In fact, the whole island has become a bit of a mecca for athletic prowess, as the rugby club celebrates its 150th anniversary, Tom Sinden’s book, ‘Manx Hills,’ inspires us to dig out our walking boots, and undefeated Manx boxer, Mathew Rennie gives us a snapshot into his boxing journey on page 66, reminding us that boxing is not all head shots and powerful punches, but a sport that also teaches respect and self discipline. If you’re looking for a challenge that is, em, less challenging than a punch in the face, then it’s not too late to sign up for the Zurich Lighthouses Challenge on July 2nd (page 16) which offers three different cycling courses of varying distances, and promises to improve your mental health as well as your fitness. If, however, you’d rather hear the roar of a motorbike than a push bike then why not book a ticket to the Official TT Mercury Club hospitality suite and enjoy the expanded ten race, six-day programme (see page 72 for the details).

Look, we get it, this is all a bit too energetic for some of you, let’s not forget that spring is also a time to sip wine outdoors (see page 12 for our spring time favourites), read a book – yes, we also have a couple of those up our sleeve on page 26 and, you’ve guessed it, we have even thought of what you might want to wear while you sip the wine (page 37).

MANX LOTTERY TRUST SUPPORTS CROSSROADS WITH NEW MENTAL HEALTH PROJECT

Crossroads Isle of Man has been awarded £100,000 from Manx Lottery Trust’s 2022 Thematic Funding programme which will allow them to provide psychological support for carers and their families.

This is a new project launched by Crossroads designed to support carers and their loved ones with mental health and any trauma they may be dealing with. The grant will fund the employment and training of two mental health workers who will be solely dedicated to provide psychological support and a safe space for carers.

One of the roles has been filled by Carlie Maddrell, a Listening Practitioner, meaning support can now be offered to those in need.

The service will also act as a signposting service to other organisations, including Third Sector organisations such as Isle Listen and Cruse Bereavement, as well as statutory services such as CAMHS and the Community Mental Health Service for Adults. Crossroads will work together with these organisations to ensure carers and their families receive the relevant support.

Crossroads provides support to carers and people with care needs on the Isle of Man and has been doing so since being established in 1988.

As part of the initiative, the new mental health support workers will receive accredited mental health and trauma training, mediation and intensive interaction training, and also counselling training.

ISLE OF PLAY TO PAVE THE WAY WITH NEW PLAY PATHS

A local charity has received a substantial funding boost from Manx Lottery Trust’s Thematic Funding Programme which will allow it to provide additional support for children with behavioural and developmental issues.

The £50,000 grant will enable Isle of Play the opportunity to deliver a new outdoor initiative for children aged 5 to 16 to help them build resilience required to cope with and manage stress in challenging circumstances.

Isle of Play was founded in 2018 and is an advocate for all children on the Isle of Man to fulfil their right to play by offering an array of fun and stimulating activities.

The new Play Paths project will support young people with a wide range of behavioural and developmental issues, many of whom may have been deprived of play and positive early childhood experiences. The scheme will be delivered outdoors at either the Woodland Forest School site or Lester’s Yard Adventure Playground facility.

Whether they’re delivered in group sessions or one to one, the overall aim is to take a long-term approach over a school year and beyond as the charity recognises that short term interventions cannot address the children’s specific needs. The sessions on offer will include den building, tree climbing, cooking on an open fire and imaginative play such as playing house or mothering a doll.

Springtime

Spring is here and brings with it an element of excitement among winemakers throughout the northern hemisphere. Grapevines are perennial plants; they bloom during the spring and summer and die back during the autumn and winter, growing again from rootstock the following spring.

Bud burst is a glorious moment for winemakers everywhere. It is the time of year when grape vines awake from their winter rest. It occurs when the average daytime temperature rises above 10 degrees Celsius, the temperature below which vines are not able to grow. The buds are very delicate at this time and can easily be destroyed by localised spring frost or hailstorms. The Loire Valley and Chablis in northern France were badly affected in both 2021 and 2022 with some producers losing up to 40% of their crop due to spring frosts occurring after bud burst. The use of candles in the vineyard helps but is a labour intensive and costly practice. In 2016, some vineyards in both Beaujolais and Burgundy lost 100% of their buds, meaning some growers lost their whole annual income.

Spring is also a time when we reach for a bottle of chilled white wine to enjoy in the early evening sunshine. A glass of light, fresh white can be just the answer at the end of a long day.

We’ve picked out a selection of our Spring time favourites with their bright labels that shout ‘summer is on the way’.

Vinho Verde Leme Avesso

This Vinho Verde is produced from the indigenous Avesso grape. Avesso translates as reverse or opposite, and the wines it produces are different from most Vinho Verde as the Avesso has lower acidity and

a fuller mouthfeel. This is a very refreshing style of wine with stone fruit flavours and a streak of minerality running through it.

L’Orange de l’ou

This is a very appealing orange wine produced on an organic estate in the Roussillon region of the south of France from Muscat grapes. Muscat is normally associated with sweet wines in this area but this is bone dry. The vinification is characterised by a long, skin contact maceration lasting for four months in cool temperatures of between 4 and 5°C, to extract the delicate orange colour. It is then fermented in terracotta egg shaped amphorae. The ovoid shape sets the lees into perpetual motion, naturally accentuating the varietal aromas and minerality, while requiring minimum intervention from the winemaker. It has aromas of candied orange peel, citrus and a touch of curry spice followed by delicious notes of grapefruit, peach and delicate ginger lead to a long, crisp finish. If you’ve yet to be convinced by orange wines, this will certainly do it for you!

Ailala Treixadura and Souson

This pair of wines hail from Galicia in north-west Spain, where the climate is not dissimilar to the Isle of Man! It is influenced by the Atlantic and is by far the wettest part of Spain. It is a region known more for white wines than red, but the red wines are also worth a try. Both of these are from indigenous varieties, the white Treixadura

and the red from Souson. The Treixadura has vibrant aromas of white flowers, apricot and lemon peel followed by a wonderful textured palate with flavours of white peach and apricot beautifully balanced with a citrus freshness.

The Souson grapes grow in granite soils, which give a freshness to the wine. With its aromas and flavours of cherry, cinnamon, violet and wild red berries, it is also delicious when served lightly chilled.

There is no direct translation for ‘Ailala’ but it is a cry of joy, the Galician word for ‘Ole’.

