There are calories in almost everything you eat but the burning question is, how many calories do you need? In my experience, that’s the one thing people need the most help with and when they fully understand it their relationship with food starts to bloom.

If you have read my previous Gallery articles on the 3 Macros - Protein, Carbohydrates (Carbs) & Fat, you will know that Protein and Carbs each have 4 calories per gram and Fat has 9 calories per gram. Therefore, if you know how many grams of each of the 3 macros you are eating every day, you can easily work out how many calories (kcal) you are consuming. This is the first step in understanding how many calories you need. For example – 400g of carbs (1,600 kcal) + 150g of protein (600 kcal) + 80g of fat (720 kcal) = 2,920 kcal

You now know how to calculate the calories in food but how does your body actually use those calories? This is what’s referred to as your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE), which has 3 component parts:

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR): Your BMR is the calories you burn each day to keep your brain and all your bodily functions running optimally. Think of your BMR as the calories you need to ‘keep the lights on’. Your BMI represents approx. 60% of your TDEE.

Physical Exercise and Non-Exercise Activity

Thermogenesis (NEAT):

NEAT is the number of calories you burn through daily activity and movement (walking, fidgeting etc) that is not regarded as planned physical exercise. The combination of NEAT and planned physical exercise (running, cycling, weightlifting etc) represents approx. 30% of your TDEE.

Thermic Effect of Food (TEF):

Approx. 10% of the total calories you eat are used to digest the actual food itself. However, the 10% is an average. Fat TEF is approx. 3%, so requiring
