edito Spring – something for the mind, body and soul. Is it just us, or does Spring feel like even more of a relief this year? Let’s face it, the world has been a bit, shall we say, chaotic, but somehow the buds keep blooming and the sun keep shining. It’s time to pack winter back into its box and make false promises to ourselves about living healthier lifestyles and embracing the great outdoors.

W

e want nothing but the best for you obviously, so we’ll go along with this and have, therefore, prepared a little selection of inspirational mind, body and soul features for you to guide you on this (let’s be honest - most likely temporary) quest for new beginnings. First up, to feed your mind and sense of justice, look no further than page 20 to be inspired by, ‘10 Female Activists who lead the way.’ ‘These amazing trail blazers have made, ‘extraordinary contributions to history and the development of society,’ If this doesn’t inspire you to try and live a better life then we don’t know what will! To feed your actual body, you should consider the importance of protein. Check out page 51 for Martin Malone’s, ‘Back to Basics,’ advice on this vital food group and discover how, ‘understanding what you eat and how it effects the human body is just as important as eating the food itself.’ Why not take another step in the right direction this spring and take Conister’s, ‘Active Travel Challenge,’ (page 12). You can definitely give yourself a pat on the back for improving your fitness and ditching the car for an eco-friendlier island. Finally, to feed your soul, immerse yourself in Jackie Morrey-Grace’s beautifully haunting play, ‘Asila’s Song,’ (page 30) or soak up the positivity of Jimmy Thistle’s tranquil photography (page 34) which reflects, ‘The beauty in the mundane,’ and reminds us of the quiet power of our landscapes. We promise, you’ll be a new person by the time you’ve reached the end of the magazine. However, if it’s cars, houses and the 2022 IOM TT that feed your soul, then don’t worry, we’ve got that covered too. SR

MARCH/APRIL 2022 become locally extinct on the Isle of Man, particularly birds and plants, and this trend is not slowing down. OPEN ART EXHIBITON: FLY

TRADERS OF THE LOST ARTS

//HODGSON LOOM GALLERY, LAXEY//

Before the age of mass production our communities relied on numerous crafts people to provide them with all of the necessary items needed for life.

The ‘fly’ theme is sure to have attracted a wide variety of interpretations for this annual ‘open’ competition and exhibition from adults, children, professional artists, students and keen amateurs in every medium. Competition winners are chosen by invited judges, but visitors have the opportunity to vote for their own ‘best in show’.

//HOUSE OF MANANNAN, PEEL//

These skilled traders were integral to our island community. As Manx life moved from the rural to the urban these once essential crafts were largely forgotten. This exhibition celebrates these lost skills and encourages conversations about times gone by. Entry free. Donations welcome. www.manxnationalheritage.im 03.03 – 05-03.22

The multi-award-winning Welsh comedian is back, with a brand new live show. In a seven-year break from stand-up, a lot has happened to Rhod. Almost all of it s**t. And just when he thought he’d hit rock bottom, he met a bloke...called John. Raw, personal and brutally honest; no more lies, no more nonsense – this show sees Rhod as he’s never been before. But still hilarious. All tickets from the original/revised date are still valid. If you cannot attend the rescheduled date, please use the Refund Request Form. Host of the smash-hit Have A Word Podcast, star of Live At The Apollo & Roast Battle and Dave’s Best Joke of the Fringe winner Adam Rowe brings his latest standup comedy tour Imperious to the Isle of Man. Over the past few years the world has become extremely polarised and everybody thinks they’re right on every single subject, including Adam. Although he also accepts that he’s probably wrong, because he hasn’t really looked into it and let’s be honest; neither have you. That doesn’t matter though, because he’s a comedian so as long as we all come away from this show having had a laugh, let’s call it a win. His brutally honest, opinionated stand-up and ablibbing makes every performance unique, and hilarious. www.villagaiety.com

LENGE When you are in the business of lending money to companies and consumers, putting your money where your mouth is goes with the territory. If one of your core aims is also to promote sustainable finance, then backing words with action becomes even more important. These days, we often hear the term “greenwashing”. That’s where a company who gives the impression that it’s being empathetic to environmental issues but actually does nothing more than pay lip service to the idea, just to look good. But where others may be falling short with their eco agendas, at Conister, the Island’s premier community bank, staff have gone the extra mile to push their carbon-neutral credentials.

BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

The bank has been a long-standing advocate of Green Finance, funding a wide-range of environmentally focused sectors, such as retro-fit housing, renewable energy, sustainable food production, waste management, electric vehicles and eBike. With transport in mind, Conister are encouraging more people to get involved in what’s known as ‘Active Travel’. The aim of this is to highlight the importance of becoming less reliant on cars where possible, particularly when it comes to those two or three-mile commutes to work. To underpin the Bank’s support for this environmental initiative, Conister recently sponsored an on-Island event titled ‘Enabling Economic Opportunity Through Active Travel’. The event was attended by the Island’s Chief Minister and leading figures from the local business community.