So we’re going to open a bottle, raise our glasses and shout ‘Ailala’!

Dentist Sita Kapur returns to the Abbey Dental team

Abbey Dental is excited to announce that Dentist Sita Kapur has returned to the Island and has re-joined our dental team in Ballasalla. In 2021 Sita moved with her family to Portugal, so they could be together during the times of COVID travel restrictions. Now Sita, her husband Paulo and two children have settled back into their home and school on the Island and are enjoying meeting old friends. Sita has been greatly missed by patients and colleagues alike and she is so happy to welcome patients both new and familiar to receive treatment and advice at Abbey Dental.

Sita is passionate about preventative dentistry and understands that establishing good oral hygiene routines from then outset is key to reducing the need for dental restorations. Her dedication to enhancing smiles using minimally invasive techniques and educating everyone how to maintain those pearly whites, is second to none. Sita regularly updates her dental knowledge attending top international courses so that her dentistry is always evidenced based.

been to provide a welcoming space that’s a key part of the community with friendly faces who are there to help, but also to pop in and say “hi” to. Its prime location has lent itself to this.’

Early owner and manager, Michael Horsthuis and Elaine Prince of Elaine’s Peel Florist respectively, started the process by turning the store into a blooming success by selling hundreds of bespoke bouquets a week due to being a popular choice for those visiting the former hospital nearby.

‘There would be hundreds of buckets, full of flowers lining the outside of the shop with it reaching down to where the chippy is today. The store would be filled with them too!’ said Mr Horsthuis, whose family set up Robinson’s Limited in 1886.

Flowers are still to this day a huge draw to the store, as they are hand-prepared by a team of florists at Cooil Road and dispatched to The Terrace store and Shoprite, along with all Island and UK delivery.

Elaine, who started managing the store in 1977, said: ‘The Terrace store was just the best. It was busy,

vibrant and very much community-spirited where people shopped daily.’

Continuing this legacy, was Diane Burkitt, Linda Halsall, Dave Clarke, the late Sue Hills and current manager Neil Pitts. All of which had a significant impact as managers on the store’s transformation and on the community that has continuously passed through its door.

Today the team consists of 17 members with a number being college and high school students.

Store manager, Neil Pitts, said: ‘It’s been an honour to have been given the opportunity to manage The Terrace over the last four years.

‘There’s a great atmosphere here and it’s always good catching up with our regular customers.’

He added: ‘It’s been wonderful seeing all the changes the store has been through over the last few years, and I’m excited to see what else the next 50 years brings to The Terrace.’

The Zurich Lighthouses Challenge

After the dark and cold months of winter, the spring offers us all a chance at new beginnings. Former first lady of the United States Lady Bird Johnson once said, “where flowers bloom, so does hope”. The daffodils are already at full bloom along the roadsides, while pops of colour continue to appear all around us, bringing light into our lives.

Many of us start the year with resolutions and good intentions, but it can be hard to keep them up when the sun is hiding away, and the nights seem to take up much of the day. However, the longer days and the warmer weather of spring are an opportunity for us to shake off some of the cobwebs that have lingered over the winter and set ourselves some new challenges to test ourselves.

Perhaps it’s a project that you have been putting off for weeks, or maybe it’s a new fitness target that you really

want to achieve. Maybe your New Year’s resolution to go to the gym more is beginning to suffer, and you need a new goal to help get you back on track. As spring blooms around us, now is the time to take on something new.

The Zurich Lighthouses Challenge on 2 July could be that big goal for you. With its three different courses of varying distances, there is something for everyone and you can set the challenge that best suits you. Thanks to the amazing support of the Castletown Commissioners, all three of this year’s routes will start in the island’s ancient capital in front of the picturesque Castle Rushen.

Are you looking for something big? Then why not go the whole hog and try the Full Circle route that covers 100 miles of the Isle of Man’s roads. There will be stunning scenery on show as you travel clockwise around the island,

taking in tough climbs to Cregneash and up the Sloc, as well as some flatter terrain on the way to the Point of Ayre.

If 100 miles sounds like a stretch too far, then don’t worry there are shorter routes that will still challenge any rider. As the name may indicate, the Half Circle is around half the distance of the full route. At 51 miles, it covers much of the southern part of the island and the tricky climbs that come with it. Once at Peel, riders taking this course will turn east and head towards Douglas before returning south to Castletown.

The Quarter Circle powered by Dot Performance is a more bite-sized challenge that is suitable for new riders, families, and those looking for something a little more leisurely. It’s 17 miles long and takes riders west to Port Erin, before looping around and finishing in Castletown Square where it began.

Your entry fee will include a whole host of added support, including a fully signposted route, feed zones, motorcycle assistance, help to get you back to Castletown if you’re unable to finish, and a massage at the finish. There’s also an event t-shirt, a finisher’s medal, electronic timing, and entry into the charity raffle.

With just under three months until the event, there’s still time to make the most of the improving weather and get riding. You can do it in your own way, from using the gym’s bike equipment, utilising a home trainer, or getting out on the road.

Just as there is no one way to prepare for the Zurich Lighthouses Challenge, there is no one way to do it. You can do it in Lycra on a high-end bike, but you don’t have to. Feel free to turn up on your 20-year-old bike in clothes that you find comfortable riding in. Want to do it on a tandem? Go for it. Would you love to test out your new e-bike? We’d love to have you.

Do you want to ride it with a team of friends rather than on your own? You can sign up to the Full Circle as a team of four and do it as a relay. They say that a problem shared is a problem halved, well this time it’s quartered. The event is not about beating anyone or setting a fastest

time, it is about setting your own challenge and your own goal and achieving it in the way that suits you.

We just want to get more people on bikes, no matter how they do it. Riding can help you gain muscle and improve your fitness, but it is about more than that. Studies show that riding a bike can be good for your mental health, ease stress and anxiety, and help your self-esteem.

Olympic silver medallist Lizzie Deignan has spoken about the way riding her bike has helped her. “I needed it for my mental health,” she said of cycling in a recent interview for the CyclingTips website.

