edito What maketh the (Isle of) Man? The rumours are true, it’s back baby and better than ever! Love it or loathe it, the island has not been the same without it. ‘The world’s greatest road racing spectacle,’ TT 2022 is coming back with a refresh, an upgrade, a new lease of life and you’re all invited! Ok, not all of you, but flick through to page 56 and find out how two of you can win a pair of VIP hospitality tickets for Monday 6th June.
T
he big re-shuffle, the world’s pause button, whatever you want to call it, the enforced hiatus of the last few years has made us all re-examine our identity, re-assess situations, feelings or experiences and hopefully allowed us to come out the other side a little stronger. See page 50 for a snapshot of the new and improved TT, with it’s fancy new fanpark, live TV coverage, medical centre and warm-up laps, all geared towards making the experience even better, more inclusive and safer for riders and fans. Bookmark page 53 for a rundown of all the, ‘Monster Energy Fan Park,’ has to offer for two weeks of live coverage and live acts, all washed down with a vino at the, um, Vino Bar. Also keen to reaffirm their identity are the bewhiskered folk of the island, captured majestically by photographer Dave Bell, ‘who has uncovered the finest mammoth masks on the island, in his new project, ‘Beards of Mann.’ See some of the, ‘Island’s most bountiful beards, ‘ on page 16 and find out how beards are a mark of confidence, they are fun, they are a, ‘conversation starter, a compliment catcher, ‘ but more than that, they are, ‘a deeply personal thing. It is wrapped up in our identity.’ However, if you do find beards and bikes a bit blah then fear not, the Isle has a monumental mixed bag of activities on offer in the coming months. Our what’s on pages (6-10) are literally bursting with ideas and options. May has hit the ground running and swimming and cycling with its Triathlon spring weekend, a Manx celebration is on the cards on 21st May and the kids are spoilt for choice with productions of, ‘The Witches,’ ‘Big Dick Whittington,’ or ‘Milkshake! Live,’ to choose from. Music lovers can mix it up with Opera or Abba, and if all that is a bit energetic then perhaps it might be best to take a breather at the, ‘Inaugural Manx Scrabble Championship.’ There really is something for everyone this season. Enjoy the ride! SR

TRADERS OF THE LOST ARTS
Before the age of mass production our communities relied on numerous crafts people to provide them with all of the necessary items needed for life. These skilled traders were integral to our island community. As Manx life moved from the rural to the urban these once essential crafts were largely forgotten. This exhibition celebrates these lost skills and encourages conversations about times gone by.

Almost exactly a year ago, it looked like it was all over for our intrepid porcine heroes...... but you can’t keep a good band down and like a sausage rising from the flames, your favourite purveyors of fine pork are back, up on their hind trotters again and raring to go!
Gaz Coombes, Mick Quinn and Danny Goffey, along with long-term collaborator Rob Coombes who officially joined the line-up in 2002, have scored an unbroken run of five Top 10 albums (six, if you include a greatest hits). In the thirteen years between their first album and their last they were chased down the street by fans in Japan, scored the biggest-selling debut for Parlophone since The Beatles, helicoptered into Glastonbury, turned down a Calvin Klein pants ad, toured the world on their own and supported everyone from Blur and Arctic Monkeys to Foo Fighters, Radiohead and The Cure. And now the band is finally here!

There is always a period when a man with a beard shaves it off. This period does not last. He returns headlong to his beard.”
Among the most thought-provoking questions of our time is surely thus: WHAT IS BEARD? What, indeed!