13

UPFRONT

The occasion was fronted by Chris Boardman, the former Olympic cycling champion and the current Greater Manchester Transport Commissioner. He’s had great success in helping de-congest the Manchester road system from the polluting effects of shorter car journeys, by installing an 1800 mile inner city cycle network. Whilst no one is suggesting the Isle of Man requires anything on the scale of Manchester, the stark messaging from the meeting was that from an economic and health viewpoint, the Island needs to take action now to reduce the inexorable increase in traffic. The debate is now on-going as to how the Isle of Man can successfully create a more eco-friendly, active travel-focused transport system. Certainly, becoming less reliant on cars and switching to cycling and walking are lifestyle changes that many of us might agree with, but how often do we actually put these good intentions into practice? This brings us back to Conister. As part of the drive to facilitate this change, the Bank’s Sales Team have embarked on an Active Travel Challenge. The Team thought it would be constructive to show how long a typical commute to work actually takes if you compare going by car, bicycle or on foot. What transpired has been condensed into a lively and informative video, which is now available for viewing on the company’s website. With two of the team driving an electric vehicle, one cycling on an eBike and the other relying on good, old-fashioned shoe leather, the aim of the exercise was

14

“We thought it would be a constructive exercise to actually film the travel experience and the relative time variations between the different transport approaches”

to see who could arrive fastest at the Conister office in Victoria Street, Douglas. The starting point for the “race” was the Shoprite car park in Onchan, a journey of about 2.5 miles. Setting off on a crisp sunny winter’s morning just after 8.30am – during peak commuter time – it was fascinating to see how they all fared. The car and eBike encountered plenty of traffic in Onchan Village and also at Governor’s Bridge and approaching the prom at Broadway. But it quickly became clear that there was only going to be one winner between those using wheels, given the bike’s ability to nip in and out of the queueing traffic. What was even more surprising, however, was the relatively short time gap between the car journey and the walk. ISLE OF MAN PREMIER MAGAZINE

UPFRONT

“It must also be recognised that, currently, many people might feel put off cycling because they don’t feel safe on the roads. Then there is the issue of being appropriately “suited and booted” for work on arrival. This is why discussions around the whole area of Active Travel need to be openly discussed between Government and the business sector. At Conister, we are here to support positive change that will benefit the environment, the economy and our individual health”

“We were pleasantly shocked by what we discovered. It was surprising to see that it took only 12 minutes longer on foot than by car”

For the record, Andrew Moody on the bike arrived at the office in the quickest time – just 12 minutes. This was a full seven minutes ahead of the car with Tom Charmer and Lee Gale onboard. Walker Andy Bass reached the office in 31 minutes – only 12 minutes slower than the motorised transport. This just goes to show that if you live a couple of miles from work, by setting aside an additional 15 minutes in the morning and fifteen minutes in the evening, you could leave the car at home and enjoy a decent walk to the office. Interestingly, if you cycled, you’d actually save time. “We thought it would be a constructive exercise to actually film the travel experience and the relative time variations between the different transport approaches,” explained Conister Bank’s Head of Sales and Associate Director Andy Bass. “We were pleasantly shocked by what we discovered. It was surprising to see that it took only 12 minutes longer on foot than by car.

“Our experiment showed that if you live in a builtup area, like Onchan, it doesn’t really take that much more time to walk than if you use the car. And if you use pedal power, that’s the fastest way of all.”

However, Andy was also quick to explain that the healthy or eco-friendly approach to commuting wasn’t always practical. “We understand that it is isn’t always feasible to leave the car at home, but we want to encourage people to think about making

small changes. If you could walk or cycle to work once or twice a week, or when the weather looks reasonable, then why not give it a go. “It must also be recognised that, currently, many people might feel put off cycling because they don’t feel safe on the roads. Then there is the issue of being appropriately “suited and booted” for work on arrival. This is why discussions around the whole area of Active Travel need to be openly discussed between Government and the business sector. At Conister, we are here to support positive change that will benefit the environment, the economy and our individual health,” Andy added. As Conister continues to support the concept of Active Travel, expect to see more sustainability initiatives emanating from the Bank’s enthusiastic environmentalists in the future.

SANTANDER INTERNATIONAL TO SPONSOR 2022 GRAN FONDO

Boosted by the status of being a UCI Gran Fondo World Championship qualifier, the two-day event will take place on Saturday, July 16 and Sunday, July 17, catering for cyclists of all ages and abilities. The headline event, the 137km Gran Fondo, on the Sunday features over 1,900 metres of climbing as it circumnavigates some of the toughest terrain the Island has to offer. Running concurrently with the Gran Fondo will be the 72km Medio Fondo and the 32km Piccolo Fondo. The Medio is for recreational riders wanting to test themselves that little bit further and features one of the Island’s most challenging ascents (Druidale), as well as one of its very best descents (Tholt-yWill) – offering riders the perfect balance of effort and reward. Aimed at families and beginners, the Piccolo Fondo will wind its way around the flatter northern plains. The UCI Individual Time Trial, taking in the climb of Snaefell, will take centre stage on the Saturday (July 16), covering 9km with 400 metres of climbing. That will be followed by the free-to-enter Minisculo Fondo on the Saturday afternoon in which families and beginners can complete as many laps as they want over an hour around a 1km circuit of the Mooragh Park in Ramsey.