This year, the Zurich Lighthouses Challenge has partnered with Manx mental health charity Isle Listen. Money raised by the event will be donated to Isle Listen to help them in their mission to remove the stigma surrounding mental

The Great Outdoors: Where the Isle of Man excels

We all know how fabulous the Isle of Man is for everything outdoors-y: the adverts aimed at visitors tell us so. If you walk, there’s the coastal paths and the end-to-end trail. If you cycle, there are miles and miles of empty(ish) roads. If it’s history you’re after, there are the heritage sites. And now, just in time for summer 2023 there are two new books to get you outside – ‘The Magic of the Manx Glens’ and ‘Manx Hills’. Both do exactly as they say on the covers – Susan Jellis’s book celebrates, in glorious colour, the national glens, and Tom Sinden has taken the inspiration of the Wainwright guides to the Lake District’s fells to produce a pictorial guide to walking the Island’s hills, with pencil drawings and route diagrams of suggested routes.

Let’s look at Tom’s guide first. His introduction to the Manx hills was a boy scout and he still walks them regularly. As well as his own drawings in ‘Manx Hills’ he includes notes on the geology, history and even some local folklore and he doesn’t think we make enough fuss about the glorious scenery which opens up when you get out into the hills. “We all know about the Snaefell summit, from where on a good day you can see seven kingdoms,” Tom comments, “but I think there’s more to made of lesser, but no less beautiful summits of the other hills. The colours which change with the seasons, the unexpected peeks of the coastlines and the opportunities to stumble on Neolithic burial sites such as Cashtal Yn Ard. It’s all free to explore: all you need is a pair of walking boots, a bottle of water and a picnic to enjoy them all. And a good OS map and, of course, my book!”

‘The Magic of the Manx Glens’ is, perhaps surprisingly, the only comprehensive guide to the Island’s glens, how they were formed, and how they were developed as ‘hot spots’ for visitors and locals alike. Author Susan Jellis describes it as a celebration in words, original artworks and photographs, and which also takes its cue from museum images from Manx National Heritage. “In fact,” Susan says, “this project is an excellent example of how well the Island’s community can work together across government departments, local organisations and businesses and of course, the local creatives who allowed me to use their images free of charge.”

With colour plates from painters Ronnie Doyle, Michael Starkey, Tracey Dean (whose images of waterfalls also grace the latest stamps from IOM Post), photographers Rachel Price and Peter Killey and more, the Manx Glens really come to life. And ‘The Magic of the Manx Glens’ also has something sadly lacking in many local guide books: accessibility icons and information. “This was provided by Beth Martin of Disability Networks IOM,” says Susan, “and I’m

delighted to say that any profits raised from sales of the book will be donated to this small, but vital local charity, to help continue its work as the central point for Manx disability information.”

Of course I had to ask both Tom and Susan which were their favourite summits and glens but not surprisingly both found it difficult to choose. “It would be easier to say which are my least favourite,” laughed Tom, “but as you’ve put me on the spot I’ll go for North Barrule, Cronk Ny Arrey Laa, and Slieau Whallian as my top three.” Susan was equally as reticent to be pinned down. “Favourite glen, that's a tricky one. I've always loved Dhoon glen and Tholty-Will, but now I'm getting older Ballaglass is coming up on the outside, along with glens that offer a stroll and a cup of tea.”

Davina McCall recently dazzled on the ‘Masked Singer’ in a bright red halter neck top. Jonathan Ross to her side, and only seven years older, paled into insignificance next to her. She looked amazing and he looked ……………..less amazing!

I reviewed the Oscars recently; not so much as a film critic but

for who soared and who bombed colour wise. Cate Blanchett in a sea blue looked amazing as it really accentuated her eyes (although if I’m going to be picky I would have teamed it with gold and not silver earrings). Kerry Condon looked

stunning in a strapless yellow and this was my firm favourite, mainly because yellow is a very difficult colour to wear and she absolutely nailed it! Why not be the one to stand out in a sea of black evening dresses? Her golden hair and the lush red lipstick both worked together to complete the ensemble.

Elizabeth Banks on the other hand had a serious wardrobe malfunction. Ideally only ‘Winter’ ladies can look fabulous in her chosen strong contrast of black and white. I would have chosen a red, a turquoise, a gold or an amber to make her really stand out in the Oscar crowd.

A little knowledge goes a long way in terms of colour and knowing if you are warm tone, cool tone, bright or muted, dark or light can be truly transformative; whether you are on the red carpet or in your front room. Being colour perfect does not have to come with a large price tag. Wearing a plain t-shirt with simple leggings can have you looking amazing as long as you don’t muddle up your apple green with your sea green, your pillar box red with your scarlet.

KPMG in the Crown Dependencies announces new Director promotion for Leonard Gerber

KPMG in the Crown Dependencies is delighted to announce Leonard Gerber has been promoted to Advisory Director focusing on insolvency and restructuring, based in their Isle of Man office. This promotion recognises the continuing development and growth of the firm within the Crown Dependencies, following a number of recent promotions in the firm’s Advisory department.

Leonard is an experienced Insolvency Practitioner – taking corporate appointments in Jersey, Guernsey, and the Isle of Man. He is also one of only a few Insolvency Practitioners in the Isle of Man to be authorised to act as Official Trustee in Bankruptcy.

Before moving to the Isle of Man, Leonard spent time in the armed forces in South Africa where he was commissioned as an officer. After relocating to the Isle of Man in 2002, he joined the financial services sector where he worked on projects such as integrating the “offshore” banking elements of Barclays and ABSA in the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey.

Boston Multi Family Office announces four key appointments

Boston Multi Family Office is pleased to announce the appointment of several key positions as it reshapes its senior management team to pursue and deliver its ambitious growth plans for the future.

Nick Gilbert joins as Chief Financial Officer and will lead all financial operations in both Boston’s Isle of Man and Malta offices, helping to maintain strong governance and control while also supporting the Group growth strategy. A Chartered Accountant and a fellow at the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, Nick has over 20 years’ experience working across many different industries.

Stephen Wilson becomes Chief Operating Officer and will join the Group Board and the Board of Boston Limited. Stephen has been promoted from Head of Group Finance in recognition of his contribution to the Group since he joined Boston three years ago, including overseeing the transformation of the finance team.

Stephen takes over the Chief Operating Officer position from Alex McNee, who along with Chief Executive Officer Katherine Ellis, led the management buyout of Boston in 2019. Alex will now assume the newly created role of Group Director, Mergers & Acquisitions. Having already managed the successful acquisition of IQE in 2020, Alex will focus his time on the sourcing, execution and integration of key strategic acquisitions for the business as it continues to forge ahead with its development plans and react to changing market conditions.