From Abraham Lincoln to Gandalf; Billy Shakespeare to Tom Hardy, the beard has been worn with pride by a multitude of manly hunks all the way back to the ‘pre-Gillette era’ and right up to now - ‘The bewhiskered age’. And today, after years on the sidelines, beards are more popular than ever. But why? What is it about the facial fleece that is so appealing? From an evolutionary perspective, wonder whiskers were said to protect the face not only from the elements, but also, from jabs and punches from their cavedwelling neighbours. In the Middle Ages, simply touching another man’s beard could be deemed grounds for a duel! And rightly so. While in eastern cultures, the long beard has for centuries represented dignity and wisdom. Close your eyes and picture a baby-faced sensei. See? Your brain cannot even begin to conjure up that image; it’s preposterous. And what about now? Where the beards come in all shapes and sizes, styles, and sculptures. A modern world in which lumberjack and woodsman are joined in brotherhood with the hipster, the ruffian, and the rock star. It is time. Beard time! Which brings us to local photographer, Dave Bell who has uncovered the finest mammoth masks on the Island, in his new project ‘Beards of Mann’.
BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS
15
UPFRONT
Dave, an experienced photographer, and fluffy-fuzz-faced man himself, took it upon himself to capture some of the Island’s most bountiful beards. The images themselves are arresting, striking and beguiling. Like all great photographers, Dave is seeking something beyond the photo itself. “It was quite a simple idea, at the start, if I’m honest”, says Dave, “a very good friend with a fantastic beard was talking about trimming his beard right back”, I said before you touch it, you must let me photograph you “so it was about snapping every day, normal fellas with awesome beards! As a bearded man myself, I know that most blokes, when we see another great beard, we all have a little bit of beard envy. So, I thought, why not photograph some epic beards? Everyone loves a beard, after all…. Right?”. “I’ve been overwhelmed with the response”, Dave says, “and, it’s spiraled into something far bigger than I could ever have imagined. For me, I just wanted to do justice to the cracking beards, and the interesting guys behind them. I’ve even been given support by Braw Beard, Scotland’s original Beard Oil company which was perfect for the project. Their tagline resonated with me ‘Take pride in it, it grows for a reason’. #BrawBeardOils Who knows where it will go from here? I’m loving the ride and feel energised by this project. Is this the start of a Manx beardy community? One can only dream”. Dream, we shall. It’s a bit of fun. A chance for cosmic bearded badasses to look cool… for the right light, the texture, patterns, and mood to take hold, and look majestic on the page. And yet it’s far more than that too. A beard is a sacred and deeply personal thing. It is wrapped up in our identity. Protection from more than the elements. Confidence. Body confidence. A sense of being the hairy band t-shirt we wear on our faces that says ‘this is who I am’?

Juggling a busy work schedule and running a business alongside family life there isn’t always that separation. Sometimes you underestimate being able to take time out, to go to your quiet place and relax & chill by yourself, for me it’s being behind the camera. I’m not known for being the shy quiet type but being behind the camera you learn to speak to people to convey emotion through their composure, their eyes – I love it so for me this was a personal project by me for me. It wasn’t a paid job, and it was my first ‘photo project’ I’d seen other great local photographers produce fantastic photo journalistic work and thought, I’d like to have a go at that…. Nothing ventured nothing gained… so with a quick post on the interweb looking for the Beardystuff and people started contacting me…. (Mainly wife’s & girlfriends nominating their other halves) but the rest is history. In this era where mental health is rightly, and finally, rising to the front of the cultural conversation, the importance of the beard cannot be underestimated. Physical appearance is linked to self-esteem. And men from every walk of life, and all manner of age ranges, fight personal battles with their sense of self and confidence. There’s something transformative about a mighty mound of sculpted fur. This culture of selfies, gym workouts; the Instagrammification of society puts pressure on men and women to conform, to obtain a perfection that can seem utterly unattainable. So, if a bit of Viking fur adds to your confidence, then go forth and conquer noble whisker warrior! The beard can take a person out of their shell. It’s a conversation starter. A compliment catcher. A way to connect and give a sense of uniqueness. Thor had a beard and he’s the god of Thunder, after all. And just look at these majestic, bold, beholders of the beard, surface carpet adorned lords, basking in their macho, ruggedness. There’s manliness here… and warmth too. Dave’s project has captured the commanding nature of the humble bearded Mann and the kindness behind the eyes too.