James Geldart, Managing Director of the Isle of Man branch of Santander International, said: “We are delighted to become the main sponsor of such a special event which further enhances the Isle of Man’s reputation as a leading cycling destination. “There will literally be something for everyone across the weekend from participants testing themselves against the course and the clock through the Island’s wonderful countryside to family-friendly racing. “The fact it also forms one of the global qualifying rounds for the 2022 UCI Gran Fondo World Series speaks volumes and brings an added kudos. The Isle of Man has a rich cycling history and has produced world class riders from juniors for so long now. In fact, the Island has produced at least one cyclist of international calibre every decade going back to the 1950s and the modern day crop have proved exceptional. Perhaps this event will inspire the next generation of Manx cyclists.” Two of the Island’s former professional cyclists, Rob Holden and Andrew Roche, have signed up as event ambassadors. Both heavily involved in the local cycling scene after competing professionally in the UK and internationally, Rob is twice British Criterium Champion, a Milk Race Tour of Britain stage winner and represented Great

Britain at three world championships. He is currently working in a part time role as a Cycling Development Officer, a joint venture between IoM Sport and IoM Cycling, with a remit to develop a strategy to increase participation across all forms of cycling whether sport, leisure or transport. Andrew has competed in seven Commonwealth Games, including representing the Isle of Man in the road race and time trial in Glasgow in 2014. He has been involved in cycling for over 30 years, including four years racing professionally in Belgium and four in the UK, and currently runs ‘Watts Up Performance’, a coaching, technique and nutrition advice service for amateur and professional cyclists. James added: “The organisers have put together a truly world class event which promotes high-level competition for masters and amateurs, as well as supporting cycling for all. We are looking forward to working closely with the Grand Fondo team, including Rob and Andrew, and moving forward as a strong alliance.” Entries for the 2022 Gran Fondo Isle of Man, are now being taken. www.granfondoisleofman.com

10 FEMALE ACTIVISTS WHO LEAD THE WAY

International Women’s Day is held annually on 8 March to commemorate progress and continue working towards gender equality across the world. With this in mind, we wanted to take a moment to highlight 10 women leaders and pioneers who have made extraordinary contributions to history and the development of society.

Emmeline Pankhurst

In the early twentieth-century, a group of British women launched a campaign to get women the right to vote. They called themselves the Suffragettes and their leader was Emmeline Pankhurst. Emmeline believed in ‘deeds not words’ and her militant tactics meant that she was no stranger to a prison cell. However even imprisoned, Pankhurst found ways to rebel and inspired fellow inmates to join her in hunger strike. Her campaign finally succeeded in 1928 (when all British women over the age of 21 were finally granted the vote). The victory however was bitter-sweet as Pankhurst herself had died just 2 weeks before.

Rosa Parks

In 1955, Rosa Parks became a powerful symbol for the American Civil Rights Movement when she refused to give up her seat on the bus to a white passenger. Her refusal flouted the strict Alabama segregation laws and signalled to the authorities that Parks was taking a stand – or seat - against institutionalised racism. Her arrest for civil disobedience sparked a massive protest of the bus system and Parks emerged as one of the movements most important political activists. She remained a staunch campaigner for racial equality until her death in 2005.

Obiageli Ezekwesili

In 2014, the former Minister of Education Obiageli Ezekwesili attended a rally in Nigeria and launched the ‘Bring Back our Girls’ campaign. She was responding to a crisis that had taken place in the Chibok region - where Nigerian terrorist group, Boko Haram, had abducted over 270 girls from a boarding school. The campaign went viral and with global attention on the issue, the Nigerian government was forced to act. Incredibly, many were rescued in negotiated settlements but kidnapping remains an issue in the country. Nevertheless, Ezekwesili stands as a beacon of hope and her voice continues to call out the corruption and apathy that endangers young girls.

20

Malala Yousafzai

In 2012 Malala Yousafzai became one of the most famous schoolgirls in the world when she was shot by the Taliban in an attempted assassination. She was just 15 years old. Her crime was speaking out publicly on behalf of girls and their right to an education. In 2008, the Taliban takeover of Malala’s village in Pakistan had severely restricted women’s freedom and girls were forbidden going to school. For her incredible act of bravery, Malala became the youngest person to receive a Nobel Peace Prize and is today one of the world’s most recognisable advocates for education. Sylvia Rae Rivera and Marsha P. Johnson

Sylvia Rae Rivera and Marsha P. Johnson were self-proclaimed drag performers in Greenwich Village and prominent figures in the 1969 Stonewall Uprisings. Following the police raid on Stonewall Inn, the Greenwich Village gay bar, Rivera and Johnson resisted arrest and helped organise a series of protests against sexual discrimination. In the aftermath, the pair emerged as leaders in the Gay Liberation Movement and together founded Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR) - a group dedicated to providing housing and support for homeless LGBT youth and sex workers in New York City.