Boston is also announcing the appointment of a new chairman, Richard Grainger. Richard has spent 30 years in corporate finance since qualifying as an accountant with PwC. He was formerly Chief Executive Officer of Close Brothers Corporate Finance and has chaired more than 10 businesses, ranging from public companies to private equity backed and family owned businesses. These include IPES Guernsey (Holdings) Limited and Jersey-based Liberation Group.

Planning to succeed Danielle Brown

Head of Project Management Office - Manx Telecom

What do you do day-to-day?

The PMO team facilitates all major projects across the company and these projects generally span multiple teams and require close coordination from start to finish. My role is to provide oversight of all projects within my team and manage the funnel of new projects. We have a continuous inflow of requests, and I work closely with our department leaders to strategically evaluate and prioritise new project requests to be added to our Prioritised Project Portfolio.

On average we could have anywhere between 20-30 active projects on our PPP. The breadth of what we cover can include anything from software development, data centre or infrastructure migrations, to ESG Projects (and everything in between!).

A major project I am currently managing is the roll-out of fibre broadband. This is one of the most important telecoms projects to ever take place on the Isle of Man, and one of the most significant investments by Manx Telecom. We’re investing £40million in a world class fibre broadband network across the Island and we are delivering the Isle of Man Government’s National Broadband Plan.

My role is to coordinate the various workstreams that feed into the delivery of fibre across the Island, which means setting out timelines and ensuring milestones are met, and getting involved in everything from working with the planning and installation teams, and with the products, marketing,

communications and sales teams. I make sure that everyone is working collaboratively and has visibility of the many and various workstreams.

Why do you think it’s important for women to be properly represented in your industry? Nobody should have an advantage or disadvantage based on their gender: it is all about hard work and dedication. However, it is important that we play our part in improving gender equality in the workplace.

Historically, technology industries have been predominantly male-dominated. We are seeing the gap gradually reducing and, hopefully, as more young women see strong successful women in tech industries, they might be more inclined to explore a career in this sector. In addition, having diversity in the workplace helps us to better meet the needs of our diverse customer base.

What I love most

I love the people I work with, and the diversity of the projects we work on. We have a really great bunch of people at Manx Telecom who genuinely care about each other and about our customers.

As a company, we always work with our customers front of mind. A big part of my job is to make sure we get input from and collaborate with all the relevant departments to ensure changing customer needs are met.

Biggest challenge?

I would say our biggest challenge is that we want to do so much. There are so many exciting projects and initiatives that we want to get involved in, and we only have a finite amount of resource to deliver them. Prioritising them is a critical part of the process.

Hobbies outside work

I have a four-year-old son who is the light of my life and we love going out as a family on the weekends, exploring, going to cafes and just spending time with each other. We love paddleboarding and exploring the Island from its shores. In summertime, if the sun is out, we are most likely out on the water.

I also love Pilates and would love to be able to share the joy I find in it so I am currently studying to teach Pilates in my spare time.

Career highlight

The highlight of my career so far has been leading my team of excellent project managers, successfully delivering projects and seeing our hard work come to fruition. With visibility across almost every area of the business, I have learnt so much and I am continuously learning.

Compliance Matters

Tell us about your career journey so far!

Compliance was not what I had in mind when I started out in financial services. To be honest, I didn’t really know what I wanted to do, but I did know that I enjoyed helping people solve problems. For the first few years of my career I fulfilled a variety of administration roles, using them to better understand the businesses I worked for, the products they sold and why customers would buy them. A move in to complaint handling and then risk management helped me realise that playing to my strengths not only made work more enjoyable but also more productive. It was around this time that I also studied for and attained my degree in Law; something that I never thought would be possible when I was at school. From this, I became more involved in commercial litigation matters, before finally making a move in to Compliance.

Women in business have a tendency to under-sell themselves and I was no different. While I am a firm believer in allowing your work to speak for itself, with output and results getting you noticed, there is no denying that having the confidence to self-promote is also helpful. Having recently completed the ICAEW Women In Leadership course, it is amazing how many women find self-promotion difficult. Understanding, valuing and playing to unique strengths and skills builds confidence.

What would an average working day look like?

I’m not sure there is such a thing as an average working day! It’s a real mixture of supporting the team with their work and personal development, dealing with queries from across the business and supporting the strategic initiatives of the Group. Every day is different, providing me with the opportunity to help others and to continue learning as we support the growth of the business.

What do you look for in the culture of the firm you're working for?

Compliance can be tricky in a business where the culture is not aligned. A poor culture can cause friction, a lack of sharing of information and escalation of issues, poor decision making and potentially regulatory intervention. Compliance is an integral part of any business, supporting and guiding operational areas, providing assurance to the Board and maintaining cordial relationships with regulators. It is imperative that the tone from the top of any business supports a strong compliance culture; one where conversations are open and honest with fair, informed and timely decision making.

Best bit of your job?

There are two things. It’s a bit of a cliché, but the first is the people. I’m surrounded by people at all levels who work hard and are experts in their field, but who also

care about each other and take time out to support one another, both professionally and socially. The second thing is the company’s ambition. It can be challenging, but the opportunities for personal growth and development are supported and tangible.

What do you get up to outside the office?

I love to spend as much time as possible outdoors, usually riding horses, although I have been known to go walking and cycling too. Riding and looking after horses is my way of unwinding and keeping reasonably fit. There are also great life lessons to be learnt from them that easily translate in to the business world. Firstly, they help you to develop a high level of emotional intelligence which can

really help with ‘reading a room’ or gauging the mood of individuals when navigating a potentially difficult conversation. Secondly, horses have kept me grounded and very much a realist; one minute you’re achieving your goals and the next, you’re falling off!

I love to spend as much time as possible outdoors, usually riding horses, although I have been known to go walking and cycling too.

Tell us about your career journey so far!

I have worked in technology since my very first role as an information analyst at Barnet Health Authority in 1999. Moving back to the Island in 2007, I worked as a Senior Business Analyst for Zurich before spending 11 years working for PDMS where I was appointed to the Board of Directors in 2018 and held the position of Chief Operating Officer. In March of this year, I became Chief Executive Officer of Elite Group IT, a Telecommunications and IT service provider that specialises in connectivity, networking, voice, cloud, managed IT and security solutions. It is an exciting time to have joined the company as we have significant expansion plans, both locally and internationally.