Head to dkphotography.im to see the full online gallery of ‘Beards of Mann’. Do you think you have the bearded wonderstuff? Whilst the project is over, Dave has said anyone that wants to extend the ‘Beards of Mann’ photo gallery should get in touch via any means: Instagram: dkphotographyiom Facebook: dkphotographyiom website: dkphotography.im Thanks to: All Beards of Mann photo subjects for giving up their time willingly & freely. MUSIC, SOUL FOOD AND MARDI GRAS CARNIVAL CELEBRATIONS Sight Matters, the operational arm of the well-known local charity Manx Blind Welfare Society, recently hosted a spectacular Mardi Gras Celebration. The event was hosted by Manninsight, a newly created bespoke fundraising initiative supporting Sight Matters. Manninsight’s first fundraising project will complement the fabulous Freedom Field already developed at Sight Matters’ headquarters in Onchan. During the last two years of the Covid pandemic and with life in our
gilded cage, we have all learned to embrace ‘staycationing’ on our wonderful Island. Manninsight’s task is to raise funds to help bring this concept to the Sight Matters Community. Karen Callin, Founder and Chairman of Manninsight, said: “We were thrilled to launch Manninsight with such an exciting event. Mardi Gras, traditionally ‘Fat Tuesday’, is a carnival celebration to enjoy soul food, jazzy music and to have fun.”
The Black-Tie Masquerade Mardi Gras took place at Bonds Restaurant in Onchan. Whilst the temperature may not have been quite as at the Rio Carnival, music by Rachel Wild and Mark Burrows created a jovial atmosphere and entertained the guests. Following a welcome Hurriane Cocktail, Bonds chefs Andrew McKinnon and Ruben Pretorius treated them to a fabulous Creolesque six course tasting menu. Manninsight’s next event ‘A Night at the Museum’ will be held on October 21.
ZURICH, ON THE ISLE OF MAN ANNOUNCED AS LARGE SCULPTURE SPONSOR FOR THE BIG SPLASH 2022 Hospice Isle of Man are delighted to announce that insurance group Zurich has partnered up with The Big Splash to support the Wild in Art trail in 2022 as a large sculpture sponsor. The Big Splash is the largest mass participation art event to ever come to the Isle of Man and will see a trail of over 30 life size Dolphins take centre stage on a public art trail live around the Island for 12 weeks from May – September 2022. Zurich has around 300 employees on the Island who are all committed to community investment, wellbeing and sustainability. Bruce Pearson, CEO of Zurich International Life Limited said, “We are thrilled to be involved in the Big Splash 2022. The trail is set to be really exciting, and we were drawn to the key objectives of this campaign of promoting wellbeing and sustainability – both of which are high on our agenda as an organisation. Zurich on the Isle of Man has a longstanding relationship with Hospice Isle of Man through our charity and community initiatives and therefore we
20
are so pleased to be able to support them further in the vital work they do.” Chief Executive of Hospice Isle of Man, Anne Mills said, “With the incredible team at Zurich behind us, we’re sure the dolphin trail will be a huge success. Zurich’s commitment to Manx charities is very admirable, and we are beyond grateful that they have chosen Hospice as one of the lucky ones for 2022. We are currently in the process of finalising where our large and our small dolphin sculptures are going to be located for the summer and we are certain we’ve spread them out to reach every corner of the island. It’s going to be the perfect family activity for everyone to get involved in!”