Mary Brave Bird

Leymah Gbowee

In 2011, Leymah Gbowee was awarded a Nobel Peace prize for her work as a Liberian peace activist, social worker and women’s rights advocate. Her most important work involved bringing women (both Christian and Muslim) together in a nonviolent movement that pressured leaders into ending Liberia’s 14 yearlong Civil War. They achieved this goal in 2003 in what was an historic victory for peace and which paved the way for the election of Africa’s first female head of state.

Waris Dirie

Supermodel and Bond girl, Waris Dirie, was just 5 years old when she was subjected to female genital mutiliation (FGM). FGM has no health benefits and in the days following the procedure, many girls die from blood loss or infection. In 1996, Dirie used her platform to speak out against the inhumane practice and directed worldwide attention to the issue. Since then she has founded several medical centres offering women reconstructive surgery and founded the Desert Flower Foundation to deliver education. It is her hope that by spreading awareness of FGM, we can eradicate it once and for all.

In the 1970s, Native Americans were engaged in a series of protests against the American Government over broken treaties and colonial policies that affect Native communities. During this struggle, a Sicangu Lakota teenager known as Mary Brave Bird joined the American Indian Movement (AIM) and quickly emerged as one of its central figures. She participated in many high profile events, including the occupation of the Bureau of Indian Affairs headquarters in Washington and the Wounded Knee Occupation and later wrote her book Lakota Woman, to draw attention to the plight of Native Americans.

Gloria Steinem

Gloria Steinem came to national attention when she infiltrated Hugh Hefner’s New York Playboy Club as a freelance journalist to report on the working conditions. Her explosive expose – ‘I was a Playboy Bunny’ – revealed the sexist, overworked and underpaid life of the ‘bunny’ waitresses. Steinman went on to report on other progressive issues, particularly around the women’s liberation movement, and soon made a name for herself as a trailblazing feminist in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.

Greta Thunberg

Few could have predicted that when 15-year-old Greta Thunberg began her school climate strike outside the Swedish Parliament in 2018, it would lead to worldwide protests. Regardless of whether you agree with Thunberg’s brand of activism, few can deny her influence in elevating the discourse on climate change. Today she is regarded as a symbol of Youth empowerment and the voice of a movement that forced world leaders to finally take the climate threat seriously. It was a goal researchers and activists had been working towards for decades. BECAUSE QUALITY MATTERS

Asila’s Song

- a haunting tale of love, loss and revenge WORDS Suzy Holland IMAGES Jackie Morrey-Grace & Amore du Plessis

You’ll probably recognise the name Jackie Morrey-Grace, a local woman well-known for her performance poetry, her success in the Manx Litfest Short Story and Poetry Slams, her trombone playing in various bands and with Han-FX, JorDMC & the Innuendo Orchestra, and as the founder of charity Without Wings The Manx Autoimmune Arthritis Trust. And this incredibly versatile writer/performer has now committed Asila’s Song, her one-act play for one, in verse, to the page.

30

ISLE OF MAN PREMIER MAGAZINE

CULTURE

“It was written to be performed,” Jackie tells me, “but after its first outing at the Amphitheatre on Douglas Head in 2019 so many people asked me for the words that I realised that for Asila to live on, I had to write it down. Which proved interesting!” There are just three characters: Asila, Angel Asila and the ‘ex’. To try and summarise, Asila is a ghost, haunting her ‘ex’ who one way or another is probably responsible for her death. Angel Asila haunts Ghost Asila in turn – almost like her conscience - calling on her to forgive her ex so she, Asila, can be reunited with her bones at the bottom of the sea. It is, says Jackie, “a classic battle between light and dark” but whereas in most battles there are clear winners, not so in Asila’s Song: by weaving a haunting, intriguing story with the interaction between the three characters laid out clearly on the page, combined with deliberate ambiguity, when I read the final scene I wondered if there were any winners at all. The influence of Manx folklore and myth is there but Jackie is adamant that Asila’s Song, like her earlier book of poetry On Ravensdale Hill, is completely fictional. Jackie says she is bound to the earth of the Isle of Man, walking the hills, glens and coastline in all seasons and all weathers. “I call myself an extreme walker,” she tells me. “I love the spooky dead trees in Ballaugh Glen and love nothing more than being out on my own on the hills around the north where I live, or on the coast, preferably in driving rain”. It is this that reverberates in Asila’s Song, echoing the crashing waves and buffeting winds. Jackie admits that her performance style is often high velocity, and she is fond of intricate rhymes and rhythms which vary in intensity. Capturing the drama of Asila on the page required some thought: “I found the easiest way was to make Asila’s Songinto a one act play, 12 different scenes in different locations,” Jackie explains. “Ghost Asila is the first you see and hear, on the left of the page, Angel Asila is ‘written’ on the right hand side of the page, and the ‘ex’ appears in the centre and has his back to the audience.” The book is a transcription of the performance and the stage directions not only build the momentum between the three characters but also add to what Jackie describes as the ‘incessant din’, spelling out both real and imagined violence.