What attracted you to a career in tech?

Always curious about how things work and how systems are designed I had a keen interest in problem-solving and user motivations. A career in technology offered me the opportunity to develop these skills by understanding user requirements and translating this into actionable insights, whilst also delving into the detail of issues. I have also enjoyed the variety a career in this industry has offered me. Technology is certainly not an industry that stands still and has continued to keep me on my toes.

What do you look for in the culture of the firm you’re working for?

Personally, I value a culture of transparency and inclusivity. When people collaborate openly there is a great opportunity for change and progress to be made. Clear communication channels, both internally and externally, are vital and at Elite Group IT, this is certainly something that we champion. Being as open and transparent as possible with the information shared across the company can have incredible benefits. Whilst priorities can be different between departments, shared goals help to unite individuals across the business.

Do you think there is a benefit to being a female in your industry?

Absolutely! It is no secret that the level of female representation in the tech industry is low in comparison to other industries. However, studies have found that female leaders statistically perform better than male leaders. Females have been shown to demonstrate strong commercial acumen, innovation and foster strong working relationships. Great strides have been made to bridge the gender gap in technology, but I think more can be done to raise awareness of the opportunities out there for females in tech. Empowering females is vital and initiatives such as Love Tech on the Isle of Man play a crucial role in educating our future female tech leaders. At Elite Group IT we have a fantastic group of women making a significant impact working in departments across Sales, Marketing, Accounts, HR and Technical Support. They are proof of the scope of opportunities for females within the technology industry.

What advice would you give a woman considering a career in technology?

I think the best advice I could give is to be authentic. Often it can feel so easy to change who we are to accommodate certain situations, but the power of authenticity should never be underestimated. Early in my career, I felt that I needed to alter how I approached matters to meet a certain perception of what was expected. However, as I have progressed, I have learned that it is more important to remain true to who you are. It is okay to show vulnerability and, now in a leadership position, I see that this contributes to being a real and approachable leader.

Tell us about your career journey so far! It's emotional to reflect on my journey. Everything I’ve achieved today was once just distant dreams of a little girl.

When I was six years old, I visited my first art gallery and knew right away that I wanted to become an artist to create beautiful photos.

My mother always encouraged me, telling me I could achieve anything with hard work. Her unconditional love and belief in me motivated me to dream big and explore my talents.

Tragically, my mother passed away from cancer when I was only 13. Afterwards, my father wished me to pursue a more traditional career path, like law, medicine, or accounting. So I studied economics and aimed to become an accountant. However, deep down, I still questioned whether this was the life I truly

I left my well-paying job, sold my house, and pursued my dream of becoming a photographer. I worked in restaurants on weekends and volunteered to take photos for friends and companies.

All I had at that time was my camera, my dreams, and many unknowns…

What are the most significant milestones in your career so far?

As I look back on my 15-year journey in the world of photography, I can't help but feel a sense of immense pride and gratitude for the milestones I have achieved along the way.

International recognition: My photographs have been featured in numerous magazines and blogs across the globe, garnering attention, and praise from the photography community.

Making a positive impact: My passion for creativity doesn't stop at photography; I also love teaching photographers. Sharing what

Natalie said: “For many customers Andrea will be a familiar face as she was previously Branch Manager at Prospect Hill. Natalie is developing a programme of events for the Isle of Man, opening Work Café facilities to community groups, small businesses, and entrepreneurs.

UCM Launches New Sustainability Course

University College Isle of Man (UCM) has launched a new course for adults for Sustainability and the Green Environment.

The Level 2 City and Guilds Award aims to develop an understanding of what is meant by Sustainability, consider how a business has an impact upon the environment and to explore the steps that could be taken to develop more sustainable working practices.

The course has been designed to be applicable across all sectors and is especially useful for businesses and individuals who want to work within sustainability or who have a responsibility for sustainability within the organisation they work in.

The qualification helps to develop knowledge and understanding of terms

such as ‘environment’, ‘sustainability’, ‘climate change’ and ‘net zero’ as they relate to a green future.

Qualifications around sustainability are important as businesses develop their sustainability goals and practices, and create new roles in support of the Climate Act.

Kerry Birchall, who oversees Adult Learning at UCM, commented: “Sustainability is such an important topic, and at UCM we already integrate sustainability into the curriculum for our full-time courses and apprenticeships, so we’re delighted to be able to offer a new course for adult learners who want to improve their sustainability knowledge and credentials.

“This is a great course for anyone who wants to develop in this field, or for businesses who want staff to become more sustainability-aware.”

The course runs for 5 weeks, for 3 hours a week, with the first intake starting on 18th May.

In preparation for Expedition Limitless, Martin Hall, Director at Atla Group arranged a quiz night at 1886 which raised over £3.5K this contributed to the amazing £60.5K total raised so far for Isle Listen!

Below Martin talks about the Expedition:

“The expedition to the Arctic can only be described in one word. Incredible. From the expedition concept of building resilience, created by our leader Phil Quirk, to the scenery of the Arctic, to the funds raised for Isle Listen.

The 7-day snowshoe trek, for up to 9 hours a day, pushed our bodies and our minds, pushing our resilience levels. Weather conditions varied from bright sunshine to white out, blizzard conditions and -25C in the space of 30 minutes. Simple tasks like fuelling and hydration became onerous tasks every 20 minutes, but were fundamental to keeping our wellbeing.

The Expedition Limitless Team had an ultimate goal to complete the expedition, no matter what it took. Every team member took a role and ensured we struck together, we looked after each other and provided the support to others when needed. Team members carried injuries throughout the trek and blisters that would not look out of place in the Parish Walk.

The highlight, aside from completing the trek as a full team, which is less common feat than one might think, was the moment we reach the altitude peak of the trek and in near whiteout conditions, and having less than one minute due to the cold weather, to get a team photograph that will be imprinted in my memory forever.

A journey I will never forget, resilience tested and pushed and most importantly a large donation to Isle Listen. Thank you to all those who donated, I felt proud to have been part of this challenge, and to have succeeded in our ultimate goal, to raise funds and awareness, and support local charity, Isle Listen.”