Sculpture sponsors have now been matched with their dolphin designs and Zurich have chosen to form a partnership with local artist Leanne Mathews. Leanne is an artist specialising in decorative floral art, large abstract paintings and print making. She has created work for local businesses such as Conrods Pizzeria, The Cook Shack, Laxey Kitchen and Mongoose Merchandise. More than 30 individually designed ‘life sized’ dolphin sculptures along with over 40 baby dolphins (Calves) will form a trail of discovery across the Island this year, encouraging residents and visitors alike to explore our environment from an exciting new perspective – whilst promoting our Biosphere, wellbeing and active lifestyles. ISLE OF MAN ART SOCIETY EASTER EXHIBITION
PROUDLY SUPPORTED BY RAMSEY CROOKALL The 2022 exhibition was held over the Easter weekend in the lovely setting of the Villa Marina Arcade. The stylish architecture added a fine backdrop to the art on display. The Exhibition’s guest of honour was the Island’s Lieutenant Governor, Sir John Lorimer, who was there in his capacity as patron of the Isle of Man Art Society, and he formally opened the event on Thursday evening at a Reception hosted by Ramsey Crookall. Sir John was ably supported in opening the exhibition by the President of the Isle of Man Art Society, David Sayle, and David Harding, a Director of Ramsey Crookall. This year’s Exhibition was an opportunity to celebrate the UNESCO Biosphere status of the Isle of Man granted in 2016. The diversity of works, with many themes relating to the environment, celebrated the rich culture of the Isle of Man and the people and places that make it such an extraordinarily special place and continued the Art Society’s aim of sustaining the Island’s rich culture, heritage, and environment for generations to come. On show were works by artists from across the Isle of Man which provided a lovely mix of styles and subjects, with paintings, drawings, collages, jewellery, and sculpture all represented. Most of the works were available for purchase and business was brisk as patrons moved quickly to snap up the work or works of their choice. Once the red dot appeared on an item then the search had to move elsewhere, although the work itself remained on display until the end of the event on Bank Holiday Monday.

WHEN ART MEETS THE NATURAL WORLD Words: Suzy Holland Images: Clare Payne
Clare Payne, the Biosphere Artist in Residence - hosted by Manx Wildlife Trust and funded by the IoM Arts Council says her year will be ‘steered by the public’: engaging with the community, inspiring those who might not usually be involved with art, and will, most of all, be a collaboration. 34
ISLE OF MAN PREMIER MAGAZINE
CULTURE
Clare’s mis-matched (her words) CV includes a degree in Zoology, teaching, presenting, video creating, photography – she was a wedding photographer prepandemic - and a family background of arty parents and an AS level in art. “Art was my solace during lockdown,” she says now. “That hour-a-day exercise habit took me outdoors and I found art and nature overlapped not just then, but now everything’s opened up again.” Her interest in the great outdoors, not just from a scientific point of view but also as an artist, meant the Biosphere residency role could have been tailor-made for Clare. Leigh Morris, CEO of the Manx Wildlife Trust agrees: “MWT is delighted that Clare Payne is our Biosphere Artist in Residence and I believe she will be a key part of how we aim to connect with far more people in the Isle of Man about #ManxNature – our social media hashtag for the year - which is a key aim for us in 2022. Clare is not only a fantastic artist, using a diverse range of techniques, but also a wonderful, enthusiastic communicator and educator.” Clare began her year with a short survey, asking the public how they’d like to be involved. For Easter, Clare and MWT joined the Bridge Bookshops in Port Erin and Ramsey in an Easter ‘egg-stravaganza’ egg-painting contest open to children and adults and she is also running a series of ‘Painting in your pjs’ online workshops to encourage artists of all abilities, and none, to pick up pens, pencils and paintbrushes to celebrate the beauty of the Isle of Man. The first big MWT/Biosphere event of the summer is a Bioblitz, taking place in Groudle Glen on Saturday 7 May. “A Bioblitz allows us to record all of the biodiversity in a designated area and on a specific day,” explains Clare. “The public will have the opportunity to find and identify birds, plants and animals, with the use of ID apps and with the help of our onhand specialists. Groudle Glen has a great variety of habitats - woodland, freshwater, marine and coastal – which means it’s a brilliant opportunity for people to connect with their environment and the incredible creatures within it as well as learning more about them.” Then the annual Festival of the Sea will take