“Jackie admits that her performance style is often high velocity, and she is fond of intricate rhymes and rhythms which vary in intensity.”

Although I wasn’t able to see the Asila’s Song debut on Douglas Head, there are some advantages to reading the play-poem first, a bit like reading a book before seeing the film: the reader’s own imagination takes over. For me Ghost Asila is a wispy transparent figure who becomes more substantial as her words get louder and the sentiments more violent but read it and make your own mind up – as I say, the story has plenty of ambiguity! If you’d like to see Asila’s Song performed then there will be a chance soon. For various reasons, not unconnected to Covid, there’s not been a ‘proper’ book launch but that’s now pencilled in for June at the Erin Arts Centre. The exact date is yet to be confirmed, but keep an eye out for details in future issues of Gallery, on social media and the local press. And in the meantime you can buy Asila’s Song for £10 (20% of each purchase goes to Manx Wild Bird Aid) from Bridge Bookshop in Port Erin and Ramsey, from Quirky.im, and direct from Jackie at jackiemorreygrace.weebly.com

W IL D W AN DERINGS Images of the Isle of Man by Jimmy Thistle

IMAGES Jimmy Thistle WORDS Suzy Holland

It’s sometimes hard to keep up with the creativity inspired by the Isle of Man particularly over the last couple of years when lockdowns and isolation periods have kept many inside and many others out and about exploring the delights the coast and hills have to offer. Jimmy Thistle is one of the latter - a new name amongst Island photographers (he moved here permanently in July 2020), his exhibition Wild Wanderings is now on at Artea in Port Erin.

34

If you are one of the hundreds who follow Jimmy on social media, you’ll already know that he is a recovering alcoholic (18 months sober by the time you read this) who credits the Island with giving him a fresh start, not just in his recovery but also in rekindling his love of photography.

from Glasgow. “After a breakup, and a break down, I came to the Island to join my parents and my brother and his family. I’d visited, of course, but in early 2020 I took the plunge and moved over. I thought then, and know now, that it was the right decision.”

“The Isle of Man is where I need to be,” says Jimmy, who’s originally

It’s hard to comment on the positivity of the photographs in Wild

Wanderings without referencing the dark place he’s come from. “Although I studied photography and worked as a commercial photographer for a while, at one time I was also tied to a desk working long hours in a bank. I knew it wasn’t for me, and my mental health and relationships suffered.” His family could see how Jimmy was plummeting down into an alcohol-fuelled abyss and by the

middle of 2020 persuaded him to move, and, at the same time, get sober. “I started my Instagram page @recovery_ jimmy as a form of therapy,” he says. “I took out my phone and decided to post a selfie a day for 500 days.” Those 500 days ended, by sheer co-incidence (“it wasn’t planned,” he laughs) on 31 December 2021 and if you scroll back to the beginning you can see just how Jimmy’s changed – not just in his ‘wild man of Borneo’ hair and beard but also in the contentment which radiates from his face.

The new page is different – and has attracted attention of people who like photography, some who love the actual places I photograph and others who, like me, love abandoned buildings and interesting angles.”

“Although I studied photography and worked as a commercial photographer for a while, at one time I was also tied to a desk working long hours in a bank. I knew it wasn’t for me, and my mental health and relationships suffered.”

“I’m not saying it was easy,” Jimmy says, “but I’ve found the tranquillity and positivity inherent in the very ground I was walking and working as a gardener has overtaken any need to dull my senses. And I’ve realised that I need to be outside and I need to record the things I see around me.” Which brings us neatly to Wild Wanderings. Jimmy sees what he calls ‘the beauty in the

BACK TO BASICS: PROTEIN

ACTIVE

Can you eat too much protein? If you overeat protein, it is simply converted into glucose in the body and used for energy or stored as fat. However, protein isn’t easily converted to glucose and fat because it has a high Thermic Effect (this is the amount of energy require to digest and store excess protein as energy). Its thermic effect is much higher than that of carbohydrates and fat. In fact, 30% of the protein’s energy goes toward digestion and assimilation of protein, therefore, protein can be a useful tool for someone trying to lose excess body fat. There is a myth that too much protein can damage the kidneys. In healthy people, normal protein intake within the ranges described above poses no health risk. In fact, multiple studies of healthy adults have shown that a protein intake as high as 3g per kilogram of body weight does not impair kidney health. Obviously, someone with impaired kidney function may need to limit protein intake as instructed by their doctor.

Martin Malone From Simply Nutrition & Coaching Personal Trainer and Sports Nutritionist

In the last article, of my ‘Back to Basics’ series, I covered the second of our 3 food groups, Fat. In this edition, I will cover the third and last food group, Protein. Proteins are molecules made up of individual amino acids. Amino acids are the building blocks of all life on earth and they are used in many different ways to ensure the healthy functioning of the body. There are 20 amino acids present in the body and they are broken down into 2 main groups: Essential Amino Acids (or EAAs) which cannot be synthesized or produced by the body. There are 9 of them and we must get them from the foods we eat. Nonessential Amino Acids are produced or synthesised by our own bodies so we don’t need to get them from the food we eat although at times of stress, we may need to consume more of them to assist the body. Why is it important to get enough protein? The body breaks down the protein into individual amino acids which then float around in the bloodstream to be used where they are needed. They help transport various substances throughout the body and aid with growth and repair. They help produce important molecules such as enzymes, hormones, neurotransmitters and antibodies to fight off disease. Therefore, without an adequate amount of protein in our diet, our body is unable to function properly and repair itself.