Limitless 2023

In the March/April edition, the Expedition Limitless Team was featured as they prepared for their once in a lifetime Arctic Expedition in aid of Isle Listen. The Expedition team set out with two goals in mind, to raise awareness of mental health and prove the innate resilience that resides in all of us when faced with adversity but also to raise £50,000 to support Isle Listen and the important work they do in our schools and community.

As we set off on our long journey to the Arctic, there were signs of the spring bloom on the Isle of Man but in the Arctic, we would face temperatures as low as -25 degrees.

As we stepped off the overnight train in Abisko, 200km inside the Arctic circle, we were tired but we had time in the Abisko mountain station to rest. We also had time to check our kit and our two pulks (small sledges), which contained emergency shelters and half the food that would sustain us for 7 days as we trekked 110km, unsupported, along the Kungsladen route in Arctic Sweden.

After months of meticulous planning and preparation the day had finally come. As we ate our last breakfast in civilisation, there was an air of excitement but also nervousness in anticipation of what was to come. It was -12 degrees Celsius as we set off on day 1 from Abisko to Abiskojaure covering 15km. The sun was shining and it was a good reintroduction to walking in snowshoes. As we wandered through the valley in the birch forests, the scenery was beautiful. We finished day one in good

spirits as we reached the first of our Arctic huts. The Arctic huts along the Kungsleden route are managed by the STF (Svenska Turistforeningen) for the safety and benefit of all explorers. They are basic with no electricity, but they have wooden bunk beds, a log burner to keep us warm and gas bottles to boil water. The first job at each hut is to chop firewood and collect drinking water from under the ice.

At the end of day 1 some of the team had blisters forming, which can become a big problem if not managed. If a team member is unable to carry on due to blisters or an injury, they have to be airlifted or rescued by a long-distance skidoo. This is something we all wanted to avoid.

Day 2, the longest day, covered 21km from Abiskojaure to Alesjaure. The temperature had dropped to -25 overnight and it was bitterly cold as we started to climb into the mountains. As we reached the plateau after 300m of ascent, the views were breathtaking. 21km had, however, taken its toll with more blisters and injuries starting to appear that required attention. Part of our daily routine was to assess the weather

each night using our satellite phone. Unfortunately, we had some bad weather coming in which meant an early start on day 3 to try and stay ahead of it.

Day 3 from Alesjaure to Tjakta was extremely challenging. We battled through the 12km facing strong cross winds, driving snow and poor visibility. When we made it to Tjakta, we were told that we may not be able to proceed on day 4 and would have to stay 2 nights to let the weather clear. This meant we would have to do two legs and 24km on day 5 to catch up. The blister and injury situation had worsened but thankfully we had a doctor, physio and sports masseur on the team to help manage these issues.

When we woke on day 4, the weather had improved with the wind and snow now in our backs. Following a risk assessment, we decided to go the 12km to our next stop at Salka, taking us over the highest point of the route. It was another gruelling day with, wind, snow and technical descents. Our hut was a very welcome sight that night. After the chores were done and everyone had eaten, the focus was now on treating the blisters and injuries.

When we woke on Day 5, the sun was shining once again for our 12km trek to Singi. The views all day were astonishing and that night, with clear skies, the Northern Lights gave us the most wonderful display. It’s difficult to put into words how incredibly beautiful the Arctic is and day 5 blessed us with unforgettable memories.

Day 6 was very cold as we left Singi for our 14km trek to the Kebnekaise Mountain Station. We were looking forward to reaching Kebnekaise as it has a shop and somewhere to eat cooked food, a nice change from dried food. As we trekked under beautiful mountains and glaciers all day, the team was in high spirits, but worsening injuries were a concern. Two team members struggled to finish in Kebnekaise, so a decision had to be made that night if they could continue. Thankfully after extensive treatment both bravely decided to carry on.

Day 7 had finally arrived. An early ‘alpine start’ was required to cover the final 19km and catch our bus from Nikkaluokta to Kiruna where we would stay over-night before our long train journey back to Stockholm. It was -20

as we left Kebnekaise in the dark. We were excited but a little sad that our adventure was almost over. Our injured members were cooping well, so we were all able to enjoy the beautiful scenery. We even saw Moose and Reindeer in the valley.

During that final km to the finish, there was an intense feeling of accomplishment and even more special that everyone finished together. Through team work we had proven how resilient we all are and that adversity brings out the best in us. We had tears, laughter, pain and every emotion you could think of, but we did it, we conquered the mighty Kungsleden.

At the time of writing, we have raised a staggering £61k for Isle Listen with donations still coming in.

Douglas Rugby Club celebrate a 150th year after their founding by Arthur William Moore in 1873.

As probably the longest established continuous sporting entity on the Isle of Man, generations since have established grounds, clubhouse and a world-wide membership of players and supporters. The Drinkwater family, Reg Chafer, Bill Pickering, the Reverend Fred Cubbon, Commander Brian Vaughan and George Fathers were amongst mainstays of the club through the decades, and Alf Penketh and Arthur Paul were Douglas players selected for the first British Lions tour to Australia and New Zealand in 1888. Amongst the celebratory events is the black-tie dinner for 250 guests at Port-e-Chee in July, including thirty-two Douglas captains and auctioning of the last copy of DRUFC 1873-2023, a limitededition hardback history of the club.

MANX BOXER PRAISES THE AGONY AND ECSTASY OF A FIGHT

Fighting in Steve Wood’s VIP Promotions at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens in May undefeated Manx boxer Mathew Rennie faces his eleventh match since joining the professional ranks in 2018.

‘It’s a ‘small hall’ show’ explains Rennie, ‘and these are the bedrock underpinning professional boxing offering younger relatively unknown fighters the opportunity to build a solid record of achievement. Fans appreciate proximity to the action, close enough to smell the boxers’ courage one friend said. But it’s expensive to stage given venue and ring hire plus referee and security charges. The onus is solely on home boxers to sell tickets. This is a challenge faced constantly by approximately 1100 professional boxers ‘carded’ with the Boxing Board of Control. I believe I’m the only active professional boxer from the island and as many travel regularly to England to support me I’m doubly grateful for their commitment.

Growing up in Douglas Rennie began boxing at eight with Manx ABC. The former Ballakermeen High School student explains ‘Boxing suited me immediately. I’ve always been a highly motivated headstrong individual loving sport and up for challenges. I’m hard working but well-grounded as my approach to life is remembering that when times are good something less good may lie in store and when times are bad something good is waiting.

