proximity to the outdoor stage.
Constructed with steel framing, sailshaped fabric canopies and artificial turf, the project will provide a significant expanse of shade, offering high-grade UV protection. Additionally, it will create a more comfortable and inviting gathering place where the community can enjoy events
year-round, while also enhancing the overall look, functionality and potential of the Music Garden.
Superior Recreational Products is the structure’s manufacturer, with construction by Zoom Recreation. A big tip of the hat goes to project manager Chad Kennedy from Westwood in Modesto, whose combination of enthusiasm, hard work and dedication is making it happen.
Project funding includes generous support from Modesto Downtown Improvement District, Modesto Rotary Foundation and the T.S & K.D. Glide Foundation. We thank them all, along with our visionary Board of Directors!
Stay tuned!

Modesto Performing Arts’ founder Paul Tischer will direct this production of A Christmas Carol . It is a faithful adaptation of the Charles Dickens book telling the story of the redemption of Ebenezer Scrooge, a miser who hates Christmas and all humankind, including his employee Bob Cratchit and his family. On Christmas Eve, he is visited by the Ghosts of Christmases Past, Present and Future. The revelations shown to him by the three ghosts reveal that Scrooge really does have a heart after all.