Where do you get your proteins from? Protein is found in almost every food you eat but in different quantities. Afterall, proteins / amino acids are the building blocks of all life. Some proteins found in food are “complete”, meaning they contain all the 9 essential amino acids needed in the body. Animalbased foods such as meat / poultry, fish, eggs and dairy foods, are good sources of complete protein. However, most plant proteins are incomplete, meaning they are lacking one or more of the essential amino acids, so plant-based foods such as fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts and seeds often lack one or more of the essential amino acids. However, for someone who does not eat animal-based foods, this is generally not a problem provided they eat a wide variety of plant protein sources to ensure they get all the essential amino acids needed. For example, if you eat black beans and rice together, you create a combination that’s complete containing all 9 essential amino acids. These are called Complimentary Proteins and there are many such combinations. Whether you get your protein from animal-based sources, plant-based sources, or both, it’s important to choose good quality wholefood sources. The Final Word You now have all 4 articles in the ‘Back to Basics’ series – ‘A New Beginning A New You’ in the Summer 2021 ‘NEW’ issue, ‘CARBS’ in the Summer 2021 ‘BRIGHT’ issue, and ‘FAT’ in the 2021 ‘WINTER’ issue. View online: https://issuu.com/galleryisleofman Understanding what you eat and how if effects the human body is just as important as eating the food itself. Knowledge gives you the tools you need to make better food choices. Afterall, we only get one body so why not look after and get the most from it. In my next article I will cover the topic of ‘Mindful Eating’ and how it can help you become healthier and lose weight.

How much protein do you need? The basic recommendation to avoid protein deficiency is 0.8g per kilogram of body weight. For example, a 70kg adult would need to consume 56g per day just to prevent deficiency. However, to maintain optimal health and for those with a physical job or partaking in hard physical exercise, anywhere from 1.4 to 2.2g per kilogram of bodyweight is required to ensure an adequate pool of amino acids in the bloodstream. So, in other words, we need a small amount of protein to survive, but to thrive and stay healthy, we need a lot more. BEHIND Words & Illustration: Russ Atkinson

I still consider power steering and electric windows to be modern conveniences, but then my car is 28 years old. Technology has come a very long way in the last three decades, making my humble classic look like a steam traction engine. Here’s a look at some of the truly mod. cons. lurking under the skin of your new car. Autnomous Emergency Braking Lane Assist Most often utilising sensors mounted around the vehicle, often in the rear-view mirror, lane assist systems recognise road markings and determine whether or not you’re about to depart the road, rather than simply taking the current motorway exit. The systems’ response to imminent danger range from audible, visible or haptic feedback all the way up to taking control of the steering to set you back on the right course. The latter is probably safest if you’ve fallen asleep - I’m not sure about you, but I’m never impressed by being woken by my alarm clock, let alone being greeted from my slumber by impending doom and going into panic-mode.

Satellite Aided Transmissions What does that even mean, and why would you even need it? It’s a technology so extravagant you won’t be surprised to read that it’s used in Rolls Royce’s Wraith (the most powerful Rolls ever produced, no less). Using GPS technology, the Wraith’s eight, yes, eight-speed ZF gearbox pre-selects the next gear based on the upcoming terrain and the speed at which you’re approaching. In short, Wraith knows what gear you’ll need to be in before you do. Mind. Blown.

If you’re into dashcam videos (and, well, why wouldn’t you be?) you’ve probably witnessed some of the incredible evasive manoeuvres undertaken by Teslas where the car has foreseen the hazard, usually an out of control vehicle or red light runner approaching from an absurd angle at ridiculous pace, before any human could’ve managed to. Using technologies such as RADAR, LIDAR (light detection and ranging, rather than RADAR’s use of radio signals) and stereo cameras, computers can often detect dangerous situations quicker than humans and step in, as is the case with autonomous emergency braking, but equally they’re capable of standing down when they’ve deemed the driver to be back in control of the vehicle.

Wireless Vehicle Charging All hail the possible eventual solution to EV range limitations! Using a scaled-up version of the same inductivecharging technology you might use to wirelessly charge your phone, you could be able to forget about having to plug in your plug-in-vehicle altogether, soon. It works by aligning a pair of magnetic coils - one vehicle mounted, one beneath the vehicle - that can transfer energy through free-air. Imagine these charging coils being positioned underneath parking spaces to charge your car while you’re not using it, be that at home or in a car park, or better still just beneath the road’s surface so that you can top up your batteries on the way to your nest destination. It’s like a modern twist on getting your home electricity ‘key’ charged at the post office.