place in Port Erin in July. For this Clare is planning a collaborative large format art installation, which will be put together during the day. When I spoke to Clare in early April she didn’t want to give away exactly what this might involve, although she did hint that it might be a mosaic, with themes including the transient evolving nature of, well, nature and, an island favourite, rubbish both biodegradable and imperishable. Intriguing! But that’s not all: more events across the Island are planned during the year, including at the Ayres Nature Discovery Centre/Trail and the Ramsey Forest project which can be accessed via Ramsey Hairpin and stretches towards Sulby. Clare’s hope is that her residency leaves a legacy for the Island, not just in permanent art installations, but also a more emotional legacy with intergenerational involvement in both nature and art. There is also a personal legacy for Clare: “I see the romance in the name of nature and also in the conservation of our environment. There is such good work going on here, including the conservation of the habitats like the sea grass beds, the monitoring and mapping of basking sharks and dolphins, seals and puffins and of course the unique sanctuary of the Calf of Man. If my residency draws attention to all of these projects, large and small, and encourages more people to get involved in conservation, then I’ll know it was all worthwhile.” Leigh Morris echoes these thoughts: “We are excited at seeing how Clare uses art to help MWT engage with a far wider and more diverse audience, and I am certain that all those who join her for a session will learn lots about nature, create some wonderful art and have lots and lots of fun!”

Five reasons to consider
switching your mortgage
Switching or transferring your mortgage could save money in the long term and be easier than you think
There are lots of things in life we think about doing but never quite get around to. Whether it’s losing a few pounds, clearing out the garage, or changing our mortgage, there’s often something getting in the way. Our brains constantly battle the temptation of short-term pleasures over longer term rewards, even when we know, deep down, what is better for us. Thankfully, when it comes to switching or transferring a mortgage, once you get started, the process can be much easier than you think.
“There are lots of reasons why it can make sense to change your mortgage,, but the main principle is saving money...” Estelle Armour, Head of Mortgage Sales, Santander International.
Estelle Armour, Head of Mortgage Sales, Santander International, said. “There are lots of reasons why it can make sense to change your mortgage, but the main principle is saving money by moving to a better rate or by getting better terms with your current lender or a new provider. Even if you are in a fixed rate mortgage you may still want to weigh up whether potential savings are more than the early repayment charges.” Whether you are switching deals with your current lender, or re-mortgaging with a new provider, you need to work out the value of your home, and the equity you have in it. A mortgage provider will then carry out an assessment of your financial situation and conduct credit checks.
Estelle said: “We aim to make the process of switching mortgage or re-mortgaging as simple and straightforward as possible. Every customer is different, and circumstances may have changed
since you first took out a mortgage. Interest rates change too, so it’s worth conducting a review of your mortgage every year to see if your mortgage is working for you.”
Here’s five reasons why YOU might want to consider moving your mortgage:
1
2
Your fixed rate term is coming to an end At the end of a fixed rate, you will move onto a standard variable rate (SVR). This may be higher than your fixed rate so it’s worth shopping around.
You may want to overpay your mortgage Perhaps you’ve inherited some money or received a bonus and want to overpay your mortgage now. This could potentially reduce the length of the loan and the overall amount of interest you pay.
3
4
You have built up enough equity to change tiers The rising housing market in the Isle of Man means many homes have increased in value. If you now have more equity in your property, you might be in a different mortgage tier and access better rates.
You want to release equity Re-mortgaging can be an effective way to release equity to pay for home improvements, making your property better for you and potentially increasing its value over the longer term.
5
Your circumstances have changed Your original mortgage will have been calculated on your salary at the time. If your salary has increased or you now have two incomes to consider, your affordability criteria could have changed, potentially creating new opportunities.