Moving to Liverpool at eighteen was ‘tough’

to any other boxer of course I would like to be a world champion but I’ll let the boxing journey select its own ultimate destination. Winning a fight doesn’t make you the better person but it does show that the winner is the tougher fighter physically and mentally. I’m confident that buoyed by so much support from Man I’ll be able to climb those ranks. Hopefully to the top but it’s one fight at a time and it’s a tough game in that a boxer is only as good as his most recent fight. That’s why in training I concentrate exclusively on my camp making sure I’m doing everything I can to be 100%by eating correctly, sleeping enough, recovering well and constantly training hard. The nerves will kick in on the night when I’m getting my hands wrapped so I focus on breathing to stay relaxed’.

Rennie is unapologetic about inherent dangers in the sport including head trauma. ‘Boxing has never been safer but boxers do still put their lives on the line. It takes courage. Fighters have annual brain scans. It’s up to the referee and the boxer’s corner to determine when a fight needs to stop but repeated powerful punching to the face and head is part of it and I hope it always will be. Each boxer has learnt to defend himself. It’s boxing not brawling and I enjoy demonstrating skills learnt. But spectators also enjoy watching boxers getting close to each other and brutally exchanging blows. I love that too. Boxers do get hurt and taking punishment is an occupational hazard. I won’t deny savouring the pure elation any boxer feels on delivering a devastating body or head shot that floors my opponent. That’s the ecstasy making any agony worthwhile’.

That boxing teaches respect and self-discipline and forms firm friendships is a view to which Rennie subscribes, admiring fighters old and modern like Duran and Lomachenko not just for boxing talent but also for struggles and challenges overcome. ‘Boxing often appeals to those with less’ according to Rennie, ‘and can be a life saver to young kids teaching life skills and boosting confidence to shun negative or criminal activities. Many kids admire boxers from similar backgrounds to theirs and attending a boxing gym can change a life

So, what’s in store for Rennie’s next opponent?

‘I intend to remain undefeated and promise those shouting for me an exhilarating explosive performance. I fight to win and will do whatever that takes. It’s also about showing boxers higher up the rankings just what they will undergo when fighting me. Each opponent needs to prepare for a beautifully brutal beating with many rounds of painful punishing pummelling by persistently powerful punches precisely positioned. I’ll break his spirit and end it when I choose to by knockout with him taking the hardest punch he’s ever had. That’s my plan. We

REVIVAL OF THE SHORT TRACK RACING UP JURBY

When it comes to Motorsport on the Isle of Man, we’re spoilt for choice on an array of different disciplines to get involved with. It’s no surprise that, on an Island that has a rich motorcycling heritage, that’s there’s an abundance of events and clubs on Island.

If you’re involved in motorbike racing on the Island, it’s hard to escape Jurby. There are a number of clubs hosting events both on & off road.

Near to the Jurby airfield that hosts a manx short circuit (tarmac) championship, there’s the kart track which was rebuilt and designed with karting in mind. That said two wheeled racing also takes place on the circuit across three different classes. Plops (Honda C90’s) Supermoto’s and Pit Bikes.

The club, like all clubs, struggles from time to time with entries but last year they managed put on a full championship with

For a track designed for kart racing, it’s a small technical track, the current kart lap record is a 45.09 second lap which is a seriously impressive time. Back on two wheels though the fastest lap is in the Supermoto class with David Pearce with a 49.02 second lap.

This year the championships continue, promising another competitive season across all classes.

Top 10 changes THE TT HAS SEEN OVER THE YEARS

The Isle of Man TT is one of the most prestigious and iconic motorcycle events in the world. Held annually, the races have been running since 1907 and have seen numerous changes over the years.

One thing that remains constant is the thrill and excitement of the event. However, it is still so important that the races continue to evolve so they are not left in the dust.

Here are the top 10 changes the TT has seen over the years:

1. The need for speed

When the Isle of Man TT began, riders raced around the winding country roads and picturesque villages at a maximum speed of around 40mph, due to the capabilities of the bikes. Now, speeds approach 200mph. Records are regularly broken, and the current average speed lap record for the RL360 Superstock stands at 134.403mph, set by Peter Hickman in 2018.

4. Changes in race format

When the races first began, riders only competed over a single lap. As bikes have become faster and the races more competitive, the races have run over multiple laps.

This isn’t the only major change to the format of the races. Different classes of motorcycle have also been introduced meaning that the race is fairer and, again, more competitive. Classes at the IOM TT include Superbike, Supersport and Sidecar, as well as the Superstock race sponsored by RL360

3. Improved safety measures

Safety is a top priority for organisers. Various new regulations have been put in place to reduce the risk of accidents. This includes improved track design, installation of air fences, improved run off areas and better medical facilities. It’s also important that the riders wear better protective gear and do everything in their power to make the ride as safe as possible. The first notable safety measure came in 1914, when helmets were made compulsory.

2. Advances in motorcycle technology

Bikes have become faster, lighter, more powerful machines in the past 116 years. There have been many advances such as electronic fuel injection, quick shifters and traction control. All aspects have contributed to a better race. A change to regulations for TT 2023 is that ‘slick tyres’ will be permitted in the solo classes, as technological developments mean this is now the more popular choice.

5. Increase in media coverage

As modern technology has advanced, the Isle of Man TT has advanced with it. Increased coverage across TV, radio and online outlets have meant the races can be followed from every corner of the world. Not only this, but the use of drones, helmet-cams and high-speed cameras for TV coverage has been commonplace for many years, giving viewers a different perspective and front row seat to the races.

6. Professionalisation of the sport

Growth in popularity has meant that the races have become more professional over the years. With strong branding and sponsorship deals such as the RL360 Superstock, the contest now also has prize money, which has further raised the profile of the event. The Isle of Man Government closely regulates the event, with strict rules governing rider behaviour and conduct. Riders are expected to adhere to a high standard of sportsmanship and respect for fellow competitors, and follow strict safety measures. Any violations of these standards can result in penalties or disqualification. While the event remains a thrilling and challenging test of skill and endurance, there is a greater emphasis on safety, ensuring the races can continue for generations to come.