Adaptive Lighting Pioneered by Volkswagen Audi Group, tested on their Audi R18 Ultra prototype race car and initially outlawed in the USA due to an archaic law, modern headlights don’t even need the driver to switch from high to low beam. It isn’t only the brightness that’s adjusted automatically, with sensors able to rotate the beams to better illuminate the road ahead when cornering. Coupled with advancements in LED technology, filament bulbs just can’t hold a candle to modern headlights.

Harry Payne and Mark Wilkes – World Championship contenders and TT Newcomers for 2022. Who are they? What’s happening in a shed on the Isle of Man? Contributor: Lucas Croydon THE HISTORY Harry Payne and Mark Wilkes have each made their name known in the sidecar paddock individually, before teaming up at end of 2020 to forge an enviable partnership. After Mark won the world championship in 2019 with his former teammate ‘Tim Reeves’, He took up the opportunity of parenting multiple TT winner Dave Molyneux, however due to Covid restrictions this did not come to fruition. Harry however competed locally and picked up his first IOM Centre Championship in his debut year as a sidecar driver. Harry and Mark first teamed up for the Sidecar BurnUp at Lydden in October 2020, and quickly established themselves as the “ones to watch”. Over the winter of 2020 and during many nights in the garage a plan for 2021 was hatched and an assault on the British F2 championship was agreed. They did fantastic by finishing a tremendous 2nd overall in the series and actually winning the ‘cup’ catergory. They scored ‘cup class’ wins in every race they finished and this proved the pairing were set for great things.

54

The solid season was backed up with 3 wildcards in the FIM World Championship on different machinery, the latter being a win in Estoril Portugal in October 2021 on a borrowed bike! These great achievements stood out particularly to one of their sponsors DAO Holdings (Sommai Nantakoon) who then decided to up her involvement considerably, forming the new team DAO1886 (pronounced Dow 18 86)... the new team is cool collaboration between DAO Racings Sommai Nantakoon, and her close friends James and Diane of 1886 Bar, Grill and Cocktail Lounge in Douglas. Harry and Mark, under this new banner, will be lead ambassadors for the official DAO Racing Team (formerly Silicone Racing; 2019 Senior TT winners with Dean Harrison). The new team operates from an Isle of Man workshop and is managed by Linda Alton-Heath well known for her work with Andreas Racing Association at Jurby and Klaus Klaffenbocks (Klaffi) event management company RP Events. The new team will contest the 2022 FIM World Championship and 3wheeling.media sidecar races at the 2022 IOM TT.

THE TT Mark has previously podiumed at the TT in 2017 with Tim Reeves (Klaffi / Carl Cox Honda); Harry whilst passengering for Michael Jackson was fastest newcomer in the 2018 TT, moving to Dave Molynuex in 2019 where he ended his passengering career after a quite disastrous TT . 2020 saw Harry move to the driving seat and he hasn’t looked back. This year Harry will make his driving debut at the TT and as a newcomer he has a steep learning curve ahead, however this will be aided by his 2 TT’s as a passenger no doubt. Harry understands the need to respect the course and will be taking a more relaxed approach to the event, with the aim of learning as much as possible. Harry’s passion is racing and competing at the TT “I have been following the TT since a child, watching old tapes and DVDs with my father. When I stared in road racing only 7 years ago I knew I wanted to race on the iconic IOM TT course. The IOM TT is the premier event for road racing and I want to race against the best people on the best machinery on the best track in the world”. Mark first raced at the TT in 2017 “I am really looking forward to racing at the TT again; teaming up with a driver like Harry with our new DAO1886 LCR outfit the overall package is strong and I am feeling confident of 2 strong results and an enjoyable TT in 2022.”

“I HAVE BEEN FOLLOWING THE TT SINCE A CHILD, WATCHING OLD TAPES AND DVDS WITH MY FATHER. WHEN I STARED IN ROAD RACING ONLY 7 YEARS AGO I KNEW I WANTED TO RACE ON THE ICONIC IOM TT COURSE.”

THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP In 2021, Payne and Wilkes received support from DAO while running as Team 45, but this year the team will run a full new livery as it tackles an entire season on the world scene, under the banner of DAO1886, as mentioned earlier. “We were so pleased with the incredible performance of Team 45 last year that we decided to up our involvement for 2022, which has led us to this exciting new venture,” explained Sommai Nantakoon, ““I am looking forward to this with all my heart. I am putting in 100% with my new team and I’m happy to share this experience with my best friends at 1886.” Team manager Linda Alton-Heath is also looking forward to a new challenge. “I feel very honoured to have been asked to manage the new DAO1886 sidecar team,” she said, “We have some very exciting things in store for the year ahead and I can’t wait to get started. I have every faith in Harry and Mark and with Sommai’s passion and enthusiasm we are definitely a team with a vision” Payne, meanwhile, admits he can’t wait to get going. “It’s fantastic to have the backing of an experienced and successful team and I’m honoured to be in this position, ““I believe this new partnership with DAO1886 will massively help us achieve our goals and I can’t wait to hit the ground running when the World Sidecar Championship kicks-off at Le Mans in April.” Competing in the world championship will see the DAO1886 team travel through Europe, racing as support to both world superbikes and world endurance events. The new team have a busy 4 weeks ahead preparing both bikes for the season, which commences with a week of testing late March at the Val de Vienne circuit in France.