Work starts on Zurich House solar energy project
W
ork has begun on a solar energy project which could generate approximately 70% of the electricity used at Zurich’s Isle of Man HQ, and has the potential to also provide power for charging electric vehicles. Building work on project - at Zurich House, Isle of Man Business Park - starts with a steel frame being erected at an existing car park and car port, followed by the installation of solar panels. The solar energy system is expected to be built, tested and operational before the end of May 2022. Jason Buckley, Facilities Manager at Zurich on the Isle of Man, recently welcomed representatives from Isle of Man contractors Ardern & Druggan to mark the start of building work. Daphne Caine MHK - Chair of the Island’s Climate Change Transformation Board - was also there and very pleased to see the project making progress and was looking forward to it being operational later this year. She said Zurich’s major commitment to harnessing renewable energy and ensuring

MIND FUL EAT ING So, what is mindful eating and how can it benefit you?
Martin Malone From Simply Nutrition & Coaching Personal Trainer and Sports Nutritionist
48
You may have heard of ‘Mindfulness’, which at its core is about focusing on the present moment and being aware of your thoughts, sensations and accepting your feelings without judgement. Mindfulness is becoming a very popular way of dealing
with stress and accepting your life as it is and being calm and okay with that. It can bring a stillness into your life and reduce the symptoms of many mental health disorders or indeed just help with the daily stresses of life. Mindful eating is very similar to Mindfulness in that it’s about maintaining a conscious awareness of the food you eat and drink. It’s about being fully present ISLE OF MAN PREMIER MAGAZINE
ACTIVE
For many of us, as we go about our busy lives, mealtimes are often rushed or non-existent. How often have you found yourself stuffing half a slice of toast in your mouth as you rush out the door to work, or eating some form of quick breakfast in the car on the way to work? How often do you eat at your desk in work while doing emails, or with your dinner on your lap watching TV? Mindful eating is also about social interaction and enjoying food with the people you love. Somehow many of us have lost that social aspect of eating. Most mealtimes used to be family occasions full of joy and laughter and appreciation for the delicious food and drink in front of you. In some cultures that’s still very much the case but many western cultures are losing that and the incredible joy and social connection it brings. When was the last time your whole family sat down together to eat without distractions – was it Christmas Day maybe? More and more we eat mindlessly, shovelling food down our throats just to get it in without any appreciation for the actual food itself. In my practice I see more and more often that people are eating for emotional reasons to relieve stress, deal with boredom, anxiety, loneliness, loss and sadness. This mindless eating can often lead to very unhealthy eating habits and long-term health problems. Health benefits of mindful eating If you practice mindful eating, you become more aware of your body’s hunger and fullness signals. You will be less likely to overeat and you will become more aware of the energy you are getting from the foods you eat and drink. You will develop a better relationship with food and start to enjoy the colours, smells, textures and the experience of eating it. This then calms you down which increases blood flow to the gut and improves digestion. It can also help address unhealthy eating habits and eliminate mindless emotional eating. You will also find yourself making better food choices as you shop and think about the foods you want to eat. Eating starts to become an enjoyable experience again. and aware of taste, smell, texture, how the food makes you feel and the signals your body sends about satisfaction and fullness. Mindful eating simply requires you to acknowledge the food you eat and all the sensations you observe. For some people it can extend to the process of buying, preparing, and serving the food, as well as eating it, but let’s not get to carried away just yet. To get you started, let’s just focus on eating and drinking it for now. BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS
In my experience, just eating this way for a few meals every week, starts to change how you think about food and you automatically develop a healthier relationship with it. Where to start? Let’s be honest, mindful eating is not about being a robot and doing it perfect all the time but it is about trying to be aware of how you eat, most of the time. Life is fast-paced and sometimes you just have
In my experience, just eating this way for a few meals every week, starts to change how you think about food and you automatically develop a healthier relationship with it.
to run out the door with a piece of toast in your mouth. Mindful eating just requires a little extra planning, such as thinking about your meals for the week and planning your shopping around that, or it can be as simple as preparing your breakfast the night before and getting up a little earlier so you can sit down and enjoy it with your favourite cuppa. Why not start with your next evening meal. As you prepare it, be mindful of the colours, smells and any noises it makes as you cook it (BTW, I don’t mean the ping of the microwave). When you sit down to eat it, make sure you are relaxed and not in a rush. Enjoy every sensation as you slowly chew and enjoy the texture and taste of every mouthful. Be present in the moment. Trust me, if you have never tried mindful eating before, give it a go. It might just open up a whole new world of experiences for you and the health benefits that come with it.