10. Greater focus on sustainability

Due to the global growing concerns about climate change, the Isle of Man TT has put a focus on being environmentally sympathetic and reducing their carbon footprint. Introducing initiatives such as carbon offsetting, switching out single use products and promoting eco-friendly transport options for fans are popular ways to reduce the environmental impact of the event.

8. Increased international participation

International participation dates back to 1911, when a team of French riders first competed in the event. Over the years, more and more foreign riders have participated in the event, coming from all over the world such as Australia, Japan, and the United States. In 1937, Italian Omobono Tenni became the first foreign rider to win a TT, when he won the Lightweight. In 1961, Mike Hailwood won three victories in a week, one of which was on a Honda, the first win for a Japanese manufacturer.

7. Changes to the course

Over the past 116 years, many improvements have been made to the route. This has made the course faster and safer, which has also added to the challenge of the event. One of the biggest improvements occurred in 1920, when changes were made to the Mountain Course and competitors turned left at Cronk-ny-Mona and followed the primary A18 Mountain Road to Governor's Bridge with a new start/finish line on Glencrutchery Road, which lengthened the course to 37.75 mi (60.75 km).

9. More women riders

Traditionally a male dominated sport; in recent years, there has been a break down in gender barriers and efforts to make the sport more inclusive. Beryl Swain in 1962 was the first woman to compete in a solo race, finishing in a respectable 22nd place. It wouldn’t be until 1978 that another female racer would compete, Hilary Musson. Hilary competed consecutively for 7 years. There have been other women riders in recent years too, such as Maria Costello and Jenny Tinmouth, and there have been female sidecar competitors too.

There are calories in almost everything you eat but the burning question is, how many calories do you need? In my experience, that’s the one thing people need the most help with and when they fully understand it their relationship with food starts to bloom.

If you have read my previous Gallery articles on the 3 Macros - Protein, Carbohydrates (Carbs) & Fat, you will know that Protein and Carbs each have 4 calories per gram and Fat has 9 calories per gram. Therefore, if you know how many grams of each of the 3 macros you are eating every day, you can easily work out how many calories (kcal) you are consuming. This is the first step in understanding how many calories you need. For example – 400g of carbs (1,600 kcal) + 150g of protein (600 kcal) + 80g of fat (720 kcal) = 2,920 kcal

You now know how to calculate the calories in food but how does your body actually use those calories? This is what’s referred to as your Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE), which has 3 component parts:

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR): Your BMR is the calories you burn each day to keep your brain and all your bodily functions running optimally. Think of your BMR as the calories you need to ‘keep the lights on’. Your BMI represents approx. 60% of your TDEE.

Physical Exercise and Non-Exercise Activity

Thermogenesis (NEAT):

NEAT is the number of calories you burn through daily activity and movement (walking, fidgeting etc) that is not regarded as planned physical exercise. The combination of NEAT and planned physical exercise (running, cycling, weightlifting etc) represents approx. 30% of your TDEE.

Thermic Effect of Food (TEF):

Approx. 10% of the total calories you eat are used to digest the actual food itself. However, the 10% is an average. Fat TEF is approx. 3%, so requiring

very little energy to digest. Carb TEF is between 5% & 10%, requiring a little more energy to digest. Protein TEF is the 20-30% requiring most energy to digest.

What is a calorie? A calorie is a unit of energy equivalent to the heat energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water by 1 °C.

To now understand how we gain or lose bodyfat, I’ll use a simple analogy. Think of a full bucket of water under a running tap with a hole in the bottom where the water in the bucket is your stored bodyfat and the water entering and leaving the bucket is calories. If the amount of water going into the bucket is the same as the amount going out the hole in the bottom, the water level will not change. This represents your Maintenance Calories, which is the daily calories you need to maintain your current bodyweight. If you turn the tap off just a little, the water level in the bucket will slowly drop. This represents fat loss where your body has to use some of your stored bodyfat to maintain your TDEE.

Conversely, if you turn the tap on a little more, then the bucket will start to overflow. This represents fat gain where your body has more calories than it needs and stores the excess energy from those extra calories as bodyfat.

Now we get to the burning question. How do you calculate your Maintenance Calories? Thankfully there are lots of free calculators online but I will give you a simple and effective way to do it using the Harris Bennedict method and your phone calculator:

STEP 1: DETERMINE YOUR BMR AS EXPLAINED ABOVE:

MEN: BMR = 66.5 + (13.75 x weight in kilos) + (5 x height in cm) – (6.75 x age in years)

WOMEN: BMR = 655.1 + (9.563 X weight in kilos) + (1.85 X height in cm) – (4.676 x age in years)

To determine the calories you need on top of your BMR, you need to multiply it by your activity factor:

STEP 2: TAKE THE BMR NUMBER AND MULTIPLY IT BY THE APPROPRIATE ACTIVITY FACTOR BELOW:

SEDENTARY: little or no exercise (BMR x 1.2)

LIGHT ACTIVITY: light exercise/sports 1-3 days/week (BMR x 1.375)

MODERATELY ACTIVE: moderate exercise/sports 3-5 days/week (BMR x 1.55)

VERY ACTIVE: hard exercise/sports 6-7 days/week (BMR x 1.725)

EXTRA ACTIVE: very hard daily exercise/ sports & physical job (BMR x 1.9)

To show this formula in action, let’s use our fictious friend John. John is 35, weighs 85kg, is 176cm tall and has an activity factor of moderately active:

John’s maintenance calories = 66.5 + (13.75 x 85) + (5 x 176) - (6.75 x 35) = 1,879 (BMR) x 1.55 (activity factor) = 2,912

Therefore, to maintain his current bodyweight John should consume approx. 2,912 calories per day.

Please keep in mind that this is just an estimate and should be used as a guideline and not an absolute rule but it gives you a good starting point when planning your meals and calories.

If your goal is to lose some bodyfat, then you could start by calculating your maintenance calories and introducing a small deficit and see how you get on by monitoring your weigh and how your clothes fit but please speak to your GP or a health professional before making any significant changes to the amount of food you eat.

When it comes to weight loss, less is not more, so in my next article I’m going to explain how you can reduce bodyfat in a controlled and healthy way and maintain a healthy bodyweight. I will also explain how to avoid many of the dietary pitfalls people fall into such as, undereating, crash dieting and how that can actually prevent you from losing weight and be detrimental to your health.
