Around the Club 50 Year Wedding Anniversary!

We would like to recognize and congratulate Andy and Barbara Rogers on their recent 50th Anniversary!

Around the Club Hall of Fame Member - Miles Weigold Sitting across the table talking to Miles Weigold about being a Race Director for the Howard County Striders in his home state of Maryland, one can see and feel the passion that resides deep in his soul for his involvement in this organization. It is virtually impossible to be attached to something for 31 years and not be passionate about it. It is surely for this reason and MANY others, that Miles was inducted into the Howard County Recreation & Parks Sports Hall of Fame on October 15.

In 1974, the Howard County Striders running club was formed. Three years later, Miles Weigold got involved…they have not been the same since! From 1977-2007, Miles was part of this organization in virtually every capacity from volunteer to Race Director to President. There were 600 members back in 1977 and over the years the membership has grown to over 2000 strong, which is where it stands still today.

Miles has been involved in well over 400 races with the Striders and has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for local charities. He was also instrumental in starting the Junior Striders of which he had to say while keeping his emotions in check, “…seeing 400 kids running across a field is one of the most gratifying sporting events I have ever witnessed.”

Directing races in which participants run is not all that Miles has done. In 1984 Miles was the Race Director for the first ever Columbia Triathlon (participants swim, cycle and run) which now has more than 1800 participants and has raised over $500,000 for local charities.

Miles considers himself “honored and humbled” to be inducted into the Howard County Sports Hall of Fame. This is obviously a distinguished achievement as only 55 people have been inducted in the Hall of Fame since its inception in 2005.

Miles succinctly states his simple two-point formula for hosting a quality race; having an accurately measured course and have accurate times for each participant…he strongly makes the statement that for every participant in every race, “to finish is to win”.

There is no doubt that he has “won” in his life more often than not…and he is definitely not finished!!!

Congratulations Miles, well deserved!!

Golf Mountain Mania Qualifier Coming Soon!

Calling all men!!! November 18th is the 27th edition of the annual Home & Home competition with Stone Canyon. A qualifying process will be held from Friday, November 8th thru Friday, November 15th. You must play the North Course from the Blue/Green Combo tees and you only get one round to qualify. This year’s event will have a $40 event fee per person.

A total of 10 members and 2 pro’s will make up the team trying to extend our overall lead of 16 wins to 10 losses!

Golf Race for the Troon Cup We are introducing a point system to determine our three male and three female qualifiers for the Troon Cup which The Gallery is hosting December 5-7, 2014. The annual Troon Cup is a spectacular event which hosts teams from Troon-managed clubs from all around the world. Comprised of a club professional and three members, they compete in a two-day tournament with a practice round the day prior. Teams from The Gallery have competed in two events so far…the first hosted at Troon North Golf Club in Scottsdale and the second at The Ocean Edge Resort on Cape Cod, MA. We are proud to host this prestigious event and hope that many of you choose to participate in tournaments this season to qualify for one of the two teams to represent The Gallery in December 2014!!

Members will earn points in events for participation as well as performance. The “Point Events” are as follows: Men: The Outlaw (One-Day Member Guest); The Compadre (Member-Member); Club Championship; The Gunslinger (Member-Guest); Ryder Cup; Weekly Men’s Day. Ladies: La Bandolera (One-Day Member Guest); La Pareja (Member-Member); Club Championship; Member-Guest; Solheim Cup; Weekly Ladies Day. The point allocation is as follows: Club Championships: 1st: 60 2nd: 50 3rd: 40 Gross finishers per flight.

The Gunslinger; Ladies Member-Guest; both Member-Members: 1st: 50 2nd: 40 3rd: 30 per flight per player.

One-Day Member-Guests: 1st: 40 2nd: 30 3rd: 20 per flight.

Winning Team in Ryder & Solheim Cups receive 20 points.

Five points will be awarded for each participant in each non-weekly event and two points for each participant in weekly GMGA & GWGA events.

Realizing that everyone will not be able to participate in every event, we will take the aggregate of the top four point values out of the possible six events.