BETTER AND STRONGER THAN EVER Like many other world-class events, the Isle of Man TT was wiped out by the coronavirus pandemic in both 2020 and 2021. During that time, TT organisers have worked hard to restore the world’s greatest road racing spectacle and have also started to implement some fundamental changes that were necessary to secure its long-term future. Now that the long wait is nearly over, here are just some of the things that will make TT 2022 not only better but stronger than ever. 50
1. Absence makes the heart grow fonder
The recent hiatus is only the second time since World War II that the TT was cancelled. The event was already a ‘must see’ for motorsport fans across the globe and since absence only makes the heart grow fonder, you can expect the energy for the 2022 TT to be at full throttle. 8. New medical centre
A new 40ft transporter with eight sliding sides will be located in the paddock and will act as a new, state of the art medical centre to look after the riders in the event of an accident.
5. Extended qualifying sessions
TT Qualifying Week is the Isle of Man TT’s best-kept secret and this year the TT will kick off with an expanded qualifying session on Sunday 29 May. These will run until the final qualifying session on Friday 4 June.
2. TT to be broadcast live for the first time
This year fans will be able to enjoy live TV coverage for the first time. The TT will launch its dedicated digital channel in the spring and will deliver live coverage of all the action from around the world-famous TT course straight to your smart TV or device.
3. All new TT Fan Park
6. Riders to wear CE-approved clothing
All riders will be required to wear CEapproved kit – that includes gloves, leathers, helmet and all equipment - in 2022. The TT is a thrilling experience but it’s also inherently dangerous, and these new measures will help ensure the riders have the best possible equipment to protect themselves in an accident.
Off the track, fans will also be treated to a new TT Fan Park based in Noble’s Park. Over the full 2 weeks, there will be a raft of entertainment on offer including full and uninterrupted coverage of the races showing on large screens, live music, games competitions and more.
10. The RL360 Superstock TT Race returns
7. Bespoke GPS tracking system to be rolled out 4. Greater access to TT heroes
TT organisers have said that fans will have greater access to their TT heroes than ever before, with signing sessions and famous TT prize presentations. BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS
9. Warm-up laps introduced
The race-day programme has been revamped to include a single warm-up lap for competitors, taking place every morning before racing starts. This will replace the midweek qualifying and practice sessions, allowing for more seamless daily schedules with roads opening earlier. As a result, you’ll be able to get out and about a bit more to enjoy what else the Island has to offer.
The TT is rolling out a bespoke GPS tracking system in 2022 to monitor riders and key support vehicles. The system will deliver real-time data from all around the circuit, which will be available to fans via the official iomttraces.com website.
RL360 is once again sponsoring the TT Superstock Race, as it has done since 2002. There’s no other motorsport event like the TT anywhere else in the world and for 2 long weeks fans can revel in thrilling races and world class entertainment - all amongst the beautiful scenery of the Isle of Man. It’s good to be back.