Once the preserve of aristocrats, respected world leaders and the Sultan of Brunei, around the turn of this century Bentley bigwigs decided that their vehicles were taking too much market share from stablemate Rolls Royce, prompting the decision to introduce a mass-produced, rather than coach-built, model to their range. In 2003 that model arrived in the form of the Continental GT, with its disappointingly plastic grille and bargain-basement price tag of around a mere £110,000, making it the most accessible Bentley in the marque’s history. Add to that a top speed of 208mph according to a road test carried out by a very prominent British magazine, the departure from that 6.75 litre V8 that originally powered Noah’s Ark in favour of Volkswagen’s barmy W12 engine (essentially two VR6 motors in one) with a couple of turbos bolted on for good measure, and a clock on the dashboard courtesy of Breitling and you had a recipe for converting the G in gansta-rapper from Mercedes’ G-Wagen to Bentley’s GT. Why put your name down for an old-fashioned looking Arnage Red Label when you could get this newly-designed Bentley model for sixty G’s less, after all? The spec on these cars is expectedly huge, with seats that’ll massage you and I’m absolutely convinced that the heated seats go up to six, which isn’t quite a This is Spinal Tap homage, but it still begs the question; why not just make 5, warmer? (See Gallery issue 48, December 2008). It’s got a staggering 550 to 600 horsepower depending on the version, has aged incredibly gracefully and you can now pick one up for just fifteen grand. Fifteen grand! In all honesty, I thought they were probably a half decent buy at £40k a couple of years ago. With depreciation as epic as the rate at which it’ll consume petrol, what have you got to lose? Far less than anyone selling a one-owner example, that’s for sure. If one wishes to waft effortlessly across Europe in a heartbeat and isn’t afraid to plunge a few quid into fixing things when one’s vehicle becomes a bit squiffy, now’s your chance. Don’t get me wrong; I don’t reckon that a Continental GT is going to make a good investment (although a similarly-priced Arnage might well do, especially the rarer BMW-engined version and one) but if you’re willing to take a punt on a luxury car for the price of a modern hatchback the Continental GT could be worth investigating. Very, very carefully.

have seen things that only two people have ever seen and might not wish to see again - there seem to be some honestlooking bargains to be had. As you might expect, there are a few with intergalactic mileages being advertised, but that’s probably a testament to Volkswag... I mean Bentley’s excellent engineering prowess, so with that in mind maybe go for one with under 100k on it in the hope that it goes for another 100,000 miles without too much bother. At the time of writing, there were 54 Continental GTs and Flying Spurs for sale on Autotrader for under £20,000 and I’ll be genuinely surprised if they get much cheaper - at this price you might as well run them into the ground or break them for spares when something fails in a spectacularly expensive fashion. Even if you aren’t looking for a potentially risky grand-tourer at a great price, it’s worth perusing them on Autotrader purely to amuse yourself by admiring the vast array of hilariously crap number plates attached to some of them (D11YMO and M1 KFC are two of my favourites).

“STEER CLEAR OF ANYTHING ON AUTOTRADER WITH A DUBIOUS DUOTONE VINYL WRAP THAT COULD’VE ONCE BEEN OWNED BY A DIVISION ONE FOOTBALLER - JUST IN CASE THE REAR SEATS HAVE SEEN THINGS THAT ONLY TWO PEOPLE HAVE EVER SEEN AND MIGHT NOT WISH TO SEE AGAIN” With fixed-price servicing plans available from dealers in the UK, notably one that’ll provide one major and one minor service for £1,620 (also payable in monthly instalments of £90), munching up miles in one of these British-ish bruisers might not be as financially painful as you’d expect. Of course, if it does all go pear-shaped you’ll probably be able to claw back all of the money you’ve shovelled in over time by parting it out, if you can be bothered. Buy one, cross your fingers, enjoy a warm massage and some ice-cold AC, ignore the frequency with which you have to fill it up and run it into the ground, I say. Tell everyone you’ll be replacing it with an electric car in 2040 when it finally reaches its end of life anyway so it might as well continue being driven until then, and keep an eye out for environmental activists waiting to hurl balloons filled with red paint at you. Sure, there are plenty of excellent used cars out there in the sub-£20k bracket, but none of them with the slightly watered-down prestige of Crewe’s second finest brand. Having extolled the virtues of meagre-priced modern Bentley though, personally I rate the kingfisher blue 1992 Bentley Turbo R (pictured) that’s on Autotrader at just £8,500 as an excellent way to see absolutely zero financial return on investment. But it does look a million dollars... Oof.

Steering clear of anything on Autotrader that looks ‘murdered-out’ in black on black on black with drug-dealer black window tints, or anything with a dubious duotone vinyl wrap that could’ve once been owned by a division one footballer - just in case the rear seats