LOCAL TT RIDERS ON TWO OR THREE WHEELS READY FOR THE 2022 START LINE
After a three year break, we are now just weeks away from the Isle of Man TT returning to the Island; where for two weeks the island will transform into a road racers paradise. This year we will see a number of local riders on two and three wheels taking off from the top of Glencrutchery road to take on the Mountain Course. We caught up with a couple of local prospects to talk everything TT. Words & Photos by: Lucas Croydon (Lucas Croydon Photography)

MICHAEL ‘MIGGY’ EVANS At the age of 6 years old, Micheal remembered waking up and watching machines fly past his bedroom window on Bray Hill during morning practice sessions - and from that moment he knew that he was always destined to compete in the TT. He made his debut to the Isle of Man TT in 2018 following his success in the 2017 Manx Grand Prix where he took victory in the Junior & Senior races. Since competing in the TT, Michael has achieved strong results across the classes in which he has entered. In the three year break, like others, Michael has used the break to work on his fitness and keep bike fit. In-between lockdowns on the Isle of Man, Michael raced up Jurby in the local short circuit championship. In that time he had an opportunity to ride for local team HeatTech Racing where he achieved promising results. Off the back of that Michael will now be riding for HeatTech in this years TT on three different machines. Although this is a big change, Michael is used to the machinery he’ll have under him and he’s excited to be working with this new team, where he hopes to continue his strong showings around the 37 3/4 mile course. In this years Supersport class, Michael will be setting off at number 18. With a number of talented riders around him, he feels privileged to have the opportunity to be setting off at 18. When asked what was his favourite part of the course, he responded 95% of it. The 5% that he isn’t such a fan of is the few left handers after Hillberry on the way down towards Signpost Corner & the left and right after Guthrie’s.
BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS
On May 12th Michael will be making his debut at the North West 200, where he hopes that, although it will be a new course to learn, it will give him an opportunity to see where he is at ahead of competing at the TT - as most of the riders he’ll be competing against will also be riding in the TT. The North West 200 will also be a great aid for getting up to speed ahead of practice week at the TT. Michael feels that, although there’s been a three year break, the overall lap times won’t be much different come mid practice week. This year will see a few changes to the TT, one being a morning warm-up lap before the races. Where I am sure this will help many racers and also allow them to trial any changes ahead of the racing.

RYAN & CALLUM CROWE When it comes to the Isle of Man TT & Sidecars, the Crowe name has had much success with their dad Nick Crowe being a 5 time TT winner. Ryan & Callum were brought up around the TT, the paddock & sidecars, and you could say it was inevitable that at some point their paths would cross and after numerous times of asking by Ryan on whether he could have a go of his dad’s sidecar, he got to have that go around Jurby Airfield. From that moment, their goal was set to compete at the Isle of Man TT. They are often asked who decided who was going to drive and who was going to ride as passenger, but in Callum’s words: ‘Ryan is quick in a car’, so he was always going to drive. Together they worked hard on their goal of competing at the TT, and after a few years competing on Island & in the UK on short circuits, they made their debut around the TT course in 2019. It was quite the debut for them that year, where they finished at an astonishing 5th place in their first race around the course. This year the Crowe’s will be bringing two machines to the TT. The Triumph that they used in 2019, and more recently smashed the lap record around Jurby and a new machine in the form of a Honda. The Honda, which is going to be something new to them. That said they both feel that the package’s they’ve put together may give them that all important edge around there local stomping ground. They may
60
have a new machine but they feel more than ever that they’re ready to take on the Mountain Course, and can’t wait to set off on the first evening practice. In terms of learning the course, Ryan believes he was born with the knowledge of racing around the course and that nothing can teach you more than putting the visor down and just getting on with it. Being born and raised on the Island and knowing the course as well as Ryan & Callum do, they feel confident that they’ll be able to continue where they left off in 2019. This year the Crowe’s will be setting off at number 7, which they say they’re feeling extremely lucky to be setting off at, after only completing four racing laps in 2019, but that they feel that they are within the
mix from the off to be fairly competitive in their races. Although the overall aim is to be the fastest & best in the world whilst doing what they both love, where they both aim to surpass their dad’s accomplishments. All the best to all riders competing in this years TT, and I’m sure we are all looking forward to watching some great racing return to the Island’s roads after an extended break.
